HISTORIC EVENT FOR LOCAL BOYS BRIGADE FUNDS A special fund raising evening is to be held in aid of the restoration of Tewkesbury Boys Brigade’s head quarters. Since 2007 Tewkesbury Boys Brigade has been working hard to bring the building back into use following the floods. It’s nearly there and to help with some much needed fund raising, John Dixon from Tewkesbury Historical Society has kindly offered to host an evening to explore the history of Newtown. The evening will take place on Thursday 9th February, 7.30pm at Tirlebrook School. Mr Dixon is inviting residents who have any interesting photos, maps or documents about the area to bring them along on the evening. Organiser Alderman John McCloy said: “local companies have shown great support for the evening by offering raffle prizes. Cotteswold Diary and Clive Woolford Motors are sponsoring the event.”

He went on to say that he hoped it would be a good social evening at which to meet neighbours and friends, as well as finding out some of the forgotten history of Newtown. Ticket prices (including wine and cheese) will be £3. They can be bought on the door on the evening.

TREE SERPENT SPOTTED IN BUSHLEY We’ve heard of snakes in the grass about these parts, but tree serpents are not quite such a common sight. Our intrepid photographer snapped this wriggly beastie while out walking in the village of Bushley, near Tewkesbury, last month. Believed to answer to the name of Monty Python, the flowerpot snake was reputedly crafted in a tree near Stokes Lane by a local man called Tim. But nobody knows why.

Fly tipping in the countryside is unfortunately becoming more commonplace - but this is just plain daft. Discovered by a country lane near the Lower Lode Inn, Forthampton, were these six plastic bin liners - apparently from Birmingham - filled with leaves. These are the words of Avonside Private Hire’s customers, who are rallying in support of the only office-based taxi service in Tewkesbury. Traffic and pedestrian proposals for the area outside the busy High Street office look set to cause access problems for disabled and elderly passengers. If the scheme goes ahead, Avonside’s taxis would have to pick up and drop off customers in neighbouring Quay Street, rather than immediately in front of their office and waiting room. The extra walk would prove very inconvenient to a large number of customers. Avonside have started a petition to muster support to reach a compromise for the scheme. Regular taxi customer Doris Bourne, who uses a walking frame, said “I couldn’t retain my independence without Avonside. “I can’t get on bus and I can’t call for a taxi as there are no phone boxes left. “Like many others I can only shop locally and Avonside provide us with a caring and useful service.” Julie Waldron, of Care Connections Ltd, regularly brings blind people to the town and believes that not being able to hop into a cab right outside the door would cause them horrendous problems. Avonside’s owner Di Davies said: “We need to get 1,000 signatures so that the Highways Agency will listen to our cause. “We’re well on the way, but if you haven’t signed yet and wish to, please pop in and see us.”

TARGET FOR DARTS MEETING The Tewkesbury and District Winter Darts League will be holding a meeting this month to discuss the venues for its singles and doubles competitions. The organisers are requesting that each team is represented by at least one member, preferably the captain. The venues for the semi-finals and final of the knockout cup will also be decided upon at the meeting. This will be held at DD’s Club on Tuesday 17th January at 7.30pm.

A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR ALDERMAN KNIGHT SCHOOL Just in time for Christmas, a cheque for £250 was presented to Clare Steel, Head of Alderman Knight School, at their annual Christmas dinner. This was a joint donation from Steve Cooper of Cartridge World and Alistair Wilkinson of Basepoint Business Centres. The money was raised from recycled printer cartridges collected from tenants at the Basepoint Business Centre and subsequently purchased by Cartridge World to be used in their refilling and recycling process. Thanks must go to those tenants who took time to recycle, Cartridge World and especially Basepoint, who generously matched the amount raised to boost the total for the school. British Camp Reservoir and the Malverns countryside to the high hills in Wales. Eastwards the uplifting panorama stretches from the Lickey Hills to the Southern Cotswolds, with Bredon Hill’s great ‘stranded whale’ form in between. British Camp is over 2000 years old, and is connected to the so called Shire Ditch which runs down along the spine of the Malverns from here. The fort was a substantial settlement around 200 years BC. Walk southwards along the edge of the ramparts until you come to a path (3), which descends to a flattish grassed area, where there is a concrete orientation

and direction sign. (4). Follow the path from here to visit a curiosity known as Clutter’s (or Giant’s) Cave. Carved into a granite outcrop, its origins are somewhat vague. Various stories recount its use as a shepherd’s shelter and home of an 18th century hermit. There are also theories about its use as a pagan sacred site. Retrace your steps to point four and follow the well maintained broad track as it skirts around the slopes of the hill. There are various benches along this path where the views can be taken in. As the main track curves around, bear right

British Camp Reservoir collects water from various hill springs. It was opened in 1895 by the Duchess of Teck,

granddaughter of George III and mother of Queen Mary. On reaching the side of the reservoir, bear left, keeping the fence to your right. (6). When you reach the drive leading to the Reservoir House, turn left (7), and walk up through the woods. Eventually the drive emerges at the lower end of the car park.

Tewkesbury town centre was transformed into a buzzing market place when market stalls and farmers’ market arrived in town last month.  Shoppers were treated to a selection of fine fare including handmade chocolates and cup cakes during the Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Lights event.   With an array of gifts and hand crafted goods shoppers were spoilt for choice. Yvonne Everest of Chocolate Tree commented “the street was bursting with people and trade was really brisk”. Amanda Orton of Pretty Special Boutique added “It was lovely to see so many smiley faces in Tewkesbury." Nickie PhillipsonStowe, from the Orange Pig, said “The High Street was packed and the extra stalls of the festive market really seemed to appeal to shoppers.” Fund raiser and valued supporter of the lights Margaret White commented that one café had reported its busiest ever day. “Above all we’d like to thank all the people of Tewkesbury for shopping local this year and every year.”

A  plethora  of  talented  performers  brought  together by professional entertainer Jon Benns come to the are lined  up  for  the  Town  Mayor’s  Charity  Show  this month. An evening of entertainment featuring local musicians, singers and actors will take place at The Roses Theatre on Sunday 29th January at 7.30pm. Mayor Cllr. Chuck Pavey and Mayoress Mrs Anne Baylis are sure it will be a fabulous showcase of entertainment. It will be a nostalgic experience for Mayor Chuck as he worked as an electrician at the theatre prior to its opening in 1975 and subsequently carried out annual electric safety testing. NATIONAL TOUR TO START IN TEWKESBURY Celebrating  their  45th anniversary as one of the most  entertaining  bands on  the  live  music  scene, Fairport  Convention present their first album in four years on a special night  at  the  Roses Theatre. BIRTH STONE OF THE MONTH If  you  want  to  start  the New Year with a smoulder,  red  garnet  is  the stone  to  wear  –  and  if you  were  born  in January,  this  is  your birthstone! CHRISTMAS LIGHTS COLLISION At Vale Wildlife Hospital we do not deal with a large number of swans as there are various  swan  rescue  facilities  already  in  the  area  and  we  do  not  have  adequate facilities for caring for large water birds, writes Caroline Gould. However, we do always try to work with other centres for the good of any wildlife so if a call comes in to a swan needing help near to Beckford, we will always help out if possible. One such call came in regarding a swan needing help in Evesham. A few days earlier the Christmas lights had been put up around the town and this included a string of lights being erected across the river

bridge. Unfortunately a young swan, not used to this new obstacle, had collided with the lights when flying in to land on the River Avon. Although in shock, the swan had luckily not sustained any serious injuries and the caller had sensibly moved it away from the busy road into a small nearby car park.

Treatment for shock was all that was needed and the swan was released after a couple of days. Another swan casualty that needed a longer stay with us recently was a female (pen) called Zelda from Pittville Park in Cheltenham. She was attacked by a dog and suffered a nasty fracture to her leg. After

several weeks of treatment with us she was finally ready to be returned to the lake but as she had been away from her partner and cygnets for so long, we didn’t know whether or not she would be accepted back by them. However, after several tense minutes with Zelda flying from one end of the lake to the other, away from her family, she finally paired up with the male (cob), and they greeted each other with an emotional display of ‘swan love’ before swimming off together with the cygnets. That is what makes the work that we do so worthwhile!

CARBON MONOXIDE: WHY IT SHOULDN’T BE IN THE HOME Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion and is a poison which can occur in the home. It is odourless and colour less and its presence is the result of a poorly maintained heating system, which could be gas, solid fuel or oil. “Lets  support  our youngsters"  writes Victoria Gardener. “We are living in in uncertain economic  times  with employment  running  at high  levels.    The  latest figures  show  youth employment  has reached  the  one  million mark.” On a more local level there is more positive news as we head into 2012, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Job Centre Plus are working together to launch O p p o r t u n i t y Tewkesbury. They are working with local employers and a variety of partner organisations to ensure at least 200 young unemployed jobseekers are secured employment. So how can we help our youngsters? If you are a small business it may not be practical for you to offer an apprenticeship, but do think about alternative ways you could help such as offering a week of work experience. Or you could agree to sit on an interview panel during a mock interview to enable a youngster to gain valuable interview skills. As a parent you could approach your own employer to ascertain whether it would be acceptable for you to bring your son or daughter into work. Without work experience, it is difficult for young people to make realistic decisions about their future careers. Local schools always welcome local business people into school to talk to students. If you can spare a couple of hours to talk about your work, you may inspire a young student into a career they had never previously considered! Accommodating up to seven senior citizens, Abbeyfield House has a resident housekeeper who provides two meals a day, and supportive services. Yet the residents are expected to be able to look after themselves and lead independent lives. There are many Abbeyfield houses throughout the UK and around the world, some run as Care Homes from a central organisation, while others, like the Tewkesbury house, are independently run offering support and companionship. There is a committee of volunteer Trustees who receive no financial support from central government. The latest resident to arrive at Abbeyfield House is Alfred Moore, who has returned to the UK from Australia. Alfred chose to re-settle in Tewkesbury to be near his daughter, Peggy Clatworthy. "Abbeyfield is an ideal place for me to live; it has a great friendly and caring atmosphere and the food is good. I also have one of the best views in Tewkesbury," said Alfred. For many years Alfred worked with the Bristol Aircraft Company, spending time doing test work on planes such as the Britannia. PHILIPPA’S RIDE NETS £4000 Tewkesbury Abbey’s executive officer Philippa Shaw has return from her epic fund raising cycle journey.  Together with her son Rob, she joined other riders making a three hundred mile fund-raising trip from Vietnam to Cambodia. “We knew we had raised around £4,000 for the Abbey thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and from the events we had organised, but we still actually had to do the riding. Rob, at 17 was supremely confident but I wasn’t!”, said Philippa. “The cycling was tough, mainly because of the heat and humidity, but with some help from other riders and each other we both made it through. I was very pleased to see the finish line at Ankor Wat. The Cambodians were building their temple at the same time as the Normans were constructing Tewkesbury Abbey and it gave our trip a nice symmetry to start and finish at 12 century buildings of national importance.”

QR CODES COULD SAVE LIVES “It’s  very  encouraging  to  see  the  number  of  work related  accidents  is  on  the  decline,”  says  Graham Higdon of Atlantic Coast Studios. “But there are still around 150 needless fatalities in the workplace every single year in the UK". Graham’s company based in Station Drive, Bredon offers screen and digital printing services to produce high quality vinyl labels and stickers. One of ACS’s largest customer bases is the construction plant hire industry, where work related accidents are almost as high as in the agricultural sector. Last year there were 41 construction related fatalities or 2.0 deaths per 100,000 workers in this sector. This year Bredon’s Hardwick-based cleaning company CW Group marks a quarter of a century in business. Since Clive Willis founded his organisation in 1987, CW has  gone  from  strength to strength after humble beginnings.  Company director Mon-Fri 8.30am-5.30pm, Saturday 6.30am-1.00pm Clive told us a little about his early years. “My first employment was at Dowty Seals back in 1979. At this time of year, especially if there’s snow, the news is full of it:- delays that  is,  due  to  accidents, abandoned  cars  blocking the  roads  and  general chaos, when just a couple of  inches  of  the  white slippery  stuff  has  fallen. Why is this?  It doesn’t happen in Switzerland, Austria and other snowy countries, that have 10 times the amount we have, so what are we doing wrong? Well, they know it’s coming; they’re used to it and they’re prepared for it, whereas we’re not. So, how or what to learn to prevent ending up stuck in a snow drift – or worse!? Worry not, as help is at hand, because there are a few things you can do to dramatically improve your chances of not only staying on the highway, but also of getting you to your intended destination, without resorting to a long walk! Ok, in order to improve traction, we need weight centred over the driving wheels – and to this end we’re now quite lucky, as most cars these days are front wheel drive and that’s where the engine sits, so plenty of weight there. In fact, it’s often the difference between getting up a hill or not – BUT, remove them before the weather turns warm, otherwise, because of their construction, they will overheat and wear very quickly. (Having a spare pair of wheels in the garage, saves the mucking about of tyre swapping). Another trick, if you find yourself stranded on a hill and unable to climb, (as I did once in a Mini), is to turn the car round and reverse all the way up – It works! (Weight transference and all that).

portion to your temper fraying; I say: forget it! They do work well though on rear wheel drive cars, which ordinarily are completely useless in snow. Now I like BMW’s, but they’re all rear wheel drive (I know, not the ‘X’ series!) and if you’re lucky enough to own an M3, 5 or 6, just put it away in the garage, shut the doors and don’t even look at it again until the snow’s disappeared! So that’s how to keep going, but what do you do if you get stuck? Your best bet is to keep the wheels straight, (I’ll explain in a minute), and rock the car backwards and forwards, by a bit of deft clutch and accelerator action until you flatten out the snow in front and behind the car enough to roll out over the obstructing lump(s). BUT front wheel drive has a strange quirk – if you turn the wheels onto a sharp lock, under power the car will try to move in the opposite direction to the turn! So keep the wheels straightish until you’ve managed to extricate yourself. The other emergency measure is, if you have a set of rubber mats or over-carpets, shove those under the driving wheels; that can work very well, but try at all costs to avoid wheelspin. There is a very sound reason for this and that is:- wheel-spin generates heat, which will melt a thin layer of snow

immediately under the tyre and turn it to ice, which is not good, because it will reduce traction by up to 90%!. There is far more grip in loose snow; ice needs chains – and we’ve already discussed that. I can explain many more tricks in fine detail if you want to call me at the garage, but this is just a little taster for the time being. VOLUNTEERS WORK WITH EMERGENCY SERVICES Tewkesbury-based  Severn  Unit  Maritime  Volunteer Service members have been kept busy recently working with the local emergency services.  They were asked by Gloucester Fire and Rescue Service with whom they work with on occasions to take part in Exercise Interceptor which took place over two weekends recently. Four unit members Nic Price, Sue Yates, Jane Thomas and Peter Collins attended Severn Park Fire Training Centre at Avonmouth. Head of Unit Nic Price said "We they were taken onto the training ground to find a seven vehicle pile up consisting of a lorry, five cars and a motorbike which were involved in a simulated crash at a roundabout. “Members played a crucial role acting as casualties and with the aid of a superb make-up artist our crash injuries were made to look horrific and very lifelike. “The idea was to test crews from all around the area including Tewkesbury, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean to see how they can work with the equipment they now carry to safely cut victims free from vehicles in road traffic accidents, as well as testing command and control procedures. “The exercise also brought together paramedics from the ambulance service, the high-

ways agency and St. John's ambulance crews and a lot was learned from the exercise and Severn Unit members were thanked for their participation".

Following this exercise the Unit was pleased to welcome Inspector Mike Wilkinson of the Gloucester Constabulary to a Monday night meeting, when he explained the finer points of searching for missing persons (see picture above). This was a follow up to the Unit's involvement in Operation Watermark which was held at Olney Island, Gloucester earlier in the year.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Perhaps, on first thought, there is too much ‘Now’ and not enough ‘Then’ in Newtown!  However even the modern houses of Wellfield are approaching their Golden Anniversary.  The houses now cover the former Spa Farm where Tewkesbury tried but failed to rival the spa water of Cheltenham. Whose garden contains the former well? Cotteswold Dairies also started its illustrious life at Spa Farm when harry Workman took over from his brother in law. Initially his diary was located in Cotteswold Road but he had the foresight in the 1950s to buy land in Newtown to create an industrial estate away from the residential areas. Inevitably the residential area followed him and indeed it also submerged the grounds of Walton House. From 1911-37 that mansion was the home to the maternal grandfather of Barbara Cartland but after the last war it was converted into a children’s home. I wonder if any readers can recognise the nurse in the foreground who is now enjoying a year in the spot-light. There were also ‘Marconi Cottages’ and ‘Tintown’ – I have never seen any photographs of these homes. There really is, therefore, much ‘Then’ in Newtown, so bring along your memories and memorabilia to Tirlebrook School on 9th February. (John Dixon, 01684 294262; johnhistory@o2.co.uk)

Two  brothers  from  the  newly  formed  White  Tiger Tae-Kwon-Do  and  Martial  Arts  club  in  Tewkesbury entered their very first tournament after training for only five months. Championships held in Bradley and Jake Boden Hereford recently. (both yellow tags, which is the next grade from white belt) entered the National Independent Tae-Kwon-Do Association (NITA) British

Jake was unlucky not to come away with a trophy and Bradley (pictured) went on to miss gold by just a few points. The boys instructor, Paul Wanklyn, a fourth degree black belt said: “Both Bradley and Jake wanted to enter this competition which is the biggest of the year and they were up against some experienced fighters and higher grades. “For Bradley to come away with silver in his very first competition is a testament to his courage and ability. I am very proud of both Bradley and Jake they both have the potential to go far.” The club is held at Queen Margaret School in Priors Park.
