by Jon McGregor Paperback, £8.99 When I finished reading this book, I thought, I shall not read a better novel all year, and in 2017 that did prove to be the case. Whilst the story is centred on the disappearance of a girl, the structure of the narrative is so far more encompassing and enchanting. Much of it reads more like an appreciation of our English countryside, and of the natural history that surrounds us, and indeed is the background on which the inhabitants of a certain midland village live their lives over thirteen years following the event. Whilst the girl's parents are naturally featured, they are actually minor characters alongside the villagers who range across the generations from teenagers, maturing into University students, to married couples, the butcher and his wife who separate following the collapse of their business, a widower, who bakes cakes for the lady who helps him by walking his dog. There are farmers, teachers, journalists; a broad spectrum of life as is found in any rural setting. Each chapter is a year, taken through the seasons month by month, and each of the village characters, and their lives filter through the years so whilst the reader might not follow everyone over the book each life unfolds before your eyes. It is the seasonality of this story

Lots of new sustainable stock in for Spring featuring references to herons, butterflies, flowers, lambing to name but a few; supported by village life evolving, the pub "The Gladstone", parish council meetings, carol services, and pantos to the newsletter, even the school boiler; these all become characterisations in their own right. Above the village there are reservoirs, and mining, so village life is not necessarily quiet, and there is the odd trip into the local town, but this beautifully written novel provides a lovely landscape against which the villagers inhabit their surroundings. We, the reader can experience their lives, their loves, the ups and downs, the rituals and routines; births, deaths and marriages along with the odd dalliance, there is just so much contained within this Booker long listed novel; alas it did not win. New beer strikes the right chord Well-known bands The Wonder Stuff and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin have teamed up with Froth Blowers Brewery to launch a limited edition ale, ‘Ned’s Wonder’. Tewkesbury resident Will Hunt, from Froth Blowers brewery, describes the beer as “as balanced golden ale with a floral start and a subtle caramel finish.” It will be sold during the two bands ‘Love From Stourbridge Tour’ in March and April 2018. The beer made its public debut at the end of January when The Wonder Stuff’s frontman, Miles Hunt, was joined by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin vocalist, Jonn Penney, and guitarist, Rat, for a celebratory acoustic session.

KAISERSCHLACHT! 21 MARCH 1918 Before 21st March 1918, Tewkesbury had lost 131 sons of Tewkesbury to the first three and a half years of the war, writes John Dixon. Before the war ended, another 64 sons - and a daughter - were lost. It might seem as though the worst was over - but the average loss per month was three while in the last eight months of the war, eight were lost each month. 21st March 1918 is a ‘Black Letter Day’ because the Germans sprung an unprecedented surprise with its Kaiserschlacht – the Emperor’s Attack a mas-

sive offensive on the Western Front by which it was aimed to make up for the failure of 1914 and finally capture Paris. And they almost succeeded! It could do this by removing troops from Russia after the Communist Revolution to attack the allies before the USA could transfer enough troops to make a significant shift in the balance of military power. The British bore the brunt of the attack firstly over the territory won in the battles of the Somme and Passchendaele. Many of our soldiers were young conscripts with minimal training – 19 Tewkesburians were

killed with many more wounded or taken prisoner. The preliminary ‘Hurricane Barrage’ of shells and bombs killed 7,500 and then followed new mobile Germans tactics, bi-passing and then surrounding defensive points using Storm Troopers. The British were compelled into a fighting retreat both sides killing 40,000 and losing huge swathes of painfully gained land. Yet the Germans did not succeed in their strategic aims and so mounted four other attacks across the whole front south of Ypres. On 6 June 1918 the attacks petered out – mainly because the enemy had run out of supplies and veteran soldiers due to the stranglehold of the British Naval Blockade. There was no German victory – what on earth could happen next? (The answer will follow in August – isn’t it a long time if you are suffering the ordeal of our grandfathers.)

Isla has now had a confirmed operation date for her Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, which she will be having on 29th June 2018, at Nottingham Hospital. Isla’s father, Jason Haffield, said: “As a family we have been totally devastated by Isla’s diagnosis and vowed to do everything we could to give her the best life possible. “Tewkesbury, as a community, has helped us to raise over £30,000 which has enabled Isla to have over a years’ worth of private intensive physiotherapy. “Isla is now strong enough to undergo a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operationn. “She will be having this operation at Nottingham, privately funded through all the amazing donations that the people of Tewkesbury have given, - at a cost of several thousand pounds. “We are now fundraising for continuing therapy to enable Isla to get the best from the operation and her

What’s beneath the Vineyards Car Park?

They may be expensive but I always find car parks fascinating historically – because of what lies under them, writes John Dixon.

My attention was drawn towards the Vineyards Car Park, when our local photograph collector, Rosemary, sent me this photograph which she thought was dated about 1955. There is a cricket club sight screen, the distinctive houses built in Howells Road about 1938 - and what looks like a lawn tennis hardcourt with some waste ground to the fore. Is this part of today’s “Vineyards Car Park?” The photograph set me studying the history of lawn tennis in the Town. Before WWI, you had to be fortunate enough to own sufficient land for a private court.

FOODBANK THANKS LOCAL SUPPORTERS Tewkesbury Foodbank has thanked several local businesses for their generosity in helping to make Christmas and New Year better for those in need. Project manager Jack Lowe said: “We would like to say a huge thank you of the workers at Lakes bathrooms, who gave up their own Christmas hampers and donated the money to Tewkesbury Foodbank. Their generosity means that we can now run a small scheme helping clients who may be facing a fuel crisis.” Local company Freeman Technology has extended their support for a further year after the current agreement ends in April, and Tewkesbury Charity Bookworm donated money to provide meat vouchers, which were accepted by Barton Street butcher Kevin Mace. The foodbank has also been able to give at fresh food supplied through Fareshare from Tewkesbury and Aldi. A December collection was also held at Tesco, and fundraising events took place at Tewkesbury Abbey too. Gardening groups had to put in a successful bid to be part of the pilot filming project, and programme director, Helen White, chose Tewkesbury as she was impressed with the resilience of our local community following the 2007 floods and thought viewers would appreciate how the gardeners at Victoria Gardens still continue to cope with the challenging conditions when sections of the park disappear under flood water. Spokesperson Shelby Powell says “We have just heard that BBC bosses are so impressed with the pilot series that they have already given

the green light for a second series to be film even before the show is aired. We knew it would be successful as viewers will see real people coming together to make small changes in their own communities for the better”.

Teenage Cancer Trust receives bumper donation thanks to Firmfix customers On 8th February, Phil Grimmett, Firmfix MD, presented a cheque for £1,000 to Charlotte Porter, Regional Fundraiser South West for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Firmfix has a longstanding relationship with this fantastic charity. Over five years ago, the Accounts Manager’s son and owners’ nephew, Mikey Grimmett, was tragically diagnosed with leukemia. It was a huge blow to everyone at the family-run firm. Mikey’s family wholeheartedly agree that his treatment was made so much easier by the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. When Mikey’s uncle, Chairman of Firmfix, Alan Grimmett, first visited the hospital, he decided that the company would make a £100 monthly donation to the ward which has raised over £3,000 to date.

Mikey with his driving test certificate Mikey’s mum, Tracey, adds: ‘I can’t bear to think what the ordeal would have been like if it weren’t for the Teenage Cancer Trust and the set-up they have on the ward in Birmingham. They have gaming stations, TVs, and pool tables. They can even have takeaways delivered any time and all to make life

Mikey has now been in remission for 18 months and is loving life having recently turned 18, passed his driving test and aced his exams at school… we’re so very proud of him!’ At Christmas last year, the owners agreed to donate a percentage of all December sales to the Teenage Cancer Trust. A special mailshot was sent to all existing Firmfix customers with information about the fundraiser and Phil Grimmett was delighted to present the charity with the £1,000 cheque this week! For many years the reserve was used as a sand and gravel quarry.

To some the museum is the collection, the items from the roman pottery to the fairground model, to others it’s the building, the magnificent 17th century house but what really makes the museum is its volunteers.

These are the people who catalogue the collection, mount the displays, clean and dust the items (very gently), do the essential administrative and financial duties, but above all meet our visitors.

When someone visits the museum we want to be able to welcome them individually, ask them where they are from, have they been before. Get to know who is coming to see the museum, how they found us. If they have children, we tell them about the very popular mouse hunt. We hope to answer any questions they have about the building, the collection or Tewkesbury generally. And, in exchange, encourage them to make a donation, buy books and other souvenirs. And volunteers get to meet some interesting people. The last Saturday we had visitors from near and far, New York and Nottingham, Gloucester and Mitton.

One lady brought her daughter to see the fairground because she had loved it as a child. There was also a group of people from Radstock, near Bath, who were volunteers at the museum there. So what really makes a visit to Tewkesbury museum, are the Stewards, the greeters. If

Vintage Car – Café Star Undoubted star of a recent Repair Café was a model of an Alfa Romeo P2 racing car. The model, similar to the one pictured, is believed to date from about 1925 and made by the French firm, CJI. It is formed from tinplate and powered by a clockwork motor. An intricate part of the car's steering mechanism was broken but, after much thought, Repair Café’s Tahir was able to repair this. The owner wishes to remain anonymous, but his wife told us that the car had been in the family for many years and has great sentimental value: “We went to the previous cafe to see if the folk involved were skilled. One meeting with Tahir and team and experiencing their handling in repairing a digital radio convinced him they were up to the job on his precious car which they most certainly were. He is tickled pink. Probably better not to name him - let the publicity go to the volunteers” Not every repair is as

Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service and their guests much enjoyed a most interesting talk and presentation on South Georgia given by Ken Whittaker. With his tremendous knowledge of the South Georgia waters, as Ken has spent almost a decade as Master of the fishery patrol vessel Pharos SG in that area, he was able to tell the Unit many tales of projects he was involved in. These ranged from undertaking many nautical miles of fishery patrol to taking scientists to and from the island. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We must thank Ken for giving us a wonderful insight into life on and around South Georgia both past and present and for his splendid pictures of the abundant wildlife in the area such as penguins, seals and whales.” The whole evening was rounded off with supper.

MITTON W.I. February’s meeting was a very interesting talk on Guide Dogs For The Blind. Julie and Emma, who are both dedicated to the organisation, explained how dog training starts and progresses until each dog is ready for work. Julie is a stand in ‘mid-wife’ for many litters of pups who are then sent to walkers for the first year of training. Emma then takes the puppies until they are approximately 12 months old helping them to acclimatise to everyday sights and sounds. Not all will make the grade, but Julie and Emma explained that many of these dogs will then be adopted for other work. Some may become hearing dogs, some helping with mobility, others helping with therapy in hospitals and schools. Some may be adopted overseas for similar tasks. Our next meeting will be on Monday 5th March at 7.30pm at Mitton Manor School - new members very welcome. We will be learning to belly dance! The Great Twyning Village, Easter Bonnet Parade Easter is early this year, and will herald the start of the season, where communities can shake off the Winter Blues, and start enjoying the warmer days of Spring. Kicking off the new season is the Easter Bonnet Parade in Twyning, on Saturday 24th March. The day will include a walk at 3.30pm around the Village Green, for children and families, dressed with their seasonal hats and attire, accompanied with fun and merriment from the Twyning music truck. Prizes will be given to the best hats worn by

adults as well as a prize for the best child. A Tea Party, based on a Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory theme will then take place in the skittle alley of the Village Inn, where it is hoped that children will enjoy the fun packed event. Although we think they were war workers whose labours helped win the war, most would be deemed too young or without sufficient property. Thanks Derek Round, from whose archive this photograph comes - we salute your grandmother - the lady in the black skirt because she had also lost her husband at the Battle of Arras in 1917 - John Dixon VOTES FOR WOMEN: in 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave women over 30 (around 6 million) who were householders the right to vote. Women who were married to householders, graduates of British Universities or tenants of homes which had an annual rent of £5 or more were also given the vote. But at the same time, all men over 21 were granted voting rights, so the end of the first world war did not bring women equality. It was another ten years (1928) before women 21 and over were given the vote - Editor

Being something of a perfectionist, he decided that, whilst the images, from original 1960s colour slides were wonderful, there were too many gaps in the coverage to put them in to a book straight away, so consequently Neil began looking for further images to fill the ‘holes’. Some of these were filled quite soon but, along the way, colour images of the railway lines in other parts of the county also began to be accumulated, with the result that Neil quickly expanded the project out from the Forest of Dean to encompass the whole of Gloucestershire. So began what currently stands as a twenty-year mission that has at least

another decade to run, to depict the railways of Gloucestershire as they used to be but all in colour. The aim is to show what has been lost in terms of railway infra-

structure – stations, signal boxes, goods yards and engine sheds – as much as the trains themselves. And these are all genuine colour pictures, not images coloured on computer which is in

Neil spent much of his early childhood in the ten years from 1958 to 1968 on a farm near Elmley Castle, so knew the line at Hinton and Ashton-under-Hill quite well. What you are going to need A dust and web remover, a bucket, a sponge, a squeegee, white vinegar or window cleaner, waste paper, fibre cloth or a chamois and a drying cloth. Get rid of excess dust Take down curtains and blinds. Dust corners and get rid of loose dust. A SPRING SELECTION This month we have a selection of objects found locally, and described by metal detectorist, Stuart Borley. Some readers may be able to add to the history and descriptions and Stuart would be delighted to receive any information that adds to the provenance of the finds. This next item, is known as a Jetton, and were used as tokens, or coin like medals, produced across Europe,from the 13th through to the 17th Centuries.

The next item is a matrix seal, probably dating from the 1700’s, often bearing a family crest or icon, in relief. Its use was to leave an impression over the edge of a folded letter or envelope, in hot sealing wax, so that the recipient could tell if the letter had been opened or tampered with. Broadway Railway Station, the Remarkable Reconstruction After fifty eight years and twenty two days, Broadway Station is set to reopen to passengers again on Friday 30th March. The original Edwardian station was built in 1904, on the Great Western Railway main line that linked Birmingham with the South West and carried holiday express trains that included the famous named train, The Cornishman. After closing on the 7th March 1960, the buildings and platforms were demolished and in 1976 the railway closed completely and the tracks were lifted. In 1980, the newly formed Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway started to rebuild the line as a tourist railway, and ran steam-hauled trains over a line that

gradually expanded as funds, materials and volunteers allowed. It was decided to rebuild Broadway Station as near as possible to its former Edwardian counterpart, and today visitors will be able to admire one of the nation's finest reproduction buildings. The new building has been built on the previously buried foundations of the original and has been meticulously rebuilt following original architectural details, by a team of talented volunteers. Built in red and blue brick, the new building has a vaulted iron canopy that has been constructed using the hot riveting process that was used in construction from the industrial revolution to the 1940s. This is a remarkable feat as the iron work was made by a few volunteers at Toddington and later on site at Broadway, as opposed to sub-contracting the work to a large steel construction company. Lamp posts have been recast from Edwardian originals and wrought iron fencing of the time have been remanufactured to recreate a space where visitors can enjoy themselves in a period atmosphere. Broadway village centre is home some beautiful and interesting shops, cafes and businesses and is very much on the tourist route for many visitors from around the world. Often missed by motorists, it is hoped that passengers travelling on the GWR will enjoy the delights of this new rail destination.

TEWKESBURY ROTARY CLUB with Andrew Turner Tewkesbury Rotary Club is back in full swing after the Christmas activities have been put to bed. Santa’s sleigh is safely tucked away thanks to our friends at RED but there are plans already in hand to work on it to make sure that it is ready for the next outings in December.

The club meets weekly at the Corse Lawn House Hotel and enjoy talks from visiting speakers on a wide range of topics. In January and early February we have learnt about the exciting plans for the Town Band from Nigel Morgan and we all look forward to seeing them in the new practice rooms behind the Watson Hall. We have also had a most thought provoking talk about the 21st Century Child by Charlotte Black of Chance Street School.

On the lighter side club members enjoyed a leisurely evening at the Bowls Club playing skittles with a fish and chip supper. There is a an annual winter skittles competition between Rotary clubs in our district and this is always a great opportunity to meet other Rotarians and hopefully progress to the final stages to win the District Trophy – and achievement that we have yet to realise. The annual party for Senior Citizens in Tewkesbury at the Watson Hall took place last week and a full report plus photos will be available next month. On March 17th the annual Charity Concert in the Abbey will once again feature the

dog, and being so small, is suited to almost all types of living environments.

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog, and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only Pet Supplies. There are two theories regarding the origin of the Chihuahua. The first is that the dog was a product of cross breeding between small Chinese hairless dogs, brought to Mexico by Spanish traders, and local small native dogs. The second and more interesting theory, is that they were descendants from a Central American dog known as the Techichi. This was a companion dog favoured by the Toltec civilization of Mexico. There are Toltec carvings dating back to the 9th century that resemble a Chihuahua, with the same large ears and rounded head. When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs, they

absorbed the Techichi into their society. They believed the Techichi had mystical powers and

many of these small dogs lived in their temples and were used in Aztec rituals. It was customary to kill a red Techichi, and cremate it with the remains of the deceased to help guide the soul to the underworld. The Techichi dog was also bred as a source of food and for their pelts. They were used as live ‘hot water bottles’

for the sick and injured. Some historians believe this practice is where the idea of pain being transferred for humans to animals originated. The Chihuahua as we know it today was discovered in Mexico in 1850. American visitors brought the little dogs back home with them. There are two types of Chihuahua, the Smooth coat and the Long coat. The UK Kennel Club considers these as two separate breeds. Progeny between the two are not eligible for KC registration. The long haired variety was probably created through crosses with Papillons and or Pomeranians. Their popularity has

grown steadily and now they are ranked 11th out of the 155 breeds and varieties the AKC recognises. The apple head and the deer head Chihuahuas, are two unofficial categorisations worth mentioning. The deer head has a straight, elongated muzzle, and looks like a deer without antlers. It is generally bigger, which can result in disqualification from dog shows, since the size standard is 6 lbs or less. The apple head, however, has a well rounded head with bulging eyes. In fact, this is the only breed of dog that is born with an incomplete skull, this is not a defect, but helps with the growth

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years

this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it saw to be bitter failure, the cracked pot spoke to the woman one

Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.” The point to remember here? Each of us has our own unique flaws... But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.
