I delayed this review as I thought this book was an ideal read for long winter nights. "Trust" is an ambitious novel which the author carries off with success. A story divided into four sections, each following on from the earlier, consecutive but interlinked. A deep engrossing readable read. The book opens with a novel within a novel - "Bonds" by Harold Vaneer; who becomes a character in his own right later in the book. It recounts a good story of ambition in 1920s New York following the lives of businessman Benjamin Rask and his wife Helen. Everything he touches seems to turn into gold, life is good he even prospers during the Wall Street crash of 1929, but in every good story things turn sour and some misfortune enters their lives. To say more would spoil this opening section. Next we move to an autobiography of Andrew Bevel, himself a businessman the timespan the same. A self congratulatory informal record of his own successes and his marriage to Mildred. Some similarities are identified, the "real life" models for Vaneer's characters in "Bonds". The third section records the experiences of Ida Partenza who is hired by Bevel to write up his career and back story, but we also get to know about her life and her father's living in very different existence from her wealthy employer. She becomes a famous
writer and is recounting her story in hindsight from her later, advanced years after a successful career. Finally in the closing part of the book Mildred Bevel tells us her story. Yet all these stories are recollections of the same events told from the view point of their principal narrator, or are they? This cleverly sculptured readable novel shows us the life of privileged New Yorkers, with excursions to Europe for recuperative reasons. Each section unfolds and comes to a conclusion only for the story to be revisited within the following sections and before the reader's eyes possibly reformulated, possibly contorted but with such dexterity by Hernan Diaz, to give these four accounts their real writer's name. They all form an intriguing read and a wonderful birds eye view of New York life in the early 1920 to 1930s. An unusual book highly recommended.

WI MEMBERS ENJOY CHRISTMAS PARTY WI-th great enthusiasm Newtown WI members all brought something to the Christmas party - bakers to the fore, of course. But wait ... first a magic lantern show, using much safer tech than some of the original kit on display, which had exploding carbide lightsources (pity the poor dog that found some discarded carbide under his favourite tree), and a modern screen - instead of a wet muslin sheet hanging in the open doorway on a cold December afternoon. Subjects ranged from
adverts - Pears soap, Peek Freans (ads have a new kind of cookie), and dentists - to seaside hols, to local landmarks, to Guinness and exhortation to use Windowlene to make everything clearer in the morning, to "the Pledge" homilies, to of course the Nativity story WIth the HTHAS songsheet. The quiz included carols anagrams. The next meetings are
on Wednesday 13th January, 2pm at Wheatpieces Community Centre, and then a celebration of the New Year WIth a carvery lunch on 24th January.

Tewkesbury Photographer Jack Boskett Triumphs at The British Photography Awards Professional photographer Jack Boskett, based in Tewkesbury, has secured a prestigious win at The British Photography Awards held in London at the end of November. Jack emerged victorious in his category with a photograph titled “The Guard on the Train,” captured during the King Charles III Coronation on May 6th in London. Jack’s winning entry competed among three other esteemed Royal photographers and emerged triumphant, showcasing his exceptional talent. His ability to capture a poignant moment during such a significant event has been recognised and celebrated by industry experts and peers. Jack expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m honoured and thrilled to receive this award. Capturing moments that resonate with viewers is what drives my passion for photography. Photographing King Charles III Coronation and travelling into the Capital by train with the troops was a great experience, but it was a very long and tiring day. SKARA BRAE COMES TO TOWN AT THE JOHN MOORE MUSEUM Year 3 pupils from Tewkesbury C of E Primary enjoyed visiting the John Moore Museum in town to set up their Skara Brae model village display for all of Tewkesbury to enjoy This project was the culmination of the childre’s hard work in recreating this ancient settlement using clay, salt dough and various natural resources. They also created information posters to explain all about this amazing settlement in Orkney, Scotland. Skara Brae was a thriving village over 5,000 years ago, long before the pyramids in Egypt or Stonehenge was constructed. It is widely recognised as the best-preserved Neolithis site in Europe,
but was not discovered until the mid 19th century, when a freak storm revealed the houses. Remarkably. some of the dwellings still had furniture. The general public can now view the children’s handy work at the John Moore Museum in Church Street. Tewkesbury CofE Primary School hope that people enjoy seeing how local children have brought a UNESCO World Heritage Site to life. The John Moore Museum is nestled in a
row of historic timberframed buildings close to Tewkesbury Abbey (GL20 5SN) The museum was established in 1980 in memory of the writer and naturalist, John Moore. Today it is also home to an extensive Natural History collection featuring specimens of the mammals and birds native to our countryside, woodlands, wetlands and farmland. Learning something new every week at Probus Club As 2023 came to an end Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club rounded off the year with another excellent selection of wide-ranging subjects covered by our speakers. Very few people today will have heard of a popular singer called Al Bowlly who our speaker Mike Bottomley described as Britain’s first pop star. Al Bowlly was brought up in South Africa with a Greek father and a Lebanese mother. Mike described how as a musician and singer Bowlly joined several bands around Europe ending up in Great Britain and developing a huge following with his mellifluous voice entertaining the bright young things of pre-war night life and recording many classic songs of his era. Paddy Hannigan presented to us his talk entitled The Dark Satanic Mills and he described graphically how during the Industrial Revolution countless families including very young children worked in the cotton mills of the north of England putting themselves at risk of injury or even death because of the appallingly dangerous conditions they endured to earn money. Local speaker Andy Meller came to us and gave a detailed description of cider making in Gloucestershire, detailing the history of what was effectively a cottage
industry with literally thousands of cider mills

PhysioNet collect surplus or redundant equipment for re-cycling, which can then be sent to developing countries where there is a high demand. Two local Rotary clubs, Tewkesbury and Pershore, are working together to collect unwanted items. They can then be refurbished and sent overseas to countries in need, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Fiji, Rwanda, Ukraine, Kenya and many more. Revitalizing Tewkesbury’s Heritage: High Street Heritage Action Zone Reshapes Historic Charm and Identity The High Street Heritage Action Zone is a local government initiative, to improve and restore historical detail to buildings in Tewkesbury high street. Assistance to businesses, through grant aid, has had a significant effect on the heritage feel of the town. The properties; 156 High Street and 1 Barton Street are being restored, as part of the HSHAZ scheme, these are offices of Peter Ball and Co, located at the Cross. Agent for the landlord of the property, Becky Horton, adds: “It is believed, the original building known as Tolsey House facing the Cross, was demolished

It was felt to be very important to include local children in this community event. Local school children were asked to think of a word connected to Royal family and Coronation, and decorate that word, in a postcard size drawing. The response from Carrant Brook Northway infants, the pre school, and family centre was amazing, over 240 pieces of artwork were submitted and were on display at the Community Hub during the Coronation Weekend. It seemed a shame to pack the artwork away, I suggested to council that we should create a large artwork using the children’s art. I had meeting with local artist Sam Morris, and we decided to base the whole piece on a drawing of Buckingham Palace drawn by Noah, from Carrant Brook school. Every piece of art was scanned and included in a graffiti style in the final artwork. The unveiling took place on Monday 27th November at the Northway Community Hub.
The schools and the Parish Council were represented and Noah helped to unveil the artwork. He was presented with his original artwork in a frame.
Sam Morris, explained the process of putting the artwork together and the children were very excited to see their finished art work.

Steaming Mugs, will be coming to Barton Street A brand new Coffee Shop, Steaming Mugs will be opening in Barton Street on the 20th January, it is a joint venture between local lady, Rachel Barber, and Tewkesbury business owner, Liam Jordan. Evocatively named, Steaming Mugs will be opening daily for both take away, and eat in, food and drink. Rachel has years of experience, after spending many years working in Tewkesbury pubs and tearooms. She adds “The coffee shop will be using only locally sourced products from Butchers and Bakeries, and will include, a selection of sandwiches, toasties and jacket potatoes with great fillings, tempting, homemade

A difficulty in following the history of pubs is that their names change, and sometimes transfer from one property to another. This happened with 122 High Street, which until recently was the Orange Pig, a much-loved children’s clothes shop, but never its name whilst it was a pub! It isn’t certain when No. 122 gained its beerhouse licence, but that was all it ever had. It never sold spirits; just beer, probably brewed in the brewhouse in Scotts Alley, behind it. The Scott in the alley’s name was Joseph, an ironmonger, who died in 1831. His shop was at 122, the front house. What it became after his death is
unknown; the first reference to the beerhouse in 1859, when Joseph Cossens was selling it, as an established pub called the ‘Quart Pot’, together with a smith’s shop and two cottages in the alley. Until 1837 the Quart Pot name had been used for a much more prestigious Inn in Church Street, next to the Methodist Church. Joseph Cossens was a wine merchant and a partner in the distillery on what is now the Black Bear’s garden. The property took until 1864 to sell. It was now described as the ‘former Quart Pot’, and occupied by Henry Butt as a house. Daniel Chandler, a maltster, bought it for £160. It returned to being a

over the workshop in the alley and installed a kiln for firing clay pipes, to the great annoyance of the neighbours. He kept the Brewers Arms until 1876, when he went bankrupt and his furniture was sold off. The pub was taken over by Henry Jenkins, and after a quiet five years transferred to Samuel Evans. Samuel Evans’ tenure was short and tempestuous. The pub became the haunt of ‘ladies of ill repute’. Sophia Hawker and Eliza Hampton were convicted of passing a counterfeit sovereign and a few months later Evans was fined £5 for allowing girls of bad character to habitually use his premises. This was the beginning of the end. The pub was up for sale again in October 1882, now in the occupation of Walter Heath
Its licence was withdrawn in 1883 because it had again become a private house. The new owner was Charles Dowswell, a retired hairdresser. Its short life as a pub had ended.

ON MALVERN’S LOFTY HEIGHTS The Malvern Hills are one of my favourite spots for a brisk stroll, either on summer evenings or during the shorter days of winter - writes Jack B. Walker. Ideal for blowing away the Christmas cobwebs too!

STAY WITH US and make it a night to remember
This short route over high ground is exhilarating on clearer days, with magnificent views across the vale from the summit of Herefordshire Beacon. Park in the pay and display car park on the A449 opposite the Malvern Hills Hotel. Leave by the obvious route from the car park up the hill, forking right to ascend to British Camp’s 2000 year old earthworks (1). The path climbs over the ramparts to the summit of Herefordshire Beacon (2). To the west the view is towards Welsh hills, with Herefordshire’s famously undulating countryside in between. Eastwards the panorama stretches from the Lickey Hills in the north to the Cotswolds in the south. Walk in a southerly direction along the edge of the ramparts until you come to a path (3), which descends to an open space. Here there is a circular orientation
and direction structure which is worth checking out (4). Follow the path as directed to visit the curiosity known as Clutter’s (or Giant’s) Cave. This may once have been used as a shepherd’s shelter, as well as being connected to pagan beliefs. Other stories tell of a hermit living here in medieval times. Who knows? Retrace your steps to point four and follow the broad track as it skirts the slopes of the hill. As the main track curves around, bear right down a steep grassy path towards the reservoir below (5). If you don’t fancy tackling this descent in winter and prefer to return by a safer, higher route, the track you are on will take you back to the car park. On reaching the side of the reservoir, bear left, keeping the fence to your right. (6). When you reach the drive leading to the Reservoir House, turn left (7), and walk up
through the woods. Eventually the drive
emerges at the lower end of the car park.

Happy New Year Everyone!! Holidays are definitely back on the agenda for 2024 and after the dark days of the pandemic we in the travel industry are embracing the following ‘peak’ booking months with open arms. 2023 was a bumper year for our industry and we are expecting even better things from 2024, confidence in travel is back! Very few destinations have restrictions or forms now so it is all back to normal – and thank goodness!! January is traditionally one of the busiest months for holiday bookings and the adverts usually kick off on Boxing Day wetting our appetites and urging us to get booking early. With low deposits and free child places it is a great time to book – especially if you are a family. Free child places are always limited so it is always better to book early. As demand increases for the summer, prices will only go up. Plus the earlier you book the longer you have to save up. I’m predicting that Canada will continue to be one of our top destinations next year. September 2024 is already really busy over there – for me it is one of my favourite places and at that time of year the fall colours are amazing. Everyone talks about

- SHOW & TELL EVENING FOR SEVERN UNIT Tewkesbury based Severn Unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service is continuing with the current season of their popular “Show and Tell Evenings” when Unit members have the opportunity to bring interesting items to Unit night and explain all about them. Head of Unit Nic Price said “ Severn Unit member Guy Brady was the speaker during December and he brought along a most interesting array of memorabilia and photographs concerning his late Father Major Tony Brady who died in 2014. Major Brady served in the Irish Guards as a sniper in the Second World War then served in Korea and Cyprus and in Brixmis during the Cold War years. Brixmis was a military liaison mission which
operated behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany and Guy recalled what life was like for him and his two older Brothers living there with their parents during that time. The talk gave a fascinating insight into his Father’s experiences during that period and then afterwards how he became an archivist for the Irish Guards and made friends with a former enemy General Von Rosen who was able to provide a valuable
insight into German records from that time. Among other awards Major Brady was proud to be given the Legion d’Honneur which is the highest French Order of Merit to be awarded and Guy brought this along for members to see. He also produced a section of a German Tiger tank track his Father had recovered from a field in France. It was a very special and memorable evening”

to their waiting list. As well as groceries members are signposted to other services such as debt advice, benefits advice and housing advice. They also build up relationships and become a friendly face and listening ear each week. Priors Park Pantry met with Northway Parish Council to explore an option to open a Community Pantry within Northway. A community pantry is a food club where members pay a small fee each week in return for at least 10 items of ‘restockable’ groceries plus fresh veg, fruit, bread, milk etc. Unlike a food bank,
members are able to choose the items that they want. Its aim is to reduce food insecurity as well as food surplus as some of the donations are food from supermar-

kets that would otherwise be thrown away. Some of the Parish Councillors visited the pantry at Priors Park and were really impressed with the set up and es-
sential service this provided. The Parish Council cannot run such an operation themselves but felt that maybe volunteers would come forward who could. A group of local residents answered the call and with great support from the Priors Park Pantry and Feeding Gloucestershire, a Steering Committee was put together, trustees appointed and a treasurer found. Another group of volunteers came forward to run the Pantry. All the
volunteers live within Northway. But the big question remained - was there really a need within Northway. If a Pantry was started would there be enough of a take up? The cost of living crises has impacted everyone with rising fuel costs, mortgages, rent and the cost of food is at an all time high and we knew Priors Park Pantry had requests from Northway residents but would the investment needed to set up and sustain a food pantry be justified? The volunteers met with local schools, churches and community groups to see just how bad things were. The criteria was any family who were on a low income and struggling with food insecurity. From those initial meetings eight families came forward to request membership - and many more potential members were identified. The project decided to push ahead. But the pressing problem now was where to house the pantry. There was no suitable space within the Community Hub or local church so the Parish Council offered to house a new building within the Community Hub grounds if funding could be found to purchase the building. The Parish Council provided £5,000 towards

the cost, Infinity Ltd, a local business donated £2,000 and Cotteswold Dairy donated £500. Johnson’s Garden Rooms, based at the back of Dobbies Garden Centre were approached and they kindly generously provided a large donation to enable the purchase and installation of a garden room. Te w k e s b u r y Borough Council awarded a £5,000 grant to kit out the new pantry. This has enabled the purchase of a fridge, freezer, shelving, storage and equipment as well as suitable hygiene training for the volunteers, insurance, sum up payment system and some start up stock. Local Businesses have helped as well with Bolt Electrical doing the com-
plete electrical installation free of charge and Tewkesbury Blinds will provide the door blinds
free. Local residents, schools and Northway Community Volunteers have also donated stock.
Local supermarkets have been asked to support and Morrisons and the Spar shop at Bredon have all promised to donate surplus food. Cotteswold Dairy will donate milk. We hope more will pledge to donate as the project launches. Thanks to an amazing community effort Northway Pantry is almost ready to officially launch. 7 families have already received some donations. We are hoping to be fully up and running before Christmas with the aim of helping 20 local families. The Pantry will be open two days a week to begin with. Wednesday 6th December saw the first ever meeting of Tewkesbury Book Club. The official launch night was attended by over 30 enthusiastic book lovers and hosted by Sophie Berrill and Laura Pearson, the creators of the book club. Following a post on Tewkesbury Open Noticeboard by a local resident looking to join a book club, Sophie and Laura couldn’t help but spot there was a need for

This proved a difficult task to find a venue, date and time that would suit as many new members as possible. A task they completed with success. The launch night had

Antony opened the honest talk stating he didn’t read his first book until he was in his 20’s! Book
club members all received a signed copy of Antony’s first ever published book The Black Path, donated by him to be the first book for the club to read and discuss. Antony’s talk was so enjoyed by the members that he has been asked to join them again in the future, especially after he mentioned he will be writing a book based in Tewkesbury in the next couple of years! Sophie and Laura closed the evening by expressing that the book club is for everyone. With such a large growing number of members they are keen for the group to help find venues, host events and decide genres. Books can also be recommended and discussed on the social media platform therefore

Andy Fogden, Super Fundraiser for the RNLI Newtown resident, Andy Fogden has been supporting the RNLI for 42 years, raising a staggering £46,662 through sales, on behalf of the Charity. Andy’s interest started when he lived in Chichester and followed the rescues of the local lifeboat, and he decided to join the local committee, when he moved to Tewkesbury in 1984. During his time as Souvenir Secretary, initially with the Tewkesbury Branch and then from 2015 for the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Branch, he achieved sales to the value of £46,662.
He organised a series of Street and Store Collections during his involvement with both Branches. He first participated in the RNLI’s new Betty’s 5p Pots campaign from November 2019 and, to date, has raised £1,144. He hopes to continue with this involvement. Andy, also a volunteer on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, has received recognition from the RNLI for his efforts and has been awarded, the Long Service Award and the Bar to the Gold Badge amongst many others. We wish him well.
