FARMERS MARKETS BACK IN TOWN

CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS?

Following the success of the 2013 farmers and craft markets in Tewkesbury, it has been confirmed that they will return to the town this Spring. The markets were promoted and organised by the Tewkesbury Town Team, in partnership with Grenchurch Markets and supported by Tewkesbury Borough Council.

Big event for Tewkesbury? A group of local business people and fundraisers is actively seeking ways to bring a carnival atmosphere back to Tewkesbury this Spring. They are keen to organise an event called ‘the big weekend’ during April, which would be focussed in the town centre and on the river. Ideas being floated so far include a parade, boat races, stalls, live music and street entertainment. In short, good old fashioned family fun! Invitations are being extended to local schools, sports clubs, groups and retailers to put forward ideas and get involved. For more details check out the Facebook page Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend.

OLD BAPTIST CHAPEL PROJECT WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND SUPPORT The Abbey Lawn Trust, a Tewkesbury buildings preservation charity, has received initial support from the HLF for the Old Baptist Chapel Interpretation Project. The project aims to maximise the heritage and learning potential of the Old Baptist Chapel, a late 15th century Grade II* building located off Church Street. Development Funding of £3,900 has also been awarded to help the Abbey Lawn Trust progress its plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. The chapel began life as a three-bay hall house and circa 1690 it was adapted for use as a Baptist meeting house and then ‘modernized’ in around 1720. In 1805 a new and larger Baptist chapel opened in was Tewkesbury and the old chapel was sub-divided into two cottages, with the remains of the chapel between. In 1976, Tewkesbury Borough Council, recognising the exceptional character and architec-

tural quality of the OBC, leased the building on a 99 year lease and undertook a substantial programme of restoration, aimed at returning the building to its early 18th century state. In June 2012, the Abbey Lawn Trust took over the management of the chapel for an initial two year period, to ascertain if it was possible to run it in conjunction with its existing heritage sites. The interpretation project aims to record the building’s architecture and history, from domestic use to early Baptist meeting house and through to the present day. It will also explore the role the chapel played in the past, develop a range of education resources and workshops based at the building and integrate it into the Abbey Lawn Trust’s current heritage and education provision.

It was business as usual in Tewkesbury As dramatic images were used nationally to highlight flooding in Tewkesbury, local residents and organisations were spreading the word that the town was still open for business. Borough Tewkesbury Council, alongside local residents, businesses and organisations, were active is stressing that the town was accessible from all routes, and that

shops and businesses were open as normal. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Cllr Dave Waters said:

“While the images of Tewkesbury Abbey with the flooding look dramatic it can give the impression that the town has been cut off, which just isn’t the case. “We need to be supporting our local economy as much as possible so it is really important that we all do what we can to make it very clear to the public and businesses that they are able to access the town - and that it really is business as usual.” Local business owner Amanda Orton said: “Despite the grim pictures shown in the news reports, it really was business as usual for Tewkesbury. “Despite the Gander Lane car park being flooded, there are plenty of others to use and there is of course free roadside parking for an hour in town.”

When is a door not a door? It is always sad when a business closes down. However, it is clear that businesses come and go all too quickly, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.

It was not the same in 1891 when Mr Parker took over 117-118 High from Mr Street Dowswell, both hairdressers. Readers might remember that, in the 50s & 60s, Mr. McHugh took over as a tobacconist and fishing tackle seller. The architecture seems a little bizarre with the gabled building being regarded as part of that to the left. This was convenient; with a shop to the left and café to the right. What interests me, however, is the door that coffee drinkers know well is no longer a door. When the building was gutted by shop fit-

ters my theory, that it was a former alley, was confirmed. It was in fact Alley, Codrington’s owned by the benefactor who financed our Town Hall façade. To be a tenant in his alley entailed voting for him as MP – otherwise you would be “out on your ear”. If you were very lucky, your vote might also earn a Codrington Half Guinea (55p or about £33 today).

Sir William (pictured above) was generous, especially in 1792, because his seat was targeted by Anti-Slavery Campaigners. He won - but his confidence was severely shaken. (Voting has only been secret since 1872!) In Tewkesbury, never assume a door is what it seems!

The Tewkesbury Abbey bell ringers are hoping to recruit some new members this year and are opening the tower on the afternoon of Sunday 9th February. Guided tours will take place at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, and it presents an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in taking up the hobby to find out more. Bell ringing is suitable for almost anyone from age 11 upwards. It is a potentially lifelong hobby; a good mental and physical exercise and costs nothing to take part. Ringers need to be able to attend weekly practice on Thursday evenings and be able to ring on Sundays either in the morning or afternoon (or both). Archaeologists SUMVS volunteer Gordon McDonald and Steve Clarke MBE

LOCAL MARITIME VOLUNTEERS LINK WITH BRONZE AGE Members of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service enjoyed an interesting evening recently, when one of their own members, Gordon McDonald, came to talk on the book entitled the 'Lost Lake.' Head of Unit Nic Price said "Gordon has had a lifelong interest in the archaeology of the Severn Area, and is a keen member of the Monmouth Archaeological Society. He made significant contributions to the book ,which was written by professional archaeologist Stephen Clarke. It launched at was Monmouth Museum last October." When evidence of a huge post-glacial lake formed some 10,000 years ago was found around the Monmouth area this has led to discoveries of lakeside settlements dating back to the Stone Age and Bronze and Iron Ages. With this book the archaeologists announced an internationally significant discovery as they believe they have recognised a prehistoric boat-building site which overlooked

the lake during the Bronze Age. McDonald Gordon said: “The Maritime Volunteer Service have had some involvement as the MVS interest in Bronze age boats began in the summer of 2000 when they were asked to attempt to recreate the 4000 year old replica sea -going craft carrying a 3 ton bluestone out of Milford Haven en-route to Stonehenge. The discovery of a Bronze Age lakeside slipway below a field at Monmouth in 2010 is part of this story as it is believed that this could well have been where these boats were built and launched." Nic Price said "Severn Unit MVS have other interesting speakers planned for 2014 in addition to our training evenings ashore and afloat and new members are always welcome. CHECK THOSE INDEPENDENT FUEL PRICES Someone once suggested to the writer to check out PJ Nicholls’ fuel prices as sometimes they were cheaper than many of the larger fuel outlets. Sure enough on the 14th February they had petrol at £1.26.9 per litre and diesel at £1.33.9 which did indeed appear to be the best price around on that day. FESTIVE SEASON MISERY SET TO SEE DIVORCE COURTS FULL, WARNS LAW EXPERTS Festive misery will have led to warring couples heading to the courts for divorce in the first few weeks of 2014 claims one of Tewkesbury’s leading law firms. Wayne Phillips, head of family law at DF Legal said that the holiday period will offer little cheer for many. “Often twice as many people as at other times of the year come to us to talk about divorce following Christmas,” said Mr Phillips. “It is our busiest period by far.” “There are multiple reasons for this,” he added. “Alcohol fuelled rows, unwanted family gatherings, office party flings, and just simply a reflective period where couples just realise they don’t want another year together. It all plays a part,” he said. “This list and many more factors besides means the first few months of the New Year is a busy one for us,”

added Mr Phillips, whose firm have offices in Tewkesbury, Stroud, Cheltenham and Ledbury. The presentation took place at Tewkesbury Cadet Centre, in Red Lane, Tewkesbury on Thursday 16 January 2014. The award is made annually to a cadet unit which has given outstanding service to the community. 785 Squadron has supported many organisations, and events, both civic and private, during the past year, with cadets and staff assisting with car parking, leaflet distribution, Poppy Appeal collections, fundraising for the War Memorial restoration, and helping out at coffee mornings. The Squadron Corps of Drums has provided drum displays at Remembrance and other events in and around Tewkesbury. These have included ‘Discover Tewkesbury’, Marina Court Remembrance observance, Tewkesbury School annual Remembrance and joining with the town band to provide a ‘marching beat’ for the Remembrance Sunday Parade in Tewkesbury. NEW QUILTING GROUP TO START THIS MONTH A new textile crafts group is being set up in the village of Bredon, near Tewkesbury. To be known as Quilting Arts - Bredon, it will meet on the first Sunday afternoon of the month starting from 2nd February. The regular monthly sessions will run from 1pm -5pm and will be held in the Village Hall. THE SWAN THAT LEFT ITS MARK The total number of casualties dealt with at Vale Wildlife in 2013 was down quite considerably on the previous few years, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. We believe that our annual number gives some indication of how our wildlife is doing out in its natural habitat and therefore last year was a poor year for many out there. species Hedgehogs in particular appeared to have a bad year as we dealt with only around half the number treated in 2012. During the year, a few swans pass through our doors although a majority of swan casualties are dealt with by one of the three swan rescue centres that operate in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. One swan that we treated recently had a very lucky escape, mistaking the busy, six-lane M5 motorway for the river. With the fields beside the motorway in full flood it would have been difficult for the swan to between differentiate water and tarmac as it

GREATER PROTECTION FOR DOGS AS VETS INTRODUCE NEW VACCINE

The Bill! flew in to land, and it ended up amidst all the traffic, spelling great danger not only for the bird but for all the drivers too. on the Animals motorway can often lead to major delays as it can result in the traffic being stopped until the danger is removed and closing carriageways is a major logistical task. For this reason, traffic officers from Gloucestershire police are given the opportunity to attend a course on handling large water birds at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at Slimbridge. Luckily the officer who was first on the scene had attended one of these courses and so was able to ‘apprehend’ the swan, secure it in the swan bag that he carried in his patrol car and he then headed over to Beckford in his BMW police car, with the swan sitting on the back seat. Once in the hospital, the swan was examined. He had sustained a few wounds and scrapes but nothing too serious, his wounds were cleaned, he was given an injection of long-acting antibiotic and was settled into an enclosure. We are very grateful to the police officer who rescued him and brought him. However, I don’t think the swan was quite so thankful as he left his mark all over the back seat of the police car! An important new vaccine for a distressing disease in dogs called Canine leptospirosis has been introduced by local vets Folly Gardens Veterinary Clinic in Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine provided by vets at Folly Gardens will now protect dogs against four strains of leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise of this potentially fatal disease. Vet Brad Cooper explains, “The Leptospirosis bacteria are passed in the urine of rats or other rodents which may carry the infection. “The bacteria survive particularly well in damp environments such as ponds and slow moving watercourses where rats may be commonly found. DEAN WILL RIDE 500 MILES Tewkesbury Postman Dean Raggett is to embark on a gruelling 500 mile cycle ride this spring, in order to raise money for the prostate cancer charity.

The route will take him a lot further than his usual local round. In May he will be getting on his bike to ride from Tewkesbury to London, then on to Amsterdam, Brussels - and back again! To help get him on his way, Dean is organising a charity fundraising night on Saturday 1st February, at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick. Admission is free to the evening, which begins at 7.30pm - with the highlight being a quiz. Entrance is £15 per team (minimum five people).

This short novel tells the story of the folk in a small rural Irish town as the population struggles to survive after the Irish boom, eventual collapse and the bank crisis. The local builder has done a runner after his business failed leaving a new estate on the edge of town unfinished with just two houses completed and occupied. The one by Realtin, a single mother, whose toddler son is later taken from a nursery. The main character, Bobby Mahon is a local hero who had been a foreman for the builder and now tries to scratch a living doing remedial repairs which brings him into contact with Realtin and provides rumours of an affair. However, it is also Bobby's relationship with his father that creates the core of this unusual novel. Each of the over twenty chapters is recounted by different individuals within the community who are each witness to the life and events, some of them tragic, that surround the two main characters The spinning heart of the title is an emblem on the gate to Bobby's father's cottage which he wants to demolish as soon as his father dies. It is Bobby's duty calls, his daily visits, to the father he dislikes and the ensuing events and how they are viewed by his neighbours that help provide the reader with a visual image of an economy in ruins and devastated lives. the identification of the object on page fourteen of this month’s Tewkesbury Direct - but it looks very much like remains of a the ‘Liberator’ Pistol from the Second World War. Bits are missing, including the trigger and cocking piece but otherwise it looks like one. Liberator Pistols were single shot .45 calibre ‘disposable’ pistols mass produced between 1942 and 1943 for dropping to resistance groups in occupied Europe and elsewhere. With an effective range of about 7 feet and no chance of a quick second shot the pistols were not really practical and saw limited deployment and probably even less use. So assuming the remains are not that of a toy gun, I’d say i’s a Liberator .45 Pistol from the Second World War.” George Ellis. And now – the rest! What was the point, not to mention the considerable expense, of moving the traffic lights 50 metres further up the lower High Street, narrowing the road by 4 metres and losing a number of valuable parking spaces into the bargain? The ‘pavement extensions’ at various intervals have cost us 3 parking spaces each, just as the alterations to the corner into Sun Street have. The busiest road in town, now much narrower, with the addition of obstructive central traffic islands, have made life much more awkward for trucks and buses. So, as it’s now impossible to pass a truck that’s unloading, yet more parking space has been given over to ‘Loading Only’. Pretty it all maybe, but practical it’s not! It has removed valuable free parking spaces right where we need them most – for the ‘quick in and out’ type of shopping so many of us do. We initially lost conservatively – 38 spaces; parked tidily, that figure rises to 44. Add in the new loading bays and that figure rises to 58. It is claimed that parking

Tell us where they are then, because I’ve only found a token few! And in any case, if I want to nip into the bank, or Smiths, I don’t want to have to park down by the Fire station and leg it back in the pouring rain. Another problem: These ‘pavement extensions’ are sharp cornered and not ‘rounded’, so you’re far more likely to curb your wheel(s) as you park, or alternately bash the offside on one of the islands in the middle. Just take a look at the tyre marks on all the new bits and the narrow section approaching the lights down by Smiths. And these extensions have now been adopted as additional crossings by all and sundry, producing several shunts in the process. So now, many frequent shoppers no longer want to go into the High Street, with the inevitable loss of revenue for shop-keepers. ‘Jo public’ doesn’t want to park in the expensive local ‘pay & display’s, they’ll go to Cheltenham, where the retail parks are free. We liked the High Street as it was, so please remove the central islands and pavement extensions and give us back our parking, otherwise businesses will continue to fold, only to be replaced by yet more coffee and charity shops. Just think of the dwindling business rates that are no longer being collected from all those empty shop. I wonder who’s going to pick up the tab for that? I think you already know!

Tewkesbury High Street “was never closed due to a traffic accident” Dear Tewkesbury Direct, With reference to the article by Anthony Stockman 'High Street - A Change for the Better?' in your January issue, I totally agree with his sentiments. Having lived in the High Street from 1946 to 1973, where my parents had their place of business, the road was only closed for the Fireman's pram derby held on August bank holiday. It was never closed due to a traffic accident. As regards to the amount of traffic that used the A38 as the high street formed part of that trunk road, when the M5 finished at Strensham, there was basically non stop traffic from the Thursday evening right through to the

Sunday afternoon. This was the holiday traffic from Birmingham and the Midlands travelling down to the South West. People were still able to visit the shops and cross the road without any hindrance - and that's without the benefit of wider pavements and pedestrian islands in the middle of the road! I can also remember when Spring Gardens was the cattle market, with the railway engine sheds behind it. I also played in the railway wagons that were left isolated on the tracks that led to Healings Mill, situated in Quay Street. Yours sincerely, Roger Blunden, Tewkesbury

Ensure that you plan your journey, listen to the weather forcast before setting out and listen to reports on local radio during your trip. Consider is your journey really necessary or leave it until later in the day when the roads have had a chance to thaw. If you find yourself driving on snow or ice adapt your driving accordingly, reduce your speed stopping distances increase on wet roads and increase even further on ice. Always ensure you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear. Avoid rapid acceleration,harsh braking and coarse steering ensure that you reduce your speed gradually and in plenty of time when

stopping or cornering. Remember that the road conditions may appear to be improving but this does not occur uniformly there may still be isolated patches of ice in shaded areas or under bridges. Many of you

will be reading this and saying to yourself that this is all common sense and much of it is however there are still too many collisions which could be avoided by taking note of these precautions. Unfortunately we are still experiencing an increased level of burboth from glary dwellings and outbuildings, the peak times have been early evening when it starts to get dark. Be a good neighbour if you see anything suspicious contact police. If a crime is in progress use 999 for non-emergency calls use 101. The Central Band of the RAF are to visit Tewkesbury School on the Tuesday 25th February, to take part in a school careers day. POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

How to make self belief work for you this year “Do you take notice of what you say to yourself ?” asks local therapist and counsellor, David Slater. If the answer is in the affirmative then you have to be sure that you are aware of what you are saying to yourself when you have your private chats. The thing is that when you tell yourself that you can’t do something then you generally believe it and live by that decision. If you repeat something often enough you easily become convinced by what you are saying. So, the sad fact is that when you tell yourself you can’t, you won’t no matter how flimsy the reason or excuse may be. BUT we have choice. The same dynamic that leads us into feeling we can’t do something can be used to make us feel that we can. It can work in a positive way and not just a negative one. If you tell yourself often enough that you can, you will. Obviously it has to be within the realms of possibility and reality. No good saying “ I can climb Everest with a fridge on my back“ when you have a panic attack standing on the front door step and your fridge is bigger than you are. Think of all the things that you have not done purely because you told yourself that you couldn’t. Now just get into your mind what would happen if you carefully and calmly applied the same power of suggestion towards being productive, towards being effective, towards getting things done. So your task for the month ahead, if you chose to accept it - and you will because you KNOW you want to do this - is a simple task. Every day you say “I can do this.” Simple, isn’t it ? “I can do this.” Then you move forwards and enlarge it a bit. “I can do this. I will do this.” Not rocket science, is it ? “I can do this. I will do this.” What you will discover is that IT WORKS!. Put all the power of your own self belief to work for you. Coaches at the Tewkesbury based AB Severn club were delighted with the success, and paid tribute to the hard work put in by the young rowers in only the first year in which they have competed. Drawn mainly from Hanley Tewkesbury, Castle and Thomas Riches Schools, AB Severn junior rowers are fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the national circuit. The club is still fairly new, having been founded in 2012. Particular mention should be made of Danny Casey-Gurney who achieved the remarkable feat of winning one gold and two silver medals.
