Set to return to Eastnor Deer Park, near Ledbury, from August 8th–11th, the Lakefest line-up is delivering its best yet. The story line covers all of Hick's life from impoverished childhood and a hard home life through her adolescence to eventually achieving an education and creating a career as a successful journalist, which provided her with an introduction to the Presidential household.

They established a special friendship and over the years whilst this was tested by the pressures of the White House we see glimpses within the Administration and of FDR himself, during his time as the only US President to serve three terms.

Bloom's novel must depend a lot on the vast correspondence these two ladies exchanged over 3,000 letters, yet she writes a readable tale and anyone who has read her earlier novels "Away" and "Lucky us" should enjoy this unusual book.

The accuracy of their biographical data brings this story alive, and produces an interesting angle to this period of U.S. history over the depression and then into WW2.

THERE’S A NEW GUITAR IN TOWN! Actually, there’s more than one new guitar in town - there’s lots of them! And they can all be found upstairs at the Malt House Emporium, Ashchurch; in a brand-new guitar shop called ‘Strummers’. We asked owner Paul Thomas about the venture: Q: Why Tewkesbury and why a guitar shop? A: I’d been toying with the idea of opening my own guitar shop for a while and it was my wife, Rachel, who suggested the Malt House, Tewkesbury. She’d been visiting the place since it opened although I must admit I’d never been myself.

was really encouraging. So that’s how Tewkesbury came about and I’m really glad to be here! Q: How long have you been interested in guitars? A: Ever since I was a toddler really. My uncles all had guitars and, luckily, they were happy for me to play with them. I loved twanging the strings and dropping the plectrum through the sound hole! When I was about seven, after a lot of begging, my dad bought me my first guitar and I’ve been playing ever since. Continued on Page 6

A rare panoramic viewpoint One of the ‘eyecatchers’ built outside the historic Croome Park will be open to the public for a limited time this Spring. The Grade 1 listed Panorama Tower, designed by James Wyatt in 1801, will be open on Saturday 23rd March (11am-2pm) and Wednesday 17th April (11am3pm) for visitors to take in spectacular views. The tower’s design was based on and earlier one by Robert Adam, and it was built from Bath stone. Inside a spiral staircase leads to the 360 degree viewing platform, from where visitors can see part of 'Capability' Brown Croome Park, Worcester Cathedral and the Malverns - weather permitting.Funding from The Rowlands Trust and Natural England enabled Croome to acquire and restore the Panorama Tower. WILLIS BAKERY VANS: AN UPDATE

This is a tale of aristocratic rivalry from the time before 1868 when Tewkesbury had TWO MPs, writes John Dixon.

Following the publication of ‘Then and Now’ in February’s Tewkesbury Direct, John Dixon received this message from Jo Freeman, of Tewkesbury. Hello John, Just to put it right about Willis’ van, I agree that my Great Uncle Reg Brick is sitting on the trailer, but there is no way that he was the driver of the van. He repaired shoes in one of the shops in Sun Street about two up from where his father, William Brick (my Great Grandfather), had his shop on the corner of Sun Street. William Brick was there before Preston. I know Great Uncle Reg was there in 1947 because I used to go and see him sometimes after school. I was at the Church of England School in Oldbury Road where George Robinson (Boss Rob) was Headmaster. Regards, Jo Freeman. In the days before MPs were paid, it was worth their while to canvass for votes by presenting the Town with a substantial gift – in this case, gates for the Abbey. The Dowdeswell dynasty regarded itself as almost hereditary MPs for Tewkesbury from 1660 to 1868 (after which we had only one MP). Lord Gage (an Irish peer, entitled to sit in the Commons) was something of an interloper. With financial interests in the Forest of Dean, he was elected one of our MPs from 1721 until his death in 1754. It seems the Abbey in 1750 was focus of their rival generosity when Dowdeswell’s Gates were placed “next the street, the wall and the pallisadoes”. (In 1750 there was no A38 and the road to Gloucester turned down Mill Street and continued through the modern Victoria Pleasure Gardens.) Gage’s gates “handsome” according to historian Dyde in 1790 were relegated to the porch entrance into the church. Thus they remained until the major restoration of the Abbey which took place in 1879. Initially no change was proposed but in September it was announced that “the splendid pair of iron gates at the entrance to the North Porch have been removed to the position of the entrance Gates”. The Dowdeswells could only repossess their unwanted gates and return then to the family seat in Bushley to be forgotten for over a century until the recent intervention of Bredon School. The Gage Gates have now been elevated to iconic status and have been lovingly restored in the following years. The donors and their rivalry have now been forgotten but modern Tewkesbury has surely been the beneficiary.

Flexibility vs Stability The body is always balancing flexibility with stability. For example, the hip and shoulder joint are very similar, both being ball and socket joints. However, the hip is weight bearing and so needs to be very stable. This is created by having a deep socket joint for the ball to sit in and large strong muscles holding it in place. The shoulder joint in contrast needs to be mobile for us to use the arms for different tasks and so the socket for the ball is much flatter and the musculature is made up of more, but smaller muscles than in the hip. When joints are working correctly as you need them to for your job or hobbies, you should find that where you need to be strong and stable the joints wonâ€™t have as much movement as other joints. This can become

asymmetrical as most of us have a natural dominant side. Cyclists can often suffer from mid back and shoulder girdle pain where the body stabilises the spine and base of the neck in order to get a strong position on a bike. However, when you then go out on a walk the body needs more movement in the spine and shoulder girdle. Golfers encourage their spine to be mobile in a rotational movement in the lower back. This is not a movement this part of the back is very good at and so muscle strengthening is

Katie Hogg needed to aid this movement. In short, the body is excellent at adapting to what we need and pain is always the end result of adaptations not working. STOKED UP FOR SPRING Following essential track and general maintenance during January and February, volunteers at the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway are gearing up for their new season, as services resume on Saturday 9th March. Trains will run every weekend until November thereafter. The restored railway line stretches for fourteen miles from Cheltenham racecourse, running through the Cotswolds to Broadway. The extension from Laverton to Broadway re-opened last year, bringing trains back to the popular tourist destination for the first time in nearly sixty years. The number of passengers soared in 2018, and this year more facilities have been added, including a tea room at Broadway station. A ‘Cotswolds Express’ service has been introduced, which stops at two principal stations en route - Winchcombe and Toddington.

Lots of special events are planned throughout the year, starting with the ‘Easter Eggspress’

fun day on Monday 22nd April, followed by the ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds;’ weekend

are in place) begins at the Village Hall. Leave the car park and turn right, past the church, to go along the main street. As you reach the edge of the village look out for some barn conversions on your left. At Hither Ham House go over the stile by the brick built gate post and past some tennis courts to a five bar gate. Go through, and bear right to cross a stile (1). Walk down the slope, following the direction of the yellow marker arrows, to another stile and over a stream (2). Go diagonally right across the field to the far corner (3) and into the next field keeping the boundary to your right. At the end of this field go through into another field (4) and head towards the house that stands beside Mythe Bridge. Passing the back of the house, pick up the Severn Way (5) to reach the river bank. Turn left and walk along the bank, keeping the Severn to your right at all times. On the eastern bank

of the Severn, sand and gravel extraction took place for many years on this stretch between Tewkesbury and Upton. Nowadays pleasure craft have largely replaced the working barges The wind pump the towpath passes was used for raising water to the meadows between here and Bushley. DISTANCE: approx 2.25 miles, mainly flat. CAR PARKING: in the small car park at Bushley village hall, next to the church. REFRESHMENTS: there is no shop or pub in Bushley; nearest facilities are in Tewkesbury. FLOODING: check local weather forecasts before setting off. The walk should NOT be attempted when flood warnings are in place. Can be muddy. NOT TO SCALE: OS sheet 190 (Malvern Hills and Bredon) is recommended

A new refreshment room for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway When the GWSR extended its running line to a brand new station at Broadway last year, it proved to be an instant hit with customers. To cater for lots of hungry and thirsty customers it was decided to provide a refreshment room in the recreated, Edwardian style, station building. Over the winter, a period themed refreshment room has been created, which is due to open when services restart in March. Visitors will be able to use the brand new car park that has been created near the station and travel by heritage trains to Toddington, Hayles Abbey, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse stations.

Credit, where credit is due A fabulous make over on one of the pine trees outside the Northway Pub has been carried out by the parks and grounds department of Tewkesbury Borough Council. The tree is one of several that remain from the days when the Northway Pub was a manor house and the trees were part of the formal gardens. Since then, Northway Lane has been routed through the grounds and the shopping precinct, housing and car parks now occupy much of the former grounds. Over the years, the remaining pine trees

have been overwhelmed by ivy creepers, obscuring their classical shapes, but the recent remedial action by the council has restored the looks of one of these lovely trees. How nice it would be if all the trees could be tidied up and areas of overgrowth removed and residents, could once again, enjoy the environs of a once great garden.

ROTARY CHARITY CONCERT Tewkesbury Rotary Club and Gloucestershire Music Service are holding a concert at Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 23rd March with over 120 young musicians and singers taking part. This is the 14th annual Charity concert featuring Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra organised by the Rotary Club and this year the proceeds will be donated to the Sue Ryder Hospice in Leckhampton. Previous concerts have supported local and international charities including Youth at Heart,

Fruit Tree in Your Garden? Fruit trees are one of the staples of our rural landscape. We have an abundance of large-scale growers in this area who grow apples, pears, plums and more. But, beyond that, many gardens are lucky enough to have a fruit tree in them, providing an annual bounty. Often these garden trees become neglected. We have no time, or perhaps no idea, how to deal with them. They get to the point where they are unruly, too large for the garden, too copious in their amount of fruit or generally unmanageable. Fruit trees are very specific. They need to be pruned within a certain window and in a certain way. Whereas gardeners and tree surgeons can offer to cut these trees, they lack the knowledge of fruit production required to maintain a

healthy tree which bears fruit. Fruit trees should be pruned every year. Proper pruning of fruit trees has numerous benefits. Firstly, it improves the overall health of the tree by removing old and diseased wood. Secondly, it can affect yield, leading to better sized fruit. Thirdly, it promotes new growth to improve the lifespan of the tree. Whereas commercial growers prune their orchards for consistency and volume, garden fruit trees need more love and attention. They need to meet the dual requirement of fruit alongside aesthetics. In short, garden fruit trees must fit in with the layout and functionality of the garden, but also be considered for their fruit production. THE PAGEANT OF 1931 The Museum has several good copies of the programme for the 1931 Pageant, the souvenir booklet published by the ‘Register’ and newspaper cuttings but very little else. Until recently, that is, when we were very generously given a family photograph album of the event. The album belonged to Miss Muriel Crouch of 35 High Street. The family were well known as bakers and their confectionary bakery still stands in Walls Court, though no longer baking. The Pageant was staged to raise money to build the new hospital in Barton Road (now demolished). Vincent Yorke, President of the Hospital, took charge. Gwen Lally, who was an experienced pageant director was engaged to arrange it. She recruited 2,000 performers, including all the gentry of the Seven Vale. She chose the meadow between the Abbey and the Vineyards as her stage, with the Abbey as the backdrop. It’s known to this day as Pageant Meadow. The event opened with a flourish of trumpets, followed by the singing of a choir of artdeco golden-robed angels from the Abbey Tower. Muriel Crouch was one of that choir and the album has photographs of some of the

choir members including ‘baby’ angels. The commonly-seen photographs are of the Countess of Plymouth and Lady Cynthia Asquith, who took the roles of Archangels. There were seven episodes, each representing a historic event in Tewkesbury’s history (except the last episode, which was Mr Pickwick’s visit to the Hop Pole). It started with a prologue and ended with a grand finale involving all the players. The event was mime, with a narrator and orchestral accompaniment. The album contains pictures from the souvenir booklet and the newspapers as well as postcards, but by far the most interesting are the photographs, which are of friends and family who seem to have almost all been angels. The costumes are imaginative and not at all ‘rustic’. It must have taken Gwen Lally’s considerable powers of persuasion to dress Tewkesbury in Art Deco style!

MITTON W.I. Our February meeting was an extremely enjoyable talk about Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world gaining that status in 1872. Did you know that the park actually sits on a giant culdero (volcano) measuring 46 miles across and erupts approximately every 600,000 years - it is now 10,000 years overdue so if you wish to visit the park do it soon! Paul Willerton and his wife brought along many beautiful slides of the area and its wildlife and it was good to hear about the area from a tourist point of view rather than an official one. He could advise all the ‘dos and don'ts’ with regards the roads and view points for all us future visitors. Many thanks Paul for a great talk. We also welcomed some new members to our group and hope they enjoyed the evening too. Our next meeting will on March 4th when Esme will be giving a talk about the history of the W.I. and the benefits of Denman College. It is fascinating to see what it is that fascinates people these days and how peoples thoughts and feelings change regarding things over the years, writes David Slater. I am fascinated that the computer that I am using now is far more powerful than the ones that were used in early manned space flights. Computers that used to take up rooms in a building can now fit into your pocket! I am fascinated that a space craft can send a space craft to the very edges of our universe, billions of miles away, and the craft can send us photographs of what it sees out there. But the world has advanced so much over the centuries that I think we could each write a list of what we considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World - and the lists may vary considerably yet be equally valid in their assertions. A group of children were asked to compile their own list of what they considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World. Many lists were very similar. Many included the Great Pyramid. A lot included the Great Wall of China. Many said the International Space Station. One child even said “My Nan!” There was one child in particular who came forward with a totally different list which really took the teacher's breath away. 4.To TASTE 5.To FEEL 6.To LAUGH 7.To LOVE The teacher read the list to the class and you could have heard a pin drop. The child had pulled everyone up short. This child was looking at wonders that we take for granted most of the time. We overlook them as just being simple and ordinary, everyday things in life. Actually what the pupil causes us to do is to look at, to

reassess and appreciate the things which are truly the most precious things in life. Note, too, that not one of them is made by a scientist or a builder. Not one of them can be bought over the counter of a shop. These ARE the real Wonders of the World which makes our lives so precious. DOGS: CHEWING IT OVER We all know that puppies chew, exploring the world with their mouths and soothing the pains of teething, writes Nigel Sligh. Adult dogs chew for various reasons, they could be bored, anxious, have separation anxiety and sometimes they chew because they think it’s fun. Here are a few tips: • Provide mental stimulation when walking your dog with balls or frisbees. • Be inventive with toys, use buffalo horns or antlers. Fill a Kong toy with kibble and add a splash of water to make it swell. Freezing the Kong will make it last even longer. • When you are not at home, put your dog in a ’safe room’ with some tried and tested chew toys. • For teething puppies, freeze a wet dishcloth to help soothe those painful gums. Don’t chase your dog to reclaim your shoe, your dog may run away in fear or think that this is a new game. Rather, quietly trade with a favourite chew toy. Teach your dog to drop a toy. Use a favourite chew toy and give the animal a treat every time it obeys the ‘Drop It’ command. Finally, remember that chewing is natural behaviour. All dogs like to chew, not just puppies.

As an example of the wide range of different speakers and the subjects they cover, Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club played host in recent weeks to two amazing women speakers, both high achievers but in totally different fields. At the end of January Dr. Katy Bellamy (who happens to be the niece of the TV naturalist David Bellamy) gave a talk with the intriguing title of “The Joy of False Memory”. Katy is a cognitive neuroscientist who told us that accurate memory is the exception rather than the rule. Our memories are often coloured by events early in our lives and cultural and societal influences determine what we remember. Quoting from research by Professors Frederic Bartlett and Elizabeth Loftus, she told us that the brain tends to erase memories that are no longer useful and that memory is not immutable but is constantly changing and can often make us believe in something that never happened. Katy discussed “gaslighting” a technique used by people wishing to dominate or abuse others to manipulate them by psychological means into doubting

their own sanity. It is often done slowly, so the victim doesn't realize how much they've been brainwashed. Torture is an example of this which explains how sometimes victims of torture are made to create false memories of events that did not happen. Our second remarkable woman speaker was Celia Hargraves BEM, her subject being the Marathon des Sables or the Sahara Marathon – which isn’t really a 26.2 mile marathon, but a 150 mile run across the Sahara Desert over 6 stages. She described how participants have to carry everything they need in their rucksacks (food, water, sleeping bag, medication, first aid kit and sunscreen) and how participants were obliged to sleep in rough-and-ready shared tents and how any departure from the strict rules about what they were allowed to carry were punished by instant disqualification.

Punishing is a very appropriate word to describe the whole event and at the end of the talk Celia was asked why she does it. She told us of the unforgettable wonder of the night sky in the Sahara with no pollution to interfere with the beauty of the stars, how she had met so many wonderful people and made so many friends with the same interest in overcoming similar challenges. A selection of children from Queen Margaret Primary School have been working on an art project involving local landmarks in Tewkesbury, and their work will be on display at the Roses Theatre Gallery in Sun Street until 17th March 2019. KS1 children (4-7yrs) worked on their artwork with coloured pencils, depicting their impression of what they see. The focus of the activity was to use colour and directional lines in their drawings. KS2 children (711yrs) used chalk pastel on coloured paper focusing on colour and tone in their work. All the children were able to select their image to interpret including the

coloured paper. This type of activity allows children to use their creativity and learn all about their local area at the same time. My thanks to Sara Benyon, Headteacher at queen Margaret Primary School, Tewkesbury for all her support in putting together this project. Camper, John Chard wrote in to tell readers about a fabulous campsite near Tewkesbury that he and his partner, created, voluntarily, from a modest start.

This month Sofia discovers a book she has enjoyed reading. Sofia bought the book, The Magical Faerie Door, by Michelle Louise Gordon at a recent mind, body and soul event, held recently at Tewkesbury Town Hall, and she said “I loved every moment of reading it” and her mum Emma was please they popped into the event and made a great discovery.

“In 2010 my partner and I visited Court Farm as motorhomers for a week. We weren’t impressed. The field was shared with horses. Horses ate everything. Nothing by way of the existing site made us feel comfortable. However though the owners though were warm and helpful. Nowadays I like to feel as if we are friends. “A little bit later, I asked the owners if they would allow me to make some dramatic changes to the camping site. I needed to give the whole field a makeover. The horses departed. I asked for 500 saplings, a few sacks of grass seed and I promised free labour. Oh yes and a cheap ride on mower. I needed a chal-

lenge. I got what I needed. “A few years later, the field resembles nothing of it’s previous life. It’s green grass is split into three separated areas, a number of electrical outlets and refurbished facility block. “I could tell you much much more, but I won’t, because it would sound all about me. “The most important thing we would like to say is this, and that is that without owners, Mr and Mrs Gormans agreement I would never have been given the opportunity to express myself in

Care’s Alley is unique in that it’s still there but no longer used as such. It is closed by doors at each end, and not claimed as a public right of way, so if it ever was an alley it isn’t now. The Alley is named after William Care, baker, and the ‘Front House’ was a Care’s bakers until about 1844. It sold all manner of merchandise after that, even becoming a beer-house, the Foresters Arms, between about 1880 and 1917. It is now Halfords Butchers shop. The alley is still intact and paved with blue bricks. It runs down to Red Lane, to a locked door between the old Healings Mill offices and L&L’s establishment. By the nineteenth century there were no more than five houses occupied in the alley, though there had been more in earlier days. In 1874 four cottages and a ‘former cottage’ were sold at auction. That was the entire alley. Over the years there were the

same time recommended for demolition. This was completed by June 1936. The Alley now has only two, much improved, cottages. There was a high turnover of occupants, which really isn’t surprising given the description of the Alley by John Rogers in 1905: “This is a very old alley and most of the houses are dark and wretched places to live in, but the rents are low and the poor people are very glad to get low-rented cottages because work is scarce and wages low.” Looking at census records, few families stayed for ten years. A lot seemed to be young couples in their first homes. Francis and Ann Chapman, in their seventies, are described as paupers. The Daffurn

usual complaints about the condition of the cottages, and official notices to remedy them until in 1936 three cottages were offered for sale and almost at the

family, in 1861, had seven children. Life must have been very trying in a small, dark cottage. The Walkers stayed the longest. First recorded there in 1881, generations of Walkers lived in the Alley until the middle of the twentieth century. John Walker was a boatman, as many were in the area. He died in 1908, aged 76. The one blot on his character was being fined two shillings for using profane language. His grandson, also John, was a Sergeant in the Worcestershire Regiment and in 1916 was awarded the Croix de Guerre for distinguished service in the field. A month later, his six year old son was out playing, alone, and fell into the Mill Avon and drowned. This wasn’t the only drowning tragedy in the Alley. In 1868 James Holland, another water-

Digital Aerial Installations Upgrades and Repairs man, sent his thirteen year old son James to sleep on a barge, to make more space in the cottage, but he fell unnoticed into the river and was not missed until the following morning. Such accidents were all too common in Tewkesbury. In 1934, there was an evacuation of the cottages when the British Legion building in Quay Street, which backed onto the Alley, caught fire and was gutted. Luckily, there were no injuries and the fire was contained to the one building. In 1892, after a complaint about the state of the Alley, the owners, Tewkesbury Brewery Company, asked the Council to pave it, claiming that they had paved other private alleys. The Surveyor denied this, and refused. Negotiations must have carried on, though, because in 1901 it was paved with blue bricks, the mark of a public right of way. In 1938 a complaint was made that a door had been fixed to the alley and the Town Clerk was instructed to order its removal. By 1949 there were four doors there and the owners were told that they were blocking a right of way and they

were given fourteen days to take them down. This they must have done, because eight years later Mr Hill, who lived in the front house, complained that on dark winter evenings the alley was full of courting couples, who were creating a nuisance. The Council approved fitting a door to the alley, and it has been closed off ever since. The Alley’s neighbour on the north side was Johns’ Brewery. Mr Johns lived in 46 High Street (Now Subway) and the side passage led to the brewery, established there by 1770. After the death of the Thomas Johns, Master Brewer, in 1864 the enterprise was continued under the name of Tewkesbury Original Brewery until 1875, when brewing transferred to Quay Street and the buildings became stores. Several residents of the alley were Brewery Workers and the brewery became owner of all the Care’s Alley cottages. This would have ended in 1890 when the brewery closed and sold up. It was always a quiet alley, and it remains closed off and secret. Almost everything else has gone.

TEWKESBURY’S NEW MICRO PUB TO OPEN SOON Tewkesbury has established itself as a leading town to go out and socialise at the many of the town’s pubs and eateries. Bucking the general trend, a new micro pub,

The Cross House Tavern, is set to open at the

heart of the town. The new proprietors are proud to announce that they have completely restored the premises complete with a Victorian tiled interior. The pub boasts an array of other period features including oak beams and paneling, all of which makes an ideal venue for an evening drink. On offer will be a choice of five locally sourced cask ales, set up behind the bar on tap, as well as local ciders and perry’s, which will rotate and vary so that there is always something new to try. The owners delayed opening the pub after the original features were discovered under internal cladding and have invested heavily in the restoration, which included the remanufacture of replacement matching tiles by a manufacturer in Stoke on Trent. The pub comes with some interesting alcoves and small rooms, generating a rare and convivial atmosphere to enjoy a nice drink.

The Grand Twyning Easter Bonnet Parade On Saturday the 30th March 2019, Twyning will be hosting their Easter Bonnet Parade. This is hosted by Twyning Community Parade Team. Starting with a meet at the Village Inn at Twyning at 3pm. Then the parade will follow, dance and sing along with a tractor around the green. The party continues at the decorated Village Inn Skittle Alley at around 4pm for a children’s tea party and music until 6pm. The theme this year is

‘The Greatest Showman!’ The Parade Team will be dressed up as characters from the film and invite people to dress up also if they wish. It is classed as an Easter Bonnet Parade so if you want to come please make and wear one, there will be prizes

WINNER OF THE SUPER CHALLENGE JAY BANBROOKE Jays a regular member of Gym & Tonic, but had never taken one of our super challenges. Jay fancied something to push him to the next level so when I suggest this he was keen to give it a try. From training 1-2 times a week before the challenge, heâ€™s now a regular 3-4 and sometimes 5 times a week. From start to finish a great effort was put in on getting to the gym more regularly and pushing himself more each session. Well it definitely paid off, Jay lost a whooping total of 14.2kg since the start of the challenge. Well done Jay. By Chris Warren.
