Plans for new Tewkesbury leisure centre step up a gear www.tewkesburydirect.co.uk

Plans for a new leisure centre for Tewkesbury Borough have stepped up a gear following a decision by councillors to commit the required funding for the project. Members of Tewkesbury Borough Council have agreed to commit a significant capital investment to the project, which will cover the preparation of the new site, the building of a new centre and the demolition of the current Cascades facility. The council and the Swimming Bath Trust, which own and manage the current leisure centre building, have agreed that building a new leisure centre would be the most cost effective option because refurbishment costs to bring the current Cascades Leisure Centre up to a modern standard have been estimated to be at least £3.8 million. It is also predicted that the existing facility, which was built more than 40 years ago, will continue to cost more to maintain and run. The new centre is proposed to include a 25m main pool and 20m learner swimming pool, which means there will

SITE OF STATION IS COMMEMORATED Tewkesbury’s Civic, Historical and Railway Societies have joined forces to commemorate the town’s very first railway station, which was situated on the High Street. Crowds gathered for the unveiling ceremony last month, which was performed by Ian Boskett (Railway Society) and John Dixon (Tewkesbury Historical Society). “Perhaps miraculously the developers left one vertical limestone column when the site was redeveloped, said John Dixon. “The Plaque recalls a station built in 1839, made redundant in 1864 and demolished, without ceremony, in 1929.”

The plaque, fixed to the surviving pillar, is situated between the Tewkesbury Cookshop and Domino’s Pizza.

A short history of the station has been published, and is available from either Alison’s Bookshop or Tewkesbury Cookshop. The document contains some rare and interesting old photos (like the one below) showing a train breaking the law by exiting on to the High Street!

There is also information on the history of the station site and its environs since its closure; from its use as a temporary home for the British Legion to demolition, and what subsequently occupied the site. A fascinating read.

His brief was to develop the retail arm of the business in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Gloucester and the surrounding counties. This included the building of a new showroom - which will open to the public this month. “It will be one of the largest double glazing showrooms in the area -

TIMETABLE CHANGES FOR ASHCHURCH A new timetable for Ashchurch for Tewkesbury Railway Station came into force last month. Although there were no signification alterations to the services, some changes have been made. Following a request from the Ashchurch, Tewkesbury and District Rail Promotion Group, Cross Country Trains have made the following alteration to its services which call at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. Mondays to On Saturdays the 17.45 Cardiff to Nottingham CrossCountry service will now call additionally at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury at 19.05. On Mondays to Fridays the 18.45 Cardiff to Nottingham service ceases to call at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. This was the 20.05 departure to Nottingham via Birmingham New Street. This alteration gives a much needed additional early evening journey opportunity to Ashchurch for Tewkesbury from Bristol, leaving Bristol Temple Meads at 18.00, and Bristol at 18.09, Parkway (changing at Cheltenham Spa to arrive at

BOYS PEDAL HARD FOR CHARITY Members of Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade got in the saddle to raise money for the locally-based military charity Army of Angels. The event, held in the foyer of Morrisons’ supermarket, coincided with the 130th anniversary of the brigade’s foundation. Boys’ Brigade staff and members of the Company Section took turns to ride a static bike on a 130 mile journey -

equivalent to riding from Tewkesbury to Torquay, Devon! Boys Tewkesbury Brigade has an ongoing commitment to support local charities, and also held a fund-raising Christmas Fair at its headquarters in Canterbury Leys.

BELIEVE YOUR MINCE PIES! A delighted Kathy Stagg, from the Friends of Southend Farm, tells us £612.70 was raised in aid of Cancer Research UK at last month’s Mince Pie Day. Illuminating lecture series begins A new series of Kemerton Lectures begins on Thursday 23rd January, at 7.30pm in the village’s Victoria Hall. ‘An Introduction to English Medieval manuscripts’ will be a ten week course running on Thursday nights. It is from the church at Elmley Castle that this month’s walk begins. Go through the gate and walk to the left of the church (1) and join the path which passes a duck pond on the right. Walk between two paddocks and into a field, then bear right (2), following the boundary until you reach a stile. Cross it (3) and follow the direction of the waymarkers diagonally across the field, passing the ‘lightning tree’ on your right.

You are now in the ancient deer park. Today some 500 fallow deer roam Bredon Hill: reputthey are all edly descended from a dozen or so who escaped from here in the thirteenth century. The castle ramparts are above you to the right (see below.)

Go over a footbridge and stile, turn right and go through a metal gate on to a bridleway (4) which can be both muddy and slippy. Follow this uphill route for some distance, using the arrows to direct you to the ridge just below the summit of Bredon Hill, via a wood. Emerge from the wood on to a path and bear right (5). When you reach a gateway on the right (6) go through it, back into the wood, and down until you reach the cross tracks (7). Bear right and follow the trail back down the hill, until you reach a lane. This eventually becomes a tarmac road (Hill Lane) which will lead you back into the village, passing several attractive thatched cottages. Near the bottom, look for a gate into a field (8) which cuts the corner off. Cross the field and rejoin the lane, turn right back to the village.

Generosity of shoppers helps to fill Tewkesbury Foodbank Volunteers at Tewkesbury Food bank wish to thank the generous folk who donated food during a three day food collection at Tesco’s metro store in Tewkesbury, writes Shelby Powell. The food collection in November was part of a national campaign to help families in food crisis. A total of 32,000 trolley-loads of food were donated to food banks across the country equating to 4.3 million individual meals. In Tewkesbury almost 630 kg of non-perishable foodstuffs including tins and cans, coffee and biscuits were donated at the Bishops Walk store.

THE DAY WHEN ‘SMALL BUSINESS’ BECAME BIG NEWS… Britain’s first ever ‘Small Business Saturday’ took place in the runup to Christmas and Tewkesbury was fully involved in this one-day celebration of the importance of small businesses to the economy. The idea of the day – to put small businesses at the heart of people’s thinking as they did their Christmas shopping – came from America and its debut appearance in the UK has already been hailed as a great success. In this area, many local retailers supported the day and Tewkesbury’s branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) worked with both Tewkesbury Borough Council and MP Laurence Robertson to try and use the occasion to help remind people of the vital contribution made by small firms to the local community. Mr Robertson and the Deputy Chief Executive of Tewkesbury Borough Council Rachel North joined members of the FSB to visit a number of the town’s high street shops over the ‘Small Business Saturday’ weekend to celebrate the day and also to hear some of their concerns about the issues facing small businesses at the moment.

Often seen in Worcester it is believed that Keith swam up the river chasing Salmon but local angler Sean Gould believes that there are a number of Seals in the river as photographs have been taken at Worcester, Pershore and Tewkesbury. Sean claims that the Seals markings on the photos vary making it more likely there are a group of Seals in the river. Some anglers believe Keith and maybe his pals are damaging fish stocks and are keen to see the Seal(s) return downstream to the sea.

SUCCESSFUL SQUASHATHON AT TEWKESBURY PARK HOTEL Squash was played continuously for twelve hours from 8am until 8pm by fun day youngsters and older team players. An exhibition match to round off the squash between world number 90 player, Nathan Lake against Matt Bedwell in a very tight but gripping match. Some old players joined forces with youngsters in fun double matches and a raffle was held to round off the evening with £130 being raised to add to club funds. LAPTOPS & LIQUID SPILLAGE advice from Complex Systems The most important advice we can give is don’t leave a drink next to your laptop, but if you do spill liquid on your laptop follow these tips. 1. If your laptop is plugged into the power, turn it off at the mains and unplug it from the laptop. 2. Power down the laptop immediately by holding the power button until the laptop turns off - don’t worry about closing programs and shutting down properly - speed is of the essence to avoid a short circuit. 3. Remove the battery - many people forget to do this! 4. Try to drain as much liquid out of the laptop as possible and mop up what you can. 5. Put your laptop into an upside “V” shape. We recommend that you put the laptop on a towel. 6. After about an hour - if you can, pack and seal the laptop in a large polythene bag still in the upside down “V” shape and include between the “V” shape a couple of large handfuls of uncooked rice in an open dish or container to absorb the moisture. If you have the cereal Rice Crispies these will work well too in place of the uncooked rice!

7. Do NOT be tempted to use a hair dryer to try and dry the laptop out. You will likely cause more damage. 8. Warners’ Garage

The unilateral decision by the Borough Council Executive, to sell off what I know as Warner’s Car Park for “redevelopment,” has been met with some consternation – and it has provoked some useful photographs being displayed on ‘Facebook’, writes John Dixon The photo of the garage is one for those who do not use the social networking site: it is the wall which has excited as much interest as the busses! Nick Warner himself remind us that the company relocated to the trading estate in 1987. Was there life before Warners? The enhanced aerial photograph from 1928 reminds us that it was Moore’s Sheep Market until 1949, when the Town Council gave its “approval in principle to Warner’s erecting a garage on the ‘Old Cattle Market’ site”. In the foreground are the fascinating 2-up-1-down houses of Spring Gardens. Next to the market, on the other side of Station Street, is the Railway Inn – the railway itself was hidden behind the houses. Nearer the corner was a grocer’s shop, the owner of which in 1901 died dramatically from an overdose of laudanum (opium - then used as a medicinal drug). Does anyone remember the sheep market and have a photograph of it? The History of Tewkesbury’s Livestock Markets can be read in THS John Dixon Bulletin 18 (2009).

Demolition work is currently underway at the former Tewkesbury Hospital in Barton Road. The buildings are being razed to the ground now that the brand new Community Hospital has been opened. The foundation stone, laid by the Duchess of Athlone in 1934 is going to be preserved and there is a place allocated for it in the new hospital grounds. There is also a proposal that the capital from the doorway might also be spared; although this is to still to be confirmed.

The units were grateful to Eric Thresher of Estuary Training for his instruction in both subjects and all who particisuccessfully pated achieved their certificates. well and we are very grateful that unit members from both units had the opportunity to study an actual marine diesel engine at close quarters. This raises awareness of the main systems of a diesel engine and they were advised on simple measures to prevent a mechanical breakdown and how defects could be rectified. Those members attending the VHF course also benefited from the instructor's considerable knowledge and experience and one of the most important aspects they practised was how to correctly

RELICS FROM THE PAST Clues to the past are all around, but it is good to have a local historian on hand to give background to the things we see. This old sign (pictured) behind the shops in Northway’s Lee Road indicates the area was control of under Cheltenham Rural District Council. Alan Snarey has been

able to provide some background to the sign. The garages and maisonettes were built in 1954/55 and the Clerk, Mr Acocks was appointed in 1935, so it is a fair guess that the sign is nearly sixty years old. More relics of a bygone age can be seen on the old newsagents shop on the corner of

Mill Street and Church Street opposite the Bell Hotel. The painted panel reveals a senior service cigarette sign and the glass plaque on the door promotes Brookebond Tea. Tewkesbury High Street had a poor safety record? I know, I didn’t know either and I’ve only been here 40 years. I just must have had my head buried in the sand, because I can’t remember anything nasty. Odd bumps and shunts happen in any busy street but apparently, our High Street had been one of the top 50 accident black spots in Gloucestershire for the past 10 years. Amazed? – I was; and we needed more pavement space for pedestrians and mobility scooters. What for?? I mean, when did you last see a mobility scooter traffic jam on our pavements? And it was too busy for comfort. Well, I used to be in and out of the town all the time, but I’d never seen the pavements bustling with ‘busy-ness’ You want to see busy? Go and stand at the bottom end of Tottenham Court Road on a Saturday, where if you died, you wouldn’t have enough room to fall over – THAT’S BUSY! Getting the New Year off to a good start Well now that Christmas is over why not have a review of your home security, it doesn't need to cost a fortune and there may even be additional benefits such as cheaper insurance premiums, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. I have looked at some recent crime trends and a feature of several dwelling burglaries have been that the point of entry has been sliding patio doors or french windows. If you have either of these points of entry they are an area of your home that can be vulnerable, depending on the type of door you have there are numerous products which can help from extra locks to sliding deadlock bolts and devices which lock the two handles together. In addition I have visited homes where the keys to these windows have been left in the locks this provides an easy escape route for any thief should they gain access to your home by a small window it also makes the removal of large items of property very easy. Remove the keys and take them upstairs at night but keep them to hand just in case of an emergency. Following on from the above when your home contents insurance is up for renewal please ensure that your cover is adequate for your needs and that any specific

items are individually listed such as any expensive jewellery or cameras. If you own any valuable pedal cycles make sure that they are included whether at home or while you are out and about. Make sure that your cycle is securely locked and chained when it is left unattended. You can purchase a special pen to mark your cycle or any other property with your post code or alternatively your local Police Community Support Officers can mark any cycles free of charge. Only just this morning there has been a report of a device placed on two cash machines at a large local supermarket. These devices can vary from the very sophisticated to relatively simple.

The golden rule is if you suspect that something doesn't look right then don’t put your card into the machine. Make sure that you inform the store or bank immediately and either contact the police yourself or get the staff to do so. When using the ATM be very wary of anyone loitering around the machine and always shield your pin. If anyone approaches you whilst at the machine do not be distracted and if they persist abort the transaction and return later or try a different machine. One last point there have been more e-mail scams reported to us these have had various guises but the most common involves the message saying that you have won a cash prize and you have to pay as sum of money up front to unlock the funds another requests payment to be made to get rid of a virus. In short if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is do not part with any of your money or supply any details from your cards even if they say

they represent your bank as they have the information already. Pass the details of

these scams to the police and tell your friends and family to prevent them from being victims.

Tigers Tewkesbury under tens’ squad travelled to Newent to meet a team they’d not come across before, without three influential players. The Tigers played four games in total, putting out a strong team in the first hoping to soften Newent up for the next set of players. The Tigers showed how determined they were to succeed and came away with a 35pts to nil victory. Tewkesbury put out a new team for the second bout, but early mistakes and some sloppy tackling gave Newent the upper hand: the result was a 25-0 reverse. For the third short Tewkesbury game Tigers redressed the balance and came out 15-5 winners, although Newent moved the ball around well. For the fourth and final game the Tigers put out yet another set of players, but a competitive Newent outfit scored three tries to run out 15-0 winners. The badger that was put on the back seat of a car. On his way to us, the driver rang us from his mobile to let us know he was on his way. Suddenly, all we heard was ‘Oh no - it’s awake!!!’ The driver had looked in his rear view mirror, only to see the badger, no longer unconscious on the back seat. Luckily he managed to get to the nearest vet and they transferred the badger into a cage before bringing it the rest of the way. The latest example was that of quite a large fallow deer, weighing 40+ kgs which we collected from the finder’s kitchen where it was sitting quietly on the floor. It was suffering from concussion due to a head trauma and wasn’t

with it at all but had it started to recover, it could have caused untold damage and potentially serious injuries to the householders. So, the advice is to ring for advice and help and not to touch injured large animals, no matter how harmless they look. Here we are as we open the door on a New Year, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. I wish you all health and happiness and success for 2014. Last year was a year of mixed fortunes for us as individuals as well as a country. At times , no doubt, you have wondered " what is the point?" Most of us will have gone through difficult times and come out the other end worn but wiser. So how do we get the best out of this New Year? Here are some thoughts: Most of us have got through the bad times and have found a new happiness, a new success , a new freedom which we not have foreseen when in the middle of all the turmoil. What has happened in the past has brought you to the point in life where you find yourself now. What you need to remember is that no matter what has happened in that past it can have no control over where you can go from here. I encourage people with whom I deal to bring from the past all the good things and to have the strength and courage to leave the negative elements behind. I am saying close the door on the past. Learn the lessons that it may have taught you but stop constantly resurrecting the past problems because all you do is keep them alive and it is that which prevents you from moving forwards.

The past does not create your future. It is you who does that and you do it through making choices. So it is your choices that create the basic substance of your future. OK things may not have been good in the past. You can agonise over them daily and rue the mistakes you may have made BUT you cant change the fact that they happened. Now is the time to move forward and allow yourself to move positively beyond them. The past can be like an anchor chained to your leg. You are its prisoner IF you allow it to be so. When you let go you give yourself the chance to move forwards wherever you choose. Circumstances can change. Situations can change. People can change and that means SO CAN YOU. Each moment gives you the chance to shake off the past and take on board a new purpose and begin to create a new and positive future. You have the good fortune to be living. You have the good fortune to have another chance. See the bright future that can be yours and you will make it so much easier to achieve. Stand back and look at your life, your strengths, your potential. Start to make plans - POSITIVE plans. See it. Believe it. Achieve it!! David Slater

After his parents arrest, Dell is taken in by his Mother's friend to live with her brother, Arthur Remlinger in Saskatchewan, crossing the border into Canada unobserved. Life is hard for Dell, alone and with no family and Arthur takes little notice or care of him. Arthur is a man with a past and after the arrival of a couple of yanks from Detroit, violence ensues. Dell is forced to witness murder and to help dispose of the bodies before he is spirited away to safety and an eventual secure life in Winnipeg. Harrison’s Clive award was presented by Bob Sykes, Editor in Chief of MAI magazine at a recent ceremony held in Burton on Trent “I am overwhelmed at being presented with this award. There are only a very few Lifetime awards Achievement ever given out and only to Instructors who have given many years to the Martial Arts,” said Clive. “Martial Arts have been a major part of my life for over 40 years and in that time I have taught literally hundreds of students. “As I was the first Taekwondo Instructor in Gloucestershire, most of the local Instructors have either been taught by myself or I have taught their Instructors. Since opening his first club in 1982, Clive has taught over 450 students to Black belt and above and coached numerous World, European and Champions National including the county’s own Mark Weir.
