‘A Whole Life’ by Robert Seethaler Paperback, £8.99

This book is from the author of "The Tobacconist", which I featured in this magazine last November. It is not often I review books that have been published for some time, but this novel deserves to be read. So many customers have enjoyed the story about Freud and his local cigar shop in Vienna, it seemed appropriate, having only just read this short volume myself to present it to the readers of Tewkesbury Direct. The "whole life" is that of Anders Egger who endures a twisted leg, but far from being a cripple is as sure footed as a goat on the mountains where he lives, works, helping to install cable cars, and experiences a life straddling war, finds love, and heartache, until a chance encounter gives him a final career as a guide. Anders is a shy man and his courting of Marie is delicately described, their lives together, touching. Anders though is an orphan maltreated by a harsh uncle, who after adopting

Odd jobs lead to his employment with the cable car installers, where his surprising agility on the mountains is an asset. His experiences during the war are recounted with feeling, as is each part of Anders' life from the opening of the book, where he tries to rescue a goat herder and bring him down the mountain, until the story's conclusion when once again the herdsman is featured neatly rounding off a short novel which is told with feeling and sincerity. THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES When, after being open for 18 years, Alison's Bookshop received a coat of fresh paint at the end of last year this prompted new signs. Owner Ian Nicholson contacted local sign writer Stuart Naden who had provided all the original artwork for the shop. “When customers saw our old A-board sign was due for retirement, several said, “you cannot get rid of that, it's part of Tewkesbury,” Ian told Tewkesbury Direct. Century Court is a block of flats, built on an acceptable brownfield side in Oldbury Road, writes John Dixon. Its predecessor will be remembered by babyboomers as the Abbey Boys/Girls School. After the passing of the 1902 Educational Reform Act several schools were built – the Boys’ Grammar School (still next to the Bell car park) for those who passed the Scholarship and, for the rest, there was Chance Street Council School (1906) and the Abbey Boys’ School opened in 1911. Its name derives from the need to expand places in Church of England Schools – the girls were left at the first National School by the Abbey (now the Parish Rooms) and the boys were moved to this new school. Girls had to wait until 1941 when the school became mixed. Opinions about teachers there depend on who is being asked and the era. In the 1920s one man remembered that he attended at the age of 7 ‘and onwards my troubles started.’ John Sidebotham attended the school from about 1953-1956 and he still has fond memories of “Boss” Robinson. This Headmaster belonged to an era when teachers had time to do their job - and serve on the Town Council. Sign of the times in 1961 that it was the girls who escaped to a brand new school. Did the boys go to Chance Street until the Comprehensive School opened in 1972? John Sidebotham, now living in Australia, has written and self-published ìGreen and Pleasant Land’ which delightfully describes life in Tewkesbury in the post-war years - through the eyes of a child. The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness and get people who witness somebody showing stroke signs to overcome their initial reluctance to call 999 - even they are not sure that it is a stroke or if it is just one sign.

Can they smile? • ARMS – can they raise both arms and keep them there? • SPEECH – is their speech slurred? • TIME - to call 999 if you see any one of these signs A Stroke is when blood supply to the brain is cut off. This can be due to a blood clot , or where a blood vessel

bursts. There are health factors which can increase the risk to patients, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes. There were a lot of people involved in Tewkesbury Repair Café. Repairers, front of house, the catering team from Friends of the Earth and, of course, the many clients with their items for repair. These can included vacuum cleaners, a lamp, a PC, a bike, TVs, stereos, clothes, a carpet and, inevitably, a cuddly toy which has lost its singing voice technology.

What many of these people may not realise is that Tewkesbury is one of over 1500 Repair Cafés worldwide. Each sharing the same aim of making things last longer by repairing them, so reducing both

the amount of resources used in making new goods and the waste to be disposed of, possibly in landfill or dumped at sea. The very first Repair Café was organised by Martine Postma in Amsterdam in October 2009. Two years later she founded Repair Café Foundation to spread the word. And spread it did, there are now Repair Cafes throughout Europe, the US, Australia and so on; mainly in richer countries where the repair habit has been lost, and there are few professional repairers to go to. In

poorer countries, repairing is part of everyday life and so the need for Repair Cafes is less. Does repairing work? Can Repair Cafes really extend the life of goods? Yes, we can. Research by the University of California found that 63% of items were successfully repaired. In the Netherlands, where Repair cafes started, and are very common, success rates ranged from 88% for bikes to less than 30% for laptops. Somethings are made to

be repaired, but unfortunately many manufacturers seem to be deliberately make repairing almost impossible. If it breaks, they expect you to buy another. These are volunteers recruited by the Severn Rivers Trust to count the Twaite Shad as they migrate up river on their journey from the sea to their spawning areas. To enable the volunteers to see the fish easier, some white material has been fixed to the fish pass. In the 12th century, the

abundant Severn Shad were an excellent source of protein in the diet, but even then they were over fished. Unfortunately for the Shad, during the Industrial Revolution, the Severn was made navigable with the installation of locks and weirs, and their numbers declined. Lottery funding will now be used to remove

the barriers on the Severn and Teme rivers, by constructing a fish pass at Diglis Weir. This will open up the river as far as Shrewsbury once again for the annually migrating fish. Their reintroduction will also improve the biodiversity of the river waters. So far Helen has counted nine Shad successfully negotiating the pass.

The importance of stretching by Osteopath Katie Hogg It's very easy to forget what we ask of our muscles and joints every day when we are rushing about doing our jobs, chores and hobbies. When your body is working well and you suffer no ill effects from the stresses and strains thrown at you its easy to be complacent. I often see people in my clinic who have active hobbies such as gardening and walking but these people forget to do one simple thing other hobbyists never forget to do….stretch. Doing a few simple stretches before and after exercise can help keep the post-activity aches at bay. Muscles can contract when moving us, holding objects still and moving objects. When this is done on a regular basis the body adapts and becomes strong in particular movements. However, if the muscles are not stretched after being used this can lead to tension and shortening of the muscles. I recommend a simple stretch routine every day to maintain even tone and healthy muscles.. This routine can be used multiple times in the day and can be used before and after your chosen activity as well as general use. A useful routine would include a Quad (front of thigh) stretch, a hamstring and calf stretch (back of leg), a back roll down and a chest stretch. This is a basic routine for general assistance. If you feel any discomfort during these stretches please seek medical assistance. To stretch correctly go to the point of feeling the stretch and hold this position for the count of 10. From the outset we received nothing but helpful advice after our move to a new property. Andy arranged for existing curtains to be altered quickly and to an excellent standard and then fitted them with great care. Appropriate new curtain poles were suggested and fitted, again with great care and efficiency. A new roman blind was also suggested for one window which is proving an excellent choice as Andy has an extensive range of fabrics so we could choose a perfect match. The word husky originated from the word referring to the Arctic people, Inuit (Eskimos). English sailors pronounced it ‘Huskimos’. Later in 1852, husky was referring to the dogs kept by the Inuit people. SIBERIAN HUSKY: The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated from among the Chukchi, a tripe of Siberian nomads. They used these dogs as fast transportation also interacting with the Chukchi as a family dog. Huskies often slept with the children and thus provided warm and comfortable beds. The Siberian Husky was imported to Alaska in 1908 and was used as sledge dogs during the gold rush. Huskies are remarkable dogs, and their ability to learn is staggering. This is not a breed for everyone, their beauty overshadows their difficult traits, which makes Huskies prime candidates for dog shelters. ALASKAN MALAMUTE: The Alaskan Malamute features a powerful, sturdy body built for stamina and strength. They were used to pull heavy sheds over long distances as well as to hunt seals and polar bears. It is one of the oldest breeds whose looks have not been significantly altered. With it’s wolf-like facial markings and huge plumed tail, it is easy to

believe them to be partwolf. In fact this breed is generally used to play wolves on TV or in the movies.

AKITA INU (above): The Akita is named after the province of Akita in northern Japan. This is a large powerful dog, with a large head in contrast to small triangular eyes. It was used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. They also tracked and hunted boar, black bear and sometimes deer. One of the Akita’s singular traits is ‘mouthing’, they love to carry things around in their mouths, including your wrist. This is not aggressive but simply a way of communicating with the one they love, for example, leading you to the leash, because they want to go for a walk. London Zookeepers once chose an Akita puppy to be a companion to a Sumatran tiger cub that had been orphaned. It was not frightened to engage in play fighting and its dense coat protected it from the sharp claws and it became a loyal playmate until the tiger reached adulthood!

Tewkesbury Tigers, the junior section of Tewkesbury Rugby Football Club, honoured longstanding coach Martin Thomas at their end of season presentation evening. Martin, who played for Gloucester Old Boys in his youth, was persuaded to take the role of coach to the U7s in 2007 when his eldest son joined the team. Over the years Martin has embraced his role with vigour and passion and has led the team successfully for 10 years, culminating in the 2017/18 season. U16s captain, Jack Brinn, thanked Martin, describing him as a father figure to the team and presented him with a signed team photo. Martin’s enthusiasm for coaching has led him to also take on the role of assistant coach to the senior Tewkesbury RFC teams as well as coaching with Gloucester’s Developing Player Program. He is also planning to remain with the Tigers to provide support to the younger teams and junior coaches. Although this was the U16s last season as Tewkesbury Tigers many

of the boys hope to continue playing as part of a newly formed Colts team in conjunction with

other local clubs. Colts consist of players who are 16 or 17 transitioning from junior to senior rugby. Three members of the U16 team, Samuel

Thomas, Jack Brinn and Will Gamble, have also been selected by Gloucester to continue on their pathway of developing players and will be training with the U17s next season. Tewkesbury RFC has an active junior section with teams from U7 to U16 as well as Girls, Ladies and Senior men. These copper coins were struck in 1797 by industrialist Matthew Boulton and were the first coins pressed by steampower. They were introduced as a response to the many forged halfpennies that had been in circulation previously, a situation rather akin to our recent replacement of our own pound coins. The coins are inscribed with Britannia and for the first time sitting in the waves on the sea, alluding to her position of a major seapower. The reverse shows a side relief of King George in a crown of laurel.

the field, until you meet another path. (8). Turn left and walk along the edge of the field; the house across the field to your left is Lower Mill. When you meet the next path, turn left (9) can be muddy - and go back up the lane into the village. Turn right to return to the church.

The charity aims to relieve the loneliness of isolated older people who live alone, by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host’s home where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. To help kick-start the new group in Tewkesbury, Contact the Elderly is looking for volunteer drivers who are able to collect older guests from their homes and accompany them to the tea party each month. Contact the Elderly’s South of England Development Officer, Elizabeth Banfield said: “We’re delighted to be opening a new group in Tewkesbury and to

A MIRACULOUS NEW LIFE FOR EMPIRE EXHIBITION COACH A fantastic restoration of a coach made to take visitors around the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924,has been completed. Volunteers from the North Gloucestershire narrow gauge railway at Toddington, rescued a rotting shell from the overgrown garden of an empty property near Teddington Hands, and painstakingly restored it

and now it has been put back into passenger service. There were originally 18 coaches built by the Gloucester Carriage and Wagon Works specially for the British Empire Exhibition the coaches

were hauled by road going tractor units and, when the exhibition ended, all eighteen were brought back to Gloucester where they were auctioned off as garden sheds and chicken houses, etc.

This is the only remaining one we can trace. We understand that our coach was used at a farm for a family to sleep in whilst the farmhouse was rented out to visitors in the summer.

Head of Unit Nic Price said “The boat had been out of the water so that much needed work could be done on her over the

CELEBRATING 140 YEARS AT THE CROSS A church right at the heart of Tewkesbury, by the town cross and war memorial, is celebrating 140 years since it was opened in 1878, Tewkesbury Methodist Church was opened on 5 June 1878 and throughout June is staging three special exhibitions. • In cooperation with Tewkesbury Historical Society, photographs of Tewkesbury during the mid-to-late 1880’s. • A fascinating display of early documents associated with the opening of the church in 1878. • Brilliant six–foot long banners by renowned textile artist Jacqui Parkinson.** The banners will be hung on the walls and flying from the roof trusses. The 2018 Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition is now open for all writers of poetry and prose of 16 and over, who live, work or are studying in Gloucestershire. There are two prizes of £200, one for the best poem (of up to 50 lines) and one for the best piece of prose (of up to 750 words) and six runner-up prizes. The winners and runners-up will be invited to read at the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Prize Winners event at the festival this October. This year’s competition theme is ‘East meets West’ which you can explore as widely as you like. The judges are Anna Saunders, CEO of the

Cheltenham Poetry Festival whose latest collection of poetry is Ghosting for Beginners (Indigo Dreams 2018) and author Kim Fleet, whose most recent novel is Holy Blood (The History Press 2017). This included sewing and knitting articles of clothing for the troops, making camouflage netting and of course producing Jams and Chutneys. Ripple Church Weekend of Celebration The weekend of April 21/22 was a very busy time at Ripple Church. The ‘Service of Blessing & Thanks’ for the provision of our new toilet on the Saturday was well attended, it was nice to see so many people there especially those included in all the work before & during the process of building the toilet. We surprised our former churchwarden Eleanor Grigson when she was asked to cut the ribbon to officially open the toilet (a very well-kept secret). Following a lovely spur of the moment speech she was presented with a Stephanotis plant by two of the youngest members of our congregation.

Afternoon Tea followed and was enjoyed by all. On Sunday we were delighted to once again welcome Tewkesbury Town Band, we were entertained to an evening of rousing music which was as always greatly appreciated by those who support both the Band and the Church. The Band has helped

us over the years raising money towards the toilet with their concerts, so we were delighted to be able to divide the £900 taken on the evening with them towards the work on their new headquarters. The concert was followed by refreshments being served, thank you all so much. By Jocelyn Butwell.

Cathy & Stu’s big challenge Fundraising Tewkesbury runners Cathy and Stuart Dudfield head to Bolton next month take part in their biggest challenge yet - Ironman UK. “We are both raising money for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA)”, said Cathy. “This is a charity very close to our hearts due to our daughter Carly being born with a cleft lip and palate in 1990. “It was a severe cleft and she underwent numerous operations, mostly in Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital. “Ironman UK consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle ride, then a marathon - a 26.2 mile run! “We are both members of the Tewkesbury

Running Club, who have also agreed to donate money as their nominated charity for this year. “Carly is now a supervisor at Specsavers in Tewkesbury, and they have also agreed to raise money within the shop, with a donation tin in store and lots of advertising. “I am doing a ‘guess our finish time’ competition with some prizes that have been donated by Gravity Fitness, Woody’s Fruit & Veg and the Raj restaurant.” Anyone wishing to get behind Cathy and

MIDSUMMER MOTORSPORT ON PRESCOTT HILL There are two important motorsport events on the famous Prescott Hill, near Gotherington, over the next two months. The Midsummer Speed Festival, over the weekend of 23rd/24th June, brings two separate one day meetings. On the Saturday, bikes, saloon and sports cars compete uphill against the clock, and on the Sunday there is a round of the Midland Hillclimb Championships. Next month (Saturday 14th July) Prescott celebrates its eightieth anniversary with a special event, including a Bugatti Festival. A large number of classic and vintage cars will be in attendance, including past record holders. Prescott is home to the Bugatti Owners’ Club, so the day promises to be quite a spectacle.
