by Diane Setterfield Paperback, £8.99 If the author's name rings a bell with our readers it will be due to her first book "The Thirteenth Tale" a superb debut. This, her third novel, deserves to be as big a success. Whilst there are a great group of characters within the story, it is the River Thames which has a starring role as the ever present waters are the background of this slightly eerie fable based beside the river, south of Lechlade, but venturing down to Oxford, and upstream as far as Cricklade. Storytelling is one of the pastimes in "The Swan" the riverside inn at Radcot, the ailing landlord the star performer; it is the winter solstice when events, that will engulf the neighbourhood for a year, begin as a wounded man carries in an apparently drowned child. The local nurse, Rita is urgently summoned, and she cares for the stranger, but miraculously when holding the child, the girl recovers. This produces good ongoing material for the pubs raconteurs. Who is the child? Is it Amelia Vaughan, the lost daughter from the upstream manor, Buscot Lodge, kidnapped some two years earlier and never seen again? Later it evolves that it could be Alice, the granddaughter of Robert and Bess Armstrong from the farm up at Kelmscott. There is a third possible claimant Lily White, a young widow who lives in Basketman's Cottage close by the river. She is the housekeeper at the parsonage who says the girl, is her sister Ann, however unlikely that seems. Lily, her past, and pres-

The whole story covers a year in their lives with Rita becoming ever closer to the stranger, an Oxford photographer, Henry Daunt. The girl is claimed by the Vaughans, grieving Helena convinced it is her lost daughter escaped from the gypsies, her husband uncertain, but accepting this unlikelihood for his wife's well being. If this sets up the outline to the events of the year, the reader can discover what happens as each season and each solstice produces twists and turns during which a myriad of characters fill the pages from boatmen to watercress pickers, to the Bliss family who own The Swan. There are much loved pigs, illicit distilleries, fun fairs and some great detail on early photography, and of Daunt's boat Collodion, a floating darkroom. The river in all it's glory ever present, ever threatening. The writing in the novel shows the author's skill with words, displaying she is a qualified raconteur herself, whose descriptions bring the riverside to life; the beauty and the dangers of the water so elegantly portrayed. HISTORY MATTERS with John Dixon
MORE THAN JUST BRICKS AND MORTAR Recently I looked at the facade of 69-70 Church Street which is undergoing restoration for a new Indian Restaurant, writes John Dixon. When I spotted the revelation of the sign for Luigi’s restaurant (A) which I just fondly remember – I think! Since 1982, it has been a Tandoori Restaurant, firstly Munira (B) and recently the late lamented Nirala which closed earlier this year. Inevitably I wanted to know more about the buildings history. Before 1977 it had been two separate dwellings 69 & 70 but in that year the first floor was knocked through to form the delightfully named “Gino and Edith” hairdresser (C) where a Kay Smalley worked. There must be an interesting back history here! From 1957-1966 no. 69 was the "Copper Kettle" restaurant (D) but before that it was a home to the Sollis family which suffered so much sorrow. In 1918 daughter Kathleen died of the ‘flu, whilst serving at Tredington Hospital as a
war worker – but her name was omitted from the war memorial until 2018. Her sister Kathleen also died in 1935 at the same hospital and of the same cause but it was described by the newspaper headline as a “tragic death”. The next year, however, brother Alec, an RAF Sgt-Pilot, was the only survivor from a “mid-air collision” near Singapore. The two buildings are 18thC listed frontages but the late Historian Brian Linnell revealed that they could be medieval behind that façade - in 1963 a 16th century cottage at rear was demolished – and they uncovered three wells. Let us hope the modern restorer’s of the building can confirm this - by discovering medieval “wattle and daub”. The new restaurant, to be called Mez Baan, will have around 80 covers and offer fine Indian dining. It is expected to open mid-January 2020, and we send our best wishes for the success of this new venture.

The New Year brings further expansion for Clearway Doors & Windows One of Gloucestershire’s most successful door and window companies has doubled its manufacturing facility in Cheltenham, to meet growing demand for its products. Cheltenham-based Clearway, which celebrates its thirty seventh anniversary this year, fabricates and installs a range of aluminium doors, sash and casement windows, secondary glazing, patio, French and bi-fold doors as well as roof lights and lanterns. Established in 1983, Clearway Doors and Windows initially focussed on manufacturing and installing their products in the commercial sector. In 2013 the domestic sector represented just five percent of the company’s turnover - seven years later it stands at over 40% - and sales continue to increase in both market areas. To meet growing demand, Clearway has acquired the lease of a unit adjacent to its existing factory at MacKenzie Way, and increased its manufacturing capacity to 958sq m (10,314 sq ft). The additional space will also enable the eventual relocation of its sister company Designex
Clearway’s recently extended factory in Cheltenham Cabinets, which offers a range of bespoke display solutions for museums, showrooms, shops and specialist collectors. Clearway’s Managing Director is Jeremy Phillips, who was born and grew up in Kemerton. “The company has grown considerably over the past six years from a staff of 19 to over 30,” said Jeremy. “This growth has been necessary to cope with increased demand. For the future, we will continue to invest in staff, customer satisfaction and product devel-

CO2&U - IDEAS TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT Recently a small group in Tewkesbury has been following the “Footpaths” community carbon reduction course. The 7 session course showed us how small actions by individuals can contribute to CO2 reduction. Some ideas are easy and free and will even save you money; some are more costly and more difficult to embrace but to alleviate the current climate crisis we all have to do whatever we can. We want to share these ideas with the Tewkesbury community so that we can all work together to reduce our carbon footprint. We’re going to publish a few ideas each month in Tewkesbury Direct and hope you’ll give them a go and make them part of your lifestyle.
Here are a few ideas to get you started. Do you really need it? When you think about buying something new consider whether you actually need it. Find alternatives to single use plastics. Shower gel, shampoo and liquid soap can all be replaced by bars or get your empty bottles refilled (there are a number of shops now doing this). Reduce use of your car: Could you walk, cycle, car share or use public transport for some of your journeys?

SEVERN UNIT MVS KEEPS NAVIGATION CLEAR After all the rain that fell since September the River Avon has been almost continuously in flood for many weeks. Inevitably a great deal of debris has been washed down the river including logs and whole trees which have piled up around King John’s Bridge. Head of Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service Nic Price said “The Unit has been out in our boats on a number of occasions to try and at least keep the main navigation arch free of the debris to ensure safe navigation which is very important.” He added “May I take
this opportunity to wish all our friends and supporters around the river a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Unit is looking forward to working with
the Avon Navigation Trust and playing their part at the Big Weekend next year which should be bigger and more exciting than ever with fun for all the family.”

I was thrilled when Peter Finnigan found this photograph of his maternal grandfather, Charles Mellor, writes John Dixon. THEN (above): obviously from World War One and he is leading his horse and cart on the recently built Station Road to the Railway Station (now in the undergrowth behind Morrison’s). He was a furniture remover who became a dealer, property owner and Town Councillor - but what was the occasion? He was smartly dressed and he attracted the attention of the area’s children as he was guarded by marching soldiers. The houses in the background were newly developed estates - behind was Cotteswold Road and to the right is the then Cotteswold Place, built around 1900 by Collins & Godfrey for their skilled workers. They provided a higher standard of housing than usually provided for working men. As is evident, taking the same photograph NOW (right) is almost impossible – behind the wall is an almost impenetrable hedge and the cottages are screened by a housing estate built in the 1970s. Peter has only recently learned that his paternal grandfather, Arthur Cornelius Finnigan, was an volunteer orderly at the War Hospital in Mitton Station Road itself has changed little - although it is now a road almost to nowhere.

RESIDENT GULLS CAUSE HAVOC TO LOCAL BUSINESS After what seemed like weeks of relentless rain, it came to light that the resident seagulls that had setup roost at RED, Roberts Express Delivery, had caused unforeseen problems for the business. Water had been cascading over the side of the building, causing huge disruption to the day to day operation. Stefan Roberts, Owner and Director of RED, contacted Xtreme Maintenance to survey his building to find the best solution. Mark Albutt, Owner of Xtreme Maintenance, met with Mr Roberts and established that the problem was a result of the gulls nesting in the gutter trays, and the waste they cause whilst rearing their young. Xtreme Maintenance use the latest high power vacuum technology, which means there is no need for expensive scaffolding or need of high ladders, and feet remain safely on the ground preventing any health and safety issues.
With remote camera operation, Xtreme Maintenance can see exactly what is causing the problem, gutters are cleaned safely, the result being a quicker and more cost effective service for the customer. For consideration for the gulls and their young, works were held off until the birds migrated from the building, so not to cause any unnecessary distress. RED, with guttering like new, Mr Roberts said “business can now get back to normal operation, a huge thank you to Xtreme Maintenance for a professional service”.

ROSES 2020 Following the chaos of 14000 people through the theatre for the panto season, it is time for our attentions to turn to the New Year. Our year starts with a heavy film programme. There are two reasons for this, one is to give our technical crew some essential down time after working nonstop on panto for seven weeks, and secondly because most of the Oscar and BAFTA nominated films can be scheduled. Therefore, while we may not have the massive amount of customers the panto brings it will still be very busy. Films to look out for this year are the Martin Scorsese epic The Irishman, Scarlett

Volunteers at Tewkesbury museum have been restoring the superb models of Tewkesbury Mop fair, originally built by AE Salt of Southampton. The working models have had a permanent display constructed, that’ll includes a handpainted backdrop in low relief, of the shops and buildings of Tewkesbury town centre. The diorama is the handiwork of volunteer Cameron Lawrence and portrays the buildings as they would have been in the mid 20th Century. The attention to detail is intricate and includes leaning gables, the high
street clock and the cross. This will be a must see permanent
exhibit and will be a great attraction for visitors to the town.

JOHN COGHLAN’S QUO SET FOR WATSON HALL SHOW Original Status Quo drummer John Coghlan, with his great band, is bringing a night of vintage rock to Tewkesbury’s Watson Hall next month. On Saturday 29th February, John will be playing material from the period he performed with Status Quo, 1962 1981. For fans and critics alike, this time is often regarded as Quo’s “Classic” period. John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly formed band ‘The Spectres’ in 1962. The group went through a
series of name changes, including Traffic Jam, before becoming Status Quo in the late 60s when Rick Parfitt also joined the line-up. A string of chart-topping hits followed such as ‘Caroline’ and ‘Whatever You Want.’ Tewkesbury Town Mayor, Terry Walker, said: “As a young man I listened to Status Quo and still enjoy their timeless music.

Ingredients: 3 eggs • 6ozs. butter • 9ozs. flour • 1 gill milk 1.5ozs. currants • 1.5ozs. sultanas Half teaspoonful ground ginger 1 tablespoonful treacle • Half oz ground almonds 1.25 teaspoonsful baking powder 1 teaspoonful ground cinnamon Grease three sandwich tins measuring 7 inches, beat sugar and butter to a cream, add each egg separately, lastly add flour and milk to moisten. Divide mixture into three portions, place two portions into two tins; to the third, add the spices, fruit and treacle, place into the third tin. Bake in a fairly hot oven about 20 minutes, allowing a little longer for the dark layer. When cold, sandwich the three together with three dessertspoonsful of apricot jam and half oz of ground almonds, well mixed.

STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
EPIPHONE SHERATON Epaminodonas Stathopoulos (nicknamed Epi) launched the Epiphone Banjo Company in New York in 1928 and later that year added guitars to his product line, writes Paul Thomas. Epi had inherited the business from his father, a Greek luthier who had emigrated to the United States in 1903. Highly regarded for a wide range of stringed instruments, Epiphone began to unravel after Epi passed away in 1943 when the company came under the control of his brothers. In 1951, a four-month long strike ended with the company’s relocation to Philadelphia. The brothers limped along for a few more years before Gibson swooped in 1957, bought up Epiphone and relocated the brand to their headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The first part of the Epiphone story was complete. Building instruments in the factory next door to the Gibson brand, Epiphone developed two distinct product lines, a distinction which continues to this day. The first product line was responsible for budget-conscious versions of established Gibson models, usually solid bodies and often just as good as the originals but badged ‘Epiphone’. The second product line consisted of brandnew, original models, usually semi-acoustics. These original designs included two iconic models – Sheraton and Casino. Of these two models, the Casino is, perhaps, the more famous. The Beatles’ and, in particular, John Lennon’s regular use of the model which featured in the famous ‘rooftop concert’ footage made sure of that. However, the Sheraton is probably the better guitar of the two. In 1958, when Epiphone began to expand its line of semi-hollow guitars, they reworked their old Century archtop into a thinline electric fitted with a single P-90 pick-up. This was followed by the introduction of a twin-pickup, double-cut thinline semi-hollow body, the Sheraton. The Sheraton shared the same body as Gibson’s ES-335, ES345, and ES-355 models. It featured the same double rounded horns and was fitted with a set glued-in neck, in accordance with Gibson's standard practice. Distinguishing characteristics of the Sheraton included its multiple body binding (like that of its top of the line Gibson cousin, the ES-355); its Frequensator tail piece; and its headstock and fretboard inlays. Unlike any of the semihollow bodies in the Gibson line, the Sheraton's headstock featured Epiphone's traditional fancy vine (or "tree of life") inlay on its headstock, while its fretboard featured a block and triangle (or "V") inlay of mother-of-pearl and abalone, as well as binding on the fretboard's surface, inset slightly from the outer edges. Manufacture of the Sheraton has moved over the years from USA to Japan, then to Korea and more recently to China. The guitar has also picked up a stop tail bridge along the way as well as a new name (Sheraton II). However, throughout this time, build quality has remained extremely high and the Sheraton continues to give Gibson’s iconic 335 a real run for its money. Organised by Bredon School, this national competition was run in partnership with the Independent Schools Association and Redpoint Climbing Centre. The inaugural event took place last year with 63 pupils and has more than doubled in size this year to 136 pupil participants from 28 different schools, signifying the fast growing popularity of the sport. Pupils aged from 15 to 18 years old took part in a range of different climbing challenges including bouldering, top rope and lead climbing. Headmaster of Bredon School, Mr Nick Oldham, commented: “It is so rewarding to see such excitement surrounding this event; at Bredon School, climbing is one of the many nontraditional sports we offer and I cannot wait to see how this event develops for next year.” The excitement around climbing as a sport has been growing steadily in recent years

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE By Stephanie Jepson of Courtney World Travel We’ve come out of the Christmas festivities and straight into the holiday booking season. The months between Christmas and Spring are cold and dark so there is nothing nicer than having a holiday to look forward to, whether it is in this country or abroad. The Canary Islands are proving very popular at the moment as they are only a 4 hour hop away, perfect for those who do not want a long flight. Further afield the weather in the Caribbean is perfect at this time of year, it’s about 26 degrees there at the moment. At the other end of the scale, the ski season is now well under way. Jane our ski specialist has skied all over the world, here she talks about her favourite resort: One of my favourite places to ski is Flaine in the French Alps. It is somewhere we have skied as a family for many years and where we first took our son skiing. He was just 6 years old and I always remember the look of sheer amazement on his face on seeing snow on such a grand scale. As with most children he had no fear and took to skiing like a duck to
water. He has been a keen skier ever since. He was helped by the fantastic ski schools there. Flaine is a Friendly and family orientated resort and offers a range of accommodation most of which is just a short hop from the slopes.

Sticking with the cold theme, my ‘little gem’ this month is Abisko in Swedon, considered to be one of the best places to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) due to its clear skies and distance from light pollution. You can stay at the Abisko Mountain Station in the heart of Abisko National Park for 2 nights and then stay in the ICEHOTEL for 1 night before returning home. A truly once in a lifetime experience.

I am fully licenced to teach all three fitness programs. Zumba is a fitness class inspired by Latino beats. Newtown W.I. Newtown WI ended 2019 with a fun evening of ‘Christmas Capers’ and a bring and share supper. Paul and Liugi entertained us with their ukulele playing before trying to teach us to play, some better than others. We ended by singing a round of Frere Jacque before a few of our members donned grass skirts to do a hula dance. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, a great way to end 2019. News update from Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth Further to the Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth tree survey and plan to double the tree cover as part of the fight against climate breakdown. Trees are the ultimate carbon capture and storage machine. So Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth have taken practical action. Three saplings have been planted on a grassy verge at Wynyards Close, Tewkesbury with the residents approval. Two Rowan [Mountain Ash] and one Crab Apple were planted on 11th December. They are native species and sourced bare root from a local tree supplier [Tree Shop] near the Forest of Dean. Helen Carver is a resident of Wynyards Close and she will care for them to ensure they are successful at establishing. These three saplings are a small but significant practical action towards doubling tree cover. The next Friends of the Earth meeting is on Wednesday 22nd January at 7.30pm at the Roses Theatre Tewkesbury in the upstairs bar area. By Helen Carver

PTSD – a personal experience at Probus Club When John Macartney gave a talk to Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club in April 2019 it was a very interesting and sometimes amusing description of his life as a senior executive at British Leyland in the 60’s and 70’s. John returned recently to talk about a totally different subject matter – his personal experiences of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

We can all understand physical illnesses because we can see the effect these have on ourselves and our fellow human beings, but mental illness cannot be seen in the same way and significantly cannot be treated the same as a physical illness. Probably because the condition was first described as shell-shock as suffered by many soldiers in the First World War, most people consider PTSD as a military illness, but this is far from the case as John described in his talk. Many in the police, fire and rescue and ambulance services, hospital A&E staff and private individuals can suffer from PTSD after experi-
encing horrific situations. John has himself suffered from PTSD for some 25 years as a result of a specific incident in the very early days of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980. However he was not in the military but was working in the region as a civilian but was caught up in a situation that he described in shocking detail to our members. This experience was the trigger that caused John to start experiencing the mental illness of PTSD and how it came to control his health and his personal life and how the eventual therapies that he went through enabled him to finally come to terms
with the condition. John sought professional help from a psychologist who used various different Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT). John described how challenging these can be in trying to come to terms with PTSD. For instance therapists often use “talking therapies” where the patient is encouraged to talk to the therapist about the specific incident that triggered the condition. The patient is then asked to go away and write down and describe the incident in minute detail (itself a traumatic exercise). Perhaps the most challenging element of this therapy is when the patient returns to the therapist and is required to read their incident description out
loud to the therapist which, whilst clearly being an incredibly difficult thing to do, enables the patient to learn to face up to the stress and begin the long journey back to mental health. MITTON W.I. December and Christmas is nearly here so this month's meeting was party time. There was a wonderful array of foods, all provided by the members. There was also a little added extra provided by the committee - a rendition of The Lion and Albert was read and acted out by some very amateur thespians. We had a lot of fun doing it (don't know what the reviews will be!). The Christmas Quiz was, it was decided, far too easy this year so extra work required for next years. GOOD PAIN AND BAD PAIN There are many different types of pain and sometimes people split these into two camps. Good pain and bad pain. Pain is a sensation much like pressure, heat or touch. Although pain is present in order for us to establish if something is good for us or not, we ought not to label it good or bad. Pain is a sensation and an experience. All very well saying this when currently not in pain, but if you can understand that the brain is telling you that something is hurting, then understanding why that pain is there can help. If you put your hand on a recently boiled kettle it would no doubt hurt and you would remove your hand (please don’t try this, just imagine). However, many people will talk about “their usual pain”. Pain is not usual. It is telling something is not as it should be. There is indeed pain that we do not shy from that seems to help. If someone hits a trigger point in a muscle it will hurt and feel unpleasant, but if gentle pressure is applied to that trigger point to try and release the tension, this often feels uncom-

fortable but as if it is doing you good. You will not shy away from it. Before you label your pain good or bad, try to think about where it is, how you would describe it, are you ever without it? Then establish if it is something you can control by altering the way you behave, move or

“Homeland” by Walter Kempowski P/back @ £8.99 Some of our readers will remember this German author's name from his earlier book "All for Nothing" which I featured back in 2016. It has since been enjoyed by countless people, and many reading groups. “Homeland” shares, in part, a location of East Prussia, although this novel is not set during WW2, but does look back at events in that territory during 1945. The year is 1988, a year before the Berlin Wall came down, and when travel into Eastern Europe was not as easy as it is now. Jonathan Farbrizius [JF] is a journalist living in Hamburg, and we begin by experiencing him residing in that city. JF lives a strange life, his girlfriend Ulla occupies the front apartment, he the back and they in part cohabit. Their landlady a General's widow lives above, we get to meet her, but in Hamburg the characters are these two, plus Ulla's boss, and an old friend of JF, who runs an antiques business. JF is offered the opportunity to write an article in advance of the press launch of a new V8 car, the well paid offer entails him travelling to Poland where in 1945, as the Russian army advanced, he was born. He is initially unsure, delays mentioning it to Ulla, but eventually decides to go. We experience the flight out in an old LOT Russian airliner, then the welcome party, as obviously this is quite a prestigious event for Poland. JF has two colleagues he shares the journey with. An ex rally driver full of bravado and very much a macho man and their leader Frau Winkelvoss, who spends many hours recounting her life

history as they drive around the countryside, and we do get to know these two diverse characters. The main part of the book is a record of their journey creating the planned itinerary for the journalists. JF scripting a history as they go, and we experience a few of his more solitary excursions, as he comes to face his past. His father was killed on a beach, his mother died soon after he was born, his uncle laying her body to rest inside a church, before bringing the new born baby back to the west and raising him as his own. Whilst visiting the sites of each of their deaths was not planned, it happens so we witness his feelings as his past is presented to him. While this is going on the trio travel around Poland, and often seem to be followed by a bus load of Germans. Their travels are full of adventures and there is a comical undertone to the story, not laugh out aloud, but a degree of farce which brings an extra dimension to a story of self revelation. This book is different to "All for Nothing," again well translated; the story flows along, and again I would recommend it for reading groups as there is more than enough to create a lively discussion. That aside it is also a very good read for those who want to experience something a little bit different. TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 49

Epiphany Carol Service at The Abbey Join the congregation of Tewkesbury Abbey with Bishop Rachel, Bishop of Gloucester, the Archdeacons of Cheltenham and Gloucester, and the Reverend Canon Paul Williams, the Vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey at the Epiphany Carol Service in Tewkesbury Abbey at 6.00pm on Sunday 12th January 2020. The Abbey will be embellished by over 5,000 candles in the side chapels, presbytery, choir and around the font. As usual in 2020 there will be a theme to the candle displays and this year it will be ‘Flora of the Bible’. The Lady Chapel will be filled with flowers connected with the Blessed Virgin Mary such as Mary’s Slipper (Monkswood), Mary’s Ladder (St John’s Wort) and Mary’s Taper (Snowdrop). The service ends with a procession around the church when the main door of the Abbey is marked with a blessed chalk and the Three Kings arrive to present their gifts to Bishop Rachel. Chalk will be consecrated by Bishop Rachel and the congregation will be asked to take it home and mark the lintel of the main door or the threshold of the house, (or of a person’s ‘own room’) in memory of the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem, and as a reminder always to be ready with a generous welcome, to share our gifts and ourselves, with those who come to visit us.

The only time we have is TODAY. Today was the tomorrow that we talked about yesterday. Today is the yesterday we talk about tomorrow (if we arrive there). The only today we have IS today! • Stop waiting for better days to come. Make the best of today! • Stop waiting till the house or car is paid off. Do what you can today ! • Stop waiting till the kids leave school. • Stop waiting till you marry ( or divorce ). • Stop waiting till you lose weight. • Stop waiting for that lottery win. • Stop waiting for the Summer. • Stop waiting for Christmas. • Stop waiting till you retire. • JUST STOP WAITING! Now is the time to make the most and the best of time while we have it. This will, of course,vary from person to person but NOW is the time to “ make hay while the sun shines” as my dad used to say. He used to say that every day he experienced a miracle ~ that he opened his eyes in the morning, took a deep breath and faced a new day . Let TODAY be your day as you remind yourself that happiness is a journey rather than a destination. We are all in the same boat. It doesn't matter if you are royalty or the most humble person in the land, we each one need to remember that time waits for no one. Happiness IS a journey. I hope that you may enjoy it!

BLOW AWAY THE COBWEBS
This month we take a longer than usual route to work off the excesses of the festive season. The good news is that it is mostly flat, writes Jack B. Walker. Park with care in the village of Aston-onCarrant (reached from the B4079 by the side of Ashchurch Camp) and walk to the end of the village street. Go through the gate into the yard and follow the footpath past the riding stable and paddocks (1). At the end of the first small field, go through the gate and walk ahead along a straight path with open fields to your right and the hedge on the left. Eventually you will reach the Cotswold stone Aston barn, and after passing the buildings the main bridleway
manor house. When you reach the cross bear slightly left and go over Main Street into Court Farm Lane (5). Keep up the lane, which bears left just after a pond behind a stone wall, and carry on until you come to Court Farm. Follow the lane left, between the farm buildings. Do not take the lane which ascends Bredon Hill, but carry on along a farm track (with a sunken barn to the left) until you reach a road. Turn right and walk up the road (which is busy and has no pedestrian pavement) until it bears sharply right (6).

Keep straight ahead and walk across a field towards a hedge. Go through the gate, cross the lane with care and go through the five bar gate opposite (slightly to the left) and take the track known as the Worlies (3). Below you on the left is Carrant Brook. Keep along the trail, passing the pumping station, until you come to the edge of Beckford village (4). Turn left and walk along the road, passing the entrance to the
through a five bar gate into some paddocks, then into a large field via another farm gate. Keep the post and rail fencing to your right, passing a stile to meet a hedge. Walk with the hedge to the right until you reach a gate in it at the end of the field. Go through and bear left, then keep walking along a good track with the hedge to your right. Pass the turning to Robin's Mill and keep going until the lane dips down slightly, and there is a stile and gate to your right (8). The lane continues ahead into Kemerton village, passing the John Moore Nature reserve. Don't take this lane; instead turn left and follow the path down the edge of two fields (with the boundary to your right) until you reach a small wood (9). Walk ahead following the path over a large open field, towards a gap in a hedge (X). Some of this ground is soft and occasionally a diversion is in place; if so walk around the edge of the field until you reach the gap and go through it. Carry on ahead, skirting a sand and gravel pit on the right. Temporary stiles are sometimes in place here, so follow the arrows as directed for the path's current route. After passing the pit, bear slightly left and follow the path back towards Aston across the field (Y).
Cross Carrant Brook by the footbridge, over a meadow then a paddock, and go back into the village via a path between some houses.

Tewkesbury AllRunners is organising a ten week running course for complete beginners, starting this month. It will begin on Tuesday 14th January at 6.00pm, at the Sea Cadet Hall in Trinity Walk (off Oldbury Road). Tewkesbury AllRunners is a group for ladies of all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities, which started up in 2009. They run the streets, lanes, parks and offroad around Tewkesbury. It is only £2.00 per session, and there is really nothing to lose apart from a few pounds! Sessions also cater for those returning from injury in a recovery/walking group alongside the more able runners.
