DEVELOPMENTS AT HEALINGS MILL Following enquiries made by Tewkesbury Rejuvenation Initiative, it would appear that progress is being made over the future of Healings Mill. In communication with TRI’ Tim Wright, Sandra Ford, Head of Development Services, Tewkesbury Borough Council, wrote: “I can confirm that the Council is in detail discussions with both the owner and Historic England relating to the redevelopment of the site. “The owners intention at present is to submit a mixed use commercial and residential planning application. “In order to do this work to assess the structural stability of several of the buildings is currently underway. “When this has been

Fictionalised here as Thomas Wazhashk, the night watchman of the title, working at the jewel-bearing factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation. There, in between his regular rounds checking on the deserted buildings, tribal spirits visit him, and native beliefs are a vital strand throughout the pages. Thomas uses the nocturnal hours to pursue his fight against Native Dispossession, and it is the historic accuracy of this story which adds an extra level to this book.
Hay Stack Barnes, a white maths teacher and boxing coach, who fantasises about Patrice. Wood Mountain, his protege, whose fights are recounted in vivid detail, adding yet another authentic strand to the storyline.
Alongside the lives of Thomas and his immediate family, we also witness the life of Patrice [Pixie, a name she does not like used] Paranteau. Vera, her sister has left home for Minneapolis and disappeared, and may have had a baby.
The authenticity of the author's tale comes through very convincingly, as of course it should as she is using family memoir to tell a story about Native American repression adding that extra dimension to the story where Tribal beliefs and traditions enliven the text and educate her reader on the history of her people and the general maltreatment of Native Americans.
Patrice is intent on tracking her down, and takes time off from her job in the jewel-bearing factory to try and trace her and her child. Patrice's life is very much focused on saving Vera, and by helping her mother, a stalwart advocate of tribal traditions and remedial cures, by bringing in a wage into the household to assist supporting her younger brother.
These, and other individuals become involved in Thomas's fight with the US Government against the Native Dispossession, and the long trip they make eastwards to Washington to petition against these measures.
Her depiction of her ancestral background, evident in some of her other novels, makes Louise Erdrich an interesting author to read, and something different for these dark winter nights! Selected by:

Village Hall gets a full make-over Built in 1902, Kemerton’s Village Hall had become very run down, and quite what to do about it was a question that proved tricky to answer. Ideas for its future spanned a wide spectrum, but in the end, it was decided to refurbish and extend the old hall, and fund-raising began in 2016. Committee member Christina Kulukundis said: “Wychavon District Council gave us a Community Legacy grant of £125,000, followed by £100,00 from the National Lottery. “We were so grateful for this amazing start. After many further grant applications and a fair few disappointments, we managed to achieve our goal and, although delayed by Covid, we started building work. “After consultation, it was decided to take the plunge and build a large, new extension to accommodate Kemerton Early Years Pre-School and Forest School, and extend the hall’s own facilities too. “In designing the details of the new hall, we were very careful to always choose the ‘vin-
projector. We cannot wait to see theatre, film, talks and music in the hall very soon.”
The hall’s refurbishment was celebrated with an open day last month.

The first steam train of the season will roll out of Cheltenham Race Course Station at 10am on Saturday 5th March, making a fourteen mile journey northwards to Broadway. Heading south will be a heritage diesel railcar, which departs Toddington at 10.15, bound for the racecourse via Winchcombe and Gotherington. Trains will run every weekend during March, with services being stepped up from April. All trains will be run in accordance with government guidelines for Covid-19 health safety. The volunteer-operated railway celebrated its 40th anniversary of running

Probus Club moves forward into 2022 The festive season is always a quiet time for Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club as we wind down our talks programme - our final speaker of 2021 was Howard Robinson from Ombersley giving us a light hearted look at all sorts of different types of optical illusions, how our vision plays tricks and how everything we see is not always what it seems. Our final meeting of the year is always our Christmas party, an opportunity for some members to demonstrate their perhaps previously hidden talents to entertain the rest of the Club. After our Festive lunch in January at the Hatherley Manor Hotel, our 2022 talks programme began with a fascinating and entertaining presentation by local musician and historian Peter Gill whose talk called Surviving the Great War focused on the songs, poetry and humour that kept “The Boys” going during the terrible conditions in the trenches of the First World War. His presentation was very well received by Probus members. Not only did Peter show us many moving examples of the wellknown poems from Rupert Brooke, Ivor Gurney
and Siegfried Sassoon (all of whom actually served in the trenches), and cartoons from “The Wipers Times” but he performed some familiar WW1 songs, accompanying himself at the piano with members joining in with several of the old favourites as had been sung by their parents and grandparents who lived through the Great War. Tewkesbury’s Tannery Undoubtedly great improvement has been made to the appearance of this bank of the Mill Avon in recent years, writes John Dixon. We can only envy the occupiers their wonderful, unspoilt view over the Ham. We are also grateful to the developer, who kept the historically significant name of Tannery Court - and one tenant who also shares this knowledge with passersby. What it replaced was a veritable industrial mess, although in recent years it was improved to offer the Angling Club an HQ. The industrial buildings rejoiced in the inac-
curate name of the Halifax Works. Inaccurate because we now believe that the famous fictional tanner of John Halifax Gentleman, Abel Fletcher, was not an occupant of the Abbey Mills either - but quite possibly worked behind the building that is today the YMCA and what was Fawcett’s shirt factory. Before re-development, it was, indeed, a tannery from the Middle Ages until the mid-19th century as archaeologists have discovered

before rebuilding took place. Converting animal hides into fashionable leather was a dirty and smelly process which demanded arduous and poorly paid work, no doubt harmful to the health of all involved. The infamous tanner was the “miser,” Edmund Rudge, who died in 1843 at a great age, after subsisting on the scraps of meat rescued from the hides. He was naturally the target for burglars - who were disgusted that the miser did in fact live frugally and had nothing worth stealing! He did, however, bequeath money (£20k of his £9m fortune) to the poor of the Baptist Church. A local Memory Club recently recalled that, when the Mill Avon was actually dredged, all forms of animal carcases and horns were retrieved from the mud. We can only hope that Anglers found cleaner water for fishing and that the noxious smells of history no longer disturb the comfort of occupants of Tannery Court.

MITTON W.I. Happy New Year. Our first meeting of the year was a nice relaxed evening of ‘Weave and Natter’. We were cardboard loom weaving to make coasters. Some were finished (more nattering than weaving we think!!). Next month’s meeting is also craft based - the art of Patchwork and Quilting. Park with care in the centre of Dumbleton, near the church and entrance to Dumbleton Hall (now an hotel). Cross the stile in the hedge next to Nutmeadow House. Do not join the Winchcombe Way, but take the path on the left which follows the boundary fence of the house, and keep walking along the same line across the field to a gap in a hedge, where you meet a track coming down from Leyfield Farm (1). Go through the gap and bear left. Do not take the path across the field, but walk down its edge keeping the hedge on your left. Ignore other paths and keep walking until you reach the busy B4078 (2). Go through the gate and cross over to Mill Cottages, which are opposite. Bear slightly left and look for the drive next to the cottages. Go through the gate and walk down the long drive until you

䡵 Carvings above the doorway at St Peter’s Chiurch,Dumbleton Mill House was once the home of the celebrated travel writer and war hero Patrick LeighFermor, who is buried in
Dumbleton Churchyard next to his wife, Joan. Joan was one of the last or the Eyres-Monsell family, who owned Dumbleton Hall before it became an hotel. Bear right and walk past the old mill on the river Isbourne (to your right) to join the Isbourne Way (4). The mill was built from Dumbleton Brick: a brickworks was established near the village during the 1850s to provide building materials for Dumbleton Estate. Turn left and follow the path across the fields until you meet a lane
(5). Go right and walk along the road, over the River Isbourne and up the slope into Wormington Village. In Wormington, look for the tiny church on the left (6). Take the drive into the farmyard to the left of the church, and follow the yellow arrows. At the last barn, turn left behind it (leaving the Isbourne Way)(7). Walk down the field and over a stile, carry on down, cross over a bridge, walk up the field on the other side, until you meet the track leading to College Farm (8). Turn left and walk back to the lane. Cross over and go through the gate, following the public footpath sign, down a track which leads back to Mill House. (Note: on some maps this track is not marked as a public right of way). Retrace your steps back to Dumbleton. NOTE: The churches in both Dumbleton and Wormington are worth closer inspection.

The Abbey shrouded by early morning mist from height is a view that few will see, the winter view of the Abbey Mill and snow-covered rooftops, reveals infinite depth, as the Stars of the Galaxy highlight our solitary position, here on Earth. Why do I need to worm my cat or dog? There are four types of intestinal worms in dogs and cats as well as kittens and puppies in the UK, writes Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Vets. Roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and whipworms. In addition, Lungworm is increasingly common in the UK and we have seen a steady rise in cases over the last few years across our clinics. With global warming, Lungworm cases will increase and as a practice we now actively test for lungworm when we examine patients with vague illness.
How does my animal pick up worms?
Puppies and kittens can pick up worms directly from their mother through eggs passed in their poo. A rather clever evolutionary tactic of worms is that puppies can become infected whilst still inside their mother (puppies only) AND also from their mothers milk (puppies and kittens). As a result, puppies can be born with a fairly established parasite infection and kittens infected shortly after birth. For this reason vets recommend worming a pregnant dog or cat as well as puppies and kittens from a young age. Speak to our vets about specific treatments and protocols for your pregnant animal. Another major source of infection of worms is from contaminated soil as well as grooming themselves. Eating infected animals such as rodents and birds can pass worms to both dogs and cats. Think of cats that love to hunt and dogs that enjoy eating dead things! A serious tapeworm (echinococcus) can be
transmitted to dogs and cats when they ingest infected offal or meat and this is something that vets are more aware of with the trend to feed a raw diet to dogs. Lungworm is spread by slugs and snails that dogs inadvertently ingest outside. Dogs fed outside or those that chew toys that are left outside are at greater risk. The last, but not least, mode of transmission for the tapeworm (dipylidium caninum) to dogs and cats is the ingestion of fleas (that infected pets groom from themselves).
What signs of infection will I notice?
It is not common to see adult worms in pets poo except tapeworm (especially the case in cats). Generally the only way to detect worms in your dog or cat is to look under the microscope for worm eggs. Puppies and kittens are more severely affected by large worm burdens; typically owners notice a large pot belly, failure to thrive and in very severe cases it can lead to death. Lungworm infections can present with respiratory signs but also much more vague symptoms such as a fever, seizures, or haematological changes such as anaemia or skin bruising to name a few.
Can worms infect humans?
The answer is yes but thankfully it is not very common. Generally, those that are infected are immunocompromised individuals, the very elderly or very young.
How do I treat and prevent worms? It is essential that your puppies, kittens, dogs and cats receive worming treatments regularly. It is very important to ensure that the animals weight is accurate to ensure that the dosing is effective. Giving a lower dose than required can be detrimental to how effective the medications are Specific worming protocols and frequency may depend upon the individual pet and their risk status. We always recommend speaking to our experienced vets, qualified veterinary nurses or support team for up to date advice, and to ensure your animal.

TEWKESBURY REPAIR CAFÉ - Next session is planned for Saturday19th February 2-5pm at the Baptist Church in Tewkesbury. Honeymoon Swing comes to Tewkesbury's Watson Hall on Friday 25th February. The Honeymoon Swing Dance Band is fast earning a name as something different from Rock n Roll or Big Band, concentrating on tunes and songs for Lindy Hop, Balboa and Collegiate Shag with a few Jive numbers thrown in. Between sets DJ Steve Amor will be busy choosing dance records. The dance is running from 6pm until 9pm; tickets are £8 and can be purchased on the door. The Purple Prince Disco, on Saturday 12th March, will feature a slice of Prince mixed in with the normal excellent music and videos. This event features request cards so records can be requested in advance. The Mark Walby band was founded with one goal in mind - to be the most energetic, crowd pleasing, hand clapping, foot stomping and unrivalled party band in the industry! New local author, Martin Somers is now a grandfather. Years ago he made up his own bedtime stories for his children. SPINAL DISC HEALTH Spinal discs are situated between each vertebra. They function as cushions for the forces through the spine, stabilising structures and fibrous joints. Disc health is very important in order to maintain good spinal health. The discs are made up of a fibrous biconcave structure with a gel like substance in the middle. This allows for shearing and compressive forces to be absorbed by the disc rather than these forces causing problems to the vertebrae themselves. When a disc is under severe compressive forc-
es the gel like substance gets pushed to one side, this creates pressure and causes the fibrous outer casing to move away from the pressure, resulting in a prolapse. Much like squeezing a doughnut until the jam squirts out! Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to put the disc back into place. If you suffer a disc prolapse, gentle articulation, traction and pain relief will enable the pain to ease and mobility to be maintained. This results in the hardening of the prolapsed tissue and they body will smooth this down. The prolapse will remain and in se-
vere cases surgery may be required in order to take the pressure off the nerves and limit referral pain. In order to maintain disc health, it is necessary to practice safe lifting and limit twisting movements. Twisting the body with load, such as when shovelling soil or sand can be irritating to discs and such movements must be done with care and using the core muscles to aid with stability. The spinal discs are 90% water and dehydration is a common problem. Maintaining a steady 2 litres of fluid a day will help reduce the chance of dehydration of these structures and therefore maintain their health.. By Katie Hogg T. 01684 294777

Tewkesbury Traffic Management Proposals At the TRI Open Forum in December there was a great deal of discussion about a one-way traffic system to make our high street more pedestrian-friendly and reduce the amount of through traffic and eliminate the current chicane of bollards and restrictions. TRI has now produced a consultative document for a new proposal for a one-way system. This takes account of ALL your comments and suggestions and will be submitted to County and Highways through the Borough. If you require a copy of the living-document please contact us. Below is a summary of the findings and proposals. The TRI proposal is based on projected traffic by type and volume over the next 20 years (2042) and the additional housing developments that have been approved in and around Tewkesbury. It includes wider pedestrian pathways and more parking whilst reducing issues which block and slow traffic flows. It also assumes there will be no relief road for Tewkesbury within the timeframe and also as a consequence a pedestrianised High Street is regrettably not practical.
High Street Modifications: The current system is wholly impractical, chaotic and inconsistent. The bollards and keep-left signs are frequently destroyed by vehicles and replaced expensively each time. The paving area and parking is muddled, pe-
fumes and drivers often making hazardous improvisations. b. Paved areas: High St paving needs to allow passage of Mobility vehicles and pushchairs and a cycle way would be ideal and therefore a minimum 3m each side of the road. Vastly

destrian navigation is awkward. a. Road width: The width in the High Street varies between 15m at the Southern end and over 19m at the Northern end (building to building measurement). Useable vehicle width is restricted to 6-7m (3-3.5m each way) in many areas this is below the recommended width minimums... Badly parked vehicles together with the central obstacles often cause traffic blockages and delays of passage. Consequently, traffic flow is impeded meaning increased

OUR ALLEYWAYS with Steve Goodchild Smiths Lane used to be at the centre of the industrial life of Tewkesbury, being one of the routes for moving goods from the riverside to the High Street and beyond. Opposite the bottom of the lane, on the Mill Avon, there was a gap in the warehouses giving access to the river, and probably a busy wharf for moving goods from water to cart and vice-versa. In the early eighteenth century, Smiths Lane was Lawrells Lane. The Smith it is now named for is said to be a blacksmith’s shop on the corner of what is now Poundland. In 1836 there were twenty-four cottages in the lane, interspersed with coal yards, warehous-

housing as cottages were converted or demolished. By 1862, Joseph Firkins owned numbers 81 to 84 High Street from where he ran what must have been a very extensive wine and spirit business. Mr Firkins was one of a group of men who monopolised the brewing and spirits businesses in Tewkesbury. They are worthy of a book of their own. By 1873, a ‘newly and well-built brewery’, three storeys high, occupied the whole length of the lane, trading as the Abbey Brewery. As brewing transitioned from small brewhouses towards the global companies we have today, the three
in 1908. For the new, burgeoning, motor industry, the timing was perfect. The old brewery building was eminently suitable as a garage, and by 1911 Sidney Alldridge

had opened the Tewkesbury Garage and was an official repairer to the RAC. This business grew and developed, repairing and selling cars, motorbikes and eventually outboard motors. In 1920, petrol storage tanks were installed. A highlight was a visit by
Tewkesbury Car mart, at 101 High Street. In 1966, Bill Allen, a motor dealer from Cheltenham, took over the businesses and they left the High Street. The jumble of buildings and yards behind the garage were in assorted ownerships once

es and stables. Some were extensive operations and residents often complained about the nuisances caused. In 1831, the contents of Mr Whitehorn’s coal yard; 300 tons of Bilston coal and 1,000 bushels of coke, was sold by auction. A lot of coal was shipped into the town. On what is now the Britannia’s extension and beer garden there were five cottages, Behind them was a lane which gave access to the backs of High Street properties almost to Wilkes Alley. In addition, the lane had its own court, Sweet’s, at the Back of Avon end. It contained a further six cottages, on land owned by the Russell Almshouses charity. In 1844, Mrs Drew bought the entire court for £268. People didn’t stay long in the lane; names changed from census to census. Alongside watermen, the predominant occupation was stocking making, which became a very precarious trade indeed. One of their number, James Woodward, succumbed to cholera in 1849. In 1841, Sarah Bishop was recorded as a beerhouse keeper. Maybe her house was the Hen and Chickens reputed to have been in Smiths Lane? The area now occupied by Poundland slowly became an area of light industry and ware-

On the other side of the lane, Sweet’s Court and the five cottages behind the Britannia survived until the late sixties when they too succumbed to the mania for development which had hit the town. Copying what had happened on the other side of the lane, the High Street shops next to the Britannia were purchased to build another supermarket, Liptons, and all the land as far as the Back of Avon to build Hanover Court. The Britannia was extended down Smiths Lane to take up the area of the five cottages and everything else was swept away. To their credit, these developers rebuilt the frontage of what is now Coffee #1 and Shoezone to mimic what was there before. The rear is a scruffy wasteland, though. Smiths Lane is a main footpath between the river and town. It has been improved a little with proper paving, but it must be a prime candidate for some imaginative upgrading.

UPDATE with Pat Barber, Reserve Manager As we move into the deepest winter months, life on the reserve is still busy, but in a very different way to spring and summer. This is the most difficult time for our wildlife, and they are all focussing on keeping warm and dry and finding daily food. For birds in particular this time is called the “hungry gap”, as it is a very lean time for them to find food. Out on farmland in the wider countryside, clean harvesting means there is little grain left for seed-eaters, grubs are scarce and insects are overwintering. Many birds come into towns and villag-

You might spot them alongside the Little Egret, and our resident Mute Swans. We will be keeping up with jobs such as fence, bridges and
gateway repairs, and general vegetation management including reedbed management, hopefully joined by our volunteers. We’re also planning on pollarding a few more of the very old willows to help keep them healthy. Many jobs must be done before March as we can’t then work through the breeding season. Any threat of flooding makes an already small window of opportunity even smaller! While winter can be a bit bleak and grey, I think there’s nothing more uplifting than the happy song of a Robin on a crisp sunny winter day! If you’re on the reserve, find a bench, sit for a little while and just listen…

TEWKESBURY NATURE RESERVE - BIRD SURVEY 2021: 66 different species were recorded on the Reserve in 2021 over 12 visits. The same route was taken each time and took two hours. 438 records were made of different species over the 12 visits and logged to Birdtrack. 47% of the records were providing some kind of evidence
of breeding, from a singing male to feeding young. The highest visit total was on 4th June (38 species). The highlights were: Snipe, Shoveler, Sand Martin, Green Sandpiper, Wigeon, Curlew, Stonechat, Kingfisher, Redpoll and the incredible Swallow roost in August which brought gatherings of 500+ birds! The reserve is a local stronghold for breeding Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Reed Bunting and also for passage Willow Warbler, Green Sandpiper. PLEASE CHECK that events are going ahead before venturing out as Covid is still having an impact and plans may change.
GARDENING MONTHLY with Tim Hoskins
Winter for a Head Gardener It’s sometimes assumed that gardeners don’t do much this time of year,writes Tim Hoskins. There are a few more indoor jobs done, but we don’t just sit in a shed staring out at the rain. We’re busy, but there is choice over what order jobs are done in. I hope this gives you some ideas. Last week we gave the garden a ‘birthday’ – mowing, weeding and pruning after the mild Christmas weather. This week I’ve been developing a new garden, introducing scented shrubs to a semi-native woodland. We planted several thousand bulbs through the wood in the autumn, including ornamentals mixed with wildflower seed in a glade. Firewood is a task that we fit around other jobs, on frosty days. Sadly, the need to fell ash across the UK has provided tons of high quality firewood.
Tim Hoskins Benches always need painting. It gives the team indoor work when the weather’s bad, but it’s tedious, messy and costs me in doughnuts. I’ve got trees to plant to replace weather losses or those poorly planted by contractors. Some are new, most are big and will need machinery and the whole team to install them. We’re also planting fruit ‘feathers’ to form a new orchard near the
lake; easy, but they’ll need guarding against hare and deer nibbling. Indoor plants get more attention now. We’re introducing terraria and vivaria to our indoor spaces this year. Low maintenance ecological mini gardens! Paperwork occupies me for days. Compliance documentation need to be updated regularly, but everything is reviewed in the winter. I It’s boring for some, but I actually enjoy it, secretly. I also book all of the maintenance and
service visits so I have less to think about when the grass starts growing I need to make sure that plans are ready for the year. I have meetings with various designers and specialist contractors. Luckily my Senior Gardener looks after the productive garden which saves me a job, but I need to plan for potential winter losses, bulbs for next year and spring planting. Maybe there’s time for one more cuppa though…?

These included giving vouchers for use in local stores as well as lots of lovely goodies that had been generously donated. Volunteer Project Manager Marion said: “In total we were able to help 132 households who signed up for our Christmas Blessings 2021. “This came to an approximate weight of
294kgs of Christmas goodies such as biscuits, chocolate selection packs, cakes, puddings, and mince pies. “In addition, during the month of December we gave out help for Christmas, including vouchers and Christmas goodies to all families using the foodbank who were not already signed up for a Christmas Blessing.
