CONSTRUCTION STARTS AT OUTLET CENTRE Construction has begun on a new flagship Dobbies Garden Centre at Cotswolds Designer Outlet, a premium retail and leisure destination being developed by Robert Hitchins near Tewkesbury. Cotswolds Designer Outlet is a 180-acre mixed-use scheme located on Junction 9 of the M5, bordering the A46 trunk road and adjacent to Tewkesbury. When complete, it is expected to be a major draw in an area that benefits from a catchment that includes Bristol and Birmingham as well as the millions of tourists visiting the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty each year. When finished this autumn, the 74,000 sq ft

Dobbies Garden Centre will be the largest in South West England and is expected to serve more than 750,000 customers each year. Dobbies will serve as the leisure anchor for the Cotswolds Designer Outlet, featuring plants and houseplants, gardening accessories and products, outdoor living, pets, gifting and toys, as well as a cookshop, home décor, and a 10,000 sq ft restaurant. The first phase of the premium retail destination will provide 75 units

Construction underway at Dobbies across 140,000 sq ft, alongside leisure facilities and landscaped areas. Phase two will bring the total footprint to 90 units across 181,000 sq ft. The shopping destination, which is taking shape along-

FIRST LAKEFEST HEADLINERS ANNOUNCED The Manic Street Preachers, UB40 and Leftfield have been announced as headline acts at Lakefest 2022 – the festival’s tenth anniversary event – which will once again take place in Eastnor Deer Park from August 11th-14th. Organisers of Herefordshire’s familyfriendly festival have also revealed that the main stage line-up will include Reef, Louise Redknapp, The Feeling, The Reytons and The Mighty VU. This novel unearthed and republished in Germany during 2018 is now available with an English translation, and out in paperback. It focuses on the efforts of Otto Silberman after the violence of Kristallnacht in November 1938, and him trying to escape the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime. This is not a violent read, but insightful of the sudden change to many Jewish lives after these events, even if the warning signs had been there for residents to see. The author Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz was of Jewish origin who had already emigrated to study abroad and the bibliographic details contained in this book are worth reading; the author's short life, itself eventful, and sad.

The story of Otto Silberman and his Christian wife, Elfriede, centers on how Otto escapes their flat when the Authorities knock on his door whilst he is discussing a business deal. He leaves via the rear exit, and is then, for the rest of the story on the move - "The Passenger" of the title. Their son, Eduard, is in Paris and is trying to obtain visas for his parents, but much to his father's chagrin, not seemingly making any progress. During the story there are a few phone conversations between the two. The reader is also witness to the negotiations that Otto does with his WW1 wartime friend and now work colleague, Becker, who like other acquaintances takes advantage of Otto's predicament to fleece him. It is however these auxiliary parts of the story that make

Otto's tale more interesting and enlightening, as without them it would be very much his itinerant life hopping on and off trains. However the main structure of this unusual book is those journeys, and Otto's travels to and fro from Berlin, the city where he started and returns to as each avenue of escape becomes blocked. He encounters a strange mixture of fellow travellers, many like him equally wary of their companions. The author provides us with some insight on how those days, over 80 years ago must have been, the terror, the uncertainty, and the sheer uprooting from what had beforehand been a comfortable family life in a country that had been so dramatically radicalised over the previous ten years. This has been a quiet bestseller, the history of the novel's republication, and of the author's short life creating interest. It has become justifiably, a word of mouth recommendation. A readable fictionalised account of a period of European history that should not be forgotten.

Winter Cheers at 26th Ales Festival The Watson Hall is all set for a winter warmer next host Tewkesbury’s 26th Winter Ales Festival. Organised by Tewkesbury CAMRA, the event will take place from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th February. Over 75 local ales will be available to sample, as well as ciders and perries. Locally sourced food will also be on offer. Thursday evening (7pm to 11pm) is for to all. MEDIEVAL DATES FOR 2022 Tewkesbury’s Medieval Festival is set to return this year, as long as regulations and health guidelines allow. The battle re-enactment is set for the weekend of 9th/10th July, and will once again be the largest free Medieval Festival of its kind in Europe. The Battle of Tewkesbury took place in May 1471, and was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses. As well as a full scale recreation of the battle, there will be a medieval market, living history camp, activities and entertainment.

TEWKESBURY RAISES OVER £30,000 IN 2021 POPPY APPEAL Heartfelt thanks go out to the people of Tewkesbury, with a special thank you to the volunteers, shops, pubs, clubs, schools, associations and cadets who all made a fantastic contribution this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The 2019-2020 Tewkesbury & District Cribbage League was finally finished in November 2021, after closing down in March 2020 due to Covid and not restarting until October this year. The Gardeners Arms (Alderton) increased their lead in the League, whilst the British Legion/ Berkeley Arms just managed to retain the Runners Up spot despite only winning one of their last four matches. The Evan Akers (which is based on certain table scores) was won by the Anchor 1774 due to their extended lead when play was stopped due to Covid, since in their last three matches, they lost one and had to concede the other two matches due to insufficient players. Bredon FC strong finish saw them gain and maintain second spot with two wins out of their final three matches. The 2021-22 Season started in

Medieval Barn to become community meeting place One of Tewkesbury’s best kept secrets is a Medieval Barn, located to the rear of the Berkeley Arms in Church Street. The Barn dates back to the 1400’s, carpenters marks in the ancient woodwork, correspond to others found in Gloucestershires oldest pub, the Olde Black Bear indicating that the age of the two buildings are

An excellent turnout at the Town Hall of people passionate about improving our underfunded yet beautiful town. A major discussion took place about the merits of pedestrianisation of the high st or a one-way system. In the next Tewkesbury Direct there will be a full article on the outcomes and options before submission to the County. The New River Regatta is scheduled for 24/25 September 2022 and is well supported by all river users. Happy New Year Everyone Now the Christmas festivities are over many of us will be thinking ahead and starting to plan our holidays. For some this will be their first time going abroad for a couple of years. Most of us have been vaccinated now and we are definitely seeing a new confidence and a thirst for holidays and a longing to begin exploring again. So, where to go next year? We have seen a surge in bookings to Iceland, especially for the Northern Lights and Lapland. The Indian Ocean and the Caribbean are both really popular too along with Greece, Cyprus and Spain. I was lucky and travelled to Rhodes in September this year. The trip was postponed from the previous year so I had waited a long time for it - in fact I felt quite emotional on the jour-

ney from the airport to our hotel, especially when we turned the corner and Lindos and the Acropolis were laid out in front of us in all their splendour. It really hit me how much I had missed travelling. Yes the forms and tests are a faff and an additional expense but it really was worth it. History and geography at Probus Club In recent weeks, Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have been entertained, educated and informed by some excellent speakers principally covering different aspects of history and geography.

Dr. Gillian White is an eminent historian and her talk was about Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth and the Kenilworth Entertainment of 1575, which sounds as if it might have been a rather dry historical subject, but nothing could be further from the truth. Dr White is a brilliant speaker with pin-sharp diction and a vocal delivery that would put a Shakespearean actor to shame. She spoke without notes and illustrated her talk in great detail which captivated the audience for the whole of the morning. The following week we had another history lesson going further back in time when Redditch military historian Ron Gallivan answered the question “Why did the Romans leave Britain in 410 AD”? Ron’s talk was delivered with humour and we learnt so much about present day concepts which were derived from when the Romans occupied Britain. From history to geography. One of our own members, John McGhee took us on a guided tour of Syria when he and his wife visited very shortly before the civil war. John showed us many of the historic buildings and structures, many of which sadly have now been destroyed. Our second delv-

ing into history was much nearer to home when John Dixon, Life President of the Tewkesbury Historical Society gave us a fascinating insight into old Tewkesbury. He described how Tewkesbury had a thriving industry making stockings and he showed us where some of the factories were located and showed some incredible photographs, like the scene outside the old railway station on the High Street with a steam locomotive actually crossing the road even though it

was illegal to do so. Personally I will never pass the Tewkesbury ambulance station without thinking of the old factory that once stood there! Firmfix doing their bit for the environment The whole world is focusing more and more of late on doing the best for the environment and with many countries making pledges recently at COP26 in Glasgow for how they are going to reduce emissions and move toward carbon-neutral, we felt it was a great time to tell you about how we do our bit here at Firmfix to help improve the environment Here at Firmfix energy efficiency is our highest priority along with supplying A+ energy rated window, door and conservatory frames, we also do our part to help with recycling especially when dealing with UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride). All existing uPVC frames are removed, returned to our factory in Tewkesbury and then sent off to be recycled and are then used to manufacture new frame profiles. The profile external faces are made from brand new UPVC which means the frames will look clean and fresh from the fabricator’s bench with the internal chambers all made up from recycled UPVC. This doesn’t compromise the strength, energy efficiency or look but maintains our goal to help as much as we can with

recycling and being sustainable. The uPVC frames have a life expectancy of decades and they can be recycled up to 10 times over giving them a life span of 100’s of years as well as being A+ rated and low u-values. Having new frames fitted will also help with keeping the energy bills low as well as upgrading the aesthetics of your property whilst making your home more energy-efficient.

Incredible response to GWR bridge appeal An appeal to raise £200,000 to repair a major road bridge on the Gloucestershire Warwickshireshire has been achieved within four weeks of its launch. This is an astonishing response to the appeal which was launched less than a month ago and everyone on the volunteer-run railway is deeply grateful for every single donation, whether £10 or £10,000 (as donations were between those extremes). This means that the remedial work on the bridge will start as soon as the railway closes following the post-Christmas trains which are running between Broadway and Winchcombe, daily from 27 December-3rd March. The GWSR reopens for its 2022 season in March. ‘Bridge 8’ carries the busy B4632 (formerly A46) road over the railway near Stanton at an angle. It has been subject to traffic control and speed restriction for a considerable time to reduce the risk of further damage to the bridge which has over many years been weakened by corrosion. Explains Glyn Cornish, Chairman of GWRT: “The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) was required to take on responsibility for the 46 bridges and 51 culverts that cross the railway as a condition of purchasing the line 40 years ago. “ U n f o r t u n a t e l y, when services including water and gas were laid over Bridge

8 long before we acquired the railway, we believe the waterproof decking was damaged, allowing water to seep through. Gradually, this has corroded the structural steelwork beneath the road surface. “Although repairs

were carried out by us some years ago, examination of the bridge has shown that corrosion has continued. Remedial works have been undertaken to dry the structure, but the damage was done and needs to be repaired.”

A New Venture for Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Cotswold Riding for the Disabled are proud to announce the opening of our first High St shop at 35 High St Tewkesbury. Not only is this a first for us but is also the first Riding for the Disabled High St shop in the UK! This shop complements our other shop which is housed in Longleven’s Co-operative community space. We are enormously grateful to Midcounties Co- Operative for working with us in this unique collaboration. Our shop is an Aladdin’s cave of pre-loved clothing especially Country and Equestrian wear. Preloved clothing is sustainable environmentally friendly fashion. Why not challenge friends and family to a ‘second-hand’ Santa Christmas! The Grand opening took place at 11am on Saturday 4th December and was conducted by Edward Gillespie OBE- Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. Laurence Robertson MP and Joanne Raywood, Mayor of Tewkesbury, were also guests of honour. Many local residents popped in to bag a bargain! We always need donations of good quality second hand clothing, especially Country and Equestrian wear. We are also looking for volunteers to help us run the shop. Have you ever heard Brits described as being bad at languages? Explain this then: we buy beer in pints, but whisky in ml; we run in km but walk in miles; babies are weighed in lb, but flour is kg and fence posts are a mixture of the two. Gardeners go further by using common names and scientific names for plants. Note that I didn’t use the term Latin because scientific names aren’t necessarily Latin. Scientific names are our jargon. They make our world exclusive and harder to access which is probably not always a good thing. Weirdly, they are often used as a measure to identify good gardeners against bad. On the flip side, they have their uses. Early in my career it was explained to me that anyone could identify a load of weeds, but you’d

be paid more if you could identify a sward with Bellis perennis. On a field trip to France, I was able to talk plants with an Italian scientist though we had no common language except scientific names. I’ve advised Albanian restauTim Hoskins rant owners which weeds they can eat in their gardens, ordered plants from Belgian and Dutch nurseries and identified disease and pest weaknesses and worked out better husbandry methods from scientific papers. The downside to common names is that one species can have many. They are also frequently invented for marketing purposes (houseplants and edibles are notorious for it). I’m afraid I’m also guilty of this. If a vegetable seems too exotic and nobody wants to eat what I’ve grown, I often invent a more accessible name for it and it quickly gets used with enthusiasm. Commercially invented common names make identifying plants and their care regime difficult, but each species has one scientific name… sort of. It’s not completely straightforward because scientific names can change, are sometimes disputed and may have geographical variations. Cultivars also muddy the waters, and some plants don’t have a true scientific name because they’ve been hybridised so extensively. So, I’m bilingual, although I still feel uncomfortable with beer being sold in 500ml bottles, rather than pints.

LATEST ALLEYCAT ARTWORK REVEALED Stocking making was once a major industry in Tewkesbury, writes Bill Adie. Although around the town there are architectural reminders of the trade in the form of small knitters’ cottages in, for example, St Mary’s Lane and, on a larger scale, the former Stocking Factory, now North East Terrace (Chimney Pot Row), there has been no memorial to the trade. Until now. In December, Project Alleycat unveiled its latest artwork, Stocking Knitting by Maxine Williams, a mural depicting a family at work in the 19th century in Stephens’ Alley. Knitting was a family activity; men would operate the heavy knitting frame, but women and children would be involved in spinning cotton or wool, and finishing the hosiery. Inevitably, there is a cat or two. Stephens’ Alley was once dedicated to stocking production. The front house on the High St was the home and base of the master hosier, in the 1840s a Mr. Stephens, who owned the alley behind. The trade worked on piecework, knitters were paid by the article supplied to the hosier, but as the hosier owned not only their cottages, but also the frames and supplied the raw material, the knitters were left with relatively little after rents had been paid. The knitting industry in Tewkesbury declined in the second half of the 19th century, as the town could not compete with factories in Nottingham and elsewhere. Project Alleycat is a community group dedicated to promoting interest in, and revitalizing the alleys of Tewkesbury. It has commissioned several art-

Free Music Festival planned for July Tewkesbury Town Centre will be alive with music this July, thanks to a free three day festival. Tewkesbury Live, planned by Tewkesbury Town Council, will take place in venues around the town. Pubs will host and array of live bands and acts across the three days and The Watson Hall and Town Hall will be holding family activities such as dance/singing workshops and performances. World wide search ends in Winchcombe Proprietors of Autospares, in Barton Street, Mel and Mark Rose, tied the knot at Tewkesbury’s Puckrup hall in October. The couple decided that the wedding transport of choice would be a Yamaha RD 500 motorcycle, a track winning 2 stroke GP bike from the 1980s. The search started on the internet, it became clear that it was

a difficult machine to find. Eventually an example was located in Stuttgart, looking as if it needed quite a lot of work to put it in order. Whilst deciding whether Mark should travel to Germany, amazingly, a feed

came through Facebook that a good example had come up was available for use, in Winchcombe. The happy couple were delighted to have the Yamaha on their happy day and no doubt rode off into the sunset.

A Change in Direction for Local Probus Club Following the Coronavirus outbreak last year, Longdon District Probus Club carried on with a programme of talks using Zoom. Although this was better than nothing, on-line meetings lacked the social contact that is so important to the Club. The easing of restrictions plus vaccinations meant that the Club could resume its weekly meetings. However, this was an opportunity to consider a new venue, one that would, perhaps, be more appropriate for the Club. Fortunately, the Ann Townend Hall at Church End (near Twyning) provides all the facilities that are required, including spacious seating, well-equipped kitchen, projector screen and so on. A variety of talks and presentations have already taken place at the new venue. One meeting featured a ‘Show & Tell’ which involved members taking an object to the meeting and briefly talking about it. A ‘Show & Tell’ was something new for the Club and it went very well. One member, John Westcott, brought along a radio-controlled model

boat to show the meeting – see photograph. John has spent many hours building this

much-missed social events. If you would like to join the Club, or

Tewkesbury Sea Cadets are delighted to announce the opening of their new galley by Tewkesbury Mayor last month. The new galley has been created by knocking the existing small galley through to the little used wardroom to create a big space for cookery lessons, unit entertainment and catering during Sea Cadet courses. With 4 ovens including a big range cooker and an American fridge freezer, up to 10 cadets will be able to comfortably work in the new space. The main hall and galley are also available for hire when not in use by the Sea Cadets. For many years, this has been one of my favourite strolls, which visits two of the Cotswolds’ best kept secrets - the twin villages of Laverton and Buckland. It’s beautiful at any time of year too (the photos shown here were taken in mid-summer, by the way!) Neither village is on a ‘through route’ and as there are no inns or major attractions, they are well off the tourist trail.

Although the route is fairly easy going, some of the paths are also bridleways - so they can be muddy at this time of year. Park carefully in Laverton village, which is off the B4632 Toddington to Broadway road. At the top of the village, where lanes meet and there is a triangle of grass in the road, look for a path on the left which leads past

at the side of the rectory, (photo right) and onwards to Broadway if you are feeling particularly energetic! Further along the street, on the right, is the fascinating galleried parish church, which serves both villages. Behind this is Buckland Manor, now an upmarket hotel. As the street bears left to ascend the hill, walk ahead on to a track (4)

coming down from the Cotswolds (6). Turn right and follow the lane back down into Laverton Village. The nearest refreshment facilties are in Broadway, a little over two miles from Buckland.

HAVE YOUR SAY: M5 JUNCTION 10 IMPROVEMENT A public consultation is running until Tuesday 15th February, to allow members of the public to have their say on future proposals for a transport scheme around the M5 Junction 10. Proposals under discussion include improvements to junction 10 itself, a new road linking the junction to West Cheltenham, and the widening of the A4019 Tewkesbury Road. Improvements are also proposed for the A38/A4019 junction at Coombe Hill. The council says the scheme will improve access to and from the motorway northbound and southbound, supporting growth plans both locally and throughout Gloucestershire, as well as helping to solve long-standing traffic and travel issues.
