A novel set in Vienna in 1937-38 and detailing the experiences of teenage Franz Huchel when he moves to the city from his childhood lakeside village after his widowed mother finds him a job as an apprentice at a newsagents and tobacco shop. Thereafter they communicate solely by postcards, these texts sprinkling the pages. His departure from his idyllic birthplace is sudden and Franz finds himself in an urban setting learning his trade, and as instructed, reading the papers and keeping up to date with current events, which become more repressive as the Nazi influence increases within Austria. His Jewish employer, Otto Trsnyek, disabled from the WW1, seems to spend his days keeping the books, but as external events within the city worsen he is threatened by a neighbouring shop keeper. One of the shop's customers is Sigmund Freud who Franz befriends and they meet from time to time for walks, Franz taking along a cigar for the Professor to enjoy. Freud provides advice to the young man. We also see inside the Freud household, his relationship with his daughter, and how the Nazi pressures eventually lead them to obtain official authorisation to travel to England. The other character is Franz's Bohemian girl-
friend, Anezka, though this description of their relationship makes it sound more concrete than it is. However Franz is smitten after their first meeting at the ferris wheel in the city's park. Their relationship is not straight forward, with Freud's input Franz pursues her, naively believing there is a future, only eventually uncovering the reality. The events move forward to May 1938 when the Freud family depart, by this time the arrival of the SS, and the Nazi influence within the city has changed all their lives. This is not a long book but within it's 234 pages we have a visual insight into life in Vienna before the war. The time period setting is well described and the reader walks the streets with Franz. Planters return thanks to local support Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers feared that the self watering railing planters located along the riverside walk at Back of Avon would have to be taken down after a spate of vandalism this summer resulted in every display being damaged over a period of under two months. Despite using the manufacturer’s recommended fixings and tightening the railings to reduce play, the volunteers were unable to prevent the planters from being a target for the vandals. Sponsorship secretary Shelby Powell commented: “Some members of the committee thought we might have to remove the planters, but a number of people commented that if we could add additional brackets to the bottom of each one, this could prevent them from being moved.” The vast majority of the project is funded by individuals and local businesses through sponsorship monies, and volunteers faced the difficulty of raising enough to pay for replacement parts damaged as well as additional funding for the design and installation of additional brackets. Two town centre businesses came forward and donated £150
Nick Lyons fitting the new brackets towards replacement parts. Donations came from Nickie Philipson-Stow of the Orange Pig and Jackie Dean of Bluebell Wood florist shop. Local precision sheet metal fabricators, Precision Engineering Pieces, based at Ashchurch Business Centre came forward to design, manufacture and fit the additional brackets - at no cost to the volunteers. Senior programmer Nick Lyons, who has worked for the company for over thirty years, has been responsible for fitting the prototype brackets.
Volunteers at Tewkesbury in Bloom have been impressed by the design and finish and have asked Nick to produce enough brackets for all eight planters. Chris Grant general manager at PEP comments “Precision Engineering Pieces are only too happy to help the community and assist in deterring vandalism in our local beauty spot”. The winter plants are currently being grown at Cornerways Ways nursery at Twyning, and will be installed inside the planters as soon as the work has been completed by the team at PEP.

NEW HOME FOR AGP AUTOSERVICE After four years providing a successful mobile vehicle servicing and maintenance business throughout the Three Counties, Ali Phillips has established a new home for AGP Autoservice at Bredon’s Hardwick. Ali, who grew up in Bredon and has lived in the Tewkesbury area all his life, is an experienced mechanic who has seen demand for his business, AGP Autoservice, increase over the past year. “I decided that having my own workshop would enable me to offer customers a wider range of services,” said Ali. “Those who appreciate the flexibility of mobile servicing will still be catered for, and I now offer a free collection and delivery service
within a ten mile radius of Tewkesbury. This can be either from a customer’s home or place of work,” Ali added. From a well equipped workshop at Unit 2, Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, Ali offers full vehicle servicing, tyres, brakes, batteries, clutches, exhausts, vehicle tracking - and MOTs can be arranged too. He also operates a breakdown recovery service - all at highly competitive prices. Access to the unit at Croft Farm is easy -

£750,000 investment at marina has been completed Tewkesbury Marina has announced that its £750,000 investment in the revitalisation of Basin 2 on the Avon Level - including new pontoons and facilities to an international 21st Century Standard - has been completed on schedule and to plan. Basin 2 was identified by the Marina management as being in need of refurbishment. The 30-40 year old pontoons were beginning to show their age, and a number of berths lacked electricity and water supplies.
Mark Cottrell, Chairman explains: “This £750,000 project has upgraded the facilities, with our clients benefitting from new stable pontoons and flood protected moorings along with water and electricity supply to all berths. “Dredging has also been carried out to ensure the safe passage of all vessels in the basin.” Berth holders at Marina Tewkesbury enjoy easy access to the beautiful cruising grounds of the River
Artists’ impression of the new homes that will soon enhance the marina Avon, the River Severn and access to the tidal estuary. The newly refurbished basin will soon be overlooked by a development of eight high quality new houses.

The Sabrina - Part I The original Georgian building of Hereford House and the 1990s design of the Library seem to sit relatively harmoniously with each other, writes John Dixon. Hereford House was perhaps of such imposing architectural quality that it did not fall prey to the developers. It was the home of some of the town’s prominent doctors - more recently the Drs. Shephard lived and worked there. If in 1970 Hereford House looks forbidding, its doomed neighbour, at No. 80, looks positively forlorn. The Crisp family bought it in 1908, when its ground floor was already a shop with a cellar. In its last years, Jean McNiven remembers it was occupied by artist Gerald O'Sullivan and, after that, Alf Collins sold dog meat there. What is remarkable is that this shop survived and constricted - still somewhat mysteriously - the important development of the Sabrina Cinema in 1933-4. A 700-seater cinema, with restaurant and car park, the Sabrina possessed, according to Linnell, a “facade of plate glass and dazzling white concrete". It was built by Collins & Godfrey for £10,000. However popular it was before TV arrived, the Sabrina’s life was short and it only occupied the site from 1934 to 1963. Had 1963 been in the age of strict planning rules, one wonders if its art-deco frontage would have been subject to a preservation order. (Part II will follow in January, and an extended version of this article appears in Then and Now Vol. V).

THE WELSH CORGI The word Corgi comes from Welsh meaning dwarf dog. The breed originated in Wales as a herding dog. There is a folk legend that says Corgis were a gift from woodland fairies and the breed’s markings were left on its coat by fairy harnesses and saddles, writes Nigel Sligh.

Welsh Corgis had a common ancestor, before the breed split into two. Around the 10th century this dog was bred with dogs from the Flemish weavers, and they were known as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, whilst the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed, was influenced from dogs from Nordic settlers. The Pembroke is the more popular of the two, and the Cardigan larger in weight and height. Welsh Corgis have historically been used as
herding dogs, specifically for cattle. Their herding technique has being referred to as ‘heelers’. They would nip the heels of larger animals to keep them on the move. Their low height and agility would allow them to avoid the kicking hooves of cattle. In the late 19th century Welsh farmers switched from cattle to sheep production, and the breed became unsuited to herding sheep flocks. The farmers then
cross bred the Corgi to the Welsh Sheepdog and the original Welsh Corgi was then only bred as a companion dog. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were first introduced to Corgis in 1933, by Thomas Thynne, the 5th Marquess of Bath. In 1944, for her 18th birthday, Princess
Elizabeth was given her first Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Susan, from which she has bred 10 generations of dogs. Susan became the progenitor of all the Corgis owned by the Royal Household. The crossbreed Corgi/ Dachshund is called a Dorgi. However, this is not a recognised breed.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE CPRE AWARD TO THE STOKE ORCHARD AND TREDINGTON COMMUNITY The Communities of Tredington and Stoke Orchard certainly had something to celebrate recently when they received a Community Award presented by the Gloucestershire Branch of the C.P.R.E. (Campaign to Protect Rural England). Viscount Bledisloe presented the award to Parish Council Chairman, Richard Chatham and Councillors Andrew Troughton, Steve Watts and Centre Manager Helen MacDonald received citations for their special inputs. Speaking at a Celebration of the Award in the Parish Community Centre, Richard said that he had received the Award for whole Community in recognition of all their efforts. He then thanked Sue Fereday and her Community Centre Committee for their massive input over the past three years since Bloor Homes, the developers, had handed over the keys to the new Community Centre, Shop and the Bus. He went on to thank Cathy Reid, Clerk to the Parish Council, for her support and commitment and presented her with a gift to mark her retirement after 12 years. Richard said that the Council and the Clerk had received enormous support from the GRCC, GAPTC and Tewkesbury Borough Planning Officers over the complex negotiations. In 1943 two Gloster aircraft factories were sited in Stoke Orchard to build Hurricanes and Typhoons for the war
effort. After the war the National Coal Board took over one building and until 1990’s it was the Coal Research Centre. When it closed the massive Gassification towers, furnace pipes, testing rigs and buildings sadly became a rusting rotting hulk. In 1992 in their Village Appraisal, the residents of Tredington and Stoke Orchard laid out their plan and Vision for the redevelopment of the site in their Village Appraisal. It is exciting to think that the ethos of ground breaking research which was the heart of the site from 1943 to 1994 is now reflected in the new Passivhaus design of the Centre building with today’s digital and solar powered technology. However, a building is empty without people and it had been the whole Community working together that has put the real heart and soul into the building, to complete a vision founded 25 years earlier.

BLOW AWAY THE COBWEBS Too much of a good thing after Christmas? Well, there’s no better way to clear your head than to head for the hills for a brisk walk, writes Jack B. Walker. Make sure you wrap up warm for this walk though - for it takes us to some of the more exposed upper slopes of Bredon Hill. Local legend has it that if you head due east from here, there is no higher point until you reach the Ural Mountains which divide European and Asian Russia. So expect some chilly winds! Starting from the Yew Tree pub at Conderton, walk up the street at the side of the pub and take the first left turn (1) into a lane with a stream on the right hand side, and a thatched cottage to the left. This attractive little street is known as Watergrip Lane. As the lane bears to the right, go straight ahead, passing some stone cottages on your left and through a five bar gate into an orchard (2). This was re-established a few years ago as a community pear and apple orchard, and is maintained by parishoners of the neighbouring villages of Overbury and Conderton. Bear straight up the slope ahead of you, and go through a gate into a field (3), keeping a drystone wall on your right. At the end of the field, go through the gate and turn left on to a tarmac lane. After a short distance, take the track up
the hill to your right (4).

This is a permissive path known as Rich Hill Track. Walk up through the trees, and pass a barn on your left. Carry straight on along the track for three quarters of a mile, with the open fields to your left.

The views back down the Vale of Gloucester are far-reaching in clear weather. The line of the Cotswold scarp is to the east, with the Forest of Dean and Malvern Hills on the western horizon. On a good day Sugar Loaf and the Brecon Beacons can also be seen. Take the next track to the right (5) and note the ruined buildings of Shalden Farm as you go through a gate. Turn right opposite the buildings (6), and follow the path down into a gully, and keep descending with the field wall on your right.

We are at a pivotal point in the history of producing the necessary power to live our lives and fuel our industries. Whilst the discussion continues about the benefits of wind and solar farms to provide, good clean electricity, some forward thinking companies and individuals have taken the opportunity to reap the benefits into their own hands. Logistical Waste and Agricultural transport specialists, William Gilder Limited, operate from two large local sites at Toddington and Teddington Hands and at each site large solar panel installations have been fitted on to the roofs of the buildings. The Toddington Waste Recycling Centre has a 96 killowatt array and the Teddington Hands transport depot is
equipped with 140 killowatt system, both installed by local company MyPower of Toddington. The amount of electrical power collected by the solar array at Teddington, is substantial despite the panels haveing an East and West aspect, rather than the ideal situation of facing South. This indicates, as Solar panels become more efficient, it can raise new opportunities for properties that do not have a South facing roof. A spokesman for the company said that “The savings in electrical costs have been considerable, the solar panels can occasionally cover
all daytime usage in the Summer months for all our offices and workshops including contributing to the heavy 3 phase requirements. At weekends when there is just a skeleton staff on duty, the system exports into the National Grid.” Last month we featured PureDrive Energy, again a local firm, who have developed an industrial and residential storage system so that power used during the hours of sunshine can be used at night, when most of us get home. It may not be long before many more of us are becoming free of the grip of energy costs.

FANTASTIC RESULT FOR WATTSY’S CHARITY WALK Undeterred by the dark, cold early morning start and heavy rain, Lee Watts and his friend Paul Ross set out on their 32 mile charity walk from Worcester Warriors Sixways ground to Gloucester Rugby’s Kingsholm Stadium in aid of Cancer Research and in memory of Lee’s friend Joe Goodwin who sadly died from cancer last year.

The support along the way from members of the public really spurred the duo on, and they were very appreciative of the reception received in Tewkesbury Town Centre. They completed the walk in ten and a half hours and raised over £5,600 which was amazing as Lee’s initial target was £500, with £800 being collected in pots along the route! Lee said “I am very proud although it was a lot harder than I expected but at the same time very enjoyable.” Joe’s parents Graham and Louise met them at Tewkesbury and also at Gloucester to show their support and appreciation of their efforts. Lee and Paul would like to thank everyone who helped and supported them with this walk, especially Tewkesbury Rugby Club, Di Davies at Avonside Taxis, Gerry and Jane at The White Bear and Dave and Dave at the Britannia.

LOCAL PROBUS CLUB SKITTLES EVENING Many pubs are sadly closing, and others have converted their skittles alleys to eating areas. Therefore, to organise a club skittles evening, it can be a bit difficult to find a local venue that can provide both a decent alley and good food. This problem was recently resolved when Longdon & District Probus Club held their annual skittles evening at the Haw Bridge Inn, Tirley. It provided an opportunity for Club members, together with partners and friends, to enjoy a social game of skittles and a nice pub meal. The skittles match proper was held during the first half of the evening, followed by a welcome break for food. Following the break, the Club treasurer, Douglas Braund, presented a prize to Sally Singh (left Photo) for the top ladies’ score, and to Peter Guilding
for the top gentlemens’ score. The traditional ‘killer’ was then played and, after a close game, was won by Sally Singh. (Sally is obviously an accomplished skittles player). Longdon & District Probus Club meets on most Monday mornings at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury, together with occasional trips out and social events such as this one. LOCAL FUNDRAISERS Tewkesbury people love their Christmas lights, with many individuals sponsoring bulbs. Hairdressers, Emma and Jay Hasa of Ell Hair have turned their hand to organise, a Paint a Bauble competition, to raise funds for the Christmas lights. Emma told us that the sum total will be announced at 6.00pm on Saturday 16th December at Ell Hair Salon in Barton Street. The winner of the competition will be announced at the same time and they will receive a Smyths Toys £50 voucher. At the Prosecco and Afternoon Tea fund raiser held at Tilly’s Tea Room in November, £220 was raised for the Sue Ryder Hospice, Emma and Jay would like to thank everyone attended and special thanks to Jill for the amazing spread and Jackie from Bluebellwood for the lovely teacups and teapots.

In a World War – when the weather ends one battle, another breaks out! by John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society A century ago to this very day, the Battle of Passchendaele, part of the Third Battle of Ypres, finally ended when Canadian troops captured the village of infamous name, which commanded a strategic piece of higher ground. The battle had started on 31 July 1917 and was prolonged by fierce German resistance – and the unseasonably atrocious weather which dominated the autumn of that year. The mud of Passchendaele will never be forgotten. Tewkesbury lost 29 men during that autumn - coincidentally the same number as were lost on the Somme. In total, the Allies had lost slightly fewer - 450,000 – but more than the Germans at 260,000. Attacks
were usually more costly than defence – but the Germans found it difficult to replace troops,

The news from Palestine was better, as by Christmas, the defeat at Katia was avenged when Jerusalem was captured – but it was not easy Turkish counter attacked cost 18,000 lives including our own Pte. Arthur Joseph Sallis, whose body was not recovered until after the war. He was the second apprentice lost by butcher, Mr. Chatham. In chronicling each of Tewkesbury’s dead, there is only going to be a slackening of the pace over the winter – but 1918 will bring 53 more distressing centenaries of death before it was all

A ONE METRE HIGH PILE OF BRAND NEW BOOKS WON BY QUEEN MARGARET SCHOOL Queen Margaret Primary School were lucky enough to visit the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Year 4 went to see Shoo Rayner who talked about his recent book and showed us how to draw a dragon. The children were then able to have a go at drawing their own dragons with him. Year 3 went to see Jeremy Strong as he wrote Roman’s on the Rampage which linked to their theme. They thought he was very
funny and enjoyed hearing about how he writes his books. After visiting the Festival the teachers completed a feedback form, these were put into a draw and Queen Margaret Primary School won a metre high pile of books. The children were so excited by this as there are enough books to share through the whole school!

The weather was perfect with no rain or wind, the funfair was bigger than ever, the number of people attending exceeded all expectations and the firework display was spectacular. Club members are delighted that the event took place without major incident and the town, and Abbey, was lit up by some of the biggest fireworks ever seen in Tewkesbury. The display is organised each year by the Rotarians and it is free for everyone. The cost of putting it on, in excess of £3000, is covered by the bucket collection and the club is grateful for the generosity of all who were there. Sunday morning following the bonfire was spent by the club members cleaning the Vineyards of debris and
sparklers but it is a credit to both the funfair and public that the task did not take too long as the amount of litter was

AQUATHON FIRST November saw the first of Tewkesbury Triathlon Club’s extended Aquathlon series at Tewkesbury School. Due to popular demand the event has been extended from 4 events to 6 for the 2017/18 season. It still comprises a 400m swim followed by a 5k run.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION SHORTAGES A major drug manufacture has been recently ceased trading, which has caused some issues in the supply chain for certain medications in the UK, writes Peter Badham. I understand that some patients are finding it very difficult to obtain the following medication, in some parts of Gloucestershire: Warfarin tabs, Venlafaxine tabs, Aspirin tabs, Losartan Potassium tablets, Metformin tablets, Perindopril tabs, Simvastatin tabs and Tramadol. I can fully understand the stress this must cause patients, who are stabilised on their medication, and now are worried they may not be able to get replacement stocks. Why would you want to change for example your blood pressure treatment to something new that might or might not suit you as well? In addition why should your GP have to spend time on reviewing your medication to try and overcome these shortages? As a company we are very well placed, as we have our own warehouse
and internal supply system. We hold up to six months stocks of medication at any given time, to ensure we always can support our patients If you are finding it difficult to have your prescription dispensed for any of these items, please call into our branch at Priors Park. PUTTING CHRISTMAS INTO PERSPECTIVE Christmas is a time of giving and taking and far too much taking for granted, writes David Slater. The following story helps to put things into perspective somewhat! Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he got really furious with his little five-year-old daughter. He found out that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive shiny gold wrapping paper. It was no joke. Money was really tight in this little household. You can guess that he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the little girl had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox. After she had decorated it she put it under the Christmas tree. A shoe box is quite large and the father was truly more than worried as to where the little girl had got the money from to be able to put a present that needed a shoe
box to pack it in! Christmas morning came and the little girl, filled with excitement, went over to the tree, picked up the box and brought the glittering gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As he opened the box, the father still wondered whether he should punish her further for wasting money. When he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!" His face had gone as red as Santa's robe ! The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full. And then I gave it to you!" was The father
crushed. He fell immediately on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He so wanted her to forgive him for his unnecessary and very ferocious anger. The little girl was killed in an accident only a short time later. The father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the remaining years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold. Treasure it! David Slater

OLD POST OFFICE ALLEY In about 1870 the Post Office at 127 High Street closed and moved to Church Street. The alley alongside it became Old Post Office Alley. Confusingly, the lane alongside the Church Street premises is Post Office Lane. The Post Office itself has moved three times more since then. Writing in 1905, John Rogers said that in its heyday, maybe 60 years earlier, the alley was filled with stocking frames; machines for knitting stockings. There may have been up to a dozen cottages and Mr Key, a hosier, had a frame-shop at the Oldbury end of the alley. It had this in common with many alleys where people lived at barely subsistence levels in appalling squalor. The frame shop had gone by 1868, replaced by a ‘cap-
ital brick-built cottage’, rented to Caleb Malpas at £5 4s per annum. The demise of stocking knitting in the middle of the nineteenth century saw a mixed population in the alley. The standard of the cottages meant low rents and ‘less respectable’ tenants. For an alley with a maximum of eleven cottages the variety and frequency of magistrate’s court appearances is surprising. OUR ALLEYWAYS continued… hard labour for wife beating and attacking a constable with a chair leg. Sophia Hawker was jailed for three months for keeping a brothel, though the problem that brought her to court was that her staff were stealing from their clients’ wallets. In 1913, William Green, drover, was convicted of obstructing the highway with a herd of cows. The complainant was the Deputy Inspector-General of the Indian police, who claimed that he was held up for up to three minutes. He was fined half a crown, but the prosecuting solicitor must have had a great deal of sympathy because he very publicly paid the fine! William Green was no stranger to the court, though, and had probably contributed his own misfortune because of a quick temper. His wife was from the same mould and seems to have picked fights with half the other women in the alley. They were probably not good neighbours. The alley was notoriously insanitary. In 1879 there was only one convenience for the eleven houses there and in 1892 the Council were
concerned that Cholera might break out again, but did little about it beyond worrying. The house numbers decreased slowly as orders were obtained to have dangerous ones pulled down. In 1938, with council houses being built elsewhere, clearance orders were obtained for eight cottages as well as all the cottages in the adjacent Bleach Yard. The war delayed demolition, but not for long. In 1950, number 5, the last, was condemned despite Councillor Bannister describing it as “a palace compared with some places in Tewkesbury” and the last resident left
the alley. With no buildings left, Hayward’s took the opportunity to extend the yard behind their shop to give space for business expansion. A concrete block wall took the place of what were cottage fronts. In the 1990s, cottages reappeared; built on the site of the old Bleach Yard cottages, but opening on to Old Post Office Alley. Thus the old pattern of development was changed and the houses are not behind the front house. They are, though, an example of how alleys can have a new life with practical modern houses in keeping with their setting.

Jeanette Messenger has asked us to thank local businesses and the people of Tewkesbury for their support for her Adrenoleukodystrophy Charity. Jeanette has been helping with the Macmillan Coffee morning for around fifteen years, and for the last two years she has fundraised for Adrenoleukodystrophy alongside the event, which is held in the reception of Tewkesbury Hospital. Assisted by Jo Hunter and Teresa Howell, this year Jeanette raised over £445. Many Tewkesbury Shopkeepers donated items for here to sell, as well as members of the public. Adrenoleukodystrophy is a genetic disorder which destroys the protective sheath around the brain’s neurons.
