Capability Brown’s famous landscape park at Croome will be turned into a Winter Wonderland for all the family this month. The National Trust, which manages the estate near Defford, has organised markets, story telling, crafts, a Carol Concert in the church and even visits from Father Christmas himself! From Thursday 1st to Monday 19th December, visitors can see how the Trust get Croome ready for Christmas. The former RAF buildings will be dressed in 1940s decorations, while the house transforms into a Georgian inspired Christmas with trees in the largest rooms. And of course Father Christmas will be in his grotto to bring a smile to everyone's face! Christmas Markets will be held on 5th and 6th December, and a Seasonal Trail around the park will be available until 3rd January -

INSPIRATIONAL VOLUNTEER’S 40 YEAR GUIDING SERVICE IS RECOGNISED Sue Haines, a Tewkesbury Girlguiding volunteer has been honoured for her work supporting girls and young women over the last 40 years, with a prestigious long service award.
She was presented with a specially-designed brooch in honour of her inspirational efforts by County Commissioners Helen Welsh and Carole Pennington and Tewkesbury District President Margaret Dale. Taking on many roles in Girlguiding, Sue has been a local Guider, District Commissioner & County Outdoor Activities Advisor, where she encouraged and supported leaders to develop new skills.
Sue is the also Chair of Friends of Deer Park, G l o u c e s t e r s h i r e ’s Girlguiding activity centre in the village of Cowley. Her experience in Guiding made her a natural choice to lead our Friends, who raise funds for its continuing development. With a big project to refurbish our toilet and shower block next year, this group’s support is more important than ever. Carol Pennington
said, “We value all our leaders in Gloucestershire, but it is very special when we can celebrate one person making a 40 year commitment to Guiding. “Sue has been a wonderful member of the County and locally here, we hope she can continue to enjoy all she does with girls and leaders for many more years ahead”. By giving just one or two hours a week, volunteers can help local girls and young women enjoy a wide range of exciting activities, as well as acquire new skills and experiences – and have fun at the same time. The volunteers who organise Tewkesbury's Poppy Appeal have issued awards to individuals in our community as well as local organisations who go that extra mile to help the charity, writes Shelby Powell. Peter Godwin from Tewkesbury British Legion Cub said: “We decided to select five people or organisations to make awards to this year. Going forward we will be holding a thank you party every year and making future awards.” The outstanding individual this year is undoubtedly Robert (Bob) Davis who gave up an enormous amount of time manning tables in Tewkesbury supermarkets. He raised a fantastic £2,293.08. “Of the businesses in the town, the Britannia Inn has been a long standing supporter of the Poppy Appeal and really deserved recognition, said Peter. “As for organisations, Marina Court has consistently raised money for the Poppy Appeal, organising raffles and auctions. “The staff and residents recognise that we collect throughout the year, and not just the two weeks leading up to

by Marilynne Robinson, PB £8.99 This is the final part of Marilynne Robinson's 'Gilead' trilogy. The first volume, 'Gilead' recounted the story of Rev. John Ames, while in 'Home', the second, the storyline moves across town to Rev. Broughton, Ames' lifetime friend and colleague, and focusses on Broughton's prodigal son, Jack. In 'Lila' we are provided with an overview of the background to the earlier books. We learn how Lila arrives in Iowa and settles in the town of Gilead to eventually marry widowed John Ames and to bear him a son. Each book is a story in its own right and can stand alone, so if you choose to read 'Lila' first, I doubt it will spoil the pleasure of reading the full trilogy. However I can recommend spoiling oneself, indulge, and over Christmas reading all three! Lila, an orphan, abducted from a home by strangely named, Doll, has lived a rough life, experiencing the depression, before she has even ventured as far as remote Gilead to end up squatting in a derelict house away from town.
Lila's life is the focus, but we also enhance our knowledge of their marriage as seen in 'Gilead' and her life with John Adams, their meeting and while it might be the wrong word, their courtship. Their marriage produces a son to whom, in 'Gilead', Ames is writing a letter for his offspring to read when he is grown up. Yet this book with religious connotations and quotations as the friendship of two Reverends might well partake in, provides a particular view into American mid-west rural life. Marilynne Robinson is a polished writer much applauded with prizes and nominations. Reading this book you can see why. It is an unusual story of love and companionship. Selected by: Ian B. DEER ON THE DOORSTEP At this time of year the majority of the calls we get concern hedgehogs, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. With the onset of the colder weather, late-litter juveniles are admitted because they are too small to survive the winter and several species of internal parasite also cause many problems for the youngsters in the autumn months. At the time of writing we have 160 of the prickly creatures in our care! As a result, we are using over 1,000 tins of pet food every week and donations of food are urgently needed. Each hedgehog costs around £5 per week to feed so you can see why the winter months are very expensive for us at Vale. Apart from hedgehogs, this time of year also brings an increase in calls about deer and we seem to have had a particularly high number in recent weeks:

Firstly there was a call to one almost on our doorstep, in the road just outside our driveway. He had been hit by a car and, following x-rays he was found to have a broken back and we had no choice but to put him to sleep. Another Beckford call was to a young fallow deer with a hind leg caught in a fence. The call came from a lady driving to work who had seen the youngster with his mum walking down the road but when the car approached they jumped the fence to get away from the road. As he jumped, the fawn got his leg caught in the fence and was left hanging helplessly. We were able to free him within minutes and so his injuries were limited to a small wound that needed suturing and we were able to release him back onto Bredon Hill a few days later. Yet another fallow was found collapsed in a field near Elmley Castle. Weighing 50kgs he was a large but juvenile stag with what turned out to be brain damage due to head injuries, although we don’t know how they were sustained. Despite initial treatment, he died a couple of days later. A fully grown fallow stag, complete with a

By the time we arrived at the scene, members of the public had pulled him out of the water and he was wrapped in a blanket on the bank. This time of year is the rutting season for deer which is the reason there is much more movement and therefore more accidents and incidents involving them at the moment.

massive set of antlers, fell into an open septic tank in the Forest of Dean. We called on Scott Passmore, a wildlife rehabilitator from the area, to assess the situation. The fire brigade were called in and eventually managed to pull the stag out of the tank. He ran off into the woods, the only injuries being to his pride.

Cat of the Month Meet Mitten! Mitten is a 14 year old tortoiseshell cat. She has come to us as her owners were moving to a new home. Mitten is a very young looking girl, still playful and loving but mostly she likes to cosy up in her bed, although chasing torch patterns around the floor is one of her favourite things to do. She would be a lovely companion for an elderly person. When Mitten has had enough of your fuss she will simply tap you with her paw to say 'enough now'. It's all on her terms after all! She also loves being brushed and will sit for quite a while, while you brush her. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Before the War Memorial was erected in 1922, the Cross was always the centre of the Town, writes John Dixon. It is believed in the Middle Ages a Tolsey Hall, similar to that in Ledbury, was erected in the area in order to exact tolls from traders coming into the town. By 1789 the Corporation wished to pull it down and erect a new market hall on cleared land in Church Street. The Council could not afford the cost and so entered into a sort of PFI (Private Funding Initiative) and sold the lease to business men. By 1838 the value of the tolls had declined and the hall was sold off again - but the decline continued until it was sold to the builder Thomas Collins. It was believed that his plan was to erect a new Wesleyan Methodist Church there to replace the overcrowded Chapel in Tolsey Lane (now the Antiques Showroom). This was achieved in 1878 and the Then became the Now. Were the old columns used as today’s gate supports? This article is written in Memory of the late David Willavoys, who discovered the grainy photograph during research at The County Archives.

The Brownies come up with ideas and designs, which was then put together to create a plaque for Victoria Gardens. Over 20 designs were entered for the competition and the girls were awarded an impressive third place. Councillor John Badham, Tewkesbury Town Mayor presented the unit with their certificate, saying that he was very impressed with the design and all the hard work that they have done for the Victoria Gardens. Dawn Hunt, Chairperson for Victoria Pleasure Gardens was also present and she said, “Your design was so good, we are hoping to use it in a future project. Well Done girls”. Tewkesbury 3rd Brownies have been helping out at the Victoria Gardens, with gardening and growing sunflowers, which were planted later in the summer. If you would like to volunteer and join in

NASCAR JUNIOR JAMES GETS A FIRST With the Junior Nascar season nearing its end, young, local driver James Wallis raced at Buxton raceway on 24/25th October. Weather conditions on day 1 were very wet, but despite this, James took his first win of the series and set the best lap times of the day. He went onto also win the grand final of the day, with some impressive driving. Day 2 was drier and James was placed in all races, including a very respectable 3rd in the British Championship race, from 3rd place on the grid. Overall it has been a very good rookie season for James, who now stands 4th in the cham-
pionship points, despite having only driven at a limited number of races. He is now looking forward to the 2016 sea-

Firstly all at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue would like to wish you and your family a very happy and safe Christmas! To help with that, here are some top tips from your local firefighters. Always make sure your smoke alarm is working. Make sure your Christmas lights conform to the British standard. Ensure you switch off your fairy lights and unplug them if you leave the house or got to bed. Don’t overload sockets. Don’t have the bulbs from the lights touching paper decorations. Always use an RCD (residual current device) on outdoor lights & equipment. This is a safety device which can instantly switch off the power if there is a fault. Decorations made of paper burn easily, don’t
attach them to heaters or lights (which can get hot). Don’t put paper or cards near naked flames or open fires. Always put candles on a heat resistant surface and in proper holders. Position candles away from curtains and other fabrics. Don’t put candles underneath shelves. Keep a gap (approx. 4 inches/100mm) between candles. Don’t move candles while they are still burning. Extinguish candles properly before going out or to bed. Never leave cooking unattended & don’t cook while drunk. Keep naked flames

Costs of maintaining hardware for longer than 4 years begin to outweigh benefits of not replacing the hardware. Things over 5 years old begin to become active problems for doing business. For individual users, the question becomes somewhat more difficult to answer as this is based on your needs. In general, it is given that a system will continue to fulfil it's intended purpose for a period of 3-5 years. If your case is exceptionally intensive, replacing at the 3 year point is a good plan. When buying a computer be this a laptop, desktop or tablet etc, do not go for price alone as the saying is true you do get what you pay for. Secondly go for a reputable manufacturer who is a MNC or other-
wise known as a multinational such as Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Lenovo etc. etc and purchase from a well respected local source or from one of the many online etailers. Once you have figured out your price point, specification and manufacturer do not leave this present in the box until Christmas day as lengthy setup times could tarnish the surprise also check that you have good antivirus cover in place and that your computer is setup with your broadband provider. Probably dating from the late 18th century, the walls are constructed from oolitic limestone with basal blocks of copper slag, perhaps imported from the Bristol area via the River Avon to Bredon. The walls show later modifications using local bricks and capping stones.

Local legends from the 1960s are set to get the joint jumping in Ripple on New Year’s Eve. The Ramrods are a five piece band originally formed in Cheltenham who, in their heyday, supported the likes of The Animals, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates and Gerry and The Pacemakers. They are also the group who gave Brian Jones his first break, before he went on to found the Rolling Stones. Although they split in 1967, the band reformed and have now marked over 50 years on the circuit. Exciting Times at Folly Gardens Conderton Orchard in the snow As the lane bears to the right, go straight ahead, passing some stone cottages on your left and through a five bar gate into an orchard (2). This was re-established a few years ago as a community pear and apple orchard, and is maintained by parishoners of the neighbouring villages of Overbury and Conderton. Bear straight up the slope ahead of you, and go through a gate into a field (3), keeping a drystone wall on your right. At the end of the field, go through the gate and turn left on to a tarmac lane. After a short distance, take the track up the hill to your right (4). This is a permissive path known as Rich Hill
Cotswold scarp is to the east, with the Forest of Dean and Malvern Hills on the western horizon. On a good day Sugar Loaf and the Brecon Beacons can also be seen. Take the next track to the right (5) and note the ruined buildings of Shalden Farm as you go through a gate. Turn right opposite the buildings (6), and follow the path down into a gully, and keep descending with the field wall on your right. Above you on your left are the ramparts of Conderton fort, one of the principal Iron Age forts in the region. Please keep dogs on a lead here as there are often sheep grazing in

FESTIVE TUDOR BIRDS OF PREY DAY Tewkesbury’s popular John Moore Museum starts its 2016 programme with a live animal event on Saturday 2nd January. Falconry was an incredibly popular sport in Tudor times. Henry VIII was an avid falconer and Anne Boleyn chose the falcon as her symbol. During the festive period you can learn how important birds of prey were to the Tudors, as a costumed falconer (from Midlands based J.R.C.S Falconry) will be at the museum to tell visitors all about these
amazing creatures and answer questions. They will be bringing along a kestrel, a buzzard, a Peregrine falcon, a barn owl and an eagle owl - and there will be a chance to meet these feathered friends. There will be two sessions, from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Tickets cost £3.00, for adults, £2.50 for seniors and students and £2.00 for children. Family tick-

On Tuesday 10th November the Big Learner Relay stopped off at Tewkesbury Abbey. A convoy of driving instructors and learners from Worcester went to the Abbey to a warm reception of locals to swap the top box from the lead car to go on the next relay to Gloucester. The Abbey Vicar, the Rev Paul Williams, The Town Mayor John Badham and Town Crier
Mike Keen Price were there to see the team on their way. The convoy is travelling 2,800 miles throughout the UK as a convoy of learners and instructors doing their lessons between handovers. Last year the convoy raised over £85,000 but
did not pass through Gloucestershire. The route started in Lisburn, Northern Ireland and ended at Swindon magic roundabouts, a sure favourite for learners, if you have ever had the pleasure of driving round them.

THE SECRETS OF KENJUTSU REVEALED John Foster of Triumph Martial Arts tells us in his own words, about the Arts and the training that takes place regularly at Apperley village Hall. Firstly, Kenjutsu is traditionally more secretive than other sword arts such as Kendo and Iaido. It differs from these as it teaches battlefield techniques designed to kill, rather than engaging in a full sword fight. The grading consists mainly of "kata", which is Japanese for patterns. These are sequences of movements involving various cuts to an imaginary opponent that the practitioner must learn as their training progresses. The higher the grade, the more intricate and complex the pattern. As students get through higher grades, they are also expected to become more proficient at their earlier patterns, making
them more free-flowing and natural. At black belt level, the grading student must perform all 8 patterns that they have learnt so far and perform them to the highest standard. There are also set standards of dojo etiquette when approaching the floor, drawing the sword from its sheath, putting the sword away, addressing and responding to the instructor/examiner and leaving the floor. Strict silence must also be maintained and students stood to attention when they are not being examined. The grading also consisted of one-on-one attack and defence rou-

tines, where students are tested on their ability to defend against different types of cuts attempted by the attacker. Throughout the grading, the higher grades use blunt practice swords, whereas lower grades use wooden "bokkens", and foam swords are used for the attack and defence practice. SOUNDS OF THE SEA IN TEWKESBURY ABBEY Tewkesbury is a long way from the coast, but next spring its great Abbey will echo to the sound of music related to the sea. Tewkesbury Choral Society is a flourishing choir, which has been performing for Tewkesbury and District since 1844. On 14th May 2016, accompanied by a large professional orchestra, they will be singing
works by English composers inspired by the sea. The main work will be one of the finest in the choral repertoire. A Sea Symphony was written by the Gloucestershire-born composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and is
an evocative setting of words by the American poet Walt Whitman. It is not religious in the usual sense but is profoundly spiritual in style, and has moved many who have listened to it. It begins with a fanfare, followed by the words:

COMMUNITY FUN Jane Griffiths is Tewkesbury’s Community Builder based at the Roses Theatre and funded by the Barnwood Trust.
Her role enables Jane to initiate a number of groups and activities to bring people together. Recently Jane organised a walking football session at Tewkesbury School Sports Centre which is open to all. Under the stewardship of Wijnand Wormhoudt (also know as Dutchy), the sessions are registered with Gloucestershire Football Association. The next session is on Sunday 6th December and then weekly on Sundays at 11.00am Jane has also been working with “Northway Strollers”, a gentle walking group who stroll through Northway on a Friday morning, following accessible routes. They meet at Brannigan Court at 10.00, stroll for 30-45 minutes, then finish with coffee and biscuits at Brannigan. This group include several people with some form of impairment, but they enjoy the company, fresh air and the opportunity to make friends along the way. 'Brannigan Wailers' (great name!) are a
recently formed fun singing group, who are very enthusiastic about their new hobby, (details on request - I need to check with the facilitator). A further group of residents in Northway have got together to brighten up the interior of the village hall with some colourful paint, and had a bunting-mak-
ing group to create some bright bunting to cheer up the previously bare space. Some of these groups have taken advantage of a Small Sparks grant from Barnwood Trust, up to £250 to enable a group of friends and neighbours to come together and share an interest or hobby.

October's camp was held in Tewkesbury Abbey, with thanks to permission being granted by Tewkesbury Abbey. The idea is to sleep under canvas or similar at least one night in each month of the year. To gain each part of the Award (Bronze, Silver or Gold) we have to camp one night each month and the challenge will be to find as many
different places to camp as possible. We have slept outside in January, when temperatures dropped below freezing, slept in a bunkhouse in the Staffordshire Moorlands, slept under tarps in Wales and camped in a scouts back garden to name a few. Next year we are planning several different venues.

Comments have been made, by a few passers by, about the size of the new Leisure centre that is under construction on the Gloucester Road, in as much that it doesn’t look that big. It is evident that their fears are unfounded after the doors were opened for a special day of guided tours for visitors to see the work to date. Staff from building contractors Willmot Dixon gave guided tours to over 100 members of the general public, and it is clear the development is massive. The facilities, based on two floors include the main 25 metre pool, a 20 metre learner pool, a 60 station gymnasium, a dance studio, a sauna, steam rooms a cafe and a shop, it will come with a free car park too. The new centre will be
run by the same friendly staff from Cascades under the administration of, Places for People, an organisation that runs
over a hundred leisure facilities around the country on behalf of local authorities.
It looks like we have a lot to look forward to when it all opens next year.

While gathering your shopping this year, take some time to consider those who may be looking to steal a better deal this Christmas, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. It's an unfortunate fact that for some Christmas provides a number of opportunities for criminals to benefit from the good will of others. I would like to offer a few tips to help you remain vigilant and reduce the chances of being affected by Christmas and New Year crime, whether on the High Street, on a night out or at home. Protect yourself: •Walk confidently and be aware of your surroundings •Avoid using personal music player or mobile phones •If carrying a bag, wear it with the flap facing you and with the strap over your arm and head •Never leave a club or pub alone and always let people know where you are. Make travel plans beforehand and try to arrange a lift from someone you know. •Have a taxi number on you and try to use pre-booked taxis rather than hailing one down. Always sit in the back, behind the driver. •On public transport, sit close to the driver or guard and also near to
CCTV. Avoid empty areas and if you feel unsafe contact a member of staff. •If you have no choice but to walk, never walk along dark shortcuts and always face oncoming traffic. Protect your car: •Park in a well-lit, busy area and ensure you close your car windows, lock the doors and use a steering lock. •Never leave valuables in your car. The glove compartment is likely to be the first place thieves will look. The cost of replacing a smashed window can often cost more than the valuables themselves. •Park somewhere that you will feel safe walking back to, remembering that it gets darker much earlier during winter months. •Keep purchases out of sight when in the car or at home - if they can be seen they can be stolen. •Leave your keys in a secure place. Keys can remain visible in a coat pocket or open bag are
easily snatched from them. Protect your home • E n s u r e doors and windows are locked at all times and remember to use your alarm if you have one. Keys, money and phones are a b u r g l a r ' s dream. Keep all such items well out of sight and reach of doors, windows and letterboxes. Intruders use rods to reach bags and keys and use them to enter your home with ease. In one third of burglaries, the thief didn't have to force entry into the home. •If you like to display your Christmas tree in your window remember to keep the presents away from prying eyes. Just like anyone else, thieves like to window shop before obtaining their goods. •Make your home look occupied by using timer switches on your lights and radios so people think you are in. If you don't have them, ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home and draw your
curtains if you are away. Dispose of packaging carefully. Empty boxes awaiting collection and bins full of packaging are a perfect advert for burglars. Be wary of anyone offering you high price goods at a cut down price. Your bargain could be someone else's Christmas present and handling stolen goods could carry a prison sentence. The next reminder is the danger of drinking and driving, the annual Christmas road safety campaign will be well under way by the time you read this article. Many of you will be out at parties over the Christmas and New Year period but can I warn you against the dangers of drinking and driving, I have often been asked the question how much can I drink and still be fit to drive ? There is only one safe limit and that is ZERO. Leave the car at home! I would like to finish by wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. FESTIVE RUGBY AT THE MOATS Tewkesbury RFC have two Gloucestershire Premier League home games at The Moats in Gander Lane this month. On Saturday 5th December they take on Forest of Dean side Berry Hill, while on Saturday 19th Cotswold rivals Cirencester are the visitors. Both games kick off at 2.30pm. The race began... Honestly, no-one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. You heard statements such as: "Oh, WAY too difficult!!" "They will NEVER make it to the top". "Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!" The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one... ... Except for those who in a fresh tempo were climbing higher and higher... The crowd continued to yell "It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!" More tiny frogs got
tired and gave up... ...But ONE continued higher and higher and higher... This one wouldn't give up! At the end, everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top! THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it? A contestant asked the tiny frog how the one who succeeded had found the strength to reach the goal? It turned out... That the winner was
deaf. If YOU have a goal or an ambition that you feel that you can realistically achieve then pay little if any attention to those who say that you can't or won't manage it. If you actually have belief in yourself you will be amazed at what you can actually achieve. As we near the end of the year give BELIEF a chance. 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large onion 1 chilli 1 garlic clove 1 courgette, sliced 1 fresh lime 1 red pepper 300g mushrooms 300g turkey 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 250g natural yoghurt A handful of fresh coriander, chopped 1-2 tsp garam masalla or curry powder Salt and pepper Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok, and add the chopped onion, chilli and garlic (chopped or crushed). Fry together until the onions go soft. For a milder curry deseed the chilli pepper
and discard the seeds. If you are also wondering who is going to finish off the sherry in the coming months, for an extra flourish add a dash to the pan and fry it off to remove all the alcohol. It works well! Add the chopped mushrooms, courgette and pepper - plus salt and pepper to taste. Fry together for a further 23 minutes, and turn the heat down. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, yoghurt and add the juice of the lime. Add the garam masalla, or curry powder. Cook vigorously for five minutes, stirring gently. Reduce the heat and simmer for ten minutes, stirring occasionally. As with any dish using pre-cooked meat, it is essential to ensure
©Dreamstime that the turkey is cooked thoroughly and is piping hot when served. So, dice the turkey, increase the heat of the pan and mix it into the curry. Keep stirring everything thoroughly to make sure the meat is cooked through. Reduce the heat and simmer for
a further five minutes, stirring occasionally. Roughly chop a handful of fresh coriander and sprinkle over the dish before serving. Turkey curry goes very well with pilau rice and naan bread - for additional zing serve with lime pickle, mango chutney and raita. TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 59
