The first section of this book focuses primarily on the life of her second child, Jeremiah, known as Jer, who has returned to Ireland after surviving the horror of the trenches. He grows up as a child needing to be a survivor, and as we trace his life over selected years his strength of character comes through. We witness the burial of his beloved elder sister Mamie and the effects this has on the enlarged family; but he has a loving wife, Mary, and six children. In the closing section of this compact story the year is 1982
and the focus is on Jer's youngest daughter Nellie as she reflects on her life, and the sad start to her marriage to Dinsy, his early death and a life of widowhood. It is Nancy though who is the connecting thread of the book, in the middle section her history is revealed. We know she is a survivor, as her presence is always there throughout Jer's story. Her relationship with Michael Egan, however, sends her and her family on a journey that is the "Life Sentence" of the title. Their lives are witnessed through the poor rural background of Douglas, outside Cork, one with strong community bonding. Ireland is a ravaged country at the start of this book, though is quietly recovering during Jer's life, and even Douglas is growing and expanding as the final pages conclude this quietly elegant readable family story. Extreme poverty is now leading to many adults, children and babies experiencing hunger, malnutrition, ill health, hypothermia, disease - and for some, death. “There is such desperation for families to earn money, that in the cities some small children are asking passersby if they can polish their shoes for them. “They should be in school but this being denied in the same way as jobs for their mothers, they have little alternative. All this is happening whilst Afghanistan is going through an exceptionally cold winter. It is heart breaking to see children standing in the snow with no shoes or warm coats. “A lot of weavers who make the rugs which I

And then you move south to Herat where they are experiencing a severe drought and so there will be no crops this year. It is a desperate situation. “Our first fundraising effort last summer made it possible to raise £10,000. This was used to create packages of rice, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and oil to give to families in need. Tewkesbury Battlefield Society is continuing with its popular guided walks of the battlefield this Spring. Departing from the Abbey Lawn Car Park in Gander Lane, the walks cover around two miles over the site of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, and last about two hours. There is no charge, but donations to the society’s funds are welcome. The next walks are on Sunday 6th March and Sunday 3rd April, leaving at 2pm. We hope that soon these four homes will be recognised officially as “Items of Historical Interest”, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. They were originally named 1-4 Holme Cottages, were first designed in 1913 by Borough Surveyor, Robert Ridler. “One of the most important pieces of work was the sewering of the Gloucester Road in the year 1900 which permitted that road to be developed, and subsequently drained the Priors Park Estate.” He also designed these cottages, intended to render a rural ambiance for the tenants. This pioneering move was no doubt permitted by the “1875 Artisans Dwellings Act” but implementation was delayed by World War I. In 1922 the Council announced in the Tewkesbury Register: the “First 12 Houses Be Named 'Holme Cottages' And (12) New Houses 'the Gastons'. By this time the Addison’s 1919 Housing Act brought in subsidies for council house building and aimed to provide 500,000 "homes fit for heroes" within a threeyear period. In 1921, therefore it was fitting that one of the first tenants was the widow of one of the older volunteers, 39year-old Cpl J A Simms,

who was killed fighting with the local regiment at the 1915 Battle of Loos. When he volunteered, they were joint tenants of the Black Bear Inn. Robert Ridler and Tewkesbury Council provided 24 houses in this block (of more than
three designs]) but many more followed nearby in “Priors Park” to enable the start of the “Slum Clearance” scheme of 1933 from Tewkesbury’s ancient Alleys. This is part of a project, sponsored by Prior’s Park Neighbourhood
Project. The members were all brought up in Prior’s Park after World War II and all are recording their “wonderful childhood”. After a century, it is surely a worthwhile design and, definitely, an “Item of Historical Interest”?

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Conditions osteopaths Preparations are well underway for the return of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival on 9th and 10th July after 2 years of being cancelled due to Covid. Big things are planned for this summer being a belated 550th anniversary commemoration of the battle of Tewkesbury. Thanks to grants from the Arts Council, Gloucestershire Community Foundation, the Build Back Better Market Towns Grant, Tesco’s, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Bookworm and sponsorship from Cotteswold Dairy and Firmfix, the Sunday community parade will be bigger and more spectacular than before. Carnival artists will be going in to all the local schools and youth groups helping them create medieval inspired models, costumes and banners to parade. There will be three new Tewkesbury Giants created by local artists Matthew West and Jane Calvert. The main festival will have all the usual attractions including the battle re-enactment, living history displays, funfair, food and drink stalls,

In Tewkesbury, there are many talented young people who contribute to the artistic and cultural landscape of the town. It is very important to recognise this talent and celebrate these incredible achievements, considering that young people are the future of the town. Nathan Thomas, an aspiring professional jazz pianist, has always been musically-oriented.
Since the age of four, he has been playing a range of musical instruments and currently, at the age of 17, has achieved a Grade Eight Distinction in the drums and is working towards a Grade Seven in the piano. Due to these musical achievements, this has also permitted him to teach drums up to a Grade 2 standard under his supervision. Impressively, he is the youngest drummer ever in the Glouces-
A successful charity event was held by the Tewkesbury YMCA Railway Society on Saturday 22nd Jan 2022 in the Baptist Church Hall. The display by the society showcased local railway related artefacts and several model railway layouts for all to see. There was good attendance throughout the day enabling approx £890 to be raised towards the Baptist church extension funds.
Tewkesbury’s Talented by Annabelle Lee tershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and because of that, he had the amazing opportunity to tour to Berlin and play the famous Menin Gate and outside the Flanders Field Museum. He has also travelled to Torquay where he played the Timpani, or simply a kettledrum, in the West of England Brass Band Championship. These opportunities are vital for young people to gain the skills they need in order to become successful within the music industry and the wider world. He is currently at Pates Grammar School but originally attended Tewkesbury Secondary School where he achieved a Grade Nine

in his Music GCSE and is currently working towards an A* in Music A-Level. While also composing symphonies that contribute towards this A-Level, he regularly performs at private parties with his band and has a number of them already booked in the upcoming months. In September, Nathan will be heading off to Birmingham University to further his edu-
cation and knowledge about jazz piano and hopefully be able to become a professional. He also has a regular gig playing the piano at the local Berkeley Arms every Sunday from 4 till 6 but has also played the piano at The Bell and other pubs in Tewkesbury. Occasionally, other talented young people
accompany Nathan while he is playing the piano, either with another instrument such as a saxophone or just vocally. Not only is his music performed live, he also releases original music to SoundCloud and Spotify that allows him to share his music with a wider community than just Tewkesbury.

RAF Stoke Orchard, and its very interesting history by Richard Chatham Many of you will take rubbish to the Recycling unit at Wingmoor Farm, Stoke Orchard, but how many of you will realise just how important that field on the right and those hangars were during WWII. It was in 1939 that a training airfield was planned at Stoke Orchard. Construction started in 1940. In this aerial photo of 1945, the grass runway, at one time reinforced with metal sheeting, is clearly

It is quite alarming that we have a copy of a 1939 aerial photo from Luftwaffe files showing the Germans knew about the airfield before it was even built. The Airfield welcomed its first aircraft when No.10 Elementary Flying Training School arrived at RAF Stoke Orchard the Airfield between the 23rd and 27th Septem-
ber 1941, when they moved from Weston Super Mare with their 54 Tiger Moths, due to that runway becoming unserviceable. However, pilot training was soon to be concentrated elsewhere, and the Army Glider Training School 3 arrived on 21st July 1942. Training was mainly in 2 seat Hotspurs launched on a tow from Miles Masters and Tiger Moth aircraft. Sadly, there were many accidents recorded - some very serious and three of those airmen who died are buried in Stoke Orchard Churchyard. One must pay great tribute to those who landed their Horsa Gliders in Normandy on D. Day, in Arnhem and in Sicily making such important advances for the allied forces - many trained here in Stoke Orchard. Of the three Horsa Gliders that landed at Pegasus Bridge in the early hours of D Day – June 6th 1944, at least three of those pilots were trained here at Stoke Orchard. The Replica Horsa

Also stationed at RAF Stoke Orchard was The WAAF Training School having accommodation for 201 trainees. Subjects taught varied from Pay and Administration to Nursing, Catering and even Glider assembly. The final group stationed here was The No.7 Maintenance Unit, part of the main logistical unit based at Quedgeley. The airfield was also used to fly new assembled Hurricanes and Typhoons from Gloster

February was another crafty meeting. Thanks to our guest, Helen Rhymer, who brought along many of her finest patchwork and quilt creations. She also explained the different styles and the methods used to attain such beautiful stitchwork. Helen has also offered to do a workshop for our members if any of us would like to get started with this craft. Next month we will be lace making with Sue and Sue. Eighteen of us also attended an extremely lovely late Christmas meal at Tilly’s. Wonderful food and many thanks to the ladies at Tilly’s for making our evening special. One should also make mention of world renowned Amy Johnson, who after her courageous world records, came to live in Stoke Orchard. She is seen in this picture with Eric Neal

This amazing flight was made less than twelve months after attaining her pilot’s licence in 1929. She said of her house in Swan Lane, Stoke Orchard “it is a marvellous little cottage

Our Pub: the Nottingham Arms Reader Louise Jones, who runs Tewkesbury Cards and Gifts, recently brought a lovely poem to our attention. Written by Rachel Langdon, landlady of the Nottingham Arms, the poem first appeared on Social Media, and has since received a lot of attention and praise. ‘Our Pub’ is Rachel’s eulogy to the popular High Street hostelry. The Nottingham Arms dates back to the early 16th century, with the huge timber beam in the bar being dated to 1500. It has been a tavern since the 1850s and was previously known as the Nottingham House Inn. “Her twisted windows are the eyes to her soul that see you before you see her, yet they draw you in, never whispering a word of what they’ve seen. “Her rickety floor is the footprint of a million steps that have walked upon her, felt the flow of dance, the heaviness of sadness, yet never whispering a word of what she’s felt.

TEWKESBURY RIVER REGATTA 2022 Tewkesbury River Regatta will be held this year over the weekend of 24th/25th September. As well as activities on the river there will be guided walks and information about past uses of the rivers and the adjoining land. The event’s theme will be pollution, particularly looking at the plastic litter that washes from our streets into the rivers and out to sea where it is ingressed by the fish we then eat. 1st Tewkesbury Guides Centenary Display at Tewkesbury Museum This year, 1st Tewkesbury Guides are marking their centenary, admittedly a little late due to covid. Girl Guiding in Tewkesbury started in early 1915 under the leadership of Miss Iris Brierly of Southwick Park and ran until the end of the Great War. It restarted again at the beginning of 1921, running until the end of WW2 and restarting again in April 1948. It has been running ever since. Tewkesbury Girl Guides are now 102 years old, but
covid means that it is only now that we can safely celebrate our centenary. Some of our Leaders were well know ladies of Tewkesbury, included Miss Daphne Moore, sister of author and pioneering conservationist John Moore and Miss Scobell of Walton House. Tewkesbury Museum have kindly agreed for us to put on a display depicting our 100 years and it will be available from the 19th of March
The new season at Croft farm water park, By Tom Lawrence “We are at last looking forward to welcoming local school and youth groups back to Croft Farm Water park during the spring/summer of 2022. We have developed an online booking system now for day visitors and watersports boat hire/ lessons. You can even book a beach hut for the day ! My watersports company based at Croft Farm Water park is very keen on keeping youngsters that have a good interest in outdoor work and come to us regularly to practice their skills on the water throughout their youth. When they reach 16yrs we are able to offer these local people work to encourage and enthuse others that use our facility through running basic skills lessons and providing all the appropriate kit for the activity. A masterpiece in engineering When the Gloucestershire Warwickshire railway reopens in March, visitors that alight at Broadway station, will see the incredible work, that has taken place over the winter season, by a small team of talented volunteers. An extension of the station canopy has been manufactured from scratch using techniques, used from the beginning of the railway age. The superstructure is formed into lattice framework of heavy gauge steel sections joined together using the hot rivet process. The process works by drilling a hole through two or more pieces of steel plate, a rivet with a domed
head on one end is heated to red heat, pushed into drilled hole, the plain end is swaged over with a compressed air rivet gun. This process was used the world over, examples using this technique include the Eiffel Tower, and the Empire State Building. Welding steel became the adopted pro-
cess during the mid 20th Century, and rivetting steel became a forgotten art. The work at Broadway is probably unique in the UK, it has been a task of joy for the team involved and the results look spectacular and from an era long gone. The canopy will provide weather protection to the covered footbridge when the second platform opens.

We had some exciting visits planned for 2020, notably a visit to the Energy from Waste incinerator at Javelin Park, near Gloucester, a possible visit to Ragley Hall and an eagerly anticipated visit to the legendary Bletchley Park. Of course, all these events had to be cancelled because of the Covid restrictions. But here we are in 2022, anticipating the end of the pandemic, enjoying our regular face-to-face Tuesday morning meetings and …maybe looking forward to some of those outings which we have been denied since 2019. One of our speakers recently was Kate Aubury from the Kemerton Conservation Trust who gave us a beautifully illustrated talk on the work of the Trust conserving wildlife and the ancient landscape in our own area. As a result of this talk we are now planning a visit to the Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve and the woodland walks in June this year when the flora and fauna will be at their most beautiful. As you will see from our March events programme, we are to have a talk about the restoration of the old Cotswold
water mill at Stanway and we are going to follow this with an outing to the Mill in early September. So whilst Probus Club members are optimistic for the future of the Club, we have also been enjoying some brilliant speakers recently. We had a fascinating talk by John Nixon about the history and development of China and one of our regular speakers, Dr Katy Bellamy the renowned cognitive neuroscientist specialising
in sleep and memory conditions came to us for a third visit, her subject being “The seven ages of sleep”. And one of our own members, Paul Miller presented us with the second part of his experiences as an Englishman living and working in Belfast during the Northern Ireland troubles of the mid 1970’s, focusing this time on the society and culture in Northern Ireland. Tewkesbury Town Council hosted an exhibition focusing on the vision for Tewkesbury in 2030, on Saturday 18th September 2021 at the Watson Hall. The event had many displays on future projects which are being considered in the Tewkesbury area, to give members of the public an opportunity to make comments and/or fill in feedback forms. These comments have been analysed and passed to the relevant organisations to advise them on residents’ feelings and feedback. It’s important to note that this was an
informal consultation exercise and not part of a statutory consultation. 161 feedback forms were completed in total. Are we not glad to be back! Manor Players of Tewkesbury are returning with a production of “Hi De Hi!” (Ho De Ho), to The George Watson Hall Tewkesbury this April 7th to the 9th. (Matinee on Saturday lunch time) This is our first production since the pandemic struck and we have all been very keen get get back on the stage. Hi De Hi was written by David Croft and Jimmy Perry and ran from 1980 to 1988. (Yes is was that long ago!). Croft and Perry also bought us other comedy greats “Dads Army”and “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum”. We are attempting to bring back the magic of the TV series and the larger than life characters. However Manor Players, of course, are adding their own magic with a few changes, songs and character twists. The show is being directed by Pete O’Brien assisted by Ian Lever.
Hi De Hi was not written as a musical but as we are all probably aware the Red/ Blue at coats at Butlins and other holiday camps always had an entertainment trick up their sleeves to earn themselves a few extra £sd. Based in the late 1950’s in camps like Butlins or Pontins, this is a show about the staff, their hopes, dreams, disapointments and back stories, while they duck and dive to make their way through another holiday season. There will plenty of opportunities for audience participation. We have enlisted friends of the group
Val Lockley as choregrapher, and Paul Hardy as musical director. We will be using live musicians, not backing tracks, for the show! The folly is said to have been built by Squire Parsons of Kemerton, who carefully calculated the height of the tower so that when standing on top, the visitor would be exactly 1000 feet above sea level. The large stone in the small quarry below is known as ‘The Elephant Stone’ - and it’s easy to
see why! The rock (also known as the Bambury or Banbury Stone) is said to walk down to the Avon to drink when the bells of Pershore Abbey chime midnight on Midsummer Day. Exit via the earthworks known as Kemerton Camp (8) and take the permissive path back to the Bridleway (9). Turn right to descend to point (4), and back down to Kemerton.

What is Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)? This condition refers to compromised air movement through the upper airways (nose, mouth, voice box) and trachea (windpipe) due to the head shape of certain breeds referred to as brachycephalic, writes Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Vets. Visually, on the outside, a brachycephalic head conformation will have a short muzzle and flattened face. What isn’t so obvious is that the genetics of these breeds also result in narrow nostrils, an overlong and thick soft palate, collapse of the larynx and a reduced diameter of the windpipe. These multiple factors act together to cause obstruction of air into the lungs. BOAS is usually diagnosed in certain breeds. Not all the individuals within the breed are necessarily affected but it is common across the general population. Recent research suggests that over 70% of English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs have this condition to some degree. These breeds are currently very popular and an open discussion is needed with breeders and owners so that vets can provide the best care for the
individual whilst educating healthier breed characteristics.

What are the signs of BOAS? The signs of BOAS are varied and can range in severity, including some or all of the following: • Reduced or poor exercise tolerance • Difficulty breathing during exercise • Poor tolerance to heat • Restlessness at night • Retching regurgitation and vomiting • Collapse due to lack of air
What treatments are available for BOAS? There are a number surgical procedures to try to help individuals suffering from BOAS. The vets at Folly Gardens keep up to date with the

large volume of research available for this condition and will tailor surgery to the specific needs of the pet. Most dogs suffering from the clinical signs of BOAS that receive prompt, appropriate treatment can experience a significant improvement in exercise tolerance and ease of breathing. However it is not possible to create a completely normal airway for a brachycephalic dog so pets can remain prone to heat stress. It is generally hoped that surgery to the nose, soft palate and larynx will stop or slow the progression of voice box collapse (laryngeal collapse) that develop as a result of the negative pressures developed during respiration. The evidence is that early intervention is likely to offer a better outcome than waiting until this condition has become severe. We have always offered a free blood pressure testing service at Badham Phar-macy but
will be given advice and support. Patients who have high blood pressure will be offered the free loan of a ambulatory blood pressure machine for 24 hours. This machine will give the GP very valuable data, which will assist in the treatment of the condition. In patients with

Volunteers at Bookworm Tewkesbury are delighted to announce that we can now provide a ‘bra bank’, a collection point for unwanted bras. The bras collected will go to ‘bras against breast cancer’. Through their bra recycling scheme and network of bra banks vital funds are raised for pioneering breast cancer research.
Bookworm Bra Bank The same bras also help to support small businesses in developing countries in Africa and around the world. The project prevents these bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life in countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain expensive to produce locally. Such
ventures provide income for families in developing
countries whilst providing employment for people living in the UK. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly. For every ton of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund research. So please drop off your old bras at Bookworm, 150 High St., Tewkesbury, GL20 5JP and help our collection grow.

BULL COURT: A LONG-GONE ALLEY
Bull Court lost its identity a hundred years ago, but is possibly the oldest identifiable alley in Tewkesbury. Today, it is part of the Hop Pole; the archway nearest the Cross used as their wheelchair access. It hasn’t always been part of the Hop Pole, though. It’s ‘front house’, identifiable by its windows, was once the Bull Inn. In about 1540, Clement Base rented half a burgage at the sign of the Bull, for 6d. In 1589, Mr Foskewe, the visiting Deputy Steward, presiding over the town’s Michaelmas Court, dined at the Bull. An inventory listed stables and a brewhouse in the court. By the eighteenth century, the court led to Hartland’s, later Bolding’s, tan yard. In the early censuses, most of the cottages in the court were occupied by tanners, suggesting that the business was thriving. Later, the tan yard closed becoming the ‘Eagle’ factory site (and now Elliot Court). The Hartland family had retained ownership because in 1889, following the death of Anna Maria Hartland, a large block of land, between Bull Court and Bank Alley, extending to the Mill Avon was sold by auction, in lots. Bull Court was described as a Front shop and dwelling house, with two cottages, workshop, wash house with hard and soft water pump, and stable. The front house seems to have been a butcher’s shop in the nineteenth century, with a slaughterhouse, probably the workshop building, in the court. In 1889, though, it was James Hopkins’ greengrocer’s shop, taken over by Frank Bloxham in 1904. By 1907 it was Smith’s pork butchers becoming the home of the Tewkesbury Food Committee at the end of the Great War. In about 1923 it was converted to its present form, to become part of the Hop Pole during a major upgrade of the hotel. It was then that redundant windows from work at the Cross House, up the road, were reused to replace the shop frontage and give the facade we see today. There were six cottages, with thirty-one occupants, in the court in 1841 By 1851 only three were occupied, soon falling to two. In 1907, the front house, two cottages and a three-stall stable were advertised for sale, along with the warehouse or workshop,
which became part of the YMCA in 1921. Bull Court’s cottages seem to have been respectable and law abiding. Occupants were certainly not affluent, and they suffered from the universal problems of overcrowding and poor water supply, but otherwise life was quiet. The court was in the news in 1905 when Reuben White slipped and fell off a railway wagon whilst loading sacks of barley malt. He was forced to sue his employers, William Rice and Co., corn merchants, who wouldn’t make the payments due under the then new Workmen’s Compensation Act, saying that it applied to working in factories and the railway siding was not a factory. They lost. They appealed. They lost again and Reuben was awarded about £8. A small victory for the working man. This court of two cottages suffered greatly during the Great War, losing three sons. Charles Hurcombe was killed in action in March 1915 and his brother Harry gassed in 1917. The Mann family next door fared little better, with Louis being killed in August 1916 and Fred wounded and hospitalised a month later. Mr and Mrs Mann seem to have been the last residents of the court, which was sold

in 1919. The warehouse was sold to the YMCA who linked it to their building next door. The remainder was incorporated into the Royal Hop Pole. It’s days of independent existence had ended, except for Mop Fair days when it was set up as a dummy ward to raise funds for the hospital. This, too, ended when the fair retreated out of Church Street. An attractive, but quiet, part of the street scene, it’s hard to imagine what the entrance was like in its heyday, with houses and a tanyard within it.

These are left to dry for a week or so, raked off (without being overly fastidious) and the hay removed from the area. The ground is then grazed (use a mower) for the rest of the season and then poached by roughing the ground up a bit in autumn. Then the ground is left during late autumn and winter, when livestock are housed. Some rotted muck is spread in spring and the process
starts again. Key points: native UK grasslands have far lower levels of nitrogen (N) than modern improved leys, so the muck is unnecessary until a pattern of nutrient removal is established after 5+ years, grasses used are less vigorous meadow species (keep lolium/rye away).
