Two stunning events are bound for the magnificent setting of Tewkesbury Abbey over the next few weeks. The Abbey, in partnership with Tewkesbury Culture's Two Rivers Converge Festival, is delighted to host Gaia; a spectacular touring artwork by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram. Internally lit, Gaia comes into its own during the evening when the light is low and there is a more profound sense of what it might be like to see Earth from space. A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA awardwinning Composer Dan Jones is played alongside the sculpture. In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth. Tewkesbury Abbey remains free to all to enter each day 9am 4pm, and Gaia can be seen during this time too, except 12th-14th February when the Abbey will be closed. Special events alongside Gaia include a talk from award-winning

Adrian Duncan is a new discovery for me. The unusual title of this book made it stand out from the mass of new books I see each week and the endorsement by Colm Toibin helped highlight disguised Irish origins. The location is the Irish Republic in 1950, still a relatively new Independent country and whilst neutrality protected it from WW2, poverty and a rural based economy and community are evident within the opening section which is based in the Irish Midlands where Nikolai Lobachevsky is assisting a team of locals led by a man called Rhatigan to survey a bog. Nikolai is a Russian, this is the era of Stalin, his trip abroad had been approved but he receives a letter summoning him home. He intuitively knows this is a death sentence and ignores it continuing to assist the small team of locals to geometrically assess the bog. Rhatigan is a man with a Republican past; a forceful moody individual. A good mixture of other locals enliven this section; much being centred on the local pub, where Nikolai is staying. The summons home and other events which unfold make Nikolai move on, acquiring himself a new identity as protection. He ends up being part of a very small community on an island in the Shannon Estuary. Here all the families have very similar surnames. They harvest seaweed and Nikolai helps different families and is living a peaceful, seemingly secure life. Again insight into rural lives add to this section and in particular his friendship with one

of the island's sons, Paulie Og. The death of Stalin brings optimism to Nikolai that his life in hiding could come to an end but there are unusual events on the island that transpire before he makes his first move. Once again it is a return to the Irish Midlands and Rhatigan where Nikolai sees how his earlier efforts have progressed to encompass the Irish Turf Board and the industrialised removal of the local natural resource of peat. This is a mere stepping stone for Nikolai's journey back across the Continent to reconnect with his family. Andrew Duncan writes very well; the odd sentence stopping this reader in mid flow to appreciate the phraseology and sometime in the future I will certainly read his earlier work. The feel for the Irish countryside is excellent, whether it be the peatland of the Midlands or the insular surroundings within the Shannon Estuary. The storyline is unusual in so much as the setting is very rural Ireland while the politics are Soviet under and post the Stalin era.

Who needs friends? What are the first two words that spring to mind for most people when they hear the name Tewkesbury? “Floods” and “Abbey” perhaps? Now the floods are not a permanent feature, despite what the media would have us believe. The Abbey on the other hand, is permanent and has been here for 900 years. It is, in many ways, the centre of the town, and is used as a logo by many local businesses. It’s undoubtedly a tourist attraction and is of particular interest to historians, artists, photographers and musicians as well as Christians from all over the country. All kinds of choirs love to sing in the Abbey with its large acoustic and a feeling of special occasion. The Abbey has two fine choirs which attract visitors to the town and add to the prestige of this beautiful building. It is understandably much in demand for weddings with its beautiful interior and delightful setting. It is there for funerals and baptisms, for space to

reflect and pray and to listen to that scarce commodity, silence! There are organ recitals and events to mark the seasons: Harvest Festival, Easter egg hunts, Christingle and so on. It has the space needed to accommodate the special service for Remembrance Sunday and the Christmas fair, always enhanced by the playing of the Town Band. So who needs friends? Well there are good friends to be made amongst the people who go to the Abbey regularly and everyone is greeted with kindness and respect. Even the peregrines choose to be there every year! But the Abbey needs friends too. Keeping a building like the Abbey in good condition takes a lot of work and money. The Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey was formed to provide help to maintain

and beautify the building and they have been doing just that for over 90 years, to the benefit of visitors and everyone in Tewkesbury. Can you help? The Abbey needs new friends. Bookworm helps local club and much more A number of local clubs have recently benefitted from grants awarded by Bookworm Bookshop’s volunteers, writes Shelby Powell. The local walking rugby club, Tewkesbury Trundlers, have used the grant to provide a new playing strip which arrived just in time for their first match in the new kit against Droitwich Walking Rugby. “Walking Rugby is a social non-contact version of the game for all ages, abilities and sexes. It’s a great way to keep fit as well as a great way to socialise afterwards,” comments Phil Cole. The club train at the Rugby Club grounds from 6.00pm to 7.00pm every Wednesday and play occasional ‘friendlies’ against other local teams. A sports first aid kit, protective pads and two free standing punching bags have been secured from grant monies awarded to White Tiger TKD club. This club offers self-defence and martial arts skills for both children and adults with classes held at Wheatpieces Community Centre.

No 12 High Street, now part of Blow hairdressers, was once an Inn. There’s still a clue on one of the jetty brackets, carved with a ﬂeece, the name ‘ye Olde Fleece’ and date ‘1519’. Thomas Collins, who was, more than anyone, responsible for the preservation of Tewkesbury’s main streets, restored the façade and added the carving. The date is a bit of a mystery though because the building seems to be a hundred years younger. Maybe it replaced an earlier one? Like many others it was a coaching inn, with the present doorway being the passage to the range of buildings at the rear, stretching down to Back of Avon. These included a malthouse,

warehouse and stables. The first record of the inn we have is in 1775, when John Ludgrove was landlord. In 1797 his son-in-law Charles Dudfield took over but couldn’t make a go of it.

m The Fleece Inn He was bankrupted in 1809 and moved to the Sun, another coaching inn with better prospects. It isn’t clear who took over but by 1812 Thomas Merrett was landlord. Described as a maltster, he had fingers in lots of other pies. The thrice-weekly coach which left the Fleece for London was operated by Merrett, Moore, Stevens and Co. (The Cheltenham stop was at the Stevens Hotel.) Thomas Merrett died in 1837 and Charles Halford, son-inLaw and also a maltster, ran the business until he retired in 1850. One of his interests was the horseracing on the Ham where he was secretary to the Committee. The new landlord was William Preece, who did his best to turn what was a failing business around. He hosted dinners for a variety of organisations, including the Conservative Association. He was a pioneer in another area; he fitted steam engines to his market boat in 1853 and it took only him ninety minutes to travel to Gloucester. He died in 1861 and his wife Charlotte reluctantly took over. She remarried in 1865 and her new hus-

band, William Morgan, quickly transferred the licence to John Wagstaff. Things couldn’t have been running smoothly because the Morgan and Wagstaff were bound over to keep the peace after a brawl in the High Street. John Wagstaff moved on (he took the Crown at Kemerton) and the Town Crier, Henry Newman, moved in to what was now described as a beer house. His was the last attempt to make a go of the Fleece, and within a few years he had moved up the street to take the licence of the Barrel.

m Fleece Jetty Bracket John Dobell had opened the fourth branch of his retail wine merchant’s business at 30 High Street (the Britannia) in 1867. In 1875 they moved their offices to the Fleece. Their manager, Charles Dyer, moved in to the apartment above. This began the building’s long life as an out-sales wine shop, as Dobells and finally Victoria Wine. No 13, next door, was bought and incorporated to increase the size of the building frontage. In February 1999, following a merger between the two big players in off-licence sales, Victoria Wines and Threshers, there was the inevitable rationalisation and the link between 12 High Street and alcohol sales ended. All that remains is Victoria Wine’s Royal Approval badge and the carving on a jetty bracket.

Habitat loss is the biggest threat to wildlife in the UK, far exceeding any of the myriad reasons why populations decline, writes Tim Hoskins. When habitat is further degraded into small pockets, or islands, this loss is accelerated and even if the total area is large enough to support breeding territories, the individual islands may not be. When I was at University, as a mature student, I was commissioned by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust (WWT) to study the purpose-built wildlife routes, known as green corridors, of a housing development that had been built with wildlifefriendly ideals. The development was over 15 years old then and WWT, Worcester-shire County Council and Worcester City Council were interested to see how the corridors had matured. I was already a professional gardener at that time and I had the idea of one day using the same principle to study the connectivity of suburban areas by looking at the gardens. British gardens contain a far greater diversity of species than our countryside and so it made sense to me that

We often put in ponds or bird feeders, maybe selecting specific food according to species, but otherwise sitting back and hoping for the best. How is it that we can look over the fence and see that our neighbour has Great Tits, Goldfinches and Blackcaps and we have Robins and Blackbirds? Perhaps the answer lies not in the food or nest boxes we’ve provided, but in the habitat provision of our garden and the wider area? It's common to take

purely for the benefit of wildlife. Can we provide green corridors off the beaten track, privately managed and for our own pleasure, but with the added bonus of increasing our local biodiversity? I don’t know how well you get on with your neighbours, but a chat

NEWTOWN WI BEETLING ALONG For our first bit of fun in this our Diamond Jubilee year of 2024, we had a Beetle Drive [not a Beatle Jive, though both take us back to the same era]. After much dice-flipping fun and frivolous frustrations, the winner of the pineapple was Sandra, and Yvonne got lemons… Jean S, the winner of the “unusual items” monthly competitions, got the Rose Bowl, to keep until next January. This year we are starting Esme’s Book Club, supporting Tewkesbury-in-Bloom, and of course throwing a WI-catered Jubilee party, with the help of our healthy funds for decorations etc. More seriously, we voted on the WI National Resolutions [remember those from Calendar Girls?] and picked the one calling for the government to address poor housing conditions in every way possible. More improvements, at the Cross House Tavern Since the Cross House Tavern came in to the ownership of Licensee Laurence Mills, the former Telecom shop has regained many of its former features; from days gone by. A new stove has been installed, in a former fireplace that had remained hidden for many years, now making a very snug addition to the building. In another room another former hidden cast iron range is due for reinstatement. This rare, blue and white tiled stove could date back to the Georgian period, and was designed for cooking as well as heating. Laurence said, “Customers love the charm and oddities that are everywhere in this

building, reinstating them where I can, retells the story of its journey through time, I have taken the opportunity over the winter to refurbish the ladies toilet too.” With so many old buildings in Tewkesbury, it is clear there is much still to be discovered, that has been hidden over the years, the secret stairway featured under glass at The Black Bear pub is an amazing example. See the world at Tewkesbury Abbey this February! A very special exhibit ‘GAIA’ by world renowned, Bristol based artist Luke Jerram is on display at Tewkesbury Abbey this February. Measuring seven metres in diameter and featuring detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions. The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. Speaking about the installation The Vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey, Canon Nick Davies, says, “We’re really excited to be hosting Gaia. We live on a fragile planet facing a climate emergency. I hope that this event will give tens of thousands of people the opportunity to wonder at the beauty of the earth. Floating in the Abbey this globe offers us a new perspective on our planet and might help us to see it as a sacred place.” This special exhibition is the headline event of the inaugural Two Rivers Converge festival; where Creativity, Heritage and Climate Connect. Tewkesbury Abbey The Star Feature in new Gloucestershire Book The final five pages of “Churches of Gloucestershire,” just published, are devoted to Tewkesbury Abbey. Gloucestershire has a rich and varied past which is reflected in its historic churches. Other local churches featured include Odda’s Chapel in Deerhurst as well as St. Mary’s. Then in Apperley, the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and in Bishop’s Cleeve, St Michael and all Angels. There are two in Cheltenham and with others from across the county 44 are included; all accompanied by attractive colour photography. In “Churches of Gloucestershire”, author Nicola Coldstream, a historian of medieval architecture, explores a selection of the most interesting churches across the whole of the county, both well known and those waiting to be discovered by a wider audience. The buildings range from rural and urban churches, dating from the Anglo-Saxons to the modern age, some displaying Gloucestershire’s wealth from the medieval wool trade, others its industrial past. THS Bulletin 33 will tell the sad history of the Healings’ Mill, but this story covers better times for the Healing family, writes John Dixon. The painting of mysteriously named “Hillfield” was signed by the son of owner, John Home a Bank manager and landowner, from 1851-1871. William Grafton Healing then moved into historic “Oldfield” and, with members of the family, lived there until the death of his son Frederick Henry in 1947. It was best occupied in 1901 with six family members and five servants - with their own hall and the whole estate comprised 19 acres. In 1921 there were only three Healings and six servants resident. The death of Frederick H. Healing in 1947 led to the sale of the home estate, now of only 8 acres, in 1954. It was then regarded as “ideal” for building.

The house, however, was converted to Wynyard Preparatory School owned by Madame Poupard, the headmistress. (Does any reader remember being educated there? See the brochure cover, right, 196265). A new wing was built - probably by the Healings, but I do not know when it was added. In about May 1965, the school was sold at last for development because of the decline in private education. The son of the then owner remembered that “there was a gorgeous walled kitchen garden where we grew virtually every fruit and vegetable you could grow in the UK at that time, even peaches. There was a playing field, orchard, rounders court and tennis court. The ideal building site then became the current Wynyards Housing Estate, built in two stages by 1995 and, in the 2011 census, there were 161 people resident. Thus, it was a better land use compared even with 1901.

Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition 2024 Supported by The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival on the theme of Weather Do you write poetry or prose? Would you like to read your work at The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in October? The 2024 Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Competition is now open for all writers of poetry and prose aged 16 and over, who live, work or study in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire. There are two prizes of £200 for the best poem (up to 50 lines) and for the best piece of prose (up to 750 words) and six runner-up prizes. The winners and runners-up will be invited to read at the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Prize Winners event at the festival this October. COURAGEOUS SAVANNAH IS A STAR, SAYS CANCER CHARITY Savannah Merry from Tewkesbury has braved more than two years of chemotherapy treatment in order to beat cancer and has enjoyed a special trip to Lapland to mark her recovery. Savannah was just 16 months old when her parents Sonia and Stewart were given the devastating news that she had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Now, for the courage she showed throughout her treatment, she has received a Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Award, in partnership with TK Maxx. Every child nominated receives the accolade, which is backed by a host of famous faces, including celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, TV personality Dr Ranj and children’s

TV favourite Mister Maker. There is no judging panel because the charity believes every child diagnosed with cancer deserves special recognition. The awards are open to all children under 18 who live in the UK and have been treated for the disease within the past five years. As well as a star shaped trophy, Savannah also received a £50 TK Maxx gift card, t-shirt and a certificate signed by the celebrities. Her brother Bradley, eight, also received a certificate. Savannah, now 5, also has a surprise

trip in store with a magical holiday arranged to take the family to Lapland, thanks to the Pied Piper charity. Sonia, said: “It has been a long journey but Savannah rarely cried at all during her chemo treatment. She is such a strong-willed girl and so positive and just gets on with things. The nurses were so kind and when she began to lose her lovely long blonde curly hair after the second cycle, I was the one who fell apart, it was such a visual shock to witness.” Following urgent blood and platelet transfusions at the

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, Savannah then spent eight weeks of intensive treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital. It was during lockdown in 2020 that she went on to maintenance treatment, and although the family thought it would be the easier part of her recovery, lockdown protocols meant family members were limited in who could be with her. Sonia added: “Savannah lost so much weight, and she kept getting line infections. I would be staying with her in hospital for ten days at

a time and our son Bradley was aged four at the time, so I felt guilty about leaving him. We pulled him out of school early due to the onset of Covid and ensuring we could protect the

health of Savannah was important to us all.” Around 120 children are diagnosed with cancer in the South West every year, research is helping to save more lives.

On the outside, the roof is being felted and re-tiled, the brickwork re-pointed, and gutters cleaned and repainted. Internally, timbers and ceilings are being restored, including the beautifully decorated mid-17th Century ceiling on the second-floor, which has been inaccessible to visitors for some years. Heating is being installed, so that the museum will no longer mimic the weather conditions that Tewkesbury’s famous explorer, Sir Raymond Priestley, experienced in the Antarctic! In addition, the rear staircase will be removed to create more space for exhibitions and storage, and to pave the way for improved accessibility within the building. During September and

October, museum volunteers carefully packed away 7,500 artefacts so that the building could be emptied, ready for the works to proceed. When we return we will have a blank canvas on which to design the future look of our museum. In the meantime, every day we have a pop-up museum in the Town Hall, with a photographic display of people and events that we need visitors to identify, from fashion shows in the Watson Hall, to boat launches on the Mill Avon, to traffic jams on the High Street. We are also conducting tours of the Town Hall cells and the Council Chamber, where visitors can see the Council’s fine art collection, as well as some of the museum’s civic ar-

MAGIC AND MINDREADING AT PROBUS CLUB!

As 2023 drew to a close Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club invited Nick Brunger who describes himself as an illusionist, magician, mind-reader and storyteller of scary ghost stories to present his show entitled “Tricks of the mind” in which he demonstrates how performers use little known powers similar to a Derren Brown-style mentalism to enthral and entertain audiences. His show was somewhat different from our usual Tuesday morning talks and Nick didn’t disappoint, getting a lot of audience participation from our members and amazing us with all sorts of magic tricks. He selected me from the large group of members to take part in a mind-reading exercise where I nominated a fellow Club member to select a number of playing cards one by one, concentrate deeply on each one and then mentally transmit the colour of the card (red or black) to me. Incredibly I identified each one correctly to rapturous applause from the

audience. Another amazing demonstration of Nick’s powers was when he invited separate members to select number cards at random and then assembled them on a stand at the front showing the numbers. He then asked one of us to open a sealed envelope and to read out the numbers of a lottery ticket that Nick had bought the previous day. Yes - the numbers were identical! He promised us that if the numbers came up at the weekend’s lottery draw he would share the money with Probus Club. Sadly, his magic did not

extend that far! RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

ALONG THE CARRANT BROOK This month’s route, which is longer than usual, follows the course of Carrant Brook upstream, writes Jack B. Walker. The Carrant is a tributary of the Avon, joining it at Tewkesbury. Before setting out please check flood warnings as the brook can burts its banks - and do wear appropriate footwear! Park with care in the village of Aston-onCarrant (reached from the B4079 by the side of Ashchurch Camp) and walk to the end of the village street. Go through the gate into the yard and follow the footpath past the riding stables and paddocks (1). At the end of the first small field, go through the gate and walk ahead along a straight path with open fields to your right and the hedge on the left. Eventually you will reach the Cotswold stone Aston Barn, and after passing the buildings the main bridleway bears left (2). Keep straight ahead and walk across a field towards a hedge. Go through the gate, cross the lane with care and go through the five bar gate opposite (slightly to the left) and take the track known as the Worlies (3). Below you on the left

is Carrant Brook. Keep along this trail, passing the pumping station, until you come to the edge of Beckford village (4). Turn left and walk along the road, passing the entrance to the manor house.

When you reach the cross bear slightly left and go over Main Street into Court Farm Lane (5). Or, for refreshment, bear right to the Old Post Office Shop Café opposite the green, then later return to point (5). Carry on up Court Farm Lane, which bears left just after a pond behind a stone wall, and keep ahead until you come to Court Farm. Follow the lane left,

between the farm buildings. Do not take the lane which ascends Bredon Hill, but carry on along a farm track (with a barn to the left) until you reach a road. Turn right and walk up the road with care (it is often busy and has no pedestrian pavement) until it bears sharply right (6). Go straight ahead along the private road which leads to Overbury Stud, and look for a gate with a yellow way marker leading into a paddock on the right. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times in these fields. Go through and walk diagonally across the paddock towards a hedge, and pass through the gates. Follow the directional arrow to a five bar gate opening onto a drive. Walk past the stables and stud farm buildings on the right, until you reach a lane (7). Cross over, go through a five bar gate into more paddocks, then into a large field via another farm gate. Keep the post and rail fencing to your right, passing a stile to meet a hedge. Walk with the hedge to your right until you

reach a gate in it at the end of the field. Go through and bear left, then keep walking along a good track with the hedge to your right. Pass the turning to Robin's Mill and keep going until the lane dips down slightly, and there is a stile and gate to your right (8). The lane continues ahead into Kemerton village, passing the John Moore Nature reserve. Don't take this lane; instead turn left and follow the path down the edge of two fields (with the boundary to your right) until you reach a small wood (9). Walk ahead following the path over a large open field, towards a gap in a hedge (X). Carry on ahead, skirting a sand and gravel pit on the right. Temporary stiles are sometimes in place here, so follow the arrows as directed for the path's current route. After passing the pit, bear slightly left and follow the path back towards Aston across the field (Y). Cross Carrant Brook by the footbridge, over a meadow then a paddock, and go back into the village via a path between some houses.
