SOLAR PARK DUE TO CONNECT IN MARCH The area’s newest Solar Energy Farm, at Stoke Orchard near Tewkesbury, is due to connect to the National Grid later this month. Being constructed by Inelsa and funded by Sun Edison - an organisation which is working towards delivering clean, affordable energy - the facility will be a 30.8MW site. A network of solar panels will be spread over an area of more than forty hectares to harvest electricity from sunlight.

The forgotten pubs of Tewkesbury are being highlighted in an exhibition at the town museum in Barton Street. Many of the former hostelries are also participating, by displaying signs in their windows (as shown here at the former Prince of Wales Inn, on the corner of Oldbury Road). The exhibition runs until the end of March and a talk on the town’s lost pubs will be held on Wednesday 16th March at the Boys’Brigade Club Room. (More on page 21).

EASTER COMES TO CROOME

One of the area’s most popular National Trust Properties, Croome Court and Landscape Park, has a host of family-friendly activities lined up for the Easter holidays.

Croome, off the main A38 ten miles to the north of Tewkesbury, was Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s first major project, commissioned in 1751 by the Earl of Coventry. Brown transformed the grounds, sweeping away the original Croome village and church and re-building them elsewhere so they didn’t interrupt the views from Croome Court! As well as creating a memorable landscape, he built several follies throughout the park ‘eyecatchers’ on the boundaries - created a grotto, lake, river and planted a diverse and extensive collection of trees and shrubs. Over the years it fell into decline and serious neglect. The Court was sold and at various times became used as a school, religious commune and a conference centre. It even became

part of the secret wartime RAF station at Defford in the 1940s. Acquired by the National Trust in 1996, a great deal has been done in the past two decades to restore Croome to its former glory. There is now much to see both inside the house - with its fascinating history - and in the extensive grounds. This Easter visitors can hunt for Easter eggs, following clues to unravel the mystery of the lost eggs. The trail is open 10am-4pm from Thursday 24th March until 10th April. On Sunday 13th March there will be a seasonal market, whilst on Wednesday 9th March ‘Croome After Dark’ is a chance to walk around the park after dark, guided by the NT team. Work begins at Hayles Abbey Halt

RAILWAY HALT TO RE-OPEN AFTER FIFTY SEVEN YEARS Footings for a new rail platform at the former site of Hayles Abbey Halt have begun. The halt is on the popular Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, one mile south of Toddington Station, and is being reinstated to serve the the nearby ruins of the old Hailes Abbey. The abbey was built in 1246 by Richard Duke of Cornwall, the second son of King John, apparently after Richard made a vow while being in peril on the sea. In 1928 the Great Western Railway opened their Halt at the same time as the ruins were opened to the public, and after a short life the halt was closed (due to the decline of rail servic-

es) on 7th March 1960. The halt will also serve two nearby and very popular long distance footpaths, the Winchcombe Way and the Cotswold Way. It should be an optional treat for walkers to plan a heritage steam train ride and to sample the many sights and facilities that the railway has to offer. The Winchcombe Way is a figure of eight route centred on the ancient Saxon borough. The eastern loop passes through Hailes and the ruins of the thirteenth century Cistercian abbey, which is now in the stewardship of English

Heritage. Near the abbey is an equally fascinating church, famous for its wall paintings, which pre-dates the abbey by over half a century. The halt’s platform will be two coaches long and is being built in the style of the original. A GWR waiting shelter has been rescued from Usk in Monmouthshire for use there, and it is expected that the halt will be ready for use sometime next year. A special deal has been struck with local company Building and Plumbing Supplies to help with sponsorship of some of the materials, which has helped this interesting project to move forward. Services on the GWR resume on Saturday 5th March and will run every weekend throughout the season. There will also be trains during the Easter period and many special events this year. Tewkesbury school students are snap happy Local professional photographer, Jack Boskett, organised a photographic competition for Tewkesbury School students recently. The competition, entitled 'My View of Tewkesbury' was open to all students at the school including the sixth form. The competition was held over the Christmas period and was judged in January. In total, forty six submissions were made with prizes for the top three images, which were judged by Jack and his team. The former Tewkesbury School pupil has been in business for six years in the town as a professional photographer - and has been the school's official photographer for four years. “I spent seven years at Tewkesbury School as a student, but I cannot remember there ever being a competition like this, said Jack. “I wanted the students to think outside the box by coming up with something a bit different. We all know that our town is blessed with some beautiful scenery; they just needed to go out there and take advantage of that. “I was overwhelmed with the entries, several images could have made the top three - it was so hard to choose. “It made it all worthwhile seeing Adela's face when her name was called out in assembly for winning first prize; she was really excited. “We will hold another competition next year for

TOWN BIDS FAREWELL TO DAIRY FOUNDER The founder of one of Tewkesbury's most celebrated businesses, Cotteswold Dairy, has passed away. Harry Workman - who would have celebrated his 99th birthday later this year - enjoyed a long and rewarding life right up until his passing on Friday 22nd January. Harry Workman was born on 12th October 1917, the youngest son of Oliver and Alice. With three elder sisters and three older brothers, life was busy and Sundays were always spent wearing their Sunday best with church in the morning, Sunday School in the afternoon, church in the evening and then ending up the day with a good sing at the Salvation Army! At the age of 14, Harry left school and had the choice of two occupations - to work at

W.H. Smith’s selling newspapers at Tewkesbury railway station, or to become an apprentice at the International Stores. His mother, who was quite a character, decided the latter would be better so off he went. At the International Stores you were taught three things; Quality, Service and Cleanliness. These values were instilled in Harry at a young age and that is one of the reasons you always saw him in a smart white coat whilst

The late Harry Workman

he worked. When he was 20, Harry had the opportunity to buy a milk round from his brother- in-law Eric Brown and so in 1938, Cotteswold Dairy began as Spa Farm Dairy. Harry bought a thirty gallon per day milk round with money he borrowed from his mother. He purchased a Morris 8 van, milk churns and bottles and on May 1st 1938, started his door-to-door delivery by bucket and ladle. Harry met Dorothy in Stroud and they were married for over 60 years. Sadly Dorothy passed away in 2002. They had four children, Ann, Roger, Philip and Kathryn and the family has now grown to fourteen grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren – all of whom were very fond of ‘Grandpa’ and held him in the most uppermost respect. Harry had a love for his home town of Tewkesbury and was honoured to serve as Town Mayor twice, between 1959–1961. He was involved with many organisations, including the Boys Brigade, Round Table,

Rotary and Tewkesbury in Bloom. Harry had a strong Christian faith and supported churches in the town and surrounding area, often preaching in services. He was a popular speaker at many local groups telling stories of life in Tewkesbury, and of the dairy's history. In 2003 Harry was inspired to write down his ‘Memories of Tewkesbury’ retelling stories from his childhood and as he grew up. These are so informative about life in Tewkesbury and all the characters that there were. Harry always had a wide circle of friends and over time grew a close friendship with Pat, who has been his trusted and wonderful companion until now. Harry grew fond of all of Pat's family and everyone who met Harry couldn’t help but love and respect him. He always had a kind word to say about people and was quite inspirational. Up until recently Harry could been seen out in Tewkesbury and would always stop and talk to folk that he met. He was always telling a story and loved to laugh.

Tightrope by Simon Mawer PB £8.99 This book is set in post-war London and the main character is Marion Sutro, who was a WW2 SOE agent and Mawer's earlier book 'The Girl who Fell from the Sky' recounts her wartime experiences. The end of the war sees Marion as a survivor from the Ravensbruck concentration camp, her escape aided by subterfuge and false identity. Back in the UK it takes her time to get her life back into any routine, staying with her parents in Oxford and not settling until she meets RAF man Alan who she eventually marries. Her new life is not fulfilling and the adventures in this book begin with a meeting with a Russian, Absolon, in Hamburg and then being recontacted by M15 and her old SOE contact, Fawley. Alongside this, a main theme is the development of the Hbomb, her brother, Ned was involved and Marion played her part, (do read the first book). The siblings want to neutralise the

West's power and Ned leaks information from Harwell via his sister and her developing relationship with Absolon to the Russians. How this all expands with mounting tension and increasing subterfuge and intrigue is all recounted in back flash between Marion, now an old lady in Switzerland and Sam Wareham, who knew her when he was a child in Oxford, but now is visiting her to try to 'close her file' as an operative of the British Secret Service; and they have a past as well. THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA Whether Facebook, Twitter or one of the other social media groups available today, their power is enormous, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. 32 years ago, when Vale Wildlife Hospital began, the internet didn’t exist and we relied on newspapers, television and radio to get our messages across. There were no such things as emails, only snail mail for sending out newsletters, appeals, acknowledgements, grant applications etc. Today, things are massively different with the internet and emails and with most of us having smartphones meaning mobiles are no longer just used for telephone calls but for just about everything that we can do on our PCs.

Fundraising is absolutely vital to us and is something that we constantly need to do in order to raise the £30,000 that we need every month to continue our work. It is a daunting task as, not only do we have the lives of 4,000+ casualties per year in our hands but we are also responsible for the livelihoods of 17 staff members so we have to take advantage of every type of media for publicity and for keeping the charity in the public eye. We use Facebook and Twitter constantly and the charity has a group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/groups/valew ildlife) and a Twitter account twitter.com/wildliferescuer where hundreds of followers can keep up-to-date with what is going on at Vale Wildlife Hospital. A recent post about an otter that was brought in by the RSPCA was seen and shared by thousands of people. The adult otter had been found with a snare around his chest which had caused massive wounds to him. It had been there for so long that there were areas where the wound had healed completely over the top of the snare. Sadly he died while we were trying to remove the snare and treat his wounds but

because his case was publicised on social media and generated a massive response from all the people who viewed it. It highlighted the barbarity of snares once again and helped other organisations such as the League Against Cruel Sports and Snarewatch to gain more support on their petitions to get the use of snares banned. Using social media in this way helps other charities too which we are very keen to do, and ultimately it gives vital publicity to us and to others as well as bringing important issues, which the general public often aren’t aware of, to the fore. Our busy season is almost upon us as the start of spring also means the start of the breeding season for most birds and mammals. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society We can only rejoice that a redundant shop in our precinct has been occupied and that Boot’s Opticians and ‘hearingcare’ has presented the High Street with a much more satisfactory façade than for the main shop, writes John Dixon. As the redevelopment took place nearly 50 years ago, few people will remember that the site was previously occupied by Vic Watson’s Tewkesbury Car Mart. No one, however, will be able to recall that the garage took over the redundant coach making firm of Sharpe and Sheward, the ‘Manufactory’ having closed in 1917. It is likely that Mr Sharpe commissioned the building in about 1840 after he had astutely acquired two old pubs; the Plume of Feathers and the Sun were both promptly knocked down to make way for the Manufactory and the Railway Station. The Sun Inn gave its name to old Sun Street – and, just to confuse us, the town planners of 1970 moved Sun Street, from the site of the greengrocer’s to its present location by the Library.

MUSEUM MUSINGS Tewkesbury Museum Lecture/Talks were brought to a seasonal end on February 2nd. The 'Lost and Forgotten Pubs of Tewkesbury' talk given by Steve Goodchild exceeded all our expectations regarding the number of people that turned up. Many people had to stand at the back and down the sides of the room, in fact, a small number of folk had to be turned away because we were at our full capacity. We apologise for those not able to attend and to those that had to stand throughout the event. It was a very pleasant surprise that there was such great interest in the subject. The talk was well received with many memories brought to light of buildings that were once public houses and also childhood homes of some of the audience, now many either demolished in the name of progress, individual shops or a corporate businesses we hardly recognise. I hasten to add that probably not everyone is up for a talk on pubs, but Tewkesbury's history is always worth a visit now and again and for this you can visit Tewkesbury Museum in Barton Street where currently an exhibition on the 'Lost and Forgotten Pubs' will continue until the end of March during the Museum's Winter opening times and by special request if closed. The final seasonal Museum Lecture/Talks for this winter, set as advertised for Monday February 15th has been postponed until the Autumn as the speaker, our own Town Serjeant and Common Crier, is presently unwell and unable to give his presentation. We all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to hearing his bell ringing and booming voice back on our streets again very soon. The Trustees of Tewkesbury Museum again thank everyone for their continued support and remind you that should anyone wish to become a 'Friend' of the museum or a volunteer please get in touch.

FAMILY HISTORY, INSPIRES JANE TO WRITE ABOUT THE COLONIAL PAST After four years of researching, writing and editing, local author, Jane Gill, who worked in Tewkesbury for many years, recently published her first novel; Dance with Fireflies. Inspired by her family history, the novel is based on a true story.

Jane’s maternal grandmother, Phyllis, is the book’s protagonist. Phyllis was an AngloIndian memsahib from the British Raj and was a prolific letter writer. Much of the correspondence remains, along

with diaries, photograph albums, and even a handwritten cookbook handed down through five generations. The author grew up surrounded by glimpses of her grandmother’s life in India; from stories of the voyage on a troopship from Bombay to Southampton in 1939, the colonial bungalow Phyllis was brought up in and the restaurant she ran in the foothills of the Himalayas. Newly arrived from the crumbling Raj where Phyllis lived a life of great privilege, she struggled to cope with her English in-law’s cold

and increasingly cruel attitude. The in-laws make perfect antagonists as they in turn find it hard to tolerate the high-spirited ‘foreigner’. As the story unravels, Phyllis finds herself trying to save her baby after she is snatched by her childless sister-inlaw. Jane Gill recently travelled to India to speak at The Kumaon Literary Festival about Dance with Fireflies. A MARCH MAKEOVER with Emma Lawson of Ell Hair Salon For March Emma invited Lynda Smallwood, a Fish Monger at Morrisons, for a makeover. Emma started with i prime to even out the skin, using i conceal light under eyes just to lift. I tint light tinted moisturiser was applied to give a nice glow and I powder light to seal. It will take place on Sunday July 10th. Bands, jesters and knights in armour will be joining in, and everyone is invited to join them. The theme will once again be medieval, and workshops are being organised with local artists going into schools to work with the children on their entries. One of the most popular entries last year was a contingent of senior citizens on mobility schools, decorated as horses for jousting knights, dragons and other suitable subjects. The organisers would like to see this happen again, and say that workshops to decorate

BENEATH THE WESTERN SLOPES This month's ramble takes in three interesting villages beneath the western slopes of Bredon Hill, with excellent open views towards the Malvern Hills on a clear day, writes Jack B. Walker.

Distance: Approximately 4 miles, undulating. Car Parking: Small roadside car park in Dock Lane, by the picnic area next to the River Avon. The starting point is the village of Bredon, just over three miles from Tewkesbury which is accessible by the 540 bus (not Sundays). If you are driving, park by the picnic area in Dock Lane. This is next to the river Avon so do check flood warnings and river levels before setting off! Walk along the road with the river to your left, passing the boat yards. Carry on up the slope and at the end of the lane, just by the drive way to Mill End farm, go through the metal gate on the left and go along a fenced path towards a small wood. (1). Walk through the wood, then emerge and follow the path straight ahead across the field. Go through a gap in some trees and down towards a railway embankment. Pass under the railway and across a small field to a stile. (2). Cross the busy B4080 with care and go up over the stile in the hedge directly opposite, across another small field and out on to a lane. Turn left and head towards the village of Bredonâ€™s Norton.

River Avon at Bredon Dock As you reach the first few houses and the lane narrows, turn right after April Cottage (3) and follow the yellow direction arrow, over a stile and across a paddock. On reaching a small metal gate in a fence (4), go through and turn immediately right along the path, keeping the fence on your right. The lower slopes of Bredon Hill are now to your left. Go over another stile next to a five bar gate, and walk along the path with a hedge on your left. Cross a footbridge and keep following the path until it descends beside an embankment, and go over another small bridge. On your left now is Beggar Boys Nature Reserve.

Follow the yellow waymarkers around the edge of the reserve, until you come to its entrance gate and information signs. Turn right (5) and walk up the edge of the field with the hedge on your right. At the end of the field pass some barns and turn left up a lane into Westmancote. At the T junction turn right and walk down through the village, passing a converted chapel. Take the footpath (right) across the edge of some open ground you will see a sports field over a fence ahead of you. (6). After a short distance take the path diagonally to your left, and go towards a kissing gate in

a hedge between two telegraph poles. Go through the gate and along a narrow path. One interesting feature here is the miniature railway in the grounds of a house on the left - complete with advertising signs, a tiny station and bridge crossing the track. At the end of the path, you will meet a road. Cross over and go through the kissing gate into the field opposite. (7). Walk along the path, keeping the row of trees on your right, until you reach the main Bredon to Pershore road. (8). Go through the gate and turn left, proceeding with caution along the main road until you reach the proper footway. At the dip, just before the main road crosses a stream, walkers without dogs may turn left into the playing fields and carry on up the slope towards the village. Otherwise keep straight ahead along the road, turning right at the T junction to walk back over the railway bridge into Bredon village. (9). You will pass the pubs and village stores on the way back to Dock Lane.

IN MEMORY OF JEAN BADHAM 1929 - 2016 Jean Badham, one of the founders of the successful Badham's Pharmacy chain, passed away at the end of January, aged 86. Her son, Tewkesbury Town Mayor, Councillor John Badham, reflects upon her life. “To almost everyone their mum is special. I am doubly blessed because, firstly, there are not many men of my age whose mother was still around. Secondly, because she was a truly exceptional lady. “This opinion is not just mine, as over 200 people who attended her funeral can testify. “She was not just a mum, but also a much loved daughter, sister, and friend. In truth I was not the easiest of sons. I wanted as little to do with the business she loved as possible. Let's not forget she largely created one of the most successful family businesses in the county, and was involved with it for 68 years! "Her care for everyone who worked for her was amazing - never a birthday forgotten or a special occasion missed. “I was a nightmare adolescent always getting in and out of scrapes - all which she tolerated, if not exactly encouraged! “I suspect that of all her children - three sons, David, Paul and Peter and a daughter Faith - I gave her the most headaches. But even while I was financing myself at college, I could always rely on her to slip me the odd tenner when I was short. “She loved all her grandchildren and great grandchildren with a particular intensity of feeling. laws became like daughters to her. This, of course, never detracted from the very special bond she had with her own daughter, Faith, whom she often visited in Australia. “And when I was ill - some years ago - mum was so very supportive in every possible way. “What in the end made her special for so many, was that she was always optimistic, usually nonjudgmental and always loving and caring to everyone she met. “She was amazingly generous. In her later years she gave over a quarter of her income to charity, and was always willing to help anyone in trouble. She had a true zest for life until her dying day. “All I can say is that I will miss her so much - she has left a huge hole in my life. I know that what I have said will resonate with many who have also lost beloved parents. I hope this expression of my grief will have some meaning to others.” John Badham

75 years ago on August 1941, a Polish priest, Father Maximilian Kolbe died as a prisoner in Auschwitz. A fellow prisoner had escaped from the camp and in reprisal the Nazis selected 10 others to be killed by starva on. One of the ten selected to die, Franciszek Gajowniczek began to cry out: ‘My wife! My children! I will never see them again’. At this Kolbe stepped forward and asked to die in his place. His request was granted. Gajowniczek later recalled: ‘I could only thank him with my eyes. I was stunned and could hardly grasp what was going on. The immensity of it: I, the condemned, am to live and someone else willingly and voluntarily oﬀers his life for me – a stranger. Is this some dream? I was saved. And I owe to him the fact that I could tell all this!’ In the starva on bunker, Maximilian Kolbe encouraged the others with prayers, psalms and medita ons on the passion of Christ. Father Kolbe was the last of the prisoners to die. In this act of sacrificial love he imitated the love of Jesus when he died on the cross, laying down his life out of love for us all. Jesus stepped forward to put himself in our place and paid the penalty our wrong doing deserves. Love for me and you compelled him. That’s tough love! Rev. SEVERN UNIT MVS LEARNS MORE ABOUT MARINE ECOLOGY Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service had a most interesting evening recently when Natasha Quickfall a marine ecologist from Ocean Ecology near Gloucester came to speak to them. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We had an excellent evening and are grateful to Natasha and her colleague Roma Banga coming to tell us all about the work this local company does in the important field of

marine ecology including protection of marine mammals and other protected species. The Company provides a range of maritime ecological surveys and consultancy services for projects offshore and Severn Unit were shown how data is gathered

Severn Unit is now preparing for the Spring season when they will be afloat more and are busy planning their water displays and stand for the Big Weekend to assist the Avon Navigation Trust on 7th and 8th of May which is always a busy time.

Wheatpieces Parish Council March 2016 Newsle er Parking The Parish Council are receiving increased complaints regarding parking problems on the estate roads with regular hot-spots being on Cambrian Rd/ Gadwell Rd / Graylag Crescent / Widgeon Lane / Gainsborough Rd / Henry Crescent / Crown Rd / Beauchamp Rd and Starling Rd especially during most evenings and at weekends. The main reasons for the problems are: • Residents not using their allocated driveway / courtyard parking spaces and simply parking on the roadside including parking on the footpaths. • Residents vehicles being inconsiderately parked on the corners or directly opposite road junc ons thus crea ng visibility problems for motorists - this is irresponsible and poten ally dangerous. • Inconsiderate parking of vehicles on both sides of the road crea ng minimal passing space. Residents should be aware that all the estate roads should allow for access of emergency vehicles at all mes and currently this poses a major problem should they be called out. The Parish Council therefore appeals to all residents to cooperate in this ma er for the beneﬁt of all concerned. If these parking problems persist it may be necessary to impose a Traﬃc Regula on Order which would result in certain road sec ons having double yellow lines installed to prevent parking on the roadside - hopefully with residents coopera on it won't come to that.

STAYING SAFE, WARM AND WELL On Saturday 5th March Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service will be talking to Tewkesbury residents about how they can stay safe, warm and well in their homes. Crews will be giving FREE Home Safe and Well checks as well as fitting free smoke alarms. Fire-fighters, Tewkesbury Borough Council, The Red Cross, The Road Safety Partnership, Local Police and other agencies will be giving advice at the Jubilee II Building (next to Queen Margaret School), York Road, Priors Park on Saturday 5th March between 10am and 2pm and would love to see you there. In addition, crews will be visiting homes in Priors Park carrying out Safe and Well checks, fitting smoke alarms and giving advice on issues such as; the risk of falls within the home, social isolation, cold homes, flu and well being. Led by our conductor, John Wilderspin, we are fortunate to have some amazing soloists for our concert in Pershore Abbey on Saturday 23rd April. Maria Jagusz, our President from Cirencester, is a soloist of note and a fine teacher who has led many of her students into successful careers in musical theatre and opera. Elizabeth MacDonald from Worcestershire has performed in a great variety of opera and choral works in this country and abroad. Joel Williams, a student from

the Royal College of Music and Jonathan Hyde, a student from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, are well experienced in a great range of musical works. Our soloists and orchestra, conducted by John Wilderspin and Diggory Seacome and led by George Ewart, allows us to give a full well rounded concert which includes

Beethoven’s Mass in C, two Romances for violin and orchestra (violin soloist George Ewart), Hallelujah Chorus (from Mount of Olives) and Symphony No.8 (conducted by Diggory Seacome). Pershore Abbey is a wonderful building to both perform in and be a member of the audience. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £15.

Owner Emma Lawson hosted the afternoon and was joined by friends Tina, who bought a selection of fine Italian clothes, Sarah who promoted Lush stuff, Sara doing nailcare and eyebrow threading, and Will Davis photographer was recording the event. Emma herself was demonstrating the range

MORE FASCINATING COMPARISONS WITH TEWKESBURY’S TOWN CENTRE From a Tewkesbury town guide from 1902, we compare the photographs and advertisements of then to the properties in the present day. The first comparison is of 6 High Street, which used to be a grocery and wine shop which sold Croome Hunt Whisky, no doubt a local blend. Today the shop is the home of Rage Hair, the key to its past is the arched fanlight window as the ground floor has been modernised. Moving up the other side of the High Street we reach Fowlers, the Family Grocers, again providers of food and drink. The building is easily identifiable as the former Merlin’s shop and

today displays it’s former name of Gift Horse. The ground floor has changed appearance and the pointed roof has been cut down at some stage. The next shopfront we visit, is of Paxman Jewellers, and presents itself today as one of the towns most original frontages. Now trading as Butwell and Sons, the building retains its curved glass corner window, many examples of this wonderful glazing style have been replaced with flat glass panes, a

tragedy in the authors view. As an additional gem is the survival of the gold leaf glass signage that can be seen today. Next we visit Jones the Chemist at 147 High Street, and again it is apparent the shop front has changed, trading today as the Break Charity vintage shop. It seems as the building has undergone some movement since 1902 as seen by the warping of the brick work above the left hand window and the addition of two tie bars.

The joys of keeping chickens: good management controls disease All chickens come from Jungle Fowl (Gallus Gallus), writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only Pet Supplies in Northway. These are South American birds that live under a canopy of trees, enjoying shelter. Bear this in mind when keeping chickens. Here are some tips regarding their management: Hutch • One laying ne• t• per three birds. • Use shavings in the nest. • Don’t wash eggs, as this will remove a wax•• membrane an• • allow bacterial infection. • Place perches higher than nests. Birds will roost and mess the nests overnight and dirty eggs. • Round, not square, perches average of 2” diameter. • Chickens must dust bath. This is their way of grooming and controlling parasites. • Keep grooming box inside hutch. Keep dry. • Mix mite powder with childrens play sand into a cat litter tray. • Clip one wing, once per year. With clipped wings fence needs to be four feet high. • Rotate two range areas to aid grass recovery. • Do not use treated bark. Hygiene • Keep feeder and water

MIXED MESSAGES FROM DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Motoring Centre Patients have being encouraged for some time ,to visit their Pharmacy First, to reduce pressure on A&E, hospitals and GPs, writes Peter Badham. Just before Christmas the Department informed all pharmacists that it will reduce our payments from this October, and expects to see at least 1,000 pharmacies close as a result of the cuts. Whilst I accept that we are in period of austerity, the message is mixed, when so many pharmacies are set to close.

LIFE CAN, AND SHOULD - BE FUN! So many of us take life very seriously. Many people take life too seriously and need to learn ways of lightening the load a little. Often it is tied up with the whole confidence issue., writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater.This month we take a look at how best to " Lighten Up!" It is very often the person who lacks self confidence who takes himself the most seriously who ends up being the butt of jibes and criticism and feel the weight of self-doubt. The less anxious you can be the more confident you will appear. So, that advice to lighten up is good advice. It is just knowing how to do it. Get with people who have a good sense of humour as its impossible to laugh and feel anxious at the same time. Laughing, and having others laugh with you NOT at you, is a terrific boost to self esteem. During the next week I want you to examine your own behaviour patterns. Determine how often

you do the following: Take offence. Say “I.” Talk about yourself and your problems or feelings. Sulk or go into a moody shell. Over analyse situations. If the answer comes up as often for any of these then it is a sure sign that you are in need of lightening up. Take the opportunity as often as you can of having a good laugh. Watch comic programmes, read lighthearted books, watch funny films or DVDs. When things don’t go well for you, as this is something that will happen from time to time, step back and try and see a funny side to it! Watch your behav-
