SCHOOL SEEKS PROMISES FOR AUCTION Tewkesbury School is calling for townsfolk and local businesses to step forward and put their skills and services up for auction. The school is seeking to raise money to provide more outdoor seating for students, so they enjoy the benefits of fresh air in all weathers. The fundraising will begin with an ‘Auction of Promises’ which is set to be held at the school on Saturday 25th April, at 7pm. Julia Whybrow, from the School’s Commercial Department, said: “We are looking for local businesses who can donate a promise however big or small. “It could be from the retail sector - hair or beauty treatments, for example - or from service industries such as garages who could offer car servicing, MOT tests and so on. “Individuals can help too - maybe offering to do a little gardening, ironing, painting and decorating or putting

ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR TEWKESBURY IN BLOOM

2014 was arguably the most successful year in the 22 year history of Tewkesbury in Bloom, and chair John Badham believes it is a good time to reflect about where the organisation is at, and where it wants to be. “We have for the first time won the best in category prize in the Heart of England competition,” said John. “This means that this year we will compete in the national Britain in Bloom tournament. The success has been made possible predominately by the hard work of a small number of volunteers, the generosity of our many sponsors and the splendid efforts of Brian Williams at Cornerways nursery. “In truth the whole thing runs on a shoe string and for further success we do need more sponsors and many more volunteers. “We need too to deepen and develop our links with community groups such as the community garden and nature reserve in Priors Park, the Ashchurch for Tewkesbury rail volunteers, the Roses groups, and the schools. “It is, I think, especially important to

encourage young people to be more involved, which makes relationships with schools as well as other youth groups particularly important. “In the last few months a number of key volunteers have joined our ranks. Emma Booth, manager of the Bell, and Shelby Powell. Both bring much valued knowledge and expertise. “This year we will face two important judging days. The standards that will be expected of us will be much higher. “The only way this can be achieved, is for the whole town to work together. A £1,000 gift that Bookworm have kindly donated is so important. “The money will be spent mainly on developing community projects. We hope too that we can encourage more donors and volunteers to join us. “This is all about

VILLAGE PUB RAISES FUNDS FOR DEFIBRILLATOR The Crown Inn at Kemerton is leading a fund-raising effort for a defibrillator to be placed in the village. Other rural communities locally have successfully obtained the units, for use in medial emergencies, which are placed in redundant phone boxes. One for Kemerton is likely to cost around £2000 to buy and install. The Crown is staging a series of charity events, from which £2 for every meal sold will go to the fund. A Bath Ale tasting evening on Thursday 5th February will donate £4 from each ticket sold.

Lakefest line-up looking good Things are shaping up nicely for this year’s annual Lakefest, which will be held at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick from Friday 7th - Sunday 8th August. Organiser Lee Martin says advance ticket sales for the familyfriendly music festival are unprecedented. “At the start of the year we’d already sold 2,000 tickets - and we haven’t even announced our headline acts yet!” Lakefest, which has been nominated four times for the UK festival awards and scooped a silver medal in ‘Festival Kidz’ 2013, will be supporting three main charities this year: Acorns, Stay Strong and G3.

The location - next to a beautifully situated waterpark just east of Tewkesbury - is stunning, and with bands playing under cover once again, the music is set to shine whatever the weather. Camping and glamping is also available on site.

Historic presentation to local library manager Ian Hollingsbee, a retired health lecturer from Australia, has presented a copy of his long awaited book, ‘Inside the Wire’ to Matt Stead of Tewkesbury Library. The publication chronicles the history of enemy Prisoners of War in Gloucestershire during World War II. Work set to start on new leisure centre Work is set to start on building a brand new £7.5m leisure centre in Tewkesbury. The contract for carrying out the works was awarded by Tewkesbury Borough Council to Wilmott Dixon, which will start groundwork on site on Monday 9th February. The construction company has a positive track record when it comes to building leisure centres – with more than a hun-

next to the council offices on Gloucester Road, and will include a main 25m pool as well as a 20m learner/trainer pool. Recognising the popularity of the current fun features at Cascades, mushroom fountains, water jets and tipping buckets will be among the attractions built into the new centre. There will also be a whole host of dry side facilities available too, including an adaptable 60 station gym, sauna and steam rooms, a flexible activities studio - which could be used for a whole range of sessions including dance, fitness classes and children's parties and a café and shop. To ensure customers continue to have a leisure centre to use, Cascades will remain open while the new facility is being built. The current Cascades site is also part of the Tewkesbury Town Centre Master Plan, which aims to revamp Spring Gardens and Bishop's Walk to support and enhance the town centre. Wilmott Dixon’s Managing Director for the South West and Wales Neal Stephens said: “We are looking forward to working closely with Tewkesbury Borough Council on this exciting project.” The Public Services Centre at the council offices, which is home to a range of public sector organisations including all borough council services, the police and

JobCentre Plus, will remain open as normal throughout the building works.

2015 started in much the same way as other years although the very first casualty was only just into the new year, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. The call came in at around 12.30am from West Mercia police asking us to attend an injured deer by the side of the road just east of Pershore. On arrival at the scene we found a badly injured roe deer lying at the side of the road which we sedated for transportation back to the hospital. A full examination back at base revealed that he had a major, open fracture to the stifle joint of one of his hind legs and sadly, our only option was euthanasia. Not a good start to the year. On a brighter note, a rabbit that we picked up out of the road on the way back from the deer call-out, turned out to have no major injuries and we were able to release it in a more suitable place. During the first few weeks of any year it is usual for us to receive many calls to foxes in trouble. Because December and January are the main mating months for foxes there is a big increase in them moving around within their territories which in turn results in more getting injured particularly in road traffic accidents. We have one fox in care at the moment which we had to capture by using a humane cage trap as he was still very mobile despite an injury to one front foot and a nasty, infected puncture wound to the inside of one of his hind legs. Two other fox callouts so far this year have involved one with an injured leg near a

school in Worcester and another by the side of the road near Ripple which was actually found next to another dead fox caught in a snare. By the middle of January we had already dealt with 50 casualties in 2015, mostly small

animals such as hedgehogs (we have over 180 hedgehogs in care so far this winter). We do ask people to transport smaller casualties to us themselves as we don’t have the staff to send out to pick up every animal we get a call about.

We are, however, onhand around the clock to respond to calls about animals which we wouldn’t expect a member of the public to handle. These include foxes, badgers and deer which all have the potential to cause serious injuries if not handled correctly. Although things are fairly quiet for us at the moment (apart from routine aviary and enclosure repair and maintenance) we are fully expecting the spring to start early this year and so we are prepared for the inevitable rush of ‘orphaned’ wildlife which is quite likely to begin with fox cubs and baby birds in the next few weeks. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD

I must confess that I have got rather fed up with plodding through mud so far this winter, writes Jack B. Walker. Although my advancing years do make me inclined to seek out flatter routes these days, many of them in this area trace the courses of rivers and streams - best avoided in the flood season!

So this month I decided to aim high and re-visit the slopes of Bredon Hill, starting from the lane at the side of the Yew Tree in Conderton. Just after the pub turn left (1) and walk up a lane past a thatched cottage. As the road bears right, carry on ahead past the stone cottages and go through the gate into the orchard (2). Bear straight up between the trees and at the top go through a gate into a field (3), keeping a drystone wall on your right. At the end of the field, go through the gate and turn left on to a tarmac lane. After a short distance, take the track up the hill to your right (4). This is a permissive path known as Rich Hill track. Walk up through the trees, emerging with a barn to your left. Carry straight on along the track for three quarters of a mile, with the open fields to your

left. There are sweeping views over the Vale of Gloucester if you look back behind you. Take the next track to the right (5) and look out for the ruined buildings of Shalden Farm as you go through a gate. Turn right opposite the buildings (6), and follow the path down into a gully, and keep descending with the field wall on your right. Above you on your left are the earthworks of Conderton fort, one of the principal Iron Age forts in the region. Carry on walking down the valley, with a stream to your left and trees to the right, and eventually you will come to a gate which emerges on to a rough track with a barn to the left. (7). Carry on down the hill until the track joins a lane by a metal barrier. (8). Walk back down the lane to return to Conderton village.

PROPERTY MARKET LOOKS SET FOR STABLE 2015, CLAIMS TEWKESBURY LEGAL EXPERTS The housing market in the region looks set for a steady New Year claims one of Tewkesbury’s leading law firms. Chantal Butters, a Conveyancing Solicitor for DF Legal, said expert predictions indicated stability for the year ahead. “Looking at various predictions it seems that

this year isn’t going to be one of boom or bust for the property market here,” said Mrs Butters, who oversees many residential property moves in the town. “In the UK and England in particular we have an obsession with property and here in Tewkesbury is no different,” she added. “All the indications should mean

a 2015 where there remains trust and confidence in the housing market and that should benefit the whole economy.” She added that most experts had predicted slow rises and she expected many moves during the year to be more based on lifestyle needs rather than anything else.

“A stable housing market means people move mostly for the right reasons,” she said. “A few years ago when property was rocketing in price it created a very strange environment and we can only hope the effects of the relatively recent recession has meant people have learnt lessons,” she added. She warned that a home purchase is a highly stressful matter

and those involved in a property transaction need assurance that the matter is in the safest hands. “It is far better to deal with a good local solicitor who will ensure they are acting in your interest than risk poor standard conveyancing off someone many miles away that in all probability you will not meet,” she said. “We hope 2015 will be a year where the

British economy continues to make good headway and the housing market remains a great indicator of this,” she added.

Tewkesbury's Watson Hall was transformed into a Medieval banqueting hall, for a twelfth night party, organised by members of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. Around 60 people enjoyed a traditional meal of Venison,

Pheasant, roast vegetables and all the trimmings, followed by Medieval style sweetmeats, fruit and nuts. They were well entertained by the popular Bubonic Wind Band, who played music of the period, and, once the tables were cleared, had

them up on their feet dancing. The event raised just under £400 which will go to towards the costs of this year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, which will take place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July.

NEWTOWN, TEWKESBURY WI CELEBRATES 50 YEARS The members and committee of Newtown threw a Christmas party to celebrate 50 years since the formation of their WI. A joyful evening was shared with Anne Turner, the Chair of the Gloucestershire Federation and Eunice Allen, WI Adviser, also members from Beckford, Bredon, Kemerton and Twyning WIs. Joan and Margaret, representing Amesbury WI in Wiltshire, were particularly welcome at the feast! The two WIs have formed strong bonds since the floods of 2007.

The venue was made festive with flowers and a splendid Anniversary cake, all created by WI members. There was a delicious buffet and a musical quiz by Paul Mcguire, which was clearly enjoyed as the company sang along with the numbers from the 50s and 60s. The evening was completed with a toast to celebrate past achievements and to look forward to the future.

TEWKESBURY REMEMBERS The Tewkesbury Video Club has produced a DVD of the parade and service held at the Abbey on Sunday 9th November, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Three cameras at the Abbey were used to film the service and large screens were installed around the ambulatory and Lady Chapel so that the service could be seen in all areas of the Abbey. Additional cameras

filmed the parade and the laying of wreathes at The Cross after the two minutes silence. The DVD will be on sale in the Abbey Shop in January, priced £9.99 and proceeds will be divided between the

British Legion, The Abbey and the Video Club. It is in recognition of the 154 local servicemen who lost their lives during the war and whose names were read out during the service.

RFU CHIEF OPENS BREDON STAR CLUBHOUSE On Saturday 17th January 2015 the Rugby Football Union Chief Executive Officer, Ian Ritchie, formally opened the Bredon Star RFC clubhouse in Bredon village. Mr Ritchie praised the work of grassroots community clubs, the bedrock of rugby in England.

A clubhouse had been a desire of the club for many years, and came to real fruition in the last two years, with a concerted fund raising activity leading to the building project starting at the end of the 2013-14 season with completion in the autumn. Fundraising involved the whole club, and

grants were obtained from the Rugby Football Union, Sports England Inspired Facilities Fund, Severn Waste Environmental Fund and Wychavon District Council. Local business contributed through ‘buy-a-brick’ sponsorship, and funds raised from the 2014 Calendar were shared with the

North Midlands Air Ambulance. Bredon Star was chosen by the Rugby Football Union to become a Lead Up and Legacy Centre for the 2015 Rugby World Cup which is being staged in England and Wales. “The new facilities will improve the quality of the rugby experience

for everyone using the site and provide more playing opportunities, especially for local people in the 14-24 agegroup.” said RFU Area Facilities Manager, Tom Bartram. Club Chairman, Kevin Falvey, said: “We are delighted that our project has won approval following its original identification by North Mids RFU. We will now have some of the best facilities in the area that local people around Bredon Hill can use during the week. The 2015 Rugby World Cup will inspire a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome newcomers.” The club was also pre-

Unfortunately over the last few weeks we have had a number of thefts and burglaries committed by bogus callers, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wrightof Tewkesbury Police. The victims have usually been elderly or vulnerable some of them living

Crime against older people is rare, but when it happens it can be deeply shocking, especially when it occurs on the doorstep. Most people who call at your home will be genuine. But sometimes callers will turn up unannounced, with their intention of tricking their way into people’s homes. These are known as 'distraction burglars' and 'bogus callers'. They may work alone, in pairs and could be either male or female. Children have sometimes been known to trick their way in to people’s houses. Every member of the community can help reduce Distraction Burglary. By following the simple LOCK, STOP,

CHAIN, CHECK message, we can all be sure that the people who enter our homes are who they claim to be. LOCK : Ensure you keep exterior doors locked. STOP: Before you answer the door, stop and think whether you are expecting anyone. CHAIN: Put the door bar or chain on. Look through the spyhole or the window to see who it is. Always keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. CHECK: Ask for and carefully check their ID card, even if they have a pre-arranged appointment (all genuine callers will carry one). If you are not expecting them and they do not carry an ID card. DO NOT LET THEM IN. To check a caller is genuine you can, look up the number in the phone book and check it against the card the caller has given you. Do not be tempted to just ring the number on the card, it may be fake. if they claim they are from a utility company, look at a recent bill to check the phone number. If you have any doubts at all as to whether the caller is genuine, ask them to leave and come back at a time that is convenient to you and when you have had a chance to ask someone to be with you. REMEMBER IF IN DOUBT: KEEP THEM OUT!

It offers a place to go on the last Wednesday of every month (2-4pm) for anyone in need of mental health advice or support.
