After months of preparation, ALDI staff are getting ready to welcome customers into their brand new Tewkesbury store, one of several now open across Gloucestershire. CENTRE UP FOR AWARD Volunteers at Wheatpieces Community Centre in Tewkesbury, which is run as a social enterprise company, are jumping for joy after being nominated for a prestigious community award. The Heart of Gloucestershire Community Awards recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals or organisations in their own communities. Through the selfless actions of a small group of hardworking individuals, the fortunes of the centre have recently been transformed. The vision is to put people before profit and provide a place for groups to meet at affordable rates. With a vast range of activities on offer, the centre has also improved the well being and quality of life for local people spanning across all generations. Around thirty different groups and clubs regularly use the facilities, and over 1,000 individuals per month pass through the doors. Olympic celebrations at Mitton Manor Primary School

SCHOOL’S OLYMPIC SPIRIT Pupils and staff at Tewkesbury’s Mitton Manor Primary School marked the run in to the London Olympics with their own special celebration last month. The school’s deputy head, Sam Taylor, said: “This term, as part of our Skills Based Curriculum, we are doing a whole school

theme linked to the Olympics, allowing us to highlight their importance through the activities we plan. “Last month's cere-

mony was a way of officially starting our topic the children worked together as a team (one of the Olympic values) and helped to create a dance. “We will end our topic with a closing ceremony later in the term.” Different year groups will be working together on a range of Olympic based activities. They will be given the chance to take part in educational visits, multi-cultural musical experiences and to try new sports. Visitors will be coming into the school to support the topics.

BLACK & WHITE FEVER AT THE ANCHOR The annual Ska music festival at Tewkesbury’s Anchor 1774 Inn proved to be another great crowd puller. From 4pm until the wee small hours, revellers got into Saturday the groove and danced to the live sounds of Ska’d, The Revolvers and Ska Finger, while DJ Robbie Skinny Edwards span the discs. Ska, a fusion of Jamaican and American roots music, first came to prominence in the 1960s. It enjoyed a revival in the 70s and 80s, through cult ‘two tone’ bands such as Madness and The Beat. If the good humoured Anchor’s crowds are anything to go by, Ska is still going strong in Tewkesbury too!

ABBEY LAWN COTTAGES IN TEWKESBURY’S HISTORY Simon Lawton, curator of the John Moore Museum, will be giving an insight into the role of some of Tewkesbury’s historic Tudor timber framed buildings this month. Two one hour talks will be held at the museum on Saturday 16th June, at 11am and 2pm. The historic John Moore Museum and the beautifully restored Merchant's House nestle amongst the Abbey Cottages, a continuous row of fifteenth century timber-framed houses. The talks, which each last around one hour, will look at how the Church Street properties were built, by whom and for what purpose. Visitors will learn about A frames, wattle and daub and find out about what role these buildings played in Tudor Tewkesbury. GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE MYSTERIES OF THE DEEP! The Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service undertook one of their more unusual river rescues recently. Tewkesbury Lock Keeper Bob Scarrott asked if the unit could locate and rescue a bicycle that had been swept off the deck of a hired narrowboat. The volunteers certainly didn’t expect to find such an odd collection of things at the bottom of the river. It appeared that the narrowboat was moored by the Black Bear, but somehow got under the nearby willow tree and lost the bicycle into the river as the tree branches were very low. Head of unit Nic Price said “We are always pleased to help out, and were sorry to hear that a visiting boater on holiday had lost their bicycle overboard. “We set out on one of our Monday training evenings with a crew in our Gemini inflatable to do our best to locate and recover it. “The job took longer than expected as after only the second sweep with our grappling iron, we brought up a bicycle. “But this one was

Next an old metal foot scraper was discovered, closely followed by an ancient Kwiksave shopping trolley - complete with the basket full of freshwater mussels from the bottom of the river! “Eventually we reached our goal and retrieved the bicycle in

question, which we left with Bob Scarrott on the lock along with the rest of the items. “It was amazing what we found in a small area of water in such a short time and makes you wonder what else is on the bottom of the river. “The grateful owner of the bicycle called in at the lock to collect his property the next weekend and we were pleased we could help. “Fortunately this all took place before the river came into flood.”

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ARE TELLING YOURSELF When you tell yourself you can’t do something, you’ll generally believe it and live by it, writes local therapist David Slater. For example, suppose you constantly told yourself “I can’t get any work done around here because the walls are too bright.” That may sound silly, yet when it’s repeated often enough you’ll become absolutely convinced that the walls are preventing you from getting your work done and you will do very little as a result. The sad fact is that when you tell yourself you can’t, you won’t, no matter how flimsy the excuse may be. Fortunately, the same dynamic also can work in a positive way. Think about it !

When you tell yourself often enough that you can, you will. Sounds too simple to be true BUT it is ! Think of all the things you’ve avoided doing because you told yourself you couldn’t do them. Now just imagine what would happen if you applied that same power of suggestion toward being productive and effective, toward getting things done. A critical, fundamental initial step toward any achievement is to tell yourself you can do it. It’s simple. “I can do this.” It’s positive. “I can do this.” And it works. Put the power of your own belief to work for you. Tell yourself you can.

MUSIC IN THE GARDEN Rhythm in the garden design is akin to the beat or pulse in music which most of us instinctively recognise when listening, writes Ernest Bratt. The 'beat' moves us along through the piece towards the finale. In a garden elements of a design can be arranged so that one feature leads effortlessly one to another, thus creating a rhythm. The eye is led on a journey of exploration which can be achieved by the repetition of planting. Sometimes we fall into the trap of purchasing one of each type of our favourite plants and then wondering why these look disjointed. If you can plant in odd numbers (threes and fives) to create drifts and repeat diagonally the planting across the garden you will create rhythm. Repetition of shapes also creates rhythms. When planning a new feature such as an octagonal greenhouse repeat this shape elsewhere, maybe in a raised bed. Even a straight line has a rhythm. If your garden is long and narrow, be wary of a straight path up the mid-

dle as it will accelerate the eye to the bottom of the garden.

PLAY TIME WILL BE BACK THIS SUMMER Play on the Park will be running its popular Summer Play Scheme during the School holidays, after concerns about funding nearly resulted in it being cancelled, writes Shelby Powell. The Play Scheme is run from the well equipped Jubilee II Centre (next to the Queen Margaret Primary School) in Priors Park and also operates a Before and After School club during term time. The facilities are open to all local children aged four to eleven years. Thanks to a local 'Community Wish' competition, the Play Scheme has been awarded just over £500 which will fund two weeks of activities and events for young children. BARNSTORMING ON BREDON

Distance: approx. 3.25 miles, moderate climbs. Car Parking: by the Catholic Church, Kemerton. Refreshments: The Crown Inn, Kemerton. Snacks also available from Kemerton Stores. Map not to scale: OS sheet 190 recommended.

This month we return to Bredon Hill for a lofty ramble, taking three old stone barns as our markers. Park at the roadside near the Catholic Church in Kemerton (busy on Sunday mornings). The village can also be easily reached by the 540 bus service from Tewkesbury. Walk up the lane with the Church to your left, and turn first left into Wing Lane (1). At the Tjunction turn right, and walk up the road until it bears right just after Daffurn’s Orchard on your left. Look for a farm gate ahead of you (sometimes left open) and walk straight ahead up a stony track. (2). Eventually you will reach Pad Barn. A bench by the side of the barn is a good spot to rest and admire the views below: Gloucester, Tewkesbury and the Malverns can usually be seen - with May Hill and the distant Welsh hills beyond. Carry on past the barn, until you see a narrow waymarked path on your left (3). Take this path and look for a

Go over the style and keep ahead: you will see a track coming up from the left over some rough ground (pictured above) After the paths merge, go ahead into a small wood, on emerging (5) go diagonally across a field on the right. On reaching the corner, go into the next field and proceed upwards with the field boundary to your left, until you reach the remains of Sundial Farm (6). Turn right and walk ahead with the restored barn on your left (look up to

see the sundial). This grassy yard is another spot to relax and enjoy the views. After passing the barn keep straight ahead with the hedge on your left hand side, until you meet a bridleway (7), one of the main routes leading to the summit of Bredon Hill. Turn right and go down the hill, keeping the woods on your left. Go through the gate and note the quarry on your right: much of the material used to build the drystone walls and houses about these parts was taken from places

like this. The path now descends between some trees, and as it emerges bears slightly right and down towards another barn. This is known as the Packing Sheds: they were used extensively in bygone times when sheep farming was one of the most important industries in the county. Passing the buildings on your left (8) go through the gate and on to a tarmac road. To your right now is an interesting building called Bell’s Castle, which was developed around some roadside Quarryman’s Cottages. The castle is reputedly named after Captain Bell who is said to have made it his home in the early part of the nineteenth century. Legend has it that Bell was a smuggler, who spread rumours of ghostly goings on to deter prying eyes from noting his nocturnal activities! Keep walking down the lane - rather steep in parts - and eventually you will come back into Kemerton and St Benet’s Church.

COHABITATION LAW - WHAT LAW? The Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 protects married couples in their financial and pension issues if divorcing. The Civil Partnership Act 2004 protects same sex couples who enter into a Civil Partnership if separating in more or less the same way. So what protection is there for cohabiting couples? STREET FAIR TO MARK QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE Bishop’s Cleeve Street Fair Committee decided that the event’s theme this year should mark the historic milestone which the Queen has reached in her reign, so it has been planned to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in style. Entertainments and events this year will have a few old favourites along with some exciting new ones. David Billingham, president of Bishop’s Cleeve Chamber of Commerce, said: “I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone, young or old, to come and join us at Bishop’s Cleeve Street Fair on Sunday 10th June. “There will be something for everyone - with a wide range of colourful and interesting stalls extending throughout Church Road and the village centre.

“Make sure you come early to see all the attraction we have. Bring the family to enjoy a brilliant day out and help support our charities.” Special guests of honour are the Deputy

Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Ceri Evans and Mrs Evans, who will open the proceedings at 12 noon. Four organisations will be beneficiaries from this year’s event. Speakeasier provides speech aids for people with MS. Headway Gloucestershire promotes the understanding of brain injuries and provides support to those affected and their families. Cleeve Carers provide a regular forum for those caring for others, and the South West Disability Swim Squad is open to all swimmers with disabilities.

TEWKESBURY BOOK TO CELEBRATE DIAMOND JUBILEE Residents in Tewkesbury Borough are being asked to cast their minds back 60 years to trigger memories of the Queen’s coronation and the year which preceded it. Tewkesbury Borough Council is creating a Diamond Jubilee booklet which will be filled with residents’ memories of that time, including the death of King George VI, the Queen’s accession to the throne and the Queen’s

coronation. The council is asking residents to send memories and/or photographs by email to events @tewkesbury.gov.uk or to send them in writing to the council’s offices on Gloucester Road. Alongside each memory, the council is after additional information such as where people were, who they were with, what they were wearing in 1952, how they marked the Queen’s acces-

sion to the throne and how they felt at the time. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952, although her coronation did not take place until the following year. The Queen was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 2nd 1953 in front of 8,000 guests. The memories and photographs submitted will be collated into a booklet which will be printed and uploaded to the council’s website.

WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE The recent weather patterns have once again been playing havoc with the lives of our wildlife, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue at Beckford. From a very warm and dry March leading to the early breeding of many birds, to one of the wettest Aprils on record causing localised flooding and many cases of animals such as fox, badger and otter cubs, to name but a few, being washed out of their homes. What surprises some people however, is that our changeable climate and all the rain that it has brought recently can often have a negative impact on water birds, particularly at this time of year. We heard of many cases of nests being washed away as watercourse levels rose. One such case was that of a pair of swans in Tewkesbury, where they have nested for several years. Local residents had been watching them building their nest and

As the river rose the nest very soon became flooded and unusable and, although the parent birds were not in any danger on the swollen river, the cygnets were only a few days old and wouldn’t stand a chance in the fast-flowing, strong currents of the river. Sadly, by the time we received a call for help, two of the cygnets had already been washed away but the parents and the rest of the brood were on the grass close to the water by the weir. On arrival at the scene the priority was to catch the cygnets first to stop them going onto the water which would have meant certain death for them. All four were quickly netted and the female (pen) was also caught but the male (cob) had gone onto the water and couldn’t be reached so one of the cygnets was used to coax him back onto the grass where he was rounded up and brought back to Vale

with the rest of the family. Without our intervention all the cygnets would undoubtedly have been washed away and drowned but bringing the remainder of the family into care for a few days until the river level

had dropped and then releasing them back to their territory when it was safe has ensured that hopefully the remaining cygnets will thrive and go on to have youngsters of their own in the future. HOLIDAY SICKNESS Now that summer is upon us, although you would not think so, many of our patients are thinking of going somewhere hot and dry, writes local pharmacist Peter Badham. We always find an increase in requests for advice on sickness and diarrhoea at this time of the year.At one time the only treatment you could obtain without a prescription was Kaolin and Morphine. We hardly ever sell this now, mainly because it tastes so bad! The first advice we offer now is to keep up the fluid intake. The best method is Dioralyte which is a powder you make up with water. Boil the kettle and use half a pint of water, once it has cooled off, to each sachet. Drink as much as you can and keep the balance in the fridge. Once made up a sachet lasts 24 hours. The other treatments are one of the Imodium variants. These slow the motions down, and are available in a range of different types of formulation. My favourite is Imodium Plus as it treats the diarrhoea and then goes on to treat the wind

afterwards. We keep cheaper alternatives to

Peter Badham Imodium, to save you money. Finally, some patients suffer from really bad sickness. A very clever treatment is Buccastem M, which is a tablet that dissolves in the mouth. This stops sickness very fast. FOOD AND CRAFT MARKETS ARE THRIVING IN THE LOCAL AREA Forthampton is a small rural community near Tewkesbury, with a village hall that is not used to its potential. The hall’s committee decided to promote its use more, with something to bring the local community together on a regular basis. The idea of monthly food and craft markets has proved to be the ideal solution. Forthampton’s markets started in October last year with eight stalls including vegetables, homemade pork pies, soaps, bread, cakes, pickles, cards and genealogy research. Teas, coffee and homemade cakes make the market a social occa-

sion to bring people together for a chat. Since inception markets have gone from strength to strength: last month’s had fifteen tables which included Halfords butchers, jewellery, cake stands etc. The events all contribute to the running costs of the hall and have been influential in securing a grant from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust more funds to help with

Halford, of Tewkesbury’s Halfords Butchers, said: “We have decided to run the Twyning Food and Craft Fayre primarily as an opportunity for a community event whereby local businesses can offer there wares and anyone in the community can come along for a browse or a tea/coffee cake and squash for the children. “We have supported the Forthampton Fayre and there is a lovely buzz about the place which we thought would be nice in our village too.” The next event will be in Twyning Village Hall on Saturday 30th June starting at 10.30am.

HABERDASHERY’S GREAT FIRST YEAR The Button Draw Haberdashery has enjoyed a fantastic first year and would like to thank everybody for their support and custom. The original idea of The Button Draw was to be able to provide the people of Tewkesbury and surrounding areas with the basics of a haberdashery. Due to such an amazing response to the shop and so many people knitting, sewing and mending again the stock has grown considerably. TOWN HONOURS TWO IN ANNUAL COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS Tewkesbury Chamber of Commerce for eight. In 2010 she won a Pride of Gloucestershire Award, recognising the fact that she has served her community in many ways and always strives to achieve the best for Tewkesbury.

The Tewkesbury Town Community Service Award was introduced in 1983 to recognise those who give their time for the good of people living within the parish, over a period of at least fifteen years. Two awards have been made for 2012. Colchester-born Hilary Edge moved to Tewkesbury in 1976 and attended Brownies, Guides and Rangers in the town. When her father took over as Group Scout Leader she went to help with cubs as part of her Guide Service Flash for three months, at the age of fourteen. At sixteen Hilary became a Cub Scout Instructor and two years later took out a full warrant as an Assistant Scout Leader. In 2007 she was awarded the Chief’s Scout’s commen-

who was born in 1937 in Tewkesbury High Street. In 1985 she took over the running of the Abbey Mill restaurant, which became a focal point for themed nights, weddings and other events. She ran the venture for sixteen years, drawing residents and visitors into the town year on year. Along with Brian Reeves and others, Margaret White founded Tewkesbury in Bloom, and continues to play an active role in raising funds and organising flower displays. She is also involved with organising trees and raising funds for the Festival of Christmas Lights. Margaret was a director of Gloucestershire Chamber of Commerce for nine years and

This photograph dates from about 1900 because Miss Elizabeth Jelleyman, purveyor of Tobacco, Rope and Twine (the trade of her late father) died in 1905. (Today it is ‘Age Concern’) The most significant contrast, however, is the then absence of motor traffic but the future historian will find a treasure trove of photographs of the High Street dating from the summer of 2012 All because of the Safety Scheme which is currently is the ‘Talk of the Town’. If the bookmakers are taking bets, then the pessimists will be clear favourites! However it will be history which will judge if the High Street is safer and if the dreaded carbon emissions are lower as a result of this investment.
