by Helen Dunmore Paperback, £8.99 This month's review is a salute to an author who sadly passed away in the summer soon after this her last novel was published in hardback. It has been out in paperback for a while now, but as a tribute to a great storyteller, and also a poet; her last collection "Inside the Wave" also came out this spring; I thought it fitting to end this year's reviews with a brief homage to Helen Dunmore "Birdcage Walk" is set in Bristol in 1792, where the housing boom is underway, until, events across the water in France, with the revolution, disturb the confidence in England. Mounting fear that unrest will cross the channel, disrupts the successful career of John Diner Tredevant. Following the death of his French first wife, Lucie, he has recently married Lizzie Fawkes, the book's main character, but all is not necessarily as it seems. The story tells us about Lizzie's life before her marriage, with her mother and step-father, and how her new husband jealously tries to guard her from them. This theme filters through the book, but we also hear all about the terrace of houses Diner is building, and the escalating problems as his funding dries up when he is unable to sell any properties. His possessiveness increases as his troubles worsen, and then as Lizzie seeks some life away from the home where often her only company is their maid. The events unfold, but as ever with Helen Dunmore it is the incidental characters she introduces which add so many dimensions to her stories, the descriptions

of Clifton, and the dark distant Wales. This is a story to sit and enjoy during the dark winter nights, and we have had many customers who have praised this book, which has already proved a good book selection for reading groups. This her 15th book ends a career which saw her win the Orange prize in 1996 for "A Spell of Winter", and to be nominated for many other awards. Her short ghostly tale "The Greatcoat" should not be missed along with her two novels about Leningrad, "The Siege" during the terrifying events as the Nazi army surrounded the city, and then "The Betrayal" picks up the lives of some of the survivors in 1952 under the oppression of Stalin. There are so many good reads to list, "The Lie" and "Exposure" to name but two of her later books which have been featured in Tewkesbury Direct. LOCAL HISTORY MATTERS by John Dixon

Palestine 1917: a local connection Although we are in a new year, events in Jerusalem in December might live with us for some considerable time in the future, writes John Dixon. It was with perfect - if unintended - timing, that Mr. Trump has brought Jerusalem once more to our attention. A century ago, we were very focused on it because on 31st December 1917 the British finally won control of Jerusalem after a bitter battle. Between 7-11 December 1917, the British army had achieved a rare victory. It captured Jerusalem from its then Turkish masters. This was a promised ‘Christmas present’ for PM Lloyd George and was, in part, intended as revenge for the defeat of the Army at Katia at Easter 1916. This defeat involved cavalry men from the Gloucestershire Hussars and in 1917 little was known about the atrocious conditions of their imprisonment. The army had learned lessons from that defeat – and two others in Gaza in early 1917 – and prepared thoroughly for this campaign. The politicians also showed

rare diplomatic qualities when it ordered victorious General Allenby not to bombard and to enter Jerusalem on foot so as not to insult the Palestinian people. That was as well because on 2nd November 1917 the British politician Balfour and French had made a secret declaration that, after the war, Palestine would become a Jewish state.

What was worse is that Allenby knew that part of the reason for his victory was the distraction of the Turkish forces deep in the desert by a successful guerrilla campaign led by Lawrence of Arabia (pictured) – who had promised that, in

return for Arab help, he would so his best to ensure that Palestine remained an Arab territory. Lawrence knew nothing about the Balfour Declaration and never forgave the British government for this treachery. As is often the case, conquering proves easier that holding on to conquests. From Boxing Day to 31 December, the Turks mounted a ferocious counter attack. This cost the life of one of Mr Chatham’s apprentice butchers, Arthur Joseph Sallis, on 28 December 1917. Today his body rests hopefully in peace - in the Jerusalem War Cemetery.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXHIBITS AT CROOME COURT Over forty paintings by Antony Bridge, artist in residence at Croome Park, are on display in the Court until 1st March. The exhibition throws new light on the views which unite Croome's restored parkland with the dramatic background of the surrounding landscape. Croome Court was the former home of the 6th Earl of Coventry, with a landscape park famously created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Situated off the A38 north of Tewkesbury, it is one of the National Trust’s most popular attractions in the region. We have learned that the site is shared by two separate businesses – ‘Gloucestershire Care Services’, which run the Hospital, and ‘New Docs’, which owns the Medical Centre with its two surgeries. We are urging the authorities to work together to open this gate as soon as possible during this first year, with all due care of patient and staff safety. The PPG is also joining with its neighbours in the Mythe Surgery to hold a Carers’ Event on Tuesday, 6th March 2017, where we can give our doughty band of carers the opportunity to meet those who can help improve their lives. FIRST FIVE ACTS ANNOUNCED FOR LAKEFEST Lakefest will return to Eastnor Castle Deer Park on August 9th-12th this year. THEN AND NOW UPDATE by John Dixon

80 HIGH STREET: AN UPDATE After the ‘Then and Now’ in December’s Tewkesbury Direct, I was delighted to hear form Liz, the daughter of Alex and Lily O'Sullivan who had lived at 80 High Street, writes John Dixon. This was the small house in front of the Sabrina which was not demolished until the 1970s. She corrected me over her father’s name! He was a sign-writer living there from 1947 to 1955) and used the front shop as his workroom so anyone could see him at work through the big window. He used to hand-letter some of the film posters, as well as designing paper sacks for Healings Mill. The house was rented from Francis H Bennett, the Sabrina’s director and manager. There was a separate room used as a store by the cinema, full of old reels and cables. Liz remembers her parents commenting about hearing film soundtracks through the flimsy walls. Once her mother decided to 'tidy up' some old-looking electric cables hanging in a corner – she used garden shears, resulting in a house blackout! The attic room is visible – it was the biggest room in the house cover-

ABBEYFIELD HOUSE 80 High Street in 1970 ing the entire area, in which they started impromptu parties, with no furniture, just cushions. Everyone sat on the floor. She remembers that an eccentric group was attracted - a German prisoner of war, Werner (Jaekel?), Jake Johnson (whom she believes made the 'Ancient Grudge' sculpture panel), Barbara Moore an art teacher, Roger Bigland from the Tudor House, Mike King and Mr Bennett’s daughter Noreen. After Liz’ family left for Woodmancote it was occupied by Stallard’s, the coal merchant, until it was demolished in

1974. It must have been 20 years before the Library was built. Her mother felt that the small yard at the back of the house was built over an ancient site – it was certainly studied by archaeologist Edna Linnell. The Library hosts photographs from the excavation.

Chief Petty Officer Ben Foster-Smith led the session and gave an in depth presentation on the possible causes of fires afloat and then discussed the best way to deal with them. Members also had the opportunity to actually use some of the various types of fire extinguishers available to extinguish controlled fires. Head of Unit Nic Price said “This was a most interesting evening and we are most grateful to Ben for setting it all up. It was probably the first time many of us had actually used a fire extinguisher and many valuable lessons were learned. It was a really “hands on” evening.”

with John Dixon Tewkesbury Historical Society The building of the Sabrina was a recent development on the site and in 1933 it caused the demolition of three houses, writes John Dixon. 81 High Street was a substantial property with grounds sufficient for a three horse stable and greenhouses. Separating the Nos 81 & 82 was Garrett’s Alley. Little is known except that it was probably named after John Garrett and was in existence between 1808 and 1900, when it was closed before demolition for its grander future in 1932. No. 82 may have been a smaller property but, as the picture (below) shows, it was something of an architectural gem with its agreeable semi-circular first-floor window. Once possibly the Seven Stars Beerhouse, by 1861 it had become a baker’s shop - was it then that it was re-built? In 1903 we see the proprietor, Thomas H Acton, standing to attention as his flour is delivered as well he might, as in 1891 he and his wife had been porters at the Workhouse in the Gloucester Road. (The name of the alley to the right is unknown.) In 1911 it was uninhabited but it was converted into a shop and post office run by William Pond from 1914 until its demolition in 1933. This photo suggests it was doing well. It shows the value of Facebook’s ‘ Good Old Days’ making these photos public because, otherwise, most photos of it show a business in decline It also gives us a hint of the hitherto unknown No. 83: it boasted “2 excellent cellars, 4 bedrooms, closet, garden and brew house in Bishops Alley”. From 1841-51, it was owned by butcher Elizabeth Bishop who had the right to name Bishops Alley - the only alley name which survived with any distinction after the development of the shopping precinct. (An extended version of this article is published in Then and Now Vol. V).

December 2017 has seen the publication of the second volume of John Stretton’s railway autobiography, entitled Garratts and Guitars Volume 2. Following on from volume 1 - 1955-1985 was released in October 2016 and sold out within four weeks, this latest covers the years 19852015 and, as with its predecessor, incorporates relevant world events, sport (especially Leicester City) and music (especially Duane Eddy) as well his own recollections. A WALK IN THE WOODS With the shorter days still with us, and the weather unpredictable, a walk through woodland can be the best choice. Tiddesley Wood near Pershore is a lovely nature reserve which is rich in flora and fauna, providing interest year round.

Tiddesley covers around 200 acres and is believed to date back some 6,000 years. Our walk takes us through the heart of the woodland, although you can wander along many waymarked paths here as long as you pay heed to the flags and notices warning you when you are near to the gun firing range! Plans are displayed and the woods’ entrances and are also available on the trust’s website. Please note dogs should be on leads throughout the reserve. Park in the Trust’s car park on the Besford Bridge Road, about half a mile west of Pershore. Leave the car park and join the track (1) which leads to the woods (see photo left). As you enter the wood, keep straight ahead on the main broad track, ignoring the turnings to the left. Forestry work is ongoing here, and the

Bear left here - and at the next junction bear right (6) down a path which can at times be slippery. At the bottom of the decent you will meet the bridleway again. by a wooden gate (7). Bear left and take the path into the woods here, and follow it until you meet the main track once more (8).

TEWKESBURY CAMRA’S WINTER ALES FESTIVAL 2018 Banish all of those winter ailments at Tewkesbury CAMRA’s Winter Ales Festival 2018, to be held at the George Watson Memorial Hall, Barton Street, Tewkesbury from the evening of Thursday 1st (CAMRA members only) to Saturday 2nd February. Open to the public from Friday lunchtime, over 1200 beer and cider fans from around the UK (and beyond) are expected to attend. Tewkesbury CAMRA Branch Chair Steve Kisby said, “As ever the Festival will feature around 80 beers, sourced from all over the country and especially brewed for the winter season. Local beers will also feature heavily and a tasting panel will be selecting the Gloucestershire Winter Ale of the Year. Now in its 23rd year, the Festival has been selected to host the prestigious CAMRA South West Region Perry competition. Six of the best perries in the South West will be contesting for a place in the national final for Perry of the

Year, held at the Reading Beer and Cider Festival on May Day weekend. The six competing perries are from north Gloucestershire and include two from the Tewkesbury area – Minchews and Hartlands. Pubs Officer Pete Goodger added, “Each year the Festival produces a new commemorative glass promoting an aspect of the town. This year the glass logo is sponsored by Tewkesbury Royal British Legion and depicts Tewkesbury Cross bedecked with poppy wreaths, in commemoration of the 100th

anniversary of the ending of World War One.” One of the highlights of the festival is the very popular Saturday lunchtime performance by Tewkesbury Town Band, making the whole event an occasion not to be missed.

WINTER DRIVING TIPS AND PITFALLS TO AVOID with Anthony Stockman Snow : The best way by far is to have a spare set of wheels with snow tyres fitted, but for most, it’s a luxury that we will probably only need for a few days of the year – or will we? On frosty days, or any icy/wet conditions where the temperature is below 7.0 c, winter tyres have considerably more grip than their summer counterparts – and in snow, they are the difference between getting home and getting stuck, or worse! Lots of outlets now offer winter wheel/tyre packages and it’s worth considering if your car is essential to mobility. Not an option? Ok, go and buy some easy to fit ‘Snow Socks’ or simple ‘X frame tyre grips’ that easily adjust to many sized wheels. Snow chains are great, provided you know how to fit and adjust them, which nearly all won’t. They are seriously effective and will get you home, or out of trouble, but you can’t use them on bare tarmac, because if you do, they’ll vibrate and wear very quickly, as well as rip the road surface to shreds. Got none of those? Ok, the basic rule of snow driving is to try to KEEP MOVING gently

and if it’s fresh snow:MAKE YOUR OWN TRACKS, don’t follow someone else’s. You will have more control in fresh snow than on hard –pack made by a previous vehicle. In snow, with front wheel drive, if you accelerate too hard while turning and break traction, the car will want to go in the opposite direction to the way you’re steering, so lift off to regain control. Most cars these days have ABS, (anti-lock brakes for the uninitiated), but they work best in a straight line, so bear that in mind if you’re trying to avoid an obsta-

cle. They won’t help you much if you’ve overcooked a bend, but they will allow you to crash under control! Washers: Double up the concentration of screenwash in cold weather to avoid freezing the contents of the washer bottle – and if the washers are frozen, don’t keep operating the washers in the hope that they might work, because you’ll burn out the washer pump. Wipers: If the screen is frozen, then it’s a fair bet the wiper blades will be frozen to the screen as well, so DON’T switch them on until you’ve

Anthony Stockman thawed the screen. The wiper motor is a very powerful piece of kit that will easily rip the rubber on the blades in an attempt to wipe the screen and then you’ll need some new ones. And if it’s been snowing like it did last month – and there’s accumulated snow on the roof, get it off before you drive. There’s a good reason for this, because, as the car warms up, the snow will start to lose its grip and the moment you hit the brakes, the whole lot will come cascading down the screen and if

WINTER DRIVING TIPS AND PITFALLS TO AVOID continued the wipers are going the blades will be trapped, but the motor will just bend the wiper arms and possibly destroy the linkage. Easiest way to clear your frosted screen? A jug of hand hot water poured across the top of the screen and allowed to run down as you work your way over is much quicker, cheaper and easier that de-icer and a scraper, unless you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. DON’T use very hot water from a kettle; you’ll very likely crack the glass. Tailgate wiper: The most forgotten and abused piece of equipment on a car:- Yes, we use it to clean the rear screen, but how many of you remember to turn it off when it’s done the job? Almost every day, I see the poor old tailgate wiper struggling to wipe a dry rear screen, long after the rain has stopped and the roads are clear. Remember: the

wiper needs water to lubricate the blade and glide across the glass. When the glass is dry, the blade wants to stick and the loading on the motor increases dramatically. Leave it on long enough and you’ll mark the screen and shorten the life of the tailgate wiper. Wiper blades: They wipe all kinds of muck off the screen, some of which ingrains itself into the blades, causing streaks as they wipe. You can easily revitalise them, by lifting the blade off the glass and running a damp sponge up and down the rubber. You’ll be amazed at the black line left on the sponge, but the wipers will work fine again. I’ll leave all the obvious things like tyre pressures, levels and checks and move on to the last important item: Headlights: Simple piece of advice if one of your headlights is not working – and that is:-

unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, don’t attempt to change your own headlight bulbs; it’s far too easy to put the replacement in incorrectly and bend or break the retaining clip, resulting in a beam that’s looking for the nearest aircraft. I see this all the time and it’s the commonest MOT failure item, because the beam pattern goes awol. Worst case scenario, if the clip or mounting is damaged – is a new headlight unit, which is a lot more expensive than a bulb! DON’T GO THERE!

2018 will be a year of anniversaries for many people, hopefully most will be celebratory, but there will also be other more momentous events that justify reflection; none more than the end of the First World War, so maybe one book to consider reading this year would be "Peacemakers Paris Peace Conference 1919" by Margaret MacMillan. Having started by mentioning a more sombre historical tome, why not also a novel "All for Nothing" by Walter Kempowski, which we featured as a Tewkesbury Direct Book of the Month and which recalls the closing months of WW2 on the Russian/Prussian border. A favourite with several local reading groups. There are some very good books coming out into paperback in the next few months, and in my view one of the best will be"Reservoir 13" by Jon McGregor, which is my book of the year for 2017, and one of our

customers said, and I paraphrase "I will not read a better book next year" - what more can I add. This seems an opportunity to recommend James Kelman's "Dirt Road" a book with a musical theme, about a visit to America by a Scottish lad. One of our customers made a strong recommendation in the early summer for "Lincoln in the Bardo" by George Saunders. I hope she put some money on it as it won the Man Booker prize this year, readers can look forward to the paperback becoming available in February. Poetry is one of those genres that many people do not sample, maybe 2018 should be the year to branch out, try Alice Oswald's latest slim volume, "Falling Awake". Readers of nautical novels, the like of Patrick O'Brian and Julian Stockwin, to name but two of several of our customer's favourites might be interested in considering a quartet of

books featuring HMS Surprise, Captain Aubrey's ship sailing again under the penship of Alan Lawrence, we have four books which readers of maritime adventures have enjoyed. In composing this sample of titles I have tried to avoid just my own preferences, and to add some broader suggestions, why not consider reading some good factual history. There are a lot of good books around, and the choice on our shelves covers anything from early Roman history though to more recent times. Science is an area for many people, not my favourite subject at school, but that is another matter; but here again there is a large diversity of books to read, very approachable like the popular books of Yuval Noah Harari. At alison's we endeavour to stock books on most subjects, but of necessity have to avoid becoming too specific or too technical, but

The answer is I shall look forward to completing the task in future years, as one of the

Residents of Tewkesbury can look forward to 2018’s Christmas lights already! £1200 raised to safeguard town’s festive lights Christmas 2017 may not be quite upon us yet, but the residents of Tewkesbury can, nonetheless, look forward to Christmas 2018 after town centre property agents, Andrews confirmed that the raffle which the branch organised at this year’s lights switch-on, had raised a staggering £1231.06! The funds raise will be put towards staging next year’s display. With the local council not financing the annual lights, Tewkesbury Christmas Lights was formed as a local charity to ensure the town didn’t miss out on the festive spirit. The team at Andrews was only too happy to help as Lettings Manager, Vicki Kerr, explains: “Andrews was built on an ethos of giving back to the communities in which we operate and, so, it was only fitting that we should roll our sleeves up to support the Christmas

Lights campaign. “Visiting other local businesses, we secured 28 prizes towards our which was raffle launched at this year’s lights switch-on, and supplemented this with our own top prize of an iPad. The response from the local people was phenomenal and having now totted everything up, we’ve raised over £1200 which will ensure the town has another stunning display of Christmas lights next year.”

HISTORICAL DISCOVERIES with Stuart Borley Local Archaeologist and metal detectorist, Stuart Borley, unearthed this most unusual object recently. Found in the Tewkesbury area the object appears to have the lines of a, model of, or, indeed, a very small Flintlock pistol. Flintlock guns started to appear in the 1700s as the first development of the handgun. They were originally smooth bore, inaccurate, and susceptible to damp and misfires. The artifact lacks the flint striker and the ramrod, and measures just 12cm in length, which could have meant it was a discreet, close protection weapon or, perhaps

a gunsmiths sales sample. Stuart welcomes any

The earliest written records of the St Bernard breed are from the monks at the Alpine hospice of Great St Bernard in 1707, writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only Pet Supplies. These were working dogs and were smaller than today’s St Bernard show dogs, they were about the size of a German Shepherd Dog. The ancestors of this breed shared history with the Sennenhunds. (Swiss mountain or Swiss cattle dogs). They were descendants of the molosser type dog, brought into the Alps by the ancient Romans. St Bernard dogs were used by dairymen from the French Alps, for herding, hunting, watchdogs and search and rescue. The Alpine traveller’s hospices of Great and Little St Bernard are located on treacherous mountain passes that were occupies by monks. The dogs are thought to have been introduced to the monasteries in 1660. St Bernard dogs never received any special training from the monks. Instead, younger dogs learned how to search and rescue from the older dogs. The earlier St Bernard dogs looked very different from the St Bernard of today. Severe winters from 1816-1818 resulted in increased numbers of avalanches which killed off the majority of the St Bernard breeding stock

while they were performing rescues. In order to preserve the breed, the remaining St Bernard dogs were crossed with the Newfoundland breed in 1850. Although they gained in size by this cross, unfortunately they lost much of their use as search and rescue dogs in the snowy climate of the Alps. This was because the long fur they had inherited would freeze and weigh them down. The monks of St Bernard hospice deny any St Bernard dog has carried casks or small barrels around their necks. This was popularised by an 1820 painting by Edwin Landseer. The monks did, however, keep casks around for photographs by tourists. The St Bernard breed was standardised and approved in 1888 and since then became the Swiss national dog. Nigel Sligh
