Most of our readers will know of Pat Barker for her W.W.1 Regeneration Trilogy which really established her reputation, followed on by her second trilogy covering selected characters over the two world wars. In "Silence of the Girls" the author again immerses us in the brutalities of war but set in the battlefields of Troy. Achilles is one of the main characters, but the story is told from the female perspective of Briseis, once a Queen now a slave. The narrative tells of an extreme change of life style, but there is tenderness and even friendship amongst the captors and captive. Close affiliation between the slaves, with rivalries played out often for self preservation.

The opening scenes are the final assault on Lyrnessus, Achilles triumphant, destroys the city, taking selected prisoners but many are just cut down and massacred. Shipped back to Achilles' camp outside the besieged walls of Troy, Briseis has to endure the attentions of Achilles, but her life is far better than many other women, and the squalor of the encampment is well described. All is not plain sailing within the Greek camp as Achilles and Agamemnon fall out. However the subplot is very much the close friendship between
Achilles, and his boyhood companion, and now colleague in arms, Patroclus, who himself shows genuine closeness to Briseis. Their lives play out across the camp and the battlefields, their histories and mythologies, revealed. As ever, Pat Barker is excellent with her characterisations, and her imaginings of these individuals read with real authenticity. The retelling of the siege of Troy, and it's inevitable outcome; the story of Achilles will be known to many; but the author is a natural storyteller, and she makes us, her reader, a witness as the events unfold until Troy falls, and burns.

This should make a good holiday read, there is some inevitable blood and gore, but that aside Pat Barker, who always entertains, offers us a fresh view of past events, cleanly told. The pages seemed to turn effortlessly; a well written story well told.

Can you help identify local artist? Dear Tewkesbury Direct - I have a question that Tewkesbury Direct readers might be able to answer. A few months ago the Town Council was given a piece of community textile art, in appliqué and hand embroidery. It is a little over one metre high and one metre long. It was the work of a number of Tewkesbury people, led by a local textile artist called Diana Khan, probably Diana Margaret Tovey-Khan, to use her full name. The wall hanging has been on display in the community room at Hanover Court for many years, is still in good condition and is a part of Tewkesbury's community heritage. I have tried to find out more about the artist. There are several companies on the internet that sell postcards showing the work of an artist called Diana Khan, using appliqué and hand embroidery and inspired by wildlife. Maybe this is the same lady? Born in Paddington in 1928, Diana Margaret Tovey moved around the country a lot and I think she may have been married more than once, but
the Town Hall at some time so that people can enjoy it, but before that happens it would be good to know more about Diana Khan herself. Do any of your readers know anything else about her? Art Deco-style dining near station As the consultation process for improvements to Worcester's Foregate Street station gains momentum, Midlands-based company Centenary Lounge has opened a stunning new bistro café close by. In the year ended April 2019, Tewkesbury Foodbank assisted over 1500 local people. Marion Badham of the Church Street-based centre, said: “Last year we processed 637 vouchers, which represented 945 adults and 566 children making a total of 1511 people who were supplied with three days of emergency food.” In the corresponding period for the previous year, 1048 people were assisted, compared to 737 in 2014/15 when the Tewkesbury Foodbank first opened. These modern homes enjoy a splendid view over Tewkesbury Cricket Club, writes John Dixon. In doing so, have broken the tradition of building along the old Medieval burgage plots from Church Street to Swilgate Road, or “back of Swilgate” as it was previously known. Instead they have built across several plots to create new frontages. The old style homes from 1966 were known as 1-4 Yew Tree Cottages and were linked to more cottages in a court stretching towards Church Street. The whole plot had been bought for £350
the Ground Floor was a ‘kitchen, wash house between 2 & a separate W. C.’ One family of tenants were the Panters. What was not shown in the 1966 photograph is this sturdy brick structure, used as a play area by these smart young children (pictured left) in a photo supplied by Barnsley THS
(only £39,780 today) by Tewkesbury’s very wealthy builder, F W Godfrey. The tax inspector of 1913 estimated they had been built about 1860.

Independent Bookshop Week Poetry Event At alison’s bookshop alison’s bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street has been asked to host the National launch of Independent publisher Candlestick Press’ latest publication in their popular “Instead of a Card” series, “Ten poems about Horses”. So poetry lovers, horse lovers a note for your diary; June 19th at 6.30 p.m. alison’s, Tewkesbury’s Independent Bookshop, is celebrating 20 years this October. When they opened, there were around 1900 Independents trading, now that number has slipped below 900. Independent Bookshop week is a national initiative to promote stores like alison’s bookshop, and runs from June 15th-22nd. alison’s customers regularly select from the Candlestick display stand, situated in the Swan Room alongside their extensive poetry shelves. The wide choice of subjects Candlestick cover has become ever more popular as the choice has enlarged. Candlestick Press asked Ian Nicholson, the Owner of alison’s bookshop, if he would host this launch. The arboretum, managed by the Kemerton Conservation Trust, has a variety of trees from all over the world as well as indigenous species. To start the walk, park in one of the car parks on the B4079 near Bredon Village Hall. The 540 bus from Tewkesbury to Evesham also stops nearby. Leave the car park and walk along the road towards Kemerton. When you reach the drive on the right (which leads to the former Westmancote Nurseries (1) walk up it and pass to the right of the old greenhouses. Go over a small footbridge (2) and follow the path around the edge of a plantation, keeping the hedge to your left. When you reach the next track (3) turn left and then take the stile on your right into the Park Field (4); follow the direction arrows across the field to a road. The house opposite you is Kemerton Court. Go through the gate (5), cross the road, bear

Walk over to the opposite side and go through the gate on to the road (6). Turn right and walk down the lane, passing the church and Upper Court on the left. This attractive Cotswold stone house has been featured in the TV series ‘Father Brown.’ Carry on past the Old Manor and several black and white thatched cottages. Eventually the lane bears sharply right, then meets Kinsham Lane. At the T-junction turn right (7) and look for the sign on the left to Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve. Walk down the track between two hedges until it meets the same track you were on earlier. Turn left (8) and walk towards the wood, which you will enter via a kissing gate. Walk through the trees and after a short distance you will emerge by the lake. A jetty leads to a hide built over the water, which is a must for nature lovers. It brings you close up to a wide variety of birds.
Continue along the narrow path between two wire fences and go through a kissing gate to enter the arboretum proper. There are some information boards which tell you about the history of the reserve and the flora and fauna you might see here. Turn left along the broad path: there is a map of permissive paths by a bench ahead on the left, which shows you which parts of the arboretum have public access. You may care to visit some of these, but do note that dogs are not allowed in other parts of
the arboretum. Personally, I prefer to retrace my steps from here to point 8, then carry straight on to reach point 3 as it means less distance is walked along the road - and is safer! But to carry on with the circular route, turn right and take the public footpath (opposite the bench and sign- 9) and walk down the edge of the field keeping the hedge to your left. Upon reaching the road (B4079) turn right (X) and walk back into Bredon village. At the Tjunction turn left to return to the car park.

Stage set for another Tewkesbury Folk Treble One of the UK’s most popular young songwriters returns to Tewkesbury this month to headline another ‘Folk Treble’ event at the Old Baptist Chapel. Kim Lowings, who is originally from the Midlands but now lives near Gloucester, will be performing as a duo with her father Andrew on Friday 21st June. The family pair have been writing and collaborating since 2011. They have become Andrew & Kim Lowings well established on the British folk circuit and together form half of the band Kim Lowings and The Greenwood. As a duo they are able to showcase their songwriting skills and the intricacies of their acoustic sound with a warm and captivating stage presence. The sound draws together mountain dulcimer, guitar, bouzouki and piano to resonate with Kim’s lyric writing and arrangements of traditional folk song. The breadth and quality of their material enables the duo to appeal to folk venues and festivals of all shapes and sizes. Andrew Lowings will also be performing on the night as a member of Town Musicians of Bremen, alongside nyckelharpa player Lewis Jones and guitarist/cittern expert Leon Gormley. The third member of the ‘Folk Treble’ line-up is local singer/songwriter Mike Weaver, who lives in south Worcestershire. MITTON W.I. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Parade 2019 Our May meeting was a talk by Don and Jo on Tewkesbury from the Abbey to the Cross down Church Street. We were treated to some lovely old photos and very amusing stories of the characters who lived and worked there. We were treated to an uplifting talk by Helen at our April meeting. Helen has been travelling to Sierra Leone over the last few years to help the Kambia District Foundation establish a school in the village of Masama. Helen's next project is to help a school in Cambodia set up by Kep Gardens Association. We are hoping Helen will return next year to update us on her adventures in Cambodia. Thanks to all members who knitted hats for Helen to take for the maternity wards in that area. Mitton W.I also competed in the local area quiz at Toddington Village Hall. We did not get through to the next round, but had an enjoyable evening. The June meeting will be a food tasting evening with a competition to bake a favourite pudding from childhood. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Mitton W.I. meets every first Monday of the month at Mitton Manor Primary School at 7.30pm. The 2019 Medieval Festival Parade on Sunday 14th July promises to a really spectacular community event bringing together hundreds of participants from local schools, playgroups, dance schools, choirs, local WI groups, the Abbey, Boys Brigade, Sea Cadets and lots of other groups with many of the festival re-enactors and entertainers in a joyous celebration of the town’s history.
Tewkesbury Medieval Festival exists to stage the annual festival and re-enactment of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury and to promote the town as a place of historic importance. Tewkesbury was the defining battle in the War of the Roses as Edward Prince of Wales was killed here effectively ending the Lancastrian claim to the throne. 2019 will be the festival’s 36th year. Thanks to a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, carnival artists will work with many of the groups helping them create medieval inspired mod-
els to parade using recycled materials wherever possible. Children and adults will learn much about the characters their models represent and their fate at the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury. The pub singers choir will learn medieval music to sing and the Abbey choir will also perform. Giants were a traditional part of medieval processions and this year we will have visiting giants from the Canterbury and Chester medieval pageants plus St Blaise, the Frampton giant and his entourage of fabulous creatures. There will be
medieval musicians aplenty, Pentacle Drummers from Eastbourne and festival favourites Mythago Morris and by tradition, the town band will lead the parade in their smart medieval costumes. The parade will set off from Quay Street at 11.15am and work its way down the High Street, round the Cross, past the Abbey and ends at the Vineyards opposite Lower Lode Lane at around 12.15pm. Any new groups

Geraldine Liddy, parade organiser said “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players. 10 Years of Tewkesbury Allrunners From small beginnings come great things. An amazing ladies’ running club. In July 2009 a group of 20 women, under the guidance of Head Coach Kerry Newell, started a “Couch to 5k” course, with the backing of Tewkesbury Borough Council. Ten weeks later, those women that completed the course had enjoyed it so much they persuaded Kerry to carry on as a club. The rest, as they say, is history! The club has had a number of name changes; originally “Women’s Running Network”, it then became “Tewkesbury Ladies’ Running Club” and more recently, in conjunction with the setting up of the Children’s 365 Academy, it adopted its current guise: Tewkesbury Allrunners. The club colours are a bright, brazen red. And the group keeps growing. Every week over 100 people attend the three disciplines: ladies’ running group, children’s 365 Athletics Academy and Athlefit (a strength and conditioning session for runners) and the group has in excess of 400 members. It is supported by a 12strong coaching team. So why is it so popular? Any number of rea-
sons! First and foremost, all the run leaders are qualified, and always so welcoming, encouraging, and informative. Secondly, whatever your ability, age or reason for running, there is always someone to run with, chat with, moan with – especially during those cheeky peaks (hill sessions) the leaders like throwing it in on a “fun night”. And last but by no means least, the Allrunners’ ethos is about celebrating each others’ success. Whether you run a virtual 5k race (this is a race run with friends or alone and a medal is won when proof is sent off to the organisers) or an ultra marathon, showing off that shiny bit of bling at Tuesday night club is what makes everyone proud. There’s clapping, cheering, photos posted on the Facebook page – everyone has their moment of glory. A favourite quote within the club is “it’s all about finish lines, not finish times” and that spirit of inclusivity sums up every single one of our runners. A word about cake. An Allrunner will, generally, do anything for
cake. Mention the word cake to any Allrunner and a big smile will cross her face. We run for cake - whether it is the Hot Cross Bun Run, celebratory cake when the twice-yearly Couch to 5k runners complete their course, or refuelling after a race. Being an Allrunner is not only about running, it’s about socialising and, of course, eating cake. To celebrate our amazing 10 years, Tewkesbury Allrunners are holding some events for our runners such as a rounders evening and a run in the country followed by afternoon tea. However, the main event to which we would like to invite everyone, whether you want to run, walk, crawl or even
just come along and cheer on the runners, is Tewkesbury parkrun at the Vineyards on Saturday 20th July. There will be a sea of red tops as well as the usual
parkrunners and hopefully you will be able to see what our group is all about. We meet every Tuesday night at 6pm at the Sea Cadets’ Hall,

seller. I’ve experienced all kinds of items being left behind from a sofa to a cat being locked in a kitchen and a grandfather who didn’t speak English in an upstairs bedroom! All of these problems were resolved with a little effort and additional costs to the sellers. My advice is to keep in regular contact with your lawyer right up to exchange and make them aware of any concerns you have either in respect of the property, its condition or any rubbish which has not been removed. If you notice any changes to the property prior to completion you must let your lawyer know as soon as possible. If your lawyer needs funds from you in order to complete your purchase, make sure these are sent to them no later than the day before completion to avoid any delay and financial penalties that could potentially apply. Tewkesbury Bellringers, take first place On Saturday 6th April a band of 8 bellringers from the Tewkesbury area took part in the annual Gloucester and Bristol Diocesan Association 8 bell competition, this year held at St Briavels. Six of the ringers are from the Abbey and two from Twyning. The Tewkesbury Branch band was delighted to be awarded first place and the Penn Trophy. The six Abbey ringers also competed in the Association 6 bell competition at Hewelsfield on the same day and were awarded first place in this as well and the Croome Trophy. STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
FENDER STRATOCASTER Ask anybody, anywhere on the planet, young or old, to draw an electric guitar and they will most likely come up with something that strongly resembles Fender’s ubiquitous Stratocaster, writes Paul Thomas. That’s how firmly imprinted this remarkable musical instrument is upon the world’s psyche. Amazingly, Leo Fender not only got it right first time with his Telecaster; traversing continents like the telephone, the telegram, the television. He went and got it right second time, too, with the Stratocaster; reaching out to the very stars in the stratosphere as the space race began to bubble and boil. Designed in 1954 by Leo, with help from Bill Carson, George Fullerton and Freddie Tavares, the Stratocaster was a guitar of firsts. The first guitar with a ‘comfort contour body’. The first guitar to feature a double cutaway with an extended top horn for balance. The first guitar to boast three pick-ups. The first guitar with a spring tension vibrato system. A tipped blade selector switch. A volume/tone/tone control system. New, dramatic colour schemes… any one of these innovations (which are taken for granted today) would have made the Stratocaster an enduring icon amongst guitarists. But all of them together, in one package, not only gripped (and continues to grip) guitarists but the sum of the parts produced an artefact of such beauty that it wriggled away from musicians and became an enduring symbol of modernity, youth, rock’n’roll, freedom, cool. Interchangeable with the sculpted beauty of a Coke bottle. If it is hard to imagine a world without, say, Coca-Cola or cars or ice-cream; it is equally hard to imagine a world without the Fender Stratocaster. Everybody has seen one, all guitarists have played one. It’s as simple as that. Fender have manufactured Stratocasters, continuously, since 1954. They have been built in America, Mexico, Japan, Korea, India, China, Indonesia and are probably being built in Afghanistan as we speak (well, probably not Afghanistan). There have been hundreds of variations on the theme. Different pick-up combinations, different bridges, different colour schemes; you name it and Fender have produced it at some point in time. But the inescapable fact remains; the fender Stratocaster just works. The list of famous guitarists who have made their name using a Strat is indeed a long one. The list of cool guitarists who have made their name using a Strat is somewhat shorter - those of an independent bent have tended to shy away from such an ‘obvious’ guitar. However, here’s a list of notables and I leave it to the reader to decide if they belong on the long list or the short one! The famous Vale of Evesham Asparagus Season is now in full swing, writes Jack B. Walker. The local ‘gras’, as it is known, now has protected European food name status - part of a unique club including Champagne and Jersey Royal potatoes. Only asparagus grown in the region can be sold with the Vale of Evesham name. Many farm shops in the area now have it on sale, but the season (which traditionally starts on St George’s Day) reaches its close on Friday 21st June - the Spring equinox.
The nearby village of Ashton-under-Hill also has an Open Gardens weekend on 8th and 9th June (1pm-6pm).

NO-FAULT EVICTIONS: DF LEGAL BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU In our experience, most landlords only look at eviction based on breach of tenancy agreements or late non-payment. It is also possible to evict tenants at the end of a fixed tenancy for no fault by serving the correct notice which a number of landlords currently use as a back-up provision. However, new laws have been announced today that may change this. The proposed changes are very drastic, as the whole section 21 process is potentially going to be withdrawn. Landlords would therefore have to proceed through the section 8 process which means that they can only seek possession provided that they meet the strict grounds for possession mentioned under section 8. Greater thought will have to be given towards eviction of tenants. A landlord will no longer have the right to simply ‘want’ his property returned at the end of a fixed tenancy; a valid reason must be provided. The landlord will need to carefully consider whether or not he can satisfy the section 8 requirements before commencing through the eviction process as mistakes with the claim can result in significant financial sanctions for the landlord. At this stage, the government is still in consultation as to the exact

details of the proposed changes. Therefore, there has been no date set as of yet. However, if previous changes are anything to go by we may be looking at imple-

GLOVER’S ALLEY: A DARK AND DIRTY PLACE Glover’s Alley was one of those which were swept away to build the Bishop’s Walk precinct. It was the less-famous neighbour of Double Alley. If you stand in the middle of Bishop’s walk, you are standing at the entrance, with the ‘front house’ of the alley, 89 High Street, occupying the corner of Lloyds Chemists. The alley went diagonally, through the front of Thornton’s to Oldbury Road, at a point opposite the Albion Inn. Named for Joseph Glover, a carpenter who lived in No 89 in the 1840s, the alley was described as ‘a very old alley and quite of the Tewkesbury style. It is very narrow, about four feet in the widest parts. The houses are very small and in the old time style. They were very dirty and dark and something more like holes in the wall’. The property market seems to bear out this description. In 1880, rents were £2.60p per annum and two cottages were sold; for £9.00 and £12.00. The Borough Council were constantly investigating problems with the
condition of houses and regular notices being issued for improvement. By the 1920s, the orders were for eviction, because houses were considered unfit for habitation. These were upgraded to demolition
orders when it proved difficult to stop people moving back in. In 1841 there were eleven houses occupied, of thirteen or fourteen in the alley. This number steadily fell and it was almost unoccupied and largely
demolished by the late 1930s. Property values fell so low that in 1936 Mr Halling offered his last two cottages to the Council in return for their paying for the demolition. The alley became no more than a pathway to Oldbury Road, and in 1961 an order was made to stop it up, in preparation for the wholesale demolition which would follow a few years later The alley had come close to being demolished in 1933 when the erection of a cinema was approved. The company involved wasn’t able to acquire the whole site, though, and it fell through. A rival scheme

OUR ALLEYWAYS - Continued from Page 42 was more successful, and the Sabrina was built a few yards away, with the demolition of Bishop’s Alley. The standard of housing in Glover’s Alley did not attract tenants of substance, and it inevitably meant a high
level of deprivation, which is reflected in the frequent problems families had there. Some people crop up time and time again. In three months in 1885, for instance, Julia Peart was fined twice for drunkenness, once for using obscene language and then for assaulting Sarah Turley. These were very common sorts of offences in the alley. Much more serious was the case of John and Minnie Chamberlain, who were each sentenced to fourteen days hard labour in 1922 for
child neglect. Doctor Devereaux reported what he found in 4, Glover’s Alley. The room on the ground floor was occupied by a lady known as ‘Black Sall’. The family, all ten of them, lived in two small rooms on the first floor,
furnished with just one bed. He wouldn’t use the stairs because four steps were missing and the children had to be brought down to him. He found their heads verminous, their ears dirty and their backs covered all over with flea
bites. They were fairly well nourished, though, and there were no signs of starvation or physical violence. Though the family had endured unimaginable ill fortune before finding a roof in Glover’s Alley the magistrates showed little compassion. The children went to the workhouse and their parents to jail. Glover’s Alley never was, and never could be, a jewel of any sort in Tewkesbury’s crown. It was not a place where anyone chose to live; its residents were there because life had given them little other choice. No-one stayed there for very long. The great majority lived life quietly and on the right side of the law but it’s no real surprise that many didn’t. No-one seems to have mourned the passing of the cottages and eventually the alley itself. Not even the house owners.

I live in Wynyards Close, Tewkesbury, writes Helen Carver. It was Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, and I was at home gardening, potting up young plants and having a tidy up in the garage. I was pleased to discover a micro-fibre cleaning cloth, it was bright green. a little soiled, so I left it by the plant shelving next to the garage. At 10.30pm that night, I went out to check if I had locked up the garage. I encountered a hedgehog in the act of pulling the cloth off the shelving. I was concerned it would eat it, or get the fibres caught in its paws/claws/spines, and cause it harm. I bent down and gently pulled a corner of the cleaning cloth; the hedgehog held on tight to its corner. I pulled harder, and it pulled back. This was developing into a ‘tug of duster’ with a hedgehog! I pulled even harder the hedgehog then poked me in the face with its bright, beady eyes in a most possessive attitude. I was being ‘eyeballed’ by a hedgehog! I let the duster go. It scuttled off dragging the
green cloth with it, under my neighbours’ parked cars next to my garage. I followed, but the street light was not bright enough for me to see where it went. I was astonished at such assertive, confrontational behaviour defying me. Hedgehogs normally curl up in a ball or run away.
Also, why was it so keen to have a microfibre cloth? Going to do a bit of light dusting in its nest? It was a big hedgehog. Maybe it - she was pregnant and taking the cloth as a sort of duvet for the hog lets in the nest nursery? I had locked the garage.
The next day, when the parked cars next day had gone, I found the green cloth on the ground. I was relieved that it did no harm. I retrieved my duster. My neighbour six houses away from me has fed hedgehogs for some years (proper hedgehog food). I called to ask if she has hedgehogs coming to her feeding station. She replied “two small ones and one large one.” She added: “I know it’s silly, but I do chat too them when they come to eat the food. I encourage them to eat their dinner up and have a nice drink.” The large hedgehog was most likely the one that defied me; it was well-fed and used to humans! Hedgehog numbers are declining due to changes in, and loss of habitat. It is pleasing to know that hedgehogs of Wynyards Close seem to be surviving so well. By Helen Carver.

Over the last couple of years the museum has run a number of successful workshops with local schools which are studying the topic of flooding. beloved Tewkesbury. “Summer floods, of course, are rare and therefore catastrophic. They ruin the crops and catch the farmers’ stock in the river meadows. Nobody is prepared for them. This flood [the Great Flood of 1924] soon began to bring down with it not only debris but a strange har-

New Cat in Town Tewkesbury’s dogs beware, there’s a new cat in town. And he’s hard. Bronze hard. This is Czar, a work by renowned Gloucestershire sculptor Diane Gorvin. It is the latest, and maybe the best, of the artworks commissioned or inspired by Project Alleycat. The cat lies on the riverside wall at Back of Avon. It is modelled in part on Diane’s cat, Czar, a three legged cat rescued by the artist in Cadiz, Spain. Despite his infirmity, the real Czar happily climbs on to roofs at his new home in the Dean. Project Alleycat see Czar as an inspiration, the backstreet cat overcoming adversity to find his peace alongside the Avon.
The sculpture was part financed by Gloucestershire County Council, via Councillor Kevin Cromwell, but the majority of the cost was raised through sales of the “Alleys and Courts” maps and tea towels and proceeds of “Alley Strolls”, guided walks through Tewkesbury’s many alleys, courts, lanes and walks. Diane is best known locally for her work on the metal standards of the “Arrivall” horses statues, created by her husband Phil Bews, but she and Phil have worked in many countries including Australia, China and, of course, Spain, as well as in the UK.
In the few weeks since Czar was unveiled by Town Mayor Chris Danter, he has surprised and delighted visitors and local alike as he basks in the May sunshine. But there is one problem: he confuses dogs: they recognise that Czar looks like a cat, but he certainly doesn’t smell or act like one. Several dogs have attempted to stare him down – but no such luck.
When you are made of metal, and bolted to a wall, you will win every time. Project Alleycat have also been working with County Highways to improve the town’s footpaths, and are particularly pleased with repaving of part of Smith’s Lane in blue engineering brick, this has really improved the view from the High St down to the river.

Was British Leyland doomed to fail? Probus Club finds out Members of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club were recently entertained by John Macartney, a retired executive of the now-defunct British Leyland Motor Corporation which was brought into being in the late 1960’s. Most people remember BL as the producer of many interesting and sometimes innovative car designs but unfortunately many also remember the poor quality and reliability of many of the models it produced. John’s talk was entitled “British Leyland – doomed to failure?” and John was perhaps the ideal person to answer this conundrum, as he spent his working life in the motor manufacturing business and British Leyland in particular. In his 20’s John was appointed personal assistant to BL’s Chairman Donald Stokes and consequently he enjoyed almost unlimited access to members of the company’s main board and the whole of the senior management team across all BL Group factories. It was fascinating to hear of the difficulties experienced by the management of BL, brought about mainly by the various mergers between several vehicle manufacturing companies. John gave examples of designs being “badgeengineered” where effectively the same car was produced under different names, so that models produced by the company competed against each other in the
market place. Probus members enjoyed being reminded of the range of car models produced by BL, many of which they had owned many years ago. John gave some very entertaining anecdotes about rogue models which went to their new owners with incredible faults, such as the Triumph Spitfire with spoked wheels on the front and steel wheels on the back! So was British Leyland doomed to fail? John feels that some of the criticism levelled at the senior management was somewhat unfair, as they were all highly competent engineers and managers. The company was burdened by serious under-capitalisation, the internally competing product range and ever increasing disruption from the trade unions. In addition, successive governments mostly failed to fully grasp the enormity of running such an enterprise, so it could be argued that
British Leyland was on a hiding to nothing from its launch in 1968 to its effective nationalisation in 1975. The story behind Tewkesbury’s Medieval Banners We've probably all admired the Medieval street banners that appear in Tewkesbury during the month of June, but what do we know about them?, writes Amanda Orton. Well, the banners portray the different coats of arms attributed to notable people involved in the Battle of Tewkesbury, which took place on May 4th, 1471. It's the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society who organises the production and display of these banners. They are made from tough cotton 'duck' and then hand-painted using modern acrylic paints.
During the winter months they are part of a rolling programme of refurbishment, to keep them looking fresh, bright and colourful. Through ongoing research, members of the Society also aim to increase the number every year and there are now more than 160. The cost of hiring the banners is kept affordable and the rental income funds the banner project

At the beginning of May, the town's traders and householders are invited to the annual display and hiring of the Street Banners, which took place at the Town Hall this year. There's always much excitement among those hiring the banners. Lots of us know which banners we would like in advance, so there are always the nail biting moments until you find out if you've been successful and no-one else got there before you! It's always fun to see ‘business appropriate’ ones like the azure banner with three mackerel on it, resplendent outside one of the fish and chip shops. And of course, some of us have an affiliation to either the Yorkists or the Lancastrians too and that is reflected in our choice of banner. All the work on the banners, from painting at the weekly sessions, on a Monday afternoon in Elizabeth Wyatt House, Barton Road, to erection (a good job for those who don't mind shinning up a ladder), marketing and rental collection is all carried out by a team of willing volunteers. The Battlefield Society have also produced a book (now in its third edition) for those wishing to find out more about the banners and the people they represent. Once again, we are indebted to local historian Derek Round for sharing photos from his archives with us. Above are the former almshouses in Gander Lane, which were demolished in 1966. A plaque on the building bore the inscription ‘These houses purchased w 60 pounds given by Ed Richardson, Gent, in 1651. Repaird by the stock of y Publick Charities in 1739.’ The replacement homes (below) also bear an incription: ‘Richardson’s Almshouses. These houses were built in 1966 on the site of the original house.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater This story is based upon something I heard a Masai warrior tell me when I visited his village near Nairobi, writes David Slater. He had been well educated in the city and had attended university, eventually becoming a teacher. He missed his village and family and after a few years returned to the village and once again made it his home. I don't think I have ever seen a more content person in my life, before or since, yet, looking round, he had none of the luxuries that make our lives more comfortable and bearable and which many would not consider it possible to live without. He had a smile which lit up the world. He had children, five of them between 2 and 14 years of age, a wife and his elderly father lived with them. There were troubles for the family. A lion had attacked his cattle and two cows had been killed. Also, a few nights back,a small herd of elephants ransacked his crop of maize (sweetcorn). His elderly father, too, had been very sick but
happily was showing some signs of recovery. Eamon, for that was the English name that he had adopted as it was easier for his student colleagues to say when he was at university than his native name, invited me and my friends into his hut to meet his family. The hut was constructed of mud and cattle dung on a wooden framework. It had no windows. The fragrance was quite intense but he kept smiling. One thing I noticed. Just outside the doorway to the hut was a bush with red berries and shiny green leaves. Before entering the hut Eamon made a point of stroking the bush with both hands, kissing his hands and then entering. When I grew accustomed to the darkness I could make out a group of people sitting round the glowing fire. Yes. Here were his children, his wife and his father. Eamon told us to sit down and then went round each member of his family giving them a hug and a kiss. We talked a while. The children sang a beautiful Masai song and the old man, with
THE TROUBLE BUSH his son translating, told us how proud he was of his son and how thrilled he was that we were visiting their home. He said it was making him feel much better because we were obviously people who cared. Time passed far too quickly and it was time to get back into the safari bus and go back to our base. We said our goodbyes and with some real reluctance left the hut. Once again Eamon stroked the bush and kissed his hands. I couldn't hold back I just had to ask him what he did that for Eamon laughed. “ That is my Trouble Bush,” he said readily. “Like everyone else I have my problems and worries. I am worried about the lions attacks and the elephants. “I worry about whether it is going to be possible to stay here. I worry about the health of my father. BUT those are MY troubles. “They are not for my family to have to worry about so when I come here to go into my home I always brush my troubles off onto the bush and then say “Thank
You “for all the blessings I have in my life. “It wouldn't be fair for the bush to carry all my troubles, though, so when I come out I collect them off the bush and once again say “ Thank
You” for all my many blessings. “I have to admit, though, something strange seems to happen every single time. I never seem to have as many problems to collect as I left there before I went into my home! That's family magic for you!”
And we drove away back to our very material and cynical world. I will never forget that ready smile, that love, that sincerity, that belief. May I, may we all, have some of that Masai warrior's humanity and wisdom. David Slater
