TEWKESBURY CATS PROTECTION IN DANGER The Tewkesbury branch of the charity Cats Protection is appealing for volunteers to step forward in order to prevent the local arm from closing down. The Tewkesbury and District Branch of Cats Protection is part of the charity’s nationwide network of 257 volunteer run branches and 30 Adoption Centres, which together help over 230,000 cats and kittens in the UK each year.

Tewkesbury is one of the oldest branches and may fold completely unless volunteers can be found to take over the
key committee positions of Homing Officer, Welfare Officer and Fundraising Officer. A Co-ordinator is also desperately needed to run the branch on a day to day basis. Over the years Cats Protection have found new homes for many felines in the Tewkesbury area, as well as staging fund raising events such as craft and gift fairs. BOWLING FOR HEROES Members of Tewkesbury Bowls Club took part in a twelve hour charity bowling marathon to help fund the charity Help for Heroes. The event was organised by Campbell McColl from Cheltenham Bowls Club and raised over £3000. Help for Heroes is a charity formed to support those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts. Bowling for the Tewkesbury club (pictured above) were Rob Arthur, Nick Freeman, Dave Hobbs, Charlie Silvester, Colin Campbell, and Rod Trower. The marathon took place at Mid Glos Bowls Club last month.

AIR AMBULANCE BENEFITS FROM FIREWORKS DISPLAY The Midlands Air Ambulance service has once again benefited from the annual fireworks spectacular held at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick. Last month Chris Warren and Martin Newell, who organise the event at their lakeside venue near Tewkesbury, handed over a cheque for £5460 which was raised at the November 2011 firework display. The Midlands Air Ambulance is the only Charity responsible for funding and operating three specially equipped helicopters which serve Gloucestershire and other parts of the West Midlands. It receives no government funding.
This year, Tewkesbury Rotary Club has organised another charity concert in partnership with with the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra. It will be held in the Abbey on Saturday 31st March, and proceeds will go towards the Town Mayor's Charity Fund plus Rotary Charities. The Rotary Club is delighted that Robert Hardy (pictured) has agreed to come and take part in the concert, as narrator for Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Other items will include Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream Overture and Incidental Music plus Beethoven's Symphony No 5. MARCH IS THE TIME TO PREPARE YOUR LAWN
It may seem odd to ask you to think about your lawn while the weather is still fairly cold but, if you want a beautiful lawn for the summer, then March is the time to do the work that’s necessary. Ultimately, you’ve still got a lawn that you’re unhappy with. Perhaps it’s time to call in the professionals. TEWKESBURY FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL LOOKS SET TO BRING TOWN ALIVE Tewkesbury Food and Drink Festival will return with a difference this year. The event, which is normally held on the Vineyards in Tewkesbury, looks set to be held at the heart of the town’s High Street. The move should bring benefits for the town, businesses and local economy as the high street will be transformed in to a thriving hub of foods, crafts and much more. The festival, which is now in its eighth year, is planned for the usual weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion, Cllr Dave Waters said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Tewkesbury. We will be working closely with Grenchurch Market Operators Ltd, local businesses and community organisations to provide the event in a location that has been suggested by the local community for many years. “It will bring huge benefits to the town centre with an increase in visitors and will also provide another way in which we can promote the profile of Tewkesbury as a traditional market town.” The event will see approximately 70 stall holders lining the centre of the high street, and will
include top producers and craftsmen ready to share tips and advice. There will be food and drink to sample and gifts to buy, as well as a wide range of entertainment activities for the whole family. The move has support from local business groups who believe the new location will add a new dimension to the event and provide benefits to local businesses. Spokesperson from the Chamber of Commerce, Shelby Powell said: “This is really positive news for the town and very welcome news. It’s an ideal opportunity for town centre businesses to get involved and showcase our local food and drink producers. Holding the two day event in such a central location should bring a real buzz and vibrancy into the town centre. “We are looking forward to working closely with the organisers and offering our support to ensure this year's event is a great success for Tewkesbury.” There are various ways in which businesses can get involved, whether this is through putting on

NEW BUS ARRIVES AFTER 14 YEARS Tewkesbury and District Wheelchair Bus Association has, after fourteen years of fund-raising, been able to purchase a new bus for transporting Tewkesbury residents to Lunch Clubs, supermarket shopping and sight-seeing trips to other areas. Many of the users rely on this service which is run by volunteers, as they are unable for various reasons to get out and about on their own, cannot use public transport or travel in cars. An official launch was held on Saturday 25th February, with Tewkesbury Town Mayor, Councillor Chuck Pavey cutting the ribbon. Principal volunteer driver Pete Aldrige is pictured above with the keys to the brand-new fifteen seater mini bus. The Tewkesbury and District Wheelchair Bus Association provides transport for older, frail or disabled people to keep mobile, specifically for occasional transport. There is no charge for the transport, but donations are gratefully received to keep the service running.

Tewkesbury Historical Society has just published its twenty first bulletin. The Bulletin contains stories, researched and written by members, about Viking-Saxon confrontation near Apperley in 1016; the stocking weaving industry in the 17th century; John Martin the reforming MP and Bertie Kirby the errand boy who became a Liverpool MP. There are also stories about a workhouse tailor; a tragic local family who found respectability via the railways and, more recently, the increasingly efficient Home Guard of World War II and the German POW who was imprisoned on the site of the Canterbury pub; memories of working in the local building trade after the war. The bulletin’s cover recalls the eccentric life of a couple in Walton Cardiff. Copies can be purchased from Alison's Bookshop and Music Room in Tewkesbury’s High Street.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
A BRACE OF BREDONS This easy to follow route, mainly over farmland, takes in three interesting villages and affords wideopen views towards the Malvern Hills on a clear day. The starting point is the village of Bredon, just over three miles from Tewkesbury and accessible by bus if you want to leave the car behind, and enjoy a drink at either of the two inns on the route. If you are driving, park by the riverside picnic area in Dock Lane, then walk along the road with the river to your left, passing the boat yards. Carry on up the slope and at the end of the lane, just by the drive way to Mill End farm, go through the metal gate on the left and go along a fenced path towards a small wood. (1). You can see the river and a pond below you. Walk through the wood, then emerge and follow the path straight ahead across the field. Go through a gap in some trees and down towards a railway embankment. Pass under the railway and across a small field to a stile. (2). Cross the busy B4080 with care and go up over the stile in the hedge directly opposite, across another small field and out on to a lane. Turn left and head towards the
village of Bredon’s Norton. As you reach the first few houses and the lane narrows, turn right after April Cottage (3) and follow the yellow direction arrow, over a stile and across a paddock. On reaching a small metal gate in a fence (4), go through and turn immediately right along the path, keeping the fence on your right. The lower slopes of Bredon Hill are now to your left. Go over another stile next to a five bar gate, and walk along the path with a hedge on your left.
Beggar Boys Reserve Cross a footbridge and keep following the path until it descends beside an embankment, and go over another small bridge. On your left now is Beggar Boys Nature Reserve. This haven for wildlife is closed to the

Follow the yellow waymarkers around the edge of the reserve, until you come to its entrance gate and information signs. Turn right (5) and walk up the edge of the field with the hedge on your right. At the end of the field pass some barns and turn left up a lane into Westmancote. At the T junction turn right and walk down through the village, passing a converted chapel. Take the footpath (right) across the edge of some open
ground - you will see a sports field over a fence ahead of you. (6). After a short distance take the path diagonally to your left, and go towards a kissing gate in a hedge between two telegraph poles. Go through the gate and along a narrow path. One interesting feature here is the miniature railway in the grounds of a house on the left - complete with advertising signs, a tiny station and bridge crossing the track.

STUDENTS WOW DRAGONS Year 10 students at Tewkesbury School teamed up to try and impress a panel of local business people in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style contest held last month. Team pitched ideas to the judges to try and win the ‘Dragon’s Den’ trophy for their house. Among the ventures put forward were a flexi screw driver, an app that was a school planner and a removable dry bag for a ruck sack. In the dragon’s chairs were Nigel Paton of G4S, Dale Wicks from Lloyds TSB, Tim Rigden of Wiseone Financial services, Neil Rayer of Gulliver’s Sports Travel, Abid Naser of Smartline International and Arif Khalfe from DF Legal. The pitch that impressed them most
was ‘Little Pet Heaven’ a burial casket for small pets like hamsters. Hannah Bridge, Coreen Chamberlain, Rhiannon Parry, Bethany Gardener came up with the idea which carried the trophy back to Elgar House. Feedback from the students involved confirmed they gained a great deal from the day and really valued the experience. Gary Watson, Head teacher at the school said “We are grateful for the time and support shown to us by local businesses who were the ‘Dragons’ for the day.
This event allowed our students to experience a unique situation and learn new skills required in the business world. “I am certain it will have a positive impact upon their future successes, both professionally and personally. “As a school, we hope to develop this event further in the future. New owners of Tewkesbury’s Jessop House Hotel, Steve and Chris Warbrick, are looking forward to a busy race week following a steady rise in the hotel’s reputation. Jessop House has risen up to number one among local hotels on Trip Advisor, the international website which bases its rankings on guest’s comments. Former Health and Safety Manager Steve hails from Liverpool, but his wife Chris has local connections as she was born in Gloucester. Chris worked as an enquiry
officer for Nottinghamshire Police, and it was from that county that the couple moved to take up ownership of the Jessop House. The hotel, in Church Street, has had something of a chequered past, having been featured on TV’s ‘The Hotel Inspector.’ Those days are long gone now as Steve and Chris have set about ren-
ovating the property to give it a fresh new look and offer guests good, affordable accommodation of a high standard. Reviews so far have been highly favourable: Chris and Steve both enjoy meeting people, and believe this is beginning to show. The aim is to have Jessop House fully refurbished for Race Week.

GLAD TO BE ALIVE AND STILL OPEN FOR BUSINESS “Following a freak accident and resulting devastating blaze, we have had an emotional and life changing time coming to terms with the loss of premises we have been in for fifteen years,” says local businessman Derek Sollars. Against all the odds, Derek's business, Sollars Kitchens, is now up and running again in a nearby unit at Highfield Business Park off the A38 south of Tewkesbury. “On the day we managed to put out the fire with our fire extinguishers downstairs, but we didn't realise it had taken hold in the roof insulation,” said Derek. “After an initial attempt to tackle the roof blaze, I was beaten back by flames and black smoke - and had to admit defeat. At that point we only had seconds to get out as the roof began to fall in around us.” The Sollars’ business has now moved to a unit on the same site - unit 1A - which they are sharing with previous neighbours, Fenster Commercial. Sadly, they were also affected as the fire spread. Derek is pleased with the progress made so far: “We are still fully open for business and have just received new sample displays of kitchen units and worktops. “These have come

It’s almost 28 years since Vale Wildlife Hospital took in the very first patient back in 1984, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue Centre. In that time we have had to deal with some very harrowing sights, but probably the most emotional are the animals that come in after being caught in snares. I am amazed at the number of people who naturally assume that things that can cause such suffering and massive injury are already illegal, but most of the snare injuries we see are from perfectly legal snares. Snares are an inhumane and indiscriminate method of so-called ‘pest control’ and as well as a huge number of wildlife casualties there are many documented cases of domestic pets being caught in them. The latest example of the horrors of snares dealt with at Vale was a badger that we were called to near Winchcombe on 31st

January. Although the snare was a legal type, it had been set illegally as the landowner had not given permission. They can only be set with the landowner’s permission and must be checked at least once in a 24 hour period. The badger that we were called to had obviously been trapped for several days and had excavated a deep trench around him in his desper-
ate attempts to escape. Sadly, the injuries he suffered were so severe that he had to be put to sleep. We have now set up a petition calling for the use of snares to be banned. PACKAGING RECYCLING IN TEWKESBURY Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth have started an initiative to reduce the amount of waste a little, and maybe save people a bit of money. Most of us have a little ‘stash’ of packaging materials which we’ve saved in case they might be needed; bubble wrap, jiffy bags, polystyrene ‘chips’, etc. Steve Goodchild, of Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth, said: “We either get too much over time and throw some away or we have too little and go and buy new. “We’re planning to solve all that by setting up a bank, where anyone can make a deposit of their surplus, or come and collect materials they might need. And it’s all completely free of charge.” Friends of the Earth
Packaging recycling in Tewkesbury have started the project in a small way, and the ‘exchange’ is open on Saturday mornings in the Town Hall (up the steps by reception) between 10.00am and 12.00noon. If it works out, they will expand to other
places, other times and other items. Steve Goodchild added: “We think that this will be ideal for people who buy or sell on e-bay and small businesses who trade by post.”

How New First Aid Guidelines Could Save Lives The British Heart Foundation recommends if you are not trained in mouth to mouth resuscitation, then just do chest compressions. Local first aid trainer, Mena Canning, says “This is very good advice and is also advocated by St John’s Ambulance and Red Cross. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all”. So if you have someone who has collapsed

and is not breathing, then in a very few minutes they are either going to die or suffer huge brain damage. So with straightforward training you can really make a difference. Mena says “30,000 people a year suffer heart attacks away from hospitals, and for every minute that they do not get some sort of help, their chance of survival goes down by 10%. So they need your help”. Although the BHF are saying “no kissing” if you are trained to do mouth to mouth resuscitation which BHF acknowledge as “the Gold Standard” then you will be increasing your confidence in what you are doing and you will be giving the casualty a much better chance of survival. We learn that, once again, the Borough Council is considering replacing Cascades. We can only hope that the motivation is to provide an even better facility! Cascades is now 50 years old and it was built by a combined effort of Town Council and the citizens of Tewkesbury who, reputedly, collected 5p a week house-to-house. The car park is now of a similar age. However, it hides a much more varied history of Tewkesbury beneath its tarmac surface. Between 1927 and 1967 the area was the site of George Hone’s very modern Cattle Market. Indeed, Cascades sits on the former parade ring. It is a reminder of the time when Tewkesbury was a very important market town, attracting farmers rather than housewives. This cattle market, however, replaced one of Tewkesbury’s most important industries – the manufacture of Fairground rides by Thomas Walker and Sons. Despite its importance, the photograph below is the only one that has come our way and it would be marvellous of anyone has any secreted away. Walker moved to this site from his Oldbury Road factory which burned down in 1908, thus attracting the photographers. There it remained until the business ceased in 1923. Spring Gardens will, no doubt, continue to metamorphose as the Town’s needs change – but we must be ensure that what replaces these three hallowed institutions will benefit the town in the long term, just as they did. We shall vigilantly wait and see!

CRICKET CLUB BACK IN TRAINING Tewkesbury Cricket Club are starting indoor junior cricket training at Tewkesbury School Sports Centre on Sunday 4th March. Training for the Under 12s and Under 13s will be from 3.00pm until 4.00pm and for the Under 11s from 4.00pm until 5.00pm. New players are welcome to come along and discover what the club has to offer. The club will be running junior sides at Under 11, 12, 13 and 15 level this year. Tewkesbury RFC travel to Bristol to take on Southmead for their first fixture of the month on Saturday 3rd March. They return to The Moats for home league action on Saturday 10th March, when they entertain St Mary’s Old Boys. Tewkesbury will be looking to overturn a defeat at their opponents ground earlier in the season. On Saturday 24th March Widden Old Boys are the visitors, and Tewkesbury hope to do ‘the double’ over the Gloucester outfit, where they were victorious back in December. The last game of the month will be at Bishopston’s ground in Bristol on Saturday 31st March.
