A family-run, not-for-profit, rescue and re-homing centre for rabbits, guinea pigs and small animals has come to Tewkesbury.
Rabbit Rescue & Friends was established by local lady, Jai Barnes. “I founded the rescue nearly six years ago, said Jai. “It was almost by accident, when I ended up taking home eleven ex-breeding rabbits, and from it, sprung Rabbit Rescue & Friends. “We rescue and re home rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and similar small animals. “Those that require it, are neutered and vaccinated and homed in pairs where possible.” Now, to keep up with
the demand for the centre’s services, Jai is appealing for sponsors and supporters. “The vet’s bills are our biggest obstacle so funds are vital to allow me to continue to rescue and re-home,” said Jai. “Our website www.rabbitrescueandfriends.co.uk has links to all donating avenues along with a link to our Facebook page where we regularly share bunny stories. “All of our available animals and adoption requirements can also be found here.
Bob Geldof (right) and the Boomtown Rats The Boomtown Rats, fronted by the legendary Sir Bob Geldof, are the latest major band to sign up for this August’s Lakefest. ‘The Rats’ will play the headline set on Sunday 16th August, and Sir Bob will also take part in a question and answer session in the festival’s ‘Pen and Parchment’ tent. Also on the Sunday line-up will be T’Pau, fronted by Carol Decker and best rememberered for their international hit ‘China in Your Hand.’ Thursday 13th August’s headliners are Echo & The Bunnymen, with Friday and Saturday’s bill-toppers still to be revealed. It is set in 1969 in Berkley Cove in North Carolina; a quiet coastal town where Kya Clark grows up very independently in the local marshland. She has avoided schooling, and when her father vanishes she survives her solitary life being kept company by her friends the gulls. She becomes known as "The Marsh Girl" and is somewhat ostracised by the local towns folk with the exception of Jumpin' and his wife Mabel, who help her with supplies and moral support. The storyline moves from 1969 back mainly through the '60s; but the events that form the structure of the story are based in 1969 when Chase Andrews is found dead. Suspicion leads to Kya, for no evident reason, and it is this that compels the book forward. This novel, with each

FULL SERVICE chapter helpfully identifying the year of that sections events, is however so much more than the story of the death of a young man. What made this book for me was the continual evocation of nature, the marshlands, the swamps all adding so many dimensions to this story. You can feel the surroundings, and picture the beaches, the wildlife; as the book advances recording Kya's stoically independent existence, building herself a reputation as a nature artist and naturalist. Her one true friend Tate, and of course her regular trips for supplies. This is an easy, compelling read, an interesting story supplemented by nature, but the story of the book is about the death of Chase Andrews and how that death affects Kya's life through to the new century. SPRING APPRENTICESHIP CAREERS FAIR PLANNED Following the success of its Apprenticeship Careers Fair last year, Tewkesbury School has announced that it will be arranging a similar event next month. The event will give school leavers an insight into the world of employment and to explore the wide range of opportunities available after their A-Levels and GCSEs in the summer.The event gives employers a chance to meet students looking for apprenticeships after their exams and to share
Tewkesbury School upcoming opportunities. Parents of Year 10-13 students will be invited to attend with their children from 3:30pm to enable them to better understand the range of apprenticeships on offer and how they can best support their child.

A MAGIC START FOR LOCAL PROBUS CLUB The new year of 2020 started well Longdon District Probus Club, with their first meeting featuring magician Dr Bob King, MMC, who provided a morning of education and entertainment for Club members. For the first part Bob described how he became involved in magic and then the history of conjuring and illusion, from the Pharaohs through Houdini and Paul Daniels to the present day. The second part of the morning was where Bob performed feats of illusion that astonished and baffled the audience. Before the entertainment finished Bob demonstrated ‘bubbles’ and ended up by encompassing the club chairman completely in a bubble ‘column’. Longdon District Probus Club meets on most Monday mornings at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury (together with occasional trips out and social events) and talks on a wide variety of topics are planned throughout the year. NEW MOT TEST CENTRE FOR AGP AUTOSERVICE AGP Autoservice, which is based at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, has just been appointed as an MOT Testing Centre for Class 4 vehicles. Proprietor Ali Phillips, who founded the company in 2012, said: “We are delighted to extend our range of services to customers by providing them with a local MOT testing centre. “We’ve invested in new technology and a high-tech approved ramp in order to secure accreditation, and will be able to offer in-house testing for cars and light commercials up to 3000kg DGW. Tewkesbury's shopping centre is made up of High Street, Church Street and Barton Street. This month I'm going to take you on a tour of Church Street, to show you what you can find between the Cross and The Abbey, should you venture out of the High Street. We have some wonderful shops, including Jennings, who stock a vast selection of beautiful rugs, exotic lamps and giftware for all pockets. Pretty Special boutique, selling ladies fashions, accessories, jewellery and giftware with a difference, is next door to Wetherspoons. Have you seen the Storm Trooper in the window at Wot Nots? They sell pre-loved dvd's and computer games, toys and decorative items for the home, all at very attractive prices. And not far from Wot Nots, is Helen's Allsorts – another treasure trove of, well, Allsorts! Replay Vintage stocks a wide range of fashions, jewellery and home accessories. Abbey Antiques is always worth a visit for something quirky and interesting and Newman Carpets is the towns longest established carpet and flooring shop. Fundraising for Acorns Childrens Hospice The knitted animals are well on their way and so far we have 1,100 in hand, slightly up on this time last year. By the time we begin selling on February 15th, we hope to have many more knitted. ABBEYFIELD NEW YEAR’S PARTY The residents of Abbeyfield House welcomed their friends from Prestbury and Cheltenham Abbeyfield Houses to their annual New Year Luncheon which they held at Sherdons Golf Centre on January 14th. 34 residents and volunteers attended and enjoyed a full Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings. This splendid photograph of a Co-op building provoked a lot of interest on Facebook recently, writes John Dixon. Unfortunately it seemed not to be a Tewkesbury building, despite the claim of the 1910-1950 Jubilee.pdf. It did, however, provoke an investigation of the History of Co-ops in Tewkesbury, aided and abetted by Wendy Snarey. We have found five premises that hosted the society in town from 1881-2016; the sixth is now in Northway. For younger readers: the Co-Operative Society is unique, and the clue is in its name. It was founded in 1844, when a group of 28 weavers and others formed a cooperative society. They aimed to sell their goods, unadulterated, and then share the profits as a dividend amongst the customers: as is emblazoned on the front of all Co-Ops 'Profits returned to Purchasers'.This was the unforgettable 'Divi' - was it 6d in the £? Co-op No.5 was at 30-31 High Street, 1991-2014 (now Poundland).

Lifejacket testing for Severn Unit MVS Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service spent the first training evening of the New Year doing the very important annual job of checking their automatic lifejackets. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Safety afloat is a very important issue for Severn Unit members and while members are afloat it is essential that lifejackets are worn. We make sure our lifejackets and inflation mechanism are in good order and show no signs of damage then we blow them up to check that they do not lose any air.” The Unit trains regularly on the river and also assists Avon Navigation Trust in
keeping the local navigation clear and safe. During the Winter months members participate in classroom training studying diverse subjects such as chart work, navigation theory,
boat electrics, buoyage and collision regulations but still use their boats when weather and river levels permit and regularly patrols the River Avon around Tewkesbury.

If any part of the property has been built over or is close to a sewer, you will need to check that there is a build over agreement in place registered with the appropriate authority if you are building within 3 metres of the sewer or one metre of a public lateral drain. Don’t forget a householder will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the drains and pipes feeding the property. The water authority is only responsible for the infrastructure on public land up to the external stop tap so having detailed information to hand is useful. On a recent purchase where the house was located in a rural setting, we found it was connected to the water supply from the main road but re-routed via a neighbour’s field. That’s a lot of pipework to be responsible for and we had to check that there was an arrangement in place where the homeowner had permission to access the pipework on neighbouring land in the
eventuality the water pipe required maintenance. Next month we will look at Environmental Searches which identify the various risk factors which could affect the marketability and/or enjoyment of your new

MARTIAL ARTS CLUB SHOW CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
The White Tiger Martial Arts club based in Tewkesbury, recently held a charity training session where students were invited to wear Christmas Jumpers. The instructors decided to hold the training session so that seriously ill children, or children less fortunate than others could benefit at Christmas. Each student wearing a jumper had to pay £2 for the privilege. The training session comprised of various disciplines, games and a much loved snowball fight at the end. The club raised a total of £400 which was then donated to the Children’s Rainbow Trust. The instructor Paul Wanklyn 5th Dan said: “Having seen that many seriously ill children, and children less fortunate than ourselves will be spending Christmas
either in hospital or without their parents or loved ones, we decided the week before the session to hold a charity night. I’m immensely grateful to all the students who took part and to those that donated, every penny raised went to charity. We have a fantastic track record of raising funds for charity

TREES AND TREES AND MORE TREES This year is we are being encouraged to plant a tree. Everyone knows the benefit - it is in every newspaper, on the web and on the television - Trees store carbon and clean the air we breathe. All the advertising and talk took my mind back 50 years; so much happened then in our part of the world - some will say beneficial - some perhaps not so. Certainly our skyline changed. The M5 was opened in 1971, the new 132.000 volt electricity pylon line was erected a few years later bringing the power for all the industrial and commercial expansion and our landscape was hit by Dutch Elm disease. The disease was identified in the Netherlands in 1921 hence the name but it is not confined to just the Dutch variety of elm. The disease was imported in to the UK on a load of logs from Canada. The disease is a fungus carried by a small beetle which - when the tree is mature - creeps under the bark and the spore separates the bark from the tree and the tree subsequently dies. Elm hedges, a distinct feature of our local countryside, are safe as long as they are cut to keep them small but as soon as trees reach semi maturity at about 15 feet high, the beetles move in. In just a few years our local vista changed significantly as millions of elm trees were felled as they died. We alone cut down 300 small trees in one field hedge alone but 55 full timber trees as we called them, were felled by Franks of Bristol who were licensed to fell and remove the diseased timber. The first photo taken by me with a box brownie out of the window of an Auster light plane with good friend Bob Randall at the controls - shows the trees around the village and the second and third photos show the difference between 1968 and 2020 on the south side of Tredington. It is hard to believe these photos show the same area and the willow tree in the second picture is at the end of the trees in the first. So if you get the chance this year plant a tree. It will help and they do look wonderful in the Countryside. 25 years ago we planted nearly 7000 at Sherdons Golf Centre which are now established trees 40 feet tall and helping to fill the gaps left by Dutch Elm Disease. Provided by Brockworth & Witcombe WI Ingredients: 6ozs rice • 2ozs butter • 1.5ozs grated Parmesan cheese • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 3 pints of stock • salt and pepper Wash, drain and thoroughly dry the rice. Heat butter, fry the onion brown, add the rice and stir over afirev for a few minutes. Add half the stock, boil chickly for twenty minute, then cover the pan closely and let the contents cook slowly. Add the remaining stock by degrees, and when nearly the whole of it is absorbed, stir in cheese and season to taste. Stir over the fire for a few minutes, then serve heaped up in a dish. If liked, grated cheese cab be served separately. Sufficient for two or three people. Chopped chicken, liver or mushrooms and tomatoes can be added.

STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
PRS SE SOAPBAR II It can be notoriously difficult for a new company to establish itself in the fickle world of guitar manufacturingwrites Paul Thomas. Guitarists are, in general, a pretty conservative bunch; reluctant to stray too far from the tried and trusted Fender/Gibson axis when parting with their fistful of dollars. This is, in many ways, quite understandable. The majority of the great recordings and performances which still form the bedrock of rock’n’roll, pop, soul, reggae etc were, for the most part, played on Fenders and Gibsons with the odd Gretsch or Epiphone thrown in here or there. However, in the 1980’s, Paul Reed Smith proved that with tenacity, a little innovation and a zeal for quality control, the old axis could be gently levered to one side to make room for a new and respected brand. As a college student, in 1975, Paul Reed Smith was challenged by his woodwork teacher who told him; “If you can turn that bag of wood into a guitar, I’ll grade it and I’ll give you four credits.” A keen guitarist, Smith embraced the challenge and learned the basics of luthiery as he aced the project. Much to the surprise of his teacher, Smith then dropped out of college and opened his own guitar repair shop in Annapolis, Maryland! For the next ten years, Smith not only repaired guitars but built them from scratch as well. Right from the very beginning, his focus was on high quality materials, high quality components and an exceptional level of finish. In order to sell these outstanding (and expensive) instruments, Smith besieged the roadies of best-selling acts at concert venues, persuading them to take one of his guitars back stage for the approval of their superstar employer. In this way, Smith managed to sell guitars to, among others, Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent and Carlos Santana (who would go on to become PRS’s most famous endorsee). Encouraged by his success, the tireless and enterprising Smith now travelled from retailer to retailer until he had enough pre-orders to help him secure the loan that enabled him to open a small factory in Annapolis. And thus, in 1985, PRS was born. With this foothold in the industry, PRS managed the trick of expanding rapidly without ever compromising on quality. Of course, such quality doesn’t come cheap and, along with a reputation for excellence, PRS guitars were considered to be beyond the pocket of most musicians. However, Reed Smith eventually pulled off that most difficult of tricks – shifting some manufacturing abroad in order to produce a cheaper line of guitars whilst maintaining the highest levels of quality control. In 2001, Smith chose Korea as the base for his SE line of guitars – sub-$1000 instruments which still oozed PRS quality. The PRS SE Soapbar II guitar that we have at Strummers is a thing of beauty and a joy to play. It maintains the proud PRS standards of exceptional quality and yet will not cost you an arm and a leg (well maybe just an arm!). OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild George Eagles had a butcher’s shop at 110 High Street for many years at the beginning of the nineteenth century and the alley is named after him. He seems to have lived a quiet and respectable life. He hit the national news in 1828 when a cow of his gave birth to three healthy bull calves. Even the Canterbury Journal reported it. The alley seems once to have had a large number of cottages, of the small, dark and insanitary style peculiar to Tewkesbury. They disappeared one by one, without the wholesale clearances of some alleys, though there was also some rebuilding, such as the three newly built cottages with wash-house and WC (between them) which were sold in 1872. In the same year the Council bought a cottage for £16 to erect a toilet block; it is to be hoped that this was not the first such transaction in the alley. In 1875 there were ten cottages. In 1891, Ernest Moore bought a piece of land where a cottage once stood for £2 10/-. Planned clearance started in 1919 with one cottage condemned and demolished, with another suffering the same fate in 1924. By 1957 there were only a few left when ten boys from Swifts Boys Club demolished three more. They were allowed to clean and take away the bricks to sell to help pay for a new club house to be built in Newtown on land donated by Harry Workman. The bricks were worth £5 per 1,000 and they hoped to clean 40,000. The very last alley house was occupied by Mr and Mrs Houghton. In 1965, at the height of
the debate about the future of Tewkesbury, Ethel Houghton wrote an impassioned letter to the paper; “As an ‘alley dweller’ may I suggest that the person, or persons, who want to preserve the alleys of Tewkesbury come and live in one? ….. Compared with the usual alley cottage, I suppose it isn’t too bad. The former owner turned an attic into a bathroom and there is constant hot water. The roof leaks, the stairs are unsafe and the plaster in the living room is falling, only it
pigs behind the alley which were a constant nuisance. He was fined five shillings in 1872 for keeping pigs in too close a proximity to the Eagles Alley cottages. Four years later the Medical Officer was reporting to the Council that Mr Key was storing manure to the extent that the effluvia was “soaking through the wall of My Key’s premises, close to the dwelling of some poor people, and the smell from it was beyond anything he could conceive”. The Council gave notice for its immediate
Gunner White, was captured by the Germans in 1918, and released two months later as the war ended. Jim White was in the news the next year as leader of the ‘Jim White Gang’ of local delinquents, but he redeemed himself in 1920 when he helped the police apprehend three men who had burgled houses in Earle’s Croome. In 1931, Dora, 19, daughter of Thomas, was run over and killed whilst working in Birmingham. Then there was Ernest Meadows, a blacksmith, whose problem was drink. He’s first recorded drunk and incapable at the Mop Fair in 1903, with many subsequent summonses. And fiveshilling fines. Twice he was imprisoned for deserting his wife and children, leaving them a charge on the poor rates. In 1906 he was jailed for a month for breaking into the Halifax works and stealing gunpowder. The last Tewkesbury reference to him was in 1916 in the Police
isn’t plaster but sand and dirt. The place always smells damp and peculiar. We have not seen any bugs, but who knows what’s behind four or five layers of wallpaper? No! Please do not preserve the alleys of Tewkesbury.” Soon after this the house was demolished and hundreds of years of occupation of the alley ended. She had a point, but a little more empathy with the past and sympathy for the vernacular architecture might have created a different future to the present sterility. Like most alleys, Eagles had water supply problems. For periods in 1865, 1875, 1882, 1884 and 1893 there was no water at all and people would have to fetch it from other alleys. Finally, in 1902, a water main was laid in the alley. Even then, the justification was only that it would help provide fire fighting water to that part of town. At about the same time the alley got a gas light, replaced by electricity in 1930 Pigs were another problem. Fredrick Key, another butcher, kept
removal. In 1911, Stephen Healey’s pigs were causing similar problems and the Council were concerned about pig-keeping generally in the town. The people whom lived in the alley were, as was remarked by the Medical Officer, poor. Rents were low and conditions inevitably leads to occasional social problems. The White family dynasty, in particular, seemed to attract problems. In 1891, William and Harriet were living with their seven children at 6 Eagles’ Alley, at a rent of £5 4/per annum. Son Thomas was fined for drunkenness in 1897. Daughter Harriet died later the same year. William died in the following and then the tragedies passed to the next generation. Florence, 4 months, was smothered whilst sleeping in her parents’ bed; her cousin William drowned in the next year. In 1908 Thomas and Emily were convicted of neglecting their six children, who were described as verminous and begging in the streets. Tomas, now
Gazette. He’d again deserted his wife and gone on the run. A warrant had been issued for his arrest. There is no record of the fate of his poor wife and children. The ‘front house, once George Eagles’ butcher’s shop passed through various hands until it became a private house. In 1897, on the death of George Walker, it was snapped up by the Oddfellows Arms, next door at 109, who extended the pub into the premises, where they stayed until the pub closed in 1971. It’s now Parson’s Bakers. In 1977, to cater for the demand for new supermarkets in Tewkesbury, the Government allowed an appeal to build what is now Halford’s store on Oldbury Road. It resulted in the loss of Oddfellows Passage and the eastern line of Eagles’ alley. It also created a small square which should be an asset, but which has no purpose at all. The days of Mr Key’s pigs, the unfortunate White family and the tumultuous Ernest Meadows have gone forever.

Now that we have entered an exciting New Year it is perhaps time for Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club to reflect on our activities and events of 2019 but also as a forward looking organisation, to anticipate what we might have in store for our Club in 2020. One of our favourite speakers, Dr Katy Bellamy provided us with two very informative and thought provoking talks. The first was entitled ‘The joy of false memory’ – how our memory is constantly changing and how the brain tends to erase memories that are no longer useful - and the second was all about sleep, insomnia and dreams. Another very engaging speaker is John Dixon, President of the Tewkesbury Historical Society who gave us two talks, both with Tewkesbury connections: the local Codrington family involvement with the West Indian slave trade and the history of novelist Barbara Cartland’s family covering her life, the family tragedies and her work during two world wars. Some of our talks have concerned rather profound subjects such as the bombing of
Guernica during the Spanish Civil war, domestic violence and coercive control in the home and later in the year, a personal view of PTSD by John Macartney who suffered from the condition and underwent psychotherapy for 25 years to help in managing this severe mental illness. We also had a member-led discussion on End of Life matters, something none of us can ignore. But some of our talks have been very light hearted such as Patrick Furley’s Christmas Magic Lantern show where he introduced us to the early forms of projection using genuine Victorian stained glass lantern slides. We also welcomed David Howe, a speaker whose initial demeanour suggested a somewhat dour personality, but who really entertained us well with some hilarious examples of how the English Language is used and abused.
During the year we had five very interesting coach trips to various locations. Early in the year we visited the National Star Centre in Cheltenham and later we had a twocentre day out at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff and the Royal Mint at Llantrisant. In the summer we went to the BBC studios at The Mailbox in Birmingham where we had a guided tour of the TV and radio studios, rounding off our visit with some members taking part in a short episode of The Archers! Our final day out in 2019 was in the Autumn when we visited the Gaydon Motor Museum where members enjoyed not only a lot of automotive nostalgia but a glimpse into the future looking ahead to electric propulsion and self-driving cars. A major event for the Club in 2019 was the launch of our website. Continued P37.

Ever fancied joining a choir? Sing out Strong is the first family of choirs and social-singing groups to focus on wellbeing. We run regular choirs and singing groups around Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, and also popups at local events that you can just come along to for a good old sing. There’s a choir starting in Tewkesbury, at the Bushley Village Hall, on 21st January. It’s totally non auditioning and is meant to help people improve their mental health. Twice a year all the choirs will be coming together to raise awareness of mental health and raise money for a mental-health charity. CITY BREAKS By Stephanie Jepson of Courtney World Travel The nights are definitely getting lighter now but we just need that sun to come out a bit more. I love cold crisp winter days. The early months of the year are the perfect time to fit in a little city break. Not only are there less tourists but it is also cheaper too. Personally, if I’m doing a city I like it a bit cooler – it is far more comfortable for sightseeing. Rome and Venice are really proving popular at the moment and Budapest is coming in a close 3rd. My colleague Sibyl visited Budapest and here are her thoughts and tips to get the most out of this beautiful city: ‘Over the last 3 years I have taken several european city breaks and the
most recent was Budapest. Budapest gave me the opportunity to indulge in authentic hungarian food and wine. We ate at
Sibyl several restaurants and I can definitely recommend the Hungarikum Bistro and the New York Café. My favourite place was the High Note Café Bar, they served amazing cocktails and perfect steaks. Budapest is so easy to get around on foot or by tram. I really enjoyed travelling from Buda over to Pest by tram. One of the highlights of my trip was travelling on the Children’s Steam Railway which took us to the highest point in Budapest. The views from here were spectacular.’ Sounds fabulous doesn’t it? I’m actually looking at taking a city break myself and I’m torn between Rome or Venice but swaying more to Rome. I have been to Rome before but as they were electing the new Pope, the Vatican and its buildings were all off limits. Honestly, it was like that scene from the

They didn’t elect the Pope whilst I was there so I never got to see the Vatican, I definitely need to go back. I will let you know which city I end up choosing. My little gem this month, and in keeping with the city theme, is the Italian city of Ravenna. It is in the area of Emilia Romagna (renowned for its food) which is served by Bologna Airport. It is a beautiful city and was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Roman, Gothic and Byzantine rulers have all occupied Ravenna through the ages. This city is renowned for its mosaics and has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The 6th Century Byzantine basilica San Vitale and the Spirito Santo Church are absolutely stunning. The exterior of Ravenna’s buildings hide mosaic treasures within, so don’t be fooled by a plain exterior. Ravenna is also home to Dantes Tomb. The city itself is not over run by tourists so you can really enjoy everything it has to offer. With plenty of restaurants serving fabulous food and beautiful buildings, Ravenna really is a jewel of a city.

MANOR PLAYERS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF COMMUNITY ENTERTAINMENT Manor Players originated as “TONANTI PLAYERS” by members who worked in Ashchurch camp i.e. Alan Wilkinson, Gerry Parsons, Chris Thomas and several others, long passed unfortunately. Including several service personnel that enjoyed escapism! They rehearsed on camp for several years but due to the security towards end of 60’s the Commandant as was then said we had to find alternative premises. Coincidently, Gerry, Alan and a few others actually lived opposite Mitton Manor School, approached them and we were accepted and they began rehearsing/meeting at the school and also decided to rename the group, hence they became Mitton Manor Players. It was when we had to find other premises that we dropped Mitton from our title and became Manor Players. In those days we basically performed plays, until a
new couple joined and suggested we did a pantomime. We agreed to be directed by Trevor Hampshaw in “Mother Goose”. From day one until 1975 there were no auditions. Parts were given out to those who suited the parts. All performances took place in the Watson Hall. Also charity events took place in the school itself. In 1975 everything changed. Tewkesbury had a brand new theatre/cinema opened. We were approached by the council as the pantomime they had booked had cancelled. Cutting a long story short, we joined with TADS and Twyning play-
ers, and for the first time actually auditioned for parts by the director, Derek Bell. The rest as they say is history. We have also raised some members to become professional actors and successful in their art. Personally I have been a member since 1973 “The Brides of March” being my first of many productions with
“MANOR PLAYERS” of whom I am very proud to have been, and continue to be a member. Our next show is HiDe-Hi on April 23rd, 24th, 25th at the Watson Hall. Newtown W.I. Newtown WI started 2020 with a talk by Paul Willerton about ‘Aliens’, but not little green men type! We were told about all the invasive plants, animals and fish that have found their way into the UK, some by design but many more having escaped from private collections or hitched a lift on boats. Since his first in 1984, local author John Stretton has had over 50 books published, all bar one on the subject of railways. He had told his publisher that he wanted to 'retire', but he has been persuaded to pick up his camera to do one more. HUMAN STRUCTURE As animals at the top of the food chain, we often think of ourselves as the perfect evolutionary specimens. We are sadly a jack-of-all-trades and a master-of-none. We are a bit good at running, a bit good at swimming, a bit good at hearing and a bit good at seeing. We are very good at thinking and that leads me to my focus this month. If we are all only a bit good, evolutionarily speaking, at most things but very good at one thing. We should be using that one thing to promote the others. Use your innate power to analyse yourself, your movement and your behaviour to maximise efficiency from your body. Whether that be analysing how you walk or run so you don’t strain yourself, or analysing why we behave as we do in public. Self-analysis is what can help the human structure work at its maximum. If we are feeling low or anxious, this will affect your ability to interact with people and this can lead to isolation or hyperactivity. Both are equally unhelpful to the musculoskeletal sys-

tem. Analysing how we move can stop us from over using one side of the body or weighting more onto one limb. Analysis doesn’t always have to be negative although self-analysis often is. If you are good at something and you find it easy, ask yourself why it is easy and if you can apply that attitude or way of moving to other aspects of your life. The more we understand what our strengths and weaknesses are internally, the

NEW TEWKESBURY HEART CHARITY A local charity that has been providing an exercise class for cardiac patients decided recently that it could no longer provide these classes in 2020. Undaunted, a group of regular participants has got together to set up a new charity, HeartFelt Tewkesbury, to take over the running of this really valuable healthcare service. It’s well known that physical inactivity is one of the risk factors for coronary heart disease, and that aerobic exercise can be a great help. It’s often quite challenging, however, to keep up the motivation to exercise regularly, unless patients have the discipline of attending a regular class. HeartFelt Tewkesbury aims to help with that motivation by providing
a regular exercise class, and has earned the support of the Gloucestershire NHS cardiac team. Local doctors, too, will be able to recommend appropriate local patients to join. The classes take place at the Wheatpieces Community Centre every Thursday from 2.30pm to 4pm. They’re led by a fully qualified instructor, who operates under the auspices of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR). The programme is based on an essential gentle warm-up, fol-
lowed by a period of more intensive aerobic exercises. Then there are some cooling down exercises, and finally some socialising, with a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. Partners are encouraged to join in too. Regular attender Jim Milne, who’s arranged the start-up funding and co-ordinated the setting up of HeartFelt Tewkesbury, is enthusiastic about the benefits. Repair Café Back For 2020 Tewkesbury Repair Café is back in action in 2020 with a new recruit. Pictured here wearing her green Repair Café apron, tools at the ready, is Maisie. Aged 4, Maisie was helping her grandad Jamie, a regular volunteer. The Repair Café exists to repair goods which might otherwise be thrown away. We cover many things: electrical goods, clothes, tools, toys – what have you. We can’t fix everything, but we can certainly take a look. Our skilled volunteers do not charge for their time, but donations are very welcome. We also have a café, with homemade cakes run by Friends of the Earth. The Repair Café meets at the Baptist Church 2 – 5 PM, on the second Saturday in the month, except for July, October and December. The next session is February 8th. Come along.

NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR APPOINTED AT TEWKESBURY TOWN BAND Tewkesbury Town Band are pleased to announce the appointment of Andrea Price as their new Musical Director, with immediate effect. Andrea studied composition under Peter Graham at the University of Salford, and after a short stint as a professional orchestral percussionist, returned to education and completed her PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University & the RNCM.
She had been the Director of Music at Bolton School Girls' Division for five years, and in 2019 took up a new post as Head of Academic Music at Malvern College. Andrea was principal percussionist at Black Dyke for almost a

She has previously conducted the Rainford Band, and is a regularly commissioned and published composer of brass band music. Andrea tutors yearly at the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and is on the audition panel for the NCBBGB and the NYBBGB. She is also an A Level examiner for AQA. Andrea takes over from the popular and long serving MD, Nigel Morgan, who is retiring, but who will continue as assistant conductor over the next six months. Andrea says that her teaching commitments precludes any immediate return to top flight banding but also that she is eagerly looking forward to working with the members of Tewkesbury Band and its community.

It’s Snowdrop Time Snowdrops are one of the first signs that Spring is just around the corner, writes Jack B. Walker. Living in Gloucestershire, we are fortunate to have two of the best places to see these elegant little flowers within the county boundaries. The Rococo Garden near Painswick is the UK’s only complete surviving garden of its type. Over five million snowdrops carpet the eighteenth century grounds in early Spring, and the are usually at their best during February. There are fifteen different varieties of snowdrop here. For opening times and more information, visit their website www. rococogarden.org.uk Between Cheltenham and Cirencester, Colesbourne Park lays claim to the title of ‘England’s greatest snowdrop garden.’ The collection is the result of the planting of Henry John Elwes (1846-1922), and many of the flowers that thrive their today are hybrids from his days. New species are planted every year, and there are some 250 different varieties. The park is open every Saturday and

But remember, a healthy weight is not just a number, as no two pets are the same we need to consider your pets age, breed and life stage. Prevention is best, however early intervention is essential and attending nurse clinics will provide you with information and advice on how to have a healthy and happy pet through body condition scoring, weight checks and creating a nutrition and exercise plan tailored to your individual pets needs or any specific medical requirements.

the garden except for the gardeners and , of course, himself. It was one summer morning and the merchant was walking in his garden. He heard the most lovely birdsong and noticed it came from a tiny bird in a bush very near to him. It was an exquisite little bird with brightly coloured feathers as well as the perfect song. The merchant stretched out his arm and caught the bird in his large hand. The bird struggled to get free but the man did not loosen his grip. He was amazed when the bird suddenly began to speak! “Why have you caught me like this?” the bird asked. “You are the most perfect bird I have ever seen, “said the merchant. “ I know that I could sell you for a huge amount of money.” “But what do you want to do that for?” asked the bird. “ You are a very rich man as it is !” “I know,” said Chulong. “But I can always be richer.” “Well, you won't make money through me, I can tell you, “ which was very brave for a tiny bird in such a big and heavy hand. “ You can't sell me. Nobody will buy me because “I can only sing and keep my colourful feathers bright if I am free to fly around as I do in this garden. “If I am caught and become a prisoner then my voice will become harsh and I will lose all my colour which attracts you so much.” As he spoke is voice became harsh and rough and his feathers turned to a rather mucky brown. It looked just as if he had been rolling around in a patch of filthy mud, or worse ! To say that the merchant was angry is an understatement. To say he was furious would be much nearer to the truth.
He was in a real rage and bellowed. “No one treats me like this. You won't get away with it. I shall kill you and eat you !” “I wont make much of a meal. I am too small,” said the bird. “ I have a better idea. Set me free and then I will teach you three very useful rules.” “ Rules ?”said the merchant. “Don't make me more cross than I already am. It's money I want NOT stupid rules.” “But these rules aren't stupid, “ said the bird. “ They will profit you so very much !!” On hearing the word “ profit” the merchant became interested but wasn't sure whether he could trust the bird not to fly away as soon as he opened his hand. “I promise I wont fly away,” said the bird, “and I always keep my promises. The man released his grip and the bird flew to the bush where he became colourful again and regained his beautiful voice. “Right! Now let's have those rules,” said the merchant. “My pleasure,” trilled the bird. Number One is Never believe everything that others may say'. Number Two is 'Never be sad about something that you don't have' and Number Three is 'Never throw away what you have in your hand.'” “You must think I am stupid,” bawled the man, very angry now. "Everyone knows those rules. You are nothing but a cheat!” “You are so wrong!” said the bird. Just think about it. You had me in your hand but you let me go. You believed every word I said and you are sad about not having me. The rules are so simple but you didn't bother to follow them. See what I mean? Do you see the value of them now? When there are rules it is worth sticking to them.” And he flew away. David Slater

WINTER HIGH POINTS Make sure you wrap up warm for this month’s walk, writes Jack B. Walker, for it takes us to some of the more exposed upper slopes of Bredon Hill. Local legend has it that if you head due east from Bredon’s summit, there is no higher point until you reach the Ural Mountains (which divide European and Asian Russia). We won’t quite make it to the top, but you can expect some keen winds! Please keep dogs on leads as there are often sheep grazing in the orchards and fields around Conderton Fort. Starting from the Yew Tree pub at Conderton, walk up the street at the side of the pub, and take the first left turn (1) into a lane with a stream on the right hand side, and a thatched cottage to the left. This attractive little street is known as Watergrip Lane. As the lane bears to the right, go straight ahead, passing some
stone cottages on your left and go through a five bar gate into an orchard (2). This was re-established a few years ago as a community pear and apple orchard, and is maintained by parishoners of the neighbouring villages of Overbury and Conderton. Bear straight up the slope ahead of you, and go through a gate into a field (3), keeping a drystone wall on your right. At the end of the field, go through the

gate and turn left on to a tarmac lane. After a short distance, take the track up the hill to your right (4). This is a permissive path known as Rich Hill Track. Walk up through the trees, passing a stone barn on your left. Carry straight on along the track for three quarters of a mile, with the open fields to your left. The southerly view back over the Vale of Gloucester is far-reaching in clear weather. The Cotswolds lie to the east, with the Forest of Dean and Malvern Hills on the western horizon. On a good day Sugar Loaf and the Brecon Beacons can also be seen. Take the next track to the right (5) and note the ruined buildings of Shalden Farm as you go through a gate. Turn right opposite the buildings (6), and follow the path down into a gully, and keep descending with the field wall to your right. Above you on your left now are the ramparts of Conderton Fort the remains of one of the principal Iron Age earthworks in this region. Carry on walking down the valley, with a stream to your left and trees to the right, and eventually you will come to a gate which emerges on to a rough track with a barn to the left. (7). Walk on down the hill until the track joins a tarmac lane. (8).
Walk straight down this lane to return to the village of Conderton.
