FATHER CHRISTMAS AMONG THE EXHIBITS The real and most genuine Father Christmas is going to be visiting Tewkesbury Museum in Barton Street on Saturday 17th December 2011.

A Tewkesbury quilting group has raised £600 for the Midland Air Ambulance, following an exhibition of their work in the town. Theoc Quilters, which meets every second Wednesday of the month at Ashchurch Village Hall, raised the money at their July show at the Methodist Hall. As well as making items for themselves, the group also makes quilts for the Linus Charity. When children from Chernobyl visited Tewkesbury in the Summer, each of them was given a quilt to take back to the Ukraine with them as a reminder of their trip. Theoc Quilters are welcoming new members at their next meeting, which will be held on Wednesday 11th January. Ann Blakey from the group said: “We have a very exciting programme for next year and would love to share our skills

The Third Tewkesbury (Friday) Beaver Scouts took part in a Drumming Workshop last month, thanks to donations and funds from the Wednesday and Saturday markets held in their Scout Hut. Stuart from Drum4Life came along to teach the the finer points of Samba for a lively, noisy session where all the Beaver Scouts had the opportunity to play a variety of percussion instruments. The workshop also enabled them to gain the musicians badge.

Looking grand and important, it was typical of many large hotels in the provinces - and one of several in Tewkesbury. The Royal Hop Pole was closed for several years before it was refurbished and re-opened by Wetherspoons, and the Swan stood where Store Twenty One is today.
You can only imagine what the Riverside’s interior was like - starched table cloths, cake stands and well turned-out staff, perhaps. While it operated as a hotel and inn for many years after our archive picture was taken, it ran as a night club more recently and today (above) the imposing building lies empty. Its potential is clear - and hopefully one day a developer will return it to a major landmark in the town.

THE FUTURE’S SPRITE FOR INFANT SWIMMERS A competition set up by local business owner, Fiona Munt Whittle of Twyning, has gone swimmingly well, writes Shelby Powell. Last month Fiona, whose business Aquatots offers baby swimming lessons, set a challenge for entrants to come up with an name for the character which features in the business' eye catching blue and pink logo. Fiona commented “We were surprised by the number of entrants which is really pleasing. There were so many good suggestions it made it all the more difficult choosing a winner”. The over-all winning name for the Aquatot is ‘Nixie’ which is German for ‘water sprite’. Two entrants, Claire Dewick and Liz Hoare, both came up with the name suggestion and have both been awarded a course of swimming lessons at a venue of their own choice. Claire, who is mum to Molly, three, and one year old Archie said: “When I was entering the competition it struck me that the

The Benefits of Using A Garden Designer We all enjoy challenges in our work, and garden designers are no different, writes Ernest Bratt. No matter what obstacles present in your garden, you can be confident your garden designer will be able to find a solution. From dealing with steep slopes, areas of poor drainage, or a shady corner where nothing seems to thrive, your garden designer will have the answer. Their role is to take a fresh look at an existing garden (or a totally new one) and bring together design expertise and plant knowledge. Following an on site meeting to understand the prospective client’s requirements, the designer will usually offer a range of services to include site survey, site plan, design concepts and plan, planting plan etc. Employing a garden designer has two main benefits: the first to produce design plans which can be costed and built within your budget, the second to avoid costly construction mistakes. It is so much easier and cheaper to change design features at the

‘drawing board’ stage than to realise too late when construction has commenced.

You would expect to ‘save’ the designers fee by obtaining competitive tenders on a ‘like for like’ basis. The designer might also offer a service to supervise construction by

Sometimes this requires deftly navigating through the different viewpoints on the garden project, which can arise even in the most harmonious of households. What clients are actually purchasing from a garden designer is ‘professionalism and assurance’ and, by the way, ‘a garden just as they imagined’. As the landscapers depart time is the magic ‘X’ factor as nature does her work to ‘weather in ’ the new design and soften the hard edges as plants develop. - HOW TO BURN MORE FAT WITH LESS EFFORT! We are now approaching that time of the year when we all pile on those few extra pounds due to the slightly over-consumption of food and drink over the Festive Period, writes Lee Booth. Therefore, whilst researching this month’s column, I came across some interesting recent studies that may shed a little light on helping us remain healthy and active for the forth coming years, and maybe try and keep to those well intended resolutions. The fact is that as we grow older, we lose on average 5% of our muscle mass every ten years after the age of 35. This is mainly due to the fact that in the past we needed less muscle after the age of 35 for hunting and gathering, so the body adapted to it and reduced the amount of muscle. In the present era we see drastic effects when we lose muscle: We GAIN WEIGHT. If we don't intentionally rebuild muscle through exercise, you'll need to eat 150 to 450 fewer calories every day every ten years to maintain your current weight. So if you are at a stable weight at age 35 and didn't do any kind of resist-
ance training, while still eating the same amount of food, you will GAIN WEIGHT.
Lee Booth Studies held at the *University of South Main and the *University of New South Wales have tried to help prove that Resistance Based Training (RBT) is more effective on burning calories faster and keeping those calories burning after exercising than Aerobic workouts. At the University of South Main participants burnt as many calories in 30 minutes of weight training as they did going for a 30-minute run at a
fast 6 min/mile. Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia found that in a study of forty five ‘overweight’ women who exercised for eight seconds of sprinting on an exercise bike, followed by 12 seconds of light cycling in rotation for twenty minutes lost three times as much fat as other women who exercised at a regular pace. The women lost most weight off the legs and buttocks over the fifteen weeks of the study. So to help you MAINTAIN or even some LOSE WEIGHT and keep it off, you really should be thinking about challenging yourself with an exercise regime that helps to maintain the strength in the body as well as working out smart and not long to help reduce fat. OLYMPIC TORCH TO PASS THROUGH GLOUCESTERSHRE The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games has named Gloucestershire as one of the host counties for the Olympic Torch Relay. As well as revealing the route, Cheltenham Racecourse has also been announced as the venue for an exciting free event for the public. The flame enters Gloucestershire from Swindon in the afternoon of 23rd May 2012, and heads to Cheltenham via Cirencester, Stroud, Painswick, Brockworth and Shurdington before reaching Cheltenham Racecourse that evening. On May 24th, the torch relay will leave Gloucester and heads through Maisemore, Hartpury and Staunton before moving into Herefordshire. On 1st July, the relay will come back through Chipping Campden, the site of the 400 year old event called the Cotswold Olympiks.

SHOP LOCALLY AND SUPPORT YOUR HIGH STREET You can’t have failed to notice the disruptions in the town centre over the last couple of weeks while the highways department replaces the puffin crossing, writes Victoria Gardener. The works, which are part of the Glouces-tershire County Council’s £300,000 high street safety scheme, have involved the use of temporary traffic lights. Inevitably there has been unwelcomed increases in noise, dust and traffic congestion with many of our high street retailers reporting a loss of trade. So my message to you this month is ... support your local retailers especially during these difficult trading conditions. We are very fortunate in that the town centre has an eclectic mix of unique and individual independent retailers offering unrivalled choice and customer service that you just cannot find in many of the larger high streets. By choosing to
shop locally you are supporting the local economy. There is evidence to show that for every £10 spent locally at least £25 comes back to the community.
If you spend the same amount in a multinational/chain store only £14 is generated for the local economy. These smaller high street shops create jobs for local people, many stock locally produced and ethical goods, and offer genuine choice and value. Shopping locally also means you
are doing your bit for the environment too -by keeping your journey shorter you are reducing your carbon footprint. If you haven’t visited the high street in a while, come and spend a few hours in the town centre. Take a pleasant stroll and discover some real gems from butchers and greengrocers (much fresher than the supermarket) to gift shops and clothes shops for that special occasion. SPANTASTIC SHOW Legendary folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span are back in Tewkesbury for Christmas - this year as a six-piece band. The team at Halfords Butchers attended the show and waited with anticipation, not expecting to have come away with an award on first attempt Above expectations, however, they received three bronze awards and two silver. The traditional Gloucester Old Spot pork sausage received a bronze, as did the pork and leek and Tewkesbury banger. The lamb, chilli and garlic sausage received Silver as did the home cured
bacon. All the entries were awarded a place and some technical advice was given by the judges. Halfords will be looking for gold at the next event. The advice received was implemented immediately in order to offer customers a first class product. Halfords Butchers is a family-run business in Tewkesbury High Street, which was founded by husband and wife Lee and Nicki Halford in 2007. Apart from the quality of their meat, Halfords have become well respected in the community through their support of Tewkesbury events such as the Medieval Festival and Christmas Lights. TWYNING HORSE SHOW RAISES £1500 FOR CHARITY This year’s Twyning Horse show raised £1500, which was divided between three charities. Cheques were handed over to the beneficiaries at a presentation evening held The Village Inn last month. The Midlands Air Ambulance Trust and the Crohn’s In Childhood Research Appeal each received £600, while Tewkesbury Sea Cadets were given £300. This year’s show attracted 465 competitors.

Christmas decorations – in particular ribbons and tinsel, are very attractive to pets, and if swallowed, may lead to intestinal obstructions and the need for life-saving surgery. On other matters, while we might love all the chocolate that’s around at this time of year, it’s not such good news for our dogs. Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs, especially dark chocolate. In fact it really is best to avoid sharing any the Christmas fare with your pets – the rich food and high fat content plays havoc with their digestion and can lead to painful, serious conditions such as pancreatitis. Take them for a Christmas walk instead – it might get you out of the washing up!!
Older Pets: The cold & damp weather, combined with less exercise in the winter months can exacerbate arthritis and age-related aches and pains. Consider moving older kennelled dogs in for the winter, add more blankets and thick bedding for extra comfort and warmth, try to maintain gentle regular exercise. Look out for our offers this winter. Winter Walking: If you are unable to exercise your pet as much through the winter, watch out for them gaining extra unhealthy pounds! When walking it is well worth investing in reflective/Hi - Vis collars or leads especially if you are in unlit country areas. If your cat wears a collar, swop it for a reflective version to minimise the risk of traffic accident, but do ensure it is of the quick release/safety variety. Also, keep an eye out for sore paws, as ice balling and grit/salt can really irritate them. Remember to keep any excess fur trimmed, and rinse their paws clean before drying thoroughly after walks. Boots and special cleansing wipes are available for those particularly sensitive hounds!!
Toxins: Be extremely careful with any antifreeze or de-icing products, as many contain Ethylene Glycol. Contact or ingestion can cause fatal kidney damage, so if you are at all concerned that your pet has come into contact with any toxins, ring us straight away! Outdoor pets: Rabbits and especially guinea pigs are often better in a shed or garage hutch through the worst of the winter, with regular access to an outdoor run on better days. Damp is the biggest problem – often contributing to respiratory disease. Ensure hutches and chicken coops remain dry, add plenty of extra bedding and be sure fresh water is always available despite the frost! Hutch covers are great at night and in driving rain, but remember to take them off during the day for vital ventilation. For advice on any of these topics please pop in and talk to our team today.

ANIMAL NOTES from Vale Wildlife Rescue
WINTER CASUALTIES Over the past few weeks at Vale Wildlife Hospital, we have been receiving an increasing number of calls about deer in distress, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Our native roe deer, and the fallow (introduced by the Normans) both with healthy UK populations, are now entering into the rutting season, with the males asserting their prowess over a harem of females. During this time deer will move around more than usual, moving into unfamiliar territories looking for the opposite sex. This, together with the longer nights, is why we see an increased number of deer casualties at this time of year. A lot of these will be victims of road traffic accidents, some find their way into urban gardens, get chased by dogs, get caught in fences or find themselves in towns and

Muntjac Fawn industrial estates. We also deal with a growing number of muntjac deer, the smallest of the three deer species that we see in Gloucestershire. Muntjac were introduced into the Woburn Abbey estate in the 19th century where a few of them escaped into the countryside. As they can breed all year round, their numbers quickly increased and they are now widespread throughout the south of England, up into the Midlands and there are even reports of sightings on the Scottish borders.
As with other nonnative species we deal with such as grey squirrels and Canada geese, we are required by law to hold a licence to take in, treat and release muntjac deer. Unfortunately, injured deer do not do well in captivity and the success rate of deer casualties in wildlife hospitals is fairly low, due not only to the serious injuries often sustained, but also to a condition known as capture myopathy brought on by the stress of the trauma and from being in a captive environment in close proximity to people. ON COURSE FOR FIRST AID Richard Chatham of Sherdons Golf Centre has teamed up with local first aid trainer Mena Canning to offer first aid training at the golf course, writes Shelby Powell. The first one day course, Emergency First Aid, will be held on Friday 2nd December. How important is the right oil for your car? The simple answer is ‘It’s vitally important for the long life of your engine’, writes Anthony Stockman. I mention this only because not long ago we had a customer in for a service on his not very old Vectra and he brought with him – a can of ‘good old mineral 20/50 oil’, which he wanted us to use for his oil change. I explained that the oil wasn’t suitable, because it didn’t match, or come anywhere near the engine manufacturer’s specification, but he wasn’t going to be persuaded, which is very bad news for his engine – I’ll explain: Until fifty years ago, engine oils were ‘monograde’ – 20, 30, 40 and so on. You ran a 40 or 50 grade in the summer and when winter came, you drained it all out and filled your car up with a 20 grade. Engine technology was simple in those days, people didn’t travel many miles by car and engine rebuilds at 30,000 miles were par for the course. But oil companies were beginning to realise that with the discovery of ‘polymer additives’, it could be possible to produce and oil which had a viscosity of a winter grade when cold, but a summer viscosity when hot, obviating the need to change from a summer to winter oil and vice-versa. And so, by the mid ‘60s, along came the ubiquitous Duckhams 20w/50. (w stands for winter by the way, not ‘weight’). The stuff was a
revelation and was being poured into every engine, from Morris Minors to EType Jags. It also had a very desirable side effect: it reduced oil consumption and engines lasted longer. Great! Except that technology, like everything else, has moved on – considerably! Fifty years ago, a 1 litre Ford Anglia engine produced about 38 bhp, oil changes were every 4 – 6000miles and the car would run for 40,000 miles at about 30 mpg before it started to get tired. Now our engines are producing almost twice the power, twice the mpg, oil changes are now 10 20,000 miles and we’d be really upset if it didn’t get to 80,000 miles without
Anthony Stockman complaining! So what’s changed? Well basically, we’re all benefiting from race technology. Everything from Turbocharged, ECU controlled multi-valve ohc, fuel injected engines to 5/6 speed gearboxes, disc brakes, clever suspension and a host of other driver aids have come directly from motor racing. But what’s more important – so has the oil! What we’re all driving around in today would have been considered ‘state of the art’, highly tuned sports cars 50 years ago, but this is now simply ‘normal’ motoring. And this ‘normality’ is kept there by some very clever oil technology. In order to produce the power and economy

we’ve all come to expect, engine volumetric efficiency has had to be improved 100% from where it was and as a consequence, the running tolerances are extremely tight, compressions are much higher, engine operating temperatures have risen dramatically and sophisticated oils have had to be developed to cope with this new challenge. To prevent damage, additives called ‘esters’ are used to maintain the oil film at rest, because they’re ‘polar’ and stick to metal surfaces and ‘poly-alpha-olefins’ (PAO’s) which maintain phenomenally high rates of shear, unheard of years ago, which prevent metal to metal contact, even under extreme conditions. And that ladies and gentlemen is what produces the magic from under the bonnet. Old style mineral oils don’t cut it – they just can’t cope. So don’t be tempted to skimp on oil; use what the manufacturer states. It may seem expensive, but it’s a lot cheaper than a new engine! Anthony Stockman

BREDON BRIDgE REPAIRS WELL UNDER WAY Work has begun to repair the structure which supports the M5 as it passes over the B4080 Tewkesbury to Bredon Road. The under bridge which supports the motorway was built in 1969 and needs maintenance due to concrete deterioration to ensure it remains in good condition . The Highways Agency started work on this bridge in September 2011 and it is expected it to last thirty weeks. Work is to repair spalled concrete and steel work damaged by water ingress over the bridge’s 42 year life. The damage pictured here is repaired by a high pressure hydroblasting process which erodes unstable concrete and rust. This enables reinforced steelwork to be repaired and a new concrete facing to be cast. A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “We would like to thank local residents and drivers for their patience at the traffic lights. We installed a central traffic flow system so that both sides of the bridge could be worked on at the same time, halving the disruption time.” The works are scheduled to be completed by late April 2012. The majority of the work is being carried out between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 3pm Sundays in order to minimise the disturbance to people living nearby.

It replaced the town’s cinema, the Sabrina, which was built in the 1930s to let local people enjoy the talking picture boom. It was also beloved of courting couples especially during the war with its café and double seats at the rear! It boasted also rather a nice neo-classical façade which might have prevented its demotion had it occurred a little later. The cinema itself required some quite handsome buildings to be demolished Acton’s bakery pictured here c1900 with deliveries from that wonderful Healings team lorry. Tewkesbury Cricket Club held its end of season awards event recently, after a successful season in which the First xI finished third in the gloucestershire Division of the West of England Premier League. First team player of the year was Simon Vincent, the first team bowling award went to Tom Brown and the batting award to John Allcoat.
