With this in mind Tewkesbury's senior cadets, led by Able Cadet Scott Buchanan, came up with the idea of helping the local food bank. They set about promoting this with letters and posters aimed at parents, friends and staff of the unit. Their efforts were rewarded with a tremendous response from all, culminating at the unit's annual Carol Service with a huge amount of food and over £200 in cash being donated. This figure was then match funded by Lloyds

Bank to give a total of £400.00. Able Cadet Buchanan and Ordinary Cadet Leggett accompanied by the Tewkesbury Cadets’ Padre and Executive Officer, visited the Tewkesbury Foodbank to personally hand over the results of their efforts - and receive grateful thanks from Project Manager John Lowe and his team. It was a brilliant effort by the cadets, which resulted in more needy families having a better Christmas. More about the local Foodbank on page 2.

One of the UK’s best loved live performers, Wilko Johnson, is the latest addition to this year’s Lakefest lineup. The legendary guitarist is a former member of Dr Feelgood and Ian Dury’s Blockheads. He is known to a whole new generation through his appearances in Game of Thrones, and in 2014 had a UK top three album - which he thought might be his last. After being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, Johnson embarked on a ‘farewell’ tour - and only sought a second opinion two years after his time was supposed to be up. FOODBANK GIVES OUT OVER 2300Kgs Tewkesbury’s Foodbank gave out a staggering 2351.81Kgs of food in December - equivalent to 135 sacks of potatoes. This underlines the real need for a Foodbank in the town, which only exists due to the generosity of the community. The project manager and team would like to thank everyone who donated, but at the same time stress the real need to keep donations coming. The Foodbank also praised the efforts of the local Sea Cadets, who collected over 100kgs of food and raised funds of £400 too.

It has been a long wait for this short novel to come out in soft back, but well worth it. Julian Barnes, one of our most famous living authors, won the Man Booker prize back in 2011 for his excellent "The Sense of an Ending". This is a fictional account of the life of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich who died in August 1975. It is a story told in three movements, each one being some twelve years apart and the events that moulded his life, and his music. This is a political tale of fear, and repression, with apprehension of what might happen for ever lurking, waiting on the knock of a door. Opening in 1936 and entitled "On the landing" the first section is very much about the composer's fear of a nocturnal raid with the KGB coming to arrest him. He spends nights outside his flat awaiting the visit, leaving his wife and daughter in comparative safety within. During these long sleepless hours his mind recalls his life and work to date. A fateful performance that went so dreadfully wrong, in front of Stalin himself. The second part is in 1948 the war is over and Shostakovich is part of an official Russian delegation visiting New York. Twelve years on many things have happened to him, no longer afraid, but ever cautious

he is now seen as an acceptable image of the Soviet Union, or is he? He succeeds in distilling the fear the Soviet nation endured under Stalin, the threat of the Gulag system, or the single bullet. In school one day there was a major argument between two boys in a particular class, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. I have no idea whatsoever what the argument was about, but I know that many of the pupils in that class have never forgotten the lesson that they learned that day. One of the boys was convinced that he was right. No contest. He was convinced that the other boy was wrong .The other boy was equally convinced that it was he who was in the right and that the first boy that I mentioned was completely wrong. Once again. No contest ! The teacher was enraged at the way in which the boys were arguing. She was all for discussion with toing and froing of ideas but this was sheer concrete argument where neither boy was prepared to move an inch or even try to see the other boy's point of view. The teacher decided to teach them a very important lesson. She brought the two boys concerned up to the front of the class and placed one on one side of her desk and one on the other. In the middle of her desk there was a large, round object. The teacher asked each boy in turn what was the colour of the object that they had their gaze fixed upon. The first boy that she made this enquiry of said that he could clearly see that it was black. She asked the second boy what colour the object was. “White,” he answered. The first boy gasped noisily as he just couldn’t believe that the other boy had said the object was white, when it was obviously black! And so another lively and equally bitter argument started. This time it was an argument, as you will have guessed ,about the colour of the object. The teacher told the first of the boys to go and stand where the other boy was standing. Indeed the two boys changed places, and now she asked each in turn what the colour of the object was. The boy who had been first to answer before now said " White "and the second boy said " Black ". These were NOT the answers that they had given when they were first asked the question by the teacher. The truth of the matter was that the object standing on the teacher's desk was an object with two differently coloured sides. From one side it was seen as being white and from the other side it was seen as being black. So both times the boys gave an honest and correct answer to the question asked by the teacher. The answers of the two were not the same as they were viewing things from a different standpoint. I have witnessed many arguments, discussions and conversations in my lifetime. Some were constructive. Many were getting nowhere as neither side felt able or willing to change their opinions or feelings. Dialogue needs to be constructive. So, as we moved into February, how can we make sure that any discussion that we have can actually be purposeful ? It is vital that we need to look at the problem, the subject of the argument, from the other person’s viewpoint in order to truly understand his/her perspective. It is only that way that true progress can be made and that existing arguments can be resolved. Parliamentarians, take note!

Social Prescribing Social Prescribing is defined as a “non-medical intervention,” which can support patients alongside their prescription medication, writes Peter Badham I think this is an exciting development in health care which links directly into the concept of Heathy Living Pharmacies. Many changes to our health and wellbeing can be achieved by small but over time significant changes to our lifestyle. Prescription medication can give an immediate effect, but if the underlying cause is still there, then the condition will not be resolved at source. Social Prescribing is to gain beginning momentum across the NHS , with studies being undertaken by NHS Heath Education England, the University of Reading and, currently, the University of Bath. I have been involved with the University of Bath CO-Design project where we are working on the design of a Social Prescribing Service to support patients with anxiety and depression. The project is looking at how such a service can be developed , rolled out and the results

THE HISTORY AND RESTORATION OF A UNIQUE PAIR OF GATES In 1956 the first meeting of the new 1st Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade took place at Holy Trinity Church Hall, at that time located in Barton Street next to the vicarage. A competition was held in 1958 to find a design for a new pair of gates to be hung at the entrance to the hall and the winning design was produced by Mike Cunningham and Rob Messenger. The gates were made in Norfolk and transported back to Tewkesbury for hanging at the hall, where they stood until the new Trinity Church Hall was built in the 1980’s. Little or no maintenance had been carried out on the gates since they were first placed at the original hall in 1958, so as part of the 1st Tewkesbury Company 60th celebrations it was decided to have the gates repaired and refurbished. The work was carried out by a local ironwork craftsman and the gates were re-hung and unveiled on the anniversary weekend by the 2 original members that came up with the design in 1958. How many people have driven past these gates without knowing? They have stood at the back of Trinity Hall on

the approach to Spring Gardens Car Park for around 30 years and hopefully will be standing there for many more years. Anyone wishing to contribute to the £600 cost of the gates refurbishment can contact Andrew Baldwin (Boys’

Bishops Walk in 1983

She bought this shop after being left a legacy by Mr, Stroud the Chemist. After demolition she moved to Barton Street. The adverts are very evocative of the post-war era. However, it was previously somewhat notorious as a boarding house run by fireman Joseph Moss and his wife, Phoebe. In 1891, 18 persons lived officially in this small house – including two families amidst the 15 lodgers! The photo from 1983 reminds us that the “Kremlin” itself has undergone change. I just remember that modernistic stairway which led to the snooker hall (now a dentist’s surgery). Apparently, its facilities were abused by inebriated players! Now Bishops Walk is appreciated as a pleasant place to dally in the sun on comfortable benches. Why is this modern ‘alley’ named after one of many alleys obliterated? There was a Bishops Alley but that lies under Sun Street. Answers please!

How are alloy wheels repaired? At Reinventing the Wheel we repair in the region of 150 wheels per week. We offer two processes; a wet paint process aimed at minor repairs on newer wheels and a bare aluminium repair which as the name suggests involves stripping the wheels back to bare aluminium prior to recoating which tends to be for more major repairs or in the event of flaking paint, older corroded wheels and colour changes. We also repair diamond cut wheels again either minor repairs or we can re-machine the whole wheel if required. I am returning my leased car back to the dealership but the wheels have chips and scratches. Can you repair these so I won’t be penalised by the dealer? It is always cheaper to get any damage repaired prior to returning the car and we have developed techniques which keep costs low while achieving a satisfactory finish to pass inspections. In some cases I have heard of people being charged for replacement

wheels! So make sure you repair them before returning the car. What damage do potholes do to our wheels? Over recent years potholes have become the scourge of the UK motorist. Combine this with a trend among car manufacturers for bigger wheels with tyres that look like elastic bands and it’s no wonder that damage to wheels is at an all time high. Invariably the inside rim which is the weakest part of the wheel will be squared off by the impact resulting in the tyre not sealing to the rim and a loss of air. Worryingly this is not visible with the wheel on the car so the first thing you are aware of is a flat tyre. However using an innovative process and specific tooling designed in-house, most wheels are repairable at a fraction of the cost of replacing them. My car keeps losing tyre pressure how can you resolve this? Pothole damage is not the only reason a wheel might lose air. It could be corrosion on the rim itself

which results in air seeping out slowly. You have the option to make the wheel serviceable without going to the expense of refurbishing the whole wheel. How quickly can you repair wheels? Some pothole damage can be repaired on a while-you-wait basis with a prebooked appointment. Some alloys can take a week or even more to refurbish. We need to physically inspect the wheels to give a firm price and timescale. Do you offer a mobile repair service? No. Mobile repair is always going to be compromised. Painting wheels is no different to painting bodywork so to achieve a durable repair to a high standard requires a clean and dust free environment. Do you work with all makes and models of vehicles? Planning the future at Tewkesbury Museum by Steve Goodchild About 100 years ago, W. North published a guide to Tewkesbury. In it was described “Barton Street’s Curious Specimen of an Olden-Time Mansion”: ‘Closely beside the gateway (of the Watson Hall) is an ancient residence which, although the wear and tear of time has compelled repair which has swept away many of its ancient features, still retains sufficient to endow it with

much archaeological interest. The oak rail fence, and the old doorway are of a style but rarely met with, and both inside and out there is striking evidence of its having been an important town mansion in early days’.

This is 64 Barton Street, now Tewkesbury Museum. Over the years since, repairs, and a range of uses, have swept away more of its ancient features but it remains endowed with much interest. The last major refur-

bishment work done to the building, which is owned by the Town Councillors as Trustees of the Watson Hall Trust, was carried out in 1980. Since then, defects have

Local lady Tracy King signed up to the CLIC Sargent Big Buzz Challenge 2017 in memory of her brother Roger, and had her head shaved in support for children and young people with cancer. NEWTOWN W.I At our January meeting the speakers informed us that the Colbalt Unit is a Charity supporting people with Cancer and was set up in 1964 by Dr. Fred Hanna. It funds up to date equipment, housed in Cheltenham or in mobile units, treating patients from Gloucestershire and other parts of the UK. (50,000 were treated in 2016). Funds are raised through many schemes from upcycled cards to Legacies. Future projects include research into the causes of Dementia. At the next meeting Karen Marsh will talk about the Severn Freewheelers (motorcyclists who transport urgent medical items). RIDGEWAY BANK CATTERY CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY Ridgeway Bank Cattery & Pet Boarding is situated in Bredon, four miles north of Tewkesbury and seven miles from Bishops Cleeve. The business is the pride and joy of Marie Handy. Marie Handy explains, “Our initial plan was just for the cattery but it wasn’t long before a regular customer asked if we could possibly take in a couple of pet chickens because she was struggling to find anyone to care for them while she was away. We’re surrounded by rural villages where we are in Bredon and many families take the opportunity to have a variety of pets – not just the usual cats, dogs and fish. To meet the needs of our local area, we evolved the cattery into a ‘cattery with small pet boarding’ and now we look after all types of small pet including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and parrots (but not dogs). We also have ten pens dedicated to looking after people’s chickens’’. “Ridgeway Bank Cattery & Pet Boarding has very high standards: the pets are treated as individuals and cared for as if they are Marie’s own. She comments, “It’s funny but although I can always remember the pet’s name, sometimes I do have to ask the owner to remind me of theirs! But they quite like that because it shows that it really is all about the animals – they come first.” The pets are treated to big, plush surroundings and small animals are kept in pens rather than traditional hutches. “Our indoor cattery offers varied pens to suit single, double of family occupancy each with heated beds. We can accommodate all cats needs i.e. low level beds for elderly or disabled or screened pens for more timid cats and any medications can be administered so long as under veterinary instructions. “All food in included in boarding fee & your cats usual diet will be provided unless it is vet prescription. “Our Bunny barn offers large indoor runs (6ft x 4ft) we do not keep pets in hutches! “The chicken pens are 12ft square & 6ft high with individual coups inside. A total of 4,535 animals passed through our doors and we also helped thousands of others by giving advice to people from all over the UK (and further afield) on the telephone. The vast majority (95%+) of these have nothing at all to do with Nature, but are caused either directly or indirectly, by humans. We see very few ‘natural’ casualties. We did, however, deal with one of these cases recently when we had a call to an injured fallow deer buck which was seen on Bredon Hill, not moving off when approached, just standing in a field with his tongue out, ‘as if panting’. When our staff arrived at the scene, what should be a beautiful, majestic animal was lying down and looking very unwell. With the help of the person who had alerted us to the deer, they managed to herd him to the fence-line. Under normal circumstances, the stag would have jumped the fence

with ease, but he was obviously so badly injured that he didn’t have the strength to attempt it. Even so, a huge animal such as this was still able to put up quite a struggle when he was being restrained. He was given sedation at the scene, which we do not only to make transportation easier and safer for our staff, but also to lessen the stress and shock to the animal. It was already quite obvious once he was caught what the problem was but once back at the hospital a full examination revealed just how badly the buck’s jaw was broken and the damage was so extensive that our only option was to end his suffering and put him to sleep. He was also in poor body condition, very dehydrated and emaciated. Although we cannot be certain, we think that the he was most likely to his have sustained injury from fighting with another buck. Fallow bucks can have huge antlers which are used as weapons during these battles and serious injuries are fairly common. This was one of very few deer casualties we are called to due to natural causes. The majority of the calls we get to injured deer are due to road traffic incidents and sadly, very few of these animals survive as leg fractures are common when they are hit by vehicles and due to the stress that deer undergo when in captivity a lengthy

Bill Treen, owner of Treens Electrical Shop in Barton Street, is retiring in February and the shop will be closing its doors for the last time. Bill reflects on the highs and lows of a life in commerce in Tewkesbury.

23-24 High St T… (TBC 1958) Dad (Maurice) started at 11, Barton Street where I was born in 1946. Moved to 23/24 High Street in the early 1950’s. Moved back to Barton Street in 1970. Dad retired 1991, passed away in 1996. I started work since leaving school in 1968. Dad was renowned for the dances he ran in the town in the 1940’s and early 1950’s as well as providing public address equipment for the opening of the Mop Fair, sports events and electioneering! I have kept his memory alive commissioning the silver bells that are rung at the opening of the Mop Fair each year. Dad was never happy with transistors or working on colour TV’s. He was happy with valves and black & white TV’s! When colour TV really took off, we were ‘rationed’ to what we could get by our suppliers due to the high demand. We were taking our VW van over to ‘Trident’ in Cheltenham with a wad of notes and buying sets from them to supply our customers, who were buying what they could.

NICK’S MOBILE PHONE MOON SHOT Nick Jones of Tewkesbury’s Photo Studio sent in this stunning photograph of the moon, showing incredible detail of the surface, and he tells us how he captured it on his mobile phone. The image below was taken on a mobile phone! I simply held the phone up to the eyepiece on my telescope. There are of course better ways of doing this, I was just experimenting. There are various telescopes on the market, obviously the more money you spend, the better the quality of image. Telescopes also come with different eyepieces to change the magnification of the object. Then if you have an slr camera, all you need is a T2 mount and an adaptor for your telescope, and you will be able to record an image. Ever looked up at the sky wondering where a planet is, or the name of a constellation? With your smart phone download sky map or astroller or similar, and you will be able to point the phone at the stars and check their names. Some apps even show the path of the ISS.

THANKYOU Jason Hatfield has written in to thank everyone who took part in a successful raffle to raise funds for medical treatment for his daughter Isla. Mr and Mrs Browns won the raffle. Today the property trades as the Peri Hut takeaway and restaurant.

Much of this building has changed, with a rebuilt upper story and new shopfront, although the wrought ironwork, woodwork and cornices above the windows still remain.

The final property this month, is the former E Bishop, Ladies and Childrens outfitters at 128 High Street. Again, the building itself, has changed little, and today it is the home of Andrews Estate Agents. The Shopfront is largely unchanged, the cellar vents under the windows, appear to have been blocked up and cast iron plates and tie bars have been added to the first floor, presumably to stop some wall move-

ment that may have affected the building at some time. Nicely restored, it clearly indicates that in 1519 AD the building was Ye Olde Fleece hostelry. At the time the wool industry spread far and

Army under new General Maude were determined to avenge the disastrous surrender at the fortress of Kut at Easter 1915. Troops had been brought from Gallipoli after they had been evacuated – Tewkesburian served with the 7th Gloucesters: L/Cpl. Fred Underwood had been the second Tewkesburian to win the Military Medal. Driver Albert Cleal, however, was the first to die in this campaign. Serving with the Royal Field Artillery, he had died on 19 July 1916 but it was not until the Register report of 9 December that it was learned that he had “died of disease”. By the end of August 30,000 sick had been evacuated. The counter-attack waited until the night of 13/14 December 1916; 50,000 men were involved in the advance. Progress was slow – if sure – on account of heavy rain and an overriding concern to minimise casualties. L/Cpl. A. G. Taylor of the 7th Gloucesters was the first to be killed on 15 December 1916 with Pte. N. J. Mann, 9thWorcesters, the next day, right at the start of the attack. [Noble Band of Heroes]. BRINGING HEALTH TO THE ALLEYS by Steve Goodchild Before the great reforms of the nineteenth century took effect, Tewkesbury, like most of Britain, was a town divided. The ‘respectable’ people lived comfortable lives, paid the rates and ruled the town. Until 1835, the Council was effectively self-appointing, and even when it was elected, the franchise didn’t extend to poor people. Little attention was paid to the conditions they endured, and though there was some philanthropy it was by no means universal. Rioting was not infrequent, some born of desperation but some of indignation, as in 1831, when the riot act was read and the 14th Dragoons called following a blockade of the Councillor’s route to their dinner at the Swan. In ‘John Halifax, Gentleman Mrs Craik says “I was less struck by the beauty of the picturesque old town than by the muddiness of its pathways, and the mingled noises of murmuring looms, scolding women and squabbling children, that came up from the alleys which lay between the High Street and the Avon. In those alleys were hundreds of out poor folk living, huddled together in misery, rags and dirt”. That was in 1852. The cholera epidemics must have been some sort of warning. The first was in 1832. Tewkesbury had set up a Board of Health, on Government advice, but once the crisis had passed it was disbanded. The second outbreak, in 1848, was taken more seriously, though the town was slow in acting. It took a petition of 163 ratepayers, a damning report by government

inspector T. W. Rammell and two long years to establish a Board of Health with teeth. They did, though, agree a definitive list of public thoroughfares and published the list as well as fixing name signs to each Street, Lane, and Alleys lettered on strong zinc plates. The ‘headline’ criticism in the report was that the alleys were almost entirely without sanitation and as a result the alleys were ‘much overloaded with offensive filth. The accepted means of sanitation for those without drains was to fill buckets for the ‘night soil man’ who took it and spread it on the fields. Most, of course, was simply slopped into the streets or the river. The drains went into the river in any case, until about 1865. The Board of Health prioritised privies, and even where it meant

buying and demolishing a cottage or two they created communal toilets for everyone to share. With these came drains, though for household waste water it had to be poured down a grid in the alley. Clean water was a second priority, and alley pumps and wells were regularly tested for quality and improvements demanded. After the arrival of the Mythe waterworks in 1870, the Board was able to demand that owners of properties with inadequate water supplies connect them to the new

supply. Ironically, one of the most troublesome was Well Alley. Cleanable surfaces were a third priority, and where the Council had taken responsibility for the alley they undertook a programme of whitewashing and paving. In other areas, they cajoled owners into doing the same. The nettle which was hardest to grasp was overcrowding, and whilst it was recognised that better housing was desperately needed, financing it wasn’t easy, and it was not until after the first world war that houses started to be built in what is now Prior’s Park, and the programme eventually gave alley dwellers proper housing with proper sanitation. It is easy to look back with nostalgia, but it must have been an unbelievable luxury to have electricity, gas, drains and piped water

throughout. Alley cottages might have been

picturesque, but that’s all they were.

But some scams are a lot less obvious, and a lot more intelligent. This guide's aimed at helping you spot them What to do if you've been scammed Below is a need-to-know checklist of what you should do. •If you've already responded to a scam, end all further communication immediately. •Call your bank and cancel any recurring payments.

•Report the scam to the police through Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or report a scam anonymously on its website. •Speak to the Citizens Advice consumer on 03454 helpline 040506 or the Financial Conduct Authority's helpline on 0800 111 6768 How do I know if I've been scammed? •You've got unexplained transactions made to your bank account. •Additional financial products pop up on your credit report that you don't remember taking out. •Bank statements meant for your address aren't delivered - this could be a sign of ID fraud. •You're rejected for credit when you've got a good credit history. It's worth checking your credit reference file on a monthly basis to see if someone is making false applications for credit in your name. Bodywork surgery for older vehicles Repairing the body work of a modern vehicle is fairly straightforward, as many of the body panels are readily available, off the shelf, and can be replaced and repainted. When a treasured older vehicle needs restoration, it is often has deteriorated and missing metalwork through rust progression over the years. Areas include wheel arches,sills and lower body panels and of course,replacement steel patterns and panels are unavailable or at least very hard to source. Repairs to these areas can be facilitated cutting away the affected area back to unaffected steel and creating a repair patch made from a pattern of the cutaway metal and by taking accurate measurements. The real skill then comes into play when the repair patch is made by cutting and forming new, clean,sheet steel to the correct shape. An edge forming tool called a joggler enables a flush overlap between the patch and the existing metal,and then, assuming a good fit, a permanent weld can be made.

The repair is then painted and rustproofed. If bumpers or plastic trim haver been damaged,they too can be repaired,using hot plastic stitching, specialist bonders, sealants and fillers and a variety of re-texture moulds can be used to replicate the original pattern textures

of the plastic trim. Local body repair company, R T Bodysure, demonstrated this useful repair method to us and the photographs shown below are some before and after repairs to a Volkswagen Transporter, illustrating how effective car body surgery can be.
