The truckstop is being built by local haulier William Gilder, who operates from a nearby base at Gretton. Mr Gilder, who is a specialist agricultural and waste haulier, said that he expects the work to be completed within the next six months. When completed, it will include fuel facilities and a new restaurant, employing up to ten people. Tewkesbury Borough Council supported the development because they recognised the need for a safe place for truck drivers to rest while in the area. CHEERS! BEER FESTIVAL IS TWENTY ONE Tewkesbury’s annual Winter Ales Festival comes of age at the end of this month, when it will be celebrating its twenty first year. Organised by the local branch of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA), there will be three days of festivities from Friday 31st January until Sunday 2nd February. HEDGEHOGS IN TROUBLE
Hedgehogs make up almost one quarter of the total wildlife casualties we deal with each year and this year more than ever have been admitted (over 1,100), writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Because of the work and research done, mainly by our vet Tim, our success rate with hedgehogs has been increasing year on year. The dose rate of drugs used for the treatment of hedgehogs is far higher than for any other species we treat and we publish a medications chart for these dosages which is now used by wildlife centres, hedgehog carers and vets all over the country. Until a couple of months ago it was quite rare for us to lose a hedgehog (apart from the ones that are admitted with untreatable illnesses or injuries). Recently, things have changed, and not for the better. During the spring and autumn months we are used to seeing an increase in the internal parasite burdens in wild animals, and hedgehogs in particular. One parasite that, although recorded in hedgehogs, we had never seen in the 28 year history of Vale Wildlife Hospital, started to appear a couple of months ago in hogs coming in, was thornyheaded worm so when a few of the sicker ones died we were not altogether surprised. We researched the treatment

for these nasties and started treating hedgehogs as they came in. T hen we discovered that they were also coming in with large burdens of fluke, so we had to also give more medications to treat these. Flukes thrive in wet, humid weather so conditions have been perfect recently. Sheep farmers across the country are
also reporting major problems in their animals due to fluke. Internal parasite numbers always rise in the autumn and the very wet year we have had this year has made matters even worse. We had to start every new hedgehog on a cocktail of drugs as soon as they were admitted to ensure their survival. Although
they are one of the smaller mammals that we treat at Vale, they are the most probably expensive because of the volume of treatment they need when in care. Hedgehog numbers are already in serious decline and our changing weather patterns are only adding to their plight. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) have teamed up to create Hedgehog Street www.hedgehogstreet.or g where you can become a Hedgehog Champion, and learn all about our prickly friends. ! Samantha Ramsey and Robin Ritchie Tewkesbury mustard is a blend of mustard flour and grated Horseradish root. It was developed in the town and gained a certain notoriety in the 17th Century, becoming a staple condiment of the kitchens of the time. Shakespeare mentions the mustard in Henry IV where Falstaff has the line: “his wit’s as thick as Tewkesbury Mustard.” Originally the mustard was prepared by grinding the mustard seeds into mustard flour,
combining this with finely grated horseradish (and sometimes herbs and spices) then forming the mixture into balls which were then dried to aid preservation. Tewkesbury Mustard Company make a variety of blends - including the potently hot ‘Goode Wyfe’s Revenge’ and sell it in both jars and traditional ball format. All contain local horseradish and cider. Ashchurch House, after being a children’s home for a time was demolished to make way for Alderman Knight School but Walton House survived with other parts of its land devoted to housing and Tirlebrook School. However, in 1972 Ashchurch was really rural but the M5 had been opened and it was to attract the industry and housing which now dominate Jack Boskett’s superb photograph from 2012. New compensation limits in force from February
The Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order 2012 will increase the limits on certain Employment Tribunal awards and other amounts payable under employment legislation from 1st February 2013,writes David Bloxham of Thomson & Bancks Solicitors. The notable changes made by the new Order are:
! The limit on the amount of a week's pay for the purposes of calculating, among other things, statutory redundancy payments and the basic award for unfair
dismissal will increase from £430 to £450.

The minimum basic award in cases where the dismissal was unfair by virtue of health and safety, employee representative, trade union, or occupational pension trustee reasons will increase from £ 5,300 to £ 5,500. The new rates apply where the event giving rise to compensation or payment occurs on or after 1st February 2013. For example, in the case of unfair dismissal the rates apply to all dismissals where the effective date of termination falls on or after this date. Where the dismissal or relevant event falls before 1st February, the old limits will still apply. ! Refrigerant fluid circulates through the panels and absorbs heat energy from the atmosphere. This increase in temperature changes the fluid into a gas, which then passes through a compressor - and the temperature increases. The hot gas then flows through a heat in the exchanger Thermodynamic block, which transfers the heat into the water. The gas then passes through an expansion valve, reverts o liquid and flows back to the panels to repeat the process., The system is very efficient as it works both day and night. ANNUAL SELLS WELL Sales of Tewkesbury Historical Society’s ‘Then and Now Annual 2012’ have been going well. The book is an anthology of twelve of the features published each month in Tewkesbury Direct. More than that, extra historical information has been added. Proceeds from the sale of the booklet are being devoted to the running of Tewkesbury Town Museum. Most of our cheeses are so unpasteurized, retaining the full flavour of the milk. With over 100 local, national and international cheeses, there is something for everyone. The Gloucestershire area is blessed with wonderful farmland for animal grazing – lots of green grass due to an abundance of rain!! This provides us with some good local really cheeses. Since starting the shop 10 years ago, there has been an increase in local cheese makers. One such find this week comes from a cheese producer in the Forest of Dean. “Dutchgirl” produce some really good Organic Gouda-style cheeses. I’m not a fan of “bits” in my cheese as it typically means a lesser quality cheese with poor quality “bits”! Dutchgirl have three varieties of their cheese, one plain,
and two “with bits”; cumin and onion & garlic. These additions are quite traditional on the continent for cheeses, so I’ll let that one go – and it still tastes like an artisan cheese – delicious! If Gouda’s not your thing, maybe you could try Brie de Meaux & truffle, Comte or a Belgian strong blue. Why not call in and try a few samples to see what you like. A Carol Concert was held in Tewkesbury Abbey last month to celebrate life and raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Volunteer Speaker for Cancer Research UK Heffernan’s Mark immediate family had been struck by cancer four years ago. One in three people will have been or will be diagnosed with cancer in their life time. The Goal of Cancer Research UK is to reduce the number of deaths, (157,275 last year), by stopping cancer in the first place. As well as raising awareness for early recognition of symptoms funding supports studies such as: EPIC which explores the links between diet and cancer, research into improving treatments and developing new ones, giving cancer a cold by using the flu virus to attach it, and also providing a 24hr helpline. Thanks were given to Tewkesbury Tesco for donating the wine for the reception, Cheltenham CRUK for the mince pies and Bookworm Tewkesbury for organising the event.

Army of Angels is a registered charity, based in Tewkesbury. The charity also attempts to aid dependants of Army, Navy and Airforce personnel who find themselves in need. The new store in Tewkesbury is the first of Army of Angels’ charity shops.
Strensham acts as Severe Weather Hub Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is co-ordinating the emergency response for seven fire and rescue services in the South West. Members drop by to enjoy a two course meal, which is served each week at Elizabeth Wyatt House in Barton Street (opposite the entrance to the hospital). In recent months, numbers of attendees have been in decline and the organisers are extending an invitation to all local senior citizens to call in. A spokesperson for the club said: “We offer a two course lunch with tea and coffee for £4.00, we can also arrange transport for an extra 50p. “It is a great opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, and have a lovely chat and catch up!” The club also organises an annual day trip, has been on trains, boats and visited local gardening/shopping outlets. " FRIENDS CHRISTMAS FUND RAISER The Friends of Southend Farm group (pictured above) sealed a successful year’s fund raising with a charity mince pie day last month. Each year Kathy Stagg and her colleagues organise a series of fundraising events at fetes at Southend Farm in Tredington, near Tewkesbury. 2012’s grand total was £4,266.45p - which will go to Cancer Research UK. The latest event, a bingo game, raised £422.55. Kathy has asked us to thank all the local traders for their very generous donations.
TEWKESBURY BUSINESS HELPS TO BRING ANIMAL MAGIC Buttercup Ironing in Tewkesbury are looking for donations for Cheltenham Animal Shelter. Blankets, pet treats and toys are all welcomed - along with dried and tinned pet food for the centre’s dogs, cats and rabbits. Busy time for SARA The latter part of 2012 saw the Tewkesburybased Severn Area Association Rescue attend over 20 flood related incidents. These included the evacuation of local residents and pets. The organisation, which is based at the Water Rescue Centre next to Tewkesbury Fire Station is entirely funded by public support and voluntary donation. They rallied round with various fund raising efforts, achieving a grand total of £1800 for CLIC the charity which helps young people with cancer. When figures of the pair first appeared in the window, they became a talking point amongst customers. SECRET WARTIME AIRFIELD IS THE SUBJECT OF A NEW BOOK Defford Airfield a few miles north of Tewkesbury, was one of the most secret places in Britain during the Second World War. For it was at Defford that the radar equipment invented by scientists at Malvern, was fitted to
aircraft, tested and proven. Now local author Bob Shaw has lifted the veil
and provided insight into what went on at Defford. WHC, which hires tools and plant equipment, opened a new centre at Ashchurch last year. Youngsters from the club went along to the depot in Alexander Way, are pictured and (above) alongside one of the many pieces of heavy plant available for hire. The under thirteen side can normally be found playing and training at Tewkesbury RFC’s Moats ground on Sundays from 10.30am. The tigers, which is the junior section of Tewkesbury RFC, now has over 200 boy and girl players, but new members are welcome.

Maritime Volunteers Get Royal Seal of Approval A national nautical charity is all at sea after being awarded a prestigious award from Buckingham Palace. The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) has just been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award 2012 for volunteer work carried out during the year including marshalling duties at the Olympics and work undertaken during the Queen’s jubilee. The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen's coronation. It is the MBE for volunteer groups. Locally, The MVS Severn Unit meets in Tewkesbury at 7.30 p.m. every Monday, and is part of a national organisation with more than thirty units across the country. The Tewkesburybased Severn Unit have been involved this year in providing safety boat cover for local Jubilee celebrations held on the

They were called out to give assistance a number of times at the marina, Tewkesbury Sailing Club and the town moorings.
