The Ashchurch, Tewkesbury & District Rail Promotion Grup (ATDRPG) has just announced a brand new direct rail connection to London Paddington. From Monday 10th December the 05.21 Worcester to Paddington High Speed Train (HST) service will be stopping at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station, giving the town its first direct link to London for many years. This is the result of a campaign by the ATDRPG and discussion with First Great Western, plus support from Gloucestershire County Council, who are sponsoring this stop on a twelve month trial. A spokesperson for the ATDRPG said “It is important that this stop is used, to ensure its survival into the new franchise, which will last for fifteen years. “The ATDRPG is keen to see this improvement to Tewkesbury and the area’s rail services and urge all to consider using it, especially travellers from northern Cheltenham, Bishop’s Cleeve, Eckington and
HST for London to stop at Ashchurch the Bredon hill villages. “Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station has free car parking and will
enable passengers to obtain a seat before Cheltenham and, for business travellers, give
extra time for possible work on the journey.” Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station is just off the A46, near M5 junction nine. It is served by regular buses from the town centre. PUPILS SEE RED AND HELP FEED THOSE IN NEED Generous pupils from Tewkesbury’s John Moore Primary School and local couriers RED joined forces to help feed hungry county residents in need. Each of the school’s 212 pupils were invited to take non-perishable food items to school from a ‘shopping list’ provided by Gloucester food bank. And the 4 – 11-yearolds turned up to class with everything from cartons of fruit juice to tins of veg, rice pudding, and baked beans, plus biscuits and treats for children. In all, an amazing 190 kilograms of food was gathered. To ensure the goods
were delivered safely, Stefan Roberts, from Te w k e s b u r y - b a s e d Roberts Express Deliveries (RED), volunteered to use one of his courier vans to load and transport the goods to the food bank. Miss Sally King, Head Teacher at the John Moore Primary School, said: “We did a collection for the food bank last year and it was so successful we decided to repeat it this year.
“Previously we have supported overseas charity so it’s nice to donate to a county charity to help people in need locally. “It’s an event that can be very low cost for pupils to support but when everyone donates something, it’s amazing how much is collected. “We’re also very grateful to RED for transporting the food free of charge. It worked very well and was a great team effort!”

HALLOWEEN FUN AT THE WHEATPIECES: A number of groups and clubs that meet at Wheatpieces Community Centre joined in fun Halloween celebrations. The Zumba girls held a 'Thriller, Monster Mash, Ghostbusting, freaky evening' with optional fancy dress. Members of White Tiger Taekwondo Club (pictured above) enjoyed fun and games plus Halloween themed challenges with their instructors, Paul and Jill Wanklyn. These included an invitation to 'eat the brain', a 'flying broom sticks' style assault course, and a rather energetic balloon bursting competition. No Halloween event would be complete without a 'best dressed' costume contest, and this was won by student Tasmin.

A community-based project that uses twoway volunteering to reward people for the time and effort they put into their neighbourhood has opened in Tewkesbury. Christmas Poems and Pints A fundraiser for the ‘Arrivall’ sculptures planned to create a landmark gateway to Tewkesbury will take place at Theoc House this month. A Christmas themed ‘Poems and Pints’ evening in the Library Room of the Barton Street inn is being held at 7.30pm on Monday 17th December. KATE HOPES FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE Local military wife Kate Robertson is hoping to raise £5000 for the charity Help for Heroes, by taking part in a gruelling trek to Everest Base Camp. She will be part of a team setting out from Kathmandu next year, to walk to the starting point for climbers scaling the world’s highest mountain. The base camp is located 5540 metes (18,175 feet) above sea level - roughly eighteen times the height of Cleeve Hill. Kate is 33 and lives in Tewkesbury. She is married to Neil, who serves in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers. Kate is one of Help for Heroes volunteer coordinators for the county, and became inspired to take up her own challenge after seeing a group of injured servicemen and women having a go at wing walking. “Being a military wife means that I see a lot of people doing a lot of different things, but it is always the military personnel doing them,” said Kate. “We do always support them and we all think that they are an inspiration, but it tends

There, listed on the challenges for 2013, was the Everest Base Camp Trek.” This is one tough challenge to take on, but Kate has been given the all clear by her GP, so now it is all systems go. “Over eighteen days we will travel out to Kathmandu in Nepal, where we will begin our acclimatisation, then we continue on to Lukla where we will start out trek up to Everest Base
Camp. Lukla is at 2840m and for nine days we will continue to trek upwards (2705m) to the base camp,” said Kate. “Altitude sickness will play a huge part in this, so the pace will be slow and steady. Once we arrive and get to take in the fact that we have achieved our goal, we get to turn around and head back.” “Daily treks will range from 5-8 hours a day, and unfortunately all uphill! At the moment I am very nervous but know that I have great support and still have a number of months to get the required training in.” Kate is very grateful to several Tewkesbury businesses, including The Button Draw, The Paint Pot and Kudos, who have all been wonderful supporters of the trek and have help to raise over £700 towards Kate’s target of £5,000. Help for Heroes is set to benefit from two events locally this month. The charity is having a stall at Cheltenham Christmas market (Saturday 8th December) and it will be one of four charities benefiting from a race day on Friday 14th December. The enrolment meeting in September was an occasion for old timers to get together over a cup of coffee as well as an opportunity to say hello to new members. It also enabled our many interest groups to set out their stalls so that we could all, old and new members alike, decide what to dip into in the coming year. Should it be bridge, art, gardens, French or something a bit more physical such as bowls, table tennis or walking? Highlights from the last couple of months have included a garden visit to Church Cottage in Defford, seminars on Goya and Edward Lutyens, a talk on things you might not know about Tewkesbury, a trip to the Natural History Museum in London, and a visit to Bletchley Park, which provided an extremely interesting

Large crowds gathered at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick to witness the spectacular fireworks display held at the popular watersports centre. All profits from the event will be donated to the Air Ambulance.

Despite heavy rain on the evening, a large and enthusiastic crowd enjoyed Tewkesbury Rotary Club’s annual fireworks spectacular last month. Town Mayor Ken Powell lit the bonfire which soon helped warm the spectators until the fireworks cbegan against the backdrop of Tewkesbury Abbey. The bucket collection was well supported and in excess of £2500 was donated. The Third Tewkesbury Scouts provided hot dogs and burgers, and a funfair was available during the evening. The Rotary Club has asked us to extend their thanks to everyone who helped on the day to make the event such a great success.

Tewkesbury Streets Paved with Italian Food Tewkesbury enjoyed a two day festive event last month with continental style markets and promotions throughout the town, writes Shelby Powell. The event was launched with a popular outdoor Italian market in Cascades car park, while the Town Hall was packed with Flavours of Italy, an indoor market organised by the Discover Tewkesbury Team. Local stallholders and retailers offered a wide choice of quality produce all complemented by beautiful gifts made by members of the Guiding Association and talented year 9 pupils (pictured) from Tewkesbury School. High Street retailers and outlets displaying green, white and red bunting offered special menus and promotions, with some being served from the pavement for a real Continental feel.

‘A Tudor Christmas Night’ is being organised at the museum in Barton Street on Saturday 15th December (7pm-9pm). Visitors can enjoy an evening candlelit tour of the Merchant’s House with a warming glass of mulled wine and mince pies. They will discover how the Christmas celebration had come to be, and how people in Elizabethan England would have celebrated the twelve days of Christmas. Topics such as food and drink, customs, festivities and what presents you might have expected 400 years ago will be covered. The cost is £6 per ticket per adult, including mulled wine and a mince pie. Accompanied children are admitted free. Later in the month, the John Moore Museum welcomes Midlands based J.R.C.S Falconry for a festive ‘Birds of
Spellbound: children at a previous Tudor event Prey Day.’ From 10am1pm and 2pm-5pm on Sat 29th December, visitors to the museum can meet a kestrel, buzzard, Peregrine falcon, a barn owl and an eagle owl and learn all about these amazing creatures. A falconer will be in the museum to answer questions on birds of prey and the ancient art of falconry. Tickets are £3 for adults and £2 for children. Family tickets are £8. The Tewkesbury Town Centre Community Engagement Advisory Group (CEAG) is celebrating after finding out it has been awarded £10,000 of Government funding. The funding and support package is part of the Mary Portas Town Team Initiative, aimed at improving high streets and make them the beating hearts of their communities. As part of the initiative, Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson teamed up with the borough council and CEAG to sign a national pledge to make Tewkesbury a Town Team Partner. The Town Team, will use the £10,000 funding to develop projects that support the high street
and help engage local people with the town centre. This may include development of a local enterprise hub, looking at ways to improve the town’s night time economy, and activities for a more vibrant town centre especially out of season. In addition to the funding, Tewkesbury will also get support from a range experts, access special national events and meet with other Town Teams to share experiences and lessons learned.

TEWKESBURY GROUP BRINGS CHRISTMAS CHEER TO CHILDREN Members of M5Nine group from Tewkesbury are hoping to bring some cheer to deprived children at Christmas by supporting the work of Operation Christmas Child, writes Shelby Powell. A team of hardworking volunteers gave up their time to fill shoe boxes of goodies to make a real difference to youngsters living abroad, who would otherwise have very little to look forward to at this special time of the year. The boxes are packed with items such as small gifts, treats, cuddly toys, colouring books and crayons. They were taken from Tewkesbury to a depot in Evesham to
be distributed to youngsters most in need. Spokeswoman Petro Else comments “We as a church find it pleasure and huge privilege to serve the community and those in need. “It was most enjoyable to fill the shoeboxes ready to be send off to precious children. We hope to fill up to 60 boxes this year.” MS5Nine meets at the Wheatpieces Community Centre in Walton Cardiff.

Chasing That Sweet Rhythm Debbie Arthurs, owner of Tewkesbury’s Jelly Roll Café, has been tackling the nation’s jazz and swing music scene, writes Rob Wakerley. Debbie Arthurs began drumming at a young age, but never initially saw herself as a vocalist. Once she joined a local jazz band at the age of 17, she learnt how to drum in the swing style of the 1920’s and 30’s. Her mentor at the time suggested she had a go at singing, so she did - and it worked out. The unforgettable tone that is Debbie Arthurs’ voice then came on to head the band, called the ‘Charleston Chasers’. From 1987 to present, the Charleston Chasers have brought quality jazz and swing music across the nation. Their performance venues

TURKISH AMBASSADOR’S DELIGHT Turkey's Ambassador to London, Ahmet Ünal Çeviköz and his wife Emel, enjoyed Sunday lunch on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway's 'Elegant Excursions' dining train last month. The train was hauled by ex-TCDD (Turkish State Railways) 8F class locomotive no. 45160, which is now based on the heritage railway line at Toddington. Jack Boskett took the couple’s photo next to the historic engine, which was one of three built in Glasgow an exported to Turkey after the second world war.

Family breakdown is a traumatic time for the whole family, the parties involved in the breakdown, the kids in particular but also often forgotten the extended family. Parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews yes even friends and neighbours are all affected in one way or another. They may be experiencing such emotions as embarrassment, sorrow, and feelings of desperation to name but a few. Children may have emotions of self blame, sadness, fear, despair, shock, as will the parties involved: all of the emotions you can think of all rolled into one. All of these put together cause panic, and without seeing a way out can cause fear leading to anger and that causes even more problems. These may result in involving the children in adult disputes, getting relatives to take sides and being generally horrible to each other.
If things were going well we would never ever consider acting in this way to our families and we would never believe we would. We don’t need to behave badly in times of family breakdown; it's hard not to, but we have to be adult and look after those near and dear to us. What is needed is a clear head, a plan to work to and some interim ground rules to work with, to tie over while things are being sorted. The parties may be too involved to do this
themselves, so this is where an experienced solicitor is invaluable. One who has not only been trained traditionally but also in different aspect of dispute resolution such as mediation and collaboration and a resolution credited specialist, who can give options and ideas to move the mater forward. This example sold for £50 at a recent sale of toys and collectables at Church Street Auctions.
MARTIAL ARTS AWARD FOR JENNIE Wheatpieces’ resident, Jennie Theedam, is celebrating after recently gaining a martial arts award, writes Shelby Powell. Jennie, who attends Master Harrison’s Family Tae Kwon Do Club based at Tewkesbury School, has spent the last two years training for her second dan black belt. To help her to build up her strength and stamina for such a rigorous grading, she recruited a personal trainer, John Cooper from Gravity Fitness to help her. Jennie (pictured with John, above right) said: “John helped me by tailoring a course of weekly personal fitness sessions to my specific needs offering me encouragement and guidance when I needed it the most. The nutritional advice helped me reach my optimum performance, and as a bonus I toned up and even lost a little weight.” John, who has a degree in BSc Sport and Exercise Science, runs Gravity Fitness with his partner Suzanne Meadon offering personal training and weekly exercise classes in Tewkesbury.

Pet owners in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit and living in the GL20 postcode area are eligible to access veterinary treatment funded by leading veterinary charity, PDSA, at the Folly Gardens and Coldicott Veterinary PetAid practices in Tewkesbury. Current figures show that only 5% of eligible households in Tewkesbury have registered their pets for PDSAfunded treatment meaning that many are missing out on this valuable service for their beloved pets. Planting a Tree for the Jubilee Members of Newtown, Tewkesbury, WI have planted a tree to commemorate the Diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. WI President, Margaret Gunston, and other members performed the ceremony last month, on the wide grass verge between Ashchurch Road and Knight’s Way (opposite Canterbury Business Centre). The chosen tree was a 7’ White Beam, Sorbus aria lutescens, which was planted complete with a tree guard and special watering tube. The preparation was undertaken by John Vine and his team from Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Grounds Maintenance.
TEWKESBURY MARKET’S FUTURE IS SECURED It’s good news for market-goers in Tewkesbury as the future of the town’s main weekly market has been secured for the next three years. Tewkesbury Borough Council and Grenchurch Markets Limited have agreed a new three year licence, which secures the market’s future until January 2015. The partnership between the council and the market organiser means local residents and visitors to Tewkesbury can continue to enjoy the market, which has a wide range of goods on offer.
Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Dave Waters said: “I am delighted that we have entered into this new agreement with Grenchurch. NURSING BIRDS OF PREY I really ought to be writing about hedgehogs again this time, as 240 of the total 311 casualties in care at Vale Wildlife Hospital are prickly patients. We’ve never known anything like it in our 28 years. So far this year we have treated well over 1,000 hedgehogs, whereas the total for the whole of 2011 was only around 780, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. However, to give you a break from hogs, how about birds of prey for a change? Several bird of prey species are dealt with at Vale Wildlife throughout a typical year: owls such as barn, tawny and little, plus kestrels, sparrowhawks and buzzards are all fairly common. We also care for some of the more unusual species such as shorteared owls, hobbys, peregrine falcons and red kites. Unfortunately, any injury to the wings or eyes of birds of prey can often result in euthanasia being our only option, unless it is a minor problem. If a pigeon for example has a wing injury which leaves the bird’s flying ability less than perfect, it will often cope adequately, flying ‘with a limp’ (as we call it) as they do not rely on perfect flight for their sur-

A bird of prey on the other hand, is reliant on its flight and sight for accurate hunting and if not 100% fit and healthy it will quickly deteriorate as it will not be able to find food. What is the main reason that birds of prey end up needing treatment at Vale? As with a large number of species, a huge cause of injury and death to birds of prey is the car. As the number of vehicles on our roads
continues to rise, it is inevitable that more and more animals are going to become statistics of our ever-growing population. Often the injuries sustained are too severe to treat but cases of concussion and wounds not involving any skeletal fractures can be successfully treated, resulting in the best part of our job….release back into the wild. Tawny owls, that have very large eyes for
their size, often suffer from irreparable damage such as detached retinas following impact so their eyes need to be professionally examined to detect injury which is not obvious during our initial examinations. Birds such as tawny owls and buzzards are frequently treated for a protozoan parasite known as canker (trichomoniasis) which is commonly passed to these species from eating infected pigeons (the most common species to suffer from this problem). The disease eventually causes the throat to become totally blocked with dense plaque leading to the bird being unable to pass any food past the obstruction and starvation is often the outcome. In 2011 the number of birds of prey admitted to Vale Wildlife Hospital were: tawny owl 53, barn owl 13, little owl 6, sparrowhawk 29, buzzard 55, kestrel 14. ZUMBATHON RAISES FUNDS FOR LIGHTS Kind hearted Zumba instructor, Sue Adsett, gave up a Saturday afternoon last month to arrange a charity Zumbathon to raise funds for Tewkesbury's Christmas Lights appeal. Aided by her partner, John, and daughters Kirsty McLaren and Victoria Bayliss (both of whom are qualified Zumba instructors themselves), Sue organised an afternoon at the Wheatpieces Community Centre, packed full of Zumba moves. Members of the community were invited to try out various styles of Zumba which is a type of Latin-inspired dance and fitness exercise. Even children were well catered for with their own 'Zumb-a-tomic' class designed for young Zumba fans. A great time was had by everyone who took part, and £334 was raised. The event was sponsored by Wheatpieces Community Centre who provided the hall free.

13th/14th next year. What started as a small, one-off local event is now the biggest and most popular event of its kind in Europe. And next year it promises to be extra special. The festival will feature a large, noisy and colourful re-enactment of the battle, with around 2,000 re-enactors. Some participants will be travelling from all over Europe to take part as knights, archers, men at arms, gunners and other colourful and authentic fighters. They will live in medievalstyle camps which will be open to visitors. Also planned are a huge market, with craftsmen and women creating many of the items used by the reenactors. More modern stalls will cater for 21st century tastes, and there will be minstrels, jesters and dancers add to the entertainment. Entry to the festival will be free, with a small charge for car parking.

A photograph of Tewkesbury’s High Street and Spring Gardens taken in 1928 (above left) has led to things taking off. The picture was loaned to us by local garage owner Ian Boskett as an item for publication on old Tewkesbury. Thinking it would be a good idea to try and recreate a novel ‘now and then’ feature, we asked helicopter pilot, correspondent and business proprietor Anthony Stockman if he thought a modern viewpoint could be taken.
The Changing Scene: Spring Gardens and The High Street Without hesitation, Anthony said he could fix up a flight and took Ian’s son Jack along with him. Professional photographer Jack has supplied many stunning images for Tewkesbury Direct over the past
few years.The weather for the shoot held, and we think the results are spectacular - as can be seen above (top right). Compare the changes that have taken place in 84 years: Holy Trinity Church (X) seems largely unaltered, and there are several recognisable buildings in the High Street too. Jack managed to capture a whole series of aerial photographs of Tewkesbury, which we will be featuring in future issues. We are indebted to Anthony and Jack for their assistance, and to Ian Boskett for inspiring the feature.

It was painstakingly restored by Tewkesbury Borough Council to house the ‘Out of the Hat’ Heritage Centre. George Rowe, the artist and lithographer of Cheltenham, was also fascinated by the building and it is one of a series of pictures he painted of Tewkesbury. Born in 1796, he escaped, from the cholera in his native Exeter, to Cheltenham between 1832-1834. In 1852 he again escaped – this time from his business problems to the gold fields of Australia!

Even more businesses in Tewkesbury Borough are able to benefit from a popular grant scheme, thanks to a funding boost of £50,000. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Business Grant Scheme was launched earlier this year and since then over fifty small and medium-sized businesses have benefited from financial support. Now, thanks to the further £50,000 from the borough council, businesses can continue to apply for one of the three grants available. These are designed to supporting businesses that operate from home, encourage new business start-ups and to help existing businesses to develop and grow. Rachel Butler of The Happy Dog Training Co. based in Tewkesbury recently received a ‘helping existing businesses to develop and grow’ grant of £230 to help rebrand her business. Rachel said: “I applied to the council for a grant to fund branded uniforms for myself and my two helpers. Our grant helped to kit us out in a range of indoor and outdoor wear, all with our new logo and name.

More Staff Join Local Police Team It has been a busy few weeks for your local police as we have welcomed more new staff to the team, writes Sgt Matt Puttock of Tewkesbury Police. One of these was particularly significant, with amphetamine and cannabis seized with a street value in excess of £20,000. It’s really rewarding for us as a team when we are able to take these kinds of quantities out of circulation – we know you don’t want it blighting your neighbourhoods, and we are committed to doing more of this work in the coming months. This month we were also was privileged to be part of a number of Remembrance Day parades; Superintendent
Priddy laid a wreath in Winchcombe and Inspector Hughes in Tewkesbury. For me, as a new Sergeant in Tewkesbury, it was hugely touching to see the numbers that flocked to the town to stand in r e m e m brance and respect. I was awed by the scale of the parade and service here and it was honour to meet and talk with some of the service men and women in attendance. I stood with some of the families and we enjoyed a beautiful, crisp bright morning that seemed a fitting day to remember those that sacrificed so much. On a more practical note we are moving into the cold grip of winter – this has been evidenced here at the station by my team digging in the back of their lockers to retrieve our warmest coats that have sat undisturbed since the start of the year! It is also a time when we should think about checking that our cars are in tip-top shape; tyres are fully inflated and have good enough tread to disperse the inevitable standing water we see here so
much in Tewkesbury. Christmas will soon be upon us too, a time when we should be more aware of home security – even though you live in an area of relatively low crime, it is still worth considering whether Christmas presents on view might make a tempting target for passing burglar. PUTTING THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO IT! The annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival celebrates its thirtieth anniversary next year, and to mark the occasion the Christmas Lights ‘switch-on’ was given a light hearted medieval theme this year, writes Shelby Powell. There was toe tapping medieval style music supplied by local musicians from the Bubonic Windband and Quirks of Fate. Tewkesbury’s community choir, Heart & Soul, were invited to sing Christmas carols, and just for the occasion the director of the Medieval Festival company, Penny Tubbs, wrote two medieval style carols for them to try out. ‘Hark the Re-Enactor’ and ‘Muddy Evil Town of Tewkesbury’ were sung to Hark the Herald Angel and O Little Town of Bethlehem tunes respectively. The Heart & Soul Community Choir started in 2003 as four harmony singing workshops for the over 50’s. The group enjoyed themselves so much that they asked to continue as a choir. Heart & Soul now numbers around seventy highly enthusiastic and dedicated members, who perform regularly at local events. The choir welcomes singers of all ages and backgrounds regardless of their musical experience. The only requisite is an open heart and a desire to sing. The emphasis is on the sheer joy and diversity of singing, rather than following any particular musical style.

Festive fever will be alive and kicking at wreathmaking workshops in Tewkesbury this month. Tewkesbury’s Heritage Centre Out of the Hat will host the creative workshops on Saturday, 1st December from 2pm to 4pm and Wednesday, 5th December from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Using a wide range of natural and festive materials, participants will learn new skills while creating their very own Christmas wreath – perfect for a gift or hanging on the front door. The workshops, which are being organised by Tewkesbury Borough Council, will be led by professional florist Jo Hiorns from Simply Flowers in Tewkesbury. The cost of each session is £25 per person, which includes all materials and refreshments. Crashmore Lane, which runs from the A46 roundabout at Teddington Hands to Overbury, will be closed for approximately three weeks during December. Work is scheduled to start on the reconstruction of a bridge parapet, over Carrant Brook, on Monday 3rd December. The parapet was demolished by a lorry earlier this year. Building work should be finished by December 21st, but could last longer depending upon weather conditions. The area is liable to flooding after heavy rain. An alternative route will be through Beckford and Conderton, or via the A46 and B4079 at Aston Cross.

A TRIO OF VILLAGES One of the great attractions of Bredon Hill is the charming variety of villages which surround it. Many walkers merely pass through these on their way to higher routes, so this month’s ramble (ideal for winter) gives an opportunity to visit three quite different places, each with a unique character. Starting from the war memorial in the centre of Kemerton village, walk down the lane towards church and at the crossroads, turn left. You will pass some farm buildings, and at the end of the tarmac road take the path through the trees. At the bottom of the slope, turn left just before the stream and go through a five bar gate
into a field (1). The ground can be quite boggy here. Follow the path right across the field to a farm gate, go through and take the same line to cross a footbridge in the next field. (2). Keep ahead and go over a stile, then yet another plank bridge and two more stiles to reach the lower grounds of Overbury Estate (3).

Chilled out in Overbury Overbury Court is visible away to your left. Go diagonally across the field towards the agricultural buildings in the Estate Yard. Go through a kissing gate and follow the yellow way markers, passing some garages and up a slope past a wood store (see photo above). At the end of the fence, turn left (4) up a track, passing some barns on the left, and into Overbury village. On meeting the road (5) turn left, and walk past the Church and a high stone wall. Cross to the right hand side of the road as you walk out of the village, and look for a metal gate on your right (6). Go through the gate and follow the arrows
across the field to another small gate. Pass through it and walk ahead, keeping the hedge to your right. (Temporary fences and gates are sometimes added into this field). Eventually you will meet a lane coming up from Kemerton (7). Walk straight ahead down a lane, passing a farm on your right. At the next junction keep straight ahead into Baylis Road, and look for a path in front of you, leading between some houses into a field (8). The path bears right, then left, to skirt the right hand side of the field. Keep on this path, go through a gap in a hedge and keep the same line, eventually
emerging on to the road in Westmancote (9). Turn left and walk down through the village, until you reach a three way junction. Bear right along the road towards Bredon for a short distance, then cross opposite the bus shelter (10) and take a narrow path into some trees at the side of a bungalow. Keep following this path until you emerge through a small gate, cross a small plantation and meet a broader track (11). Turn right along this track, then left along another wide path with hedges either side. (12). When you reach the road (13) turn right, then take the next road on the left back into
Kemerton village (14). This is Back Lane, which wends its way gently upwards, with some fine old buildings along the way. After passing the black and white Old Manor, and then Kemerton Court, look for a small green with an attractive Georgian House set back to the right. (15). Take the footpath which passes between a cottage and Upper Court’s gardens (to the left), down to a small lake. The remains of an old cider mill can be seen here too. Keep the lake to your right, and at the end of the bank go along the path into the trees, then over a footbridge to return to point (1).

GOLFERS HAVE SCRAMBLING TO A TEE The members of Sherdons Golf Club, Tredington, went out Scrambling for Charity on their Annual Three Captain’s Charity Day. This year’s format was a Texas Scramble with teams of four players per

team and for some teams it was indeed a bit of a scramble! To add to the coffers, fines were imposed for every shot that landed in a bunker, in the water or went out of bounds. Total fines came to £141 and they were only as low as that because the Captains imposed a maximum charge per team! 72 players in 18 teams took part on a day when the weather held good throughout. The game was followed by a Raffle, Putting Competition and Guess the Number of Tees. The Nearest The Pin Blindfolded competition was held over to another day as no could see the pin! Over £600 was raised for the Club Charity which for this year will benefit Linc. The Winners were: Seniors Vice Captain Nigel Day, Malcolm Ash, Rob Holtham and Graham Smith who came in with a net 50 of 3/16th handicap.
