After misadventures in Glasgow John finds himself an idyllic hideaway on a remote island where he is taken in by a vegetarian family, consisting of brother, Cornelius, an Archaeologist and two sisters, Emily and pregnant Jane. They have a background following the beliefs of a man called Thorpe, who is ever present in their lives but never seen or met by us the reader. John is trying to recover from his experiences in Iberia, and these are gradually revealed to us as the book unfolds. He is unaware until the final pages that he is being pursued by an English soldier, Corporal

Calley and a Spanish officer Medina, an odd pairing, who have been instructed by a military tribunal to go after him. The reader has followed John's trip; these soldiers achieve the same journey by horse, and their pursuit is detailed as they trace John's trail. Events evolve, and John and Emily venture back to Glasgow, where they learn of their trackers. They return back to their island retreat and these journeys between the islands, and the earlier voyages provide Andrew Miller opportunity to show his love of the sea, and knowledge of sailing, as seen in "The Crossing".

Each year the county Local History Association makes an award for what the judges believe to be the best published article on an aspect of Gloucestershire’s local history during the preceding year, writes John Dixon. It is named after Bryan Jerrard, the first chairman of the GLHA. It came to the notice of Tewkesbury Historical Society in 2003 when it was won by Sam Eedle, and since then THS have been nominated nineteen times. The most successful THS nominee has been Derek Benson, whose first article appeared in

Further history award for Derek 2003 and, in all, he has been nominated seven times. This year, for the first time, a runner up has been announced – and it was Derek for his article in THS Bulletin 27 (2018) entitled ‘The 1714 Coronation Riot in Tewkesbury’. Derek’s article was inspired by a visit to the ‘Secret Garden’ of the Tudor House Hotel where there is a plaque: “The old oak door carries the battle axe scars inflicted upon it by Jacobite rioters during the Coronation of King

George I”. 1714-1715 was a turbulent time in British politics as apparently supporters of Catholics and Protestants competed to ensure that their nominee became succes-

sor to Queen Anne (made famous by ‘The Favourite’ film). This passion was felt in this riot in which the occupier of the house suffered the indignity of losing his wig as well as

his windows. Derek has revealed that nothing is as simple in history as we would like it to be and he explains thoroughly all the issues surrounding it. Suffice it to say that

A new shirt sponsorship deal for Tewkesbury’s Junior Darts Academy Clive Burgess from Tewkesbury is Production Manager for CDW Systems in Gloucester (part of the East Manor Group) and manages a busy factory with over forty staff. For most people this would keep them busy enough! In his spare time, however, Clive runs Tewkesbury Junior Darts Academy providing an introduction to the sport for 8 to 18 year olds, as featured in April's Tewkesbury Direct. When the Directors of East Manor Group (which includes CDW, Clearway Doors & Windows and Designex Cabinets) heard about Clive’s efforts they offered to sponsor shirts for members through Clearway and Designex. HOLIDAY PLANS SCUPPERED FOR ZAK THE DOG When the Midsummer floods hit Tewkesbury after a week of almost incessant rain in mid June both the Avon and Severn river levels rose sharply and put the area on flood alert which caused problems for visiting boaters. Five narrowboats sought refuge at Avon Lock on the new flood proof moorings where they were monitored closely by Lock Keeper Nicola

Pearce with their dog Zak who were on holiday and heading for Sharpness decided to leave their boat at Tewkesbury and go home as Zak needed to get his paws on dry land. Severn Unit members used one of their boats to evacuate them and get them ashore. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We were pleased that the unit have been able to give assistance to these visitors. As well as helping Zak and his family we have also taken other people ashore for shopping trips and another boat dog Minnie was grateful for a boat ride to dry land so she could have her walk. We have also

been on a number of river patrols checking

that there are no problems with any of the

moored boats along the river.”

Its licensing policy was last reviewed in 2016 and the time has come to review it again. A number of changes have been proposed to provide clarity, promote consistency and maintain high standards, but the council now needs to hear thoughts and opinions on the proposals from members of the public. Walker. Park with care in the centre of Dumbleton, near the church and entrance to Dumbleton Hall (now an hotel). Cross the stile in the hedge next to Nutmeadow House. Do not join the

Winchcombe Way, but take the path on the left which follows the boundary fence of the house, and keep walking along the same line across the field to a gap in a hedge, where you meet a track coming

Ignore other paths and keep walking until you reach the busy B4078 (2). Go through the gate and cross over to Mill Cottages, which are opposite. Bear slightly left and look for the drive next to the cottages. Go through the gate and walk down the long drive until you reach Mill Farm (3). Carry on ahead with Mill House on your right

and go down the slope towards farm buildings. Bear right and walk past the old mill on the river Isbourne (to your right) to join the Isbourne Way (4). The mill was built from Dumbleton Brick: a brickworks was established near the village during the 1850s to provide building materials for Dumbleton Estate. Turn left and follow the path across the fields until you meet a lane (5). Go right and walk along the road, over the River Isbourne and up the slope into Worm-ington Village. In Wormington, look for the tiny church on the left (6). Take the

(Note: on some maps this track is not marked as a public right of way). Retrace your steps back to Dumbleton. The churches in both Dumbleton and Wormington are worth closer inspection.

Due to the concerted efforts or our knitters, stitcher-uppers, sellers and donators of chocolate eggs we have managed to raise this magnificent sum for the Children’s Hospice at Worcester. Easter being almost as late as it can be this year helped as it meant that there was more time to sell and also more time to knit and sew. I think we were all flagging towards the end but we soldiered on and I think that everyone involved is delighted with the amount raised for this very worthwhile charity. We were so fortunate this year that we did not have to buy any chocolate eggs. They were all donated and gratefully received, from the smallest gift to the largest. A big thank you to all and especially Mel, the fundraiser at Acorns who worked tirelessly to obtain eggs and to sell many Easter Animals. We used to be able to say just Easter chicks but now we have so many different species from chicks, chicks with hats, bears, bears with noses, Rabbits, Ducks on the water, Owls, Sheep, Cats, 2 Cockerels and 1 Dinosaur!! I wonder what we will get next year?!!

Twyning School, the present and the past Twyning Council School opened in 1907, and a hundred and twelve years later it is still a thriving centre for education in the village. A black and white photograph shows the school, at a time, judging by the style of clothing worn by the pupils, shortly after opening. Remarkably little has changed to the building, although it has been extended to meet the needs of an increased local population, much of it remains as built. The ventilators on the roof remain, as does the

bellfry, but the visible tree on the green has now gone. The recent photo shows, the addition of a clock under the gable, replacement railings and rebuilt brickwork above the door. Village schools do bring communities together and play a vital part in introducing young people to good education.

SEVERN UNIT MVS LOOK OUT FOR LITTER IN RIVER AVON While clearing litter from the river between Tewkesbury and Strensham, Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service retrieved a large agricultural type sack from the riverbank just above the M5 bridge by Bredon. Head of Unit Nic Price said “A crew on our training boat MVS Minerva investigated the item and removed it before it became a hazard to navigation and wildlife and it may well have caused possible pollution as we had no idea what had been inside it. Gym & Tonic, completed another mud run this weekend (Zeus no fear on wheels) 5 mile obstacle course pulling Danny Marshall in a wheel chair around the course. This was probably one of the hardest mud runs we have done to date as so much of the race we had to carry Danny or he had to crawl as the wheel chair would not get through. We even got awarded a trophy for best team as we completed every obstacle and showed great team work in getting Danny around the course. CRACKING JOINTS Cracking joints or “Crepitus”, as it is medically known, is a common occurrence and most people will experience it at some point in their lives. Many people have heard someone at some point saying that joint cracking will lead to arthritis. This is not true and has never been proven. However, when you put your joint through the process of a movement in order to result in a click or pop this causes a mirco-stretch of the ligaments which hold the joint stable. This, on a once in a while basis, does not cause any problems. However, habitual cracking of the same joint results in a longlasting stretch of the ligaments associated to the joint. This in turn results in hypermobility of the joint. This creates more need to crack the joint, as the hypermobile joint is not utilised in its full range of motion. Hypermobile joints are unstable and this instability has been shown to be more susceptible to degenerative conditions. If, like many people, you find your joints crack on their own, as

NEWTOWN W.I. David Clark had been a Councillor at Worcester Guild Hall for 10 years and when he became Mayor he looked into the history of the building. He discovered cells beneath the Court room and began to research the lives of people who had been held there. This led him to a group of 8 Worcestershire women who had been transported to Australia in the late 18th century. Their crimes were mainly stealing a piece of clothing or food. However life in Australia turned out to have more opportunities than they would have had here with them raising families and being given land after they had served their sentences. WEST COUNTRY LEGENDS BOUND FOR TEWKESBURY One of the most enduring and popular bands in the West Country, The Wurzels, will play a special concert at Tewkesbury’s Watson Hall this month. Wurzelmania first hit the UK in the 1960s when the band, then fronted by the late Adge Cutler, scored a popular hit with ‘Drink Up Thee Cider.’ Adge’s reign as king of ‘Scrumpy and Western’ sadly came to an end in 1974, when he died following a car accident near the Severn Bridge. But the band continued and achieved a Number 1 single in the UK, ‘The Combine Harvester’ after being championed by Noel Edmonds. Further charts hits and TV appearances followed, and they have continued to tour and achieve great success at festivals - as well as releasing albums of their good-time material. 䡵 Cheddar cheese maturing in Gough’s Cave The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company started making traditional cheese in 2003, and they are one of many family-owned artisan businesses whose produce we are proud to offer at Teddington Stores. Unpasteurised milk is freshly delivered to its dairy in the village of Cheddar each morning. GRETSCH ‘CHET ATKINS’ 6120 When the teenage Chet Atkins finally managed to scrape enough money together to buy his first electric guitar and amplifier, he had a problem. The nearest supply of electricity was a very long walk from his father’s shack in Fortson, Georgia, writes Paul Thomas. Born in 1924, Chester Burton Atkins was a man firmly rooted in the powdery top-soil of depression-era America. A character from The Grapes of Wrath made good. Handsome, modest, determined; Chet gradually made progress in a music industry dominated by hugely popular radio shows with names like; National Barn Dance, Country Music Jubilee and The Grand Ole Opry. A forward-thinking innovator, Atkins developed a unique jazz-influenced picking style, using his thumb for the bass notes and three fingers for the treble strings. In an industry that promoted both kinds of music (Country and Western), Chet’s style was considered by some to be “not country enough” and he found himself booted off a number of the more conservative radio stations. Perhaps it was this rebellious edge that brought him to the attention of the Gretsch guitar company in 1955. Gibson had their Les Paul signature models and Gretsch wanted to follow suit. Chet Atkins was more than happy to oblige. The first (and arguably the best) Gretsch/Chet Atkins collaboration was the 6120. An enormous, glorious, bright orange, semi-acoustic guitar. For a man as understated as Chet Atkins, it comes as something of a surprise that he was actively involved in the design of this most flamboyant of instruments. Indeed, it is said that Chet far preferred the more sedate Country Gentleman signature model which was issued shortly after the 6120. But it was too late. The orange monster had been unleashed! First Duane Eddy then, even more famously, Eddie Cochran ripped the guitar from the hands of country pickers and made the 6120 a rock’n’roll icon. By the 1980’s, Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats had grabbed a Gretsch and was rocking this town. Soon no pop video was complete without at least one Gretsch featuring strongly. Interestingly, in 1980, Atkins swapped his allegiance to Gibson where he felt more at home with his friend and one-time rival, Les Paul. However, that was not the end of the Chet Atkins models. In 2007, Fender acquired Gretsch, shifted production to Japan and resurrected these iconic signature guitars to great effect. Without their signature models, it is unlikely that either Chet Atkins or Les Paul (Chester & Lester) would be remembered as anything other than quaint and quirky country innovators from a bygone age. As it is, their names are forever synonymous with loud, fast rock’n’roll. And for Chet Atkins, in particular, it has to be the ultimate irony that such a modest man is responsible for the world’s flashiest guitar! What became known as the Battle of Tewkesbury – the final battle in the Wars of the Roses, between the houses of York and Lancaster - took place on a small field just outside the town. Enthusiasts travel from all over Europe and further afield to take part - all of them authentically dressed and armed, and many living with their families in medieval-style camps for the whole weekend. In addition to the battle re-enactment, there is a medieval market and entertainment for all ages, plus a large beer tent with a wide range of real ales, not forgetting that medieval favourite – mead. Despite all these attractions entry is free, with donations very welcome (and essential for the future of the event!) The main events of the weekend take place

Summer Events at Tewkesbury Abbey Several special summer events will take place in and around Tewkesbury’s beautiful abbey this summer. The lawns of Abbey House play host to an outdoor concert by Tewkesbury Town Band on Sunday 7th July with Pimms and soft drinks being served. Audience members are invited to bring a picnic, from 6pm, with the music starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from the Abbey shop. Singers from the cathedral, collegiate and recital choirs come together in Tewkesbury Abbey each year for a memorable week of ‘Musica Deo Sacra’. Directed by Carleton Etherington with organist Paul Walton, the choir will sing some of the finest music written over the centuries, in a liturgical setting from Monday 29th July until Sunday 4th August. 2019 is a particularly special year as it marks the fiftieth anniversary of the festival. BRISTOL CHANNEL CHALLENGE FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS In early June Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members went on their annual offshore training trip down the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel visiting Portishead, Watchet and Cardiff. Throughout the trip the changeable weather and high Spring Tides made for some exciting and challenging passages. Regional Head of Seamanship Tim Huckvale said “Eleven members in five boats including our own training vessel Minerva took part and it was a very successful training cruise. Timings

were imperative especially when we were in the top part of the Severn Estuary and everyone learned a lot. We had to alter our original plans due to adverse weather and sea conditions and the approach of Storm Miguel meant returning to Sharpness before it struck.”

Well! It is that time of the year again Tewkesbury Art Society, are holding their annual “SUMMER EXHIBITION”, at The Methodist Church Hall, by The Cross, Barton Street. From Saturday 20th July 2019 until Saturday 27th July, 10am until 4pm (Sorry closed on Sunday). Please note, NO parking at the church, but there are pay and display car parks near by. Over 100 original paintings for sale. Plus various Greeting cards at reasonable prices. Entrance and Refreshments are Free! The Hall is totally disabled friendly. This year the members competition is called “Towards Abstract” which will make an interesting challenge to say the least. The winner will be presented with The Stagecoach, award, to keep for the year. Members will vote for their favourite picture during Preview evening and the winner presented with the Kershaw Cup. Again we are holding “The Walking Exhibition”, this is where we are very grateful to over 50 Town shops for their kind permission for Art Society members to exhibit one painting in their shop window, this has proved very successful during last few years. Each picture can be purchased by taking the details down to the Methodist Church Hall between 20th and 27th July, between 10am-4pm. Both Exhibitions coincides with “Tewkesbury in Bloom” which will be in full flow, so the art will help to enhance the already beautiful displays and visa versa. Painted in the style of the time, an aerial view, it features St Giles Church and the thatched roof of the Fox and Hounds pub. There are a couple of lines taken from a poem on Bredon, written by A E Houseman, an academic and poet from the early 20th century, who published his work in, A Shropshire Lad. 䡵 Overbury Street Market The annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 13th July. The market, which celebrates its 41st birthday this year, takes place between 10am and 12noon against a picturesque backdrop of stone cottages, St Faith’s Church (which dates back to Norman times) and the 18th century Overbury Court. During a hectic two hours, there's an opportunity to pick up unusually high quality bargains. A local food range will include tender Overbury Farms lamb, and honey produced from orchards in the parish. Anne's Pantry will also offer a range of homemade cakes and other goodies. Stalls include the ever popular ‘Going for a Song’ - overflowing with paraphernalia of all descriptions. Other stalls have a huge range of things including books, toys, DVDs, plants, crafts, garden seating, jams and preserves; the list goes on and on. Talented local artists display their work, and there will be live music, tea, coffee, cake and ice creams served in

Berkeley House garden. Whitcombe Garden (a member of the National Gardens Scheme) opens for relaxation and meandering, and the Friends of Overbury School will be organising fun activities for children. The raffle has magnificent prizes to be won, and there is a good bottle stall and tombola too. Mouth-watering bacon butties can be enjoyed - and are ready prior to market opening. Probus visits the Welsh Assembly and the Royal Mint Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club recently embarked on one of our occasional outings, this time a coach trip to the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. After we arrived and having endured very strict airport-style security, we were introduced to the Assembly building by our guide Richard Wyn Jones who told us about the history of the building which was designed by worldrenowned architect (Lord) Richard Rogers. The building was completed in 2006 and is designed to be very environmentally efficient by maximising the use of natural light, the capture of rainwater and the use of geothermal energy using heat pumps hundreds of feet below ground. We started our tour in the upper level above the Assembly chamber, a public space which fea-

tures a wonderful internal curved roof made of red cedar, chosen for its durability and zero maintenance over many years. This forms a gigantic tree-shape which descends to become the roof of the debating chamber below. We then entered the visitors’ gallery overlooking the Assembly chamber. The chamber is designed in the semi-circular style of many similar government chambers around the world, rather than the confrontational Westminster model. As well as answering all our questions about the Welsh Assembly and the political processes particular to the

devolved Government, as a native Welsh speaker Richard was able to give us an excellent insight into the use of the Welsh language and customs and the characteristics of the Welsh political model, not least the use of proportional representation rather than the first past the post Westminster system. The second part of our day out was a short trip from Cardiff to Llantrisant to the Royal Mint where we were first given a short presentation on the history of coinage in Britain and of the Royal Mint itself. The Mint has come a long way over the last 1000 years and is now a sophisticated industrial operation. We observed the production area where over a billion one pound coins are produced each year. However we were somewhat surprised to discover that not only does the Mint produce all the coins that we use every day, but makes and exports currencies for many foreign countries around the world. The Mint also pro-

duces one-off specialist coins for collectors and perhaps even more surprisingly, military medals and the medals of the 2012 Olympics, all on display in the on-site Royal Mint museum. This was a fascinating two-centre outing, greatly appreciated by a good cross-section of Probus members, wives and guests. It was one of our very popular external visits which we organise at approximately threemonthly intervals – our next visit will be to the BBC studios in Birmingham which will take place in August. Does anyone remember chocolate crunch and pink custard from school dinners? Thanks to Pat and her wonderful cookery skills, we were able to taste that and a lot more during the evening. Also thanks to all members who brought in their favourite treats to share with the rest of us. When local lady, Sue McFeeley, heard about the Contact the Elderly scheme, she decided that she wanted to become involved and volunteered to be the area coordinator for Tewkesbury. Sue and I had a cup of tea together recently and she explained that the free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties

have been successfully running in the Tewkesbury area for about 18 months and she would now love to have more people taking part. It’s the most wonderful way of helping to combat loneliness and social isolation in the elderly. For the tea party guests, it’s great to have a date in the diary and something lovely to look

SWILGATE ROAD - SOUTH TO THE ABBEY

Last month we looked at Swilgate looking north but this month we turn south, picturesquely, towards the Abbey, writes John Dixon. In the delightful 1947 photograph, we obtain a clear view of the Abbey; in 2019 we can still see the Abbey but it is partly obscured by the former Magistrates Court built post-war adjacent to the grounds of the Girls’ High School. However, in 2015, that view was obscured by the 1970s replacement of the Swilgate homes. These unlamented designs have been recently demolished. Did High School teacher Mrs. Knoyle once live there? A group of families

inhabited the area from 1913-1947; the Cooks, the Panters, Parkers and Fowlers. Even ignoring the floods, this area is not always benign. In 1932 the body of a Fowler, who worked for the Council, was found drowned in the river ñ it was ‘thought he was blown into river by violent gales, as he was making his way home

from the Nelson Inn.’ One of the Fowler family is taken in the 1947 photograph with Yew Tree Cottages behind; they had been demolished by 1973 to be replaced by that unlamented house and, more recently, the houses with the splendid views, raised high enough ñ hopefully - to avoid being flooded.

HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT SEIZING AN OPPORTUNITY? Definition of 'opportunity' opportunity. An opportunity is a situation in which it is possible for you to do something that you want to do, writes David Slater. When the great library of Alexandria burned, it is often said, one book was saved. It was not one of the valuable books that had been housed there. That meant that a poor man, who was educated enough to be able to read a little, bought it for a just a few coins. A real bargain ! Actually the book was pretty dry and boring, but lodged in between its pages there was something that was to prove very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum on which was written the secret of the Touchstone! “But what was the Touchstone?” I hear you ask. The touchstone was a

small pebble that had the power to turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying on a particular beach, among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly the same. So how could anyone tell which on was indeed the Touchstone? Well, the secret was simple enough. The real stone would be the one that felt warm, while ordinary pebbles all felt cold. Quite straightforward, really. The man was excited and so he sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, set up camp on the seashore, and began testing all the pebbles he could lay his hands on. He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, the chance was high that he might pick up the same

pebble hundreds of times. To avoid this, when he felt a pebble that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but didn't come across the touchstone. He went on and on this way. Picking up a pebble. Cold - throwing it into the sea. Picking up another. Throwing it into the sea. The days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months. Almost a year had gone by and he had discovered nothing. One day, not long after he had had some lunch and a short rest, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. The problem was that he had grown so used to the habit of picking up and throwing into the sea that that is exactly what he did this time! He threw it into the sea and it was only after he had let it go and it

Dear Tewkesbury Direct, Nine years after my husband died, having had Parkinson’s for 15 years, I, too, was diagnosed with it – a nice twist of irony! We used to do quite a lot of walking together and over the years raised a considerable amount for Parkinson’s - completing the 192 mile Coast-to-Coast path, walking in the Alpujarras mountains in Spain, etc. Knowing how vital funds are for research, respite care, specialist nurses, etc, I decided to put my walking boots on again to help raise money for Parkinson’s. So, on 20th July 2019 I shall be attempting to walk 25 miles – in one day!! The challenge is to take part in the annual pilgrimage from Strata Florida abbey in mid-Wales to Abbeycwmhir, across hilly country - part of which has no footpaths!
