Thanks to a vital piece of land that has been released to the borough council by Tewkesbury Wetherspoons and subsequent funding from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, the completion of a scenic riverside walk can now become a reality. The idea of a riverside walk was first introduced over 60 years ago when American soldiers staying in the town left the borough council a small financial legacy to provide improved access to the river. While much has been achieved since then such as the promenade in Back of Avon - the final link in the walk has never been achieved as a result of lack of access to the required section of land. However after extensive negotiations, Wetherspoons gifted the final vital piece of land to Tewkesbury Borough Council back in August

so that the walk could be completed. The council, more recently, applied for and match-funded a grant of £25,000 provided by Gloucestershire Environmental Trust in order to deliver the longawaited project. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Finance and Asset Management, Cllr Dave Waters, said: “We are delighted that we are finally able to start work

on this beautiful walkway after years of planning. “It has been a great community-led project and will provide new and improved access to the scenic riverside in Tewkesbury. “Once the walk is finished it will not only benefit visitors to the town but it will be a fantastic asset for local residents to enjoy.” The works will involve building a sec-

tion of the path, which will include metal railings, a new footpath in blue clay pavers, new kerbs and bollards to the St Mary’s Lane car park, and extensive work to the river bank. There will also be natural stone benches and fencing added to enhance the attractiveness of the area. It is expected the works will be completed in spring 2016. The idea of a riverside walk was supported by members of the public at a consultation held by the Tewkesbury Town Centre Master Plan team in 2011. Since the start of the 2015 financial year, The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust has offered grants of over £700,000 to local organisations. MUSEUM FUNDRAISING TALKS ARE EXTENDED A series of fundraising lectures for Tewkesbury Museum have proved so popular that they are being extended into the Spring. The talks have built up a good following each fortnight, with a wide range of subjects including an almost forgotten history of Tewkesbury's Boat-builders, an evening with the books of Tewkesbury author John Moore, followed by a John Moore themed Poems and Pints evening - and 'A Pilgrim's Progress' from Stoke Orchard to Santiago. The next date Tuesday January 12th at the Trinity Hall in Oldbury Road Tewkesbury, starting at 7pm. The talk will be given by Roger Workman on the history of his family’s award-winning business, Cotteswold Dairy. The museum in Barton Street is now too small to hold public talks, so the organisers have moved to Trinity Church Hall. All facilities are on one level with free parking in the adjacent Spring Gardens car park after 5.30pm. Entrance is just £3 which includes a cup of tea/coffee and cake. The talk is approx one hour with Q&A refreshments and will finish about 8.30pm (all out by 8.45). Tickets will be on the door, but hall has limited seating - so be early. YMCA RAILWAY PROGRAMME Tewkesbury YMCA Railway Society gets its 2016 programme underway on Tuesday 12th January with a presentation by Chris Wilkinson from the Worcester Locomotive Society. FROM A COURT TO A CASTLE In the mid-eighteenth century Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown set about transforming the countryside around Croome Court, creating one of England’s most celebrated parks. This was Brown’s earliest landscape - commissioned by the Earl of Coventry - but fell into a sorry state in the twentieth century as the owners simply could not afford to maintain it. The house was sold and used for various purposes until it eventually came into the stewardship of the National Trust, who acquired the grounds in 1996.

Over a twenty year period, the Trust has gradually brought Brown’s magnificent vision of bucolic England back to life - and work on the house is now underway. While our ‘there and back’ route crosses National Trust land it is via public footpaths and no fee is payable. Park, with care, at the roadside near the impressive arched gateway at Croome Court. (National Trust members may use the car park, but please check winter opening hours). Look for a five bar gate on the left, and go over the adjacent stile into a thicket. (1). Follow a concrete pathway which leads across some rough ground and eventually out into the wider parkland. To your right you can see the Rotunda, one of many architectural curiosities in Croome Park (2).

Croome River, an ornamental stretch of water, snakes across the grassland and in the distance the classical facade and columns of the Temple Greenhouse may be seen. Below to your left you can see the government buildings and installations of the former RAF Defford airfield, an important WWII station. Keep straight ahead and through a gate (3) into a small wood. Exit through a gate and walk across a field to a stile (4). Cross this and head towards a metal gate and into a meadow (5). Here the path descends and bears slightly left, down to a road. Turn right, (6) and walk on to Dunstall Common, carrying on until you reach what looks like a ruined

HISTORIC BOOK PRESENTED TO LIBRARY Tewkesbury Historical Society has presented a copy of its publication ‘Noble Band of Heroes’ to Tewkesbury Library. The book is a history of all those from Tewkesbury who lost their lives because of the First World War. It comprises not only those whose names are commemorated on memorials, but also those who, for whatever

reason, were omitted. Copies are still available of the Historical Society’s third ‘Then and Now’ book, based on the popular articles published in Tewkesbury Direct. Proceeds from sales go to the charity Combat Stress. Both publications are available from Alison’s Bookshop or can be ordered from the website www.ths.freeuk.com

This is an unusual story based in the mid 1970s and extending through to 1985, a first novel which was awarded the Desmond Elliott Prize for 2015. The two main characters are father, James and his daughter, Peggy, who he calls Punzel. Starting in London where they live with wife Ute, who as a concert pianist is often away on tour. The threat of the Cold War and the end of their world as they know it is a theme that smothers their household. James creates his own well-stocked shelter while friends invade their privacy for meetings planning their unknown future. The story moves dramatically to Germany to an isolated hut, 'die hutte', in a clearing in the forest. Telling Peggy the rest of the world has ended, James takes her off to this remote location which alas is not what he had been told it was, being nothing more than a ramshackle shed in need of repair. The book covers their years in die hutte, their first winter where their stores are insufficient for the

harsh white world that freezes around them. But they survive and over the years while Peggy matures, James begins to lose his focus on reality and life. Within the story we know that Peggy returns to live with Ute and her halfbrother, the time periods moving seamlessly between London mid-70s to 'Die Hutte' and London 1985. In between we see how father and daughter live, survive and in Peggy's case, meets the strange woodsman, Reuben, who enlightens her life as and when he appears. Theirs is a very lonely existence and pressures impose on their relationship. How their story evolves can best be discovered by reading this interesting and unusual first novel. Selected by: Ian B. THEN (right) may well have been about 1919 with a newly returned soldier – in uniform with a medal pinned to his belt. The glorious blossom suggests that it was taken in spring. As the photograph is a treasure of the Howells family who gave me it, we can assume the man is working in Howell’s two-acre nursery garden. Thomas Howell was the family head who sired 7 sons and 3 daughters before he died in 1915. Already the sons had scattered, because there was insufficient employment in the garden. Significantly 3 emigrated to Canada in 1913 – part of an emigration flood to the Dominions. The seventh, Clarence, was conscripted and died in the first Iraq War in 1917. The widowed mother could not cope and followed yet another daughter, Lilian, to Canada in 1921. Several failed attempts to sell followed, until success for the Howells came in 1922. By 1929 it was on the market again and Cllr. Syd Walkley deplored the failure of the council to buy it. He had his way by 1938, when it was announced that the council was to build houses on the gardens. The Cllr. had his reward when one of the streets was named Walkley Road.

NORTHWAY CHRISTMAS FETE The Christmas Fete at Northway Village Hall organised by the Northway Community Volunteers (NARHA) was welcomed by the Community who came to support the event despite the damp day. AROUND TEWKESBURY by Derek Round Historian Derek Round has sent in some vintage photos.

The first is of Haymaking on the Ham in 1917 and in the back-

ground are the black and white cottages of Mill Bank in St Mary’s Road. Derek’s grandmother, Mabel Florence Price, lived there and is in the picture, fifth from the right (standing). The next photo is a view of the Royal Hop Pole taken in 1907 with four Renault VB Touring

cars taken outside. An advertisement of the time accompanies it. To add to the motoring theme, Derek has sent in a novelty card from 1916 and the writer has warned on the reverse to his daughter not to go on to the road and get knocked down by one like this!

We need a boy and three girls aged between 13 and 16 years. They would ideally be of average or above height, enjoy outdoor activity and able to concentrate. Our junior squad trains very seriously with the result that we frequently win events at regattas all over the country. Rowing is great fun and our junior rowers are a lively and friendly self-motivated group supporting each other on and off the water. Parents are often heavily involved particularly at race time and we provide excellent coaching in a safe environment. To meet with British Rowing ‘Rowsafe’ guidelines junior rowers need to be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing. CHRISTMAS CONFLICT FINAL STRAW FOR MANY, CLAIMS TEWKESBURY LAW EXPERT The festive season is generally a special time for families, but it is not always the case with it often being the watershed for many marriage break ups, say Tewkesbury law experts, DF Legal. Christmas conflict after a bad 2015 will see couples heading to law firms in January to seek a divorce, claims family law expert Wayne Phillips. “Sadly Christmas is a time when problems can come to a head,” he said. “It is the time of the year when an illicit affair becomes harder to cover because of family pressures, and also when couples in rocky relationships reflect on the 12 months gone and some decide they want a new start.” “To add to this, when you consider rows through people being around each other more and financial worries due to the cost of Christmas, it shows why the early part of a New Year is generally the busiest time of year for family lawyers,” he added. Mr Phillips said the tales of difficult holiday periods are often cited when divorce cases get underway. “Couples do their best for the sake of the family to create the best Christmas possible, but this becomes

IT’S ALL ABOUT HEDGEHOGS I know that many of the articles I write on behalf of Vale Wildlife Hospital concern hedgehogs but it is mainly because the hedgehog is the only mammal that we deal with all year round, writes Caroline Gould. Whether spring (the release of any remaining ones that have spent the winter months with us and possibly the first influx of hoglets), summer (many abandoned or orphaned babies as well as others with injuries from garden incidents, road traffic collisions, dog attacks and more), autumn (dozens of late born

juveniles struggling to put enough weight on for hibernation) or winter (always well over 100 hedgehogs to overwinter), the nation’s favourite mammal arrives at our doors just about every day of the year. Hedgehog rehabilitation process. They are still being found out and about, searching for food in preparation for hibernation during the colder weather. If you see a hedgehog in your garden at night and it looks a good healthy size (the recommended minimum weight for hibernation survival is 650gms), well ‘rounded’, lively and eating well (we always advise providing a supply of cat or dog food each evening for visiting hogs), there is probably nothing to worry about. But if you see a hedgehog out during the day this is probably cause for concern. Going back thirty or forty years I remember our four seasons being much more defined than they are today. Spring was quite wet, the summer was long and warm, autumn was windy and foggy and the winter consisted of prolonged periods of cold, frosty, sometimes snowy weather. Now all the seasons seem to roll into one and although we do see some extremes in the

weather such as flooding which is likely to become more common, we don’t see the temperature variations that used to mark each season. Our changing seasons affect the wildlife too.

Review your security this New Year I have been submitting these articles for almost three years and hopefully the information has stopped some of you from being victims of crime, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. There is, however, nothing worse than reviewing our daily crime statistics and seeing that there have been overnight dwelling burglaries. More often than not these crimes could have been avoided by some very simple measures. Almost all our recent dwelling burglaries have had the same point of entry this being patio doors at the rear of the premises , often owners leave the keys in these locks this makes the premises vulnerable and provides an easy exit route should the home owner return to the front door. Another worrying trend is that some of the victims have been elderly, please as well as checking your own home security don’t forget relatives or neigh-

bours who may be especially vulnerable. I have printed the tips below in a previous article but they are still relevant, if you make one resolution this New Year please make your home more secure. Top tips to keep your home secure: •Keep your doors and windows locked even when you’re in – burglars will try doors to find one that is unlocked. • Make your home look lived in – use timer switches or leave your television on when you’re not home. • Always remember to switch on your burglar alarm if you have one • Keep valuables out of view – burglars will

High value goods are costly to replace if stolen, and items such as phones and cameras often hold information with sentimental value such as photos, which cannot be replaced. • Take in your refuse bin promptly once it has been emptied. • Don’t leave garden tools or ladders outside, as they can be used by burglars to enter your property. • Dispose of packaging for expensive items properly; don’t advertise what is in your house. • Register your property on www.immobilise.co m so that if it is stolen and recovered by the Police it can then be returned to you. Town Colts and Pumas kitted out in style Tewkesbury Town Colts and Pumas football teams now have smart new kit thanks to the generosity of several local businesses. Both teams have entered into the Evesham Ambassador league, playing a series of matches throughout the season along with friendly games arranged by their coaches. Fixtures take place on Saturday mornings and teams also train on a Thursday night at Tewkesbury School’s allweather pitch. Twyning Garage have provided the Colts with their strip, while estate agents Engal Castle have donated the players’ jackets, bibs, footballs, ball bags and cones. The Pumas’ strip and footballs have been sponsored by CSJ Enterprises (Bishop’s Cleeve) with jackets supplied by Skippy Peanut Butter. Both of the teams have come out of the Tewkesbury Town Colts Academy, which children attend up to the age of seven. As I lifted an orange from the fruit bowl over Christmas a story that I was told years ago came into my mind. I share it with you together with my best wishes for the New Year, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. I hope that it will help you make sure that the new year is good for you and for all around you. So, lets start off with a sort of party game. I want you to pretend you are an orange. Why ?Just read this: “If I were to squeeze an orange as hard as I could, what would come out?”the man asked. He looked at me like I was a little crazy and said, “Juice, of course.” “Do you think apple juice could come out of it?” “No!” he laughed. “What about grapefruit juice?” “No! What would come out of it?” “Orange juice, of

course.” “Why?” (He may have been getting a little exasperated with the man at this point.) "Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside. Orange juice. Not apple juice. Not grapefruit juice. Not milk!” I nodded.He was starting to get annoyed. Time I explained what I meant. “Just imagine that this orange isn’t an orange at all, but it’s you. Someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, says something you don’t like, offends you. “And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear. Why?

All trees will be turned into compost - so you do need to remove all of its decorations, tinsel, lights etc before taking them to be recycled. When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love and positive feelings and reactions, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside. Once you take away all those negative things you don’t want in your life and replace them with the positive, you’ll find yourself living a far happier, effective, positive life. As 2015 drew to a close, heavy rain caused widespread disruption to transport and serious flooding in many parts of England. Many people in the Tewkesbury area reflected upon the events of July 2007 - when the town was inundated and counted themselves luckier on this occasion.
