The townsfolk of Tewkesbury are being invited to join together to plan celebrations to mark two significant dates in the town’s history - the 900th anniversary of the consecration of the abbey, and the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury. 2021 may be two years away - but Tewkesbury Together’s 20.21 team is inviting groups and individuals to get involved now - either by planning their own events, or helping to run those that are already planned.

The year 2021 will be big for the Abbey and for Tewkesbury as it will be 900 years since its consecration in 1121 and 550 years since the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. The Abbey launched its 2021 fund in 2016, to make sure the historic building is ‘fit for purpose’ for both the 900th

anniversary, and for future generations. Projects include the cleaning of the Milton Organ, reshaping the cloister gardens - and developing a welcome area. Phase two of the fund will take projects forward beyond 2021. Full details can be found on the abbey’s website www.tewkesburyabbey .org.uk Suggestions for how the two anniversaries can be celebrated are being invited. 2021’s Medieval Festival will, of course, be very special indeed - but it is hoped that many other themed events will take place in and around the town in the build up to, and throughout the anniversary year itself. by Bernard MacLaverty Paperback, £8.99 I have held back in reviewing this book as it seems most appropriate to feature this month a novel about a retired couple, Stella and Gerry, who take a short break to Amsterdam in January. It is Bernard MacLaverty's first novel for some sixteen years. The author was born in 1942, some of his descriptions and word selection show his age and his understanding of the frailties of the 1940s generation. They certainly gave me the odd chuckle! Stella and Gerry escape Glasgow for a few days to the Dutch capital, they even venture through the red light district in search of a drink. Gerry has a problem with alcohol, something he thinks he hides from Stella, as, at home, he tends to drink after she has gone to bed. They grew up and met in Northern Ireland, the author's own origins. Gerry an Architect, Stella a teacher. They suffered in the troubles and those experiences resulted in them leaving to live in Scotland, where they brought up their one son Michael, who know lives in Canada, so they rarely see him or their grandson, Toby. They are very different in character, apart from Gerry's fondness for the bottle, Stella a Roman Catholic is a believer, and her faith is very important to her. Gerry only managing to go along with her to the Christmas Mass to

accompany her safely home. Their affection for each other comes across in various ways, but the trip has undertones as Stella has certain plans and early on their first day, while Gerry sleeps off the duty free, she ventures off to visit a religious retreat. The holiday sees their relationship played out, ups and downs, affection, frustrations, tears and laughter all offset against the background of the magic of Amsterdam, the splendours of the Rijksmuseum and a visit to Anne Frank's house which leaves Stella confused and upset. Events and their life stories unfold over their few days away, the weather plays a part as their journey home is delayed by snow, so the climax to the book is experienced in the stark surroundings of a departure hall at Schipol airport. Watlege in a different light A letter from Tewkesbury Direct reader Simon Hayward gives a different perspective to the ‘Then & Now’ feature in last year’s November issue: Dear Tewkesbury Direct: “I read with great interest your article in the November edition, regarding the property (Watlege House) that once stood on the grounds of the more recent Barton Road Surgery. “I am delighted to be able to provide an alternative photograph. It portrays the property in an entirely different light to the one in your feature. “In 1871, the Osbournes who owned the property described it as a ‘handsome villa.’ “This was endorsed by my father’s vivid recollections of his family home. He recalled the multi-bedroomed house, with extensive gardens, croquet lawn and stable block - which latterly garaged the motors cars belonging to George Hayward in the 1920s. “Describing the villa as ‘not-so-handsome’ in the only known photo of a partly demolished

servation would surely not grant permission to demolish such a substantial property. “Before the developers did demolish it, however, they should have taken note of the house name on the front pillar. BESPOKE CARRIAGE TAKES FAMILY TO WEDDING Ali Phillips, from Beckford, always had a very close bond with his grandfather David, who sadly passed away in 2002. Ali found a unique and touching way of remembering David at his wedding to Charlotte Barr recently - by using his grandfather’s tractor to ferry members of the Phillips family to church. The Ferguson T20 (also known in the 1950s as ‘The little grey Fergie’) is currently owned by Ali’s Uncle, Tod. It is believed to have been manufactured at Coventry in 1957. Ali, who runs AGP Autoservice at Bredon’s Hardwick, spend many

Dad Jeremy took the wheel later, driving the bride and groom from the Church to the Reception, at Deer Park, Woollas Hall, on the other side of Bredon Hill.

TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW by John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society In Tewkesbury’s Two Forgotten Railways, the link between the branch-line and the neighbouring Corn Mill, known later as Martin and Bennett’s, was established - but the mystery of the station roof is not solved.

Mystery Photo - was this the factory in Oldbury Road?

1928 Photo of 1838 Station with roof behind and adjacent to Martin & Bennetts A roof was evident in the mystery photograph and B, the aerial photograph of 1928. It is thought that the roof had disappeared in World War II. It was an impressive structure and begs the question: who paid for it? Was it the Railway, which between the wars

was short of cash - or the Corn Miller, which did depended on the railway for coal supplies and sending away their flour? There was an entrance between the two units and Harry Workman, whose brother Bill worked for the miller, claimed that the latter had bought a railtanker especially for transporting away their flour. Can any reader confirm the link between the miller and the railway – and establish if the mystery picture is of Oldbury Road? F.C. Martin was the original name of the firm but it did have a depot in Avonmouth. In any case, the shape of the roof is different and which are the houses? I do not think this photo belongs to Tewkesbury. Mysteries need to be solved – with your help! What has happened to the firm’s archive? (Call 01684 294262 or john history46@btinternet.com)

Joint supports I have a love /hate relationship with joint supports. They can be very useful when you have an injury and you simply cannot rest it. However, used repeatedly or during most day to day activities and you may find that you suffer from secondary issue relating to this overuse. I am not against joint supports, in fact I do often recommend them to my patients. However, putting a support on a joint which you are suffering with is not getting to the root of the problem but simply masking the issue. A support does exactly that, “supports”. Therefore, the muscles usually responsible for this job will then not have to work so hard and depending on the level of use of the support these muscles can weaken. Once you stop using the support you are then left with weak muscles that then need

to be strengthened in order to get them back to normal. This can be a lengthy and quite unnecessary journey. Joint supports are best used under the guidance of a medical practitioner. I often recommend people who use them do so for a few hours at a time allowing the time for the joint to be supported and move with reduced discomfort and then allowing the joint and muscles to move as they should in order to maintain normal function. If you feel you are becoming dependent on your joint supports please feel free to come

2018 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SPECTACULAR

Mitton Manor Pre-School Christmas Concert Our Christmas Concert was held on Friday 14th December at the Watson Hall. The children, aged between 2 and 4 years old, had worked hard preparing for the concert, and were very excited to be performing in front of their families. They looked fantastic in their costumes and performed their lines and songs perfectly to a packed hall. We would like to thank the staff, committee, children and their families for their hard work in making the concert a success. THOUGHTS FAR AWAY FROM WINTER IN TEWKESBURY

by Stephanie Jepson of Courtney World Travel When it’s dark and cold outside our thoughts automatically drift to warmer climates and faraway shores. I’ve not long come back from Oman in the United Arab Emirates It has always been on my ‘bucket list’ of places to visit and I was not disappointed. Birthplace of Sinbad and source of that aromatic treasure – frankincense. The country perches on the south-east tip of the Arabian Peninsula overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. This magical kingdom offers so much more than perfect beaches – it has 5 Unesco World Heritage Sites and with landscapes ranging from sand dunes, tropical coastlines, majestic mountains, fjords, stunning palaces, imposing forts and archaeological sites and marine and nature reserves it has something to offer for everyone. Muscat, the capital city of Oman lies between the Al Hajar mountains and the coast and offers a glimpse of authentic Arabia. Flying time to Muscat is approximately 7 hours from the UK and with only a 4 hour time difference it is perfect for a bit of winter warmth with no jet-lag. Muscat is a great base to stay for a few days and has many beautiful hotels with fabulous beaches and crystal clear waters. From here you can discover many of the cultural delights Muscat and Oman has to offer. Whilst visiting Oman a trip to the Al Hajar mountain range, 2000 meters above sea level is a must. I visited Jabal Al Akdar (translated means Green Mountain) on my trip. The drive up the mountain is stunning. You can only travel by 4 wheel drive and the army have a check point to ensure the vehicle you are travelling in meets the correct criteria and to ensure it’s papers are all in order before you can commence the steep climb with it’s hairpin bends to the top. Once at the top you are greeted by the most stunning vistas – its breath taking. It is like entering a world that time has forgotten, clean unpolluted air and skies which twinkle with stars and faraway galaxies. Villages with houses made of mud cling to the sides of the mountain. The villagers here have farmed the verges of the mountain since time began. Every year, from the end of March

until mid-May, the rugged, rocky mountain landscape of Jabal Akhdar is transformed into a spectacular shade of pink from the precious roses that are grown on these verges.

and even has a monsoon season, known as the Khareef. You would be forgiven for thinking you were in the Indian Ocean. It is a total contrast to the desert and mountains and enjoys a

To say that a taxidermist stuffs animals is misleading. In fact the skin is removed, preserved and arranged around a model of the original body called a ‘form’. Dispelling all the myths about her profession, Becky Dick, a taxidermist based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, will be

telling you all you need to know about this much misunderstood art, and how she goes about creating her taxidermy modern classics. All Becky’s taxidermy specimens are ethically sourced and are either road-kill or euthanised wild-life from the vets, RSPCA and WWT Slimbridge, and which couldn't be saved due to injuries and illness. No mammals or birds are killed when making her pieces of taxidermy. Tickets are available either on the door or in advance from the muse-

um and include admission to the John Moore Museum and the Merchant’s House – plus refreshments. As a beginner you want to choose the type of tropical fish that give you the best chance of success in your aquarium, writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only. So, picking fish that are fun and easy to care for is important. Neon Tetras Neons are the most popular freshwater tropical fish due to their size and vibrant colours. They can grow to 2cms long. These fish need to be in a school of at least six, otherwise they become stressed and or timid.

Danios Guppies other popular tropical fish. These small livebearers, (no eggs) breed prolifically, so if you don’t want lots of guppy babies, it’s possible to purchase only males on request.

It was alleged that Bell was a smuggler, and he may have fabricated the stories of apparitions to detract attention from his illicit activities here. Passing the castle, go through the gate into the field ahead of you (2) and continue ahead on the path to go through some trees. (3). You are now on a bridleway with the wall of Overbury Park to your right. Take the next path on the left (4) and walk with the field boundary on your right until you

reach the buildings of Sundial Farm (5). Look out for the sundial on the barn. In the early 1990s there were reports of a ‘black panther’ sited close to these old barns and in nearby woodland - which was christened ‘The Beast of Bredon.’ Leaving Sundial farmyard, take the right hand path (6) and keep along it until you meet the track at the scarp edge of Bredon Hill (7). Turn right along it to reach Parson’s Folly the tower at Bredon summit. There are excellent views over the vales of Gloucester and Evesham from this point. The large stone in the small quarry below is known as ‘the elephant stone’ - and it’s easy to see why! Exit via the earthworks (8) and take the permissive path back to the Bridleway (9). Turn right to descend to point (4), and back down to Kemerton.

PARTYING AFTER THE WAR HAD ENDED? In mid-January 1919 there was a special party in Tewkesbury, which was a reminder that the war did not end for all at the Armistice in November. The “honoured guests” of the Mayor and Mayoress, Alderman and Mrs Alfred Baker, were all released Prisoners of War who had reached home. 16 men were named, 15 POWs of Germany. At the party, the Register reporter interviewed some of them about their experiences. The ‘luckier’ ones were those who fell prisoner by the thousand near the end of the war after the 21 March 1918 attack- others like John Hanson had endured a long 4 year period of captivity. The cost of victory was high: in 1919 673,375 were declared dead or missing - there were 154,308 released prisoners. If a nation can be judged on the way in treats is prisoners then the enemy was guilty at best of neglect, forcing them to undergo the same starvation as the German people. Jack Pullin, one of the guests, was unfortunate enough to have been a prisoner of the Turks – their government had not signed the Hague Convention, which imposed mutual standards for their treat-

All were put on a forced march to camps in Turkey. Frank Neale was subjected to an 800-mile forced march across the Desert with no food and very little water. Of the 2,500 British, 1,750 did not survive the journey, dying of maltreatment or disease. Grammar School boy William

Greenwood died of cholera having reached Ankara. The news of the death of Albert Clarke came on 24 December 1918, despite the fact that he had reached an allied hospital in Beirut. Butcher, Jack Pullin, survived to attend the party but left the town so we do not know his age at death. However, an officer, Thomas Strickland from Apperley, survived but died in 1938 aged only 47 from TB, probably exacerbated by life as a POW. Former bakery van-driver, Frank Woolley, also attended but died aged 45; his family believe because he had been gassed. Also attending was fellow baker-POW, Harold Crouch, who was the Mayor after WWII – fittingly he welcomed home the POWs. He died in 1947, aged only 54: why was he so young? John Dixon.

Tewkesbury Cubs Entertain at Christmas Nicky Fendt, Akela of 3rd Tewkesbury Cubs, Avon Pack, sent this in to us… I thought you might be interested to know that our cub pack visited Tewkesbury Fields Care Home on 10th December to sing Christmas Carols and songs with the residents. The cubs sang about a dozen songs, with many of the residents joining in. The cubs then gave out Christmas cards that they had made at our previous weeks meeting, and

they chatted to the residents. Many of the residents had been scouts or guides in their younger days. The care home staff kindly presented the cubs with chocolates to take home. It was lovely evening, enjoyed very much by both the cubs and the residents, and we hope to visit again in the summer to sing campfire songs. By Nicky Fendt.

NOW AND THEN EXTRA with John Dixon and Jack Boskett Our Resident Historian, John Dixon has teamed up with local Photographer Jack Boskett to provide some remarkable comparisons of the town, after some aerial views of the town, were discovered in Australia. The photos we will be running over the next few months, were marked up to have been taken in 1950, but closer scrutiny reveals the were taken in about 1928. In the first image, Healings Mill, clearly dominates the view, river trows and railway sidings can be seen on the River Severn wharf as well as

now demolished tall chimneys in the Mill yard. To the right of the Mill are stacks of Hay, presumably the grass harvest from the Ham, indicating the photo may have been taken in late Summer. For ease of comparison our chart indicates major changes that have been made since then and now.

EXCERPT(S) FROM NORTHWAY VOICE ISSUE 18 OCTOBER 2018 The Magazine for Northway Parish Council

HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY NORTHWAY PARISH Did you know that Northway Parish is now 10 years old? Ashchurch Parish and its Council, the predecessor, was formed in 1894 and covered an area of 4201 acres. There was a population of 710 which stayed pretty stable until an Army Camp was erected and occupied in the parish, as well as a Prisoner of War Camp at Northway. After the war a national housing shortage meant that the vacant huts at Northway were taken over as a temporary measure but in 1949 the Northway Housing Estate was built by Cheltenham District Council with Government assistance. A petition to change the boundaries was lodged with, and approved by, the Boundary Commission and as a result Ashchurch Parish was abolished on 31st March 2008. On the 1st April 2008 Northway Parish was

born with a population of 4282 residents (now 5190). The boundary for Northway Parish is the railway line, the Back Brook (beyond the Carrant), the M5 and the A46. The Council was allocated a number of 13 members to represent Northway, and an election had to be called to fill those spaces. The first few years was a struggle as the new Northway Parish Council had to ‘find its feet’ having no monetary reserves to fall back on. Gradually the Council was able to start providing more for the parish

and in that time has built a new community hub (with the help of a public work loan), a new play area and, more recently, tarmacked the playing field car park. These are some of the larger items but on a daily basis the Council provides many services to the parish ie. litter pick ups, play area inspections, provision and maintenance of bins, benches, bus shelters, responsibility for parish buildings and land ensuring that at all times it acts within its legal remit, which it takes very seriously.

Major Development concerns for Northway & Ashchurch Following the adoption of the JCS in December 2017, the three Councils (Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester City) are required to undertake an immediate partial review. This was due to a late decision by the MOD not to bring the army camp land forward for development as expected and the subsequent loss of 2,500 planned homes. Tewkesbury Borough Council will be holding a public consultation in

the coming weeks on its concept master plan for Ashchurch which will also affect Northway. Part of the plan will be to close the level crossing on Aston Fields Lane and to replace it with a bridge over the railway further north.

Your Parish Council has great concerns over this part of the concept. The consultants hired by TBC have come up with several options for the roads connecting to the proposed bridge, all of which would be challenging for Northway.

The consultant’s preference is that part of Aston Fields Lane being relocated north of Sinderberry Drive and dropping down to Hardwick Bank Road just east of The Park. Then traffic would either go over the motor-

way bridge to the Bredon Road or down The Park to Northway Lane, then over the motorway bridge to Shannon Way and Ashchurch Road. It is hard to imagine how much damage would be caused to this already gridlocked area

and the residential area of Northway and we believe it to be unacceptable.It would be made worse by the proposed 420 homes north of Hardwick Bank Road and 820 proposed homes north of the army camp.

SEVERN UNIT MVS LEARN ABOUT SHIP’S GRAVEYARD Before the year ended, Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service had a most memorable evening when local maritime historian and author Paul Barnett came to talk to the unit about the Purton Hulks and the history of Lydney Docks. The Purton Hulks are located just above Sharpness and lie between the banks of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the Severn Estuary and it is the largest ship graveyard in mainland Britain. Most of the boats and ships were deliberately beached in the 1950's beside the River Severn near Purton to reinforce the river bank and are now in a state of considerable decay but are of great historical importance. Head of Unit Nic Price said “In 1999 our speaker commenced a research project to record and recognise the site’s 86 ships which have been found so far and he illustrated his talk with remarkable photographs of these as well as the historic and now protected Lydney Docks. Both sites are most interesting places and well worth a visit.”

Sometimes members of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have to be innovative and able to adapt to circumstances beyond their control. A recent example was when we had booked a speaker to tell us about The History of Midwifery. Some might say that midwifery was perhaps an inappropriate subject for a men’s club, but on this occasion, wives and partners attended as this was our monthly “Open” meeting. In the event, the speaker did not turn up, so members had to be innovative and adaptive. The Chairman opened the meeting with his regular “What happened on this day in history” and recalled the ‘Cod War’ of 1975 just as the prospects of renegotiating fishing rights are on the agenda today with the EU and Brexit in mind. Then one of our members was able to step up and run a quiz. The Scouts’ motto was ‘Be Prepared’ but having a quiz ready for emergencies is exceptional, or maybe normal for Probus. As the speaker had been due to talk on midwifery, one of our members told us of the home births of two of his daughters – those were

the days when the man was supposed to boil a kettle, fetch the towels and then stay out of the way. He told us how he had to head off to the telephone box with a handful of pennies for the coin box. He phoned the first number and was told “sorry not on duty, try phoning another”. The second one was already booked so he had to go to plan C – but by then he was on his last coin. He persuaded the busy midwife to call a replacement herself and he dashed home only to have to wait, not knowing whether anyone would come, but still reassuring his wife.

The midwife arrived at 5 minutes to midnight and the baby arrived at 5 past. Split second timing. Members will be reminded of this story when next they complain about their mobile phones! Tewkesbury Museum can’t run to a Mammoth’s skeleton. There’s not enough space. We do, though have a Mammoth’s tooth and it has a story to tell. Surprising as it seems, Woolly Mammoths roamed around Tewkesbury for twenty thousand years, first arriving about forty thousand years ago. Conditions were never perfect but whilst there was grass enough to feed them they survived on what were the fringes of the vast ‘tundra steppes’ which stretched from the British Isles to the Barent’s Sea during the last Ice Age. Woolly Mammoths, about the size of modern African Elephants, were the last evolution of the mammoth line; extinction was a result of climate change, accelerated by hunting. Our Mammoth’s tooth was found in 1957, a very lucky find which was reported in the ‘Tewkesbury Register’: “A Mammoth’s tooth believed to be 300,000 years old is among the latest collection of items presented to the Town Council for proposed Tewkesbury Museum.

The tooth was found in a load of gravel supplied to the Canterbury Leys housing site from Beckford gravel pits. It was found by the Clerk of Works who passed it to Councillor W.E. Lane.

Alongside their impressive tusks, Mammoths had four teeth, one on each side of upper and lower jaws. These were molars, designed for chewing their diet of grasses, sedges and trees. The chewing surface has ridges designed for efficient grinding. Like some ruminants today, as the teeth wore down, the upper surface was pushed upwards. Through their lifetime, their teeth were replaced five times. Because a number of mammoth bodies have been found deep-frozen in the Siberian permafrost, a lot of research has been possible, which includes a complete genome profile, enabling comparisons to be made with Elephants. Though

So as 2019 begins, perhaps you are thinking, “I wonder what it will bring, I wonder what I shall achieve by Christmas this year.” So perhaps I could introduce you to the world of art, which covers many areas and in many mediums. Perhaps when asked for your definition of art, Oils and

Watercolour spring to mind...yes two lovely mediums to choose. But what about Acrylic, Mixed Media, sketching with pencils, charcoal, wax crayons, felt tips, acrylic inks or pastels. There are many things that make a mark and are used in art. For myself, I prefer acrylics, acrylic inks and

Mixed Media. I love to draw what I see, and not what I think I see. Art, I find a very relaxing and interesting hobby and one I thoroughly enjoy. When I retired from the daily trek to and from work. What a lot of time I had on my hands. Then I joined Tewkesbury Art Society. I am so thankful I did so. The members were lovely and welcoming and very helpful to ‘The New Kid on the Block’, all my shyness went out of the window. Tewkesbury Art Society was formed by a group of like minded folk way back in 1965, but back then it was called The Art Club and met on Thursday evenings. TAS as it’s effectionately called, has come a long way since then. There are over 50 members at the moment. Members meet every Tuesday at The Methodist Church Hall, by The Cross, 10am until 12 noon, refreshments available. This is our own painting days, where members bring their own equipment and

do their own thing, some will be working on painting for either of our two exhibitions each year. More about that later. A few draw or paint greeting cards and a few like myself start with good intention but end up chatting to other members. The morning is a relaxed affair over a cup of coffee, tea and the odd chocolate biscuit or two. Every few weeks members and visitors enjoy a demonstration by a professional artist, which runs from 10.15am until 12.30pm. £5.00 for non members. The hall is disabled friendly and indeed we have two members in wheelchairs. Normally, three times a year, we have workshops from 10am until 4pm, these prove very popular and soon fill up. So advisable to put your name down quickly. This year they are in Watercolour, Mixed Media, and Life Drawing. During the Summer Months, members enjoy “Plein Air” in which we visit beautiful houses and gardens in and around Tewkesbury and some times further a field, taking a packed lunch on these days. Painting outside is a real treat and we meet some lovely people and we are sometimes treated to tea and cake by our lovely hosts and hostesses. These days out are organised by our chairman, John Griffin, who does a sterling job of searching out interesting venues. TAS has two Exhibitions each year. The main one is our Summer Exhibition which this year runs from Saturday 20th July until Saturday 27th July (excluding Sunday). July 19th is open evening for members and their guests. At least 100 paintings and drawings are exhibited many for sale plus cards. At the same time as the Summer Exhibition, there is the “Walking

Exhibition” where shops in the High Street and a few in Barton Street, allow a member to exhibit a painting in their windows. This coincides with Tewkesbury in Bloom. This started the year TAS celebrated its Golden Anniversary in

2015. I hope this has given you an insight to Tewkesbury Art Society and how art can be an amazing hobby for either yourself or friends or both perhaps. We are a group of friendly folk who are joined together with our love of art. TAS is made up of members of all abilities, from rank beginners to near professionals. We hope to see you soon. Repair Café: New Year, New Time Tewkesbury Repair Café is looking forward to exciting new challenges in the New Year. With increasing numbers of volunteers in all roles – repairers, front of house, catering, - we want not just to repair more items but to encourage others to learn how to fix things, to extend the life of goods and reduce waste going to landfill or in oceans. We will try to fix most portable items but obviously we cannot always succeed, If you are not sure whether to bring something along, contact us first via Facebook: Tewkesbury Repair Café or website www.tewkesburyrepaircafe.co.uk. The Repair Café has also changed its start and finish times, which should make it easier for clients and volunteers. The new start time is 2PM, with a 5PM finish. Last orders for repairs are taken at 4.30 PM. The Café will meet on the second Saturday of every month, except July and December at Tewkesbury Baptist Church Hall, Station Rd. Dates for the first half of 2019 are: January 12th, February 9th, March 9th, April 13th, May 11th and June 8th. Friends of the Earth will continue to serve their delicious homemade cakes, tea and coffee. As ever, there is no charge for the repairer’s time and skill, but clients pay for – or supply – parts. CROOKED ALLEY

Crooked Alley is long gone, but was once a main thoroughfare between Barton Street and Oldbury Road. This was in the days, two hundred years ago, when there was no road where Nelson Street now is; just a series of alleys. Crooked Alley is named for its layout, not its character. It was an alley which had changed route, for long-forgotten reasons, and had two right-angled bends. Presumably, two alleys had been joined and modified. It was unique in Tewkesbury. The entrances can still be seen. The Barton Street entrance is a doorway on the left of the Mustard House (Kellands Financial Management) with a sign, ‘13a Barton Street’, above it. The Oldbury entrance was through the entrance now called ‘Nelson’s Court’ behind Ginger’s hairdressers. The alley seems to have been typically overcrowded and insanitary. There were regular concerns expressed about the condition of the drainage and the state of the well. Crooked Alley was hit particularly hard in the Cholera outbreak of 1849. Six people, from four households, died in August: Samuel Hawkins, 54, Stocking maker; Ann Hawkins, 49, washerwoman; James Farmer, 40, Ropemaker; Sarah Weaver, 50, Shoe-binder; Ann Weaver, 6, Shoe-binder; Elizabeth Edgewick, 65, Fortune Teller. Though improvements were made, there were continuing problems with drainage and water, and in 1914 it was reported that the nuisance of having insufficient WCs had at last been resolved. As well as houses, there was industry. Mr Holland had a hat manufactory and Mr Davies had a stocking-framesmith’s workshop. There was also a retail coalyard and in 1881 Edward Sage applied for a licence to open a slaughterhouse. In 1875, long after Nelson Street opened, John Potter and William Knight, being owners of nearly all the property in Crooked Alley made an application for it to be stopped up, so ending its role as a public highway and right of way. Despite some objection, the order was granted. Crooked Alley became Alexandra Court (from Barton Street) and Alexandra Place (from Oldbury Road). Alexandra is a departure from normal naming practice. It seems probable that it was named for

Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who had married Edward Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in 1863. Locally, though, people stuck doggedly to Crooked Alley. Even the census continued to use

the old name. The stopping-up was intended to allow Potter and Knight to make ‘great alterations and improvements’. In Alexandra Court, most of the property seems to have been demolished to create a garden, but Alexandra Place remained unimproved. By 1918, there were problems with dereliction and a series of attempts to get improvements made. Paving was a particular problem, and having had no success in persuading the property owners, by now Mrs Pullin and Mr Holbrook, to carry out the work, the Council took the unusual step of using the Private Street Works Act to do it themselves and recharge the owners. It must have been very bad! There were the all too familiar tragedies during the First World War. The Collins family were more involved than most. Their son, Private F J Collins, 2nd Gloucesters, was killed by shrapnel in February 1915. In March

4,000 CANDLES Bishop Rachel will on January 6 attend the annual Epiphany Carol Service at Tewkesbury Abbey with other members of the clergy and congregations from across the Tewkesbury and Winchcombe Deanery. Over 4,000 candles will be used to light the Abbey. They are laid out on the floor in the Chapels and around the building to accentuate the beautiful architecture. Every year a theme is chosen and in the past these have included The 12 days of Christmas, Stories from the Old Testament, Parables from the New Testament, Christmas Carols and Nursery Rhymes, in January 2019 our theme will be ‘My Favourite Things’. Some of the displays

will be favourite designs from previous years and some will depict items from the song. The service contains congregational carols, readings and anthems sung by Abbey Choir. The service begins in semi darkness with the choir adding to the atmosphere by singing first from the East End of Abbey then processing to sing in the Lady Chapel and other parts of the Abbey. All are welcome at the service which begins at 6.00pm and no tickets are necessary.

tent. One of the days was at the W H Smith Training Centre and was basically a team building day with problem solving, orienteering, obstacle courses amongst other things. Everything we did was recorded on video for later examination.

I did not enjoy the day. I am not and never have been a lover of sporting type activities. Two left feet, butter fingers, slow reaction, no sense of direction always rendered me as one of the last to be chosen at school as a pupil for any sporting team game. I was useless and I knew it AND was reminded how useless by staff and children alike. Imagine how I felt about this particular day !!! Yes! Mortified. And my self worth and esteem plummeted. A few days later I was still pretty sore in more ways than one, not helped by having seen myself on the video, we had a speaker talk about

self-worth. This was going to be interesting as at that particular moment I don't think that I had any at all amidst such an august body of fellow headteachers. What was I doing there ??? The speaker rambled on and I remember wondering, many times, how long it was till coffee time. I was feeling no better. If anything I was feeling worse ! He took a £10 note out of his pocket – one of the old papery ones not the plastic type we have today – and waved it in the air. “Who wants it ? “ he asked with a broad smile. “ Come on now. Be honest about it. I am giving this away. Who wants it ?”

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater Continued from page 58 Most of us put our hands up. Some were too embarrassed to make an answer and looked at the floor. My hand went up !! I could manage that without any problem. It was summer time and we were sitting outside on the lawn. He waved the note in his hand again and then let it fall to the ground and started jumping on it and rubbing the note with the soles of his shoes. No men in white coats appeared. He just said again, “Who wants it ? Just put up your hands if you do.” A few more hands went up this time. A case of if you cant beat 'em

join 'em ! He bent down and picked the note up, now quite dirty and worse for wear. But, seemingly not satisfied with that, he crumpled it up in his hand and made it into a tiny ball which he bounced from one hand to the other like a table tennis ball. To say that we were all bemused would be an understatement. “Who wants it ?” he asked again. Almost all hands were up now but none of us quite sure what he was getting at. And then came the explanation. “ Do you all realise that you have learned one of life's most important lessons this afternoon ? “ he asked. None

of us ventured a response. “No matter what I did to that money you still wanted it because you knew that it did not decrease in value. All of the time it was still worth £10. “How many times in your life have you been dropped, badly treated, felt that you were being ground into the earth by decisions you had to make and circumstances that had come your way?” No one spoke but it was obvious that we had all formed quite a list in our own minds of such happenings in our own lives. He continued, “All these things make us feel worthless but I hope that I have helped you to understand that no matter what has happened to you in your life or even what will happen in the future, like that £10 note, you will never lose your essential value. Each one of you is special. Each one of you is unique. Each one of you is important. Each one of you is of value today and every day ! “ Never forget that !” None of us actually went home with that £10 note but I know we all went home feeling that we had a lesson well learned!
