A FREE CONCERT TO LAUNCH A NEW BOOK Popular local Ska-punk band Spunge are helping to launch a book celebrating the inspirational life of BMX legend Stephen Murray at Croft Farm in Bredon’s Hardwick next month. Stephen’s autobiography, Staying Strong, is a raw, inspirational story that has been written with the guidance of his close friend and wellknown local businessman Lee Martin, from Westmancote. Stephen and Lee were at school together at Prince Henry’s High in Evesham. Ten years ago, at the AST Dew Tour BMX Dirt Finals in Baltimore, Stephen took a catastrophic fall attempting a double backflip on the final jump in the dirt section. He received careerending injuries to his spinal cord and vertebrae and is paralyzed below the shoulders. Stephen’s story is a rollercoaster of emotions – it doesn’t have the ultimate happy ending whereby he is now able to walk; he is still paralysed. What it does detail

Lee Martin, who has helped BMX star Stephen Murray to produce a book about his remarkable life is how to keep positive in the face of adversity, the power of staying mentally strong, living for your children and, ultimately, hope. Stephen’s book deals with some very dark moments, the challenges faced every day as a father going through a divorce, a custody battle and whether he will ever ride a bike again.
Stephen may have lost the use of his body but he has never lost his love or passion for BMX. It’s this passion that pushes him through every day. The book will be published later this month, and the launch concert at Lakeside Café Bar, Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, will take place on Sunday 9th July at
7.30pm. Popular local band Spunge will headline the event. Spunge are a SkaPunk band from Tewkesbury with a national and international following. As well as playing their own headline shows and festivals all over the UK, they have supported American bands including Green Day and Dropkick Murphys. Admission to the Lakeside Café Bar event is free, but registration in advance is essential via the band’s website spunge.co.uk/stayingstrong

A book which recounts vividly two families experiences during the Cultural Revolution in China; yet music is also at the core of this novel. At it's heart is the oppression Mao enforced on the Chinese people through the 1950s, and 60s, and chronicling events up to Tiananmen Square. The story starts gently in Vancouver, around 1990, where the narrator Marie, also known by her Chinese name Liling, lives with her widowed mother. Her father had disappeared some years earlier. They are briefly joined in Canada by a young relative Ai Ming who has fled China after the Tiananmen massacre. The families are interlinked, Ai Ming's father, named Sparrow, was an accomplished classical composer but he was repressed by the authorities. He taught at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where Marie's father a talented concert pianist studied alongside a younger cousin Zhuli, a violinist. While music filters through the pages of the book this tranquillity is disturbed by the brutality of the Revolution and restrictions enforced on the people. The decades of the book, centred firmly in China, provide memorable, well crafted characters. There is Zhuli's mother and father, who are both sent to labour

As a refresher course of Chinese history this novel is worthy of reading, but it is so much more with the intermix of family stories creating an intriguing web which gently unfolds as the pages turn. The hardships they all suffer, in part off set by moments of love and friendship. Politics play across every chapter, softened by musical accompaniment. This is a good summer read, something to sit down and enjoy. It was the favourite for last year's Man Booker prize although alas, and strangely, it failed to win. Now it has justifiably been nominated for other prizes including the Bailey's. Highly recommended by several of our customers. Selected by: Ian B. COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD FOR BRIAN Tewkesbury Town Council hands out an annual community service award to recognise outstanding community work, writes Shelby Powell. This years award goes to Brian Reeve. Readers may know Brian in connection with his family run business, the Handyman Centre, but as Brian is a modest chap few of know about the extent of his extraordinary record of public service for the town. John Badham, Chair of Tewkesbury in Bloom, nominated Brian for the award. This is what John has to say about our local handyman hero: “Brian Reeve was a leading member of a small group who decided to set up Tewkesbury in Bloom nearly thirty years ago. “In those early days he got up most mornings at 5.30 am to water endless hanging baskets in the town centre. “Most of the nitty-

This story took is said to have taken place sometime ago but is just as relevant today as it was then and will be in years to come, writes David Slater.

THROW YOUR STARS WISELY AND WELL Before he actually sat down to write he would give himself some thinking time so would go for a leisurely walk along the beach. On this one particular day as he was walking he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. He liked the idea. It suited his own way of thinking and behaving. He walked faster and faster to catch up. The young man continued his actions. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man but the young man wasn't dancing. He was actually reaching down to the shore and was picking up something then gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?” The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” “Oh, right! Well my next question is going to be an obvious one. I have to ask you why are
you throwing starfish in the ocean?” “The sun is up and shining warmly, and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in the heat will cause them to dry out and the lack of water will kill them.” “But, young man, don't you realise that there are miles and miles of beach, and thousands of starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference! What you are doing just does not make sense to me.” The young man listened politely. He totally ignored the writer and carried on doing what he had been doing for so long that morning. He bent down and he picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the waves and said, “Well, it made a difference for that one, didn't it?” Just think about it for a moment. There is something very special in each and every one of us. Each one of us has been gifted with the ability to make a difference and to be a difference. If we can become aware of that gift, we
gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish. If we throw our stars
wisely and well, the world as well as ourselves will be blessed. What we choose to do CAN actually make a difference. David Slater

New twinning committee re-enforcing links
TEWKESBURY BLINDS & CURTAINS
It is thirty five years since the Tewkesbury District Twinning Association established a relationship with the Miesbach in Germany. To mark the occasion, a new committee is seeking to strengthen links between the two towns. Miesbach, which is in Bavaria, and Tewkesbury are both similar in terms of geographical size and population. Since exchange visits first took place in 1982, many families and groups have forged lasting friendships through the twinning association (TDTA). Tewkesbury Town Band, Firemen, Morris dancers, scouts, choirs and schools have all been involved in exchange visits. TDTA chairman Chris Lodwig and three committee members have just returned from a six day visit to Miesbach. They were joined on the visit by twenty six farmers, all members of the Alderton and Ashchurch Agricultural Discussion Group, who were celebrating their

Highlights of the trip included a tour of Miesbach’s new cattle market, visits to farms and a co-operative dairy, nearby Munich and a vocational agricultural school. They also witnessed the traditional Maypole ceremony. Chairman Chris Lodwig said: “After a few quiet years, the visit helped to improve
TDTA’s links with Miesbach.” The TDTA were at the Big Weekend last month, encouraging local people to become more involved with cultural, educational and social exchanges. “We have young people looking for exchange visits as well,” said Chris. Underneath the arches When local painter and decorator Mark Thompson spotted that the lettering on the metal arches at the entrance to Victoria Gardens were looking tired and jaded he sprang into action, writes Shelby Powell. Mark(pictured left) has re-painted the golden lettering and brought the magnificent arches back to their former glory at this popular riverside beauty spot in town. The arches were funded by local residents, businesses and visitors to the park as part of a project by the Friends of Victoria Pleasure Gardens to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen. Local residents are invited by the volunteers to an Open Day on Sunday 2nd July at the park starting at 2pm when music, tea and ice cream on the lawns will be the order of the day. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and stay for a while or just walk through and take in the views.

The club raised an outstanding £1,362.21 for the charity which was presented at a training session. Students aged from four upwards participated in a none stop three hour training session which comprised of a gruelling routine of kicking techniques, punching techniques, hanging bag work, Thai pad work, sparring, selfdefence, set sparring and finally destruction (board and tile breaking). Everyone, even the younger members broke at least one board and the adults finished off

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Car parks may appear boring and utilitarian slabs of tarmac – but beneath the surface there is often a fascinating story to tell, writes John Dixon. Gloucester Road Coach and Car Park is no exception. Older people probably still call it Wyatt’s Meadow. Until 1884 it was part of the privately owned Great Abbey Estate until it was bought for £1m in modern values with 75% being raised by public subscription. The three acre Meadow was bought by the Council in 1905 for £275 (£27,100 today). In 1921 Cllr. Bill Walkley, always on the side of the poor, wanted to obtain a government loan to level the meadow for a car park to provide work for the unemployed – this scheme envisaged an ash surface. By this time the town was encroaching because of the appearance of the motor car and it is not surprising that the council leased part of it to Cllr. Abel Jordan for his garage – the one at which Peter Finnigan’s father worked. It was always controversial! By 1928 the council wanted him to forego his lease – actually Cllr. Jordan had no tenancy agreement. Dubbed the “Second Battle of Tewkesbury” in 1931, it was fought to take it from him and be rid of this ‘hideous structure.’ It was a very personal and bitter battle across the council chamber between Jordan’s “silent contempt” and heavy weights such as Mayor Gaze and Rev. H G Brown. Eventually a compromise was reached by letting Jordan put petrol pumps on the platform of the old station in the High Street - and in 1933 the unemployed at last built the car park. The debate moved on towards the cost of a tarmac surface, planting flowers and whether or not to surround it with “arty” iron railings, hated by author John Moore. The author was defied – but they were ripped out for scrap in World War II. I am sure John Moore also would have surely regretted the Council having to replace the original but flood damaged ‘Art Deco’ toilets in 2011.

Christina Kulukundis back at the Old Baptist Chapel Alt-country singer songwriter Christina Kulukundis will be back at the Old Baptist Chapel in July, following a sell-out gig in the town last month. Christina, who lives near Tewkesbury, said: “Our last show at the Old Baptist Chapel was a great success! “We had a sell-out crowd, and a terrific atmosphere. The Chapel looked wonderful and was full of people on both levels. “Lots of people brought their children too as it was a great opportunity to expose them to live music in a safe and beautiful setting.” Christina’s music is folk-country with an impressive line-up of musicians; Christina Kulukundis (vocals), Ben Church (guitar, banjo), Pete Bryden (bass), Pete Miln (Violin), Rob Peate (Piano) and Max Roache (Drums and percussion). Christina Kulukundis is half English and half Greek, and although she was born and raised in London, she spent summers at her grandparents place in Upstate New York, a mountainous region of the East Coast of America. It was here the country sound started to seep in. She came back to the UK in 2006, and released her first record to critical claim. It got radio play on Radio 2 and Radio 4 plays and achieved a coveted four stars from Mojo Magazine. The album was also BBC Radio Scotland’s Record of the Week, followed by a live spot on BBC radio’s Loose Ends. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR TEWKESBURY CHRISTIAN AID LUNCHES For over forty years volunteers have run monthly Christian Aid lunches at Tewkesbury Methodist Hall. The lunches consist of homemade soup, occasional puddings, tea or coffee - and on average raise about £2000 per year for Christian Aid funds. The current team have decided to call it a day and unless new volunteers are found the lunches will not restart as usual in October. The Theme of this years popular street fair will be remembering the floods of 2007 and celebrates the strong, coming together and spirit that pulled the community together. TEWKESBURY SCHOOL RAISES FUNDS FOR WORTHY CAUSE Juliet Sirrell, Estates Assistant, at Tewkesbury School organised a bingo evening at the School in early May. Juliet generously donated the proceeds to Tewkesbury VIPs, the monthly social club for the elderly visually impaired. School colleague, Kirsty Vallender stepped in as the caller, at the last minute, as the scheduled caller had cried off. Kirsty called the numbers seamlessly making the evening an enjoyable and great success. Students, Dan Brittain and Dan Blackburn worked hard to make the event swing.
Juliet is a regular supporter at the Tewkesbury VIPs meetings at the Baptist Church and brings along student master baker Dan Brittain with his delicious home made cakes. The proceeds from the event will be well used to help pay for the TVIPs to enjoy a cream tea ride on board the
Gloucestershire and Warwickshire steam railway from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse. Many of the TVIP members cannot leave their homes without the support of a volunteer. If you know of anyone who is losing their sight and is possibly lonely and socially isolated or just someone that would

The 2016/17 season proved to be a resounding success for the team reaching a cup final in their first season together and winning Tewkesbury Town Colts junior team of the year at the club’s end of season awards held at Tewkesbury School on the 20th May. Having played some fantastic football throughout the season the girls are now eagerly looking to build on positively gained experiences. To mark 50 years since the death of Gloucestershire writer, John Moore, as well as 110 years since his birth in Tewkesbury, the museum will be holding two talks on Saturday 10th June. Beauty in Ugliness – John Moore’s Tewkesbury by Simon Lawton, Curator, John Moore Museum John Moore’s novel, Portrait of Elmbury, published in 1945, was a thinly disguised homage to Tewkesbury in the inter-war years and this setting is fundamental to some of his best loved books. Many of his characters were based on real people who lived in the town and it became an all-consuming passion for people to try and tell the fact from the fiction. In this talk, John Moore Museum Curator, Simon Lawton, will be exploring the rich literary creation that is John Moore’s beloved town. Forever bound to the Place – Tewkesbury’s John Moore, an historical perspective by John Dixon, President, Tewkesbury Historical Society “Every time I re-read the works of John Moore, the more I appreciate him and want to know more about his life and thinking.” In his talk, John Dixon, will explore the history of the Moore family and the characteristics which impacted upon John. He will look more deeply into his career and how it led to the campaign to preserve the Town’s heritage as his health deteriorated. “There is the fascination of John Moore the Historian – always worried about embarrassing his mother, it is intriguing to know just what information he imparts about Tewkesbury is reliable. A GREAT, BIG ONE Tewkesbury celebrated the Annual Big Weekend event in May, with many local groups taking part in activities to entertain the crowds. It was heartening to see friends and families enjoying their town together and we have put together a few photographs and include a resume that sums up the feel of the event from one of the main organisers, Carol Crilly. The sun came out for us, the parade was enhanced by the presence of the Ole Samba Band and the participants made such a sterling effort and looked
fantastic! The town had a great feel about and everyone seemed to be smiling. The Ukulele Orchestra never lets us down with there busking, all of the
crowd were singing along and tapping their feet. The river was alive with demonstrations and fairground attractions but I think the favourite,
new for this year, were The Newfoundland Rescue Dogs, jumping into the river and showing us what ‘clever’ dogs they are. By Carol Crilly.

OVER 100 COMPETE IN SPRING TRIATHLON There was a fantastic atmosphere at the town’s Leisure Centre last month, when it hosted Tewkesbury Triathlon Club’s Spring Sprint event. This was the first triathlon held at the venue, with over one hundred competitors experiencing the new pool facilities, cycling and running courses. The club raised an outstanding £1,362.21 for the charity which was
presented at a training session. Students aged from
four upwards participated in a none stop three hour training session which comprised of a gruelling routine of kicking techniques, punching techniques, hanging bag work, Thai pad
work, sparring, selfdefence, set sparring and finally destruction (board and tile breaking). Everyone, even the younger members broke at least one board and the adults finished off
the day by breaking 1 inch pieces of wood and house bricks with their bare hands and feet. Anyone wishing to join the club is invited to

FROM THE OTHER SIDE May’s ‘Rambling Around’ took us to visit the John Bennett Nature Reserve, writes Jack Walker. This month’s route approaches nearby Nafford Lock from the other direction, with a lovely stroll along the River Avon from the car park by Eckington Bridge and through the attractive village of Birlingham. This is a ‘there and back again’ walk, which also offers an opportunity to call for a pint or a bite to eat at a classic country pub. The starting point is Eckington Wharf Car Park (on the B4080) where there is also a riverside picnic area. Leave the car park and cross the red sandstone Eckington bridge, and go through a kissing
gate on the right (1). You are now on common land known as Asham Meadow; the most picturesque route is to follow the path along the river until you come to a bend known as the Swan’s Neck. As the river loops round, look for a lane at the edge of some trees (2) and turn right along it. The lane bears left and reaches a T junction
(3). Turn right and follow the lane until it passes some houses on the right and emerges on to a road in the village of Birlingham. Turn right (4) and follow the lane as it wanders around a paddock and meets some houses. Turn right (5) into Grange Road and continue to the junction with Berwick Lane (6). Bear right along the lane,
passing a farm on your right. Eventually the lane becomes a rough track, which is susceptible to flooding after heavy rain. At the end of the lane you will reach a small fishermen’s car park, and the entrance to the Gwen Finch Nature Reserve (7). This is now a haven for wildlife, (not normally open to the Distance: approx. 4 miles, mostly flat. Car Parking: free car park at Eckington Wharf. Refreshments: The Swan Inn, Birlingham. lock and then follow the footpath over another weir and up the bank towards the road (V). You can see the scrapes and reed beds opposite you (even better if you have remembered to bring binoculars!). Retrace your steps to Birlingham: on reaching Asham Meadow there is a shorter route diagonally across the centre of the field which you can take if you wish. To visit the Swan Inn at Birlingham, which serves good food and has a very pleasant garden, when you get back to point (4) walk straight up the road towards the church. Families from Tewkesbury and beyond who have suffered the pain of baby loss at any stage of pregnancy, birth or in infancy are invited to join a special service in Tewkesbury Abbey next month. On Saturday 1st July a ‘Saying Goodbye’ service will be taking place at 6.00pm in Tewkesbury Abbey. This is the 87th service that the Mariposa Trust charity has held since September 2012, and will be one of over twenty taking place this year. These uplifting and moving services - filled with music, poems, acts of remembrance and more - have been attended by thousands of people, who have found healing and solace by attending. The Mariposa Trust
provides support globally to tens of thousands of people each week who have experienced or been affected by baby loss. The charity’s primary division ‘Saying Goodbye’ provides comprehensive support solutions including the services of remembrance. SEVERN UNIT PLAYS IMPORTANT PART AT TBW Once again Severn Unit MVS was kept busy throughout TBW fulfilling the important role of providing safety boat cover and controlling the river traffic over the two days. MUD AND PROSSECO Local Gym owner Chris Warren has written in and tells us of the challenges he and the Gym and Tonic team met and overcame at the worlds biggest Mud Run. Last weekend Team Gym & Tonic completed one of the worlds largest mud obstacle course. The Rat Race Dirty Weekend at Burghley was a 20 mile mud run with 200 obstacles consisting of water cross-
ings, cargo nets, slides, space hoppers, worlds longest monkey bars (about 300 feet) and much much more. The 20 mile course took 7 hours to complete even though we ran pretty much most of it
there were a few queues at some of the obstacles which slowed us down. After the run 4 of us jumped in a hot tub and had glass of prosecco whilst listening to red hot chilli pipers (tribute band) then headed back
to our tent, got changed and returned to the main tent to listen to the Hoosiers then raved to Judge Jules. By Chris Warren.

THE HISTORY OF WALL’S COURT One of the best loved alleys in Tewkesbury, Wall’s Court runs from the High St, by the Nottingham Arms, to Oldbury Road. Mr Wall was a tailor, a ‘respectable man’, who occupied the front house two hundred years ago. As the ‘Court’ name implies, this alley had no right of passage when it was given its name. Its route to Oldbury Road doesn’t follow the line of the historic plot, though. It has a kink, crossing to the opposite edge of the plot, where the path sits alongside a now disappeared alley; Heath’s Alley, once entered by the doorway alongside 131 High Street. Another idiosyncrasy of the court is that the houses were on both sides. The norm is that alley cottages are behind the ‘front house’, with a blank wall on the other side. These two features suggest that the plots behind 129 (the Nottingham Arms) and 130 were in common ownership. The double plot at the Oldbury Road contained a building at the end of the nineteenth century, and this is likely to have been the case for many years before this. In 1875, Thomas Walker, famed for fair-
ground rides, bought this area, described as a ‘Warehouse and yard ‘, together with five adjacent cottages in Bleach Yard, from Charles Bolton Edgecombe, for £460. This was his first venture, followed in 1882 by expansion into the old silk mill, standing behind the Wheatsheaf, more or less where the Ambulance Station now sits. Walls Court contained six cottages, most of which were behind the Nottingham Arms. Eventually, with Council pressure, a row of four toilets was established. In1890, Mr Morgan complained about the state of the paving, and the Council offered to repave it ‘if the owners would ‘throw it open to the public and abandon their claim to keep it as a private court’. They agreed, it was paved with blue bricks and became a right of way. The cottages certainly weren’t palaces. In 1926,
Mr Badham bought two for £100. In 1938, an order to demolish five houses was sought and approved. Things moved slowly, though, and in 1940 the houses were reprieved and reconditioned to provide urgently-needed wartime accommodation. This was a temporary measure, though, and the clearance was eventually carried out, with the exception of two which were incorporated into the Nottingham Arms. On the other side of the court was a different class of house; a large fifteenth century timberframed building. This was a high status house, suitable for a private Court, but out of place in an Alley. The garden had been partially developed in the twentieth century, with a building for Crouch’s bakery. This house fell into the hands of Whitbread Flowers brewery, who used it as a bottle store for the Nottingham arms
and completely neglected its maintenance. In 1970 their architect, Mr Lachlan, declared it unsafe and uneconomic to repair. They applied to the Council for consent to demolish it, which was challenged strongly by the Civic Society. After two failed planning applications Whitbread Flowers gifted the building to Gem Town (Tewkesbury), a charity established to restore local historic buildings. Gem Town also acquired the bakery, and after a restoration which took ten years the whole site was sold for residential use. The house is now called the ‘Tailor’s House’, harking back to Mr Wall’s profession. Later, during an upgrade, the Nottingham Arms was extended to occupy the space which was once cottages. When manufacturing finally left the space beyond the ‘kink’, more cottages were built, to repopulate the court.

PLENTY IS HAPPENING FOR LOCAL DANCE SCHOOL Amy Flynn has written in with news of activities taking place soon for her School of Dance. Amy Flynn school of dance is now 4 years old and grown with lots on offer. We have a variety if classes such as ballet, tap, modern, jazz, contemporary and musical theatre. We have performed school shows at the Roses Theatre in which all pupils take part and have the chance to perform on stage. We hold regular exams and have held after school clubs working in local primary schools. Our pupils are taking part in competitions with our students winning medals and we are also about to take part in Tewkesbury’s dance festival competition on 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th of June at Tewkesbury school. Coming up we will be going to London to perform in Her Majesty’s Theatre with Young Performers company on June 11th. We are taking 18 students and performing 2 dances - they are so excited! We also have a charity event coming up the week of May 22nd where we are dancing in our pyjamas all week to raise money for NSPCC and our competition
teams new shoes. We are very busy here at AFDance. Students have so much fun and learn so many skills that can be transferred to all areas of life as well as learning a great technique. There are so

I was entranced by its winding streets full of lovely old timber framed buildings,and most of all by its wonderful abbey, and I still am. Many of you will remember me as the reporter on the Admag, one of our local papers,

Festival. I joined the council about five years ago and last year when Cllr Karen Brennan was elected town Mayor she asked me to be her deputy. It was only after I agreed that I realised that by tradition and practice the deputy becomes mayor the following year, but tradition must be followed so on May 8th this year I found myself on the stage at the Watson Hall with the Town Clark and the outgoing mayor putting a red furtrimmed robe round my shoulders, and a gold chain round my neck and that was it - I became your mayor. Things got off to a great start, with the big weekend. You may have seen me and my Mayoress and good
friend, Maggie Wylam being arriving in a boat to cut the ribbon and officially open the event on Saturday, or leading the carnival parade up the High Street on Sunday. I would like to Congratulate Carol Crilley for organising such a fantastic event which attracted so many visitors to the town. I will be putting some events on to raise money for my chosen charities, which are ‘hope for the future’ a charity set up to ensure that cancer treatment is available at Tewkesbury hospital rather than ill people having to travel all the way to Cheltenham. My other charity is the town museum, that does an important job of saving much of our his-
tory and making it available to all. The other, more important side of being Mayor, is chairing both committee and full council meetings, helping to make decisions that will influence how the town will run into the future. I will always vote for what I believe is the best thing

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR 77 CHURCH STREET SURGERY In March 2017 the 77 Church Street Doctors’ Surgery moved to a splendid new building in Barton Street. At the AGM of the Patient Participation Group (PPG) a new committee was elected. The aim of the PPG is to represent the view of the patients and to work with the practitioners to improve the patient experience. The practice had recently been inspected and was rated as “Good” - with the patients agreeing that their care was excellent. The only concern was the difficulty in securing a consultation with one’s doctor without an undue delay. Chair of the 77 Church Street PPG, John Dixon, said: “We are all suffering from a national shortage of GPs and so the PPG wishes to explore other means of
communication so that patient needs can be effectively met. “We are learning perhaps the surprising lesson - that the surgery is a business to provide medical services, coexisting on the same site with another separate the NHS business,
“We were delighted with the initiative taken by the Borough Council to provide a permanent exit from the Rails Meadow Car Park. We would like to see some bus routes amended to help elderly patients access the Centre.” The PPG meets four

Fund Raising for Acorns Children’s Hopsice The animals, complete with creme eggs, sold well again this year. A total of 2,719 animals, chicks, ducks, rabbits, bears, chicks with hats, bears with noses were knitted thanks to our industrious knitters. We will be able to take a cheque for £3,000 to Acorns. This includes the profit from last years Christmas Catalogue sales. We are very grateful to all our helpers whether you knitted, stitched, sold or donated eggs. You have all contributed in some way to help us raise this sum of money for Acorns. Too soon to think about Christmas but
later this month we will be receiving Webb Ivory Christmas Catalogues. On Sunday 11th June we will be having a Tombola stall at the Tea Party Fundraiser, for Acorns Children’s Hospice at Birds Farm. ANNUAL SPRINGTIME MESSAGE Yes, I’m afraid it is the time of year when we have to get out the same message we issue every year, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. The spring and summer months, breeding season for a majority of our wild birds and mammals. it is already apparent at Vale Wildlife Hospital that people are not heeding the advice given regarding keeping cats in when there are fledgling birds around. Several catted birds are being brought in to the hospital every day and sadly, many do not
survive either because their injuries are too severe or because they haven’t been brought in soon enough. Birds need to receive life-saving antibiotics within a few hours of a cat attack otherwise they invariably get septicaemia because of the amount of nasty bacteria that live in a cats mouth. We are constantly told ‘Oh, but it’s nature for a cat to catch birds’.

䡵 Fledglings: vulnerable to cat attacks I don’t deny that it is an instinctive thing for a cat to do but domestic cats are not part of our native wildlife and millions of small birds and mammals are killed and maimed every year which must impact on the overall numbers of some species. If you are a cat owner, please spare a thought for all those young birds and mammals ‘learning the ropes’ out in the wild, give them a chance and keep your cat indoors if youngsters are around and, more importantly, at night. When most birds fledge and leave the nest, it will take a few days before they can fly strongly and they will spend this time on the ground, still being fed by mum and/or dad, exercising their wings to build up muscles. If you see a young bird in your garden, still being tended by adults, please don’t be tempted to rush out and pick it up, it will be fine and should be left alone.
If your cat does catch a bird, get it to us straight away so that we can administer vital antibiotics to hopefully save its life. Remember to be very careful when gardening at this time of year too. You may be clearing and tidying after the winter, mowing and strimming, having bonfires, turning over the compost heap. Please remember that your garden may well be home to many different species e.g. hedgehogs, voles, slowworms, grass snakes, newts, lizards, frogs and toads, which can easily be injured or disturbed during your ‘spring clean’. And please do make sure that you put fresh water out for your visiting wildlife every day. Saturday 24th June features the second visit of the season for the NHCA motorcycles plus competition for saloons, sports cars and single seaters. This includes rounds of the Paul Matty Lotus championship as well as the Porsche hillclimb series. Sunday 25th June brings another round of the Midland Hillclimb Championships. Both events feature cars racing against the clock on one Britain’s most historic uphill tarmac tracks.
