TEWKESBURY ROUND TABLE INVEST IN SARA The crew at Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) Tewkesbury station were pleased to receive £2000 from Tewkesbury Round Table last month. The Tablers raised in excess of £3500 during their annual Santa Sleigh event in the town, with the Boy's Brigade also benefitting from a sizeable donation. The amount raised reflects the generosity of local people, despite the cold conditions on the run up to Christmas. The money donated to Sara will go towards funding new rescue equipment to be used in and around the local area. A group of nine Round Table members visited SARA's home at Gloucestershire Water Rescue Centre to present the funds, tour the facility and meet the crews. Paul Fearnley said “These funds are vital to us to enable us to continue to provide a comprehensive and wellequipped rescue service, on permanent stand-by to assist those most in need in our local communities. “All SARA staff are unpaid volunteers which means this money can be used to purchase tangible items, such as a boat engine, that provide immediate and longlasting benefit.” Steve Ward, Chairman of Tewkesbury Round

Thankfully a desperate plea on our

LOOKING INTO BRAD’S PIT

䡵 Look at this inspection pit and see the clogging effect of fat. We asked drain expert Brad Maber for some advice on drainage and this month Brad talks about fat. There can be numerous reasons why drains can become blocked. As a property owner some of the early warning signs you may notice are: • Your toilets, sinks, baths are not draining very well • A noticeable smell inside or outside our property • Water in external gullies both foul and storm water not draining away • Manholes surcharging (overflowing) • Sinks and baths making funny gurgling noises All of the abover could be a sign that a drain is blocked or has a defect. Another common cause of blockages is grease and fat build up in drains. The fat grease becomes a white mass and becomes quite hard. It sticks to the side of pipes and eventually causes blockage. It is important to try to prevent the build up of grease and fat that is washed down our sinks and dishwashers to prevent the build up of grease. Grease is most common in drainage runs that have very little fall causing water to hold in drainage pipes and giving time for the grease to build up.

FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION IS RESTORED IN TEWKESBURY A current major restoration project of a fairground Waltzer ride is currently ongoing in Tewkesbury. The ride, opened for the first time 75 years ago, was built in 1937 by the Streatham firm of R J Lakin, for Yorkshire showman W H Marshall. When it came out of the builders, it was known as ‘Lakin’s Masterpiece’ such was the splendour of the decoration and the stainless steel waltzer cars. Marshall’s owned it for just six years before it passed through the ownership of Parkin, Gray and Leonard from 1944, spending just 16 years on the fairgrounds before going to Wilkie’s at New Brighton in their under cover amusement park in 1955. While there, it was reduced in height by having a complete set of rounding boards removed to enable it to fit in the building and was also re-painted by Maxwell’s, another fairground ride builder. It was sold by Wilkies in 2007 and ended up in the hands of Marcus Priest at Bredon, and it was at this time that local fairground enthusiast Bill Treen got

involved, re-painting it for Marcus in the Maxwell style of 1955. In 2007 it passed on to David Littleboy from Wakefield who made the bold decision to renovate the ride to the splendour of 1937.

䡵 Before restoration Whilst Bill was repainting it at Bredon, tantalising glimpses of the original artwork could be seen under the cracked paint, but at this time, with the top boards missing, it was pointless going too far to remove the later paint. What was fascinating was the discovery of the

original pencil drawing out of the dancing scene on the massive front. David knew that Bill had the talent to uncover the original artwork, and so with not too much arm twisting, Bill started paint stripping, the first part of the restoration. The second member of David’s ‘Dream Team’, his joiner Paul Smith from Todmorden undertook the repairs and production of a complete new section of boards for the top. Talented Katie Morgan from Winchcombe was the third team member. Katie is involved with restoration projects at Sudeley Castle and has also done fairground and romany wagon decorating. Fortunately, the ride spent most of its life under cover, sparing it from the outdoor elements and contributing to its future safety. The ride will eventually go to the fairground museum at Dingles in Devon, and hopefully will come out for special occasions.

She will be tackling the ‘end to end’ bike ride from John O’Groats, to Lands End, and then on to London, in September this year. The hotel assistant, who works at Tudor House Hotel, decided to attempt the challenge to celebrate her father, Martin Wright’s positive outcome to treatment for prostate cancer, having lost her mother, Jenny, to lung cancer in 2005. Sophie said: “Understanding, first hand, how devastating cancer can be, I wanted to support Cancer Research UK to beat a disease which has so strongly affected my family. “I was looking for a physical challenge to represent the high ratio of 1 in 3 people who will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives – hence cycling a distance of 1,300 miles. “I would like to raise at least £1,300 for the charity, by cycling an average of 130 miles a day for 10 days!” Sophie is undertaking a strict training pro-

gramme, to ensure she is fit enough to take on this challenge, and can be seen cycling the local area in all weathers, as well as training at her local gym. Martin Wright, who will act as a mobile support unit for Sophie’s challenge, said “I am so very proud of Sophie for taking on such a demanding challenge in order to raise funds for Cancer Research”. Rachel Brockie, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Gloucestershire, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Sophie has decided to attempt such a great challenge to

raise money for Cancer Research UK. “She has being doing lots of preparation and we’re sure that she is going to have an amazing experience. We can’t thank her enough for all the support and want to wish her all the very best for the challenge.” Rachel added: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. Tewkesbury Foodbank is officially opened Tewkesbury’s Foodbank project which was launched at the beginning of April to help local families and individuals in need, has been officially opened in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries. The Foodbank is collaboration between local churches and the community and is the 300th one set up in the country with the support of the Trussell Trust charity. Vouchers are issued by Foodbank partners which can be exchanged for a three day supply of nutritionally balanced food to be collected from Holy Trinity Church Hall on a Saturday when the Foodbank is open. The food box shows a typical food allocation for a family with three children and contains cereal, soup, pasta/rice, beans/spaghetti, tinned vegetables, tinned meat, tinned fish, rice pudding or custard, sponge pudding, biscuits, sugar, instant mash, tea or coffee, long life fruit juice and milk. Tewkesbury’s foodbank is manned by trained volunteers who are there to listen and signpost individuals to further support services, if required. Spokesperson for Tewkesbury Foodbank,

BOOK IS PUBLISHED AFTER THIRTY YEARS A local grandmother has finally seen her dreams of becoming an author come to fruition with the publication of a new children book, Mr & Mrs Sparrow. Sue Smith, who has three children and eight grandchildren, was born in Middlesex but moved to this area in 1985. For the past seventeen years she has worked for the charity Gloucestershire Nightstop, which provides emergency accommodation for homeless young people. "I wrote Mr & Mrs Sparrow over thirty years ago, along with others, and dreamed of one day having it printed,” Sue told us. “I tried to find an illustrator that brought the characters to life, but could not find one. “Then a mutual friend, Dave, who has a printing business in Tewkesbury, put me in touch with Jessica Cull Thomas. “Jess put on paper what I had in my head; she was just on the same wavelength regarding how the characters should look. “Jess is such a talented young person and as I have worked with young people for many years, it was good that we could bridge the ages with this book.” Early sales of the publication have been very encouraging. It is available locally from Alison’s Bookshop in

Also the idea of people seeing and enjoying my work is just

overwhelming and I couldn't be happier with the reaction to the book. “I love what I do. I love creating work that can bring people happiness, especially to children with my work on books. “Obviously, with it being a child’s book, the characters needed to be appealing and approachable and with the sales of the book so far, it looks like I've achieved what I set out to do ultimately to create appealing art.” Mr & Mrs Sparrow is the first in what Sue and Jess hope will become a popular series for younger readers.

TEWKESBURY’S VINTAGE STUFF The Watson Hall in Barton Street was crammed with eager vintage fans last month when the Discover Tewkesbury retailer group organised a packed out vintage fair, writes Shelby Powell. Tewkesbury Guides worked round the clock serving cream teas and delicious homemade cakes to peckish visitors who enjoyed browsing the array of stalls selling everything vintage from clothing to accessories and jewellery to books, antiques and collectables. Other stalls were laden with home ware, vintage style crafts and delicious goodies. Members of Tewkesbury classic car club parked up their vehicles outside the Watson Hall. The town centre was really busy too - with local shopkeepers benefitting from the increased footfall.

Many shop windows were decorated in ‘vintage’ style. Bill Treen, from Treens Electrical, exhibited old fashioned electrical goods. Nick Jones, of The Photo Studio, showcased his vintage camera collection.

A vintage and antique trail was launched at the event to promote independent shops, cafes, restaurants and places of interest such as museums, as well as vintage and antique shops in Church Street and Barton Street. The leaflets will be distributed to Tourist Information Centres, hotels, B&B’s and coach companies to promote the town as a visitor attraction and touring base for The Cotswolds. Call to brighten up the town centre Tewkesbury town councillor Peggy Clatworthy wants to brighten up the town centre. Peggy is trying to arrange for local non-commercial organisations to put displays about themselves, and what they do, in some of the empty shop windows. She is keen to hear from anyone interested in taking part. Peggy said, “It is very early days, and there is quite a bit of negotiating to be done, but other towns do it, so why not Tewkesbury? Despite this year’s poor spring weather, Beckford Coppice known locally as ‘the bluebell woods’ will deliver such as spectacle well into May. You will walk past a small plantation behind an electric fence, necessary to protect the trees from the resident deer population. Follow the path down to the stream and cross the footbridge. This section of Beckford Coppice is famous for its bluebells. Follow the path up the bank and through the woods and cross over a new stile. (5). Turn right and walk along the edge of the wood, to reach a small gate. Go through and carry on ahead with the fence to your left, then bear right as the well-walked path descends through the crops. At the bottom of the field skirt the woods (6) and bear right up a lane between some hedges. The route now rejoins the Yellow Brick Road (7), so bear right and walk up the hill to return to point (4). This time, take the path on your left and walk along the edge of a field, keeping the hedge to your left. At the bottom of the field, after a descent, bear right to reach a small wooden gate. (8). Go through and up the slope, keeping the fence to your left, eventually reaching a row of trees. Keep straight ahead and over a stile, over the field and cross another stile near a high stone wall. Walk ahead to a short distance to reach the lane, turn left back into Conderton village

Summer has arrived at last! What a terrible winter we have had; it started in September and has gone on for over six months, writes Peter Badham. The issue now is that nature is playing catch up , with so much pollen being produced to capture the summer sun and ensure pollination For one in five of the population, about 10,000,000 in the UK, this means Hay fever

䡵 Peter Badham So what is Hay fever? It has little to do with Hay and even less to do with Fever! The condition was first labelled as a disease by Mr John Bostock in 1819. We all know the conditions, sneezing, running nose and itchy eyes. These are produced by the body as an allergic response to the protein in the pollen The proteins trigger a release of anti body immunoglobulin E Hay fever does run in families, it is hereditary. So how can we ease the suffering and discomfort? As with all conditions, lifestyle changes can help. Have a shower as soon as you get home at night, to get rid of the pollen. Wear wrap around sunglasses to reduce the amount of pollen

that goes into the eyes. Stay indoors as much as you can when the pollen count is high a level of 50 is considered the threshold. Community pharmacies can help. The medication we have includes antihistamines which stop the reaction and steroids that reduce the swelling and inflammation. We can supply steroid nasal sprays , these are very effective but take a while to kick in. There are many types of antihistamines on the market, tablets or liquid. Also we can supply items to ease the congestion like Otrivine. Finally, we have homeopathic products that patients do find effective. Please come and see you local pharmacist for advice and help. In 1946 he found himself imprisoned in Camp Newtown, a former Italian POW Camp, writes John Dixon. Today Camp Newtown is none other than the Canterbury Leys Public House. Several years ago, I remember the existence of concrete which had served as the base for the huts. This acted as the base for children’s swings, until health and safety became involved. In 1948 Joachim was repatriated and he trained to be a teacher of English and History. However his home was in Soviet East Germany. By 1955 he was “fed up with another dictatorship. Since my stay in England I wanted to live in a democracy” so he moved his family to West Germany. In 2012 T.H.S. published his own story in Bulletin 21 and we were, therefore, saddened to learn of Joachim’s death in January, aged 86. The enemy is now our friend.

Owners Claire Godfrey and Gill Stevens were delighted when Thomas Plant and Charlie Ross from the TV programme, Antiques Roadtrip, popped in for refreshments. EMPLOYEE RIGHTS UPON INSOLVENCY OF AN EMPLOYER When an Employer becomes insolvent Employees will have only limited financial rights against their Employer, writes David Bloxham. Employees will generally rank with other unsecured Creditors sharing what assets (if any) are left after claims of higher ranking Creditors. Employees do have greater protection in certain respects however including the following:Unpaid remuneration of up to a maximum of four months or ÂŁ800.00 which ever is less and holiday pay, both of which are regarded as preferential debts. A statutory redundancy payment or alternative payment under a Compromise Agreement or Collective Agreement may be claimed from the Secretary of State and paid out of the National Insurance fund.

CAR PARK CHANGES The responsibility of parking enforcement in Tewkesbury Borough’s council-run car parks has been contracted to an external company. The council decided in January to outsource all off-street parking enforcement to APCOA Parking (UK) ltd to create savings while continuing to provide the area with an effective service. The council retains decisions on car park charges, ensuring there are disability spaces and there will continue to be flexibility for supporting local events.

WHICH PART OF YOUR BODY IS MOST IMPORTANT? I wonder if you have ever wondered what part of your body is the most important. Your heart? Your legs? Your lungs? Your tongue? writes David Slater. I reckon it is your shoulder and at this time of considerable hardship in the country I want you to think seriously about allowing it to show its importance. When my mum was young her mum often asked her what was the most important body part. Over the years she gave a variety of answers. Ears? “No,” was the answer. “Many people are deaf so it isn’t the

ears.” Eyes? “Well sight is important, “said her mum, “but the answer is not right as many people are blind and have no sight. No. It is not eyes!” Feet?”Feet are certainly important,” said her mum “but there are many people who are not able to walk or have even lost their feet and legs so it isn’t the answer I am afraid.” Over the years I think mum went through almost all of the parts of the body in turn. In every case the body part was important but not the MOST important, at least in my gran’s eyes, that is.

One day, when my mum was a young teenage child in a family of ten or so children, her mum’s dad died suddenly. Life was tough in Wales in the 1920s and 1930s and this was just another major blow to the family. For the first time, even in such tough times, my mum saw her own mum in tears. Through the tears her mum asked that old familiar question. “Do you know now which the most important body part is?” Mum had to admit that she was at a loss.”Then I will tell you, “said her mum.”It is your shoulder!” “Because it holds up my head?”suggested my mum. “No,” was the response.”It is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one when they cry or feel upset and alone.

Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on some time in life. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it!” The most important body part is not a selfish one there to just bring pleasure or excitement. It is unselfish as it is one which is sympathetic to the pain of others. My mum had wonderful shoulders and I like to think that I inherited them too. Have the courage and strength and compassion to use YOUR shoulders to good effect. It could make all the difference! • People will forget what you said. • People will forget what you did. • But people will NEVER forget how you made them feel!

The York Waits were formed in 1977, and have played the length and breadth of UK, as well as touring in USA, Europe and Ireland. They use period instruments including lutes, shawms, bagpipes, and sackbuts. In addition to concerts they provide music for pageantry, performing for the Queen at last year's Maundy ceremony in York, and at historic re-enactments. The White Rose and the Red will be their tenth album, and tracks from their Cd's are frequently heard as background music on radio and television. The band was present at Bosworth in 1985, and did an extensive Spanish Armada tour in 1988. Other themes have included music from the time of York born Guy Fawkes, and a show marking the accession of Henry VIII.

TEWKESBURY GUIDES REFRESH VINTAGE FANS 1st Tewkesbury Guides were invited to run the tea rooms at last month's Vintage Fair in the Watson Hall to raise money for their chosen charity. The Guides and their Leaders worked round the clock serving teas and delicious homemade cakes to hungry stallholders and thirsty members of the public, writes Shelby Powell. The Guides raised £280 to for their chosen charity PoTS (Postural Tachycardia Syndrome). It’s a debilitating condition which causes fainting, dizziness and palpitations. The Guides picked this charity to help support one of their friends who has been diagnosed with the condition. The amount raised will help to fund a visit to a spe-

RECRUITMENT DRIVE FOR MARITIME VOLUNTEERS The Tewkesbury - based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Unit had a busy day on Saturday 14th April, when they had a recruitment stand at Gloucester Boat Jumble, near the docks. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Despite the inclement weather the event was well attended and our stall generated a lot of interest. “We displayed pictures showing our activities both afloat and ashore and our members were on hand to give details of the unit and provide various literature. “We are very hopeful that we may have attracted a number of new members who have been invited to come along to our training nights which are held every Monday evening at Tewkesbury Marina summer.”

Downlighters sit in a hole made into a plasterboard ceiling and allow air to pass through the fitting. If a fire starts in the room it can be contained for a period if windows and doors can be closed. There is, however, a weak point as downlighters can allow hot gasses and flames to penetrate the space between the ceiling and the floorboards of the room above. Modern fire rated downlighters contain a material that expands with heat, but is also heat resistant. This gives it the potential to block the path of a fire for up to ninety minutes. POLICE NOTES with Inspector Brian Murnaghan

A busy period for Tewkesbury Police A new author this month as your regular contributor Sergeant Matt Puttock has moved on to pastures new in Gloucester, writes Inspector Brian Murnaghan of Tewkesbury Police. Matt will be greatly missed from the team however his replacement Ps Henry Wright brings a wealth of policing experience to the local policing area and will be taking over Matt’s role once he settles into his new role. As I commence putting this update together just before Easter I look out the window and see snow settling on the ground and temperatures outside of below zero. It certainly has been a harsh winter and we all wait in expectation for the arrival of spring and some better weather!! On the policing front things are busy as ever. We had been suffering a spate of thefts of high value push bikes in the Churchdown and Longlevens areas recently and as a result of intelligence received we executed a search warrant at an address in Churchdown. I am pleased to report that a number of stolen bikes were recovered at this location and a number of individuals arrested. One male has been charged with burglary offences. All our teams were busy one morning last week when an elderly male with alzheimer’s disease went missing from the family home in Walton Cardiff. This is an occurrence which is

happening more and more regularly and an incident of this nature raises all our concerns. On this occasion we called in specialist search officers/dogs and called upon the services of the Force helicopter to assist.

After extensive enquiries which included press releases to local radio stations / media outlets and appeals on Twitter I am pleased to say this gentleman was located in the Bishops Cleeve area later that day. This incident highlighted the difficulties presented to many families who care for elderly relatives. The difficult side of our job presented itself to us over a weekend when a local well known male went missing from his boat near the Lower Lode Inn in Tewkesbury. Concerns were raised which eventually led a police dive team being deployed and unfortunately a body of a male was recovered from the river a short while later.

This is an example of the tragic side of our job as we deal with next of kin at a very difficult time. On a lighter note our local policing team took on the residents of Tolsey House in a “5 a side” football match Tolsey House is an establishment located within Tewkesbury which offers supported accommodation for local young people. This initiative greatly assists in “breaking down barriers” and helps build up communication between the youngsters themselves and local officers. The initiative was a great success, so much so that I am advised that the residents want another match!! I will be handing onto Ps Henry Wright for the next submission, so I here is hoping the Spring arrives soon. Stay safe and please feel free to contact us with any policing issues you may have. ROADSIDE LITTER - AND A WORD ABOUT CYCLISTS It’s amazing what you see when you get out of your car and start walking, as I have started doing to work on a daily basis. And the first thing you notice is all the litter, chucked out of peoples car windows, because they can’t be bothered to take it home or to a bin, writes Anthony Stockman. The proliferation of this curse has been provided by ‘fast food outlets’, such as McDonalds and KFC, but that’s not all. I see drinks cartons and bottles of all types: Costa Coffee, Wild Bean, Lucozade, Coke, Dr Peppers and many more and there’s something new every single day! Dropping litter is now a criminal offence, backed up at long last by some hefty fines. So reading this, if you’re one of the culprits; What is the matter with you? Have you no respect for the countryside and other peoples’ property? Do you know how much money is wasted in this country picking up your ‘don’t give a monkeys’ castoffs?...Well I’ll tell you; A staggering £885 MILLION, that what! Think how much of that could help the welfare budget everyone is whinging about. And so to cyclists: A pain to motorists, or just as much right to be there as anyone else? What brought this on was an acquaintance berating cyclists, because ‘they get in the way, they bunch up, they don’t pay any road tax and they don’t move quickly enough when you come up behind them’. Hmm, but they don’t make any noise, they don’t add to pollution, they don’t wear out the

road surface or take up much space and they don’t kill people or animals, (unless they’re the victim). So, as a dedicated petrol head, you might wonder whose side I’m on? Well there are some inconsiderate cyclists, but they’re easily outnumbered by impatient and inconsiderate car drivers by around 20:1 I’d say. Notice I didn’t include trucks, motor bikes or public services vehicles in that comment; that’s because generally, they’re much more bike aware. You’ve probably surmised by now, as well as a car nut and biker of all things ancient and modern, I’m a cyclist too – so here is my take on what many car drivers might assume about cycling, but don’t know, especially if they’ve never taken to two wheels themselves. Two important things to remember; the most important of which is this: cyclists don’t hear cars coming up behind them, mainly because of wind noise drowning out approaching traffic, which is why we/they look round a lot.

MOTORING MATTERS with Anthony Stockman So bear that in mind and apply a gentle toot toot of the horn when you’re closing in to alert the group that you’re there; they’ll thank you for it. Secondly, cyclists tend to bunch as a group on main roads rather than adopt single file riding, because as a bunch, a car can pull out and pass all of them at once and be on its way; a bit like passing a tractor. If they spread out in a file, car drivers would find it far more difficult and time consuming to pass, since that file could be 10 or 15 bikes long. If there are only two or three, then single file, with a car length between each rider is the more normal format. Understand those simple facts and life will be less stressful for all of us! UNEXPECTED GUESTS A couple of our recent call-outs have been to birds coming into houses via the chimney – not an uncommon scenario for us to deal with, but often a big shock for the homeowner, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue at Beckford. One call was to a house undergoing renovation after being flooded in November. The black and white thatched property was empty apart from a few tools but when the owners went in one weekend they were greeted by the sight of shredded curtains! Surprised by this, they looked around for an explanation, which came at them full flight – a very stressed tawny owl which had fallen down the chimney and was now trapped in the living room. The homeowners contacted the RSPCA who in turn put them in touch with us. On arrival, the owl was perched on the wooden light fittings at the top of the stairs, the highest point it could find (which they always

Another chimney call was to a ‘big black bird’ which was found in a child’s bedroom. Jackdaws are one of the most common birds to fall down chimneys as they often build their nests in the top of them. On this occasion there was no sign of the bird when we arrived and the only explanation was that it had found its own way out, back up the chimney, which doesn’t often happen.

Jackdaw facts: Scientific name – Corvus monedula. Family – Corvidae. A small, short-billed crow with a black cap and pale grey nape. They are sociable birds that often fly in flocks. They pair for life and even within a flock are rarely separated. Jackdaws breed from April-July and lay a clutch of 4-6 eggs. They feed on worms, seeds, scraps from the ground, caterpillars and berries. 56 jackdaws were admitted to Vale Wildlife Hospital during 2012. Birds in chimneys are a common problem. If you have an open chimney, it is recommended that a wire cap is put over the top to prevent any birds falling down it.
