Repair Cafés are free events where people who have items that need repairing are put in touch with those who have the necessary skills to repair the items. These can include clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, toys etc. Items are repaired for free - and Repair Cafés don’t charge for volunteers’ time. But clients do meet the costs of any parts needed, and also make a donation to help cover the costs of running the service. There are over 1300 establishments worldwide, and Tewkesbury’s operates from the Baptist Chapel. Spokesman Bill Adie commented: “Last month’s items repaired included a couple of chairs, radios, a CD player, a model vintage car, a TV, an exercise bike, a teddy bear and a lamp. “And repairers are to

Ashland and Vine

by John Burnside Paperback, £8.99 The title of this novel, by the award winning poet John Burnside, refers to the district in which the lives of a brother and sister are for ever changed. Many decades later the sister, Jean lives beside a forest and is a retired horticulturist, the image that portrays rather suits her lifestyle. Her home and garden are a primary setting within the story. Narrator Kate Lambert meets Jean Culver happily chopping up firewood in her garden, in a house which does not appear on the map which Kate is using to conduct a survey for a film maker. Kate is hung over, and suffering from the after affects of drugs, and a life style that has plummeted downwards ever since the death of her devoted father, and sole parent. Jean agrees to answer her questions, but only if Kate stops abusing her system for five days; she does and returns to hear what is in effect Jean's life story and that of her brother Jeremy and his family. Over a series of weeks, and months the meetings follow each other as Jean reveals the ups and downs of her life, a successful business career in gardening, but also a lost love. Their reunions are often at Jean's house where exotic herbal teas and home made cakes are also on offer; but there is the occasional visit to the local coffee shop, "Sacred Ground" where the owner and her staff add an extra dimension to the main story. During these recollections Kate also recounts her own life with the film maker, Laurits who is a domineering character, and even in company seeks to be the centre of attention. They share a flat but she has her own

room, and their relationship has ebbed and flowed, but it is his adverse influence which leads to her deterioration into abuse. He is not all he seems, but their lives, embroidered with cinema history, are very much the second strand to the story. It is what happens to Jean, her brother, a soldier and then covert operator who endures an unhappy marriage, his wife, but more so their two children. A son who experiences the Vietnam War, and student daughter who gets involved with the Chicago riots of the late 1960s, and subsequently The Weather Underground. As Jean reveals their lives to Kate and her own health deteriorates we are offered a window of America in the second half of the last century written eloquently by an English author, so finely undertaken and recounted in elegant prose, with such conviction, as befits one of our best modern poets. There is so much in this book, the present day story of Kate and Laurits with cinematography as a background, but it is the Culver family who bring the book alive and make it a very highly recommended read. Nana, the round-theclock babysitter, from the Peter Pan film is a close characterisation of this breed of dog, writes Nigel Sligh. This protective dog really loves children and is gentle and friendly. In the early 1880s explorers and fishermen from Ireland and England described two types of working dog that came from the Dominion of Newfoundland, that were used for pulling fishnets and hauling wood from the forests. One heavily built, with a long coat and an active medium sized dog with a smooth coat. The larger breed was known as The Greater Newfoundland and the smaller was known as the Lesser Newfoundland or St John’s dog, which became the founding breed of the Labrador Retriever.

The larger dogs, with webbed feet, were naturally strong swimmers, thus became popular with English sailors as ship dogs. As a ship dog the Newfoundland’s job was to swim ashore with the line from the ship, for a more controlled landing. The Newfoundland was such a strong swimmer it could also haul a small boat to land. The Newfoundland, or Newfie’s history is sketchy, there are however, three theories, firstly, that they were a product of a cross between the Tibetan Mastiff and the now extinct Black Wolf. The second theory states that they were the result of breeding between wolves native to Eastern Canada and Viking dogs left behind when visiting the New World in 1000 AD. The third theory is

A Newfoundland is credited for saving Napoleon Bonaparte. The dog jumped into the water after Napoleon was knocked overboard in rough seas whilst

escaping exile from the island of Elba. A Newfoundland named Hairy Man helped save over 160 Irish immigrants from the wrecked brig, Despatch. In the early 20th century, 92 people from the SS Ethie were saved by a Newfie which retrieved and swam with a rope thrown out into turbulent waters, to people waiting on the shore.

HEREFORD HOUSE The original Georgian building of Hereford House and the 1990s design of the Library seem to sit relatively harmoniously with each other, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.

Hereford House was perhaps of such imposing architectural quality that it did not fall prey to the developers. It was the home of some of the town’s prominent doctors - more recently the Drs. Shephard lived and worked there. It was possibly named Hereford House after it was bought at auction by Dr Devereux for £575 (today £58k) – his family hailed from that county. It was described as "a very superior and well-built Private Family Residence" and next door at 80 was the home for his coachman. The whole plot then extended to Oldbury Road with a summer house, coach house and productive garden. The first Doctor to live there, buying it from a wealthy wine merchant, was F J Prior who had old fashioned and unhelpful ideas about treating cholera. Both he and Dr Devereux upsized by moving to North House, a Gothic mansion at the junction with The Worcester/Bredon Roads which is now home to 1930s semis. The Sabrina was a 700-seater cinema, with restaurant and car park, possessing, according to Brian Linnell, a “facade of plate glass and dazzling white concrete". It was named after the Roman name for the Severn and was built by Collins & Godfrey for £10,000. However popular it was before TV arrived, the Sabrina’s life was short and it only occupied the site from 1934 to 1963. Some things to check before you hit the road. 1. Probably the most important of all is tyres and brakes. Tyre inflation is probably the most common cause of poor handling, ensure your tyre pressures are correct, make sure you have plenty of tread on your tyres and inspect for foreign objects, nails, screw and damage. Check your brake pads visually to ensure there is plenty of pad left and also check levers and pivots to ensure movement is free and they work as they should. 2. Check your engine oil, 2 strokes ensure you have oil in your tank, 4 strokes dip your oil or check the sight glass before you start the bike, if in doubt change

the oil for fresh oil as it cheaper than a broken engine. 3. Lights, check operation of all lights, indicators, brake lights etc. Be safe be seen. Mitton Pre-School Christmas Concert, a success despite last minute cancellation by Ali Jones, Mitton Manor Pre-School Ali Jones, Administrator at Mitton Pre-School sent in this report which sadly missed the deadline for our last issue, but it reflects the hard work and fun enjoyed by staff and pupils at the school.

Our Christmas Concert was scheduled to be held on Friday 15th December at the Watson Hall. The children had worked so hard preparing for the concert, and were very excited to be performing in front of their families. Unfortunately, this was the day of the town’s water supply interruption and so we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the concert. We were able to

reschedule the event for the following Monday, in the hall at Mitton Manor Primary School. The staff and committee worked hard to get the hall ready, but there were nerves all round when the children took to the stage, as the layout was very different and they hadn’t been able to practice in the new location. However, the children were amazing, and performed their lines and songs perfectly to a packed hall.

We would like to thank the staff, committee, children and their families for their hard work in pulling off a memorable event under difficult circumstances. The concert was also a chance to mark the special achievement of one of our staff members. Jane Moore has worked at Mitton Manor Pre-School for 21 years this January, and we would like to thank her for her tireless dedication to our group. By Ali Jones.

Neighbourhood Project enters 14th year Priors Park Neighbourhood Project has been serving Priors Park area in Tewkesbury since 2004, and is gearing up for a fourteenth year of supporting the local community.

health, education, the environment, and community safety and cohesion. The Jubilee II building is an ideal place to deliver the relevant activities to support the above mentioned themes. Project Manager, Ruth Ward has recently commenced her new role. She has been enjoying meeting the local service providers, including Queen Margaret Primary, and The Sure Start’s Centre which are situated either side of the Jubilee Building. Ruth has also been enjoying meeting local parents and residents, and will continue to do so on a regular basis. All are welcome to call in to discuss any needs and issues they have. Ruth can then arrange for support for signposting services to meet those needs. The Project has service providers who offer support and information through The Citizen’s Advice Bureau, GreenSquare Housing, Artlift, Tewkesbury Borough Council, Severn Vale Housing and Learndirect Work Start Programme. These organisations visit weekly where they will see people without appointments offering free information and guidance through weekly drop ins. Job clubs take place on Monday (10am12.30pm), and on Tuesdays Green Square Housing host the New Friends network (12noon-2pm). On Wednesdays there are advice and guidance sessions (9.30am-2pm) with Citizen’s Advice Bureau and GreenSquare Housing who can assist with debt, housing, home seekers, computer/IT and other issues you may have. Artlift deliver a multitude of creative lessons on Thursdays (10am12.30pm).

The project also issue Food Vouchers daily, which cover food parcels, electric and gas in any emergency. New activities are coming soon such as basic ICT/computer lessons, Family Learning with activities for children, First Aid, Fire Safety, cookery, employability skills, and creative activities. Walker This month’s ramble takes us around the famous landscape park at Croome, created in the mid eighteenth century by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, writes Jack B.Walker. While this ‘there and back’ route crosses National Trust land it is via public footpaths and no fee is payable. Park, with care, at the roadside near the impressive arched gateway at Croome Court. (National Trust members may use the car park, but please check winter opening hours). Look for a five bar gate on the left, and go over the adjacent stile

into a thicket. (1). Follow a concrete pathway which leads across some rough ground and eventually out into the wider parkland. To your right you can see the Rotunda, one of many architectural curiosities in Croome Park (2). Keep straight ahead along the path along a broad ridge. To the right (west) there are sweeping views across Brown’s landscape towards the Malverns. Croome River, an ornamental stretch of water, snakes across the grassland and in the dis-

Below to your left you can see the government buildings and installations of the former RAF Defford airfield, an important station for research during the Second World War. Keep straight ahead and through a gate (3) into a small wood. Exit through a gate and walk across a field to a stile (4). Cross this and head towards a metal gate and into a meadow (5). Here the path descends and bears slightly left, down to a road. Turn right, (6) and walk on to Dunstall Common, carrying on until you reach what looks like a ruined building (7). This is Dunstall Castle - one of the three ‘eyecatchers’ outside Croome

- situated outside the NT grounds and the most distant of the ‘eyecatchers’ from Croome Court is also open to visitors from time to time. Retrace your steps across the common and park, back to the car. The National Trust Café, housed in a restored wartime RAF building, does not require an admission fee but non-members may not use the car park free of charge. Check website for opening hours.

Severn Vale Housing has teamed up with innovative Toddington-based energy storage company Puredrive Energy Ltd to provide their tenants with a free solar panel system with battery storage, which will help them significantly reduce their electricity bills. The system is currently being piloted at homes in Brockworth. In the first week tenants have seen a marked difference in their energy bills. GLOUCESTERSHIRE GIRLS SET THEIR SIGHTS ON CURVE PAGEANT CROWNS Local curve beauties, Charlotte Phillips and Izzie Tempest have won places in the Miss British Beauty Curve grand final 2018/19. Izzie, who is 19 and originally from Weymouth, has been named as ‘Miss Gloucestershire Curve 2018’, is completely new to the pageant world and very much looking forward to the experience. Charlotte, who is 37 and from Tewkesbury, is no stranger to the pageant and has successfully represented Gloucestershire for the past three years. In the 2017 final, Charlotte placed ‘1st Runner Up Ms British Beauty Curve’ and is very proud the have been named ‘Ms Pageant Spirit’ for two consecutive years and ‘Ms Congeniality’ for a record three consecutive years. Returning for a

fourth year as ‘Ms Gloucestershire Curve 2018’, Charlotte has a renewed confidence that this is the year!

Charlotte Izzie is studying Events Management at the University of Gloucestershire and is delighted to be representing her new county. She says “I’m looking forward to meeting all

the girls who have gone through the same struggle with confidence that I have. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends and celebrate our curves”. Izzie is looking to use her title as ‘Miss Gloucestershire Curve’ to raise money for Cancer Research UK. She says, “Unfortunately a lot of people near and dear to my heart have suffered with this terrible illness and every bit of money donated will lead to more research which, hopefully, one day will mean they find a cure”. Charlotte works tirelessly to support local and national charities. In addition to supporting Tewkesbury in Bloom and Macmillan

Tewkesbury, she is also a registered fundraiser for the mental health awareness charity ‘Mind’.

Izzie In December 2017, Charlotte started the social media campaign #NotJustPrettyFaces to demonstrate how people have become compelled to wear ‘masks’ to disguise how they are feeling.

Charlotte says “I really wanted to do more this year to use my title as Ms Gloucestershire Curve to promote mental health awareness and understanding. Too often there is a stigma attached to the subject of mental health and in the 21st century, that shouldn’t be the case. My generation have the

opportunity to change perceptions, to open dialogue and encourage people to talk. It’s time that everyone understood that it is ok to not be ok”. The grand final will be held at the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone, Kent on Saturday 4th August. Tickets will go on sale shortly.

HISTORICAL DISCOVERIES by Stuart Borley This month,our local metal detector, Stuart Borley shared this recent find with us. After some research,this small bronze flask, measuring just two centimetres in height, appears to be a Medieval “Christmastory”. This small urn was part of a set used by a Priest to carry Holy oils to administer blessings, baptisms, last rites and other rituals. Other examples have been found sealed with the remains of Badger hair brushes, this example was found in a rural

The Salvation Army step in! Due to the closure of the Wednesday lunch club held at The Elizabeth Wyatt Hall, the Salvation Army has stepped in. The lunch club will still be on a Wednesday, but now be held at the Salvation Army Hall in Tewkesbury. The lunch club has been running for many years serving the active elderly people in the community. The club provides a warm and friendly space, and of course a lovely home cooked meal. TARGET ACHIEVED from Joce Butwell, Ripple Church Over the last 4 years, Ripple Church PCC have been busy fundraising towards the installation of a toilet in the Church. We have held numerous coffee mornings, band and choir concerts, stalls at the annual village fete and raffles. Earlier this year, we were delighted to secure grants totalling £21,000. £10,000 from Severn Waste Environmental, £10,000 from Awards for all (Lottery) and £1,100 from Allchurches Trust, together with other money raised we were in a position to proceed with the work, and the week of December 15th the toilet was completed, just in time for our Christmas Service celebrations. We came armed with our spades - Escape from Colditz they said! But, no, Kerenza was sharing experiences of her holiday through Europe, ending with a much anticipated visit to Colditz Castle. Despite problems with the lack of trains on Sunday, Kerenza eventually arrived and spent a good two hours within the castle walls listening to the many escape stories and seeing many of the prisoners’ escape artefacts found since the end of WWII - the latest found as late as the beginning of this century. It is thought there is still much more to come to light. She then spent time at Auschwitz which she found extremely moving. A very interesting evening, even if we didn’t learn to dig a tunnel. Next month we have a talk about Guide Dogs for the Blind from Julie, who raises the puppies which will hopefully go on for further training. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Securing the second highest number of online votes the band won through as a finalist at the close of entries in November. The results of the final judging panel were published on 16th January 2018. Michael Warner, Chairman of Warners Cars firmly believes that by offering a friendly, professional and innovative service, whilst providing value for money and delivering total customer satisfaction is the reason why so many car owners have remained loyal to Warners over so many years. Today Warners Cars covers every aspect of motoring from a tyre fitment centre to offering brands including Peugeot, CitroĂŤn, DS and Isuzu but things were quite different at the beginning. Brothers Cecil and Harold Warner returned from the Great War and set up business in 1920. At first the business offered their services to the farming community, dealing with tractor repairs and ancillary items, but even then 1922 first petrol pumps in Twyning.

Warners could be relied upon to provide whatever the customer wanted, even down to the repair of bicycles! Growth was rapid as the name Warner became synonymous with value and reliability and the business soon encompassed car repairs, petrol supplies and bus services.

The acquisition of an Austin agency in 1923 proved almost prophetic as the coaching industry fell into decline during the 1950s and 60s due to increased private car ownership. The Warners of today began to take shape in 1968 when Michael, grandson of Harold Warner, took control of the car repair

Michael’s dynamic style and enthusiasm resulted in the move of the business from the small village of Twyning to Tewkesbury - so the scene was set for Warners to grow into the county’s leading motor group. ANYONE FOR A NICE CUP OF TEA? A group of powerful business men and business women, were at a reunion and decided to visit their old university professor who had recently retired and for whom they had enormous affection. During their visit the conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in their work and lives. This topic seemed to come up in almost every conversation that they had.The old professor had heard it all before. Offering his guests tea, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of tea and an assortment of cups of all shapes, sizes and colours. The business people were shocked but decided to say nothing. They did, however, look at

each other and shrug shoulders or raise eyebrows! The cups were a real mix. There were porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite. The professor told the people gathered there to help themselves to the tea. When all the people had a cup of tea in hand, the professor said: “Notice that all the nice-looking, expensive cups were picked up first. You left behind the plain and cheap ones. “Now I know quite well that it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, I want to show you how that is the source of your problems and stress. “The cup itself, I promise you, adds no quality to the tea. In

most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. “What all of you really wanted was tea, not the cup; but you purposely went for the best cups.... and then you began eyeing each other's cups. You even felt annoyed and cheated. “Don't look so surprised. You know very well that is what you were doing. Remember, too, I know you pretty well! “Now just you think about this: Life is the tea; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain that Life. “The type of cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life that you live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, you fail to enjoy the tea.” The point to remem-

ber here? The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

An exhibition of photograph’s from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is being held at Nature in Art. The amazing winning images, chosen by the Natural History Museum from almost 50,000 entries, reflect nature’s beauty, diversity and fragility. The exhibition is open now and runs until Sunday 18th March. Nature in Art is situation at Wallsworth Hall, Twigworth, off the A38 between Tewkesbury and Gloucester.
