Luke explained that the current footprint of the Black Bear, in Tewkesbury High Street, covers three properties. The original pub was not as wide as it is today and faced the Mythe Road. Over time the Bear expanded into the building, known as the old Rugby club, and space between was incorporated into the property. Luke intends to give each of these areas their own identity, including a sky-lit central space with a lantern roof. Luke has lived in Tewkesbury for six

I have often been asked when the next book by Ann Weisberger would be available. That it is now answered, and the delay since her last novel, "The Promise" in 2013, could well be explained by the obvious research she has invested in this her third book. "The Glovemaker," set during the winter of 1888, revolves around the lives of the settlers in Junction, a small, new settlement, in Utah. The author's notes confirm that while the story is very much fiction, this outpost did exist with the described orchards, which can still be seen today. It is also interesting to think that 1888 is only just over 130 years ago, so you feel from her vivid descriptions how much the landscape has changed in just over a century. Junction is a Mormon outpost of just eight homes, with a schoolhouse, but no church. As you read this book the beliefs and traditions of this religion become very clear so not only is it educational, but it is also an enjoyable read as we follow the lives of the two main characters. Deborah Tyler is at home awaiting the return of her husband, Samuel, a wheelwright who has been away on his annual Autumnal trip repairing other settlers wagons, and was due back early December. His overdue return is naturally concerning, and her neighbours, Nels, in effect a brother-in-law, and Carson go out to look for him, but find their path blocked by a rockfall, which they report back as the cause for
Samuel's delay. This is the gist of the novel, and the relationships between the three main characters, with Deborah's younger sister and husband, who are her immediate neighbours, and the rest of the outpost. However, the adventure within the storyline is injected by a stranger who they help, and a US Marshal, up from Tennessee, who is chasing him, and what happens to him and his two colleagues when they also reach Junction. All of this is set against the bitter cold of a Utah winter: snow, treacherous terrain, and the tension of the treachery and threats the travellers impose on, and to the whole isolated community. As the pages turn these two story lines evolve, and how these events affect the fragile community make for a good read. The book is somewhat more ambitious than "The Promise" or her first novel "The Personal History of Rachel DuPree" back in 2008. Seemingly Ann Weisgarber is intent on giving us stories of the pioneering settlers of North America. We may have to wait a few more years until her next offering. Selected by: Ian B. Carrant Brook Junior School remembers John Savory Staff, pupils and governors of Carrant Brook Junior School in Northway have recognised the contribution made by former governor John Savory, who passed away at the end of last year, aged 84. John’s wife Rita was joined by head teacher Maria Budd to open a special Remembrance Garden at the school last month. “John joined Carrant Brook School’s governing body on 1996, but prior to that volunteered a good deal of his time to the school which was attended by his grandchildren,” said Maria Budd. Former RAF member John was very hands on, as well as helping with hearing children read and assisting with computing. He’d take on tasks

With an engineering background, John was also an invaluable member of Carrant Brook Junior School’s premises committee. “He was a kind, lov-
ing, fun and inspirational man who was always immaculately turned out in jacket and tie - but most importantly, he always wore a smile,” said Maria. “He told many stories of his travels and was a keen photographer and readily shared his photos with the children. They would all laugh when he got their names wrong - but this was, of course, on purpose to bring smiles to their faces.” The Garden was formally opened last month and was decorated with a display of pebbles, painted by the pupils for Remembrance Day.

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK ‘Social distancing’, ‘Bubble’, ‘Furlough’, ‘Zoom’, ‘Lockdown’ are all words that have hijacked our everyday language this year. Covid, (there’s another one!) has thrust these words upon us resulting in restriction, limitation and loss. For many the experience of 2020 has been tragic, devastating and painful. We have all been held hostage to this virus, to a greater or lesser extent. Approaching the festive season this year will be different. The one thing, however, which is not different is the central truth of the message of Good News we celebrate; God is not limited by social distancing! The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, some 2000 years ago broadcasts a message around the world that God is closer than you think. God’s entry into this world in Jesus brought him into our ‘Bubble’ so that whilst we may be locked down, we can never be locked out of his love for us. He understands and shares our hopes and dreams, our grief and sadness, our disappointments and frustrations. He shares it and walks through it with us and is always simply a prayer away. GARDENING ADVICE with Tim Hoskins By designing our garden layout to encourage foraging, climbing and observing we can encourage youngsters to get outside and, without even realising, develop an inherent appreciation of the natural world. Kids love to eat things and are more adventurous if those things aren’t served on plates. Plant edible plants around your garden among the ornamentals and the kids will love exploring and showing off their knowledge to their friends. Try perennial crops like currants, berries or herbs that don’t need planting anew each year. Perennial vegetables like Daubentons kale, cabbage thistle and good king henry can fill gaps and provide more substantial pickings, even if they are less pretty than the herbs. Even some well known garden plants like Mahonia, Berberis, Dahlia and Hosta have edible parts! TEWKESBURY CRICKET CLUB CELEBRATES COUNTY CALL UPS After a rigorous trial process seeing competition from some of the best young cricketers in their respective age groups, four youth players at Tewkesbury Cricket Club are celebrating selection to county cricket squads. Spin bowler Alex Oliver (16) has been selected to train this winter with Gloucestershire County Cricket Under 18s, while All Rounder Louis Whitmore, also 16, will train with Worcestershire County Cricket Under 18s. Both lads currently play in Tewkesbury’s first XI men’s team, having moved up the ranks from the club’s junior cricket set up. Dom Webb (15), a fast bowler who has recently made his TCC second XI debut, has been included in Gloucestershire’s under 15s team. George Teasdale who at just 10 is already getting noticed by the club, has been selected to train in Gloucestershire’s Under 11s North Zone Squad. Wade Ridsdale, Tewkesbury CC Head Coach said: “We invest heavily in our junior players at Tewkesbury, nurturing them to move up into adult cricket. Summer 2020 hasn’t been without its challenges of course, but these lads,
along with others who trialled from the club but were unsuccessful on this occasion have worked so hard, not just on their own game but on making our club facilities second to none. This determination to

Two local history books published by Tewkesbury Historical Society are now on sale at Alison’s Bookshop. ‘Tewkesbury’s Two Forgotten Railways’ (by John Dixon) is a history of the impact of the railway age on the town, with an analysis of who was responsible for the closure of the lines. Also by John Dixon, with research assisted by Linda Kean-Price, is ‘The History of Tewkesbury’s War Hospitals’ (subtitled Alien Duties for the Privileged). The book covers the period 1914-1918. TEWKESBURY NATURE RESERVE APPEALS TO DOG OWNERS TO SHOW CONSIDERATION Dear Tewkesbury Direct, In November Tewkesbury Nature Reserve published an update to its dog access policy requesting all dogs be kept on a lead of 2 metres or less throughout the Reserve. This followed several incidents involving disturbance to wildlife, distress to other users and death of livestock on the Reserve caused by dogs off lead and not under control. As part of the Trustees review of these issues, they conducted an open survey in September in which users of the Reserve cited improvements to prevent dog disturbance as being the most important change they would like to see. Since updating this policy and introducing signs on the Reserve to request users to keep dogs on a lead a minority of individuals have reacted inappropriately and, in some cases, caused criminal damage on the reserve by removing and damaging signs. Reserve staff and volunteers have received abuse and threats whilst out on the Reserve, via email and on social media. Several social media posts have included inaccurate statements about the reasons for the rules and the need to abide by them. It is not the law so why do I have to keep my dog on a lead? Some users of the Reserve have ignored the updated rules having been told by others that there is no criminal law in place to prevent them from exercising their dogs off lead. T e w k e s b u r y Nature Reserve is part owned by the charity and is part lease from Tewkesbury Borough Council. This does not automatically equate to the land being public and as private land with areas designated as ‘Open Access’, public use is granted with certain conditions under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. This includes keeping dogs on a lead of 2m or less during the period from 1st March to the 31st July. There is provision in the Act to extend these restrictions to cover other periods if dogs off lead is not compatible with management of the land. Based on clear evidence and in line with measures taken on other
Nature Reserves nationwide, dogs off the lead is considered incompatible with the Reserve’s conservation, biodiversity and nature recovery management objectives. It is the Trustees duty to uphold these objectives.
The Trustees of the Reserve would like to appeal to dog owners to act responsibly and with respect for other users and wildlife on the Reserve in order that we can continue to maintain and develop it as a safe haven for

SUMMIT TO SEE YEAR ROUND The Malvern Hills are one of my favourite spots for brisk strolls, either on summer evenings or during the shorter days of winter - writes Jack B. Walker. Ideal for blowing away the Christmas cobwebs too! These rolling hills offer excellent trekking country for walkers of a variety of abilities. This short route over high ground is exhilarating on clearer days, with magnificent views across the vale from the summit of Herefordshire Beacon. Park in the pay and display car park on the A449 opposite the Malvern Hills hotel. Leave by the obvious route from the car park up the hill, forking right to ascend to British Camp’s 2000 year old

mit of Herefordshire Beacon (2). To the west the view is towards Welsh hills, with Herefordshire’s famously undulating countryside in between. Looking east the panorama stretches from the Lickey Hills in the north to the Cotswolds in the south. Walk southwards along the edge of the ramparts until you come to a path (3), which descends to an open space. Here there is a circular orientation and direction structure which is worth checking out (4).
AT THE ROYAL HOP POLE, TEWKESBURY
Follow the path as directed to visit curiosity known as Clutter’s (or Giant’s) Cave. This may once have been used as a shepherd’s shelter, as well as being connected to pagan beliefs. Other stories tell of a hermit living here in medieval times. The only certainty is that the cave is man made and has been popular with generations of children of all ages! Retrace your steps to point four and follow the broad track as it skirts around the slopes of the hill. There are various benches along this path where the views can be taken in. As the main track curves around, bear right down a steep grassy path towards the reservoir below (5). If you don’t fancy tackling the descent and prefer to return by a higher route, the track you are on will take you back to the car park. British Camp Reservoir collects water from various hill springs. It

The benefits of neutering your dog During the first lockdown in the spring we welcomed lots of new puppies into the practice and those pups are now around 9 or 10 months of age. This is often the time when owners are considering neutering and so I thought it would be a good idea to discuss this subject in this edition of Tewkesbury Direct. Spaying or castrating your dog is very common in the UK and is considered an important part of responsible pet ownership, assuming that you are not planning on breeding your dog.
What are the benefits of spaying female dogs? Females: There are significant benefits to spaying female dogs, especially before their first or second heat (oestrus) cycle. Aside from eliminating the risk of surprise or unwanted pregnancies, spayed dogs have significantly lower mamma-

ry cancer rates and the removal of the ovaries eliminates the risk of a potentially life-threatening infection called pyometra as well as uterine cancers. A pyometra is a very serious infection and usually requires an emergency neutering operation and medical stabilisation. We have treated a case this week, who thankfully is now on the mend but she was a very poorly dog indeed when she first came into the clinic. At Folly Gardens Vets we offer keyhole (laparascopic) neutering at all our clinics which we have been performing for over 5 years.
I am personally a firm advocate of keyhole neutering. It is quicker, less painful for the patient and the recovery rate is so much faster than a traditional spey. Please speak to the practice if you are thinking of having your female dog neutered and we can discuss the options available to suit you and your pet. And Male Dogs? Male Dogs that are not neutered are at increased risk of developing testicular and prostate disease. Castration removes the testicles and with them the main source of testosterone which can drive many behavioural traits such as roaming, urine marking, aggression to other male dogs in particular circumstances and mounting behaviour. Neutered male dogs are also general-
ly easier to train as they are less..... distracted! Testicular tumours are quite common in unneutered male dogs. Testicular tumours in dogs, just like the female mammary tumours; can be cancerous. Castration completely removes this risk. Benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH for short, is a common disease of the canine prostate. The prostate becomes enlarged under the influence of testosterone and can lead to difficulty when urinating or defecating.
Changes after neutering There are several changes that occur in a dog’s body once they are spayed or castrated. These changes may be more noticeable in males. Neutering won’t change your dog’s personality but it is likely to change sex hormone-driven behaviours. Many owners also report that their dogs are calmer after neutering. Along with the above hormonal changes, changes in metabolism can also occur.
A slower metabolism means that your dog can gain excess weight easily after neutering, making it important to pay special attention to his nutritional needs to ensure that he or she doesn’t become overweight. CELEBRATING 200 YEAR Haywards Tewkesbury Ltd has been trading in Tewkesbury High Street for 200 years through 7 generations of the same family. Founded by George Hayward, a Master Cutler, in 1820 at 123 High Street and soon
after at 125 High Street where the padlock, made in our own workshops, still hangs today. In 1880, 126 High Street, then a china shop, was acquired. Some years later the two shops were amalgamated. The Ironmongers has
traded under the titles of George Haywards, W.E. Hayward, Hayward & Sons and finally in 1934 Haywards Tewkesbury Ltd with branches opened in Upton upon Severn in 1881 and Winchcombe in 1935. The present day

Directors and owners of the Company, Simon and Mark, have both served nearly a quarter of the 200 years and have themselves seen many changes. So what developments have taken place within the Company and along Tewkesbury High Street since 1820 when George IV was King and only 5 years earlier Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo? Ironmongers were commonplace on the High Street in those days along with grocers, greengrocers, bakers, butchers, milliners, cobblers and haberdashers. Much of the goods sold were locally sourced, although we took deliveries from river barges, often unloaded at 9.00pm. Not too much of a problem as our opening hours were 7.00am – 8.00pm weekdays and 9.00pm on a Saturday. The introduction of the railway to Tewkesbury improved our circumstances with all the rooms above our shops used as stock rooms. One room for polishes, one for paint, one for china, one for lamp glasses and so on. Nowadays nearly all of the stock is on display in the shops allowing customers to browse. During this Covid pandemic we have almost reverted back to the old ways with customers waiting at the counters whilst goods are brought to them. Huge changes came with the invention of the internal combustion engine. Deliveries were no long made by horse and cart but with company vehicles that delivered essential items to outlying villages and farms. Paraffin, gas and tractor vaporising oil were all required for cooking, lighting and power. Leclanche cells
were collected, recharged and delivered back to customers to power their radios. We opened agricultural workshops within the market places of Tewkesbury and Upton upon Severn and a retail shop in Gloucester market - all markets now sadly gone. It followed that we were the first to sell petrol in the Town in 2 gallon cans along with bicycles and the first motorised Atco cylinder mower. Combine harvesters were delivered to Tewkesbury railway station in packing crates with sacks full of nuts and bolts. It took 2 mechanics a week to build the machine on the farm. With the introduction of mains water and electricity to most homes, our staffing levels rose from 20 to about 70 with the employment of electricians, plumbers and builders. We already had in-house a blacksmith, tinsmith and whitesmith since 1900. Our electricians installed the first power into Tewkesbury Abbey with our blacksmith making the chandeliers that supported the lighting between the columns of the nave. Holes were punched through many feet of stonework with star chisels before the introduction of power tools. Our connection with Tewkesbury Abbey has continued through the years with the installation of the flue pipes running from the 2 Gurney stoves up to the base of the tower, More recently a 10� rim lock key has been made by us to fit a 200 year old lock in the porch entrance door. Many of the tradesmen who were employed by the company served apprenticeships very often straight from

You could travel to the nearest large town or city and shop in Department Stores and in multinational shops. Supermarkets soon followed with ‘out of town’ parking, stocking lines that overlapped on goods traditionally sold by many High Street shops. Now with internet purchasing you can shop from the comfort of your armchair and run the risk of ordering goods without the guidance of expert advice and being deprived of a pleasurable shopping experience where you select and

Christmas at The Roses After a nail-biting few weeks where we weren’t quite sure what would happen post-lockdown 2.0, everybody at The Roses breathed a sigh of relief when we did emerge the other side and were able to reopen as planned on 2 December. NEWTOWN WI Along with everyone else we have not been able to meet as usual, but we have tried to embrace technology. Whilst the weather was good, we held socially distanced meetings in gardens, but since then we have reverted to Zoom. We have managed to have WI Zoom meetings, the first being a harvest theme and the November one was a ‘remembrance’ meeting with members wearing poppies singing ‘I vow to thee my country’. Although we have not been able to hold meetings our members have been keeping themselves busy making masks and scrubs bags for the NHS, as well as giving support to our more vulnerable members and holding small garden tea parties in order to keep in touch, and stop people feeling too isolated. One of our members has kept us all entertained throughout with her monthly “Lockdown Experience” emails, which have been really amusing. We are all looking forward to when can meet again for our regular meetings and welcome all members but old and new.

Pupils at Bredon School Open ‘The Shack’ - Farm Shop and Cafe Bredon School Business and Enterprise pupils, from Years 10 to 13, have recently launched a brand new farm shop and cafe called ‘The Shack’. Profits made are being donated to the charity FairShare South West which distributes food to charities, schools and community groups including children’s clubs, homeless hostels and refuges. Open to pupils, parents and the public, The Shack sells a range of locally sourced and handmade products, as well as offering hot and cold refreshments and home-baked goodies. There are plans to sell more farm and horticultural produce too. From the initial idea to the branding and sourcing of the products and the setup of the shop displays, pupils have driven this initiative. Many of the products for sale have been made by pupils during
their Enterprise lessons, upcycling activity sessions and spare time. Examples include con-

PREGNANCY AND THE SKELETON During pregnancy the body goes through extraordinary changes. One of the changes which is of particular interest to manual therapists is the ability for the body to produce a hormone which creates laxity in the ligaments. Many women suffer with pelvic and hip pain during the latter stages of pregnancy and this is often assumed to be alleviated once the woman has given birth. However, a change in the alignment of some joints can be altered and if these are not brought back to their neutral position, as the hormone levels drop the ligaments tighten and this can lead to joints being in a less than ideal position. If the mother decides to breast feed , the ligament laxity will continue, but in a milder form, during the breast feeding period. Often the change in joint position even if mild, can be asymptomatic, meaning there is no discomfort felt in direct relation to the dysfunction.
However, over time as the skeleton is loaded and used in different ways, this will result in uneven wear of the joints. I highly recommend any woman to consult a manual therapist after

The wildflowers and butterflies of the Spring and Summer are now a distant memory and the Autumn colours are fading, but Tewkesbury Nature Reserve is still an important haven for wildlife. The area is a particularly valuable habitat for overwintering and migratory birds some of which are visitors from as far away as the Arctic Tundra. The Fieldfare, a member of the Thrush family and a Red List species threatened by population decline, is one of these visitors. They can be seen gathering in the willow trees, feeding on berries in the hedges or hopping in large groups across the fields with their bluish-grey heads and orange-brown wings providing some much needed colour to the short winter days.

Without undisturbed area like this these species, with their long straight bill, short legs and a characteristic brown streaky appearance, would have disappeared from lowland

The scrapes and pond edges are also the winter home for Green Sandpiper, another species that is on the Amber List due to population decline. An all year round resident that breeds on the

VOLUNTEERING WITH TEWKESBURY NATURE RESERVE Tewkesbury Nature reserve (TNR) has had a great response to calls for volunteers. The most impressive was a (socially distanced) party of people working in the pouring rain a few weeks ago, helping to develop a composting area and clear scrub and wood debris in the orchard and adjacent field. Everyone got soaked, but seemed to enjoy it! There is now a call for volunteers for a different area of work; help managing the Supporter's Group. This could be anything from sending out application forms and managing the incoming forms, to looking for ways to encourage new members. It should only take up an hour or two a week on average and would be a great help TNR. Anyone with fundraising skills and experience is welcome to come forward too, if they have some time to spare. TNR is run almost completely by volunteers, and its only fixed source of income is through an Environmental Stewardship Agreement with Natural England, most of which is directed to everyday management of the reserve. Later owners of Northway House - the Misses Fair - loaned them for Garden Fetes etc for the community – there was a lake with a stone bridge, a rose arbor / pergola and of course the “stone edifice, memorial or monument” amongst other attractions. The Northway Estate was requisitioned during the war, and afterwards in 1948 Cheltenham Rural District Council purchased 25 acres to build the Northway Estate. The House, Lodge and Gardens – about six acres – were purchased by the Holt Brewery Company of Birmingham. The Stone Edifice has been the source of some discussion in the area over the years. One theory general discounted - is that it was a memorial on burial ground for the Ashchurch cholera victims. Wendy Snarey says that it could well be a marker for the burial of a favourite pet dog or horse. This could be true as the property was advertised in 1886 as “being of great advantage being in a district hunted by 6 packs of Foxhounds - The Cotswolds, North Cotswolds, The Croome, The Worcestershire. Berkeley, and The Ledbury, besides Harriers.” It is also possible that the obelisk was one of the ornamental structures contained in the pleasure grounds, as shown on the OS map of 1885 near the Lodge entrance at the divide of the Carriage Drive leading to the Stables on the one side and the front entrance on the other. 䡵 Not all locals were entirely happy about the recent clearance work which revealed the obelisk. We understand the council has received complaints.
