JOE’S CRAFTY CREATIONS Inspired by upcycling TV programmes and YouTube inventors, local teenager Joe Bowen has been getting creative. Joe, 15, decided to learn his craft and use it as the “skill” section of his Silver Duke of Edinburgh award, which he has recently completed through the Extreme Explorer Scout unit, who are based in Twyning. Joe, a Tewkesbury School student who lives in the town, enjoys making something new out of old interesting objects. Joe says; “Yes - it’s hard work, but it’s also great fun.” He first began building things when he designed and made, with his parents help, a fort for the garden - using old pallets and planks of wood. He moved on to other skills by making a home furnace from not much more than a steel bucket, plaster-of-paris, charcoal and his mum's hairdryer. After watching a few YouTube videos he was able to melt down aluminium drinks cans to make interesting shapes for future crafting use.

More recently, he has purchased and re-purposed a couple of old car engine cylinder heads, creating two glasstopped side tables. Joe was grateful to local company Architectural Products for making the glass tops.
Joe at work Joe believes that young people should be given the chance to do activities like this, but that due to safety worries and lack of support, parents don’t always allow their children to use creativity in this way.

Joe’s reindeer, made from horseshoes Joe was given a small basic welder last Christmas, which has enabled him to have a go at something different. After being given a bag of old horse shoes by a family friend, he has researched and made some lovely reindeer. Each one took a few hours to make. The horseshoes first need cleaning, then grinding before welding and spraying to create the final piece. He has since sold eight reindeer as Christmas decorations! What’s next for Joe? “I’d like to be able to work on an old car and get it looking decent, he said. “I might try this as my skill section for my Gold
Duke of Edinburgh award, but I can’t start that until I’m 16, so for now I’ll have to settle with restoring old lamps and welding random stuff.”

We have had to wait seven years for a new book by Nicole Krauss, who is probably best known for "The History of Love", but it was her last book "Great House" that convinced me she has a lot to offer her readership, and which was my book of the year way back in 2011. "Forest Dark" is a book in two parts, as each chapter alternates between a different main character, but their stories have some connections to each other, sharing the Hilton hotel in Tel Aviv as a central location, and New York as their home city. Jules Epstein is a successful retired lawyer, at 68, recently divorced, and against professional advice, he is actively giving away much of his worldly wealth following the death of his parents. His old city life is slipping away from him, he behaves strangely, until he flies out to Israel where his adventures begin.

Later, Epstein forsakes the Hilton for lodgings with few basic comforts. He becomes involved with the making of a film, and each strand of his new life involves further removal from his previous existence.

The other character is a novelist approaching 40 who is suffering from what might be writer's block, as she is taking time to find the subject of her new book. She imagines certain happenings at home where she has two sons, and a broken marriage. The author travels, on impulse, to Tel Aviv staying at the Hilton, where, like Epstein there are family memories to recall. Then after a random meeting she starts some research into the lost papers of Franz Kafka. She too is on a possible wild goose chase. Each of the two principal characters lives are multi-layered. Krauss delivers an unusual story, achieving much within the pages of her novel. Starting in New York, relocating to Tel Aviv, an Israeli kibbutz and the desert. READERS WRITE to Tewkesbury Direct Dear Tewkesbury Direct, In June 2019 I received the tragic news that my husband Andrew Murray was killed in a road traffic collision. As a family, our world was shattered. During the first week I received a green book from a charity called Brake, whoa are a road safety charity that help and support those who have lost a loved one
killed on the road. Brake do a virtual run during the month of September in memory of the 1,774 killed on the roads each year. Being part of a running group for many years, this was the motivation I needed to get back running and make awareness of this fantastic charity and the work they do. Together Tewkesbury Allrunners and other local
running groups came together and formed a team of 64 members and ran over 4000km and raised over £2000 for Brake. Tewkesbury Parkrun held an event where everyone worn yellow in support of brake and Wetherspoons' in Tewkesbury supported the charity. Emma Murray

The Roses Choir - an antidote to Brexit? Nearly two years ago I noticed an advertisement for a ‘Taster Singing Workshop’ at the Roses Theatre, writes Christine Devereux. I happened to be free that morning, due to a cancelled appointment so I decided to attend. I was rather apprehensive - recalling several embarrassing school music lessons - but an hour later emerged triumphant and relieved, having survived the taster workshop. Not only that, I felt surprisingly energised and positive, having enjoyed some hearty singing with twenty or so other participants. This in itself seemed a good reason to join the Roses Choir, regardless of whether I could sing ‘well’ or not. The song we performed was Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’ which went on to become the choir’s theme tune, and is all about being positive. Since then our mixed choir has grown to some thirty five members, ranging from seasoned singers to complete novices (like me!). We are lucky to be taught by Lindsay Martin - a professional voice coach and singer who teaches us lots of

ways of warming up before we sing. Every new session presents challenges and whilst we try our best, ‘being perfect’ is not the intention. Lindsay emphasises the importance of enjoyment and having fun. Over the past eighteen months we have been involved in a growing number of performances and concerts. These have include busking in the streets, crooning on a river boat, Christmas Carols at Croome Park, and several shows at Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre. Participation in these is always optional, but
very rewarding, especially when you see the audience singing along! On a personal level, I have found that every aspect of the choir is a real bonus. It’s lovely to escape from everyday worries for one morning a week. There is something about singing together that lifts you out of yourself and makes you feel different, plus the sense of achievement that comes with learning every new song. Singing in the Roses Choir may not be the antidote to ‘Brexit’ - but it certainly takes your mind of it! Christine Devereux.

TALKING OF TEWKESBURY by Amanda Orton I'd always assumed that the Priors Park Neighbourhood Project was only open to people living in Priors Park, but in fact, this community hub is for anyone living in Tewkesbury Borough and beyond, writes Amanda Orton. And for anyone who doesn't know where it is - I didn't - it's next door to the Queen Margaret Primary School at Jubilee II in York Road. Ruth Ward is the Project Manager of PPNP and we had a long chat about the various activi-

This registered charity was formed in 2004 and it strives to support the four themes of Education, Health, Community Safety and Cohesion and Environment. It offers regular activities such as job clubs and careers advice, art groups, Rhymetime, keep fit, cookery classes , budgeting and basic IT classes. The main hall and meeting rooms have
wheelchair access and are also available for other groups to hire when needed. There are also free advice drop ins with the Citizens Advice and Green Square housing, as well as mindfulness and well-being sessions and youth clubs for those aged 7-16 with HOPP (Heart of Priors Park). Sunday lunches and older men's group lunches are also provided free of charge, although

Ex-Jesmond House, November 2019 It is amazing how a hole which has quickly appeared in Chance Street in November 2019 attracts comment from passers-by and stimulates memories, writes John Dixon. I knew that Jesmond House Surgery was on the site but Melanie Kisby remembered that it had only been built in the 1980s after the doctors left Trafalgar House on the High Street – a gap in my knowledge! I did know that, before that, the site had been

Jesmond House Surgery occupied since 1906 by a council yard. The far right of the site was in fact the track of the 1840 railway, as it threaded its way from Ashchurch, past the industrial malting, on to the High Street station and, ultimately, Healings Mill. The builders intend providing a three-home terrace and we can only hope that its occupants will be content - and appreciate the historic heritage of the site. Famous for its exhibitions, Tewkesbury Methodist Church, situated right by the Town Cross, will be displaying in the church beautiful Christmas trees from Tuesday 10th December to Saturday 21st December. new novel by local author Pilrig Publishing are delighted to announce the publication of a new novel from Andrew Chapman The Rib of Adam, out this month. Andrew lives in Bredon and is the author of three previous novels published over the last nine years. He was previously a GP in Tewkesbury. The Rib of Adam is a historical novel set in Southwest France, early in the 13th Century. A young woman is taking her dying father on a long journey to undergo a strange initiation ceremony. Grazide, the daughter of a blacksmith is deeply disturbed by what her father has insisted she should do. This is the era when many inhabitants of the region are involved in heresy, principally the unorthodoxy known as Catharism. The story starts at a time when she is growing up in a small village. It is a time of conflict. Northern French forces have been recruited by the Church into a war against the heretics, the Albigensian Crusade and the land is being systematically despoiled, its people ravaged. Her village and her family are not unaffected. As she matures into womanhood she finds her independent nature and her selfdetermination opposed by the misogyny of the age. Despite this she
struggles to assert her belief in her own autonomy. We follow events that encompass the aftermath of war, the building of model new towns known as bastides, and the devastating Papal inquisition that seeks to eliminate heresy from the region once and for all. This is a novel whose strong narrative carves out a vivid picture of these turbulent times at the same time exposing the forces that seek to oppress a woman who strives to take possession of her own life. The Rib of Adam is available from December 4th in alison’s bookshop in Tewkesbury. It can also be ordered through any good bookshop or from Amazon. A Kindle edition is available. Andrew will be at alison’s on Saturday, December 7th from 10 am to 12 pm to talk about his new book and to sign copies. All are welcome.

Volunteering at the Roses Theatre The Roses Theatre has a small paid staff team that run the day-to-day operation of the Theatre, but we increasingly rely on the support of our volunteers. The Roses currently have over 70 volunteers on our books and they range from 13 year olds undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh Award Volunteering sessions to long serving volunteers in their 80s who have supported the Roses for over 30 years. Our volunteers have variety of roles and responsibilities at the Theatre. These include working on our sales areas, the bar, kiosk and coffee shop. They also help with fundraising activities, distributing brochures and helping with odd jobs around the building. The main role you will see our volunteers is as ushers in the auditorium. They will check tickets and assist any of customers who need additional help. For live events, we need at least eight volunteers on duty and four for films. What do our volunteers get out of helping the theatre? – I think one of the main benefits is the camaraderie and family feeling between the volunteers and the staff. We are a small regional theatre and the community feeling is
important to the Roses team and its customers. The Roses also offers work placements to individuals who are looking to get back into employment following a time out of work for a multitude of reasons. Through these schemes, we have helped to re-build confidence and new skills that have enabled people to get back into paid work. We also offer Work Experience placements to children during year
10. We have excellent relationships with many local schools and many students find their week in The Roses as a valuable experience in understanding theatre life. Members of a children’s writing club at Tewkesbury Library are celebrating the release of their first book. The Tewkesbury Library Creative Writing Group was set up a couple of years ago after a 12year-old girl suggested the idea to the library. It started with four members and is now made up of about 10 children, aged seven to 15. The talented group has written a children’s storybook between them called Carrots and the Baby. It is about a toy rabbit called Carrots, who lives in Tewkesbury Library and has exciting adventures when he wakes up at night and falls into stories. Local artist Marion Yeo has illustrated the book and the illustrations are based on the library itself. It will be printed on 24 October at Packwood Printers and 25 copies of the book will be on sale for £3.50 each during half-term, starting on Monday 28 October. If enough funds are raised from the sales the money may be used for a second print run or to extend creative writing activities for this age group in Tewkesbury. Marion’s own artwork, as well as the original paintings for the book, will be on display at the library from Monday 28th October to Saturday 9th November and there will also be special storytime sessions and activities featuring the book. On Monday 28th October at 2.30pm and on Friday 1 November at 10.30am, sessions called ‘Imagination Story Station – reading, sharing, creating and playing with stories’ aimed at KS1 children will be held. There will also be an exciting display by interactive design studio Stand and Stare. Marion Yeo said: “I was excited to get involved in this project as it gave me an oppor-
tunity to do a different style of art, which I enjoyed a lot. When I read the group’s story I thought it was a great achievement and wonderfully imaginative. Along with their suggestions and ideas, the story easily inspired lots of visual images which helped me to create the illustrations. I hope lots of people visit the library to buy a copy.” Cllr Dave Norman, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for libraries, said: “The creative writing group at Tewkesbury Library should be very proud of their efforts. The members of the club have written a wonderful story and shown great initiative to get it printed. This shows how libraries can help develop the great talents of young people in our communities and I wish them every future success.”

CHRISTMAS PUDDING Provided by Birdlip W.I. Ingredients: 2.5lb finely chopped beef suet 2lbs well chopped stoned raisins • 2lbs currants 2lbs breadcrumbs • 2lbs grated carrots 1 teaspoon mixed spice • 1 grated nutmeg 4 eggs, well beaten • 1 tablespoonful salt • Half pint of old rum (old ale will do) • Juice and grated rind of 2 lemons • 2lbs sugar Mix all well together, and use only sufficient flour to chop the suet. The carrots will not be ‘tasted’ but they bring out the other flavours. Boil the pudding for eight hours, and when wanted for use steam for three hours.

STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
DANELECTRO 56 U2 Utilitarian. No Frills. Functional. These were the watchwords of Nat Daniel, creator of Danelectro guitars, writes Paul Thomas. Like Leo Fender, Nat Daniel was not a guitarist; electronics were his speciality. And also, like Fender, Daniel’s approach to problem solving produced distinctive and original instruments with one eye on price and the other on the practical needs of the user. That their products would go on to become style icons was never the intention of either man! Nat Daniel’s first contribution to the music business was to build amplifiers for Epiphone who were pleased with his efforts and who wanted to sign him to an exclusive contract. Instead, Nat decided to strike out on his own. In 1947, he founded the Danelectro company, producing amplifiers for American department store and catalogue giants, Montgomery Ward and Sears & Roebuck. The success of this enterprise encouraged Nat to try his hand at building a guitar. He decided to aim for the budget end of the market so that young and aspiring musicians could get their hands on an affordable and reliable electric guitar. During 1954 and 1955, the earliest models began to come onto the market, badged either as ‘Silvertone’ when sold by Sears or simply ‘Danelectro’. By 1956, the classic Danelectro production techniques had become established. The U1 and U2 models were distinguished by their use of either one or two ‘lipstick’ pickups. Encased in metal tubes designed for the burgeoning lipstick industry, these simple, single-coil units produced (and still produce) a unique tone, especially when coupled with Danelectro’s other dollar-saving idiosyncrasies. Chief among these was a hollow body consisting of a poplar frame sandwiched between two masonite boards and edged with a strip of vinyl. This produced a body which was strong, lightweight and cheap to manufacture. It also helped to produce a great chimey tone but this was of secondary importance to Nat Daniel! Other typical Danelectro features included a steel nut, a reinforced neck that required no truss rod and concentric stacked tone and volume knobs. The guitars sold well over the next decade, Danelectro went from strength to strength and then in 1966 Nat Daniel sold the company to MCA. Perhaps Daniel had seen the writing on the wall because MCA were only able to keep the brand afloat for another three years before halting production. Imported copy guitars from Japan were getting good and Danelectros seemed a little dated. However, the story didn’t quite end there. In the late 90’s the Evets Corporation purchased the Danelectro name and for a few short years produced some excellent revivals of Danelectro classics. It is from this period that the uber cool ’56 U2 currently on show at Strummers hails. A test is highly recommended and, you never know, your signature tone might be waiting for you and closer than you think! AUDITS IN PHARMACY The role of Community Pharmacy is being used more and more to ensure patients get the best possible health care package of care, writes Peter Badham. Since 1st October diabetic patients have been offered advice and support on eye checks and foot screening. Patients on prescription medicines of the same class as Nurofen are being checked to make sure they have the correct protection in place to reduce the chance of stomach ulcers. Other patients on lithium and methotrexate are being checked to ensure they have the required blood checks and support. Peter Badham I welcome this move as the pharmacist is accessible on most high streets and communities, and we can make a real difference to patients wellbeing. Prevention is always better than cure.

This month’s critter, the bearded dragon, is a small reptile. These spiky-scaled lizards can grow to be nearly two feet long. They are generally light brown to golden red in colour, and they blend in well with rocky, desert environments. Bearded dragons can be found all over the continent of Australia. Christmas is an indulgent time of year where we look forward to sharing festive treats with family and friends while relaxing and enjoying good company. It is also the perfect opportunity to spoil our furry friends with a few little extra luxuries. Unfortunately this is a time where accidental poisonings become more likely as we sit in a darkened room before clearing away the left-over Christmas dinner, leave Christmas cake on the side board, the mince pies and Christmas pudding beside it, along with the giant box of chocolates Auntie brought round! Dogs and cats are not small furry humans, and as such metabolise substances very differently to us! This means there are many items we eat quite happily but are toxic to dogs or cats. During the holiday season common accidental poisons seen are from grapes, raisins, chocolate, walnuts and cooked bones. Throughout the year we have also recently seen poisonings from wild mushrooms, antifreeze, human medications, garlic and avocados.
It is very tempting to spoil our pets over the festive period, however suddenly changing their diet can cause upset stomachs or other complications. Any food with high fat content or that has been cooked in a lot of fat not only causes your dog to become overweight but it can make your dog very poorly. Be careful to keep the meat-roasting pan well away from your dog as the fat produced by the roast meat will be incredibly tempting but can cause life-threatening illness, such as pancreatitis. Having returned from their jaunts this year our clients are now looking for inspiration for their next trip away. Believe it or not we are actually booking as far ahead as October 2021! Hotspots for next year seem to be Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It’s also great to see Turkey and Egypt increasing in popularity, especially with the reintroduction of flights to Sharm El-Sheik. Sara has just returned from a fabulous trip with her mum and her son to Morocco. It was a small group family adventure with Exodus Travel. Here is what she thought: “Travelling in a small group, designed for families, was great as there were a number of children of similar ages. The tour is designed for children 9 – 14 years of age and was comfortably paced. “There are some long journeys and it was great to be with a guide who knew the best place to stop for an impromptu football match on a remote football field, or where to stop for the
best couscous and tagines in small local cafes where children are well catered for.
Sara “One morning I got up early while staying in a mountain gite in the remote village of Tijhza. My son and I wrapped up in blankets - the stars were beautiful, as there is no light pollution the sky looked massive. We watched local villagers cycling to work in the fields. “The baker arrived early and soon we could
Stephanie Jepson smell the aroma of fresh bread and porridge with local honey. “Also travelling through the Sahara Deserts on camels was great fun. One of my favourite memories is standing on top of a sand dune watching the sunset over the Sahara, it was a beautiful experience.” If you are thinking of heading away for some winter sun my hidden gem this month is Ajman in the United Arab Emirates – it is the Middle East’s best kept secret and only a 30 minute transfer from Dubai Airport. It has an 18th century fort, wetlands and souks. More laid back than its neighbour Dubai and a lot less developed it has beautiful white sandy beaches and has accommodation to suit all budgets. It’s great for a beach break or a stop over.

To enter Battle of the Bands, bands are invited to submit a video to us by 31st January. The top six bands shortlisted will be invited to perform a 15 minute set on 7th March on the Roses stage. Newtown W.I. Following another successful and busy year of activities with our WI the AGM in November was an opportunity to thank everyone who works hard to keep our group running smoothly. Highlights this year were the GFWI Centenary Fair in Cirencester Park and the displays and celebration service in Gloucester Cathedral in October. Angela Hugman’s ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ were about events which happened on her many travels to exotic countries for work or holidays. She had no visual aids but skillfully kept us entertained with her fascinating stories. On December 11th we look forward to some ‘Christmas Capers’ and a ‘Bring and Share’ supper. Coventry University Students Visit Tewkesbury Postgraduate Marketing students from Coventry University recently visited Tewkesbury as part of their course. The students have been tasked with supporting the 2021 Tewkesbury Together project: a year of fantastic historical, cultural and family events in celebration of the 900th anniversary of the consecration of Tewkesbury Abbey and the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury. Local marketing agency, iPlus Marketing (the official media partners for 2021 Tewkesbury Together), met with students at the Abbey to discover more about their visit.

student commented, “I’ve learned a lot about Tewkesbury as a destination and as a client. It’s great that the university is providing us with tools to practice our learning in the real world.” Another remarked, “Tewkesbury is a beautiful place with stunning architecture.” In preparation of the big year, the 2021 Tewkesbury Together committee will be organising many exciting events and asking the public to get involved in the project. MITTON W.I. November is here and our A.G.M. was well attended. Claire has agreed to remain as our very hard working president and our current committee members all agreed to remain too. COLD WEATHER
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, you will often hear people complaining that their joints hurt more in the cold weather. This is a well heard phase within our practice and many others. It is true that there is much anecdotal evidence of this but if we address this scientifically as to why joints and muscles would hurt when the weather gets cooler we might better understand the reason why. Joints like to move and muscles like to be warm. If muscles lose heat then blood flow is limited to these areas. The body needs to make sure that the core body temperature does not drop, therefore if an area gets cool and there is not sufficient extra heat within the body to allow for this drop then the blood supply to this area will be limited. This has the effect of making this area cooler. Muscles work at their best when they are warm and blood flow to them is satisfactory. If we can maintain a good core temperature then the blood flow to extremities will remain good and the efficiency of muscles will remain. Joints can sometimes feel stiffer in the colder

months, this is mainly due to a combination of not moving as much and muscular tightness. As I mentioned, joints like to move. In the winter we tend to do less outside, not walking as far, less gardening and less activity in general. This results in the joint fluid within a joint not lubricating the joint as well as if it were being used more. Also, muscles which are tight due to inactivity or reduced
Katie Hogg blood flow from being cold, tend to approximate the joints causing further reduction in movement. So, do joints and muscles hurt more in colder weather? Yes, they often do. Severn Unit MVS rescues stricken boat from Tewkesbury flood When it was reported that a sailing boat had been washed down the flooded River Avon at Tewkesbury during the late October floods and was stuck fast under a bridge, Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was called out to see if they could help. Head of Unit Nic Price said “The boat was on its side in the middle of the very swollen river after its mast got caught under the bailey bridge at Tewkesbury. “It was in a very dangerous and awkward position and had it sunk there it would have blocked navigation of the river so we had to work quickly to free it. “The boat had obviously floated off from the local sailing club when the river level rose so quickly overnight and it was still attached to its heavy trailer. We deployed our Rigiflex dinghy with MVS crew members Russ Davidson and David Wilson who got a long rope attached to it and eventually they managed to free the boat and right it. “Working with staff from Avon Navigation Trust and Tewkesbury Marina other members of Severn Unit were able to pull the yacht and trailer to safety and make it fast for collection by the owners.”

MARINA COURT - BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT Marina Court was built in 2007 with a large landscaped grass area at the rear of the main building bordering the Marina and the river Avon. In 2011 it was noticed how much wildlife - rabbits, ducks, foxes, hedgehogs included used the area. A plan was formed to install a pond which could be used by the regular animals, and hopefully to encourage new visitors. Funds were raised and the pond created, which quickly became popular with the ducks, newts, frogs and other dwellers. Next a grant was obtained to install a summer house, so the pond could be better enjoyed by residents, as well as friends, relatives and members of the wider community who come to participate in Marina Court's extensive activity programme. Subsequent development saw the addition of a sensory walk called Blackberry Way. This features an orchard area which yields some fruit for community consumption and an avenue of bird feeders, so residents of Marina Court can look down on visiting birds. In 2018-19 a rockery, boules court and raised beds were constructed to complete

the landscaping of the area. In the last phase The Shed was added, which the local Rotary Club furnished with tools from Workaid. The Shed and the Summerhouse are both places for people to meet in the summer months within a natural area of tranquillity. The whole development has been constructed with a keen regard for the existing bio-diversity. Rabbitproof plants were chosen rather than deter rabbits. Shrubs that attract butterflies have been planted on Butterfly Beach around the pond and everyone is very excited when the ducks come to the pond to mate! Some other wildlife projects are in the pipeline for next year, particularly hedgehog preservation. Other suggestions are welcome. The Fox and Hounds in Bredon now delighting patrons from far and wide, with culinary delights The Fox and Hounds public house in Bredon has recently been bought by the Cotswold Brewery, Donningtons, and after a super refurbishment is now under the stewardship of local businessman Lee Martin. Lee told us, “The Fox and Hounds is a thatched picture postcard pub, and taking it over feels like fulfilling a destiny. I grew up in Bredon and I will always remember visiting for meals on very special occasions. I even washed the cars of guests visiting the pub for Sunday roasts in the early nineties here! Probus Club of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill recently had an extremely hard-hitting and at times harrowing talk on the subject of domestic abuse presented by Heather Downer who is the manager of Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Service (GDASS). Heather talked in striking detail about the level of domestic abuse her department has to deal with on a daily basis. Most people think of this subject as domestic violence, but the much more sinister issue of domestic abuse covers a wide range of behaviours all intended to control, dominate or threaten a partner or family member using various ploys to break down the partner’s confidence and to control their lives. Since 2015 when it was criminalised, the new terminology of coercive control has been used to describe examples such as stalking, telling the partner what to wear, controlling finances, name calling and even preventing the partner from going to work. Heather showed us some shocking statistics about the level of domestic abuse in the UK today, for example that one in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse, two women are killed every week in the UK as a result of domes-
tic abuse and on average, the police receive a 999 call relating to domestic abuse every 30 seconds. Because people subjected to domestic abuse are in a close relationship, many victims either feel powerless to do something about it or perhaps feel a bond with the partner because of the time they have been together, maybe explaining why typically victims are subjected to an average of 30 incidents of domestic abuse before seeking help from support organisations like GDASS. Heather gave us some horrific examples of how men (usually but not always men) use subterfuge to control their partner’s lives to break their partner’s selfbelief. In one particular example, Heather told us of how a husband used trickery to undermine his wife by inviting friends around to dinner without telling his wife, implying that she had forgotten the invitation and that her memory was failing and that she
should be seeing the doctor. Imagine the effect of having “memory issues” on her medical record on that woman’s life and future health and confidence – all due to domestic abuse. Readers may be interested to know that starting on 25th November, GDASS is running a 16
day initiative entitled ‘Our Community against Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence’ as part of the ‘International 16 Days of Action’, advising on how to support family or friends who may have been affected in your community. By Chris Brown for Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club.

This piece is based upon a video clip that I saw on the Internet and felt that it was worth sharing writes David Slater. It was in a large bustling city that this took place. The city was always busy with people going to and from work, with cars making their journeys through the traffic, with shoppers and tourists, all intent on what they needed to do. Outside one department store a young lad sat on the stone steps. He had a tin mug by his feet and a sign which had been written on the back of a cardboard packet. The lad was blind. He had sat on these steps many times over the years. He was without a supportive family and needed money to buy food. The sign, by the way, said:

by or even crossed the road. They gave him nothing, not even a few seconds of their time to read the card! And then something different happened. A man walked by and stopped. He put some coins into the tin mug and was amazed at how little money the lad had actually received. He took a pen from his pocket and picked up the sign, all of the time remaining absolutely silent. He turned the card around and wrote some new words on the card. He put the sign back where it had been and went on his way. Now anyone passing by would see a new set of words. The mug soon began to fill up. A lady put a hat down by it because there was no room left for her coins. And so it continued. More and more people were giving money to the blind lad. Time passed and around mid afternoon the man who had changed the sign came back to see how things were going. Still the man said nothing but the lad recognised the man's footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who altered my sign this morning when you walked by? What did you write?” The man said, “It's quite simple really. I just wrote the truth. I wrote down what you had said but in a slightly different way. I will tell you what I wrote:
TODAY IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY, BUT I CANNOT SEE IT! Can you see what has happened here? The man was right when he said that both signs were actually saying the same thing. Yes. The lad was blind. That is all that the first sign said. Simply, the lad was blind. So what about the second sign? Wasn't that saying the same? Well, yes it was, but it was also telling people very clearly that they were very fortunate that they were not blind as they could see that it was a beautiful day. The second sign really made them think and actually helped them to be thankful for what they had the gift of sight. This had made such a difference. The lad was so grateful to the man. Yes he was blind but today, rather than cry, he was able to smile and said to the man, “Thank you for your kindness. Sometimes life can be really tough but today has shown me that I have so many reasons to smile too. That is something I will never forget.” It encourages us to be thankful for what we have and creative in how we can help others. A terrific lesson to take on board. David Slater
