TEWKESBURY EMBRACES VOLUNTEERING Why volunteer? There are at least two very good reasons. Firstly it is good for the local economy and secondly it is good for individual health, writes Karen Brennan. On Sunday 5th and Monday 6th June, as part of National Volunteer Week, local groups will be at Tewkesbury Town Hall from 10.00am-4.00pm to showcase what their organisations do in the town and surrounding areas. This is as part of National Volunteer Week which provides an
opportunity to celebrate and thank volunteers for the time they give and the things they do.
As local authorities cut back on the services they supply volunteers
help to fill the gaps. For individuals volunteering can be a new lease of life, from rekindling old skills to run projects to combating loneliness or loss of confidence. We are emerging from a two year period of Covid which created a new army of volunteers that supported the NHS, assisted with the vaccination roll-out, delivered supplies to those shielding, worked from home making masks or found creative ways to raise money and moral. Many of those involved were furloughed at the time and have since returned to their jobs. Now the economy is faltering, new challenges are arising that, once again, we may all be able to play a part in to help address, large or small, as a new band of volunteers emerges.

by Colm Toibin Paperback £8.99 This is a very readable fictionalised biography of Thomas Mann, the German author of "A Death in Venice" together with many other early 20th century classics. Mann being the Magician of the title as he used to perform conjuring tricks for his many children when they were young, and he became known within the Mann household as "The Magician". Any reader does not need to be a fan of Mann's writings to enjoy this book or even to be aware of what he wrote. Mann lived to be 80 years old, witnessing and experiencing two World Wars. As I read this novel it reminded me in someway of William Boyd's totally fictionalised "Any Human Heart" where the reader is presented with an historical view of roughly the same time period with real characters, like the Windsors, enlightening the pages. Here Colm Toibin is using his obvious admiration for Thomas Mann, and comprehensive research to provide a view of the family life of Mann, and a window into the world events his predecessor lived through.

Thomas Mann was born in Lubeck in 1875, and whilst his family moved to Munich after his father's premature death, he always remembered his roots and based his first novel on his home city, and family background. We follow these early years as he passes through education and establishes himself as a writer, bearing witness to his family's change in circumstances. Toibin paints an excellent picture of the time period, and how the Manns adapt. He then introduces us into the privileged household of Katia Pringsheim. Thomas marries Katia and over the years they have six children. Katia's family has Jewish origins, even though they do not attend the synagogue. Her faith will have serious ramifications on the Mann family, the lives of their children, and eventually force the parents to resettle in America to avoid Nazi persecution. Thomas Mann though a
loving and faithful husband, does have a wandering eye for young males, these thoughts and views Toibin adroitly presents to the reader. Some of his children have their own sexual preferences which the author unfolds and as the family matures and travels, some of the off-spring become known in their own right. Thomas Mann himself was a very successful writer of both fiction and fact. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929; he and his family were famous, their notoriety spreading across continents. The reader of this novel bears witness to all these events; family holidays, books being written and published to great success, providing fame and wealth and all the pressures that this imposes. This book, very much like the author's earlier novel, "The Master" about Henry James, allows his reader to learn about Thomas Mann and his writings in a very informal way. The clearly defined years lead us through the decades of his life, Mann's writings and the family upheavals, tragedies as well as happiness, then fear and uncertainty. International recognition having both benefits and drawbacks. Mann is portrayed as a dedicated professional writer right up to his final years and his death in Switzerland in 1955. Gotherington’s villagers are proud to be taking part in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons and Associated Activities on Thursday 2nd June. The Gotherington Events Team has announced plans to light a beacon to mark the occasion, one of thousands being lit in the UK and the Commonwealth. It will form part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend. The beacon will be lit at Crane Hill, Woolstone, at 9.45pm - one of over 2,000 that charities, communities and faith groups all over the UK will be lighting at the same time. Music specially composed for the occasion will also be performed simultaneously across the Commonwealth.
VOLUNTEERING Volunteering can also health benefits. Age and brings with it declining physical and mental health and it may be prescribed that we volunteer in an activity that provides physical exercise, an opportunity to commune with nature or to sharpen our mental capacity. As an increasing number of people live alone it is a way to create support networks – both giving and receiving – which can come about as a by-product of volunteering. New friendships can be made and new skills can be mastered. Uniquely offered by the Battlefield Society are opportunities to paint banners, then climb long ladders to hang them and the Medieval Festival makes and repair costumes. But their other tasks, organising, fundraising, promoting, administrating, creating new ideas, researching, stewarding - the list is endless, are the same for all organisation putting on events. That includes The Big Weekend, Tewkesbury Lights, Classic Car Show and many more. There are organisa-
tions that work outside such as Tewkesbury Nature Reserve, Tewkesbury in Bloom, Litter-pickers, Friends of Victoria Gardens and many other smaller groups. Then there are the charity shops and museums offering indoor opportunities on front desks meeting with the public or behind the scenes projects and housekeeping tasks. Talks and walks are organised by the museums, the Historical Society, and Alleycats among others, all involving administrative work, and on the day, putting out chairs, introducing people – providing the tea and cake. We also have the environmental groups such as Repair Cafe, Friends of the Earth and Plastic-Free Tewkesbury all striving to raise awareness and help us to improve our lives and skills. Anne takes to the wing for Hope A very brave lady from Tewkesbury, Mrs Anne Trower, took to the skies above Gloucestershire last month to raise funds for the Hope Foundation. Watched by her family and friends, Anne did a wing walk from Rendcomb Aerodrome, near Cirencester, raising £1500 through sponsorship. A further £1000 donation was given by the Card Factory, where Anne works, making the total amount raised £2500. The Hope Foundation Charity supplies mobile Chemotherapy vans in Gloucestershire for people who cannot travel. TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL IS BACK! On the 9th and 10th of July 2022, join thousands of reenactors, traders, and entertainers from all over the world as they gather in Tewkesbury for Europe’s biggest Medieval Festival, which taking place on the original battlefield. It is a fantastic and unique day out with something for all the family- and admission is free! There are a multitude of things to see and do from the delights of the marketplace (gifts both ancient and modern) to have-a-go craft activities, food and drink, musical entertainment, falconry displays, parades, giants, stilt walkers, Green Men… and that’s before we talk about the history. A New Chair for Tewkesbury Museum Joanne Raywood stepped down as Tewkesbury Town Mayor on 9th May. After a few hours’ rest, she took over as Chair of Tewkesbury Museum on 10th May. A retired teacher, Joanne has been a trustee of the museum for three years, and has already been very busy both as our secretary and helping us manage our visitors, volunteers and seventeenth century building. We anticipate she will be even busier in future! Joanne takes over from well-known Tewkesbury resident Steve Goodchild, who has been Chair for five years and a mainstay of the museum for many more. Luckily for us, Steve is still heavily involved as a museum volunteer. Joanne was still Mayor when this photo was taken, showing her with Clive Montellier of Tewkesbury Battlefield Society at the opening of the museum’s refurbished Battle Room, to which the Battlefield Society made a very handsome donation. In early April Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club held our first face-to-face Annual General Meeting since the pandemic started, hopefully signalling a full return to normality. Chris Poulton, our newly elected Chairman takes over from Ken Whittaker who guided us through the pandemic. We are all looking forward to another successful year of interesting talks and occasional visits to places of interest. Our first talk after the AGM was by Eric Moore, describing a personal journey walking the Cotswold Way from Chipping Camden to Bath. Eric told us that following the death of a good friend a few years ago, he and a group of colleagues undertook an annual challenge in his memory, the first being climbing the Three Peaks and subsequently several significant physical challenges including climbing Kilimanjaro, all to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. So he was well qualified to tell us of the challenge of walking the full 102 miles length of the Cotswold Way. Most people do the walk in 7 to 10 days depending on how fit they are and how long they want to linger at the many picturesque villages, beautiful churches and notable

Emily Thomas cofounded the professional canine hydrotherapy centre called Canactive, with International Sleddog competitor Vickie Pullin in 2019. Based at P&D Engineering in Fleet Lane, just outside Bredon, the business uses an underwater treadmill to help restore canine fitness. “Vickie and I both have a background in working with sports dogs and experience in rehabilitation, fitness, conditioning and weight loss for canine companions,” said Emily. “We are registered members of the Institute of Canine Hydrotherapists. “One particular success story is Bella, a six year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. “I have been working together with her owners and a team of professionals to rehabilitate Bella since February 2021. “We are now beginning to see that Bella’s future will not be one where she is confined to
a wheelchair but one where she will be able to participate in an active lifestyle again.

A NEW GARDEN ON A BUDGET A few years ago when I was self-employed, a lady took me on to renovate and look after her much neglected, but once cherished garden, writes Tim Hoskins. throw them on the compost. Late spring is the perfect time of year to achieve this because if a plant has survived the winter and is likely to annoy you for the rest of the season, now is the time when you can tell.
The budget was tight and she’d spent most of her available funds on my fee. I used to take on one job a year, of roughly that type. Usually the scale of the plans matched the budget and the owners knew what they wanted. They didn’t mind buying stock in and didn’t mind paying me to work long hours to achieve their ideas. It was challenging as I’d often have to fit into professionally designed gardens that hadn’t succeeded or had been neglected. Long story short, I managed to deliver what the lady had asked for, but for no additional cost. The main factor in my favour was time. Whenever my other customers asked me to thin beds or remove plants, with their permission I relocated them to my new customers garden, rather than

Look out for plant swaps run by clubs or consider propagating if you have time as seeds and cuttings are cheap or free. Please never help yourself to cuttings though. A lot of gardeners will be happy to help, but it’s deeply irritating if plants are pillaged. Markets also often sell decent stock for low prices and since Covid ruined the market for nursery stock, supermarkets have had it available to them at very good prices and you can pick up some incredible plants for little money. Trainline Cottages and the importance of Naming Ceremonies History sometimes moves very swiftly, and these photos represent changes which have taken place during only the past 30 or so years, writes John Dixon. The Council depot was a remnant of Industrialised Tewkesbury from the Victorian period after the railway arrived in 1840. On the other side of the dilapidated buildings ran the single track of the railway between that and what is today the
Maltings, itself formerly a steam-powered factory. How appropriate it is, therefore, for the suite of three modern homes is to be known as “Trainline Cottages” (although it awaits its formal naming ceremony!)
This development followed on quickly from the demolition of Jesmond House Surgery, a GP Practice, opened on 1st Apr 1974 but which closed on 31st May 2016 after only forty two years practise. It gave way to the Devereux Medical Centre. Along with the former Watledge Surgery, it is now known as the Mythe Surgery. I hope members will remind us of why it is so named. I would also be grateful if older readers could inform me if there was previously a Jesmond House Surgery in the High Street and who were its GPs. Let us hope that “Trainline Cottages” has been named during the next thirty years – or we shall forget that there was a railway line which dominated that area. John Dixon

A WETLAND RESERVE A peaceful wetland area, The John Bennett Nature Reserve was created by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust a decade or so ago, in co-operation with the landowner, Natural England and the Environment Agency, writes Jack B. Walker. Unlike the neighbouring, Gwen Fitch Reserve, the John Bennett Nature Reserve has public access, allowing walkers and ornithologists to observe a wide range of birds in the wetlands.A private reserve, it is sometimes closed in winter months. But now that the lighter evenings are with us, this walk makes a pleasant stroll. Our walk starts from the village of Great Comberton and follows part of the 88 mile long Shakespeare’s Avon Way. This traces the river from its source to where it joins the Severn at Tewkesbury. There is no off-road parking in Great Comberton, so please park with care and respect to residents in the village street. It is probably less intrusive to park at the north end of the village, near the war memorial. From here, walk back up through this lovely
Berwick Brook, next to the entrance to the reserve
village, and just before Waterbrook House, look for the Public Footpath sign to Nafford (1). The route is way marked with the ‘Shakespeare’s Avon Way’ logos as well as yellow arrows. Bear right down the path and follow the arrows across the fields for about three quarters of a mile, until you meet the road at Nafford (2). Walk past Nafford House and at the drive turn right (3) and follow the path down between the fences to emerge on
to the river bank. Go over the bridge on top of the weir (4) and cross Nafford Lock by the swing bridge, then follow the path across the small island. Cross the bridge over the second weir, (5) where the waters rush impressively beneath you. This is a popular spot for anglers and canoeists. Bear left along the path until you reach a gate on your right, and the information boards about the John Bennett Nature Reserve (6).
Follow the permissive path as directed, to reach the observation hide overlooking the wetland. Access to the hide is only available by contacting the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust in advance. As this is a ‘there and back’ walk, simply retrace your footsteps from this point. When you return to Nafford Lock, note the wind-powered water pumps in the area. These are used to provide water for the wetland habitat. The two larger ones, closest to the weirs, feed the Gwen Fitch nature reserve (established in 2001) to which there is no public access. As you walk back from Nafford to Great Comberton, away to your right is the scarp side of Bredon Hill, dominated by Battens Wood. PLEASE NOTE: this walk should not be attempted when the river is in flood.

Tewkesbury Foodbank Seeks New Volunteer Project Manager Having served as a volunteer at the Foodbank since it opened nine years ago, the present Voluntary Project Manager plans to retire from her position shortly. She has held this position for five years, a period of ever increasing demand for Foodbank services locally and nationally. The Chair of Trustees, Rev Carrie Seaton, who also volunteers at the Church Street Centre, says “we are looking to recruit a person of Marion’s commitment, passion and leadership qualities to step in to her shoes”. The Project Manager is responsible to the Board of Trustees for leading the team of volunteers who carry out our mission of providing food aid to those in crisis in our community on a weekly basis, and for planning and resourcing the Foodbank for future sustainability. The voluntary commitment is around 15 hours per week. As with all Foodbanks in the Trussell Trust network, we work in accordance with their guidelines and Christian ethos. We were introduced to the world of television quizzes with our speaker this month. Rob Hemmings recalled all his experiences on various quiz shows, it was quite an eyeopener as to what goes on, but he did at least make a Mastermind semi-final. WI’s have always been known for campaigning on important issues, and this year is no different. We had a very lively and emotional discussion about calling on the government to provide funding into the female presentation of ASD and ADHD. A member read a very personal poem highlighting the problems faced and why it is so important for them to get help as soon as possible. Our next meeting will be our Platinum Jubilee Tea Party, on the June 8th, for our July meeting we will be having a talk about Northern Cyprus. We are a very friendly group, and we would love to welcome you to our meetings which take place on the second Wednesday of every month at 2pm at the Wheatpieces Community Centre. A new look for the New Plough A pub that has been closed for nearly three years is set to reopen. Theoc House in Barton Street, Tewkesbury, is due to become The New Plough. New owner RP Hospitality Group, fronted by businessman and publican Ram Parmar, plans to give the building a fresh start. The group says it will refurbish the premises and make it a vibrant freehouse with traditional values. The plan is to open it 30th May. It will show live sport, stage weekly entertainment and serve drinks such as beers, real ales and gins. Ram, who operates another pub in Rugby The Clifton Inn said: “We are really looking forward to opening the venue as The New Plough, as it was such a shame to see this beautiful building going to waste. We hope to breathe new life into the community of Tewkesbury by offering pool, darts, karaoke and
lots of live entertainment plus much more. “We are also thrilled that our new venture will be able to provide a number of new jobs to the town.” He hopes to get the pub open next month and then open its kitchen in the summer. Joining him in run-
ning the venue will be his partner Stephanie Morgan, while they build a team of new staff. He added: “Rest assured, the locally famous function room is being lovingly refreshed and will be available to hire for all your special occasions in due course.”

OUR ALLEYWAYS with Steve Goodchild Writing in 1905, Alley historian John Rogers, said of this Barton Street alley: ‘Named after Mr George Davis who owned the front street house on the right-hand side of the alley. He was highly respected and ranked amongst the well-todo inhabitants of the town. He was a pig dealer and bacon curer. He sold black puddings, bacon and chitterlings. In those old times almost everyone had a nickname and Mr Davies was called ‘Chitterlings George’. Chitterlings were the food of the very poor, effectively sausages without the filling. George Davis had died in December 1845, aged 79, when John Rogers was 37. The naming of the alley breaks the rule that alleys are named after their front house, because the alley is not behind the house on the right-hand side, it’s behind No 30, on the left-hand side, a smaller building and probably with a less colourful resident. The 1841 census shows thirteen cottages in this small alley, with almost fifty residents. By 1861, there were just six occupied cottages and John Rogers reports four in 1905. The buildings may have been put to other uses, of course but some could have been demolished. In an auction in 1861, a cottage with garden in Davis’ Alley was sold to Mr Pitman for £80. In the same

sale a cottage in Double Alley sold for £21. A considerable difference! A similarly-described cottage sold in 1881 had a shed and WC in its garden. A far higher standard than was the norm in alleys. There were small, ‘one up, one down’ cot-
disturbed in 1960. The Post Office was planning to move to a new building and discussion with the Borough Council had settled on all the land between Charlewood’s Alley and Davis’ Alley as suitable. Clearance Orders for the area

This, unsurprisingly, led to strong complaints about noise and disturbance. In about 1990 the yard was replaced by a housing development, named Hopton Court, remembering the previous occupiers of the site. The Hopton Court buildings follow the line of the alley, though
with a very different architectural style to their predecessors, bringing people and life back and creating a hybrid alley,
with an harmonious mix of old and new. If only there were a solution to the storage of wheelie bins, though!

were prepared, which included the cottages in the alley, but after four years negotiation the Post Office baulked at being involved in a compulsory purchase and pulled out of the deal. The Council thought this an important area for development, however, and pressed on with their plans to acquire it, demolish the existing buildings and manage its redevelopment. Someone else had also been working on plans for the area. For many years, Sidney Hopton, who had a coal and haulage business in East Street, had been opportunistically buying up properties and leaving them empty when tenants left. He wasn’t at all happy with the compulsory purchase plan, and submitted his own application to extend his yard and to create a new row of shops in Barton Street. This conflict led to a planning enquiry, with Mr Hopton objecting to the compulsory purchase of his property and promoting his own plans. The inspector found for the Council, who compulsorily purchased all the Barton Street properties which were emptied. In the absence of a deal with the Post Office, they eventually agreed to sell the site to the County Council for a new Police Station. This had no effect on Davis Alley, though, as the Police Station didn’t need the demolition of 29 and 30 Barton Street. The two Davis’ Alley cottages owned by the Borough Council, numbers 1 and 2, were also spared demolition and were eventually incorporated into the restaurant at No 29, now the ‘Balti Palace’ Mr Hopton resorted

The expedition entails planning and executing an overnight stay within the countryside, following meticulous planned routes in order to reach a final destination. UNLOCKING THE SEVERN - FLYING THE FLAG FOR THE AMAZING MAY FISH MIGRATION This May, for the first time in nearly 180 years, the UK’s longest river has been unlocked for the epic spawning migration of an endangered fish, the twaite shad. An ambitious conservation project has unlocked the length of the River Severn, reconnecting ancient spawning

Four huge new fish passes now provide a route around weirs that have thwarted fish migrating upriver since Victorian Times. Shad normally visit the river in May, they were known locally as May Fish. This year, on 1st May, a commemorative flag featuring May Fish designed by local children, was raised at locations along the River Severn including Tewkesbury Marina. The eye-catching flag design features the winning artwork of local children from over 1000 entries inspired by the plight of this fish and the conservation project that has worked to restore the river to them. The new flag brings
attention to the amazing may fish migration that is largely hidden from view; the fish journey from the sea into fresh water and would then naturally travel vast distances up the river to spawn. But navigation weirs built in the mid 1840’s to create more reliable passage for deeper barges carrying industrial goods blocked their path. Earlier this year however, the Unlocking the Severn project completed the final fish pass alongside four big weirs between Worcester and Stourport. This series of fish passes restores access to shad spawning grounds upriver and improves river connectivity for all the fish and the overall health of the
In Tewkesbury, Citizen Scientists are now busy making sample counts of shad passing upstream via the notch in the Upper Lode Weir, on their way towards the larger weirs with their new fish passes further upstream. Monitoring scientists have also been catching individual shad in the river at Tewkesbury to fit them with tiny acoustic tags. This allows the individual fish’s movements to be tracked and recorded so that the project can monitor how the fish are using the new fish passes and how they begin to use the newly spawning restored habitat. BELLS RING OUT FOR JUBILEE The bells at Tewkesbury Abbey will ring out on Friday 3rd June between 11:00 and 12:00 to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee. Bells in the nearby villages will also be rung in celebration during the jubilee weekend.

FOODBANK THANKS COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT Tewkesbury Foodbank has extended heartfelt thanks to all the companies, organisations and individuals who have supported it over the past year. This has often been through food collections, or through regular money donations. End of year figures show that a total of 2246 clients used the facility in 2021/2022, compared to 2400 for the previous period. The Trussell Trust, which runs Foodbanks Nationwide, says that 2020/21’s figures were impacted by Covid, and a clearer picture is represented by 2019/2020, when 1680 clients were catered for. In Tewkesbury’s case this shows a different picture - and an increase of 33.69% in clients receiving food last year. Tewkesbury Foodbank is also partnered with the Fuel Bank Foundation which allows us in certain circumstances to help clients in fuel crisis with their utility bills. A spokesperson for the Foodbank said: “As with the previous year we have been able to partly fund this use funding which we received from Tewkesbury Borough Council who in turn had received Government Funding through the household Support Fund.” As always, donations to the Foodbank are always welcome: call 01684 296824 or drop in at 76 Church Street if you would like to help in any way. Hillworth Farm, at Yardbridge, Longdon near Tewkesbury (GL20 6AX) will host the festival from Thurs 28th-Sun 31st July, with free camping available. As well as live music from some of Britain’s favourite artists and leading tribute acts, there will be fairground rides, face painting, traders/stalls, and a food market Daniel Pardoe set up APP-FEST in 2008, under the original name Farmers Arms Apperley Festival, which was located in a small rural village near Tewkesbury It was here, when Daniel had the privilege of being the pub’s landlord for over ten years, where the event was hosted in the pub’s large gardens and adjacent farmers’ fields. It was during the first year that locals from the village suggested Daniel changed the name to APP-FEST and so the charity, community festival was born. Daniel envisaged APP-FEST as a way to bring together the local communities and raise money for local and national charities through a love of great
