Work begins on developments at Tewkesbury RFC Tewkesbury Rugby Club has started to see changes happen at The Moats as the club's old changing rooms are demolished. They will be replaced by new facilities that will cost in the region of £380,000.

Out with the old: demolition at Tewkesbury RFC The club has been working hard to improve the facilities it has, and increase youth and adult participation. This is the next piece of the development needed to do that. By building new changing rooms at the club house, it will lift them out of the flood plain and provide flexibility for the club to extend its activities and the use of the club facilities across the range of sports and ages it has already at the club. This development will allow a more flexible use of the changing rooms . Each room may be used separately as they are self contained with showers and toilets. It will enable the rugby playing side of the club to develop and do more, as well as offering the opportunity for the other teams using the

club and for new sports to develop. The club is hoping this part of the development will offer real opportunity for players to start the sport, reengage with the sport, or to continue with it. In working to get the right facilities its hopes to build on its successful teams already based at the town club. The club starts it training for its senior men's teams on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings in July, with the senior girls and Ladies on Wednesday; Juniors' start the last Sunday in August with registration the first Sunday in September. Tewkesbury RFC would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people and organisation for helping us and future players of the club in moving forward.

Mop Fair Dates Set Dates have been fixed for this year’s Tewkesbury Mop. The fair will be held from 6pm on Friday 9th and from 11am on Saturday 10th October.

Many hands make light work and there are a number of duties which need to be carried out including removing weeds, sweeping pavements and dead-heading the floral display to make sure they are looking at their best. A twin line dosette system with space for a morning dose and evening dose of medication is very slim, easy to store and to take on holiday. We also offer a standard size dosette, which has five separate compartments for each day -

so the medication is set out for the patient, covering all dosage times. In addition we offer a larger size dosette tray that will carry about fourteen different tablets/capsules per dosage times! Finally in conjunction with Gloucestershire County Council, we can offer an Orbital dispenser. This is a special device that plays a tune, flashes a light and vibrates when a dose is ready to be taken. All of these systems use a non-heat seal adhesive, so the medication is not subjected to any excessive heat. ARMED FORCES DAY COMMEMORATED Tewkesbury Borough Council and partners at its Public Services Centre commemorated Armed Forces Day on Monday 22nd June with a special flag raising ceremony. It was led by the Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough Cllr Ron Allen, who was joined by armed forces personnel and veterans, as well as Public Services Centre staff and Tewkesbury Borough councillors. The mayor's chaplain Rev. Wendy Ruffle read a prayer in honour of the Armed Forces, and the mayor then raised the flag, which remained flying until after Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June.

The photograph of the fire (left) at the Gupshill Manor was a mystery, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. It was easy to establish the date – but far more difficult to establish the location “NOW!” The fire took place in 1925 when the former farmhouse was being converted into residential accommodation. However, before the new tenant arrived, the rooms needed to be heated with fires. A beam caught fire and started this disastrous fire. So was the damaged building demolished to make way for the modern car park – that was the obvious solution. However, comparing that photograph with a recent one posed a problem - since the two aspects do not fit. However, in the restaurant, there is another older photograph that resembles the 1925 photograph. The surviving beams are revealed but it is clear that the 1925 photograph was taken at the modern rear of the pub. The damaged wing was demolished - to make way for the pub garden (photo below). This confirms our knowledge that the front of the pub was once the back. In Medieval times there was no A38 – that was not built until after 1800. It was a later owner, Mrs. Gaze, who realised the potential of selling teas and cakes to frustrated motorists in twentieth century, pre-motorway, traffic jams. The concept of the modern eating-house was born - but now we must enter via the Medieval back door! John Dixon

VILLAGE PREPARES FOR POPULAR STREET MARKET July has come around again and the people of Overbury, situated just north east of Tewkesbury, are busy preparing for the major event of their Summer calendar. The 37th annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 11th July. The market takes place between 10am and 12noon against a picturesque backdrop of stone cottages, St Faith’s Church (dating back to Norman times) and the 18th century Overbury Court. During a hectic two hours, there are lots of opportunities to pick up unusually high quality bargains. On the food front there are home produced cakes and goodies from Anne's

Pantry, and Overbury Farms Lamb. Get there early to buy the best lemon drizzle cake or marmalade!

Stalls include the ever popular ‘Going for a Song’ - overflowing with paraphernalia of all descriptions.

The book stall always has a fresh supply of secondhand books. Other stalls have a huge range of things including gifts, cards, handmade jewellery, plants, accessories, bags, toys and games; the list goes on and on. Talented local artists display their work, and Conderton potter, Toff Milway, encourages all to ‘throw a wobbly’ (pot) on his wheel. Whitcombe Garden (a member of the National Gardens Scheme) opens and Overbury village First School and Grasshoppers day nursery provide lots of opportunities for fun

games for children. The raffle has magnificent (and often very local) prizes to be won. There is a good bottle stall and a range of refreshments on sale in another beautiful village garden. Mouth-watering bacon butties can be enjoyed and are ready prior to market opening. Car parking and entry are both free. If very wet, the market will take place in the Village Hall. POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater In all the years that I have been a counsellor it has never failed to amaze me how many people seemed to be engaged almost perpetually in what I can best describe as unnecessary power struggles, writes David Slater. They were getting nowhere but still continued their wasteful behaviour patterns. They still needed to prove to themselves that they were the best, the biggest, the cleverest, the funniest or whatever. They felt the need to support their own ego. What a waste of time and energy.Do you waste energy in this respect? Just take a look at the following story and then give your answer ! There were two cats walking on a narrow path at the back of the Abbey. They were not together. They were walking towards each other. When they got close to each other neither one was prepared to stand aside to let the other one pass unhindered. they stood there staring and growling at each other. "Let me pass!" said one cat. "No way," said the other. "I was here first." "Rubbish!" snarled the first. " I was here first and anyway I am the biggest." "So what ?" said the other." I am by far the better looking." "Looks aren't important," said the first. "I am wise so you should respect me !"

With that the conversation broke down and became an argument and the argument turned into a fight. It was a noisy fight too as those who have seen cats fighting will know only too well. A little while later an older and wiser cat turned up on the scene having been drawn there by curiosity to see what all the fuss was about. He just stood there in the centre of the path and laughed. The two cats stopped fighting and asked the newcomer what he thought he was laughing at. "You two idiots," replied the newcomer. " I am just laughing at your stupid behaviour. â€œYouâ€™re wasting time an d life being rude or hurting each other just because you wont let the other one pass. The path is plenty wide enough for you to pass by without any trouble." With that he strode past the two cats and there was, as he had said, plenty of room. "Why are you fighting ?" he asked. "It's a matter of honour and power and sticking up for myself," said one of the two cats. "That is just too pathetic for words," said the wiser cat. " Someone who is really strong and self confident, clever or good looking doesnt feel the need to have to show this to others. He feels good about himself, Yes BUT he doesnt try to make out he is superior. He just feels good

about and within himself. Others can feel that, you know, and they respect him for it. Just examine your life and see what wonderful things you have to be thankful for and look at how you are behaving right now ! For goodness sake Grow Up ! Is this the way to get through life ? "Is it really worthwhile arguing and scrapping as you are over something which has no importance anyway. You ought to take a step back and be where I am and just look at yourselves and your behaviour." The two cats just didnt know what to say. The words of the wise cat certainly made sense they thought as he turned and walked back the way he had come. The two cats had been almost brought up too be the way they were. Their habits were strong and were not easy to resist. Did the two cats stop fighting and peacefully continue on their way? Did they change the way they behaved and become more reasonable in the way the wise cat had described? Put yourself in their position. What would you do now? Think of all the times you have been in a similar position in your life where you were stubborn, not prepared to stand aside, showed your arrogant side. Then remember, just like the cats, YOU have the choice. Think about it! David Slater

This year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the town - takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July, on part of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury’s site. As well as huge recreation of the Battle featuring around 2000 knights, archers, spearman, gunners and other characters, there are living history villages. There, families, including their children, live as 15th century armies on the march. You can also visit the sumptuous royal encampments of King Edward IV and Queen Margaret of Anjou. range of real ales and that medieval favourite, mead. When the festival closes on Saturday you can make your way to Tewkesbury's famous Abbey, for a re-creation of the storming of the Abbey, which followed the original battle, and very tongue in cheek trials and executions of the captured Lancastrians.

To restore a gentle calm this is followed by Complin – the last service of the Monk's day. Entrance is free, with a small charge for parking. The gates open at 11.00am and close at 6.00pm on Saturday and 5.00pm on Sunday. COME JOIN THE PARADE! This year, Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is running a huge carnival/parade through the streets of Tewkesbury on the morning of Sunday 12th July. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, the largest free festival of its kind in Europe, is now in its 33rd year. The parade will start mustering at 10am in Quay Street, and on the bridge at Healing's Mill Tewkesbury ready to set off for 11am. It should reach the festival site approximately 45 minutes later. Around 500 people, made up of 21 community groups, will be joining the parade. These include Tewkesbury schools, three bands, re-enactors from the festival battle, entertainers, a large dragon and plague doctor - and many more with a medieval theme. The schools involved have been working on medieval-themed costumes and props, with workshops at the John Moore School and the Watson Hall. Materials for the workshops have been provided by members of the Medieval Festival and Battlefield societies, who have also supervised and arranged road closures and safety procedures for the procession.

INSIDE THE SECRET GARDEN This delightful little stroll takes in one of the best kept secrets of Bredon Hill - the walled garden at Kemerton Court, writes Jack B. Walker. Open between 10am and 6pm in summer months, there is a tranquil atmosphere here where visitors may enjoy something of the feeling of a Monastery Garden.

Admission to the Walled Garden is free of charge, but donations may be made in the box just inside the church door. Park with care in Back Lane, near St Nicholas’ Parish Church. The entrance to the Walled Garden is opposite the gate to the churchyard. For our walk, go up the lane towards the village and look for a gate into an orchard on your left, just after a house called Rye Close (1). Follow the footpath sign, diagonally across the orchard, and go through the gate at the far side. Cross over the road and go through the gate opposite, into the field (2). Follow the yellow arrow markers until you reach a row of trees; keep these to your right and walk ahead to reach a metal gate at the corner of the field (3). Go through the gate (or alternatively use the stile a little to the left), and bear left along the

track. At the end of the field, turn left on to a byway (4) and carry on until you reach the road again. Turn right (5) and at the next junction, before the cottage, turn left into Back Lane. As this lane bears sharp left, walk straight ahead into a lane with a wooden bungalow on its corner. Look for the stile on your right (6) and cross over it, into a field. Follow the path along the edge of this field, over another stile and carry on along the same line; the path eventually descends to the left and over a wooden footbridge (7). Keep straight ahead along the boundary of the field, until you meet another path. (8). Turn left and walk along the edge of the field; the house across the field to your left is Lower Mill. When you meet the next path, turn left (9) can be muddy - and go back up the lane into the village. Turn right to return to the church.

Music in the Abbey The Birmingham Bach Choir will be giving a concert in Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 4th July (7.30pm). The choir is one of the longest established music groups in the Midlands, and its leading large chamber choir with their performances regularly earn 4 and 5-star reviews. They regularly come to Tewkesbury, with their last appearance back in April 2014. The performance will include works by three leading French composers. Published in 1947, Requiem is the greatest of French composer and organist Maurice Duruflé's few works. The choir, conducted by Paul Spicer, will be performing this along with works by along with works by Kodály, Fauré and Langlais. On Wednesday 8th July, there will be two concerts as part of Cheltenham Music Festival - at 6.30pm and 7.30pm. A varied programme features Silent Cinema and Medieval Music. Tewkesbury artist Jessica Cull-Thomas will be exhibiting some of her work at the local society’s art exhibition this month, and she currently has a piece of her work on show at the White Room Gallery in Gloucester too. But it’s not just local people her work is impressing. Last year international singing sensation Lady Gaga strutted her stuff in Jessica’s designs. “I attended three of Lady Gaga’s sold-out shows in London last year, and on two of the nights she wore t-shirts that had some of my artwork printed on them,” said Jessica. “I also saw her in Birmingham, and in the second concert there she had a tote bag that carried one of my designs.” Jessica has been drawing since she was four years old, and her parents say that she was never without a pencil and paper in her early years.

She studied art right through to A-level and has had her illustrations published in three children’s books. “I am more than happy to draw anything, Jessica added. “I have designed tattoo's before, and created a logo which is currently being used for 'Catting

MELANIE’S MAKEOVER by Emma Lawson of Ell Hair Studio This month Emma Lawson of Ell Hair Studio treats Melanie to a fabulous new look. Melanie doesn’t wear make up on a daily basis so I applied Iprime to even out the skin, then I used the Itint which is a tinted moisturiser to give the skin a nice glow, sealing it with Ifinish light. For the cheeks I used ice pop to enhance and give a natural colour. For the eyes Iline soft brown underneath the eye and Sirocco applied to lid.

The Iflutter plum mascara lifts and adds volume and for the lips I used I slick opulence. Melanie says, “Thank you Emma it was a lovely treat and I’ve had some lovely compliments from some of the mums at school. The make up feels really light and natural and I love the curls in my hair. LONDON MOONWALK At 11pm on Saturday 16th May nine ladies from Tewkesbury, dressed as mermaids, took part in the annual Moonwalk in London, to raise both awareness and money for breast cancer. Both men, as well as women, put on bras and took to the streets of London, under the light of the moon, to walk thirteen miles. The ladies of Tewkesbury were the forth group to set off and due to the thousands who take part it was a slow start. There was also a long 45 minute

wait for a toilet stop! However they finally crossed the finish line at 5.13am. Paula Gilchrist, one of the women taking part said “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family, colleagues and perfect strangers when raising money for this charity. Three different

people in the restaurant we were at, before the event, donated £50 just because they saw our tshirts and thought what we were doing was for a great cause. We would like to thank everyone who has sponsored us.” So far the total money raised is £1,500.

FUNDRAISING FOR ACORNS CHILDRENS HOSPICE by Anita Haycock Once again our knitters and stitchers have surpassed themselves by producing thousands of little woollen animals. They have been beavering away ever since Easter 2014 so that we had over two thousand animals to sell complete with Cadburys Creme Eggs! The numbers of animals produced were 528 rabbits, 313 chickens, 1,250 chickens with hats, 289 bears and 50 ducks on water, making a total of 2,430 animals. All of these were on sale at twenty outlets, several of them new outlets. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and enthusiasm of our band of knitters and stitchers. Judy Marples stitched

many animals and knitted many bears, Joan Tennant knitted chickens with hats, Helen Durbin knitted chickens and sold them for us, Janet Milton knitted chickens with hats and did much stitching, Hilda Halling knitted many rabbits. Also involved were Janet Mortimer, Vera Hesketh, Ann Spry and a kind lady from Home Abbey who knitted 125 beautiful chickens but prefers to remain anonymous. Brenda Bradbury again helped us out when stocks of animals were running low! It is pleasing to note that most of our helpers

were villagers or who had lived here in the past. Thanks go to Bill Odell who managed to get us a large quantity if creme eggs at a reasonable price. We also had substantial donations of eggs from Tewkesbury Garden Centre and from supermarkets, also donations of cash. This has also boosted our total for Acorns Hospice, Worcester to £2275.84p. This total also included the profit raised from the Webb Ivory Christmas Catalogue. We are already receiving knitted animals for next year! We need more knit-

ters and stitchers, so if you can knit and follow a simple basic pattern or you think you could stitch up, please contact us. Our next fundraiser will be the Webb Ivory Christmas Catalogue 2015. These will be available September and we hope to recruit more customers thereby raising more money for Acorns Childrens Hospice at Worcester. TEWKESBURY ART SOCIETY CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY Tewkesbury Art Society celebrated their 50th Anniversary on Thursday 4th June, with a lovely meal at the Boys Brigade Hall, Newtown. This very special event was attended by sixty members and associate members, who enjoyed a meal of cold meats and salads followed by several choices of desserts, all prepared by several TAS members.

A selection of photos taken through the fifty years were on display, which were very interesting to see. Janet Green, Vice Chair of TAS gave an interesting talk of Art in Tewkesbury from the

time of the Romans up to present day, remarking on the vast amount of beautiful paintings owned by the council, a few of which are on show at the Town Hall. Janet was after all born and bred in Tewkesbury

so she knows more than most about this amazing town. The beautiful Anniversary cake was cut by Gill Shelley. Gill was Chairman of the Art Society for almost fourteen years and TAS

longest serving chairman to date. But the day was almost spoilt with the lack of large plates in kitchen, and here I would like to thank Tracy of The Canterbury Inn, for coming to our

rescue with the loan of sixty large plates. So panic over and members went on to enjoy their special day, and look forward to the next fifty years.

About the Reserve Tewkesbury Nature Reserve has evolved to benefit wildlife and the local community by developing the green infrastructure within Tewkesbury, enhancing biodiversity and improving urban drainage. It will contribute to a network of Severn Vale green spaces, identified in the Gloucestershire Core Strategy and the Gloucestershire Infrastructure Plan. The 114 acre site is situated between Jubilee Way

and the Priors Park Estate and opposite Morrisons Supermarket. Tewkesbury Nature Reserve Ltd (TNR) a charitable company limited by guarantee was set up to manage the nature reserve. We have been working with many organisations, some have contributed funds for work to be done others have given professional guidance.

Funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund has allowed us to employ Larry on a part time basis to organise the nature reserve volunteers. He and the volunteers are doing a sterling job, the work parties have cleared parts of the site of rubbish, trimmed the trees and hedges around the perimeter as well as taking part in a number of nature surveys. Larry has now added the management of the reserve to his role.

While negotiations for the land and all the legalities were taking place progress on the reserve went very slowly. Now these are almost completed and we will shortly be granted a 30 year lease on the land. At the same time everything seems to have speeded up on the reserve. Late last year we were awarded a major funding donation of nearly ÂŁ250,000 from Gloucestershire Environment Trust and this money released a host of tasks we were able to get on with. We have certain criteria to achieve with our funding from Natural England via our Higher Level Stewardship. This included management of grassland and in some areas the best way to do this is to graze the land. Accordingly contractors have fenced off some of the SW fields to contain cattle and they will arrive in the next month or so when we have installed a water supply for them. For the past 15 years sheep have been present on the reserve and they are back on the east fields to help us. (The farmer has installed electric fencing now, so they shouldn't escape down Tewkesbury's Barton Street as they did on day one of their arrival!). There is still a lot to do and I want to say once again that the work volunteers provided during last year was invaluable. We are about to recommence further work sessions and if anyone can offer help or expertise it would be appreciated. We have light to heavy physical tasks as well as the opportunity to join in the surveys mentioned below (as 'experts' or interested spectators).

What are we doing now? If you have been on the reserve this year you will have noticed heavy machinery has been working in various parts of the site. The first hole was dug in August 2014 in the SE field and quickly filled with water - no surprise there. This is the beginning of a new reed bed. Some of the existing reeds have been transplanted into this area providing an excellent habitat to encourage water birds and other wildlife. The other works are to add meanders to the flow of the river. In several areas the river bank is being lowered to widen the flow. In the spring, when the ground is dry enough, tracked excavators and dumpers will be back to tidy up disturbed areas. We are certain that when the work has been completed and nature has done its work it will provide much more pleasant walks for Tewkesbury residents. The fencing contractors have a number of tasks. They are managing hedges in these SW fields and pollarding a number of the tall willow trees. They are also tidying up entrances by adding gates and kissing gates, the latter large enough to allow mobility scooters. Meanwhile we are applying for planning permission to add a bridge across the southern part of the river. The Gloucestershire Orchard Trust, Nature Reserve Volunteers and children and parents from four Tewkesbury Schools, most from Queen Margaret's School, planted a variety of fruit trees including apples, pear and plum. These will provide fruit for the local community as well as entice wildlife. A larger area will be prepared to extend the planting creating an orchard. These are just a few of the things going on your new Tewkesbury Nature Reserve.

Natural things: We have in previous years undertaken a number of biodiversity surveys of species present in the reserve. This was both informative as well as establishing a base point of species present at the commencement of the nature reserve. For example, nightingales were observed then, causing a lot of excitement within Natural England and ourselves. Events were also held including a river walk led by and involving a number of experts in their various environment fields. Regular surveys and events take place and last year we held a bat night open to all in Tewkesbury and very well attended (see below). We also held a second moth evening where 13 different species kindly turned up. These events will be repeated this year. Eventually we intend to have manuals of all the species we find on the reserve so that we have base point records. We can then monitor whether the work we are doing encourages an increase of species in the future. TNR have already put together a moth survey manual and eventually this information will be available on a website. 44 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

TNR Big Butterfly Count 2014: Our very own TNR butterfly count for 2014 which took place in July and August resulted in some 108 butterfly sightings from 6 individual counts. The interesting fact about our sightings is that they match the top 10 species observed in England in the same period, though in slightly different ranking.

Our Moth surveys: About 2500 species of moth have been recorded in Britain. Such a rich diversity means that species can be found in a very wide range of habitats. Moth records can therefore provide a useful indication of the biological health of a site as the number and type of species found reflects the opportunities for breeding

for both common, widespread and more restricted and localised moths. We used a moth light trap over a period of time and recorded a list of 83 species which is a respectable total and hints at the rich diversity of insects to be found on the Tewkesbury Nature Reserve site.

Forest School The Forest School approach encourages children to get outdoors, experiencing nature and the natural world first-hand. This idea was brought over from Scandinavia in the early 1990s and Mark Stead has been running The Muddy Face Forest School throughout the summer. Over six weeks children have taken part in a range of activities. Mark says: ‘It is really important that children are provided with opportunities to experience nature at first hand. A disorder known as Nature Deficit Disorder has been identified where children are not given these experiences. With our current health and safety culture and parents worrying about the safety of their children, there are limited opportunities for children to get out and climb trees, build dens and learn about their environment in the same way we did when we were children. These sessions provide an opportunity for children to do these things in a safe and secure environment.’ Mark is hoping to hold further sessions.

VTP OPENS NEW PLANT TRAINING CENTRE Local man Steve Valentine has opened a new training centre at Newton Farm in Tewkesbury, to train and test operators to handle construction equipment. Steves company Vally Plant Training was started in 2012 and he offers a large range of training, with the most popular being 360 degree excavators, forward tipping dumpers, telescopic forklifts and road rollers. All training and testing is carried out in a specially created site for digging, and there is a specially constructed tower for forklift work. MEET THE NEW LOCK KEEPER As many people know the River Avon was a privately owned waterway, developed by it’s owner, William Sandys, in the 1600’s to become a commercial enterprise. Installing the locks, wiers, sluices and channels transformed the River Avon from a muddy ditch into a useable navigation for lease to canalboat companies. Usage of the river now is mainly for pleasure and it ceased making a profit some 300 years ago. It is maintained and improved by the Avon Navigation Trust, a charity supported by revenue from boat licenses. Works are carried out by a small staff and a team of volunteers and there’s some new faces on that team. New lock keeper Mrs Nicola Lancaster BScHons has recruited friends and family to the cause and is working hard to keep our Avon Lock accessible and safe for river users, tourists and locals. Niciola said, “We had a BBQ for our regular boaters and friends and hope to make Avon Lock a friendly place for everyone to enjoy. It’s a responsible job though, heavy, operating hydraulic machinery on a public Right of Way. Safety of the boaters and the public is top of the agenda but I also want

to make the lock a beautiful place by improving the natural biodiversity of the riverside environment. Unfortunately we have seen a rise in offences where members of the public have had their pockets picked or had items stolen from handbags or shopping bags. There’s a variety of different ways that the thieves operate; sometimes they are alone but more commonly they are part of a team. They can use one of a number of distraction techniques such as bumping into you, spilling a drink onto your clothing or asking you for directions. While distracted a second member of the team can take your wallet from a pocket or purse from the top of your bag. Here are a few tips to help you: • Never carry your wallet in a back pocket. • Make a copy of your passport in case it gets lost or stolen. • Be extra vigilant in crowded areas such as tourist attractions or shopping arcades. • On busy transport systems be extra careful with your bags and be wary of people offering help at ticket machines they may be trying to

dupe you into handing over cash. • If you stop at a bar or café for a drink or meal don’t drop your guard keep your handbag, rucksack and camera in your view at all times. • Split your money up into several pockets or compartments of your bag, consider using a money belt. • If your accommodation has a safety deposit box use it and only carry enough cash for each day’s activities. • If food shopping never leave your trolley unattended or with a purse or wallet visible in a handbag. My holiday checklist before you leave home: 1.Lock up – lock all windows and doors, not forgetting any garages, shed or other outbuildings. 2. Set the security alarm if you have one - if it's a monitored alarm don't forget to give your monitoring station the details of the key holder. 3.Cancel deliveries of milk and newspapers. 4.Put valuables out of sight – make sure you move your laptop, car keys etc out of the way of prying eyes. 5.Make your home look occupied – if you can, get a neighbour to come in and pull the curtains. Invest in some timer switches to turn lights and a radio on and off. 6.Avoid a tell-tale buildup of post inside your front door by getting a neighbour to move it from the doormat. 7.If you have a drive, ask a neighbour to park their car there occasionally - it will make it look as though people are coming and going.

8.Enlist the help of neighbourhood watch – ask members to keep an eye on your property. 9.Mow your lawn before you go – make sure it doesn't look overgrown. 10. Put away tools or ladders – they could be used to force entry to your home.

11.Use a home safe for important personal documents and your most valuable items such as jewellery. 12. Security mark your property so if it is taken it can be identified. Above all make sure you have a great time and enjoy yourself.

THE TRIP OF HIS LITTLE LIFE This year we have taken in quite a high number of fox cubs, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue at Beckford. We have 29 in our care at the moment, which have come in for various reasons such as being hit by a car, being orphaned when the vixen has disappeared, or being found injured or alone for unknown reasons. We have also taken several in from other centres that don’t have the facilities or experience to rear fox cubs in such a way that imprinting is avoided. Imprinting an animal means that it becomes dependent on humans, lacks the natural fear of humans that is vital for a wild animal’s survival and is therefore never going to be releasable. All our cubs are now on their final stage of rehabilitation before they are released back into the wild in the late summer/early autumn. One of them came to us from an animal sanctuary in south Wales, but he started life in Derbyshire so is a very well-travelled cub. He had been born in a hay barn and some of the hay was loaded onto a lorry and was transported to Wales where he was discovered when the lorry was unloaded. One very lucky cub but sadly, we don’t know whether he was alone or if his siblings had also been put on the lorry and had fallen off during the journey. He has now joined the others at Vale, preparing for release in a few weeks’ time. We are now in the middle of our busiest

time of year with 20-30 casualties being brought in to the hospital every day. Most of our 4 – 4,500 total annual intake comes in to us between the beginning of May and the end of July, coinciding with the breeding season for the majority of wildlife. As well as large numbers coming in every day, we are also releasing mammals and birds that have been reared or rehabilitated on an almost daily basis. Recently we have released sixteen ducklings in one go, all of which came in as dayold balls of fluff but just a few weeks later they are fully feathered and ready to go. We have also been releasing young blackbirds, thrushes, starlings, blue tits, robins, sparrows, great tits, dunnocks and various finches, all reared from featherless nestlings at Vale – this really is the best and most satisfying part of our work. As usual at this time of year, our costs increase massively and funds are desperately needed to enable us to continue our work. It costs over £25,000 per month to run the hospital and we rely on donations to help us to keep going. Cat of the Month Ronnie is 9 years old and is microchipped and neutered. Ronnie came to us as a found cat and when we traced his previous owner they could no longer take him back. He is an incredibly handsome lad and very gentle, we feel he could live with a mature family. He will want to spend time outdoors, but must have a suitable length of time getting to know his new owners before he can be let out to ensure he does not get lost!
