TEWKESBURY’S JUNIOR CRIME CRUSHERS ARE REWARDED
TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL
Pupils from Queen Margaret School in Tewkesbury have been rewarded for looking after their local community. The ten pupils, who have named themselves Crime Crushers, are taking part in a Junior Warden scheme, which involves them being mini Bobbies on the beat for their local area. To reward them for their work, the Crime Crushers joined the Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough, Cllr Claire Wright, for afternoon tea last month. As part of the afternoon the pupils, who are aged between 10 and 11, had the opportunity to try on the mayor’s regalia, visit the Council Chamber to see where local decisions are made, and learn all about civic duties. launched in June, the Crime Crushers team has reported issues such as broken fences, graffiti, smashed glass and litter. As well as being fully supervised by an adult, the wardens are armed with an equipment pack, including a torch, clip-
board, notebook, kit bag, gloves and high visibility jacket. The scheme will run until the end of term and will also involve a session out on the road with a police camera and a visit to Wingmoor Farm Recycling Centre.

Mike atop the tower
HEAR YE, YOUR MAJESTY! Tewkesbury’s own Town Crier, Mike Kean-Price, made it right to the top last month - and it was all in the line of duty. To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Queen, Mike climbed right to the top of Tewkesbury’s abbey tower, and photographer Jack Boskett was up there with him to record the moment. The Town Crier’s mission was to make a Royal Proclamation on behalf of the residents of Tewkesbury. Mike Kean-Price believes the tradition of hailing from on high is unique to Tewkesbury. The town may be the only one in the country to mark important royal
events in this way. Mike showed his true colours for the occasion - dying his beard in patriotic red, white and blue colours. Local people sponsored the fashion statement to raise money for the restoration of the war memorial at the cross. Mike’s beard was shaved off at the end of last June by popular local barber Alan Cresswell.

Their remit is to fundraise for a range of exciting new community arts to enhance and invigorate the hospital environment for patients – to distract and interest them as they wait for appointments for example. Their theme is Tewkesbury local history and the art programme is called “Tewkesbury Tales”. The first and biggest artwork has been awarded to a wonderful young glass artist called Phaedra Politis from in Somerset Frome through a limited competition. She is doing a large colourful decorative glass wall work for the Main Waiting area and for the main courtyard. The Main Waiting Area commission shows a series of “bubbles” in which are images of Tewkesbury’s history connected by the rambling Roses from the Wars of the Roses; the courtyard commission depicts the two rivers
and the landscape and includes the work of young people. Phaedra ran workshops for thirty local Queen Margaret’s school children, the ArtLift Group, and members of Clare Home Residential Unit to work on the project adding their drawings, stories and memories of Tewkesbury. Phaedra also spent time researching in Tewkesbury Museum. This amazing artwork is now due to be installed in the new community hospital. At the same time artwork from the old hospital will be moved, cleaned and rehung in the new hospital. Smaller historical documents, historic photographs, old paintings and the like will be the subject of another community project led by the art group “Stand and Stare” who will represent these digitally in a “juke Box” a way of making them easily accessible by the public. The “Take Part” programme of Roses Theatre will manage this project. Local children will select and be involved in a smaller commission specially designed for the Children’s Waiting Area.
CAMERATA TO STAGE CHARITY CONCERT FOR ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY Tewkesbury Camerata will be giving a concert in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society this month. Tewkesbury Camerata is made up of local professional and s e m i - p r o fe s s i o n a l musicians who give of their time for free to stage three concerts a year in aid of charity. This concerts programme includes a cello solo by Alison Gillies, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Also pieces by Mendelssohn and Mozart. Let there be light! The first phase of a new lighting system in the twelfth century nave of Tewkesbury Abbey has been installed. Thanks to a substantial grant from the Friends of the Abbey, the energy efficient lighting was
switched on at the end of May. The new LED system is likely to reduce running costs too.
Fundraising is now ongoing to install similar lighting in the remainder of the abbey.

Musica Deo Sacra is a week long music festival, now in its 44th year, which takes place in Tewkesbury Abbey. This year it runs from Monday 29th July to Sunday 4th August. Most events take place within the abbey, and are free of charge. Each year a group of twenty two semi-professional and professional singers meets from all parts of the country to sing this special week of services in the Abbey. The 'audience' comes from all over the world to be in the wonderful building hearing music of the highest standard. CONCERT AIDS FOODBANK A wonderfully entertaining evening of music by The Heart & Soul Community Choir was a fitting way to repay an audience that contributed so greatly towards the Tewkesbury Food Bank. A leading member of the food bank working party Gordon Sandford expressed his delight when addressing the audience at the end of the concert.
The concert organiser, Dave Lynham, confirmed that total takings for the night exceeded £1,100. Entitled "Ticket &Tin" the audience were asked to bring a tin with them; 200kgs was achieved. During the evening the many companies and businesses that had contributed towards the raffle prizes were mentioned and thanked.

Scallywags runs on the first Thursday of each month at the Olde Black Bear in Tewkesbury. Special guests and members of the public were given the opportunity to view the facilities and specialist equipment on offer, watch demonstrations and chat to gym owner, Mark Woodard. The gym opened its doors in April, and has already proved to be a great hit with local residents who can access a full timetable of classes as well as receive one to one personal instruction and coaching from Mark tailored to individual needs. Mark brings with him over forty years of experience in the mixed martial arts field with a solid background in kickboxing, Muay Thai, Ju-jitsu, Karate and Judo as well as boxing and catch wrestling. Added to his impressive mixed martial arts CV, Mark is also an experienced coach and a world renowned referee in contact sports. Mark’s aim is to share his experience and knowledge so anyone can benefit from martial arts whatever their fit-

PUB REGULARS JUMP FOR CHARITY JOY Tipplers from Tewkesbury’s Royal Hop Pole Hotel took a dive last month and raised over £1200 for the charity CLIC sargent in the process. A 43 metre crane rolled into the Church Street hotel’s car park - and 41 jumpers lined up to take part in a sponsored jump. The youngest entrants were two fourteen year olds. Organiser and pub shift manager Georgie Butler said the event proved to be a great success, held in glorious weather. £1212 was raised for CLIC sargent - a charity which provides support and information for children and young people with cancer and their families.

Bus to give local groups access to sport over summer A popular mini bus service is back on the road again in time to help community groups and organisations access sport and activity over the summer. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s mini bus service was originally launched in 2012 but has been off the road since March this year due to a lack of funding. Thanks to just over £2000 of funding from the Tewkesbury Borough Community Safety Partnership, the bus - which is run by Tewkesbury Borough Council - is able to provide a transport service for local groups until 19th July. Tewkesbury School, a Walking Group, Twyning Scouts and Gretton Primary School are just a few of the organisations that have already signed up to use the service over the summer.

TREASURE HUNTING A lot of interest has been shown in the article we ran last month on Stuart Borley and the finds he had made as a salvage diver and latterly with his metal detector. Perhaps there is a little bit of a treasure hunter in all of us. This photograph shows the results of a dig and as you can see in this case bottles and ceramics where dug up as they were in the same vicinity and can add some historical value as a time line to the location. We are still appealing to any landowners who would allow a search with a view to building a history of their land. BEES AND ANTS We all know that bees are under threat, and that the problem has been puzzling the best scientists in the land, writes Steve Goodchild. Bees come in huge varieties, and all have a vital part to play in pollinating. We’re familiar with honey bees, which live in large colonies and are kept for their honey. There are also solitary bees, which tend to burrow, into masonry or the ground, to make their nests. Many of these do not even sting. It’s very popular to shake powder around ants nests to kill them. The poison in the powder can also affect bees, and the bees which burrow into the lawn are particularly susceptible. Ants in the garden cause no harm, so unless they’re threatening the kitchen there’s no need to harm them; if ants get into the house they mark a path to the site of their discovery and arrive by the hundred to take away the food they’ve found. This might be a nuisance. If they MUST be poisoned indoors is a much better place to do it. Bees can’t get to the bait, and are therefore much safer.

MARITIME VOLUNTEER SERVICE WELCOMES TWO NEW MEMBERS Tewkesbury based Severn Unit MVS members went up in four boats to the Flybridge at Defford for a Midsummer fish and chips supper evening last month. Head of Unit Nic Price said “This was a very successful and enjoyable evening and gave members valuable training in boat handling and negotiating the river in the dark. “We are very pleased to welcome two new members who joined us recently, John Leigh of Mitton and Russ Davidson of Worcester The latter is pictured receiving his epaulettes.” The unit has had a busy time over the last few weeks with members just returning from their annual training trip in the Bristol Channel, when they went to Watchet and Cardiff.
The Italian Job: the four Tewkesbury cyclists who are heading for Rome to raise money for charity
TRIP IS WHEELY WORTH IT Four Tewkesbury cyclists will be setting off for Italy at the end of this month, in an attempt to raise money for charity. William Devine, Dan Boulton, Jack Slatter and Antanas Brazdys will be embarking on a selffunded 1,500 mile trip from Tewkesbury to Rome on Saturday 27th July. The route will take them from Portsmouth to Paris, across France into Switzerland, over the Alps and down through Italy to Rome. The quartet aim to complete the mission in three and a half weeks. Building up to the journey the cyclists have been riding around 200 miles each while training. This is their first ever

Completion of new hospital in sight The completion of Tewkesbury Community Hospital is in sight with contractors Seddon working to finish the new 20-bed facility, which is expected to be up and running by the end of the summer. Matron Julie Ellery, of Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust, said: “It’s exciting to be nearing the final stage of the build, and our staff are busy behind the scenes making final preparations for the move across from our present site. “We’re planning to throw the doors open for a community open day beforehand, so that everyone can come and take a tour, admire our wonderful new pieces of artwork and see what a fantastic community facility Tewkesbury is going to have.” The new hospital facilities will include 20 beds, a minor injuries unit, facilities for outpatients clinic as now, theatre with recovery suite for day case and minor surgical procedures, and an assessment and rehabilitation unit. Theatre manager Lisa Ryland added: “My grandmother was a cook at our present hospital, which I remember visiting as a child, so I do have fond memories of the building. But when I looked round the new hospital this week, I was overwhelmed by how lucky we are in Tewkesbury” Volunteer and former nurse Jane Crowther added: “The hospital has long been at the heart of Tewkesbury, and we have a great team of volunteers who help support its work in a variety of ways. We’re looking forward to moving to the new site, and to showing people round the new hospital facilities at our open day later this summer.” The old hospital building will be demolished once the new site is operational, making way for development which is expected to be a new primary healthcare facility. 24 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

Tewkesbury Foodbank’s shelves have now been re-stocked with food donations from the local business community, and a financial donation has been presented to the charity’s treasurer, Peter Dickinson, who was invited to the meeting by organisers to explain the reasons behind the Foodbank being set up. The foodbank which officially opened its doors in April of this year provides emergency food and short term support to local people in crisis. It is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers from local churches and members of the community. The food collection centre which is based at Holy Trinity Church Hall in Oldbury Road is open on Tuesday and Friday mornings supplying individuals and families with a three day stock of emergency food using a voucher system. Spokesperson for the networking club which meets at Sherdons Golf Centre, Richard Chatham, commented “We are very grateful to Peter for coming along to tell us about the invalu-

Village gears up for 35th annual street market July has come around again and the people of Overbury, situated just north east of Tewkesbury, are busy preparing for the major event of their Summer calendar. The 35th annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 13th July. The market takes place between 10am and 12 noon against a picturesque backdrop of stone cottages, St Faith’s Church (dating back to Norman times) and the 18th century Overbury Court. During a hectic two hours, there will be opportunities to pick up bargains as well as a range of Overbury Farm Lamb and home produced cakes and goodies from Anne's Pantry. Stalls this year feature gifts, jewellery, hand made soap, CDs, computer games, DVDs, cards and – plus books, toys and ‘Going for a Song’ paraphernalia. Making ‘most wanted’ become a reality Health and Happiness are two things which most of us would put at the top of our “Most Wanted” list, writes local therapist David Slater. Life, though, sometimes seems to stand in the way of this and we can let our reactions to situations affect how we move forward. We need to be aware of this so I am giving a breakdown this month of things to think about that can help that want-
ed list become your personal reality. • Be optimistic – look for the positive even in a negative situation. If a job has been taken from you then tell yourself that there may well be something better just around the corner. Don’t shut your eyes or mind to such a possibility. Do that and you prevent such a happening anyway. • Be Kind – this can make you feel really good. It’s great for self-
esteem and helps make someone else’s day a special one too. But, don’t let yourself be put upon or taken for granted. • Set goals – people who have goals have a focus. They have a commitment to life. Age is no barrier to this. All are capable of new ambitions and new skills and experiences. • Live now! – It is only too easy to live in the past, remembering good or bad times or living in
the future, imagining how it may be. Really there is NO past and NO future. What there is IS the NOW. Look for the positives you have in your life at the moment – a roof over your head, food and drink, family, friends, a peaceful environment, food in the cupboard, a pet, and the sometimes even, the weather. Appreciate what you have RIGHT NOW. That is one of the greatest of the secret ingredients of happi-
ness. • Go with the Flow – opportunity only knocks once at your door, be sure you are at home when it knocks. Listen to your gut feelings – your body doesn’t lie! • Take care – look after yourself. • Count your Blessings - whether it is seeing a rainbow, sharing a smile, being pain free or whatever. • Forgive – to forgive is to enhance the healing process.
• Language – think about what you say and how you say it. Words have nuclear explosive power! They deserve respect and you need to be very aware and careful of how you use them. Maintain positive speaking and thinking if at all possible. • Laugh – it really is a terrific and powerful medicine which you can so easily share with those around you. Let it work for YOU! GLOBE PLAYERS HEAD FOR TEWKESBURY Shakespeare’s Globe will be touring the three Henry VI plays under their original titles – Harry the Sixth, The Houses of York & Lancaster and The True Tragedy of the Duke of York – around the country this summer. Four all-day performances of the three plays will also be staged in the open air at Wars of the Roses battlefields. This will be an unprecedented theatrical event, exploring the links between English history, English literature and English landscape. Each of the four battlefields – Towton, Tewkesbury, Barnet and St Albans – saw some of the bloodiest battles in the country’s history. It is thought that the Battle of Towton alone
claimed 28,000 lives. The Tewkesbury play is due to be staged on Saturday 4th August. The Henry VI plays begin with the death of Henry V and together chart the entirety of his son’s turbulent reign. They encompass the stories of Joan of Arc, who is burnt at the stake at the end of Harry the Sixth, and Jack Cade, whose short-lived peasant rebellion is depicted in The Houses of York & Lancaster. Yet at the heart of all three plays is
the lethal struggle between York and Lancaster. The black comedy that builds with each reversal of power in The True Tragedy of the Duke of York ultimately sets the stage for the ascent of Shakespeare’s demonic Richard III. Although usually performed as a trilogy, the Henry VI plays were not intended as such and each one can be enjoyed without knowledge of the others. The Globe will present each of the three plays as stand-alone productions, emphasizing their
individual strengths and qualities, while also providing the rare opportunity to see all three staged in a single day. Battlefield performances will take place on simple booth stages, offering audiences an authentic experience of early modern theatre. The three plays will be directed by Nick Bagnall, whose previous directing credits include Betrayal (Crucible, Sheffield) and Entertaxiing Mr Sloane. Nick is joint Artistic Director of the Milton Rooms, Malton.

Don’t worry: there are no queues for the Channel Tunnel on this route! Our Paris is a quiet little spot on the lower slopes of Bredon Hill, just a short hop from Ashton-under-Hill.
Park your car in Ashton main street just beyond the First School (also accessible by 540 bus from Tewkesbury) and walk up the street. Look out for Bakers Lane, which is the first turning on the left (1). Turn into it and follow the lane as it winds up the hill. Eventually it levels out and becomes a rough track. Keep straight ahead, ignoring the various footpaths to the left and
On your left you will see the gateway to Bredon Springs. This was formerly an exotic garden open to the public - the former home of a botanist who discovered many unusual plants would grow here due to the warm fresh water springs. Walk ahead, ignoring the track to the right (2) and go down the stoney slope. At the bottom, look for a gap in the hedge and turn right (3)

and go straight ahead on the footpath. Eventually you will come into a field. Go along the edge, keeping the hedge on your right, and over a footbridge. Head towards a farm gate next to some cottages, one of which was once a temporary home to a wellknown writer of country walks! When you reach the lane (4) turn right and go up a track, which leads into an orchard (5). Go through the gate and bear right, keeping the fence to your right. Go over a stile and a stream, then up the bank and diagonally right. This path will bring you back to point (3). Bear right along the track and though a farm gate, following the way marker diagonally right to a gate (often left open), keep the perimeter on your right, with a small pond (known as the Moat) behind it. When you reach the edge of the churchyard, go through the kissing gate (6) and carry on past the lovely old church. Go through the lych gate (7) and turn left. Pass the Star Inn(!) and return to the car.

As her experiences in Paris increase so the tension builds with involvement of other agents and the ever present gestapo endangering her every step to extract Clement from Paris. one between the houses of York and Lancaster. For the first time banners made by local children at a workshop organised by the Roses Theatre will be part of the event. They will be carried by their makers as part of a dragon parade around the site, starting from the Bright Knight tent at at 2.00pm on both days. Also new for this year will be the opportunity to try your hands at Medieval skittles. The skittle alley will be found next to the beer tent with its range of mead,ciders and beers, including Tewkesbury Festivale, specially brewed for the event by the award-winning micro brewery Goffs’ of Winchcombe. Returning after a few years absence will be our falconer, and the stilt walking and juggling team, Zooted. All the usual attractions, including the battle re-enactment, living history villages, dancers, minstrels, a gruesome barber surgeon,and our lovely storytellers will be there. The Lancastrian Queen Margaret of Anjou will be setting up an elegant French Court on
the Bloody Meadow, whilst the Yorkist King Edward will hold court in great splendour on Windmill Hill. This year’s festival takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July and gates open at 11am on both days. The dramatic official opening will be performed by patron Robert Hardy CBE FSA at midday on Saturday The battle takes place
at 4pm on Saturday, with a further skirmish around the Abbey at 7.30pm Sunday’s battle is at 3pm, with the festival closing at 5pm. As always entry to the festival is free, with a charge for parking, and a bucket collection on site (please be generous - keeping the event going last year cost a great deal of money.)

Spokeswoman Peggy Clatworthy said, “We are delighted to have local children involved, and to have another link with the Roses Theatre. We would like to see much more community involvement like this." About thirty years ago, when the organisers of the festival were much younger and fitter than they are today, they formed a group to go around staging medieval tournaments and taking part in other people's battles. At a very early point in their career they were invited to take part in a re-enactment of the Battle of Bosworth. At that event was a group playing medieval music on authentic instruments - they were the York Waits, also very early in their careers. The York Waits, are now one of the best known and most admired medieval bands in the country. The Waits were the original town watchmen, and would pass the long night hours making music. They will be bringing their authentic sound of the past to the Roses Theatre on Wednesday July 10th, when they will be launching their latest release, The White Rose and the Red. There will several other groups playing at Tewkesbury, ensuring entertainment throughout the festival outside the large beer tent.

The organisers of this year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival say that local businesses are rallying around to support the event, which lost a lot of money in its determination to keep the event going in last year's dreadful conditions. They festival organisers would like to thank Andrews Lettings, who have donated £150 towards the cost of advertising boards, The Tewkesbury Beer Lovers, for £100 from their social fund, Goffs Brewery of Winchcombe for a donation of £250 and Thompson and Banks for supporting the Bright Knight children's activities tent. POLISH DELIGHTS IN BARTON STREET The Polskie Delikatesy HQ in Barton Street is one of Tewkesbury’s newest shops, so I called in and Agnieszka (pronounce it “Agnes”) showed me around, writes the Fabulous Finder. The delicious looking Polish hams and sausages, are one of the most popular items that they sell. The dairy cabinet has cheeses, milk and yoghurt as well as smoked fish, which is fresh in on Thursdays. Looking around, there is so much to tempt the customer – tinned fish, meats and pates, chocolates and other confectionery items, teas, coffee, pasta, biscuits and a good variety of delicious looking fruit juices. Fresh bread and bakery items are delivered to the shop daily – I particularly liked the look of the doughnuts! The shop also stocks a range of baby foods and Agnieszka explained that they are
able to source most foods for customers, either from their distributor in this country or direct from Poland – so just ask for your special requests! As soon as they get their licence, they will also be selling a range of alcohol to include Polish beers and Vodka. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE RIGHT OIL FOR YOUR CAR? The answer is VITALLY IMPORTANT! Want to know why? – Well I’ll tell you…
Less than a generation ago, most cars would be quite happy to run with a simple construction mineral or semi-synthetic 10/40 oil in the sump; before that a 20/50, both of which were relatively cheap and oil changes were every 5-10,000 miles. Now, all that has changed and if your car is less than 10 years old, its oil needs will be considerably different and much more exacting. The problem is that the current and often confusing array of modern lubricants on offer are considerably more expensive, which is why some of you out there have started wondering whether all this is necessary and have gone looking for a cheaper alternative. DON’T! there isn’t one – and to ignore this advice could cost you a lot more than the price of the oil! To begin with, if your car is less than 3 years old, or on an extended manufacturer’s warranty, (this applies to BMW, Mercedes, Audi/VW, Ford and just about everyone else) and you use the wrong

oil during a service, you will instantly invalidate your warranty – and if anything happens to your engine, you’re on your own! We have seen quite a few examples of late manufactured cars, where severe engine damage has occurred, because cheap oils have been used by less than scrupulous second hand car dealers. The reason for all this expense and confusion is down to development and technology. Engine and gearbox design has moved further in the last dozen years than in the preceding 50! Fuel is expensive and wasting it not only empties your pocket, but destroys the planet too, so development constantly strives to improve engine efficiency, which it has managed to do spectacularly well. 200 - 350 hp diesels are commonplace, as are 1 litre petrol engines churning out 100 hp; all of this a pipe dream 10 years ago, unless it was on a race track. Inevitably though, there is a cost involved – and that’s the sophisticated lubricants these
engines need to keep them happy. ‘Designer Engines’ need ‘Designer Oil’; that’s the long and the short of it. The MUCH tighter tolerances, high pressures, hotter burn rates and running temperatures demand a very superior product and any old semi synthetic or even some full synthetics from just a few years back simply can’t keep up. Now, there are many outlets offering fixed price servicing, regardless of make; well that’s all very well, but not all full synthetics are the same. Many are vastly different from others. They can vary dramatically in price from as little as £4.00 per litre, right up to £13.00!!, depending on type – and NO, you can’t mix them! So before you bung your car in for a ‘One price fits all service’, just take a look in your vehicle handbook to make sure the EXACT spec oil goes back in your engine, because if it doesn’t, you could end up with more trouble than you bargained for!

Thomas Telfords money box needs a bit of cash On the side of the road leading onto Telford’s Mythe Bridge and opposite the Toll House there is an unusual little building, a Toll Booth which acted as a shelter for a toll keeper. Probably from Telford’s studio, it is thought to have been built at the same time as the Toll House for the Tewkesbury Turnpike Trust in 1826. It is in the form of a simple booth. It is single-storey on an octagonal floor plan, having a pyramidal roof, with walls above road level in sandstone ashlar but below in coursed lias and roof in slate. It has Gothic arch headed windows with casements. There is no porch but a round arch headed doorway, and it matches the Toll House opposite. Tolls were removed in 1850 so for the last 163 years the booth has been unused and slowly decaying. In 2005
the structure was strapped together to prevent collapse. We are grateful for this history by Alan Pukiss, Chairman of Tewkesbury Civic Society. The Toll Booth is listed Grade II and is in private ownership. The current owners would like to see the building restored to it’s former self and have indicated that they would allow it to open for public enjoyment. However a budget for reconstruction is not likely to be available in the near future. Maybe local commerce could be interested in helping to finance this project along. The pair convert and build extreme off road vehicles, they design the roll cages and bodies with hazardous conditions in mind. The hobby takes them all around the country looking for terrain with “will it do it or won’t it” in mind. When asked about the worst occasion Graham has been in he says “I have been in mud and water up to the windscreen but I’ve never been on my roof yet, but there is always next weekend”. The mad lads have built five vehicles to date based on Landrovers and Suzuki Vitaras but are always looking to build the ultimate off roader. We asked Graham if he ever worries from nerves in some situations? “It isn’t worth doing if you are not scared”.

Civic Duty Tewkesbury celebrated the third year of the National Civic Days event on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd June. Prescott Hill will once again be hosting the largest annual gathering of Peugeot cars. Pugfest 2013 will take place at the historic motor hillclimb track near Gotherington on Sunday 14th July The annual Peugeot Sport Club’s convention will see cars racing against time on an up hill tarmac track, as well as some of the best concours cars in the country. Prescott is the home of the Bugatti Owners’ Club, which was established in 1929 with the express objective of promoting motor sport and the pastime of motoring; to hold and arrange races, matches, competitions and time trials. MAKE IT A SECURE SUMMER Well here goes for my first submission to Tewkesbury Direct, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. I have recently been posted to Tewkesbury after a being a custody sergeant in Cheltenham cells and it has certainly been a welcome change. My new role as one of the five response team sergeants involves the supervision of staff who attend incidents, investigate crime and patrol our local communities keeping people safe. Now that it is officially summer there is often a rise in burglaries and thefts from properties due to windows being left open for ventilation. Please ensure that when you go out you remember to close all windows and make sure your home is secure, setting the alarm if you have one. Most burglaries and thefts are carried out by opportunist thieves so by taking a few simple precautions you can prevent becoming a victim of crime. Outside your home make sure pedal cycles are not left insecure especially overnight and invest in a good quality lock if you leave your cycle unattended in public places. Any items which could assist a burglar such as ladders
should be secured to a bracket on a wall . On a similar note we are still having a spate of thefts from vehicles with loose items such as satellitenavigation systems a
particular favourite of the thief. When you leave your car please ensure that all valuables are removed
or placed out of sight in the boot or glove compartment and remember to wipe off the round suction pad mark on the windscreen left by your sat-nav. Tewkesbury Police have now been located in the Tewkesbury Council Offices off Gloucester Road for the last twelve months with a reception desk to serve the local community. The reception desk's current opening hours are Monday to Thursday 8:30am - 5:00pm, Friday 8:30am - 4:00pm and Saturday 9:00am 5:00pm. The reception desk is closed on Sundays however we can be contacted
by dialling 101 for any non emergency matters. The duck that hitched a lift At this time of year, with young animals leaving the security of their nests, dens, setts, burrows and earths, they are finding themselves coming into contact with humans for the first time and many then find themselves in difficulties, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Large numbers of youngsters are admitted to Vale during the spring and summer months: hundreds of young birds, many caught by cats or in imminent danger of being caught by them; fox or badger cubs separated from mum during foraging/hunting or orphaned because of a road traffic accident. We also deal with leverets picked up by dogs or well-meaning people assuming they are orphaned as they are on their own in the middle of a field. Hedgehogs disturbed by people doing their gardening are also brought into our Beckford Centre. One of the most common calls we get is about
mallard ducks nesting well away from any water and people quite understandably think that there must be something wrong when this happens. We also get numerous calls about ducklings in strange places, including examples such as mum

and ducklings in Cheltenham High Street, on top of a twelve foot high wall and also on the top floor of a multistorey car park. Sometimes in these situations the best advice is to leave them alone and let them make their own way to water in their own time but there are times when we need to intervene because the ducks have nested in totally unsuitable and potentially dangerous (for the ducklings) places.

We then have to attempt to capture mum and ducklings in order to relocate them on the
nearest suitable area of water. This is often not a simple as it sounds; because of course, mum can fly even though the ducklings can’t and if we don’t catch mum it means that the ducklings can’t be released straight away. But we have to rear them until they are fully feathered and able to keep themselves waterproof. All wildlife does much better when reared in the wild by their parent(s). One of the more unusual duckling incidents occurred recently. A canoeist was paddling down the River Avon when he realised he was being followed by a tiny duckling, and when the call came in to us the little fluff-ball was riding down the river on the back of his canoe! On arrival at the hospital we realised that it wasn’t the usual mallard but a shelduck chick. We don’t see these very often as they are mainly found near the coast, feeding on crustaceans and small invertebrates. The shelduck is making great progress but has had to get used to the company of some mallard ducklings as we are unlikely to get any more shelducks in.
