Work has begun on Tewkesbury’s brand new Leisure Centre, which will ultimately replace the present Cascades complex. Located next to the council offices on Gloucester Road the new leisure centre will include a main 25m pool as well as a 20m learner/trainer pool - which will be bigger and deeper than the current learner pool at Cascades. This set up will allow more flexibility and the opportunity for more people to train and learn to swim. Recognising the popularity of the current fun features at Cascades, fountains and cannons will be among the attractions built into the new centre. There will also be a whole host of dry side facilities available too, including an adaptable 60 station gym, sauna and steam rooms, a flexible activities stu-

It’s official: Princess opens new community hospital HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the new Tewkesbury Community Hospital last month, when she unveiled a plaque at the purpose-built community health facility. The hospital, which first started to treat patients in Autumn 2013, cost £10 million and replaced an older building on an adjacent site in Barton Road. It provides clinical care for local needs including specialist outpatient clinics, children's services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, minor injury treatments, X-ray, ultrasound and mobile diagnostics. The hospital also has a state-of-the-art oper-

ating theatre and a recovery unit dealing with day case and minor surgical procedures. Princess Anne spent an hour at the hospital, where she met and chatted with staff. Footings have been dug at the edge of the village for a new housing development, to reveal a band of sand just below the ground which hasn’t been exposed for thousands of years. This reminds us that the land was once below the sea. Many sand extractions once quarries operated in the area - the last of them closed in the 1990s.

Great war exhibition comes to Tewkesbury A heart-warming, new exhibition commemorating the 1914-18 Great War, has been launched at Tewkesbury Heritage Centre. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of WW1, Tewkesbury Historical Society together with a Heritage Lottery Fund and Tewkesbury Borough Council - has teamed up with Bredon School in a bid to help its young children remember those who lost their lives during the Great War. The project, which has several aspects, will aim to commemorate those who gave their lives by bringing their past stories to life in a variety of creative displays at the exhibition. The children have been researching their own families and investigating how they have been affected by the war, with displays ranging from sculptures of the trenches to poems inspired by what they have learned. As part of the project, a book will also be produced by Tewkesbury Historical Society containing biographies of people from Tewkesbury Borough who lost their lives in the war and telling their personal stories.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Dave Waters said: “We’re just delighted to be hosting such a lovely exhibition at our heritage and visitor centre. “It’s a perfect example of an important community project, where Tewkesbury Historical Society has been able to use its knowledge of past world wars to help students realise what it’s meant for their relatives. I’d like to encourage as many people, of all ages, to come and support the children in their project.” Tewkesbury Historical Society’s President John Dixon said: “It has been a delight as a retired teacher to return to working with a committed and enthusiastic group of pupils. That weekend the awardwinning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is holding a Volunteer Recruitment Fair at The Railway Station, Toddington GL54 5DT. The event will give people the opportunity to see how they can become part of an award winning Heritage Railway and keep in running for future generations to enjoy. There are roles for everyone of all ages unskilled to highly skilled - in all sorts of departments. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway currently runs from Cheltenham Race Course to Laverton (north of Toddington) via Greet Tunnel and Winchcombe. A sign once located at Tewkesbury’s Watson Hall that came up sale at Church Street Auctions has been bought and donated to the Royal British Legion. Wendy Parry, steward at Tewkesbury branch of the Royal British Legion, accepted the relic from Tewkesbury Direct. It will be restored and hung in the foyer. Bearing the legend ‘Relics of the Tewkesbury Volunteer Cavalry, Enrolled 1803, Disbanded 1814’ it refers to

an early form of Territorial Army, who were cavalrymen. They were raised for defence against invasion in the Napoleonic Wars and served in Tewkesbury from 18031814, when the group was sixty strong under James Martin of Overbury Court.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Now the restoration of the former Girls’ High School is under way, surely it is time to restore this splendid building built c 1800 by the wealthy wine merchant and distiller Charles Embury, whose distillery occupied the modern beer garden of the Black Bear. In the 19th century it was known as Moffatt House after the Scottish birthplace of its owner, Rev. F. J. Scott, Vicar of Holy Trinity. This wealthy, reverend gentleman just happened to be the grandson of one killed the same day as Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar: “as if by the signal, seven or eight ships opened a fire upon the Victory, of the most destructive and trying kind. Mr Scott, the Admiral's Secretary, whilst conversing with Captain Hardy (of “Kiss me..” fame) was shot dead". Rev. Scott also owned the house next door, known - for now obvious reasons - as “Trafalgar House”. The Scotts were followed by Town Clerk H. A. Badham until his death in 1919, after which it became a private Temperance Hotel. In 1939 J. W. Gray suddenly died there. He was the brother of Bertie, living next door at Northend House (later partially burned in

1946) and was the son of the crooked Borough Surveyor who embezzled £3,800 in 1898 and disappeared to South Africa with his ill-gotten gains. Perhaps an appropriate location for the family’s nemesis? In 1949 the hotel had a resident, who gained fame as the last victim of serial killer John Haig. He thought that he had discovered the perfect method of murder - by dissolving the body in sulphuric acid.

He was wrong and he was hanged! In the 1960s it the hotel changed to the Riverside until 1996 when it became Montell’s Night Club. Now it is a decaying corpse. There once were rumours that the combined churches would turn it into a Temperance Youth Club – that really would be the perfect salvation for this august, but neglected, historic building.

The book covers the lives of an English N.C.O., a linguist with fluent Arabic, which is utilised when his corps is in North Africa before crossing the Mediterranean to Sicily. The Americans are represented by Ray, a foot soldier, who finds he survives Africa and once in Italy and separated from his colleagues, hides out in the attic of the local prince's palace. The prince and his daughter, who discovers Ray and aids his solitude, have an estate manager, ex-shepherd, Angilo who we first meet in the opening sequences of the book in 1926. Angilo is used by Ciro, the Mafia man who disappears off to New York leaving

behind his wife and child. It is Ciro's return as an American aide, which starts the Sicilian and Mafioso action. Against a background of war, with some excellent battle scenes described with great sensitive, the events in Sicily escalate. Ciro endeavouring to repossess his old life and discarded wife. A lot happens in this book; some of which was, in part, superfluous to the main story, where the events unravel with suspenseful action. Adam Foulds is an award-winning poet, and these qualities are self-evident in the well written and unusual story, set against the background and experiences of war. GETTING SET FOR SPRING

We are now coming to the end of the ‘quiet’ months in wildlife rehabilitation with spring just around the corner, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. For the past couple of months, apart from having 180 hedgehogs to look after, casualty numbers have been very low, although in the winter months we receive more call-outs at night to large mammals such as badgers, foxes and deer. This is due to two main reasons: 1) these animals are moving about more because the shortage of food means they have to travel further afield to find it, and 2) the nights are much longer so therefore there are more hours of darkness for these mainly nocturnal mammals to be active. Things will, however, change dramatically over the next few weeks and months with the warmer weather heralding the start of the breeding season for many species. We are said to be a nation of animal lovers and on the whole I am pleased to say that this is true, although we do see some horrific cases of animal cruelty from time to time, including some involving wild animals. However, when it comes to young wildlife, an act of compassion can often be the wrong thing to do and, hard though it may seem, you have to be cruel to be kind. I am referring to situations

Fox cubs can often be seen playing in the open with their siblings and, although there is no sign of the vixen, she will be there somewhere, watching discreetly when humans are around. Deer fawns are left for

several hours, sometimes for the whole day, while mum goes off to forage for food, so if you come across a fawn lying in long grass, nettles or tucked into a hedge, it is very unlikely that it needs help.

" Deer fawn Leverets are often mistaken for rabbits but, unlike rabbits, they are born fully-furred with their eyes open and are fully mobile from birth. Their ‘nest’, called a form, is not a burrow but is a depression in the ground often in the middle of a field, where the leverets will sit tightly while mum is away. This is perfectly normal and they should not be picked up. The message is do not touch or intervene until you have sought advice from a wildlife centre. The same is true of baby/young mammals, some of which can frequently be seen out alone but this doesn’t necessarily mean you should intervene.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is extending an invitation to anyone who would like to find out more about it. There will be videos and photographs from the early events, from the 1980s for those who want to engage in a bit of nostalgia, but plenty of opportunity to talk about things which will be happening this year and roles for volunteers. IN TIMELESS GRAFTON Grafton is the kind of place that even the backroad passes by. A rural, farming community little changed in over 100 years, it is probably the least visited of all the Bredon Hill villages - but one worth seeking out. It is best accessed on foot from neighbouring Ashton-under-Hill. Park your car with care on Ashton village street near St Barbaraâ€™s Parish Church. Walk through the churchyard (1) and as you enter a field bear diagonally right up the slope towards a hollow tree. Go over the stile to reach a lane, and turn left along it (2). After a short distance you will reach the small hamlet of Paris. Look for a house called Bredon Springs on your left: this was once the home of a botanist who discovered that many unusual plants would grow in his garden due to the warm water springs here. Walk on through Paris and follow the lane down the slope. Just after passing a house with tennis courts at the bottom of its garden, bear right along the edge of a field (3). You will eventually emerge into an open field: carry on straight along the edge to cross a footbridge over a stream

Look our for a small stone thatched building on your left called Norman Cottage; centuries ago this was a chapel of ease for the monastery at Beckford. Walk to the end of the lane, which descends to a farm gate (7). Bear left and walk downhill, passing some cottages and farm buildings. When you reach the road again (8), turn left and retrace your steps to point 3. From point 3, follow the waymarkers through a farm gate and diagonally across the field. Bear left at the fence and along the edge to return to the church.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater Confidence is a tool that you can use in your everyday life for all sorts of things. It is what helps you to manage fears and become more able to do more of the things that really matter to you, writes clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor David Slater. That self-confidence, remember, is just like any other muscle that you have in your body in that it grows and strengthens in response to the level of performance required of it and the energy put into it by you. I believe it is one of those things where either you use it or you lose it. This month I am outlining a few ways in which you can make sure that confidence grows : 1. Make sure you do something physical. It may be as simple as a walk or some gardening or even going to the gym which, I know, isn't for everyone. Physical activity can help you to feel mentally great. 2. Look at a success you have experienced and give yourself full credit for your part in it. Recognising your own achievements is not bigheaded. It can actually be healthy. 3. Make sure that you have total clarity about the things that really matter to you. If they are not in your life, now is the time to start introducing them. 4. Do one thing each day that makes you smile (on the outside or

the inside). 5. Stop playing different roles and contorting yourself so that you fit into boxes based on what you think people expect you to act like. Be yourself! 6. Learn to stop yourself every time that you tell yourself that you can't have, won't get or aren't good enough to get what you want. 7. Confidence sometimes means admitting that you are wrong always be ready to hold your hands up and be prepared to change your mind/direction because you see the change is right.

8. Don't feel like you have to do everything yourself - sometimes the most confident and constructive thing to do is to ask for help. 9. Don't get demotivated or disheartened when you get, after some struggle, to 90% with something that you are working on. Keep on going because you will see that it is in the last 10% where the magic happens. 10. Are you shy with new people? That is really not the problem that you have been thinking it is. Stop thinking that you are a lesser person because you are shy. The

more you think about it the worse it gets. So, think about your tho ughts and remember how easy it is to be what you think. 11. Make a plan to do something then make deliberate choices to fol-

low through on the way to achieving it. Progress, however small, gives you important self-reinforcement. 12. Look around you at the people that you respect who seem confident. Don't try to copy

Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service are planning to play their part once again in this year's Tewkesbury Big Weekend. Paul Cronin from the Avon Navigation Trust said “We are extremely grateful that the MVS has agreed to be the River Events lead safety support organisation.” This will mean the Unit will be on duty on the 2nd and 3rd May helping with the afloat based activities such as the bell boat and duck racing as well as doing their own water display. Unit vessel MVS Minerva will again lead the parade of boats through the Town when the Town Mayor will take the salute. We do hope everyone will come down to the river to join in the fun and support the events. After two years of fund raising the Severn Unit members have just purchased a Simrad Chartplotter/Radar which will be most useful when they go offshore and this should shortly be installed on their training boat Minerva. TEWKEBURY’S NEW PORSCHE CENTRE HOSTS THE CHAMBERS AGM Tewkesbury Chamber of Commerce met at the new Porsche Showrooms off Shannon Way for the initial meeting of 2015. The Chamber is once again active in Tewkesbury and 70 members and guests had the opportunity to look closely at the cars on display and to network with other businesses from both the industrial sector and the retail and

Tom is a seasoned engineer with over ten years in fabrication, shot blasting and powder coating. Many vintage vehicle enthusiasts choose powder coating for vehicle parts that are subject to abrasion and damp, such as motorcycle frames and vehicle wheels. The powder is sprayed onto the metal that has previously been shot blasted and then put into an oven to be baked on. The result is a very hardwearing and durable finish. TEWKESBURY MUSEUM Tewkesbury Museum re-opens from its winter break on March 31st, after a spring clean by volunteers and trustees. Its opening exhibition is The Arrival of the Arrival which traces the 17 years of work that led up to the installation of the award winning horse sculptures on the StoneHill's Roundabout. It will include the art work created by local school children for the banners carried by both steeds, and the original models for the sculptures and some of the unsuccessful entries. Videos taken throughout the work in progress will run during the exhibition. Other special exhibitions planned for 2015 include, Quakers in Tewkesbury, Tewkes-

bury People (you may be surprised by some of the well known or interesting people who have lived in our town) the Mop Fair and Remembrance. Entry to the museum is free, but donations are very welcome. Opening hours from April to August are Tuesday to Friday 1pm to 4pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm.

A SUPER NEW PAST TIME FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES Horseriding and horsecraft is a very popular past time and we asked Jo Bowen of Tewkesbury Riding School a little bit about what goes on at her school.

There is a ranged of services, from lessons to arena hire. The riding school is open for clients on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays, and there are pony clubs events and parties. Lessons are available for riders of any ability from the age of four upwards and there are four different types of lessons for both adults and children, these include; Group Lessons, held on both Saturday and Wednesday evening. These lessons are for novice to experienced riders. With various groups catering for

those learning to canter to the more advanced rider. These lessons last half an hour or an hour. Private Lessons, these lessons cater for any ability and can specialise in flatwork or jumping, they can last either half an hour or an hour. There is the opportunity for children to stay from 9.00 to 4.00 on a Saturday to gain valuable learning experience on a running yard. They will be supervised by a member of the team and assist in yard duties such as tacking up, grooming and stable management. Children

also have two one hour lessons, one specialising in flatwork and the other in jumping. We have a half hour hack for an experienced rider who just wants a relaxing ride, with miles of on road and off road hacking, there are also fun hacks. All riders who go on a hack must undergo an evaluation of their riding first and is for a minimum of two people. Or if you prefer there is a one hour hack. A longer ride, this can be catered to be fast paced or steady. There are children’s

partied for any ability of rider, these include a series of gymkhana games followed by use of the Summer House for games and food. Jo says “We have a lot of happy riders. If you are interested give me a call and try something new”. For more information please call Jo on 07879 027790.

THE WI CENTENARY BATON The Federation Link Baton, which started its journey on 1st January from Anglesey where the first WI meeting was held in `1915, will reach Tewkesbury on 20th March. Announced by the Town Crier, Mitton WI will hand over the baton to Newtown WI outside the Abbey at approximately 10.45am. Newtown WI will carry it to the Stonehills roundabout aboard a 1950’s milk float, kindly lent by Roger Workman of Cotteswold Dairy Ltd. WI members will accompany the float on foot, clothed in varied styles from the century since the foundation of the WI movement. Town Mayor Christine Danter, will be by the sculptures of the knight and horses, to welcome

the baton and its escort before the party leaves again at 11.45am for Lower Lode Lane. The baton will be taken across the Severn with the assistance of SARA (or the local fire brigade if Severn Rescue is called away). At the Lower Lode Inn, the baton will be passed to Forthampton WI at 12.30pm, to continue its adventurous journey to the Albert Hall,London in time for the Centenary Annual Meeting of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, on 4th June.

The neighbourhood policing team have attended various community events with various items to make you home, outbuildings and bicycles more secure. Tewkesbury Police Community Support Officers have been selling shed alarms, window locks, heavy duty D locks for pedal cycles as well as many other useful security products. This initiative has been set up with the assistance of the Gloucestershire Constabulary crime reduction officers. Again I have been reviewing our recent crime trends and we have had a number of thefts from motor vehi-

cles. There have been two main groups vans where tools have been taken and cars parked at local

beauty spots where walkers leave their vehicles prior to going for a walk. Firstly try not to leave expensive power tools in your van at all ,the next best thing is to get secure tool chest which is bolted to the floor. Next ensure that the locks are adequate and if they are not upgrade them. Think about where you park: is it possible to

back up against a building so the rear doors cannot be opened? Importantly, make sure your insurance cover is adequate to cover the contents should the worst happen not forgetting it takes valuable time to replace specialist items which may lose you valuable work. When leaving a vehicle at a beauty spot, one golden rule is that if you do not need something for your walk, leave it at home. If you do, then make sure valuable items are placed out of sight. But don’t put your handbag in the boot when you get there thieves may be watching you and as soon as you are out of sight they will strike. FLY THE FLAG FOR THE COMMONWEALTH Members of the public are invited to join the Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough at a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate Commonwealth Day this month. On Monday 9th March, Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough Cllr Mike Dean will raise the Commonwealth flag at Tewkesbury Borough Council’s offices so it can fly from 10am to midnight as part of the celebration of Commonwealth Day. Match time was limited for Tewkesbury's under 11's Colts football team last month. A number of games being called off due to the frosty mornings. Eckington Juniors travelled to Puckrup at the end of January in the second round if the AEFL plate and they demonstrated why they are in the top league at this age group.
