Cotswold Markets support Poppy Appeal show Members of the Tewkesbury branch of the Royal British Legion Club have benefitted from the generosity and support of market operators, Cotswold Markets, for a second year running, writes Shelby Powell. The Tewkesbury charity, which has its base in Church Street, has benefited from being offered a stall in the high street during this year's popular Food, Drink, Arts and Craft market. A similar arrangement was also offered to the charity in 2014. This has helped British Legion members promote their forthcoming fundraising charity show to visitors to the popular market. The show, We Salute You! is taking place at

The annual rally of the Model Steam Road Vehicle Society takes place in Tewkesbury on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June. Working model steam engines will be run across the show site, and even through the town giving a great opportunity to see these amazing machines in action. There will be a ride-on model railway, stalls, sideshows and refreshments as well as birds of prey and traction engine rides. Thousands of visitors flocked to Toddington last month for a trip back in time to the 1940s. ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds’ - organised by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway - drew together hundreds of re-enactors, clad in period military uniform and ‘civvies’, together with authentic vehicles and artefacts from the period. The GWR ran an intensive steam service, and there was music and laughter throughout the weekend, re-capturing that ‘wartime spirit’. The whole event was a resounding success for volunteers and visitors alike. One reviewer on TripAdvisor said “Every single member of the staff should be complimented on their attitude.” Dates for next year have already been fixed: 23rd/24th April 2016. So make a note in your diary now, then put that light out!

It is not just Nelson Street which had been widened to cope with modern traffic Chance Street paved the way in the 1950s. To widen the street, more homes had to be demolished – they were known as Providence Place, although in fact it was a terrace of six houses on the west side of the street behind no. 49. (Photo D). Each house boasted one room in each of three levels – with an outside kitchen, share of yard, wash house but there were concerns in 1952 that two families were sharing a “filthy” lavatory. A year before the council decided that the houses should be “disinfested”. However in better times, they were inhabited by respectable families – one of them being that of Halsey Freeman, the famous local photographer who took this splendid photograph of his son, Neville, playing with his hoop outside the houses. (Photo A) We can do it because Neville was born in 1926 and his photogra-

pher father died aged only 39 in 1930. It was Behind Providence Place (Photo A) you can see the houses in Chance Street which still exist – and Neville is probably playing near the modern lamp-post in (Photo B) The decision to demolish Providence Place was made in 1955, allowing the widening, not only of Chance Street, but also the pavement. A far cry from the map of 1808 (Photo C) when Chance Street was No. II Road with East Street and Oldbury Road together as No. I. A word of caution – Providence Place backed on to 49 Chance Street which was also demolished - today no 49 is Holy Trinity Vicarage on the other side of the road! HISTORICAL AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED Tewkesbury Historical Society is delighted to announce that its annual Woodard Award has been presented to the Society’s membership Secretary and Webmaster, Derek Benson (pictured below). In order to choose the award, which is named after a pioneer in researching local history, THS asks the independent Chairman of the Gloucestershire Local History Forum, Dr. Steven Blake, to read all the articles published in its Annual Bulletin - and decide which one is the leader in terms of research, writing and presenting the town’s history in its wider context. Dr. Blake was very complimentary about the Bulletin and the work of his fellow writers but decided on Derek’s article “Ripples from the French Revolution in Tewkesbury”. This article has already be-en published in the journal of the British Association of Local History. It is the second time Derek has achieved this award and he has also been short-listed for the County Jerrard Award in each of the last five years. Could you design a plaque for the Pleasure Gardens? Budding artists have their chance to leave their mark on Tewkesbury’s riverside gardens A competition is being held to design a permanent decorative feature for the blank wall at the Southern end of the park, which backs on to Abbey Terrace. The Friends of Victoria Pleasure Gardens are hoping to encourage people of all ages to participate and create something which will enhance the area for years to come. The feature may be a plaque - or any other form of decoration - and should be made of any durable substance. The design should be about 26 inches along its longest edge/diameter.

AN EVENING OF FINE WINES Teddington Stores held their first Food & Wine Society evening this week, embracing all things Spanish! The run-through for the evening began with a gran brut reserva cava to toast Teddington Stores and their half-year anniversary. There were liqueur cocktails, delicate whites and hearty reds to enjoy. The Spanish tapas showcased the great produce available in store and set off the fabulous wines. Expert advice came from the ‘host nose’, Lindsay Poole, with some authentic inspiration for serving and cooking Spanish cuisine from ‘Fernando’ (their Spanish food importer). Owner, Deborah Thompson, was on hand to ensure everyone enjoyed their evening in store, newly nominated as Best Newcomer by Cotswold Life magazine. The atmosphere was welcoming, relaxed and informative. A lovely way to while away a mid-week evening and learn a thing or two about some great artisan wines and food. BISHOPS CLEEVE STREET FAIR GOES CONTINENTAL Mark Cummings from Radio Gloucestershire is opening the event at twelve noon on Sunday 14th June with Radio Winchcombe broadcasting live on the day. There will be a U3a history group presentation and a slide show of old pictures from Bishops Cleeve in the past in the Tythe Barn and refreshments will be available on the ground floor. In Church Road there will be the fair, stalls, bands, dancing groups and Morris Men. Lidi field will have an Animal Shelter Dog Show and a demonstration from the Scouts. The Royal Oak will have a live band and are

going to provide some continental foods. There will be a Teddy Bear Jump from St Michaels Church with teas in the church. Other entertainment will include the Dynamic Impact Majorettes, demonstrating marching, static displays and baton twirling. Brass will be playing a variety of traditional band melodies as well as the Tewkesbury Town Band and Cleeve Harmony will be demonstrating their musical abilities. The Gloucestershire Morris Men will be bringing the dances of traditional olde England whilst Danceworks and Dance Tec will bring ballet, modern, tap and street, contemporary dance and more. There will be a shop window competition and a vehicle show at Bovis. This years nominated charities will be Shipway Court, St Michaels Hall, Denley Hall and a village defibrillator. AGAINST THE ODDS Reader Bradley Maber took part in the London Marathon after recovering from an operation on his knee. He wrote in to tell us in his own words how it all went. The marathon went really well. The screw in my leg did not come out!!! The race itself was an amazing experience but the last five miles were extremely tough and I was glad to make the finish. I managed to complete the marathon in three hours thirty three minutes and twenty three seconds. Our total funds raised is around the £2300 mark. The support from my family and friends has been overwhelming. I would like to thank my wife Kate and children Herbie and Phoebe for their continued support, Kemerton Stores and Post Office and all the customers and all of my customers and friends who have donated and helped me train I also recently competed in the Tewkesbury half marathon and completed this in a time of one hour twenty nine minutes and thirty two seconds. TEWKESBURY OLD BOYS ISSUE A DINNER DATE INVITATION Surviving students from a former Gloucestershire grammar school are calling for fellow 'old boys' to join them in a bid to boost the numbers attending the annual dinner get-together. Details of about 150 former pupils of Tewkesbury Grammar School are held by the school's Old Theocsbrian Society - formed in the 1920s - while the school itself was founded in 1576 when endowed with £20 a year from Mr Ferrers. “Our main aim is to halt the decline we have seen in recent years in

the number of old boys attending our annual dinner. Last year we were very pleased to see 49 at the dinner, and while 32 sent their apologies I would really be delighted if everyone attending this year's event - at the Gupshill Manor Hotel on Saturday, September 26 - could bring another Old Theocsbrian with

The Medieval Festival is getting bigger and better

Tewkesbury Medieval festival has long been know as one of the Europe’s most celebrated medieval festivals. This year, its 32nd, will be bigger and better than ever. There will be the usual re-enactment, of the battle of Tewkesbury, fought on the site of the original 1471 conflict, living history camps, a bustling and colourful medieval market, music and other entertainment for all ages. Dragons and giants will stalk the field and there will be games, circus skills workshops and story tellers to entertain younger visitors. New for this year will be a demonstration of mounted hunting games (Saturday only) and on Sunday a grand carnival parade will make its way through the town, with around 300 participants including bands, giant figures and much,much more. It will start mak-

ing its way along the High Street at 11am, making its way back to the festival site. It all happens on Saturday and Sunday, July 11-12, on fields off Lincoln Green Lane, post code GL20 5TT, and will be clearly marked from all the main entrances to the site. Car parking is available few minutes walk from the site, as is a public camping area. Entry to festival is free, with a small charge for parking. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

A CLASSIC LANDSCAPE

This month’s walk is slightly different to our usual ramble in that it is entirely within the grounds of a stunning National Trust property, writes Jack B. Walker. An entrance fee is payable (free to NT members) but this enchanting stroll through an historic and ever changing landscape is certainly well worth it. Dogs on leads are allowed in the grounds. In season, Croome Park is open daily from 10am.

! The Lake and grotto at Croome Park

Croome Park (off the A38) was laid out for the Earl of Coventry in the 18th century, by the celebrated landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Park at the visitor centre, which itself is a restored wartime hospital. Follow the path as it turns left through some shrubs, to emerge with the Church ahead of you. (1). Bear right down a grassy path and through a small gate to enter the shrubbery (2) with its wide variety of trees and plants. Pass the ‘Temple Greenhouse’ then ahead through an archway (3) and go over the elegant footbridge ahead of you. On the opposite bank, bear right (4) and follow the path which skirts the ornamental lake. Cross over the next footbridge (5) on to a small island and over another bridge to enter a small wood. After a short distance the path emerges by the side of the lake and reaches a grotto.

Carry on past the archway and first footbridge and go through a gate into the main parkland area. Keep on the path towards Croome Court, which is open to the public from 11am (except Tuesdays),(6). Passing Croome Court on the left, walk around to the rear of the property and look for the signs to the Rotunda. Keeping the fence on your left, walk through a gap in a wall to enter the home shrubbery. Go up the slope to the Rotunda, which affords excellent views over the open parkland and beyond. Retrace your steps to the house and point 6. Go up the drive way, which curves left and up towards the church. Look for the path to the right which leads to the ice house (7); this is worth the short detour. The redundant church may also be visited. Retrace your steps back to the visitor centre, where there is a cafe, and picnic areas. More details www.nationaltrust.org.uk

WHY NOW? At this, the start of the busiest time of the year for wildlife rescues, mammals and birds are brought in for a wide variety of reasons: nests (birds, hedgehogs and even rabbits) are accidentally disturbed when gardens are being spruced up after the winter months, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. It is important to check hedges, trees, bonfire piles, flower borders, long grass and compost areas at any time of the year, but it is especially important in the spring and summer months when breeding is in full swing. One of the most frustrating things is that many jobs, which could be carried out during the late summer, autumn or even in the winter months when there is little chance of disturbing any nesting animals, are undertaken right in the middle of the peak breeding season, leading to many unnecessary casualties. We took a call recently about a nest of baby birds under some tiles on a roof. The local council had called a team of builders in to replace the fascia and soffit boards on a row of houses and having come across the nest they contacted us for

advice. The only advice that we can give in these cases is that by law the nest has to be left alone. Any active bird’s nest has legal protection and it is an offence to touch, disturb, remove or destroy it. We also received a call about a nest containing babies that had been discovered in a garden shed, on top of some tools. Rather than leaving the nest in situ until the baby birds had fledged (left the nest), the nest was removed and the babies were left on the floor. I was also horrified to see, on a recent walk in our local woods, a group of forestry workers felling trees – totally irresponsible at this time of year, with the trees being home to many species of wild birds and mammals. Surely if the trees had to be destroyed, it could have been done outside the

Tara is tops

Young poet Tara Fulford, 13, has been chosen as the winner of Tewkesbury’s WW1 children’s competition. The competition was organised by John Savory on behalf of Tewkesbury RAF Veterans Association last August as part of the town’s World War One commemorations. John invited youngsters to draw, paint or write about the 1914-18 conflict and submit their work for judging. Tara’s poem caught the eye of judges, and was awarded the top prize. For her efforts Tara

was treated to tea in the Mayor’s Parlour before collecting her prize and being presented with a bouquet of flowers. Tara is pictured with former Town Mayor Chris Danter. This year the town will be marking this year’s anniversaries of world conflicts with commemorative events during the weekend of 1st and 2nd August.

GOOGLE SEARCH CHANGE TO DOWN GRADE NON RESPONSIVE WEBSITES Websites which look bad on mobile phones will drop down Google’s search rankings - cutting off a major traffic source. Google is due to make a major update to its mobile search algorithm in a move expected to cause ripples across the web. Websites not deemed mobile-friendly will be dropped down the search rankings, dramatically reducing the number of visitors to a site. Microsoft and the European Union are among the organisations likely to be negatively affected by the changes to Google’s secret search formula. People can check whether their website is classed as mobile-friendly by Google by entering the web address https://www.google.com /webmasters/tools/mobi le-friendly/. Some search engine ranking experts have called the potential fallout from the changes “mobilegeddon”. A lot of small businesses are going to be really surprised that the number of visitors to their websites has dropped significantly. This is going to affect millions of sites on the web. Companies spend significant amounts of money and effort to appear high up in Google rankings, with places on the first page of results highly prized. Text that is too small to read on a

mobile device, plus links that are too close together, are among the reasons some sites will fall down the mobile ranking list. Google announced the changes in February, so companies have had just two months to prepare. The firm said: “This change will affect mobile

King’s visit celebrated by local artist Local antique dealer and artist Sean Neuvel has faithfully painted the portrait of King Richard III, and the artwork can be seen at Replay Vintage in Church Street. King Richard Plantagenet was Duke of Gloucester and fought at the Battle of Tewkesbury on the side of the victorious and his body was recently found buried in a car park in Leicester. Sean, who has created life size historical

characters in art before, thought there may be a link between the King who had stayed in Tewkesbury and the coincidently named Plantagenet House where Replay Vintage is situated.

GOING, GOING, ALL GONE! On Saturday 25th April, Tewkesbury School held its Auction of Promises which proved to be a great success raising a grand total of £4,509.93. The auction was organised on a budget of zero with all the promises, donations and raffle items generously donated by local businesses, parents, community, governors and staff. The evening, which was run by a team of Sixth Form students, saw an audience gather for the exciting, fast paced auction of 53 ‘promises’. The ‘promises’ included a portrait photography session with Jack Boskett; a meal for two with wine and an overnight stay at Hatherley Manor; a Porsche driving experience day at Silverstone; leisure passes for Tewkesbury Park, plus many more exciting items. A wonderful, luxury hamper was raffled during the evening and the lucky winner was a parent. There was a great atmosphere on the night and the event was enjoyed by all who attended. The money has been raised to purchase more outdoor seating for our students and it is hoped that the benches will be ordered prior to May half term.

Ian Coleman, Chair of Governors at the school said, “We are all delighted with the success of our first Auction of Promises which raised a fantastic sum of money. The Governors would like to extend their thanks to everyone

AWARD FOR SEVERN UNIT AT TEWKESBURY'S “BIG WEEKEND” Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was kept busy throughout Tewkesbury's Big Weekend and played a prominent part in all the water based activities ranging from gathering in plastic ducks from the duck racing to helping at the bell boat races and leading the parade of decorated boats. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We also had the responsibility of looking after safety around the river during the two days and we were honoured to be presented with an award and a mascot from Avon Navigation Trust to thank us for our efforts. It was an extremely busy weekend and we had

many challenging tasks to contend with and I am pleased that the Unit's training stood us in good stead and it all went well”. He added “The Unit’s ‘Water Display Team’ was also out twice giving displays on the river showing how to right an overturned dinghy and rescuing casualties from

the water using their rescue cradle. I was also invited to take part in a live interview on BBC Radio Gloucester and present cups to winning Bell Boat Teams. With 12 members of the Unit on duty over the weekend it was an exciting team effort.”

TEDDINGTON PLAYING FIELD GETS A MAKE-OVER In May 2014 a group of Teddington mums got together with the Parish Council to raise money for additional playground equipment at the Orchard Park Playing Field. The Playing Field Improvements Group recently announced that they have been successful in gaining substantial funding from the National Lottery's Awards for All, Tewkesbury Borough Council's Active Together Grant and the Gloucestershire Playing Field Association.

The improvements include the creation of a path giving access to the entire field and all the facilities. The new features will include a large play tower/climbing frame with slide, an extended adventure trail, a zip-wire, refurbished swings, a boules pit and new seating & picnic tables.

The new playground equipment is being officially unveiled at a Grand Opening Day on Saturday 6 June, with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony performed by the village’s local County Councillor Vernon Smith who has been involved with the project from the very start.

Tewkesbury’s second-hand bookshop, Bookworm, celebrates its fifth birthday in June, and has big plans for its future in the high street. To mark the shop’s significant milestone, book fans are invited to a relaunch party taking place on Monday 8 June. Anna Saunders, Executive Director and founder of the Cheltenham Poetry Festival is supporting the event, which is open to the public from 11 am. Anna will be on hand to chat about her experience of running such a large and successful literature event in the Cotswolds which co-incidentally is also in its fifth year. Over the next few months volunteers will be making a few changes and improvements at Bookworm. “We are re-inventing how we organise the bookshop”, comments spokesperson Karen Brennan “The way we shop has changed, busy people do their shopping online. We are more particular about how we choose to spend our leisure time. So taking into account these factors we have to offer

more than shelves of books. “Footfall in Tewkesbury is often unpredictable,” continues Karen “the summer months are the busiest with additional visitors to the town, and we need to make sure we cater for their needs too”. The idea for an independent second-hand bookshop in the town centre came about after the closure of the wellestablished Oxfam Bookshop in the high street in 2010. Former Oxfam bookshop volunteer Karen Brennan felt there was still a place for a small specialist charity bookshop in Tewkesbury, and with a small group of core volunteers set up Bookworm in an empty retail unit at the south end of the high street near to The Cross. Bookworm relies on donations from the public, and through the sales of books, CDs, DVDs and stamps makes annual donations to

The shop works in partnership with the Pied Piper Appeal helping to sell their stamps at the shop to support the Appeal. Bookworm is now offering light refreshments and homemade cakes which are proving popular, and during the summer months a range of specialist homemade ice creams in flavours such as apricot, lemon curd and damson will be on the menu. SHAME ON OUR STARS IN THEIR EYES ‘LITTERBUGS’ CONTESTANT SUPPORTS THE TEWKESBURY POPPY APPEAL ANTS RANT by Anthony Stockman

Britain over the last 25 years has become a disgusting, toxic, flyblown nation of litterbugs; what’s worse is that up to now it seems no-one cares. The facts are eye-watering, since, every day, more than 2 million items of rubbish are dumped across the country! Drive along some of our minor roads, especially country lanes and you’ll see, flung out of car windows, a trail of fast food cartons, containers, bags and cups from major fast food and coffee shops; you name it; you’ll find it! And it gets worse: night time attracts the fly tippers! Overnight a fresh pile of old tyres appear in a gateway, or there’ll be an old mattress, a bed frame, fridges, washing machines chucked into a field and even the other day – a loo and cistern! One quote I saw was that ‘’our verges look no better than Naples after a refuse collectors strike.’’ And then there are our pavements, covered in 50p sized black spots of chewing gum spat out by those that don’t give a damn. Do that in the States and you’ll face an instant $100 fine. Those spots of chewing gum kill thousands of birds every year, because they starve to death after getting it stuck in their beaks. Many dog owners who walk their dogs in the country are just as guilty; yes, they pick up the mess, but then leave the bag dangling in the hedge like some perverse Christmas decoration! Littering is a total disgrace and has become a national epidemic – and it’s high time we took a very serious view of it as they do in America. When I was in California, I couldn’t help but notice how clean everywhere was – and how pleasant it made the great outdoors. I enquired how this had come about and how they’d achieved such a change. The answer was simple: rigidly enforced fines and court appearances to those that offended. $250 for a first offence, rising to $1000 for deliberate fly tipping! Coming back to this country was a rude awakening, as the moment the car pulled out of the tunnel at

Heathrow, there it was – detritus city! So what does this ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude cost this country? Well, at the turn of the century, clearing up cost £4 million a week, roughly £200 million a year. Guess what – now it costs 5 times that! Close to a £billion! And that’s money badly needed elsewhere, so we need to do something about it - and do it fast, before Britain becomes the biggest dustbin in Europe! It is my my opinion (and that of many others), that litterbugs should pursued, fined, named and shamed. The laws should be rigorously enforced, as they are in the US and perhaps then, only then, our towns and our country may become pleasant places to be in again.

Talented singer Annie Martin, who is due to take to the stage at The Roses Theatre this month to help raise funds for Poppy Appeal, has recently enjoyed TV success. The Stroud based artist, who enjoys performing songs from the 1940’s era, has appeared on the hit talent show ‘Stars in their Eyes’. The show returned to our screens in January after a nine year gap and was hosted by comedian Harry Hill. Annie’s claim to fame is that she was chosen to open the first show of the 2015 series. On Sunday 28th June Annie will join a raft of talented performers in a charity variety show being hosted by

Tewkesbury branch of the British Legion. We Salute You! is billed as a ‘magical’ evening of commemorative entertainment, music and song created to mark national Armed Forces Day. Profits from ticket sales will be donated to the Poppy Appeal. FIRE ADVICE FOR A SAFER SUMMER Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue service is asking local people to stay safe this summer as they make the most of the weather and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you are camping, cooking or exploring this summer, by following some top tips you can enjoy your adventures and stay safe. The fire and rescue service is particularly keen to get the message out about safe summer campsite BBQs and are urging people to be aware of the hidden risks of carbon monoxide poisoning when using a disposable, gas or charcoal BBQ. Carbon monoxide can’t be seen, smelt or tasted but can cause lifethreatening affects, quickly and without warning. Stewart Edgar, Chief Fire Officer for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue service said, “Some of this advice is common sense however from time to time we all need reminders. Whilst we do not want to stop anyone having fun on holiday we strongly encourage you to not take risks this summer.” Cllr Will WindsorClive, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure said, “If you are planning an amazing summer exploring the county we encourage you to take a look at some safety advice first. It will help make your trip safer and more enjoyable in the long run if accidents can be avoided.” More top tips for a safe summer include: Tents • Allow at least 6m spacing between tents and caravans and ensure they are away from parked cars to reduce the risk of fire spreading • Never use candles in or near a tent – torches are safer • Keep cooking appliances away from the tent walls and never cook inside a small tent, near flammable materials or long grass; they can all set alight easily • Make sure you know how to escape by cutting your way out of the tent if there’s a fire • Make sure everyone knows how to put out clothing that’s on fire – stop, drop and roll • Don’t smoke inside tents Caravans • Fit and test a smoke alarm in your caravan • Take special care

when cooking – don’t leave pans unattended • Turn off all appliances before you go out or to bed • Make sure ashtrays are made of a material that can’t burn or topple over –never smoke in bed • Don’t dry clothes over the stove • Remove any litter and rubbish near the caravan to reduce the risk of fire spreading • Make sure the caravan is ventilated, and never block air vents, to avoid a build up of poisonous gases BBQ safety • Never take a smouldering or lit BBQ into a tent, caravan or cabin. Even if you have finished cooking your BBQ should remain outside as it will still give off fumes for some hours after use • BBQ’s need to be lit with the correct lighter fuel and placed in a position where the fire does not spread to wooden fence, sheds or conifers. Never use petrol to light a fire • Never use a BBQ inside to keep you warm • Never leave a lit BBQ unattended or while sleeping • Place your cooking area well away from your tent. Always ensure there is an adequate supply of fresh air in the area where the BBQ is being used • Only use appliances in accordance with the operating instructions • Remember the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of con-

sciousness. If concerned, seek medical advice Open Fires If you must have an open fire: • It should be downwind, at least 10m from the tent • Clear dry vegetation, leaves, etc, to form a circle of earth around the fire • Build a stack that will collapse inwards whilst burning • Do not leave fires unattended • Make sure that fires are fully extinguished after use If a fire should breakout: • Call the fire and rescue service and give the exact location • If necessary give a map reference • If this is not possible a landmark such as a farm or pub etc, will help them locate you Grass and forest fires spread rapidly • Never throw cigarette ends out of a car window – they could start a fire and ruin surrounding countryside • Don’t leave bottles or glass in woodlands. Sunlight shining through glass can start a fire. PROTECTING YOUR HOME AND CAR Over the last few weeks we have had several burglaries of dwellings and out- buildings, writes Temporary Inspector Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. The common themes have been entry gained to the rear garden and then patio doors forced or simply a brick thrown through the glass. This obviously makes a lot of noise and hopefully it will be heard by a neighbour or passer who will ring the police. There are measures you can take to make the rear of your premises more secure. The back garden is the most vulnerable part of a house and requires careful attention to security. Fences offer vital protection for a house and can deter burglars from committing a burglary. It has been said that a 2 metre (6'6") fence all around the back garden will help keep the house secure but, unfortunately, most burglars are quite athletic and such a fence can be scaled. If the fence is topped with 30 to 45cms (1218") of open-ended or other similarly weak trellising, i.e. that cannot support the weight of a human, the prospective burglar will be unable to climb it without a risk of being seen and physically breaking the trellising.

The noise of this alone and the risk of injury is a deterrent in itself. As an alternative to trellis plants can be grown along a series of wires stretched between post extensions. All types of perimeter fencing can be softened with the right species of plants thereby reducing what can often be seen as an overly aggressive method to reduce criminal opportunity. Hedges and shrubs in the front garden should be kept to a height of no more than 3' in order to avoid giving a burglar a screen behind which he can conceal himself. Gravel paths prevent a silent approach and might alert the occupier to somebody's presence. In addition to the above measures don’t make the burglars life easy should they manage to climb into your garden. Make sure any bricks or stones left over from DIY projects are secured away or re-cycled , all tools need to be securely stored in the garage or a locked shed. Any ladders stored outside in the garden need to be chained and pad-locked to a secure post. One other worrying trend which has happened twice is that vehicle keys have been removed through the letter box probably using a length of wire or a stick. Please do not leave your car keys on the stairs or hanging on a coat hook near the front door. Take you vehicle keys upstairs at night or place them in a drawer where they cannot be seen from outside. I have added a checklist of actions below which if followed will greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary.

•Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes. •Set your burglar alarm. •Make sure the side and/or back gate is locked. •Lock your shed or garage. •Make sure that any valuables are not in sight. •Put keys out of reach of letterboxes. •In the evening, shut the curtains and leave some lights on.

•Never leave car documents or ID in obvious places such as kitchens or hallways. •If you are going to be away for days or weeks at a time, you will need to take additional action, such as cancelling newspaper and milk deliveries. •Consider asking your neighbours to close curtains, or park on your drive. •Use a timer device to automatically turn lights and a radio on at night. Cathy’s Charity Challenge Local lifeguard and swimming instructor Cathy Dudfield (pictured) is taking part in her toughest challenge yet, when she competes in the Cotswold 113 Half Ironman later this month. The event, at Cotswold Water Park on Sunday 14th June, consists of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle ride and a 21.1km run Cathy, who has worked at Cascades in Tewkesbury for nearly eight years, has chosen to raise money for the charity CRY. CRY researches into heart problems in the young, as well as supporting families who have either lost or have a youngster with a heart condition. Leanne Haddrell (19872008), was a keen sportswoman who worked at Cascades as a lifeguard for almost four years. In April 2008, Leanne contracted a virus which triggered an unknown heart condition. Leanne never recovered, and sadly is no longer with us today. To help her parents come to terms with Leanne’s death, a memorial fund was set up with CRY in her name.
