BRIT POP’S FINEST HEAD FOR LAKEFEST Ocean Colour Scene, one of the leading acts from the 1990’s Brit Pop movement, have just signed up to headline at this year’s Lakefest event. Last year’s festival, held at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, was a great success - and this year the organisers Lee Martin, Steve Daff and Martin Newell have raised the bar even higher. Already lined up to play at the Lakefest 2013 cider and music festival are The Levellers and Chas and Dave. The addition of an internationally renowned super band like Ocean Colour Scene will provide an even greater draw. Lee Martin said: “We are proud to bring a World-famous band to Tewkesbury, and hope

The youngest members of Little Tinkers enjoyed a free bouncy party last castle month. The Playgroup, which meets at Wheatpieces Community Centre, is the longest established pre-school group to make the centre its permanent home. Centre Manager, Adam Fendt, said: “We wanted to reward the group for their loyalty, and decided to offer the children a free bouncy castle, which we are glad they accepted. “This is just a small token of appreciation for the volunteers who run the playgroup, which plays an important role in the community supporting parents and carers - and enabling little ones to make new friends.” The group meets every Friday (during school term time) 10am - 11.45am. Traditional Cotswold Skills in Miniature Visitors to Forthampton will certainly look twice at a display of delightful miniature Cotswold stone wall planters, which are for sale by the roadside. Lovingly laid in the same way as a traditional drystone wall, they are the work of local lady Penny Benfield. Penny had spent thirty years getting up in the early morning to milk cows and, when she left the job recently, decided to revive a craft started by her father Dennis. Each planter involves a full day’s work from start to completion. Penny sources her tiny Cotswold stone rocks from Huntsman’s quarries. They come in a of shades, variety

The planters are then painstakingly created, using time-honoured techniques which have built thousands of fullsized walls for centuries. To promote longevity, Penny does secure some of the stones using a resin glue. LET THERE BE LIGHT As part of its ongoing conservation work, Tewkesbury Abbey is aiming to introduce new, energy efficient lighting into the building. It has set a fundraising target of £350,000 for the scheme, which aims to present the abbey at its best for generations to come. In the 900 years since it as built, flaming torches and candles were been used to light services until electricity was introduced. The most recent programme of lighting was completed in 1986. COUNCIL RINGS THE CHANGES A new telephone system installed at Tewkesbury Borough Council’s offices last month could make savings of up to £30,000 a year. The new arrangement, which will required funding of £87,000, should cost less and improve customer service. The annual savings will be made through a range of improvements, including improved effectiveness, reduced maintenance and enabling the council to introduce more flexible working for staff.

New Community Shop Opens In Priors Park A new charity shop selling a wide range of second hand items has opened in Priors Park, Tewkesbury. The shop, in Queens Road, is run by the Priors Park Neighbourhood Project, who will use money raised from sales to fund local community projects. Books, clothes and toys are all proving popular - but donations of any items in good condition which could be resold are always welcome. Manager Claire Mills said: “response to the shop has been very good so far, but we do need a constant supply of goods to replace what we are selling. “At this time of year, unwanted Christmas presents might make a good donation.” Claire is also seeking volunteers to help run the shop, and has asked us to appeal for electricians who can carry out PAT testing to get in

Wildlife Sculpture Workshops for Children in Tewkesbury Renowned metal sculptor, Celia Smith, will help children to create their own unique wildlife sculptures based upon natural history objects in the collection of Tewkesbury’s John Moore Museum. Celia uses wire to create her sculptures and for the workshops will be drawing her influences from the wildlife observations of writer John Moore. Celia will be at the John Moore Museum, in Church Street, on Saturday 9th February. At the end of the work-
shops she is running, children will be able to take their own unique sculpture which they have created home with them.

Tewkesbury’s Great Wall Chinese Restaurant is under new management following the retirement of proprietor Andrew Fong. Grace Liew and sister-in-law Jessie Chew have taken over the running of the popular eatery from Andrew, who is their uncle. With over seven years experience running restaurants in Cheltenham, Grace, Jessie and family hope to carry on Andrew’s great tradition of serving great oriental food to the people of Tewkesbury. Originally from Canton province in China, Andrew Fong opened the Great Wall, in Tewkesbury High Street, during 1977. Since that time it has become one of the longest established restaurants in the town, attracting diners from a wide area due to the quality and variety of its Chinese and Malaysian cuisine. Andrew, who lives in Mitton, worked in Hong Kong before moving to Brunei, where he joined Shell Oil and was part of a team running a restaurant for engineers. It was there he met his wife Christina. Andrew and Christina, who have two children, will continue to be active in the county. Andrew is vice chairman of the Gloucestershire Chinese Community, while Christina is vice chair of the local Chinese Women’s Guild.

" Craig ‘Cutup’ Jones Craig Jones, who lives in Northway, started honing his DJ skills at the age of fourteen, playing at small events for family and friends. In 2001 he was taken on by Cheltenham-based F1 Sounds, playing in local bars and music venues. Five years later he went solo, and began to work throughout the UK and abroad. After earning himself a solid reputation for his cutting and mashing skills, he now plays in some of the Britain’s top venues, including the O2 Academy in Birmingham, Gatecrasher Watford, Bunker, Syndicate in Bristol and BCM Mallorca. In 2010 he was the winner of the Best DJ in Magaluf competition in Mallorca, where he has also been a regular performer. DJ Cutup Jones career is now going from strength to strength, and he has been working with some of the best known names in the business: Jaguar Skills, DJ Luck & MC Neat, Ultra Beat, Judge Jules, Tiesto, and David Guetta. Couples facing divorce or separation urged to seek advice over options Sadly, January is when many couples with relationship difficulties choose to make a fresh start, with many family lawyers reporting it is their busiest month of the year. The intensity and pressure of the festive period, together with couples with children delaying difficult decisions until after Christmas, regularly leads to a rise in divorce and separation figures at this time of year. This year, however, the numbers are expected to be skewed by the imminent cuts to Legal Aid. With legal aid no longer available for many family cases from April this year, it is expected that those who would previously have qualified for Legal Aid may end up falling through the cracks after April. This lack of access to legal advice could see an increase in drawn-out courtroom battles; increased acrimony; and, most worryingly, a detrimental impact on children. This may help the Government cut spending, but there’s a bigger social cost in the long run. Currently when you order your prescription or see your GP you receive a green piece of paper which authorises the pharmacy to dispense the medication. Under the new system you will not normally be given a prescription form as such , but a prescription request will go onto the NHS Spine, onto a secure website. To have the prescrip-

New direction for local man A Toddington-based man who for the last twenty years has been more accustomed to supplying customers with new cars, has left Warners' Motor Group to set up his own business. Grant Kirkwood was Sales Manager of Warners' Tewkesbury branch, and this new venture is a real departure from his previous career. The business he has established will provide a local garden maintenance service and help around the home. FITNESS SESSIONS FOR OLDER FOLK Older residents living in Tewkesbury are being encouraged to keep healthy this year, by taking part in community health sessions.
The Active and Able sessions, designed by Tewkesbury Borough Council, enable older people to keep fit in a social environment. The classes, which are delivered in partnership with Severn Vale Housing, were introduced in response to the number of older people having falls. The chair-based exercises are designed for people who feel unsteady on their feet or are concerned about falling. Particularly, the sessions are useful for strengthening the hips, back and wrists. The tai chi sessions are suited for people wishing to maintain
their balance, strength and coordination and involves a range of eighteen graceful movements. Sessions on are held in easy to access locations in Tewkesbury. Each costs £2 or £4 depending on the length and attendees are able to pay on the day. Leisure Cascades Centre, which is run by Tewkesbury Borough Council, is also encouraging people who want to get fit to consider taking up swimming as a hobby. When the worst of the Winter’s weather struck and Dave Wilkinson had a problem with his central heating boiler, he was dismayed to discover his usual maintenance engineers didn’t want to lift a finger to help. “Somebody suggested I should contact Johnston Scotia instead. They are a Bredon-based compa-
ny, and they simply bent over backwards to help out,” said Dave. Dave, who lives at
Saxon Park, said he’d been told by another company that parts couldn’t be obtained until after Christmas. “I rang Johnston Scotia and spoke to Callum, who made me feel really welcome and said he would do what he could to help,” Dave explained. “An engineer arrived the next morning, found a faulty circuit board was the cause of the problem, and ordered the part to arrive for the Saturday morning. “When the delivery people let them down, Scott Johnston - who was working in Worcester at the time located another part and they came down to fit it there and then.” Scott, who is MD of the firm, commented: “We are a local company that believes in service, attention to detail and reputation and we don't like to leave people in a fix. AWARD FOR HISTORIC TEWKESBURY HOTEL Staff at a Tewkesbury Hotel which was featured in a Charles Dickens’ novel are celebrating after receiving an award from the website LateRooms.com. Based on guests comments made at the room-booking website, The Royal Hop Pole was voted one of the top six historic hotels in the UK. Delighted with the award, manager Linda Coxshall said: “It's a lovely 'thank you' to the reception and housekeeping team who work hard to keep
the historic building looking so good and guests happy. We hope a great award such as this will bring even more visitors to Tewkesbury.” The Royal Hop Pole employs over forty people. Dating back to the 16th century, it was mentioned in Charles Dickens’ ‘The Pickwick Papers.’

This is the public house’s latest manifestation – in former lives, it was known as the ‘Bosun’ (reasonable) and ’Winking Frog’ (ludicrous); any forgotten names, please contact the author! The ‘Boathouse’ is the most accurate as it reflects the fact that the site was once dominated by Bathurst’s Boatyard. On the other side of the Avon were no homes to be disturbed – only Lilleycroft House, aka ‘Twixt Bears’ (an apt name!). The Bathursts were immigrants from the Ironbridge area on the Severn.

The boat builders had settled here in the 1830s and became one of the three biggest employers in the town, famous for the elegant river steams seen here. The firm even opened a public swimming area in 1868! It was the death of the third generation in 1917 which saw the firm in decline. In 1926 the company was sold for £6,000 but in 1938 it was withdrawn from auction at £4,400. There was, however, a renaissance in World War II when it was taken over by Robinsons from Lowestoft and was involved in building naval vessels. Leo Robinson died in 1952 and the firm was doomed, although one apprentice, the late Dennis Vickeridge, carried on building elegant river cruisers at another ‘Boathouse’ in St Mary’s Lane. Let us hope that a profitable company can reopen and be a good neighbour by being as elegant as a Bathurst boat!

LOCAL LADS TAKE THE ‘ULTIMATE’ CHALLENGE
Outlaw Mixed Martial Arts team members Harry ‘H-Bomb’ Davies and ‘Big’ Jakub Lebkowski will be taking the ‘ultimate’ challenge on Saturday 23rd February.
Both lads will be fighting on Ultimate Impact ‘Vendetta’ which will be held at Cheltenham Recreation Centre in Tommy Taylor’s Lane. Harry and Jakub will be entering the Cage in their first Mixed Martial Arts bouts, fighting under Unified Amateur Rules. The full contact “cage Fights” will be held over three x 3 minute rounds, with large gloves and shin protection mandatory. Mark Woodard head coach at Outlaw MMA Gym, who is one of the top referees of MMA in the UK, and can regularly be seen on TV plying his trade, said: “Both Harry and Jakub have worked extremely hard. They have had to lose weight and get in the best physical shape of their lives. “The six week training camp has been gruelling, I am proud of everyone who trains at Outlaw for supporting these two in their quest

Wanting to make a strong comeback to the music industry, Williams brought out the UK number one single ‘Candy’, which was cowritten with his friend and fellow Take That member Gary Barlow. The album itself is a breath of fresh air to the pop charts; it isn’t overproduced and contains
eleven tracks which are all recognisably Robbie. The pop-rock songs are anthems which feature a prominent use of the guitar and synthesisers. Songs on the album such as ‘Into the Silence’ really sum up one side of Robbie’s music, with choruses and verses blending nicely with the lyrics which may perhaps reflect Williams’ past. Other songs such as ‘Hey Wow Yeah Yeah’ are much more upbeat and exciting, giving the album an interesting mix of tracks. I would give this album a definite 4/5, full of fun pop anthems fit for anyone to listen to. Rob Wakerley

Thirty five years after it was first written, a local writer and musician has finally released a single. Mike Weaver wrote ‘Alex’ - a folk song about the second world war - in 1978, and made a recording of it two years later. It was produced by a friend in Birmingham, but shortly after completion the master tapes were stolen from his car. When Mike heard recently that the same friend had been diagnosed with cancer, he
decided to try and release the record, and raise money for charity through its sales. With the help of worldwide distributors Songcast Music, ‘Alex’ came out last month and is now available to download from iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Play and eMusic. 50% of the royalties from each sale will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

One of the country’s top folk musicians, Phil Beer, is returning to Tewkesbury to help raise money for the Battlefield Society’s ‘Arrivall’ sculptures. Phil, who is one half of the internationally famous ‘Show of Hands’ duo, will be playing at Theoc House on Friday 15th March, 7.30pm. Multi-instrumentalist Phil (right), is no stranger to Te w k e s b u r y, having appeared in the town several times as a solo artist, with his band and in the all-star ‘Feast of Fiddles’ collective. He is widely respected by musicians of all genres and has played with many top names in the
business. Phil is also a composer, talented vocalist and has his own record label. Theoc House is an intimate venue, so tickets will be limited. GUIDES PICK UP THE CHALLENGE As part of the Queen's Jubilee, Guides' Tewkesbury Division Commissioner Sue Lambert, challenged units of all ages to do a Charity or Community Challenge in honour of the Queen - who is patron of the movement. This could be carried out in any form; from fund raising to tree planting. The girls had to come up with an idea with the help and support of their leaders. 1st Tewkesbury Guides, with help from Tesco Tewkesbury, did a charity bag packing last month. Over several hours the girls helped customers with their shopping and they in turn kindly donated a fantastic £204.17 for Help for Heroes. 1st Tewkesbury Guides would like to say a big thank you to Tesco customers, its manager and staff for allowing them to complete their challenge. Six girls and three leaders took part in bag packing. The girls received their charity challenge badge in recognition of their hard work.

This new venue will be familiar to many players, who will have played there in the past. Sam was forced to take action when the club had to find a new venue. In order continue his coaching business, Sam needed a minimum of 2 courts so had look at alternative venues. After a chaotic month, Sam has now successfully been able to move all coaching up to Tewkesbury Park. A FIGURE OF EIGHT This month we return to Bredon Hill for a ‘figure of eight’ walk, which links together some of the most popular tracks in the area, writes Jack B. Walker. Park the car in the centre of Beckford, either opposite the stores near the church - where our walk begins - or at the village hall. Walk through the lychgate and take the paved path, keeping the church to your right. Go through the kissing gate (1) and along a narrow path which emerges on to a road. At the road turn right, and walk up the lane, bearing left and passing the entrance to Beckford nature reserve on your right, then Court Farm house to the left. You will eventually enter the farm yard between some barns, one of which now houses a company that restores American Air Stream caravans. At the end of the yard, turn right (2) and follow the bridleway up the ‘yellow brick road’ one of the most popular routes to the top of

As the lane climbs you will see Beckford woods away to the right (famous locally for their blue bells in Spring). When you reach some cross tracks, keep straight ahead with open fields to the left: the climb becomes a little steeper here. The trail flattens out by a stack of logs and more cross tracks (4). Take the left hand path, which offers great views of Oxenton and Cleeve Hills, as well as the Vale of Gloucester. The track eventually descends steeply, and bears left by a barn to join a narrow tarmac road (5). Turn right here and go up the slope and along the road: again good views to the left. Just before a stone barn, there is a turning to the right, by a bench. This is Rich Hill track another popular route to the top of Bredon. Go up the track (6) which passes an old quarry in a small wood, then past a barn and out into open countryside. Carry on straight ahead. Eventually the left side of the track becomes lined with firs (see picture) and at the end of the trees, is joined by another track. Turn right here, through a gate (7) and walk with the field boundary to the left. Go through a further gate, and, opposite the ruins of Shalden Farm, (8) turn right and go down the hill along a sunken green path, keeping the wall to your right.
On the mound that rises to the left are the ramparts of the Iron Age Conderton Hill Fort.
! Rich Hill Track (Note: there is often stock in this field, so please keep dogs on a lead). Carry on down the hill: a stream rises at the foot of the fort. Keep this to your left, and pass the barn to meet the same track you came down before (at point 5). This time walk down the road, passing at orchard on the right, until you reach the edge of Conderton village. Before the high stone wall of the manor house, turn left (9) and go over a stile next to a gate. Walk ahead across the field to another stile by a gate, cross this and keep the field boundary to your right. The path descends to a small gate and over a stream (10). Bear right around the edge of the field and up the slope, keeping the hedge to the right. Eventually you will meet the Yellow Brick Road again at point 3. Retrace your steps to Beckford village.

Darius is holding some examples of ‘Trench Art.’ In this case, these are shell cases taken when Damascus was captured from the Turks by combined Arab and British forces, led by Lawrence of Arabia during the First World War. With time on their hands between skirmishes, soldiers often turned spent ammuniinto inventive tion pieces and unusual, which survivors brought home with them. Often designs were hammered into the metal, and in some cases rarer metals were inlaid in to the designs. PROTECTING YOUR GIFTS Well the New Year has turned, and as quickly as Christmas came it has gone again. The team here at have Tewkesbury enjoyed a good natured and largely trouble-free holiday season, and as a Sergeant not long transferred from a different part of the county, I am reminded again what a pleasant and peaceful place Tewkesbury is to live or work. We even had a relatively low rate of people found over the drink drive limit during a month long driving operation – the Constabulary carried out a total of 1835 tests and made 69 arrests (meaning around 4% failed). Now to the weather: we do get a few calls each year about kids throwing snowballs, and it is hard to know where to draw the line – most of us want kids to enjoy being kids, and snowballs are part of that. Asking your children to be aware of the elderly or vulnerable when playing can’t hurt, and may save a misunderstanding later. They should also be carefully warned that all police have to undergo specialist snowball throwing training courses and are deadly accurate, so be careful not to start something they regret later! Despite the peaceful nature of the area, now is a fantastic time to think about a few basic steps to prevent yourself losing Christmas gifts to
the small minority of people who might look to steal. In the unlikely event you were to have something stolen from you, there are a number of things you can do to maximize your chance of recovering the items. Think about marking your goods – with a UV pen, or a hidden sticker or even engraving with your postcode. Any mark that makes your item identifiable could help later on. Similarly, record the serial number of the item safely, and if you can, take a photo of it and keep it safe. This can all really help us reunite you with your possession should the worst happen. Don’t just store the serial number or photo on the laptop or phone either! One idea might be to email yourself a photo and serial number to a hotmail or gmail online email type account, they are free to create, and this way you can access the details from any PC or phone anywhere and the information can’t be lost or taken. Many phones and laptops / tablets also now come with software preloaded or downloadable that allows you to track the item via GPS if it goes missing. FACEBOOK AND WHAT'S ON IN TEWKESBURY DEMONSTRATES COMMUNITY POWER Everyone knows that feeling when looking for the hard to find Christmas present. You search the shops, you search the Internet. Tewkesbury's Rob King was looking for a special Train Set. He wanted to find one for his son just like they had around their Christmas tree when Matthew was younger. The aim was to find one in time for it to go around Matthew's tree for his first Christmas in the new home he shares with partner Becky. After a long search he found exactly what he was looking for, the only problem it was three days to Christmas, and over 125 miles away in Sheffield. The post office and courier services could not guarantee delivery in time for Christmas , so Rob resigned himself to driving the 250 mile round trip to collect it on Christmas Eve. That was until he thought of putting out an appeal on What’s On Tewkesbury on Facebook. Within five minutes he had three offers of help and a phone call from Alison Dawes, whose partner Mike Bramwell was travelling back from Sheffield. The present was collected from Mike at Alison's house on Christmas Eve. The irony of this story is Mike is a postman so the Post Office did deliver in the end. HOW MANY OF US WOULD PASS THE DRIVING TEST TODAY? Owing to the high proportion of serious accidents, some fatal, on our roads recently, it’s time to focus on our part in driving on the now very busy roads locally and nationally, writes Anthony Stockman. Hardly a week goes by, without a major incident and as for less major ‘bumps, bashes and crunches; they’re a daily occurrence. Small wonder insurance premiums are so high. The motorway’s chocker; how close are you to the car in front? How many are hogging the centre lane, but not overtaking anything? ‘Blimey! How slow can you go! Come on, get a move on!’ ‘Well that’s super! What a stupid place to stop!’ SOUND FAMILIAR? Here’s a motorway favourite. – How many times has a car, (or cars), come howling past you, only to cut across in front of you and leave at the motorway junction you’re about to pass, brake lights on all the way up the slip road? WHAT FOR!? And what about the ‘Amber Gamblers’, as they used to be called; well they’re ‘Red Gamblers’ now! Almost every day, when I’m sitting at the Northway Lane/ A46 junction, I guarantee, someone will go through a red light! It doesn’t help, (in my opinion), that on either side, two lanes converge into one, just past the lights, because this encourages a racing style start as soon as the lights change, for those wishing to win the ‘Traffic Lights Grand Prix’. All this effort ‘queue jumping’ a few cars just to get to work, or home a gnat’s earlier than hav-

I nearly had the front taken off my car by another ‘in a hurry driver’, who, coming over the bridge, decided to take advantage of the empty second lane, (which I wanted to cross), by steaming past the line of stationary traffic. But even if I hadn’t and I had taken advantage of the empty lane, it would all still have ended in tears had I not thought ‘Hang on a minute’. So, if that’s YOU, coming over the bridge towards Tewkesbury, bear in mind there just
might be someone coming out of Fiddington Lane, having been given the ‘all clear’ by a driver in the lane on your left. Those new-ish lights on Bredon Road have a habit of changing just as you speed up to whizz through, exactly the same as the ones on the A38 at the Deerhurst turn do, which is not good. My opinions about the excessive use of traffic lights in unnecessary locations, as well as the time delays built into them are well documented and there is growing evidence to suggest that my observations are being mirrored by oth-

Our basic problem as traffic density increases, is that we’re running out of patience; there are too many of us, there’s too little time and there are too many hold ups, many of which could be reviewed. But the message for the time being is: THINK, BE PATIENT, (difficult I know), TAKE A LITTLE MORE TIME and don’t just look at the car in front of you; look much further ahead – IT WORKS!...........Ever tried a push bike, or walking?..................... VALE WILDLIFE RESCUE: LOOKING BACK AT 2012 2012 was an exceptionally busy year at Vale Wildlife Hospital with a record 4,321 casualties being treated in total, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Telephone advice was also given to thousands of people, not only throughout the UK but also to vets and rehabiliin several tators European countries. More than one quarter of our total intake were hedgehogs, with 1,219 being admitted compared to 782 in 2011. One reason for this increase is due to the wet year that we had resulting in a huge increase in the number
of slugs and snails around. Slugs and snails are the primary hosts for internal parasites such as lungworm and fluke and we have dealt with many more hedgehogs suffering from these nasties than usual.

! Great Crested Grebe with (2,553 birds, 1,822 mammals and 51 'others', consisting of amphibians and reptiles) which does include a small number of exotic species usually brought in by the RSPCA. The busiest months in a wildlife hospital are from April through to the end of September and this is because these months include the main breeding season for a majority of wildlife species and therefore a large number of admissions during these months are either baby or juvenile animals. The work can therefore be very intensive at this
time due to the amount of one-to-one hand feeding that is required. We are indebted to our team of staff and particularly to our volunteers as it would be impossible to continue our work without them. From March onwards we will be aiming to recruit more volunteers, not only for the hands-on cleaning, feeding etc within the Hospital, but also for vital fundraising or helping in our Charity Shop. The volcano stands at 3718 metres, and the highest point in Spain, although Ben and Adam won’t be running all the way to the summit. Their route is over 12 kilometres, and the high altitude and sub-zero temperatures make it a very stiff challenge indeed. Ben, a partner in the local plumbing, heating and drainage business Bowers and Maber, has with linked been student University Adam for a few years now. Adam is an amateur boxer who is sponsored by Ben’s company. “Although runs like this have been part of Adam’s training for quite a while, he wanted to make this one special and raise money for charity. “Both of us know people who have been affected by cancer, so we decided to do the run for the respective charities,” said Ben.
