PENSIONER WINGS IT FOR CHARITY Wheatpieces resident, Connie Cullingford has just celebrated her 80th birthday but rather than take life at a more leisurely pace, she has decided to take to the skies to raise money for charity, writes Shelby Powell. On Wednesday 27th July Connie will be heading over to Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton to board a Tiger Moth aircraft. But she won’t be boarding it in a conventional way; Connie will be strapped to the wings! Retired school teacher Connie is raising money for Water Aid with her wing walking adventure. After retiring, Connie and husband Tony volunteered with the Voluntary Services Overseas charity and were stationed at a school in Eritrea. Although the compound where the couple were stationed had a water supply, the families living nearby did not have access to clean water nearby. Instead

women and children were forced to walk miles to find water. "Every day 1,400 children around the world die from drinking unsafe water or because of a lack of toilets", says Connie. “The weight of water that women in Africa and Asia carry on their heads is commonly 20Kg, the same as the average UK airport luggage allowance. FAIR SUCCESS Tewkesbury's vintage fair was a big hit last month, writes Shelby Powell. Highlights enjoyed at the Watson Hall included a fashion show, vintage bus rides, a jive dance demonstration plus live musical entertainment. Visitors were offered plenty of vintage shopping opportunities rounded off with delicious homemade cakes in the pop up tea room. The event was sponsored by local businessman Stefan Roberts of RED to mark the Queen's 90th Birthday, and raised money for the Town Mayor's charity fund.

Ray’s mission is to get Tewkesbury people active Tewkesbury’s Ray Pearson, the driving force behind a fitness group on social media, is hoping everyone will enjoy more ‘get up and go’ this Summer. Fellow group member Stacey Hann told Tewkesbury Direct: “Ray is the man behind the medals and crazy challenges, and the face of the Facebook group love life get active.” “Ray is a keen runner, he's done lots of 10ks, numerous half marathons - and his craziness doesn't stop there. “He's also done a few marathons, is a keen cyclist and last year he rode to Belgium. This year he's off somewhere else. Not only that he's a leader of running fitness and run director for Tewkesbury Parkrun.” Ray’s Facebook group is a place to let everyone know what you're up to. If you run, walk, swim or do anything else active, the group wants to hear about it. “In December 2015 Ray set us all a challenge, said Stacey. “To walk run or crawl a mile a day. We had three joker days (days off) although there was a catch. You had to bank the miles up before you could play your joker.

Ray Pearson running the Bourton-on-the-Water 10k “At th end of the challenge we all received a medal. “Word got out and January’s challenge went further afield than Tewkesbury, and even Gloucestershire and the U.K.” Other challenges included a 100km, a mile a day walk, run or crawl every day during Lent and an ‘April Fool’ - five 5kms during the month. “We all managed it and again we got medals. People from all over the UK and beyond have now taken part,” Stacey added.

“Ray’s powers combined with those of his daughters (known as the Pearson Pair) have encouraged the less active to do things, and other runners to slowly take things further. “Before you know it you can be running a marathon, or being dropped off at locations and running back along canals. Don’t take time for granted It is human nature, I suppose, to waste things on occasions or even take things for granted, writes David Slater, local counsellor and therapist. Sometimes though we need to stand back and take stock and look at what we are actually doing. One thing many take for granted is TIME. I hope that this story gives some idea as to why this is a gift which should never be wasted or taken for granted Just imagine that there is a bank that credits your account each morning with £86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day is deleted. What would you do? Draw out every single pound, of course!!!! Each of us has such a bank.It has a very simple name, It is called the Bank Of Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to use and invest to good purpose. Remember, it carries over no balance. There is no such thing as an overdraft. Each day it

opens a new account specifically for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day, so if you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the “tomorrow”. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the most that you possibly can in health, happiness, and success! The clock is running. A new novel by William Boyd is always a pleasure to read. His latest, "Sweet Caress" is reminiscent of his biographical novel "Any Human Heart" which was successfully dramatised a few years ago. Once again a life story is told, this time that of Amory Clay who after W.W.1. builds a career as a photographer developing her childhood interest, nurtured by her uncle into a life times work. The narrative covers Amory's life and loves, starting with her childhood memories, school and her traumatic relationship with her father, who returns from the war a troubled man. The lives of her musical sister and her brother accompany her story. Amory's photographic life starts off with her uncle and then develops with a period in 1930's Berlin and then New York. The time periods of each section are very good as world events lead inevitably to another war that eventually sees Amory attached to American Troops assault on

Germany. Two world wars and the Vietnam war have dramatic effects on her life. Throughout this period her love life, ups and downs, are recorded as her relationships lead her career into new areas. Her story as she recounts it is told with images of her life in Barrkndale in 1977, a remote Scottish community that she moves to and savours; a safe retreat, a quite life and time to reflect. Once again William Boyd writes a beautiful narrative and his attention to historical detail and background is superb and supplementing the storyline the reader is rewarded with some of Amory's photographs to add another dimension to the book - do enjoy it. DOES IT NEED ‘RESCUING’? We are now right in the middle of the breeding season for many of our wild birds and mammals with anything from 15-30 patients a day coming in to Vale Wildlife Hospital, writes Caroline Gould. Now is the time to issue our annual advice to anyone who finds an ‘orphaned’ wild animal: • Do not assume that the animal is either orphaned or abandoned just because it appears to be alone. Often a parent will be very close by but will stay hidden when people are around. • When baby birds first leave the nest there is often a period of several days before they can fly strongly and they will spend this time hopping around on the ground and in low branches etc, exercising their wings to build strength in their muscles. During this time the parent bird/s will continue to come down regularly to feed their youngsters. • Animals such as deer fawns are normally left in a safe area of long grass or vegetation for several hours at a time while mum goes off to forage for food, so a fawn found alone is rarely orphaned or abandoned and should be left alone. • Fox cubs can be seen playing together with no sign of an adult around, but the vixen is likely to be very near, keeping an eye on the cubs but staying out of sight of any humans.

• Unlike rabbits, leverets (baby hares) are born above ground and are fully furred with eyes open and ready to run. They are born in a shallow scrape in the ground, known as a form. Leverets are only fed once or twice a day, normally at night, and the rest of the time they are left on their own in the form. If there is any sign of danger, the leverets will just sit motionless on the ground until it is safe and it is possible to walk right up to them without them running away. In most cases, they are not abandoned or orphaned and should not be picked up. For these reasons and unless the animal is in immediate danger, e.g. from a cat in the case of baby birds, please do not

For birds that are caught by a cat, it is very important that the bird receives antibiotics as soon as possible otherwise it is very likely to get septicaemia due to the masses of bacteria found in cats’ mouths. During the spring and summer months at Vale Wildlife Hospital we deal with countless calls about ducks and ducklings. Often mum has hatched out her brood in a strange place, nowhere near water e.g. in multistorey car parks, in gardens, on tall town-centre buildings. The reason for nesting away from water is

that her nest will often be safer than it would be next to a river or lake. The female will lay her eggs, usually one or two per day, but she will not sit on them and start to incubate them until she has finished laying (there can be 15 or more eggs in her brood) which means that all the eggs will hatch on more or less the same day. When all the eggs have hatched, the little ducklings are led to water by mum, which can often be a long and dangerous trek for such tiny fluff balls and this is

when many of them get into trouble. There is a high mortality rate amongst ducklings which is why ducks have such a large brood initially as it’s common for only two or three youngsters to survive. The important thing to remember during the spring and summer months is: Do not be too keen to intervene, if you are not sure what to do, please ring us for advice on 01386 882288. CLEEVE CELEBRATES THE QUEENS BIRTHDAY AT THIS YEARS STREET FAIR When its Summer, Bishops Cleeve celebrates, holding its Annual Street Fair which takes place on Sunday 12th June. FATHER’S DAY IN KEMERTON Following the huge success of last year’s event, the village of Kemerton is again opening a number of its lovely gardens to the public on Father’s Day. The event opens at 2pm and entry is only £2 per adult (children free) and, as overheard many times last year, “That’s the best value afternoon out we’ve enjoyed for a long time!” All of the gardens open to the public are located in the lower part of the village close to the parish church of St. Nicholas which will also be the venue for a concert by the Rough Diamonds Choir, renowned for their inspired performances of joyous music from around the world. Gardens open include Kemerton Court which features a fabulous

walled garden where fruit trees, vegetables, ornamental trees, shrubs and flowers flourish in perfect harmony. Next door, Upper Court is in a beautiful position with stunning views to a large ornamental lake. Just around the corner lies Old Manor, a lovely example of a 17th century timber-framed building with extensive charming gardens running down to a stream

that adults and children will love to explore. On a smaller scale, but giving great scope for ideas, gardens will be open at Rectory Farm Cottage, Digger’s Cottage and Ryeclose. Ryeclose will also be the venue for delicious home-made cakes and refreshments plus a Plant Sale held by Kemerton Gardening Club with a wide selection of locally grown

hardy border plants, shrubs and colourful annuals available. Other attractions include adequate free parking, childrens’ play activities area and a raffle with prizes including a meal for 2 at The Crown, Kemerton and a month’s free membership at Gym & Tonic. The Crown will also be serving Father’s Day lunches (book early to avoid disappointment!). The event is organized by Friends of St Nicholas Church and proceeds will go towards

essential maintenance of this beautiful church. So, put Sunday 19th June in your diary now

Treasures can be found almost anywhere, sometimes we pass them by without even noticing them. Nothing could be truer than when the Antiques Roadshow experts examined the 10’6” table that graces the reception to the Royal Hop Pole Hotel. Members of the TV crew suggested staff should take the table over to the Roadshow where it was examined by Lennox Cato, the TV furniture expert. The table, made of walnut and decorated with a holly inlay, dates from Tudor times and it was suggested that its use was to display silverware in the Tudor part of the hotel. The valuation of it was a staggering £15,000 - £20,000 and it is now being reinsured. Licensee, Linda Coxhall, said “The experts were impressed with the condition, even though it has been used for storing ketchup and mayonnaise.” This piece of history is still being used and is there for all visitors to the hotel to see and admire close up.

HISTORICALLY THRILLING DISCOVERY Mitton Manor has long been known as the situation for a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) Hospital which offered convalescence to wounded soldiers from the Western Front in WWI, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. All such hospitals were awarded a plaque as appreciation for their work – but that from Mitton Manor was missing - until recently! It was located in the Town Museum by Wendy Snarey and the Curator. We have learned that it was rescued from an almost derelict house in 1968 by “G (or C.). Long and H. Devereux” (who were these heroes?) and now we are hoping that it can be restored and available for public inspection in due course. The present owners Jan and Margaret Lucas are delighted that it has been discovered as this photograph with Curator Maggie Thornton (on the left of the picture)demonstrates.

LEGION SHOW WILL GO WITH A SWING The final line up for the British Legion show at the Watson Hall has now been announced. Tewkesbury’s 18 piece swing band, the Crescendo Big Band, will be bringing musical nostalgia to town with a medley of popular tunes from the 1940’s and the big band era on Sunday 26th June. Guest singer Simon Cromey will perform a tribute to the ‘brat pack’ singers and a traditional flag waving sing-along will be led by Tony Sheppard, former musical director for Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra. The show will be presented by Apperley resident, Bob Lee. The former radio broadcaster has the perfect pitch and tone for the job, having enjoyed an interesting career in radio spanning over several decades including presenting a music show for BBC Radio. 'Malware' is a general term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. Cyber threats are like the common cold or some other infectious virus; eventually you’re going to get sick. It’s a part of life. They’re always there, lurking just around the corner, waiting to make your life that little bit harder. Now mobile Malware is becoming an important fraud frontier that’s growing in size and sophistication. Malware can now allow control over infected devices, enabling them to obtain online banking details, emails, contacts and other personal information. Apple iPhones and Windows mobile phones are usually close to immune from malware thanks to Apple and Microsoft vetting every app before it’s made available in the relevant store. But a security company has discovered for the first time a new piece of malware that can infect iPhones by exploiting a vulnerability. Android devices are also under siege by yet

another breed of malware that affects apps on the Google Play Store. Incidents of Android lockscreen malware masquerading as apps are a growing concern to Tewktech who are forecasting an uptick in attacks. Once infected, Android users bitten by this malware appear to be locked out of their device and are forced to undergo a complex extraction of the app to win back control of their phone or tablet.

SPORTING TROPHY FOR TWYNING CHILDREN Twyning School for 5 –11 year olds, is right in the heart of Twyning village. You only have to be near the school to know that it is a vibrant place with lots going on. The most recent parent survey (run by the Governors in Spring 2016) showed that parents are very happy with their child’s progress, the wider curriculum and the way their child is cared for. You will see from local papers Twyning children picking up trophy after trophy in local sporting events...this is as a direct result of concerted efforts by the staff and children to improve healthy living and participation in exercise and sports. The logo for the school is ‘ACE: Achieve , Create , Enjoy !’ because the staff believe a good and rounded education cannot be measured by SATs results alone, though the children do well there too. Our Yr6 children go on to several different secondary schools in the area, recently Tewkesbury School, Hanley Castle, Denmark Road, Kings in Gloucester or Worcester, Pates, and Tommy’s. Like many small schools, Twyning is organised into 4 classes to cover 7 year groups :

Reception for 15 children, then 3 further classes. The regularly upgraded computer suite is also used by preschoolers who walk up the road from playgroup. Some things don’t change though: the Twyning children still play rounders on the village green, where they also hold their annual sports day. Funding in small rural schools continues to be a problem. Different county councils allocate different amounts to Education, and Gloucestershire CC is one of the least generous. Twyning Governors have written to our MP to fight our corner, and this issue is being debated in Parliament. Academisation is still on the agenda but Twyning has not decided yet how to proceed.

Tewkesbury Sea Cadets has had a busy few weeks with awards and birthday celebrations. On the 12th April, Sarah Griffiths who chairs the Unit’s Management Committee was presented with the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire’s Award for great and valuable services to the community. The citation to her award stated “For over ten years she has been a major contributor to the future of young people in the Tewkesbury area and passionate about what the Sea Cadets achieve in preparing young people for life. Then on the 21st April, Tewkesbury Sea Cadets marked the Queen’s 90th Birthday by lighting a beacon that could be seen for miles. The Sea Cadet Corps is proud to have the Queen as its Patron. The ship’s company of the local unit reflected with their chaplain on the Queen’s devotion to duty and a prayer for her was offered. It was then time to light the beacon, while the Commanding Officer led cadets, staff and parents in a rousing three cheers for Her Majesty! History was then made when Sam Bailey became the first young person to receive a new Award. At the Town Mayor Making Ceremony on the 16th May, Able Cadet Bailey received the Tewkesbury Town Community Service Award in recog-

ONE GLORIOUS SUNNY DAY A real treat lay in store for visitors when the Antiques Roadshow came to Town. Held in the stunning grounds behind Tewkesbury Abbey on the banks of the river Swilgate, hundreds, maybe thousands came to see the BBC experts give advice, opinions and values on family treasures and Heirlooms. For many it seemed like a great day out, at a museum or gallery where history and provenance was revealed by some of the best experts in the business. Tewkesbury folk were there, in force, there were some ups and some downs during the valuations but for most it was a rare but nice event. The programme should be screened later this year. TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATES £6,300 HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND GRANT Tewkesbury Medieval Festival has received a Heritage Lottery Fund Sharing Heritage grant of £6,300, it was announced today. The grant money will fund a greatly enhanced festival programme full of interesting articles on Tewkesbury’s medieval heritage and 15th Century life. There will be improved signage, a better exhibi-

tion tent and also funding for extra activities at

the special school’s day. Carnival workshops are also being offered to two extra Primary Schools to enable them to take part in the festival parade on Sunday 10th July. One of the schools will be concentrating on symbols and coats of arms of the House of York while the other will work on Lancastrian themes. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival stages the annual free Medieval Festival and re-enactment of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, one of the last major battles in the War of the Roses, and promotes Tewkesbury as a place of

historic importance. Geraldine Liddy, festival treasurer said “the schools day, started in 2014 with another Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and the community parade held for the first time last year really bring the medieval history of Tewkesbury alive for the hundreds of local children taking part. The festival brings a great many highly knowledgeable people to Tewkesbury and a better programme and exhibition tent will allow us to share some of that knowledge with our visitors”.

THE BIG WEEKEND ROUNDUP IN PICTURES Tewkesbury celebrated the annual Big Weekend both in the town and on the river. Numerous events and activities provided family fun and community spirit. A first this year was a river trip on the boat Conway Castle which mixed a pleasant evening river cruise with bingo on board for

The junior cricket season has started well at Tewkesbury Cricket Club with well over a hundred youngsters signed on and enjoying the Friday evening training sessions. A number of the club's young players have been selected for the District, with two players, Freya Clark and Ellis Luker, making the full County Squad for their age group.
