VILLAGERS RALLY TO SUPPORT STABLES The good people of Twyning, near Tewkesbury, have acted swiftly in support of neighbours whose lives were devastated by a catastrophic fire. with their dogs. Donations of clothes, dog beds, horse rugs, horse tack and feed for the animals has flooded in. Cotswold Grange Residential Park have donated a mobile home, and transported it to the site so the family could move back in. Gary and Sandra Lawson of The Village

Last month a fire broke out in the utility room at the Downfield Lane home of Steve and Jacqui Falconer, and Jacqui’s daughter Skye. Believed to have started in an electrical appliance, the blaze quickly took hold in the adjacent Poultry Barn which consisted of twenty stables, a tack room, storage and Skye’s selfcontained accommodation. Jacqui and Skye are well known in the UK equestrian world and for their re-homing of res-

cue dogs. Fortunately they managed to save all the horses and ponies, although some of the dogs sadly perished. It took six fire engines and crews from as far away as Hereford and Worcester seven hours to contain the catastrophic blaze. Many villagers were also on hand that evening to offer any help they could; but the family had lost everything. Since then the community had rallied round to help Steve, Jacqui and Skye to return to the site

Spring's son Edward is in hospital, dying; her dead sister, Tempe haunts her. We read about their lives growing up, and Spring and Edward's years in the city. Spring dedicates herself to telling her son of his family, as he lies critically ill. Edward is in hospital as he was involved in an incident in which the streetcar he was driving went through a shop window. Whether or not this was intentional is the second strand of the storyline. There are strikes and demonstrations in the city, so there is a Union angle to these events, and Edward's involvement or participation in them.

Spring seemingly has never told her own life story, and family background to her son. Now, before it is too late, she uses a family scrapbook with newspaper cuttings to recount her history. Clean, friend when a young girl is kidnapped and taken into slavery, as "new blood," onto the Walker's farm where no new babies are born. Here this novel comes into it's own though some of the experiences are harsh reading, there is no attempt to hide the events. This part of the book is enhanced by some great characters, particularly the matriarch known as Mama Skins. The chapters of the book are time-lined, so we know the hour of the day within the hospital; while the historical ones carry the year and are enhanced with some replications of newspaper headlines. A nice touch. This is an unusual story which was well praised when it came out and was longlisted for last year's Women's Prize for Fiction. The historical detail is well recounted and authentic; not overly long it reads easily even if some of the subject matter is harrowing.

Steaming up for Spring Services resume on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway this month - and visitors are expected to travel from far and wide to enjoy a 28 mile round trip through the Cotswolds. Trains will run over the award-winning heritage line from Saturday 7th March, with the first engine steaming out of Toddington at 10.00am. The track now stretches for over 14 miles from Broadway via Winchcombe, terminating at Cheltenham Racecourse in the south. A wide variety of special events is planned for this year, starting with the ‘Easter Eggspress’ on Easter Monday - and the immensely popular ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds’ weekend on 25th/26th April. The Easter Eggspress will have free children’s quiz sheets with Easter puzzles and games, and there will be special

activities at Winchcombe Station - including a visit from the Easter Bunny. ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds’ is one of the most popular events at the GWSR, with re-enactors creating a nostalgic 1940s atmosphere. 2020's event will have an emphasis on the Home Front. At stations there will be vintage vehicle displays, trade stands, music and dancing with a 1940s theme. Passengers can meet the LDV (Home Guard) and King George VI, Churchill and Monty will be with inspecting the troops throughout the weekend. There will also be a separate event to mark

Electric car charging points installed at Council’s offices Tewkesbury Borough Council is helping to reduce road emissions in the borough by installing car charging points at its council offices in Tewkesbury. The charging points, provided by BP Chargemaster, are available for members of the public to use and can be found in the council offices’ rear car park. The council installed a 90kwh solar panel system on the roof of its offices back in 2016 to help provide power to the building – this renewable power will also now assist with delivering energy to the car charging points. The installation follows a successful pilot by the council to introduce a pool of hybrid cars for business use. The fleet includes hybrid vehicles and now a fully electric vehicle. The pilot was introduced to: reduce travel costs and emissions; remove unnecessary journeys; and combine trips to save time, money and the environment. The pilot was a great success and has now become ‘business as usual’ for staff who previously used their own vehicles for business use. Enterprise Car Club, the council’s supplier of

pool cars, was asked to provide a small fleet of vehicles to help the council streamline its business travel and reduce its carbon emissions.

In its first six months, the scheme reduced business travel emissions by 4 tonnes of CO2 and it is estimated that the council will make annual carbon savings of around 8.6 tonnes. The council’s lead member for finance and asset management, Councillor Robert Vines, said: “We hope the new car charging points will be well used by the public, as well as by council employees who are embracing new ways of working to save the tax payer money, reduce carbon emissions and

help our council become a carbon neutral organisation. “The pool car scheme in particular has been a great success and the partnership with Enterprise has resulted in incredible savings, both financially and environmentally.” MORE GREEN NEWS for more about what’s green on the local scene, see page 19.

GARDEN TOWN MAKES PROGRESS Tewkesbury Borough Council and Glos County Council are making progress with Tewkesbury’s Garden Town as the project for a new bridge over the railway at Ashchurch begins. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government awarded Tewkesbury Borough Council £8.1m of funding to deliver a bridge that will unlock parcels of land to the east of the as development opportunities. The bridge will include a new road, cycle path and walkway.

MITTON W.I. Tewkesbury Food Bank was the subject of our February meeting. From its start at Holy Trinity Church for 2 mornings a week to its present location in Church Street where it is open 4 mornings. Mrs Marian Badham oversees the day to day running of this food bank, under the umbrella of The Trussle Trust. Those in crisis are able to receive food for 3 meals, for 3 days. Marian is also hoping to start a School Shoe collection point in the near future, so donations would be gratefully received. Our ladies also made a great donation of over 30kg of food and toiletries for the food bank. Next month we will be visited by Englands Glory Morris Dancers and April we will be welcoming members from all the Tewkesbury groups for The History of the Sewing Machine New members very welcome to come along and join us. The Burgage Plot

This is the Burgage plot that Abel Jordan gradually bought, writes John Dixon. Our Medieval town was planned: it was divided up into plots of land big enough for an opulent front house 15 metres wide on the High Street with a garden for self-sufficiency stretching at least 60m to a service road, now Oldbury Road. There at no 22, Abel Reginald Wilberforce Jordan was born in 1893, the son of a shop keeper who had also bought no 23. A fruit and potato dealer himself, after a quiet war in the Service Corps, Abel and his father set up a garage and taxi firm from there but, by 1921, Abel had bought the former ‘Manufactory’ at the other end of the plot at

101 High Street. He established a garage there which endured as Tewkesbury Car Mart until demolished for the modern shopping development. An evidently energetic and combative man, he erected a garage in Gloucester Road, became a councillor in 1924 and then became involved in what was dubbed the ‘Second

Battle of Tewkesbury in the Council Chamber’ as his council tried to evict him - a councillor! - to build a car park. Eventually the car and coach park we enjoy today was built. He was defeated in the 1933 election and by 1939 had retired to the Droitwich area as a farmer and died in 1955, leaving only a modest legacy. Now in 2020 his garage and his family homes have been rede-

We opened our online shop selling high quality CBD oils and tinctures, in 2018. The business took off at a tremendous rate, the feedback and popularity for the product just grew and grew. We built the business on building trusting relationships with our customers and providing high quality at affordable prices. Keeping our packaging to a minimum was another priority for us, switching from plastic to glass and recycled packaging. We got fed up with receiving so much waste when buying stock in we decided it was something we cared enough about and wanted to take action. It’s going to be free to ‘spend a penny’ in Tewkesbury! Tewkesbury Town Council is removing all charges from the public toilets in Tewkesbury. Over the next two weeks the doors will be replaced at the Gloucester Road toilet block and alterations will take place at the Spring Gardens toilet block to remove the current coin entry system. Tewkesbury Town Mayor; Cllr Terry Walker said: ‘Public conveniences should be just that and the Town Council believe these facilities should be available to all without the need to find 20p. We hope that both residents and visitors to our town will appreciate the change.’

Ann was born in Co. Durham (now North Yorkshire) circa 1805. She married Charles Townend, also from Yorkshire, in 1833. Charles made his fortune from the manufacturing of cloth. When Charles retired they moved south – firstly to Strensham Court (1861) and then to Puckrup Hall (1875) – now known as the Puckrup Hilton Hotel. Together they were subscribers to the Tewkesbury Cottage Hospital Fund in Oldbury Road. Charles died in 1879. Ann, became a wealthy widow, and supported many local charities and institutes until her death in 1886. Probably the most significant endowment was for the Sunday School Hall in Churchend – “to promote the religious and moral education of the poor children in Twyning and the surrounding district, within a four mile radius.” Nowadays, in an effort to cover running costs, the hall is hired out to many local individuals,the local Bridge Club and also various Church events. The Hall has been sympathetically modernised and is well maintained, with a useful kitchen and disabled

toilets. The hall can accommodate up to 60 people with a secluded and enclosed grassed garden providing extra scope in the warmer months. This could include space for a marquee, bouncy castle, model train track or other similar ideas. FENDER MODERN PLAYER TELECASTER THINLINE DELUXE “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a guitarist in possession of a good Telecaster, must be in want of a Thinline.” …well, that may not be the exact words Jane Austen used, but I’m sure that’s what she meant. If you are happy Telecaster player, you may not know it yet, but you really could do with a Thinline as well. To try is to buy! With the invention of the world’s first, mass-produced, solid-body, electric guitar; Leo Fender and chums got it spectacularly right. For the best part of seventy years, the Telecaster has survived numerous changes in taste and style and remains the most respected of electric guitars. During the whole of that time the Tele has rarely strayed far from the original blueprint, with one notable exception – the Thinline. The story goes that, by 1968, the light ash that Fender were using to build their Teles was becoming scarce and, therefore expensive. A solution to this problem was hit upon by one of their in-house luthiers, Roger Rossmeisl, who had previously worked for Rickenbacker and was well versed in the design and construction of semi-hollow guitars. To Rossmeisl, the solution was simple – use less wood! The powers that be at Fender thought this a splendid idea and it wasn’t long before they were manufacturing quantities of their new ‘Thinline Telecaster’. 1969 saw Fender’s introduction of their new guitar to the market and it was immediately popular. The chambered body made the Tele so much lighter and the F-hole on the top gave it a really classy, jazzy appearance. Although the pick-ups and wiring were unchanged from the original, the sounds produced were subtly different – hard to describe, yet definitely different. Encouraged by this acceptance of difference amongst Telecaster players, Fender decided to push the boat out a little further. In 1972 they brought out what was to become the classic Thinline which incorporated a pair of humbucking pick-ups - a great sounding, lightweight instrument. Like a Telecaster but not a Telecaster. And that was pretty much it as far as development of the model went until the early 2000’s when the ever-innovative ‘Fender Crafted in China’ came out with their Modern Player Telecaster line. As part of this line, Fender introduced the Modern Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe – an example of which is currently in residence at Strummers. Not only is this handsome guitar incredibly well made and excellent value for money; it also features a pair of soapbar P90 pick-ups. These take you into brand new sonic territory. From smoky, jazzy tones to screaming rock - the choice is yours. And all in a reassuringly familiar, yet lightweight package. This is my current personal favourite to pick up and play in the store and as soon as it finds its new, lucky owner; I’m determined to find another - if only for myself! Paul Thomas

There’s been quite a few changes over the winter. The model fairground restoration is nearly complete, and is already a star attraction in the refurbished front window. More on that next month. We have almost completed our submission for “accreditation” – a sort of MOT for museums. A lot of bureaucracy maybe, but essential if we want access on experts on running museums and to apply for grants. And we do. For we have plans to develop the museum and attract even more visitors. Improvements to the building are vital, and our next project will be to re-use the room on the top floor vacated by the fairground to give more space to local hero, Raymond Priestley. Next year is the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury, so we have plans to improve that display area as well. We want to involve as many local volunteers as we can. In looking after the exhibits, helping with projects, making improvements, administration, research, house-

MOT’s £39.95 Dear Residents of Tewkesbury. We would just like to say a very big thank you to many of you who recently came to our meeting at the Watson Hall on the 13th February. You were able to voice your many concerns about the County Council plans to install meters and charge in Tewkesbury’s main streets together with their plans to make far reaching alterations to permit parking in other areas of the town. During the meeting we were able to get a good idea of the impact many of these changes will make to not only the residents but, shoppers, workers, visitors and

our shop keepers. I think it is fair to say everyone saw the impact of charges as seriously detrimental to the viability of our town and really concerned that the County Council seemed to see Tewkesbury as another Cheltenham or Gloucester and not the market town it is. There was a real concern that the County seems remote and doesn’t understand Tewkesbury and there was a call for them to talk with residents and shop keepers first to avoid making such disastrous proposals ever again. The Town Council had been left out of the loop and this must not happen again. As a result of the enormous response

from the people of Tewkesbury we are pleased to see the County Council have now ‘suspended’ their consultation. We hope this will lead to a cancellation and maybe by the time you read this it will have happened but in the meantime we can not rest on our laurels. Tewkesbury is a great place to live and work and we always aim to make it better but when attacked we must all defend our town with as much resolve that we can muster. For those with long memories, they may recall the delicious Pork and Beef baps that were served at this historic inn. The word was, that customers came from far and wide, often forming a queue to be served, to enjoy what was a local legend. The Hobnails Inn at Great Washbourne has recently been bought by the local family partnership of Easton and Alison Hogben, who formed Quality Inns in 1985. Quality Inns have restored the building and incorporated a number of nicely appointed, niche dining and drinking areas, along with a main bar area and a dining room for larger groups. We started our programme of weekly talks after the New Year break when Nik Marsh visited us to describe the trials and tribulations (and expense) of being a regular Ironman Triathlon competitor which takes him all over the world, and of the rigorous training required to maintain peak condition for entering this challenging event. At one point during the talk, Nik asked our members how many would be planning a triathlon in the future. No hands were raised! A week later Tony Griffith, a member of the Magic Circle, gave us an excellent presentation on The Art of The Magician. Everyone enjoyed Tony’s wonderful combination of the history of magic, actual magic tricks which baffled us all and his great sense of humour which enhanced the whole show. In total contrast to the frivolity of the magic show, one of our members, Ken Edwards who is a bereavement counsellor gave us a very

informative and sometimes emotive talk on Bereavement Awareness and how the charity that he represents, Cruse Bereavement Care helps bereaved people deal with the emotional and practical effects when a close family member dies. Later in the month, our long time member and former Probus Chairman Tim Woollatt gave us a delightful verbal ramble through his reminiscences of 1960’s and 70’s Bredon and his professional life as a Solicitor in Tewkesbury with some fascinating personal anecdotes often sprinkled with Tim’s sometimes mischievous sense of humour! TEWKESBURY’S BABE MAGNETS Local man Dave Joyce has written in to tell us about his interesting hobby which includes, discovery, waterway clearance and the subsequent disposal of debris found in our local waterways. I found out about magnet fishing by coming across a video on YouTube and I was intrigued by the idea. YouTube videos demonstrate how ferrous scrap metal can be retrieved from rivers and ponds by using a very powerful purpose-built magnet, attached to a strong rope. Some very interesting items have been retrieved from around the world that include jewellery, bags, safes, and other metal debris. This gave me the idea to help clear local rivers

of the old junk and to enjoy the excitement of finding lost treasures and as a hobby myself, my partner and son to enjoy together. Historical time pieces and old war medals are amongst a few things I’m hoping to discover. We all know that Tewkesbury is a very historic town full of history and hidden treasures. The many items I have already pulled out of the rivers include original nails that are 100s of years old, an outer metal cartwheel

rim and many items that I can not identify at the moment, these will be cleaned up to reveal their true purpose. Disposing of metal debris from the waterways helps Tewkesbury become a greener place. It is a great hobby for families to enjoy together whilst doing something positive for the environment. I have started a Facebook group called ‘Tewkesbury’s Babe Magnets’ so readers can find out more about the hobby. I would like to establish a warming community within my Facebook group, on the lookout for the next exciting find! Anyone can join, no matter your ability. My aim is to include everybody in Gloucestershire. As for the scrap that gets collected, I have a colleague, Graham Preedy, who is willing to remove anything that’s just scrap. The budding entrepreneurs pulled out all the stops to host a professionally organised event including catering, entertainment and securing guest speakers as well as offering businesses exhibitor stands.

charities including the Willow Foundation (a charity for children with serious illness), Stonewall Foundation and a project called Beyond Worlds which helps children who are unable to attend school due to medical conditions to connect with their creative writing skills. Local Solicitors firm,

Partner Malcolm Rees commented “We were delighted to support such a well organised event, and the students really impressed us with their organisational skills and business knowledge. A David Bowie open mic tribute night, hosted by local band, The Future Set, took place recently at the Berkeley Arms in Tewkesbury town centre. A raffle was held in aid of the charity, Maggies which included donations from local businesses and a unique, framed pencil drawing of David Bowie. Rescuing Hens Locals Danny Parrish and his Partner Adey Pye of The Coach House in Shuthonger have been rescuing Hens for over 4 years and currently a flock of 27 hens, saved from slaughter are enjoying a happy retirement. When commercial laying Hens reach 18 months old, they are deemed to be past their productive egg laying days and are sent for slaughter.

‘We always keep an eye on when The British Hen Welfare Trust has scheduled another rehoming date locally, allowing us to rescue a few more feathered friends! When we bring them home it is wonderful to see them tentatively taking their first steps outside feeling the earth and grass beneath their feet, scratching at the ground for the very first time and free to roam as nature intended.’ said Danny. Adey said ‘When they arrive, they are missing feathers and the combs on their heads are usually large, floppy and pale and they are nervous of their new surroundings. Within a few weeks however their feathers are growing back, and their combs are smaller and bright red. As they have never been outside,

they need to be encouraged into a new routine including when it’s time to get up and when to go to bed, to find shelter when the weather is wet and windy as they have never experienced this before! Hens are social animals and like to be part of a flock. Within just a few days of meeting each other, they will form a pecking order that is ranked in terms of dominance and it’s perfectly normal to have

lower ranking hens that might get bossed about a bit by those at the top. The therapeutic benefits of working with animals is well reported and this is an area we are looking to develop further.’ said Danny. Run as not for profit with proceeds from egg sales (available from the gate) going towards their upkeep and wellfare and enabling to rescue further hens throughout the year.

In November 1857, the ‘Register’ reported on the opening of the Corn Exchange, now the front area of the Town Hall. They observed that gentlemen attending the market ‘would no longer be compelled to stand in the public street or, in wet weather, take refuge in the miserable alley of the Cross Keys’. Whilst this wasn’t an alley under the proper definition, investigating it does lead us to an interesting, and forgotten, area of Tewkesbury’s past. The Cross Keys was a coaching inn, described as the second most important in Tewkesbury. It stood on the High Street, at No 11. The front is now occupied by Greggs and the HSBC bank. The alley referred to was the passage for horses and carriages which ran through to the stables at the rear, and to Back of Avon. If you stroll round to the rear, the remnants can still be seen. The recently renovated ‘Old Boat House’ was the stable block (with a cottage where the garage now is at the western end) and if you look up the plot, the arch in the back of the High Street building is all that remains of the ‘alley’. The oldest map we have dates from 1883, after the inn closed. Buildings in what was the alley had already been demolished and the layout was not dissimilar to today, but it is easy to imagine a bustling, built-up inn yard being there. Though it is likely that the early building was timber-framed, it was altered, probably in the late eighteenth century, to the brick-fronted building which can still be seen on the upper floors. Like the old Swan next door, the ground floor has been extensively altered to create spaces suitable for modern commerce. We know nothing about its early life as a tavern, but it rose to prominence in the Georgian era. Coaching was its life blood. It rose in importance as turnpike roads made travel easier, and it died slowly as the railways replaced coaches. The inn offered hearty meals and beds for the night as well as owning a stable of horses for hire as ‘post horses’, either with a carriage and ‘post boy’ or for riding to an inn with which

it had a reciprocal agreement. Business must have been cut-throat because as early as 1838 posting was being advertised to Cheltenham, Worcester, Bromsgrove and Birmingham at 15 pence a mile, a discount of threepence. Not only did it serve the needs of travellers, but it was also a centre for business and social

Grantley Berkeley. In 1837, it was John Martin who was again celebrating, this time about local government

events in the town. The better classes attended Subscription Assemblies, or dances. As the name suggests, attendance was by subscription and involved complicated etiquette, mimicking the events in centres like Bath and Cheltenham. The better establishments in town; especially the Assembly Room in the Town Hall (now the Council Chamber), the Swan, the Hop Pole and the Cross keys held a short series in the ‘season’, part of a way of life captured by Jane Austen. The Cross Keys also provided a forum for public meetings and political debate. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the debate was heated, especially in Tewkesbury, where the old Borough returned two members two Parliament and there was a strong movement locally for reform of the Borough Council and nationally for parliamentary reform. The inn became a centre for reformers and liberals. In 1813 John Martin MP was chairing public meetings to lobby against the corn tolls being imposed by the Borough, which were damaging trade. In 1831, Charles

reform. He addressed the townspeople, assembled in the High Street, from a window of the inn. Four years later, he was back in the news, when he underwent a ‘chairing’ ceremony. Despite the name, this was a day of celebration, beginning with the killing of lots of fatted calves (seven prime beef, seven sheep and several lambs) which were distributed amongst the poor, such that a savoury odour pervaded the whole town.

Mr Martin then perambulated the decorated streets in his carriage, to great acclaim, finishing at the Cross Keys with a ‘grand dinner most numerously attended’. The most interesting politician to frequent the Cross Keys was Humphrey Brown. Son of a local merchant, he was the first Tewkesbury-born MP and the first candidate ever to get no votes. He was described as having an uncontrollable love of speculation, which got him into lots of scrapes, and eventually into prison, following the collapse of the Royal British Bank. He remained a local hero, though, and on his release from prison and return to Tewkesbury the Abbey bells were rung and his carriage was met at King John’s bridge, where the horse was replaced by townspeople, who pulled him through the streets, preceded by musicians, to the Cross Keys. He spoke to the cheering crowds from the window. They were dismissively described by a generally hostile press as ‘mostly factory workers’; people who had no vote. At a municipal level, the Inn was implicated in a chaotic election in 1855, where both parties used drink to tempt voters. The Liberals in the Cross Keys, it is said, were drawing beer by the bucket. The Swan next door was doing the same in the Conservative cause, and the streets were full of drunkards. Voting was at the Town Hall, to which semi-conscious electors were dragged and induced to vote, fought over, quite literally, by the agents of the

OUR ALLEYWAYS continued two parties. Turn-out, it was reported, was a very respectable 90%, though only the 708 burgesses were eligible to vote. Aside from travel and politics, the main business of the inn was auctions. In days before estate agents almost all property, from large farms or mansions to humble cottages, was sold by auction in inns, as were all manner of other things. The Cross Keys was an early auction room for the Ham aftermath, and for all its life it was where the turnpike tolls were auctioned and the Turnpike Trust held their meetings. By 1870, the tide had turned for coaching inns and the Cross Keys wasn’t able to compete for railway customers.

several similar examples survive. Chapel Court, the old Plough (Theoc House) in Barton Street and Bull Passage, now part of the Hop Pole in Church Street, are very visible reminders of an affluent era.

Things had been going downhill, and maybe the nadir was when Mary Ann Procter was fined for throwing a spittoon which hit Ann Wakefield. Such petty disorder was unheard of in the past. In 1872, at an auction sale in the Hop Pole, lot four was ‘An old established licenced inn called the Cross Keys Inn, with

the brewhouse and other outbuildings, yard, garden and premises thereto adjoining and belonging, now in the occupation of Mrs Ann Wakefield’. Shortly afterwards, the Central Drapery Warehouse opened in the ‘front House’ and the carriage passage was closed forever. It was never an alley in the true sense, but

OSTEOPATHY ADVICE with Katie Hogg, Two Rivers Osteopathy Repetitive strain injury can occur as a result of overuse of one tissue over time. It mostly occurs in tendons but can occur in ligaments too. Tendons attach muscles to bone and ligaments attach bone to bone. Remaining in one position or doing a repetitive action over many months or even years, can result in a stretch and strain on the tissue. Although tendons have a better blood supply then ligaments, neither are supplied as well as muscles are. When they get strained the body will produce inflammatory mediators to pack an area in order protect it. This means it can become painful to use this tissue. This is a slow build up and will often be a gradual onset injury. It is an injury not limited to sports or desk workers. This is a class of injury that can happen to anyone who does a movement the same way for many months or years. This could be using a mouse, walking with a limp, hitting a tennis ball or mucking out a stable. If you do the same movement often enough it will irritate those tissues. So how can we

any inflammatory mediators, bringing in new oxygen also. If you cannot rest in between tasks then make sure you ice pack a few times after over using one area. This can ease the discomfort and encourage the essential blood flow to the area. The trick is catch it early as RSI can go from acute to chronic very quickly and chronic tissues are harder to heal. Taylor's bell foundry, Loughborough has recently cast a new bell for Tewkesbury Abbey. The bell which weighs approximately 4.5 cwt will be the lightest bell (and highest note) in the tower and will give local ringers the chance to do more ringing on 10 bells. 17 local ringers plus the Vicar travelled to Loughborough to see the bell being cast and the Vicar said a prayer before the molten metal was poured into the mould. At our second meeting of the year our members enjoyed a talk, given by Bob Skelt, about the history of Bletchley Park and the people who worked there, from a 588 acre farm and farmhouse, through to an impressive Victorian house built to entertain, was nearly a housing development before being discovered by a group of ‘codebreakers’ and turned into one of the most important locations in the second world war. Again, another very interesting and fascinating talk. Many members wore green hearts to the meeting as part of ‘show the love this February’ in support of climate change. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, March 11th and the speaker will be John Heathcott who will be telling us about Ancient Woodland in Gloucestershire. New members are always very welcome and if you are interested in joining us, we meet on the second Wednesday of the month at Tirlebrook School starting at 7.30pm. It is the second smallest of the Canaries and is like stepping back in time and is quite unspoilt with beautiful beaches and sweeping vistas. It even has its own whistling language, Silbo Gomero. The islands earliest inhabitants used it to communicate across the deep ravines and valleys. It is a compulsory school subject and you can see demonstrations of the language at the hotel Torre del Conde in San Sebastian every Saturday and daily in a couple of restaurants on the island. Due to a number of imminent retirements, Tewkesbury Nature Reserve (TNR) urgently requires new volunteers to join the Board of Trustees and management team.

TNR is an independent community nature reserve, and a registered charity. We are well on our way to fulfilling our vision of “A haven for wildlife and a place where people can connect with nature”, and we now need to recruit several new individuals to help take the reserve forward.

A TNR Trustee is an unpaid voluntary role, working as part of the team which has overall responsibility for the reserve. TNR Trustees are the land-owners and leaseholders for the reserve, set the strategic direction, oversee its management, and ensure effective financial control.

Our reserve manager is assisted by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who meet monthly to help manage the day-to-day running of the reserve. This includes organising volunteer working parties on the reserve, events, educational activities and fund-raising.

As a TNR Trustee you will have a chance to make a real contribution to conservation, education, and health and wellbeing in the local community. You will be able to develop your strategic decision making skills, and your knowledge of governance and the responsibility of charity status.

We are especially keen to recruit someone with a conservation/ecological background who is able to help with formal monitoring and recording of both flora and fauna.

Requirements of the role of a TNR Trustee include: •

A genuine interest in and commitment to environmental and conservation issues, and a desire to make a difference.

Attendance at up to eight evening board meetings per year, in Tewkesbury. Most of our trustees also give additional time to the reserve as volunteers in some capacity, according to their individual interests, experience and skills.

A PRESENT FROM YORKSHIRE The Museum was recently contacted by Kate Genever, an artist who found a watercolour painting whilst browsing in the Hull Scrapstore. She bought it for £1 and set about locating the mill it portrayed. The signature is H Crawforth, and the East Riding Museum holds three of his pictures, depicting the local Skidby Mill, a windmill near Beverley, painted in 1917. Not a great deal is known about H Crawforth. The surname seems commonest in the Humberside area, so it was a long task, and probably a surprise, for East Riding Museum to eventually locate the mill as the Abbey Mill, Tewkesbury. The date is right for the painting, so it is likely to be the same artist. There’s no record at all of him in Tewkesbury, and we can only speculate upon what brought him (or her) here for long enough to create a lovely image of the Abbey Mill. When she found the mill, Kate decided to send the painting home, and offered it to the Museum, who gladly accepted it. She was even kind enough to cover all the costs of

packaging and postage of such a fragile parcel. It is now safely in the Museum and proudly displayed; a very welcome, and rare, view of the Mill in its later working days, before corn grinding stopped in 1921. Whilst the mill building itself is very recognisable, the sluice structure on the west has changed completely and the Ham bank is unrecognisable. The Museum would love to hear from people who might know more about these old features, and the general changes made to the Mill Avon between the Ham and the Victoria Gardens.

Tewkesbury Flower Club Our next meeting is on Tuesday 10th March at Bushley Village Hall. Doors open at 7.00pm and the meeting starts at 7.30pm. The demonstrator is Lucy Ellis from Bath and the title of her demonstration is “Opera goes to the Movies!”. Admission is £6 for visitors payable on the door. Who packs your parachute? I really doubt that any of you ask yourselves this question once a day, once a year or even once in a lifetime, writes David Slater. Perhaps you should. By the end of this piece I want you to really think about who packs your parachute as there are many people, I think, who are doing that and you aren't even recognising the fact. This actually results from the true story of an American jet pilot who served his country in the Vietnam War (1954 – 1975). His name was Charles Plumb. He flew many bombing missions dur-

ing his service, finally being shot down and spending six years in a Vietnamese prison, an ordeal in itself. He survived and, many years later, was enjoying a quiet meal in a restaurant with his wife when a man came over from a neighbouring table and said, “Excuse me for interrupting, but you are Charles Plumb who used to be a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam! “Last I heard of you

It is a pleasure to meet you, Sir!” “But how in the name of heaven do you know that?” asked Charles. “Because it was me who packed your parachute, Sir!” Charles Plumb threw his arms round the man and hugged him. With a voice trembling with emotion the man said, “I guess it must have worked!” “It sure did, my friend,” Charles replied. “If you hadn't made a good job of it there's no way I would be here today!” The evening continued in happy mood and eventually, shaking hands, they all set off for their respective homes. The strange thing was that Charles could not get off to sleep that night. The only thing he could think of was the sailor he had met that night. He was wondering how many times he had seen him when they were in service together but had never even bothered to say 'Hi there!' or 'How are you?' The thing was the pilots and ordinary sailors just didn't communicate with each other like that. He felt guilty that he had never spent a moment thinking about the men who spent endless hours in the bowels of the ship carefully folding the silk of each chute knowing that someone's life depended upon him doing his job; doing his job perfectly! Each time he did his job he was doing it for someone he didn't even know. So now I ask you to think about who it is in your life that is packing

your parachute! Everyone single one of us, in the normal run of things, has someone who provides us with what we need in order for us to make it through the day. I was interested to note that Charles Plumb made a point of saying that he needed many different types of parachute. Of course there was the physical, silken parachute that lowered him to the ground. But he would need a mental parachute, an emotional parachute and even a spiritual parachute in addition to the physical one to support him fully and help him to reach safety. In our own lives be they full of excitement or rather humdrum, life often offers us challenges. Do we notice what is most important or do we miss it? I t is possible that we may fail to say hello, please or thank you when such an utterance would be so important and valuable. We may fail to congratulate someone on something that is wonderful, a meal, a gift a kind word; something wonderful that has happened to them, passing an exam, engagement and marriage, a birth. Perhaps we fail to give a compliment or just do or say something nice for absolutely no reason at all. We all have so many parachute packers. If you don't already, go out there this year and recognise the people who pack your parachute and help you to negotiate the ups and downs of life! David Slater

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

A REAL EYECATCHER! This month’s linear ramble takes us past the famous landscape park at Croome, created in the mid eighteenth century by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, writes Jack B.Walker. While this ‘there and back’ route crosses National Trust land it is via public footpaths and no fee is payable. Park, with care, at the roadside near the impressive arched gateway at Croome Court. (National Trust members may use the car park, but please check winter opening hours). Look for a five bar gate on the left, and go

over the adjacent stile into a thicket. (1). Follow a concrete pathway which leads across some rough ground and eventually out into the wider parkland. To your right you can see the elegant Rotunda, one of many architectural curiosities in Croome Park (2). Keep straight ahead along the path along a broad ridge. To the right (west) there are sweeping views across the landscape park towards the Malverns. Croome River, an ornamental stretch of water, snakes across the

grassland and in the distance the classical facade and columns of the Temple Greenhouse may be seen. Below to your left you can see the government buildings and installations of the former RAF Defford airfield, an important station for radar research during the Second World War. Keep straight ahead and through a gate (3) into a small wood. Exit through a gate and walk across a field to a stile (4). Cross this and head towards a metal gate and into a meadow (5). Here the path descends and bears slightly left, down to a road. Turn right, (6) and walk on to Dunstall Common, carrying on until you reach what looks like a ruined building (7). This is Dunstall Castle - one of the three ‘eyecatchers’ outside Croome Park, designed to delight the onlookers eye from various points around the landscape park. This particularly structure was designed by Robert Adam in 1766 as ‘whimsical folly’ with elements of both a castle and a church included. Ironically, the folly was in real danger of collapse until being restored by the National Trust in 2010 and its towers are open at certain times of the year. The Panorama Tower - situated outside the NT grounds and the most distant of the ‘eyecatchers’ from Croome Court is also open to visitors from time to time. Retrace your steps across the common and park, back to the car.

The National Trust Café, housed in a restored wartime building, is outside the NT property, but non-members may not use the car park. Check website for café opening times.

On 25th and 26th April is a two day event featuring the opening rounds of both of the UK’s premier series the British and Midland Hill climb Championships. Saturday will also see competition classes for motorbikes. Owned by the Bugatti Owners’ Club, Prescott has staged hill climbs since the late 1930s, and each year there are six meetings in which cars

race against time up a purpose-built tarmac track. Various events can see purpose-built vehicles, as well as classic and vintage sports and racing cars - all trying to bet the clock.
