I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was glad that I was prompted/ reminded about it when it was long-listed for the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2023. Memphis as a city vibrates throughout this very readable novel, the cast of characters though small is helpfully listed with a family tree. This is useful as the story takes the reader back across the years, each chapter titled with a character's name and the year. The novel starts in 1995 when Miriam has left her husband and brought her two girls, Joan and Mya, back to the North family home in Memphis where her half-sister August still lives with her son, Derek, a problem boy. There is some bad family history between these parts of the family but that is something Miriam has to put aside as she fears for her life from her abusive Marine husband, Jaxson. Over the course of the book their family history and the good then bad times of Miriam and Jaxson's marriage are revealed. The main focus of the children is on Joan, the only one who recounts her own chapters. She is always drawing, art becoming ever more important in her life as Miriam's family settle into the North home; a house built by her father, Myron, for Hazel his wife which they saved up for. A very individualistic house with two wings and a bright yellow door, a feature; the two families living in their own halves but sharing kitchen facilities. Over the years, the novel spans through to 2003 by which time Joan is 18, and the family has evolved and grown up. Miriam has trained to become a nurse, while August, a hairdresser with a loyal clientele chain smokes her way through the book, when not singing; she has a memorable voice, little heard outside their four walls, a wasted talent, a single mother needing to be at home. The grandparents story of Hazel and Myron is fea-
tured back as far as 1937; it is a story of love at first sight, devotion to each other until Myron who survived WW2 is killed while on duty as Memphis's first black police detective. Hazel though is surrounded by memories in the house he built which has quaint artistic features in it; Joan's skill inherited from him. Outside the family there are a couple of important characters, in particular Miss Dawn, a neighbour who is always there and seemingly helps each generation with advice, encouragement even a bit of maybe witchcraft. Stanley Koplo runs the local shop just down their street. His store has North family history and experiences and he is a true friend to each of the generations. These the two featured neighbours in a locality where together they all look after their own community. This novel is the story of the North family women. Not only is their art and music integral to their history, so is quiltmaking, gardening and their other skills all of which enhance the storytelling. However over these years Memphis was suffering racial discrimination, gang warfare, poverty and so much more; the author manages to bring this all out in a frank readable way. This book is a good read providing an authentic look at AfricanAmerican life through the decades before the last century turned with the millennium.

WORK BEGINS ON OUTLET CENTRE Work has begun on the Cotswold Designer Outlet Centre at Ashchurch. With phase one set to open in Spring 2025, the centre will introduce fashion, lifestyle, homewares, sport, outdoors and F&B brands, in a beautifully designed setting that creates a premium guest experience for visitors. Black Belt Success For Students Eight students from the White Tiger Martial Arts Academy based at the Wheatpieces Community Centre in Tewkesbury have been promoted to Black Belt or higher Dan grades after a gruelling four hour National Ch’ang-Hon Taekwon-Do Association Black Belt grading on Saturday 23rd September 2023. Finlay Bourton (14) and Darcey Coleman (17) were promoted to BoDan’s (probationary Black Belts due to their age) and will have to show a further six months of continued dedication and commitment before being promoted to fully fledged 1st degree (1st dan) black belts. Andrew Coleman, Finlay Coleman, Kerry Whiting, Gary Whiting and Andrew Etherington were promoted to 2nd degree (2nd Dan) whilst Robert Clingan was promoted to 3rd degree (3rd Dan). They all had to perform various disciplines that included advanced leg and hand techniques, set sparring combinations, free sparring, realistic Self-Defence (including being seated and groundwork), patterns (attack and defence combinations in various directions), Knife Defences, breaking wooden boards and tiles plus a theory test to ensure a good knowledge of Taekwon-Do. Nihal Singh and Henry Mealing have also both been promoted from

Following significant civil engineering works, the river now flows freely beneath the high railway embankment. The recently completed works comprising two separate contracts to correct developing bank erosion and mitigate the risk of flooding, has been vindicated following October’s heavy rainfall with the River Isbourne running at an unusually high level. Ian Scholey, the GWSR’s Infrastructure Manager and a civil engineer by profession, explains: “This is an area with a history of flooding, which has caused erosion of the banks at the foot of the railway embankment and increased the risk of damaging the railway embankment itself. “In addition, deposits of gravel had formed an island on the upstream side of the bridge, interrupting the flow of water. “The work has taken some time to complete as it was interrupted by

both the need to carry out works elsewhere on the railway, as well as Covid and flooding in 2020, which emphasised the need for the river work to be completed as a matter of urgency. In recent storms the river was a metre and a half above its normal level, a flow which could
have caused extensive damage if the works had not been undertaken. The River Isbourne rises on the northern edge of Cleeve Hill and runs 14 miles (22km) to join the River Avon at Hampton in Evesham. Students plan Bristol to Cardiff charity run Three Tewkesbury-born students from the University of Bristol having taken up the challenge of running over the Severn Bridge to raise money for the Mind charity, and narcolepsy awareness. With three friends, they will set off on Saturday 2nd December, venturing over varied terrain from the rugged Bristol Downs, across the Severn into Wales, to finish at Cardiff Castle in the city centre. The challenging route is around 70km. Joe Hughes, from Tewkesbury, said: “Mental health conditions affect millions worldwide, yet the stigma surrounding them persists. “Our mission is to break the silence within our small group and to help promote being more open with the homies as well as important charities like Mind. “One of our group, Freddie Dowland, was diagnosed with nar-

STORM DEBI RESCUE MISSION FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS Just as Storm Debi (the 4th named storm of the season) hit Gloucestershire, Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service went to the aid of a 28ft cruiser which had sunk 5 miles up-river on the Avon. Head of Unit Nic Price said “With extremely high winds gusting over 30mph this proved to be a very difficult operation. We used our 26ft cruiser Minerva and also our Rigiflex dinghy and between the two boats and a crew of five were able to tow the stricken vessel back down to Tewkesbury Marina. The boat had been partly pumped out by the time we arrived with a bilge pump that had been jury-rigged to try and keep her afloat but she urgently needed to reach the safety of Tewkesbury Marina where the dock officers were awaiting her arrival to lift her straight out before she

TEWKESBURY & DISTRICT u3a OPEN MORNING Tewkesbury & District u3a held their annual Open/Membership Renewal Morning at the Baptist Church Hall on 13 November. This was an opportunity to inform people about our organisation, recruit more members and allow current members to renew their membership. The Morning was a great success with about 160 attending, including some 35 non-members with more than 20 deciding to join our u3a on the day. Most of our Groups had a stall, some with elaborate displays or videos of activities. Our u3a has about 550 members taking part in some 35 varied Group activities including languages (Spanish, Latin and several French Groups), making things (needlecraft and other crafts), games (bridge, scrabble and mahjong), learning and enhancing techniques (ancient history, discovering Britain, family history, computers, photography, and science & technology), some slightly more physical activities (strolls and walking, skittles, pétanque, table tennis, short mat bowls and kurling -not on ice), plus several art Groups, a Book Club, opera appreciation, guitar Group, discussions and solo groups, and a Garden Visits Group. Other Group ideas are welcome and some new ones were suggested on the day. Tewkesbury & District u3a is for people no longer in full time employment. We are
a members organisation where we all learn from each other about activities. We also have a monthly members meeting in the Baptist Church, with a speaker (this year’s topics have included Cotswold canals, antique furniture, Battle of Britain, 19th century stagecoaches,

SEVERN UNIT CALLED OUT ON TRAFALGAR DAY FLOOD RESCUE Just 12 hours after attending their Trafalgar Night Dinner in their best attire (as this is a very formal occasion) the Unit received a request for assistance from Nicola and Pete Lancaster who were marooned in their boat out on the flood hit moorings by Avon Lock. Donning their “all weather gear” Head of Unit Nic Price with Reach Master and MVS member Will Fish on the helm took their Rigiflex dinghy out and just managed to squeeze under King John’s Bridge to reach the lock. Head of Unit said “The flood water had come up very quickly overnight so Nicola and Pete were left stranded out on their boat and their dog Buddy was getting most concerned as he needed to be ashore for a “Bathroom Break”! We got the three of them safely ashore where they are remaining until the water level drops. This was another successful mission which went well despite the strong current flowing and whilst we were out we did a river patrol to check on the boats afloat in that vicinity of our reach. Nicola

The Chequers Inn: 18 Church Street In 1832, William Bubb wrote his will. He left his house, at the sign of the King’s Arms, occupied by Thomas Buckley, to his wife. A later document identifies this building, and plot extending to the Swilgate, as 18, Church Street. At some point, its name changed to the Three Legs, but in about 1808 the building, including much of the adjoining Bubb’s Alley, was demolished and the present one erected by William Gardner, who called it the Chequers Inn. It remained an inn until 1869, when its last landlord, William Dossett, sold it. William Gardner quickly established a role for the inn as a venue for
agricultural and property auctions. It was also the place where meetings of the Provident Society, a pension fund, were held. William Gardner died in 1828 and the Inn was sold. The next landlord, Charles Creese, stayed for about ten years. Henry White, His successor, was an interesting character. Born in Chipping Sodbury, he was trading as a hosier in Tewkesbury before taking the Chequers in 1841. He had some very esoteric skills. He was a champion quoits player and so proficient at shooting pennies tossed into the air that he was claimed to be the best in the kingdom. He set about making his tavern a venue for musical concerts and for banquets.
He founded the ‘Ancient Abbey’ lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (the White Rose lodge met in the Hop

The notice of sale describes a very substantial premises, with a parlour, tap room, club room and sitting room over the ground and first floors. There were stables with an entrance from the Swilgate Road. It was purchased by William Morse and became a butcher’s shop for many years, most of them trading with the Bloxham name. The butchers seemed to cause more problems than the inn, especially to the now retired Alderman James Blount Lewis, who lived next door. Despite his strong protestations a licence was granted to erect a slaughterhouse at the back. He also wrote to the Council to complain that the ornamental iron verandah (sic) which Mr Morse had erected over the front door and window contravened the bye-laws. The council disagreed, and it remains a feature of the property. There is nothing about the building today which hints at this history, or that it was constructed as an Inn so many years ago.

Pole). In 1842, seventy Oddfellows sat down to dine, so facilities must have been substantial. He was also High Warden of the Cordwainer’s Guild. In 1852, the much more prestigious Hop Pole became available, and Henry White moved there. Henry Groves, the next landlord, continued to offer facilities for middle class clubs and societies. The Conservative Club started to meet there. Indeed, his ‘Housewarming Dinner’ was presided over by William Dowdeswell, MP. More ‘artisan’ interests began to creep in. A dinner for sixty employees of Hancock and Jeynes, working on the new Severn Lock in 1856, refreshments after cricket matches on the Ham and dinners for the Rifle Corps. In 1858, Mr Groves moved to the Black Bear, and trading at the Chequers had clearly become difficult. A ‘free and easy’ musical evening was advertised on Tuesdays. There was a change in political direction with meetings of the Liberal Reform Club.

From BBC to Broadway at Probus Club Most people will know that the BBC recently celebrated a century of broadcasting since its first ever broadcast from 2LO on 14th November 1922 and at Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club our recognition of this was a visit from speaker David Howe who has been to us on several occasions. He is not only an expert in the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the English language but is also an avid enthusiast of radio
entertainment. His talk was entitled “100 years of the BBC” and we enjoyed a morning of pure nostalgia as David with
his relaxed and intimate style brought back many memories of old radio and TV programmes that we all remember from

the help of a slide projector, David sat for the whole morning (only interrupted by our coffee break) and captivated and amused us with all manner of stories from classic radio and TV programmes, never forgotten by members of Probus Club. After visiting RAF Cosford not too long ago we recently enjoyed another one of our external visits to paces of interest and this time we spent a very interesting morning much closer to home at the Broadway Museum. The museum contains many artefacts collected by and donated to the museum over the years but our guides also told us about the history and the changing structure of the building itself, being originally one of many coaching inns in Broad-
way where wealthy travellers arriving by coach were treated to a fine lunch whilst the horses were changed before their journey continued. AROUND KEMERTON’S LAKES
This is one of my favourite winter walks, particularly around Christmas time, as it’s not too taxing if I’ve over indulged(!) - and there is always something interesting to see, writes Jack B. Walker.

Distance: about 4 miles. Paths can be wet/muddy. Parking: street parking, with care, in Back Lane near Saint Nicholas Church Map: not to scale - OS Sheet 190 recommended Refreshments: The Crown Inn, Kemerton, or Kemerton Coffee Shop (seasonal hours).
I suggest wearing footwear suitable for wet ground, and please keep all dogs on leads (livestock in some fields). Park near St Nicholas Church, and walk back towards the heart of the village. At the first junction take the track on the right (1) and walk down until you reach a stream. Keep ahead with the stream to your left, cross a long wooden footbridge over a weir, and bear right into a field (2). Follow the path across it and into another field, bear right and keep the large pond in the grounds of Upper Court to your right, until you reach a stile/gate (3). Cross the stile, bear right and then left on to a track, keeping the hedge to your right. Beyond the hedge is Lower Mill - one of several former mills in Kemerton - which was once the home of the writer and naturalist John Moore. Part of the land behind the house is now a nature reserve, preserved in the late author’s memory. Keep along the path until you reach a small wood on your left. At the end of the wood, bear
sharp right (4), and carry on along the edge of the field until you reach a footbridge (5). Cross and go up the bank and bear right, following the path until you reach a driveway (6). Here turn left, and then left again on to a narrow lane, which bears right. Follow this until you reach the road, turn right and then left (7) through the gate which leads to Kemerton Lake. Follow the lane between the hedges, until you meet another track (8). Turn left here, and carry on along the path through the trees, emerging at Kemerton Lake. The lake and reserve is managed by a conservation trust, and attracts a variety of birds all year round. There is a hide at the end of a jetty where you can observe them. Return to point 8, walk on, then bear left (9) on to a path through the wood, over another footbridge, passing by the nurseries and on to a road. Turn right, walk on to the next path on the right (11), and go down it through a wood. Cross over the track into the Park field (12), and follow the arrows to reach
the road (13). Cross over and then go into and
then across an orchard, to return to Back Lane.

We now appreciate having car parks to enable us to visit businesses in the town. But from what were these parks created?, writes John Dixon. Until the post WWII period St Mary’s Lane was an area of warehouses mixed with people’s homes. The Then A1 photograph suggests they were not well maintained but, later in Then A2 until their demolition in the 1950s, they provided better family homes – this one with its own toilet and a garden reaching back to the Mill Avon. It did, however, suffer from periodic flooding and in one incident they were helped by Rev. Purefoy from the Abbey. The white Boat House was then known as stables and was once occupied by Durrant and Vickeridge, the boatbuilders. It is still a mystery why this was not cleared away with other buildings in the Riverside Walk project, which we can enjoy today. When the area was developed, the cottage 10 St Mary’s Lane (A2) was demolished, but a covered entrance, the outhouse, the living room and garden is in our car park whilst the rest of the house has been rebuilt as (Now: B) Halifax Cottage – was that named after the nearby by disappeared Halifax Works? At one time it made rubber balloons, and the dye turned the Mill Avon into different colours!

Winter Art Exhibition Tewkesbury Art Society hold their annual Winter Art Exhibition on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd December in Tewkesbury Town Hall This year’s exhibition is sponsored by IQ Mobile, a new and up and coming name in the world of mobile phone communications. The exhibition displays work by a
wide range of local artists. There is framed original art, unframed work, prints, and a selection of greeting cards all based on original work by the artists. As well as viewing the art you can also purchase the original work, which would make a unique gift this Christmas. Members of the Society will be in attendance throughout the exhibition. There will be the opportunity to see some of our
members at work, painting new work throughout the day. Entrance is free and is open from 10am to 4pm each day, so call in and see us. Plenty of members attended our AGM at Wheatpieces, and we enthusiastically sang both verses of Jerusalem - an annual treat. One less member this year - but still over 40 of us. To offset our huge £12 loss this year we’ll probably go a bit more digital for next year, but we’ll stick with our crafting traditions, which this year included making cards, bookmarks, scissor-keeps, and eating a Beckford cream tea [!]. CHAPEL COURT AND THE STAR AND GARTER In the sixteenth century, at the time of the dissolution of the monastery, Daniel Perte,’Bailiff to the Lord King’ described a large inn called the Crowne, or New Inn, which backed on to the Swilgate. There is no better information, but the old Star and Garter, now Chapel Court in Barton Street, must be a strong candidate. Another probable reference to this elusive inn is in Thomas Crumpe’s will of 1664. The property he leaves is itemised; two principal bedrooms, with four-poster beds, five other bedrooms, two parlours, seven public rooms (One for playing ‘shuffleboard’) and a warehouse equipped

continued from P43… Leighton. By then, the name had changed to the Star and Garter. He hired out post-chaises and horses and added concerts to the inn’s entertainment repertoire, with evenings of variety
shows at the top-of-themarket price of 2s. In 1796 there was a new landlord, named Bolton. He fell foul of an army officer who was billeted on him, who took advantage of the inn’s hospitality then took him to court
for having the temerity to ask for payment for some of the ‘extras’ he’d demanded. Bolton was fined £2 and was very unhappy about it. The next, and last, landlord was Lewis Prosser. He moved in in 1798. The inn was still the depot for a stage wagon, Birch’s, which left for London every Saturday, as well as a passenger-carrying post coach to Birmingham three times a week. An inside ticket cost 11s; outside 7s. The end came in 1803, when Mr Prosser sold up and moved to the Crown in Evesham. The Star and Garter was bought by the Baptists, who built a new, larger, chapel at the rear of the site, where the stables and cock-pit once were. It opened on June 21 1805. The buildings on the main street, converted to shops and flats, remain, though much altered over the years. The Star and Garter was a hostelry for at least three hundred years, but closed more than two hundred years ago, at the height of the coaching boom in Tewkesbury. By then it was out of the premier league in Tewkesbury, and would have been overshadowed by its close neighbour, the Plough.
