Situated in Kennet Close, Tewkesbury Business Park (GL20 8HF), Bumpyland has been established by Geraldine Wood and Lauren Brookes. It features three separate areas of traditional soft play, created to appeal to babies, toddlers and juniors. The baby play area has been designed to offer basic play and educational tools for prewalkers, whilst the toddler zone will stimulate 2-4 year olds. The junior play area allows for a vibrant, but safe, challenging structure for children between 5 and 12. This quality play and educational offering will be supported by a café area providing quality food and non-alcoholic beverages for parents/ carers and their children. Anton Heideck arrives in Vienna as a student, with ambitions of becoming a journalist, escaping the restrictive life of his Styrian home town where his elder brother is always the preferred son, though he, Anton, alone was still expected to join his father's sausage making business. Anton's close childhood friendship with Friedrich, who also moves to the capital, is a presence now and throughout his later life. When in Vienna, after graduating, Anton meets French woman Delphine his life is for ever changed and he comes out of his shell as their love blossoms. His career also begins to flourish, with interesting storylines about the building of the Panama canal, and a French government scandal to grab to the reader's attention, but it is now 1914 and events overtake their lives.

The novel moves forward to 1927, and we are introduced to Lena, a lone child. Though her troubled, drunken and promiscuous mother had her siblings adopted, she did bring up Lena, who grows up wondering about her father, a man called Stefan from Trieste. Lena does meet him once, but he remains always in the back of her mind as she also moves from her small town to Vienna following a young lawyer, Rudolf Plischke who she had met in the hospital where she had been working. Their relationship is strained and she eventually returns to work at the Schloss Seeblick, a sanatorium where she does find companionship, becoming a valued member of the staff and leaving the disappointments of her life in the

The final strand of the novel is set in 1933. Anton again becomes a central figure in the story when he is sent by a paper to write an article about the Schloss; here their paths meet; Anton as guest, Lena as waitress and a staff member. It is also where Rudolf also reappears as an adviser to the management of the Schloss.

It is their history, and the founders of the sanatorium that transport this novel from just a story of love lost and found into a more substantially fulfilling read. The other characters within the Schloss, particularly Martha Midwinter, a daughter of one of the founders, enhance this part of the book as Sebastian Faulks brings the strands of his story together. The various main protagonists meeting, then as their lives move forward, after the Schloss, back into the maelstrom of Vienna - a politically explosive city as the post war depression fuels unrest. Sebastian Faulks is a great storyteller, and here he is on good form. A wintery title to enjoy on your summer holiday. "Snow Country" is very readable, the story-line enhanced by extra strands and sub-stories that improve the reader's enjoyment and in no way distract from the main plot. Selected by: Ian B. The business, owned by Guy Warner, builds on the fantastic success that the Warner’s team have had running food stores throughout the Cotswolds over the past fifteen years. The ribbon was officially cut by Guy’s father, local businessman, Michael Warner and children from the local primary school in Upton. MITTON W.I. At our June meeting we were visited by Jay Portman to tell us about her journey and fulﬁlling her dreams of running her own beauty business.

She told us of her wish to train to be a beautician and consequently working on cruise ships between Miami and Bermuda, at a hotel in Bermuda and eventually pursuing her wish to teach aspects of the beauty industry. It was following this that she decided to set up her own beauty company in Tewkesbury, Absolute Beauty, using only natural ingredients and a lot of love! Apart from trade shows, Jay has also had the opportunity of having a Pop-Up Shop in John Lewis. Many thanks, Jay, for an inspiring talk. Our next meeting will be a demonstration in willow craft with Jane, so please come along. No meeting in August, but in September we will be invited to try Tai-Chi with Mark. Ali Phillips, who founded the company in 2012, said: “We are delighted to extend our range of services to customers by providing them with a small parts and accessory store, as well as a new reception area and additional workshop.” Ali Phillips operated as a mobile vehicle technician for several years, beore acquiring the unit at Croft Farm to enable him to offer a comprehensive range of servicing and repairs for all makes and models at competitive rates. Increased demand for business this year has seen Ali add an additional workshop, opposite the original premises, where he now employs an additional technician and receptionist. The pop up vintage tea room was a popular attraction with delicious homemade cakes and cream teas, and visitors were welcomed by the Hi de Hi team (Tewkesbury Manor Players) for a summer holiday camp atmosphere. Queenie Jeanie (aka Jean Mansfield) popped in together with the Town Mayor, Cllr Simon Raywood, who enjoyed a round of golf on the mini golf course. Generous donations from the public and takings from the tearoom added up to £900 which has been raised for Cancer Research UK. Organisers Karen Brennan and Shelby Powell wish to thank Tewkesbury Baptist Church for the use of the hall and grounds, Kerry at M&Co for the fashion show, as well as the volunteers who baked cakes and helped to set up, plus participants and visitors who made it a memorable Platinum Jubilee for the town. It was an event fit for a Queen!

The long-awaited Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is nearly here. On the 9th and 10th of July, between the hours of 11am and 6 pm on Saturday, and 11am and 5 pm on Sunday the gates will be thrown open for this incredible medieval spectacular. Across the land, indeed as far afield as France, Belgium and the United States armour is being polished, swords burnished, and medieval finery fettled as thousands of re-enactors prepare to descend upon ‘A Bloody Meadow by Tewkesbury’ to re-enact this defining battle between the houses of York and Lancaster. For months, traders have been busy firing pottery, perfecting recipes, making clothes, weapons and jewellery, brewing meads and ales and wondering how they will get it all to market in one piece. In Tewkesbury town, excited children have spent hours preparing their costumes for the glorious procession through the streets on Sunday. This historic extravaganza, run entirely by volunteers since its inception in 1984 really does offer a full day out for all the family. Whether your interest is in how people lived their daily lives, what

they ate and drank, how things were made, how they amused themselves, worshipped, made music, danced, or shopped, it’s all here! Come and experience fighting, jesters, giants, tumblers, dancers, fools, parades, processions, market stalls, food-and-drink and so much more, all culminating in the re-creation of the battle each day, narrated by Professor Ronald Hutton and a local re-enactor. The festival is, as ever, free to enter. Parking only costs £10 per car, or £5 for blue badge holders. Please bring some change to throw into the famous Rattly Buckets of Doom, to keep this great event running, and make it bigger and better than ever. Paddle Power is an annual Charity fundraising event organised by Tewkesbury School Business Studies students. Our charities: The Samaritans Charity have provided emotional support for anyone in distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide since 1953. One of our class members shared an emotional and moving story about one of his relatives that suffered and sadly took his own life. We chose this charity as we are keen to help others that need support and to spread awareness about their story. Get active for a good cause. Paddle Power will be held at Croft Farm, Tewkesbury on July 15th 2022 from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. Teams of 4-6 will be required to enter, at £30 per team. Spectator tickets are £2 per

SEVERN UNIT MARITIME VOLUNTEER SERVICE ON DUTY AT TBW Severn Unit MVS members were kept busy throughout the weekend of the TBW as many people thronged the Riverside. The Unit primarily had responsibility for safety on the river and was called into action 5 times to give assistance to boats. Severn Unit also had to rescue a crew of five from a sinking Katakanu which started to take on water as it passed the finishing line having come first in the racing! All crew members were safely taken off the craft into our Rigiflex safety boat which was on hand and then it towed the stricken boat to the quay. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Everyone played their part to the full, from manning the Comms, the First Aid Post, maintaining Safety Patrols, leading the procession of boats, running our recruitment stand and the Duck Race, in fact far too many roles to mention. It was all carried out with the professionalism that we train regularly to

achieve. I consider this to be Severn Unit’s most successful de-

ployment to date and thank all who took part.”

G.W.R Honeybourne Line Men Who Perished During World War One Members of the Restoration & Archiving Trust at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR), Toddington, have created a memorial display to honour the memory of the former employees of the Great Western Railway (G.W.R) who worked on the Honeybourne line, and sadly perished during WW1 (19141918).

Three CWGC Open Days this Summer at Tewkesbury’s Cemetery Since 1919 the CWGC has looked after graves of British and Empire War dead, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Many of them are abroad near foreign battlefields. However, some lost their lives in the UK and in many cases, their bodies were returned to their home burial grounds. At Tewkesbury it cares for ten graves from WWI and fifteen from WWII; there are also five who died after WWII. GSGC will offer three more monthly Open Days with John Dixon as guide. The dates are Saturdays meeting at 10.45 at the Swimming Pool Car Park and then 11.00 at the Cholera Memorial. The tour lasts about 90 minutes. The dates are: Saturday 13th August, Saturday 10th September and Saturday 8th October. We shall also discuss the two Cholera Outbreaks, why there are two Chapels and “paupers’ graves”. TOUR OF BRITAIN RETURNS Tewkesbury will again host a stage in a prestigious cycling event this September. Following the success of the women’s event last month, top riders return for the men’s Tour of Britain on Friday 9th September. THEN AND NOW: STATION LANE I know the location which is the junction of Station Lane/Cotteswold Road, but can readers help me identify the ancient rural building, which has now been replaced by modern houses, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. It is difficult to locate historically, as Cotteswold Road was a new development from c 1900 on ex-railway land at a time when house numbering was unreliable, and its name was unknown. It was all owned by builder F W Godfrey, in 1914 Tewkesburyís richest man. Did a member of the Stiff family live there in the 1930s? For those of you who haven’t heard about Stitchstory yet – where have you been! This project is all about the fantastic local history Tewkesbury has to offer, writes Megan Dunford. From December 2021 - May 2022 over 8000 residents across the borough added their stitches to a 6-metre-long community embroidery showcasing the history of the town. Individual panels, thread and needles were then taken to workshops, pop-up stitching and drop-in sessions. These took place in local businesses and shops, schools, community settings, scout and guide groups, independent living facilities, churches - even at the top of a Bredon hill and during park run at the vineyards! The aim, to gather as many stitchers from residents as possible and in the process share memories of the town. The finished embroidery was revealed in late May at The George Watson Memorial Hall, Tewkesbury and welcomed people to view it across the Big Weekend. Over 2100 people visited the embroidery and found their stitches, whilst recognising elements of its social history in the border and sharing their own memories. Now is your chance to show your friends and family or come along if you missed it the first-time round in the wonderful setting of Tewkesbury Abbey, from Saturday 2nd July to Tuesday 30th August. The stitching may be finished but there is now a team of three young people from the town who are at the start of the Story trail project - collecting stories from the people who make Tewkesbury such a special place to live and work and editing the audio into a QR trail that will be launched later in the year. The project is the idea of local embroiderer and community Artist Jo Teague. Supported by Sam Morris through digital updates and illustration it has been produced by Megan Dunford for Tewkesbury Culture, a network of creative and cultural organisations across Tewkesbury which is supported through Historic England’s High Street Action Zone Programme. Police and Crime Commissioner visits Probus Club Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club had an extremely interesting and informative talk by the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gloucestershire, Chris Nelson. Chris explained his role as PCC in terms of developing crime fighting strategy, working with the Chief Constable by creating and developing a plan for putting the strategy into practice and holding the Chief Constable to account in ensuring that the plan is successfully implemented. Since having been elected in 2021, Chris has implemented several initiatives including a smartphone app called Flare for women and girls who may have been in an unsafe situation or perhaps having been threatened in a public place and wish to obtain support and advice. He also told us of his plans for the next three years to meet the needs of Gloucestershire residents by strengthening

the Constabulary by expanding the force and working together with communities to make them safer, listening and empowering them to give them a voice in how they are policed. The PCC’s talk was well attended and appreciated by members who asked Chris several challenging questions! Earlier in the month, Paul Connell, an enthusiastic re-enactor came to Probus in the full uniform of a musketeer in the English Civil War complete with his non-firing matchlock musket. Paul produced a very entertaining session describing in detail how

a typical musketeer in those times would be dressed, carrying his equipment, food and of course gunpowder and ammunition. Paul also demonstrated the laborious process of filling the musket with gunpowder, ramming it into the barrel ready for the weapon to be fired. In response to many questions from Probus members, Paul also proved his detailed knowledge of the history of the Civil War and the difficult and dangerous life of the soldiers involved. We also had a very interesting historical talk by John Macartney about Viscount Nuffield, who after learning to fix bicycles as continued on P41…

Much loved village pub finds new life as a Licensed Café and Community Hub and aims to bring the heart back to the village The Swan Community Hub, Staunton, Gloucestershire, will open with a Grand Open Day on Sunday, June 26th, 2022. 10am to 4pm. There’s a new place to eat, drink and meet for the villages of Staunton & Corse, with the reopening of The Swan village pub as a fabulous, licensed café and Hub. A small group of committed volunteers, The Friends of The Swan, (FOTS) and their supporters, have worked tirelessly to re-open their much missed village pub. “It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this place” said Julie Capper, Chair of The Friends. “We have lost our village shop/ post office, butchers, garden centre/café and pub in the last few years which is why

we surveyed our local communities to find out what they really wanted in the village and were ready to support. 530 respondents told us a pub, café and shop were high on their wish list so that’s where we have focused our energies”. The FOTS are in talks to host a post office, local clubs, electoral voting, and be a centre for social prescribing support amongst other things. Located perfectly for Tewkesbury, the Swan Community Hub is set to be a place where everyone is welcome to drop in and feel at home. Following the Grand

Opening Day on 26th July, The Swan Community Hub will be running as a licensed cafe and event venue

to start with and look to open a shop and extend hours for a pub/ restaurant over time. With a grand

opening event, quiz night and wine tasting evening already

planned, the future of the Swan Community Hub is looking bright.

Bellringers celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Over the jubilee weekend bellringers from the Tewkesbury area rang the bells at around 20 towers specifically to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. There were 18 local ringers at the Abbey on Friday morning and 24 rang later the same day at Tirley and Hasfield. On the Sunday, eight members of the local band rang a quarter peal (about 45 minutes of continuous ringing)

For those looking for something stronger, a licensed bar will also be available. There will also be plenty to entertain in the arena -This year we are giving our furry friends a chance to put their best paw forward with our first ever Dog Show and of course, there can’t be a Twyning fete without the Tug of War and Egg Throwing competitions - that’s your warning to start practicing your catching! The Marquee will be displaying all our competition entries, so please don’t forget to take a moment to view the talents of Twyning. If you fancy a walk around the vil-

lage on the day, keep an eye out for some Scarecrows depicting “Events of 2022” and some decorated Wheelie Bins disguised as transportation under the theme “On the move”. For more excitement, The Twyning Motor Show will be held on Sunday 28th August and we hope to see both Classic Cars/Bikes and Electronic Cars on display. Bacon rolls, teas and coffee will be available through the day. Please do come along and join us over the weekend if you can. All events are being organised by Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex (TRAC) Committee and any money raised goes towards the village sports facilities and our popular children’s Play Area. Tewkesbury Museum in the Community Joanne Raywood, Chair of Tewkesbury Museum, is hoping to put on more exhibitions of interest to local residents: ‘Most of the people who visit us at 64 Barton Street are visitors from outside the Tewkesbury area. Which is great – they bring money into the town and spread the word back home about how much there is to do here. But we want to encourage more local residents to enjoy our collections – which, after all, represent the history of the town and surrounding area. ‘So, we’re exploring different ways of engaging more with local people. We’re focusing on two things to begin with. We’re hoping to get a grant which will enable us to expand the exhibition space in the museum, and then we can start to put on temporary displays so that there’s always something fresh that local people haven’t seen before. ‘We’re also planning to set up small displays outside the

museum building, in spaces where local people will be able to spend a few minutes seeing or hearing or reading about an object or event from the past. Shops, pubs, cafes, council offices – anywhere that members of the public are allowed to go, with a corner or wall or other space where we could install a cabinet or a few posters. ‘If you have a space that you think might be suitable, I’d really like to hear from you!

Britain’s biggest free Blues festival returns to Upton-upon-Severn this month. After an absence of two years, the event is back in the riverside town for what will be its twentieth anniversary. Winner of the British Blues Awards Festival of the Year in both 2015 and 2016, it will be held from 13th - 18th July this year. Main stage gigs will take place on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th, but there are two other stages too - and every gig is free! International and British bands will be there, with a lively atmosphere in over ten pubs and bars as the music rings through the town. Performers on the big top, acoustic and riverside stages in 2022 include The Folly Brothers, Kara Grainger, Mumbo Jumbo, Greg Coulson, Dusk Brothers, Catfish, Laurence Jones, Kat Pearson and the Keith Thompson Band. All funds raised from the event will go to the Upton Blues Charity, helping to secure the future of the festival. Camping tickets are now on sale.
