At the beginning of last year, the Twyning Village Community Charity Committee (which consists of a band of locals) got together with the aim of raising funds via several annual village events. This carried on a tradition started several years ago, and helped to enhance community spirit whilst participants had fun in the process. The committee held two race nights and an all-day cricket event during the year raising approximately £4,000,

which was chiefly donated to their appointed charities for the year. These were CLIC Sargent, Sue Ryder and Cancer Research UK. The remaining funds acting as a local community pot for deserving needs, and a start for 2014. "We had a great turnout on the presentation night, which was attended by all the wonder-ful companies and individuals who have supported these worthy causes throughout the year, and long may it continue!" said commit-

Fight to save Battlefield The Tewkesbury Battlefield Society and their supporters need to raise £10,000 to fund their fight to save the historic Gastons Fields from being sold - possibly for speculative development. A check on the latest census, (held in 2011) showed that the population of Tewkesbury was just over 10,000. As a result of this discovery the group is now asking as many people as possible to give a pound to their fund. Large sweet jars, kindly donated by Sweets & Treats, have been left as collecting boxes at One Stop, Images Hairdressers at the Cross,1471 Deli, The Royal Hop Pole, Sweets and Treats, M&Co, Uncle Sam’s Fish and Chip shop, the Tewkesbury Wholefood Shop, and Tewkesbury Cards &

enough to run the campaign'. "The idea just stuck in my mind, so I decided to act on it." The Gastons, an ancient pasture between Gloucester Road and Lincoln Green Lane, is the lst remaining untouched part of the site of the Battle of Tewkesbury and would have been at the heart of the fighting. It still has a clearly visible ridge and furrow pattern and parts of the hedges surrounding it have been dated back to the 15th century. Its is included in the English Heritage register of protected battle fields and a feature of the town's Battlefield Trail. It belongs to The Governors of Tewkesbury School, who hold it in trust for the school. It has now been registered as a Community asset, which puts a moratorium on the sale for six months. If they are successful the field will be returned to its former good state, by the use of controlled grazing, a semi derelict animal shelter on th site will be sympathetically restored and used as an interpretation point for the battle site. Access will still be available to local people for walking.

MARK INDUCTED INTO MMA HALL OF FAME In an earlier edition of Tewkesbury Direct, we reported on the success of Clive Harrison, 8th degree Black belt and Taekwondo instructor in a national awards ceremony, writes Shelby Powell. This month we turn to the world of mixed martial arts. In the annual awards ceremony run by Martial Arts Illustrated, UK’s bestselling martial arts magazine, Tewkesbury gym owner and referee, Mark Woodard, has been recognised as the “best MMA Referee”. The annual Hall of

Fame Awards are presented to martial artists from all styles of Martial Arts and include some of the top names and legends in the Martial Arts world. Mark has over forty years of experience in the mixed martial arts field with a background in kickboxing, Muay Thai, Ju-jitsu, Karate and Judo as well as boxing and catch wrestling. Added to his impressive mixed martial arts CV, Mark is an experienced coach and a world renowned referee in contact sports. “I started officiating after doing a course on judging and refereeing”, says Mark. “The idea was that I understood the rules a little better from a judges and ref’s point of view to help train my students. “I suppose my big chance came when I was asked to ref a big show in London because the original ref had an accident.” Mark has never looked back, refereeing at all levels from local grass roots competitions to huge televised promotions like the UFC and BAMMA. FESTIVAL BENEFITS FROM SHARING HERITAGE FUND This year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival will be better than ever for a lucky group of local children, thanks to a ‘Sharing Heritage’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The £9,600 grant will fund a Schools’ Day on the Friday 11th July, the day before the main festival starts. ‘Sharing Heritage’ is a funding programme introduced to help people across the UK to explore, conserve and share all aspects of the history and character of their local area. Around 500 children, aged 9 to 11, from local primary schools in Tewkesbury and the surrounding villages will be invited to take part in the Schools’ Day. Whilst learning about the heritage and history of Tewkesbury, particularly its Medieval History, they will take part in activities such as squire training, archery, jester school and medieval music workshops. They will meet birds of prey, a barber surgeon with bloodthirsty tales of historical medicine and have an audience with King Edward IV and Queen Margaret of Anjou. The highlight of the day will be their own reenactment of the 1471 battle of Tewkesbury,

against experienced reenactors, but with safety very much in mind. All the re-useable resources purchased with the grant money for the event, will be kept for use in future years.

2013’s festival Geraldine Liddy- festival treasurer - said: “We are really excited about this opportunity to share our combined knowledge and enthusiasm for Tewkesbury's Heritage with local children". Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is the largest event of its kind in Europe and takes place on part of the site of the actual battle of 1471. This year's event will be on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival has been the high spot of Tewkesbury’s summer since 1984. It is now widely regarded as the largest free medieval gathering of its kind in Europe, and attracts reenactors, traders and entertainers, and visitors from all over the world. Its central attraction is a re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, on part of the site of the original 1471 battlefield. Many of the participants including wives and children live as a medieval army in authentic medieval encampments for the whole weekend. Sharing Heritage is for any not-for-profit group wanting to explore their community’s heritage. Projects can cover a wide spectrum of subject matter from exploring local archaeology to managing and training volunteers, and holding festivals and events to commemorate the past.

The council, which has run an apprenticeship scheme since 2002, is looking to fill placements in planning, property services, and waste and recycling. The scheme is for school and sixth form leavers, and over the past five years has achieved a 95% success rate of apprentices moving into employment, with just under 60% being recruited internally. Apprenticeships last for one year and lead to a Key Skills Certificate, Business and Administration NVQ Level 2 or 3 and Technical Certificate, which means they leave with nationally recognised qualifications. 1889 as an infant school, divided into 2 rooms with partition but “still over-crowded”. The original School, opened in 1812, is significant because it was the first Non-Conformist ‘British’ School using the Lancaster system pupils as monitors assisting the teacher. The land was donated by the Quaker tanner, and benevolent banker, Nathaniel Hartland It closed in about 1970 with the opening of Mitton Manor School. It has achieved life after death as Elizabeth Wyatt House, named after the indefatigable carer for the aged and POWs from World War II. How naïve to build an infant school across a

busy road! Well, it was by 1935 when desperately needed railings were built. It was, however, less busy in 1889 than in 1812 when mail coaches would have thundered past, en route to London. However, the railways killed that trade and, before cars became prevalent, it was obviously quiet enough to risk the passing of children. One can only hope that if the “Annexe” must be demolished, some enterprising architect will be salivating at the chance to design a house complex in harmony with its Gothic predecessor. M.A.C.A TO HELP PLAYGROUND M.A.C.A. (Mitton Area Community Association) are fund raising to help the Friends of Mitton Playground get the money to refurbish the small playground on Mitton Manor Estate. FSB PROVIDES VOICE FOR BUSINESS ON FLOODS AND INSURANCE The battle to ensure small businesses are kept at the heart of Government policy when dealing with the flood crisis has been taken up by the Tewkesbury branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The FSB – the biggest business representation group in the UK – has been widely consulted by the Government when assessing the impact of the floods and recently its national leaders were summoned to 10, Downing Street, to give an overview of the situation. A call went out to local FSB branches to provide information and case studies and Tewkesbury responded immediately with evidence provided by FSB chairman Sue Lambert and also Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Andy Sanders. Both reports were duly handed over to senior Government officials the same day. One of the main points made by Sue was that despite all the media hype Tewkesbury was still open for business and the danger was the perception of the flooding situation could cause as much damage to business as the water itself. It is a point the FSB has been making very forcefully. A few days after the meeting, helped by the evidence provided by Tewkesbury FSB and others, the Government announced a £10m package to support small businesses who have been affected. HARRY DAVIES TAKES GOLD Tewkesburyâ€™s Harry Davies took the top slot at the Spartan Grappling Challenge held in Bristol this weekend. Davies who trains at Outlaw Martial Arts Gym entered in this prestigious submission grappling competition for experience. Harry won his first fight by arm triangle forcing his opponent to submit inside the time limit. His second match was taken using a triangle again forcing his opponent to submit. This win put him in the final where he won using a leg lock. His coach at Outlaw MMA Gym, Mark Woodard said "This is very impressive to enter a competition like this and win the under 84 kg category first time out." Another member of the Outlaw MMA Gym Ryan Hall also competed in the same competition. Ryan won his 1st match and lost his 2nd to the eventual winner of the division. Moses, the ITV ‘Superstar’ Finalist, plays Jesus and Daniel Haslam takes on the role of Judas. Paul was born into a musical family and raised in Co.Kildare, Ireland. He moved to New York aged 25 and undertook formal training at AADA (The American Academy of Dramatic Arts) as well as becoming a member of the Neighbourhood Play Writers Lab. Paul is a founder member of the award winning local band Roving Crows, who are currently on tour with their second album ‘Deliberate Distractions.’ The album received four star reviews in the Financial Times and R2 music magazine. Why do Tewkesbury’s floods take so long to drain? Trying to answer this question we visited the course of the River Severn during the flood looking at areas where the inundation occurs and where it disappears. Flood waters flank the river to the south of Gloucester and then there are occasional flooded fields and waterways further down. Reaching Newnham on Severn at low tide, it was clear that shoals, beaches and sandbanks were exposed. This indicates a much lower water level in the river at this point. However just a few miles back up stream at Minsterworth, it was clear that the river was struggling to cope with the flow. It seems as if the river is too shallow at this point to carry away seasonal floods. The subject of river dredging, has been receiving more attention as a result of the Somerset floods. Perhaps the Severn needs similar treatment. There are those that claim it would make no difference but it is clear

the waters have the potential to drain into the tidal reaches, if the river immediately south of Gloucester was deeper. We apologise about the grainy quality of the photographs, they were taken on maximum telephoto from the top of Newnham Hill.

The coin that was made twice

This month we feature a five shilling piece dated 1804 that Stuart found recently. This is an interesting find in more ways than one as the coin was struck by the Soho Mint in Birmingham between 1804 and 1811,

although all the coins minted bear the date 1804. The other anomaly is that the coin was originally a Spanish American eight realy coin but was overstruck (remade into the five shilling coin) because of

This the third occasion that the owner Nasir Uddin and his staff have opened on a Sunday lunchtime for the charity Members of the Tewkesbury group of Save the Children were very grateful for this opportunity and for the continued support shown from the people of Tewkesbury and from the surrounding areas who attend their various fundraising events. It was a very happy successful event raising £480. For every £1 raised, 89 pence goes straight to be used in the most deserving areas, both in the UK and 120 other countries where Save the Children provide help. The remaining 11 pence goes to providing resources and support to enable more fund raising. peoples livelihoods have been affected there have also been many stories of good will and communities coming together to help others who are elderly or vulnerable. However there have also been some problems caused by what can only be called selfish behaviour. It has been necessary to close numerous roads over the last week which has caused major disruption there are two main reasons for this, public safety and damage to property.

The first reason is fairly obvious where the flood water is so deep the road is completely impassable, however we have had numerous instances where motorists have ignored road closures no doubt as they drive 4 x4 vehicles and believe they can get through. The actions of this small minority who ignore these signs have caused damage to property as the "bow wave" they cause can breach the sand bag defences and send water into homes. I hope we have seen the last of the flood water but if we have further problems this Spring please do not be tempted to ignore the signs, any infringements will be dealt with robustly.

Driving through Flood Water A few tips for driving through flood water if your journey is absolutely necessary. Know how deep the water is, always stop before you drive into flood water and assess the depth. If the water is deeper than the bottom of your doors then turn around and find an alternative route. If you can see an abandoned vehicle up to

As for off-street parking, if we do obtain a Genuine Parking Review, I dream that the system be changed to payment on leaving with the first half hour free. That would encourage shoppers to make a rational decision on how long they spend in the shops without the fear that too much time would incur a penalty payment. You breathe in your exhaled carbon dioxide and that can quickly balance the gasses in your blood and ease the symptoms. As an alternative you can hold your breath for the count of 10 and then take slow and deep breaths right down into your tummy and not just your chest. Divert the focus off the symptoms. Dont say “Relax” or “Stop Panicking” but rather think about what is on TV or what you are going to have for your meal. Anything other than the panic itself. Remind yourself that nobody has ever died from a Panic Attack. They are uncomfortable but that is as far as it goes. Focus your attention on something outside your own body and symptom feelings. Easy to count backwards ion 3s from 100 or go through the words of a favourite song or poem or just concentrate and what there is to see around you in as much detail as possible. Chat with anyone by you but NOT about how you feel. Trying to run away and leave the situation causing the problem will only help to reinforce the face that your panic attacks are unbearable. Stay put where you are, If you can sit for a moment that’s fine. Just allow the symptoms to pass and you will gain confidence in your ability to cope. The more you do this and the more you do not allow the panics to take over your lives the more you will notice just how strong you are and how the power of the panics dissolve to the extent that they can totally disappear. The more you believe this the easier it is to achieve. Remember YOU have the CHOICE. Take control or be controlled! A ‘no brainer’ when you think about it! This sounds to good to be true? NOT AT ALL. One patient sent me a Christmas card on which she wrote “ Thank you for giving me back my life.” She had discovered that Panics need not hold her back any more and was celebrating her success. You can do the same!

Please remember that if you drive too fast through water and soak pedestrians or cyclists, you could be prosecuted for driving without reasonable consideration to other road users. This can result in fine and penalty points on your licence.

Crime Trends Unfortunately the problem we had at the end of last year with catalytic converter thefts has started up again. Vans and 4x4's with their higher ground clearance are better in the floods but unfortunately they are also easier to crawl under which make them

more vulnerable to this kind of theft. Park your vehicle in a well lit area or if it is parked on you drive fit a security light. You can also purchase an anti theft device called a "Catloc" these are not cheap but perhaps something to be considered when your exhaust system is due for replacement.
