Some say you never win on the gee-gees, but two investors from a stud near Tewkesbury have defied the odds by netting a huge return on their investment. Chris Dudfield, of Natton and Alex Storrer, from Toddington, paid 2000 guineas for a mare at the Tattersall’s Breeding Stock Sales in December 2012. Its colt has just sold for 37,000 guineas two years on! The mare, Manbaa, is jointly owned by Chris and Alex, whose business is Natton House Thoroughbreds. Manbaa’s first foal - a colt - was snapped up by keen eyed buyers at the foal sale just before Christmas. TEWKESBURY SWIMMING CLUB COMPETE AGAINST REGION'S BEST www.tewkesburydirect.co.uk
Tewkesbury Swimming Club (TSC) have been competing in the Arena League, a nationwide competition for young swimmers, with races organised regionally. TSC swam in the Midlands grouping from October to December, which involved travelling to pools such as Leamington Spa and Droitwich. The swim squad was a combination of highly promising youngsters, accomplished development swimmers and extremely talented seniors. True to Tewkesbury’s reputation for excellent team spirit, each and every swimmer cheered their team mates throughout the races. There were some exciting, close-fought races with lots of fast swimming. The experience of performing against some of the strongest swimmers in their age groups has served the club’s swimmers well. Their team spirit is now even more galvanised, and they are well aware of the training that lies ahead in order for their personal bests to improve. TSC offers fun, fit-
ness, new friends and competitive swimming for children aged seven to eighteen. Training takes place in the pools at Cascades in the centre of town and at Tewkesbury School in Ashchurch Road. Sessions consist of a mixture of technique, stamina and fun. A spokesperson for TSC said: “Swimming improves performance at other sports because it aids stamina, strength, flexibility and co-ordination. “Because healthy children are said to be better learners, swimming may well improve a child’s academic performance. “Swimming is a unique sport – even if you don’t like other sports, swimming could be ideal for you. Mitton children shine once more Mitton Manor Pre-School excelled once again by holding their annual pre-school Christmas concert at the Watson Hall, Tewkesbury on Friday 12th December. The production 'One Starry Night' gave the all of children (who are aged between 21/2 to 4 years) the chance to make their ‘shining performances’ on the stage in front of their families, who watched with pride. FOODBANK BENEFITS FROM SHOPPERS’ GENEROSITY Volunteers at Tewkesbury Foodbank topped up food supplies during a food collection at the Tesco store at Bishops Walk. A total of 600 Kilos of non-perishable food was donated by generous shoppers during the two day collection at the end of 2014 Foodbank volunteers also packed up Christmas food hampers for local people and families in need. The target was to distribute between 100 and 150 hampers. This has been made possible fol-
lowing the success of the food collection and the surplus food donated by local schools and churches through Harvest Festival celebrations. Foodbank spokesperson Gordon Sandford
says “We have been blessed by the goodwill and generosity of you, the local people as well as local churches, schools and businesses who donate food and support us. “This enables us to provide around 60 adults and children each

Behind the unassuming wooden bay window with its neat book display, volunteers beaver away supporting all kinds of local good causes through various fundraising activities. In 2014 the Bookworm’s army of volunteers has raised thousands of pounds allowing generous donations to be shared out in the community including
£3,000 to Cancer Research; £2,000 to Tewkesbury Hospital and £500 towards the town’s Christmas lights display. The latest community group to benefit is Tewkesbury in Bloom
who are “over the moon”after receiving a cheque for £1,000. It will go a long way towards supporting the town’s entry in the national Britain in Bloom competition this year.

Did Santa get stuck down your chimney? With Christmas now all over for another year and Santa back in his home in Lapland, chimneys should be free to welcome the warming glow of the fire during the winter months, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Although we have never had a call to rescue Santa from a chimney, we do receive many calls to birds that have got themselves stuck. These days many fireplaces are either boarded up or they have an electric or gas fire standing in front of them, but with the chimneys still open to the elements there is still the risk that a bird will somehow end up inside it. We have on occasions had to deal with serious burns when an open fire has been alight and a bird has come down the chimney into it, but a majority of the calls we get are to rescue one that is trapped behind a board or a gas fire. Where a gas appliance is involved, the householder has to call out a qualified engineer to move the fire before we can do anything for the poor bird. Our most recent chimney rescue involved a starling that didn’t get stuck, but came straight out into the homeowner’s front room. In these cases we usually ask the person to open as many windows as possible and leave the bird to find its own way out. Unfortunately this lady had a phobia of birds and couldn’t go into the room while the bird was there, so one of our Care Assistants went out to catch the starling
Caroline Gould accepts her award from Bill Oddie and release it outside. Another rescue was to a tawny owl that had come down a chimney into an empty house. Builders had been working in the house but hadn’t been there for several days and, judging by the mess inside the house, shredded net curtains and soot all over the place, the unfortunate owl had been trapped for a long time. After a good bath and a few days with plenty of food, the owl was fit enough to be released back into the same area,
with advice to the householder to get the
chimney capped to prevent this happening again! A simple piece of mesh over the top of the chimney can prevent these incidents, saving a lot of stress to the birds involved and often expense for the resident. A quick update to my last article – in November, ten of us had an amazing night at the Daily Mirror / RSPCA Animal Hero Awards at the Grosvenor Park Hotel in London where I was amazed to be chosen as the winner of the Animal Enthusiast of the Year Award. It was a massive honour to be presented with the award by Bill Oddie and to meet so many celebrities such as Brian May, Paul O’Grady and Deborah Meaden. BECKFORD’S HIDDEN GEM Beckford Nature Reserve is one of the hidden gems of Bredon Hill, writes Jack B. Walker. Tucked away near the centre of the village, the site is well-managed by a team of volunteers and is run as a charitable organisation. This month’s walk, although short, offers the opportunity to observe a plethora of wildlife - and you may need to allow more time than you think! Park your vehicle in the car park to the rear of the village hall. Leave the car park, cross the road and turn left along the lane (1). Take care as you walk for the first five-ten minutes as there is no footway and traffic is quite busy at times. You will pass a cottage on the opposite side of the road, then as the road bends sharply to the left, look for a lane on the right (SP: Bredon Hill). (2). Go along this lane towards some farm buildings. After passing a sunken barn on the right, the lane enters a farm yard. Ignore the turning to the left (which ascends Bredon Hill) and walk ahead between the barns (3). At the end of the yard, bear right
down the lane and pass Court Farm house on your right (4). This was formerly the home of the celebrated author of children’s books, Ursula Moray-Williams. Walk on down the lane until you reach the edge of a copse. Go up the steps on the left (5) in the gap between two fence posts to enter Beckford Nature Reserve. Follow the path down the timber steps to the lake side. At the bottom, turn left and carry on around the lake. (6). A short distance further on, you will come to a hide on your right. This affords an excellent view over the water: resident birds include mallard, coot, moorhead, tufted duck and dabchicks (little grebe) you may hear the distinctive call of the latter. Canada geese, swans and greylags are also seasonal visitors. For many years the
Canada Geese at Beckford Nature Reserve reserve was used as a sand and gravel quarry. Note the bank on the left just past the hide, which has been colonised by more seasonal visitors sand martins - which are a delight to behold in spring. Rabbits have taken over some of the burrows! Follow the path from the hide towards the gate, and bear right up a slope to carry on around the lake. (7). (To visit Beckford Silk, carry on through the gate, cross the road, and follow the signs opposite.) Carrying on, you will emerge through the trees into a small orchard.
(8). Bear right and go through the gate at the end, keeping the lake to your right. Pass another hide (right) and a house (on the left), until you come to a kissing gate. (9). Go through the gate and turn left. Follow the lane past another pond behind a stone wall. Look for a narrow path on the left (X) and take this to reach the churchyard. Follow the path past the church (which is well worth a visit) and go through the lychgate. Turn right (Y) and follow the road to the village cross, then bear right to return to the village hall.

SUPERHERO’S FOR CHARITY Amy Bastin Dance held an action packed morning of activities on Sunday 23rd November at Perform fitness in conjunction with Perform Fitness themselves, Body to Soul, Ell Hair Salon and many other local businesses all in aid of charity, raising a total of £677.80. Children aged 2 upwards got involved in a fun filled superhero themed workshop full of games, dancing and craft. There was lots for adults too; a pyjama themed 2 hour spin, mini treatments, mini bake off and plenty of stalls to browse. The event was in aid of two fantastic charities; Children in Need and the James Hopkins trust. Children in Need work nationally to make a difference to the lives of Children throughout the UK. While the James Hopkins trust is a local Gloucestershire Charity which helps to support life threatened, life limited and severely disabled children and their families. We are pleased to say that by holding this event we have not only raised awareness but much needed funds for both of these charities. Amy Bastin Dance would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this fantastic event and we look forward to holding many more successful charity events in the future.

On Friday 12th December, representatives of Tewkesbury in Bloom, Tewkesbury Chamber of Commerce, the Christmas Lights Committee and the Town Museum joined Tewkesbury Town Councillors in celebrating National Christmas Jumper Day organised by Save the Children. Councillor John Badham who is also chairman of Tewkesbury in Bloom said, "This was a wonderful opportunity for organisations who do so much to make our own town a great place in which to live, to support a cause that helps children in trouble spots throughout the world". Chairman of the Tewkesbury Branch of Save the Children, Sue Wickstead said, "We have had one of our most successful years of fundraising in Tewkesbury and celebrating National Christmas Jumper Day with these other voluntary groups from the town was a fitting end to the year. We all hope that 2015 will be another great year for Tewkesbury". During 2014 the fund raising activities of the local Save the Children Group have contributed over £10500 not only in response to internation-

On Sunday 7th December Tewkesbury School held its first Christmas Fayre. Over 20 local businesses came along to sell a wonderful variety of Christmas gifts for all the family. Children delighted in visiting Santa and his elf helper in the Grotto and received gifts and chocolate. Many Tewkesbury School students gave up

The traffic-free post card published here dates from around 1900, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. The Black Bear changes little and Mythe Row, now homes, has maintained its medieval aspect. Northend House, however, suffered terribly in that fire and is no longer the home of wealthy wine merchants, as it once was. By 1924 the elm tree at the cross-roads was declared “rotten at the root” and it has since been replaced with a London Plane tree. Then a newspaper article reported that “Many of our older readers remember when the stocks for the punishment of malefactors were in existence at the foot of the tree”. Recent damage to community assets wonders if historic justice might have been more effective! What has happened to these stocks? They have disappeared. They were witnessed by the later Brian Linnell when, as a boy, he learned stamp collecting from Bertie Gray, the occupier of that impressive house. Years later, when collecting artefacts for the Town’s Museum, he noted that slips of paper remained inscribed ‘Removed by B.C. Gray’. Clearly Gray, then a renowned local historian, had removed many artefacts. Linnell recalled that “one pensioner recalled that the stocks had been taken to Mr. Gray's cellar”. That is now the cellar of the Black Bear but a recent licensee claimed that it has been blocked up. Are the stocks still entombed there and may we have them back? John Dixon

MEMORIES FROM TEWKESBURY’S FORMER DAIRY FARMS Director of local family firm Cotteswold Dairies, Roger Workman, has been collecting milk related memorabilia for about thirty years. The collection includes a fine collection of delivery vehicles that span the last century, churns, bottle washers, filling machines and of course hundreds of milk bottles. Here is a glimpse of his collection, but the bottles are of special interest as many are local coming from long gone dairies, they give us an insight into the hive of activity which brought the daily pint to the doors in days gone by. Of special interest, Roger has two bottles from the Royal Dairy at Windsor. Prince Albert built the dairy for Queen Victoria. As there was no refrigeration in those days, the dairy faced
north and cold water fountains were installed that acted as natural air cooling devices. The dairy was started by Harry Workman in 1932 on Cotteswold Road near the centre of Tewkesbury. Harry still has a watchful eye over the business that now serves vast areas of England and Wales.

ALL IN A SPIN FOR MAGGIE’S CENTRES On Sunday 16th November, 15 dancers from Twisted Chrome, the Tewkesbury based pole dance fitness studio, raised £700 in their first public showcase to support Maggie’s Centres. The event was held at the Frog and Fiddle pub in Cheltenham and featured dancers, ages 20 – 40, performing routines lasting around three
minutes. More than 105 people attended to support the event and all proceeds went to Maggie’s Centres Cheltenham branch,
which is a charity that provides respite care, emotional help and support for those living with cancer and their families.

• The door should be fitted with a five lever mortise deadlock. • Ensure that the frame is strong and will support the door, hinges and lock. • Make sure the door is suitable for external use and is a minimum of 45mm thick. • Letterboxes should have an internal cover plate. • For additional safety and security fit a spy hole and door chain. • Do not leave house keys in or near the door as they can get removed through the letterbox.
Windows Windows are often used as either an entry or exit route for burglars. Properties with windows left open or unsecured locks are a target for the opportunist burglar. • Remember to close and lock all your windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes. • Windows on the ground floor and in accessible areas should be made of toughened glass or doubled glazed. • Make sure windows are fitted with a good lock appropriate for the window type. • Avoid leaving valuables, house or car keys near windows.
Bogus callers Not all burglars break into homes - some will try to trick or con their way in. They are known as bogus callers and will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as the Utility
Companies Gas, Electricity and Water - or the Council. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs. Bogus callers succeed because they sound believable, so don't be fooled. Make sure in your own mind that they are whom they claim to be by following these simple steps: • Think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognize them. • Ask callers for proof of identity. Genuine tradesmen should carry an identification card with their photograph on. Check this carefully. If you are unsure, telephone the company the caller claims to represent. • The Utilities now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one of these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity. • Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere which may encourage you to leave your house - they may have an accomplice awaiting this distraction. • If you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don't let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return or ask the caller to contact this person.

Remember that the New Year is, as it opens, an unspoiled page in your own personal book of Time. Things that you sought and didn't find in the past may well be waiting for you in 2015. All the good you tried to do and didn't achieve may actually be achieved at last if you strive forward positively. All that you dreamed of but for some reason didn't dare to do. All you hoped but did not manage. All these things may be waiting for you in 2015. Your New Year is full of New Opportunity.
