A seasonal treat for children in hospital Local lady Sarah Hutchings presented a cheque for £1040 to the children's ward at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. The money was raised through a raffle and the generosity of customers at Sarah's Auction Room in Northway. Play specialist Chrissy Revell, said that the money would be more than enough to buy presents to give out on Christmas Day, to reward brave children, and also to celebrate birthdays throughout the year.

Tewkesbury School Textile students strutted their stuff on the catwalk of a special festive-themed fashion show last month. Designers from Years 9, 10, and 11 modelled their couture in a very impressive spectacular, with pupils from partner schools including Alderman Knight also taking part, wearing Tshirts printed with their own artwork. This is a rather unusual novel taking place over the last two months of 1746 and set in New York when it was newly an English settlement still inhabited by Dutch as well as British. The town was populated by only around 7,000 people in those days so everyone knew everybody else's business, and that is the supposition that drives this book. Mr Smith, as he is basically called throughout the story, arrives on All Hallows day in New York, and presents himself, post haste at the offices of Lovell & Co with a Bill of Exchange worth the substantial sum of £ 1000.00. This is more than enough to cause concern to Mr Lovell and his partner Mr van Loon. Is the draft false? Is Mr Smith a con artist? Many questions are asked, but Lovell, in welcoming Smith, introduces him to his two daughters, Flora, who is the intended of his partner's son, Hendrik, and her elder sister Tabitha, who Smith finds hard to understand, and she is certainly a "mixed up" lady. The morning sees Smith, now infamous throughout New York breakfasting in a coffee house where he meets Hendrik, and the Governor's secretary one Septimus Oakshott, the latter befriends Smith and later rescues him from certain death.

How Smith navigates the town, and the odd selection of characters that we are introduced to, tells a story with twists and turns, ups and downs, some comedy, some farce, alongside an adventure or two. Very little is as it appears, and the local population are very uncertain about the validity of Smith and his draft, but as the story unfolds we learn more about Smith and Septimus and a mixture of folk, and the characterisations that the author produces are impressive. This is a first novel, by an experienced nonfiction writer, and has as I write this review just been included in the shortlist for the Costa First Novel award. Will it win? Should it win? special awards. The ‘over and above’ category, won by Bettie was awarded to the lollipopper who goes beyond the call of duty

to help children, parents, their school and the local community. Each of the four category winners received a bespoke trophy to mark their achievement as well as a £500 holiday voucher to treat themselves to a well-deserved break during the school holidays. Bettie Ealand, from Tewkesbury CE Primary School, has worked as a Lollipopper for forty-two years. She described receiving the honour of the Over and Above Lollipopper: “This is absolutely great, thank you so much! “I've always enjoyed my time as a Lollipopper, it is so social and I love meeting all the different parents and children!” The National Lollipopper Awards are part of a drive to improve safety on the school crossing by deploying more of the iconic crossing wardens. Research in 2016 revealed that 55% of accidental child pedestrian casualties occur during the school run.

Maria’s dancing week aids Cancer Research

A Tewkesbury-based dance instructor has helped a charity close to her heart by pledging an entire week’s earnings to Cancer Research. Italian-born Maria Morelli works tirelessly as a mother of four young boys and a professional dancer while running a small (but growing) number of belly dance, zumba gold and pound fitness classes in and around Gloucestershire. Maria’s husband James told Tewkesbury Direct: “Maria's grandmother passed away in Italy at the hands of cancer, her grandfather was recently diagnosed with it as well as an uncle who has recently had treatment for it. “Cancer doesn't just affect those here in the UK and Maria's hatred for this condition has driven the first of her passionate and charitable gestures for the cause. “The smallest gesture can help immeasurably, so, for just one week in November, Maria danced and performed with her classes, coming home exhausted and sore as usual, but didn't pay herself a penny! Instead, she donated everything

Maria raised and donated treble figures for cancer research.” Maria began dancing at a very young age; she started to learn ballet and modern when she was just seven, and performed in theatres and festivals once she had gained certification with the Rome Academy of Ballet. Before relocating to the UK, she also danced around Italy’s Apennine hills doing Latin-

American and ballroom dancing. She moved to the UK in 2001, and is now a professional belly dance performer and a licensed teacher of belly dance, zumba, zumba gold and pound fitness. New novel from local author is based around local NT property Local author, Sara Downing, has published her fifth novel, The Lost Boy, which is centred around Croome Court - the National Trust house famous for its Capability Brown landscaped parkland. In the story, a young woman is found on the side of the A38 near Tewkesbury, with no memory of who she is and how she came to be there. Several years on and with a new life, old wounds are reopened when Clara sees a boy playing in the grounds of her stately home. Who is he and why does he think she should know him? friendship grows between Clara and the boy, Alfie, whilst her quest for knowledge

becomes all-consuming. When she discovers just how inextricably her past is linked, not only to Alfie’s, but to an event which happened centuries ago, she wonders what she should fear most – her past, or her future. The Lost Boy is centred around Croome Court, the National Trust property just across the border in Worcestershire. Several of the book’s characters hail from the Tewkesbury

and Malvern areas. The author Sara Downing lives close to Croome, with her husband and three children. Her daily dog walks in the beautiful grounds of the property have provided her with much inspiration for the novel. The village of Elmley Castle is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque of the Bredon Hill villages. Being on the north side of the hill, its pretty cottages are largely of ‘black and white’ half timbered construction. Neighbouring villages to the south of Bredon’s slopes tend to be built of stone, and possess a Cotswold character. At Elmley you feel your are on the edge of Shakespeare country, and very much walking through history. Queen Elizabeth really did sleep here. But not, as many people believe, in the ancient castle of Elmley. By the time of her visit, in 1575, the medieval fortress was already ruined. The Beauchamps who once held it as a seat had already moved on to Warwick Castle. Queen Bess actually stayed in a rather imposing manor house near the church, demolished about sixty years ago.

It is from the church at Elmley Castle that this month’s walk begins. Go through the gate and walk to the left of the church (1) and join the path which passes a duck pond on the right. Walk between two paddocks and into a field, then bear right (2), following the boundary until you reach a stile. Cross it (3) and follow the direction of the waymarkers diagonally across the field, passing the ‘lightning tree’ on your right. You are now in the ancient deer park.

䡵 (Above) The Queen Elizabeth pub has been tastefully modernised in recent years. It used to be a very traditional hostelry (one of three in the village until the 1990s), and this old sign hung at the front of the inn, depicting the 1575 visit of Queen Elizabeth I. Today some 500 fallow deer roam Bredon Hill: reputedly they are all descended from a dozen or so who escaped from here in the thirteenth century. The castle ramparts are above you to the right Go over a footbridge and stile, turn right and go through a metal gate on to a bridleway (4) which can be both muddy and slippy. Follow this uphill route for some distance, using the arrows to direct you to the ridge just below the summit of Bredon Hill, via a wood. Emerge from the wood on to a path and bear right (5). When you reach a gateway on the right (6) go through it, back into the wood, and down until you reach the cross tracks (7). Bear right and follow the trail back down the hill, until you reach a lane. This eventually becomes a tarmac road (Hill Lane) which will lead you back into the village, passing several attractive thatched cottages.Near the bottom, look for a gate into a field (8) Cross the field and rejoin the lane, turn right back to the village.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society We wonder if any readers can confirm that homes in North East Terrace have only had entrances back and front since about 1960? writes John Dixon. Before that, there was no access to the roadway under the arch from East Street with the only entrance being on the Chance Street side North East Terrace was an imaginative redevelopment of a former steam -powered stocking factory. The factory was built in 1860, by the Patent Renewable Hosiery Company, to provide employment after the decline of the hand weaving industry which had been so important. Unfortunately, the venture was unsuccessful and in twenty years it had closed. When the plot was sold off, it was split up between different owners George Jones was the builder who bought the factory in 1886 and developed it into homes. He was also responsible for installing the fea-

SEVERN UNIT MVS MAKE HISTORICAL DISCOVERY Tewkesbury Direct readers may well remember the article in the August edition about how Severn Unit MVS members had pulled a large unidentified object out of the River Avon near Tewkesbury Lock. It was made of wood with metal bands with a large metal ring but exactly what this mysterious object was has remained a mystery ever since until November. By chance on a visit to Portsmouth Dockyard some members of the unit were looking round HMS Warrior when Head of Seamanship Tim Huckvale spotted what was called a Coppering Punt or Balsa Raft on the deck and realised that the float from this was identical to that we had found earlier in the year. Tim said “Balsa Rafts were originally found mainly in the Pacific constructed from Balsa Wood and were adopted by the Royal Navy from the 1790’s. Balsa rafts or

Improved Route Launched for Tewkesbury Half Marathon The organisers of the Tewkesbury Half Marathon have today unveiled an improved start and finish for the Tewkesbury Half Marathon. A FOX’S TALE At Vale Wildlife Hospital we are reliant on people bringing small animal casualties to us themselves, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Although we have a team of full and parttime Care Assistants working every day of the year, we have so many animals in the hospital and undergoing treatment that we cannot send staff out to collect new ‘patients’ otherwise we would not be able to give the necessary level of care to those already here. We do, however, have a list of willing volunteers for some areas who we can call upon to help us out if the finder really cannot get the animal in to us (we are always looking for new volunteer ‘collectors’ if you would like to help us out in this way).

Unfortunately, our first attempt failed after she ended up underneath someone’s decking in their garden. Although decking may look nice it has been the cause of many failed attempts at catching injured wildlife for us. A few days later we got another call about the vixen and this time we managed to catch her.

REMOVALS 䡵 On the mend: wounded fox at Vale Wildlife Large mammals such as badgers, foxes and deer as well as certain species of birds i.e. swans, herons and larger birds of prey have to be handles and transported by people with experience due to the obvious risks involved so we do not expect our volunteer drivers to handle these. We will always send out one of our trained Care Assistants to injured larger animals, whether day or night, 365 days a year. Foxes are often in the news for all the wrong reasons, with allegations of them attacking babies or killing cats (neither of which I believe or have seen proof of) but the fox is actually a much loved animal, invariably coming near the top in favourite wild animal polls. One popular urban fox came in to Vale at the end of October with a very serious injury to one of her front legs. We received several calls

Concerned local residents were watching again and asked to be kept informed about her progress. When we first saw the extent of the injury, our immediate thoughts were that she would have to be euthanised but after cleaning the wound up we decided that we would see how she would cope with treatment. Specialist dressings were used, changed every two days (under anaesthetic) and gradually the wound began to heal. We were amazed by the changes every time we redressed it and we took photos at each stage to show the healing process. After six weeks of treatment she was released back to her territory with her local human friends there to watch her go. A brilliant result and proof that foxes are a much loved species. The Alleys of Tewkesbury, origins and history continued by Steve Goodchild There isn’t a lot left of Bank Alley, unless you look carefully. A starting point is the doorway to the left of the Hat shop, the one with ‘1664’ carved into the wood above the entrance. If you peer through the gate which closes it, the alley name can be seen. The building on the left used to be Hartland’s Bank, which is easy to tell if you look above the current shop sign. Walk down Post Office Lane to its junction with Back of Avon, and the remnants of the rear of the alley can be seen. Everything in this area has changed since the fifties. The unnamed path between the Priors Court flats and Elliot Court, down to the river, is the other end of the Alley. Between these remnants, the alley followed the wall of the car park. The concrete block wall in Post Office Lane was built to replace the steps at the point where the two joined. The wall has cut off Bank Alley forever and allowed the ground level to be raised after the houses in it were demolished. John Rogers describes the Bank Alley cottages, which were all on the north side, as ‘crowded with children and stocking fames’. Once there were thirteen, but this reduced to ten, to allow a block of four lavatories to be built. They were all three storeys, with one

room on each floor. In 1878, eight of the cottages were found unfit for habitation, and this is a recurring theme! Lack of sanitation was a problem right to the end. By the twentieth century, the Sanitation Committee were making

determined efforts to obtain closure orders. In 1913, Bank Alley hit the headlines when a cottage was sold for £1. In 1921, a Mr Mellor bought five for £33. The price might have been affected by a dispute going on at the time

between the Council and Mr Cole about four houses he owned which the Council said could not be made habitable without some of them being demolished, to let in some light. He protested that he’d bought them from his soldier’s gratuity and intended to modernise them. Eventually, the Council got their way, and insisted that he demolish one of them to provide a toilet and washroom, as well as light for the others. He seems to have simply abandoned them to dereliction. Right to the end, there was no electricity and no drainage except for gullies in the alley. There was one water tap in the ground floor living room. No sink; just a bucket. In 1938, an order was confirmed to demolish ten cottages, which was carried out in 1939. All that remains now in the place where hundreds of hard and sometimes tumultuous lives were played out is a carpark. There will be a small

exhibition of life in Bank Alley in ‘Out of the Hat’ during February; to find

POSITIVEâ€ˆTHINKING by David Slater Here we are at the beginning of another new year. The month January was actually named after the Roman god Janus. This god was most appropriate to the new year as he was portrayed as having two faces so that he could look ahead to the future and back at the past at the same time. As we wave goodbye to the old year we look forward to the new one. In truth, though, we all tend to be a little like Janus. We know what went right or went wrong in the old year.

We know what we did wrong and what we did right. We step back and decide that we hope to do a bit better this year. Some people make widely ambitious new year's resolutions. Others are happy to take a deep breath and take a step into the New Year hoping for the best. Let's have a look at the New Year for a moment. Right now it just looks like a massive block of time. We can see 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds.

Each of these individual units of time is a complete gift to us. We have not done anything to deserve it or earn it and, as we often hear people say, we can't buy time, This gift is given to each one of us be we rich or poor, strong or weak, educated or ignorant. Every man, woman and child the whole world over has the same gift of 24 hours in every day. It is up to each one of us what we chose to do with that time. We all have different ideas as to what we want to put that time to. We remember

that we can't stop time and we can't hurry it along. It marches on relentless. We can't actually bring back time; only in our minds through our memories; but we cant actually get into a Dr Who Tardis and revisit a specific time that we have lived through. Once a second has gone it is gone never to return. Yesterday is gone for ever. Tomorrow is totally unknown and even uncertain. What we have is the present moment, the here and now. I don't think there would be many people who would argue with the idea that time is one of the most precious possessions that we have. As we start a new year it is not fancy resolutions that we need to keep, it is a common-

sense approach that is going to be the most worth while. The choice is ours as to what we do with the time that we have. We can waste it. We can worry over it. We can spend it all on ourselves. We can invest it in helping others as well as ourselves. Try not to look at the whole new year as an entity. Break it up into its constituent parts. Allow it to become manageable. Try not to worry about things. You can spend so much time worrying about things that , in the fullness of time, never happen. What a waste of energy and emotion this can be. Yesterday has gone. You can only learn from that now. Tomorrow is not here so you don't have to

deal with that yet. Today, the gift, the present is with us right now and it is on this that we need to focus our attention and energy. The new year is there for all of us. The seconds are already starting to tick away. All we have to do is to decide whether we just allow the seconds to fly out of the window or whether we make up our minds to make sure that in this new year we make sure that every second will count. Time is too precious to waste especially as none of us knows just how much of this gift we are going to be blessed with. To each and every one of you have a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. A JANUARY MAKEOVER with Emma Hasa of Ell Hair Salon This month travel consultant Sibyl BrandonJones, who works at Courtney World Travel, Tewkesbury was treated to a make-over by Emma. Firstly Emma used i-prime foundation to even out Sybil's skin, then she applied i-conceal medium beneath her eyes, followed by i-tint cinnamon moisturiser this was sealed using i-powder light, iglow ice pop was applied to her cheeks to achieve a natural glow and finally i-slick decadence was applied to Sybil’s lips. Emma applied i-colour crystal quartz to Sybil’s eyelids and gave a smokey look to the corners using i-shadow Florence palette, then applied i-flick kohl liner on the upper lid, followed by i-flutter plum mascara to her eyelashes and finally i-groom pencil and brush on her brows. To complete her new look Sybil’s hair was styled using Eufora products and added movement was created using neuro straight irons. When Emma and Sibyl met they joked about improving perfection, and Emma’s response was to change Sibyl’s hair from straight to wavy and swap her usual lipstick to i-slick gloss as it is conditioning. Over the last few weeks we have seen an increase in the theft of motor vehicles, the thieves seem to have a preference for high performance models, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. The main areas have again been close to the M5, especially Northway and Newtown. Typically, your car is your second greatest investment after your home. The truth is that no car is theft-proof. A professional thief can steal virtually any car, anytime, and anywhere. So, how do you guard against the danger of theft? Three of the main reasons your car is stolen: • For “Joy Riding” • As a means of getting the thief home (the car is then dumped). • Stolen to order for export abroad. Vehicle theft is a “crime of opportunity.” With millions of vehicles to choose from, thieves usually opt for the “easiest car to steal” in the area. For a thief, the easiest car to steal is one that suits the thief's purposes, one that can be entered and started quickly, and one that can be moved from place to place undetected. When you begin installing barriers, you make your car harder to steal. The real goal is to make your car less inviting to a thief. Tips on how to prevent car theft: One of the fastest growing ways to steal your car is to steal your car keys. • Never leave your car keys in the hall or in the porch or on a convenient hook as this is inviting car theft. • Never leave your car engine running, even if you will only be gone for a minute. There have been many cars stolen on cold mornings when the owner leaves the car running on the drive to warm up.

• When you leave your car unattended, even for short periods, close the windows and sunroof, lock all doors and remove the key from the ignition. • Never hide a second set of keys in your car. • Do not leave important documents or other personal information in your vehicle. Thieves can use this information to steal your identity. • Don't leave your driving licence or registration documents in your car. These could help the thief sell or dispose of your car. • Make sure you remove your SatNav devices. Including wiping the mark from the windscreen created by the suction pad. • Ensure that you have removed all property from view. • Try to park in a busy well-lit area and avoid car parks that have a history of theft or breakins. • When you park your car in daylight, consider how the area may look like in the dark. Most car thefts occur at night. • Park with your wheels turned towards the kerb. Make your car tough to tow away. Wheels should also be turned to the side in car parks and driveways. • Always use your handbrake when parking. Leave automatic transmission in park and manual transmissions should be left in gear. • If you have a garage, use it. Nearly 50% of all car crime occurs right outside the house. • Consider having an engine immobilizer or fuel cut-out switch installed • Use a locking device on the steering wheel or transmission gear lever. These devices act as a deterrent; they are very visible and make it more difficult and time-consuming for the car thief. • If you are likely to leave your car unattended for a long period you should consider dis-

This Christmas more people than ever before stepped forward to sponsor a bulb for Tewkesbury’s Christmas lights. Local people made donations dedicated to loved ones (or as gifts) and names were hung on the Christmas Tree at the Methodist Church by the Cross (pictured right). All the donations made helped to cover the costs of the town’s Festival of Christmas Lights. A list of donors will be displayed in the Town Hall in the New Year.

RARE VISITOR TO ABBEY 9

Keen ornithologists were at Tewkesbury Abbey last month to try and catch a glimpse of a rare visitor to the British Isles. An Eastern Black Redstart (pictured) was seen in the Abbey Grounds - the first of its kind ever seen in Gloucestershire, and only the tenth ever recorded in the country. The birds are native to Central Asia and the Middle East, but migrate to Africa and parts of Eastern Europe to over-winter. Earlier this year bird watchers also sighted Eastern Black Redstarts in Lothian, Scotland and at Cleveland in the north east of England. Just one bird was spotted at Tewkesbury Abbey, so it is assumed that it was blown off course. After a few days, the bird was thought to have continued on its journey.
