Tewkesbury salutes Armed Forces Day Armed Forces Day in Tewkesbury was marked with a parade through the town centre plus live music at the British Legion Club’s base in Church Street ending with a well-supported fundraising variety show at The Roses Theatre in the evening, writes Shelby Powell. This is the second year branch members have organised the highly successful “We Salute You” show which brings together local performers to commemorate the bravery of our servicemen and women past and present to fundraise for the Poppy Appeal. Over 220 tickets were snapped up by eager residents who were entertained by the Marches’ Military Wives Choir with their perfect pitches harmonies. The school choir from Queen Margaret School opened the show which was followed by a rib tickling comedy sketch from the Twyning Players. Members of this local

amateur dramatic group had the audience rolling in the aisles with their version of the 80’s TV series ‘Allo ‘Allo, The show culminated in a flag waving war time sing-along led by Anne Martin with favourite songs from the era including “Wish Me Luck (as you wave me good bye)”. The annual rally of the Model Steam Road Vehicle Society took place in Tewkesbury last month - and crowds turned out in force to see some amazingly detailed miniature steam engines in action. Working model road engines were fired up at Tewkesbury Rugby Club to delight the public and enthusiasts alike. There were also fullscale traction engine rides, a ride-on miniature railway, stalls and sideshows as well as a Birds of Prey display. Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers have supported a major initiative to paint an iron footbridge in their home town, writes Shelby Powell. The footbridge is located at Back of Avon and is a popular access route used by residents and visitors leading to The Ham. Many Tewkesbury Direct readers will know this is an ancient water meadow covering approximately 175 acres which is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest supporting a bio-diversity of flora and fauna.

Birds spotted nesting in the area include the corn bunting and red kite, while lady’s smock and meadow buttercup abound. The renovation of the bridge was estimated by the County Council to cost in the region of £100,000 if undertaken by external contractors as it would involve scaffolding across the river to reach all parts of the bridge.

Neither the County Council nor Tewkesbury Town Council could afford this sum but the bridge was looking very sad, bare in parts and in others sporting thick layers of lichen and moss, testifying to a healthy air quality but not aesthetically pleasing. Town Councillor, Karen Brennan found out roughly how much the paint and materials would cost for the project if undertaken by volunteers and then asked the two Councils to split the cost and for permission for volunteers to paint the upper parts. The under-side, which is seen by boaters, is not in such bad shape as it is not exposed to the elements. As the bridge is

adorned with flowers during the summer there was no time to lose as, by this time, summer was rapidly approaching. Involving most volunteer forces would mean form-filling and committee permission all of which would take time that was not available. Then Tewkesbury in Bloom came to the rescue. Although this area is not on their judging route and they are the only finalists in Gloucestershire for the Britain in Bloom National Award this year, they have given up their Sundays and evenings to work with Town Councillors and other local residents to paint all areas of the bridge (apart from the inaccessible underside). This has been done with minimal disruption to bridge users. It is hoped that the final figure for completing the project will come in at around £500.

FESTIVAL GOES BACK TO ITS ROOTS Tewkesbury’s ever popular Food Festival returned to its traditional home of the Abbey Grounds last month - and thousands were drawn from all over the region to sample its culinary delights. All the original attractions were there including a food and drink marquee comprising over 60 stalls. Each offered a range of local produce from award-winning cheeses, locally reared meat, homemade cakes and pastries, to local wine, beer and cider. The festival featured a cookery theatre with live demonstrations

Twixtbears Housing Estate does offer some interesting town house accommodation, near - but not too near - the River Avon, writes John Dixon. It also reveals some wit, with its name reminding us that it lies between the Black and White Bear Public Houses. The earliest reference to its name I have found was when its occupant, Capt. C. W. Hewett died in 1942. Historically it possessed the much more prosaic name of Lilley Croft with its many spellings. The housing estate was built over Lilley Craft House and its grounds. Photographs are rare of the house which probably dates from 1888 and the little we have was researched by the late Roger Carver. The view of the back, from the river, was perhaps more attractive? It had lost its common land status by 1825, when it had been converted into a Bleaching Yard by a George Watson, migrant from Nottinghamshire. He used his wealth for philanthropic purposes, a habit continued by his daughters and only son George who donated the Watson Hall for the benefit of the town in perpetuity. After the demise of the Watson dynasty the “new houses” and grounds were bought in 1909 by corn merchant N. B. Stephens. He did not live long - but his sons Dick and Ted found some fame in featuring in ‘Portrait of Elmbury’ that was written by their childhood friend, John Moore. Ted, however, apparently returned to live at his family home in 1965 - just before it was demolished to make way for modernity.

PROTECTING WILDLIFE FROM DOMESTIC PETS The majority of the 4,000 wildlife casualties that we deal with at Vale Wildlife Hospital every year, come in throughout the main breeding season from April through to August, writes Caroline Gould. A large proportion of these are babies or juveniles, particularly birds, and the reason that most of them get brought in is the domestic cat. Every year we highlight the facts and figures of cat predation in the UK, not because we don’t like cats (we are all animal lovers, whatever

A REAL BOY RACER Lucky local schoolboy, James Wallis, has entered the world of motor racing at the young age of eight. James, who is now nine, joined the world of Jascar racing, a junior version of the American Nascar Racing sport. All races are round an oval circuit and all the cars are half sized replicas of the larger racing cars. James’ car can reach speeds of 70mph and is powered by a Honda 390 engine, equipped with a roll cage and entry into the vehicle is via the roof. James’ car has been sprayed up in his blue

and yellow racing colours by local bodyshop RT Bodysure and specially made decals have been supplied by local signmakers Signlink. James is truely excited by motor racing and has achieved a third place finish at an event at the Birmingham Circuit earlier this year. The developers, based in Boddington, read about the club’s fundraising for new changing rooms and decided to help out. This is not the book I had planned to review this month, but I read it only recently and wish to share this inspired novel which was a pleasure from the first page until it closed, some 250 later. The typeface also deserves a mention for its clarity! The narrator, a recently divorced author, is on a flight out to Athens; her neighbour on the aeroplane, an older man with an ugly proboscis. Their flight passes with the neighbour recounting many experiences from his life, loves, marriages and divorces, with the occasional intercession by the narrator about her own estrangement, her family, her writing and why she is going to Athens. On landing, they part with an exchange of mobile numbers, which during her brief visit to the Greek capital provides two more encounters combining boating and swimming which gives us more stories and scenic descriptions. The purpose of the narrators trip is to teach at an English language course and she recounts two

classes she teaches introducing a mixture of students, who have to recount in outline an experience on their way to college and later provide a story. So once again an overview of a collection of assorted lives. The final strands of stories come from the narrator's social engagements with colleagues, acquaintances and meetings. Some expanded and some not. All these encounters provide us the lucky reader with an outline of people's lives and experiences. GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY Weather it’s the summer heat or the crowds that you are trying to avoid, Tiddesley Wood near Pershore is a great destination for a stroll in the cool of the evening, or early morning. Now managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, it’s an enchanting nature reserve which is rich in both flora and fauna.

Tiddesley covers around 200 acres and is believed to date back some 6,000 years. Our walk takes us through the heart of the woodland, although you can wander along many waymarked paths here as long as you pay heed to the flags and notices warning you when you are near to the gun firing range! Plans are displayed and the woods’ entrances and are also available on the trust’s website. Please note dogs should be on leads throughout the reserve. Park in the Trust’s car park on the Besford Bridge Road, about half a mile west of Pershore. Leave the car park and join the track (1) which leads to the woods (see photo left). As you enter the wood, keep straight ahead on the main broad track, ignoring the turnings to the left. Forestry work is ongoing here, and the trust is also gradually

replacing the conifers which were planted by the Forestry Commission when Tiddesley was used for commercial purposes. Carry on along the path, which rises slightly and eventually meets a bridleway (2). Turn right and follow the bridleway as it curves upwards, until it bears right and descends to the end of the wood. (3). Leave the bridleway at this point and walk straight ahead along the track. At the next path turn left (4) and keep climbing upwards until you reach cross tracks (5). Bear left here - and at the next junction bear right (6) down a path which can at times be slippery. At the bottom of the decent you will meet the bridleway again. by a wooden gate (7). Bear left and take the path into the woods here, and follow it until you meet the main track once more (8). Turn right to return to the car park.

Flowers for hours of fun Local lady Jackie Dean has just started up a business in her home town of Tewkesbury, running flower arranging workshops and birthday parties for children. Her new venture, Flowers of Fun, will be running open workshops during the summer holidays where children aged 5-14 can come along and have some fun with flowers, plants and crafts - plus they will take home their very own special creations. “Sessions will be up to two hours with breaks and held at our own workshop in Tewkesbury, said Jackie. “The price is £15 per child which includes all materials and flowers plus a free muffin and a drink. There will be a maximum of 8 children per session.” Flowers of Fun also organise birthday parties from age five upwards. “ This is where we let your children be little florists for the day, Jackie added. “Each child will take away their own decorated vase and floral creation as well lots of smiles.” A recent party is pictured above. Midlands Air Ambulance will use Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival as its base for the day, responding to calls and returning as needed! Also expected is Barry “Whizzo” Williams the famous race and rally driver who will be recounting his experiences with some of the cars he used to compete in. There will be 400 exhibit cars and 150 bikes with a high proportion of vintage cars and up to 10 veterans. Last year included Jensen Healey, De Lorean, Petersen Bentley, Phantom Rolls Royce, Ulster Aston Martin, Bugattis, an original ex Le Mans MGA and many more. 100 vendors will be selling anything from gaskets to gooseberry jam, including autojumble, tools, gifts etc. There will be tea and cakes and more, there’ll be a licensed bar and a BBQ and other refreshment. The Haywood Sisters will be providing live period music.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE WORKING FOR A SAFER TEWKESBURY Hello, my name is Mark Astle and I am your Local Risk Manager for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue within Tewkesbury borough. My top priority is to work towards a safer Tewkesbury through prevention, protection and education. Starting with my top tips to say safe from fire: • Ensure you have a working smoke alarm installed on all levels of your home. Test your alarms weekly and never remove batteries for other devices. • Never leave cooking unattended and avoid cooking after drinking alcohol. The majority of fires start in the kitchen. Always turn off kitchen appliances when you have finished cooking. • Never leave candles unattended, tea lights in particular as they can become extremely hot. • Don’t overload sockets – only one plug per socket. Always turn off plugs when they are not in use, except those that are designed to be left on, like freezers. • Make sure cigarettes are extinguished properly and never smoke in bed. • Check on older rela-

tives and neighbours to ensure their safety. If you are going to light your fire, make sure you have the chimney swept. Plan an escape route and ensure everyone knows it. Close doors at night to stop fires from spreading. And always in the

Local 4x4 enthusiasts Graham Daly and Dan Williams are always building new off road vehicles to trial in some of the most taxing environments. Most of the vehicles are bought and sold on the internet, and the couple have taken delivery of a 1956 Green Goddess fire engine after swapping it with a 1987 Land Rover high cap. The ex Army fire engine came all the way from Scotland on a low loader and the pair are

deciding what to use it for. Passers by have asked whether it could be displayed at various public events which Graham is considering. The Green Goddess is four wheel drive but it will not be used for off riding.

SEVERN UNIT MVS OFFSHORE TRAINING CRUISE In early June nine members of the Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service set sail in three boats including their own training boat MVS Minerva for their Annual Offshore Training Cruise to Cardiff, Bristol and Portishead. Head of Unit Nice Price said “The entire trip went extremely well despite encountering rough seas at times and it gave the unit valuable experience in handling boats in tidal conditions.

MITTON MANOR LEAVERS CONCERT The Mitton Manor Pre-School Leavers’ Concert took place on Friday 10th July at the Watson Hall in Tewkesbury. The concert involved thirty pre-school children who are moving on to primary school in September. The theme of the show was “A Night at the Musicals”, and included songs from Mary Poppins, Annie, Oliver and the Wizard of Oz. Following the horrendous weather last year we have everything crossed hoping that it will be a glorious sunny day. There will be lots of traditional village fete stalls, including plate smash, books, cakes, coconut shy, skittles and dung drop. We also have our raffle, with lots of great prizes being donated by local businesses, a bouncy slide, tombola and much, much more. Food-wise there will be a fantastic barbecue, teas and cakes and the ice cream van. Licensed bar also available. We will have entertainment in the main arena with our ever popular Tug of War and Egg Throwing competitions. There will also be dance displays from Bredon School of Dance and traditional children's races. In the Marquee, along with the refreshments, we shall have our competitions on display with many new categories this year and local singing group “Choir Factor” will be providing entertainment. WORK ON ROSES THEATRE UNDERWAY The enthusiasm is palpable at The Roses Theatre as years of fundraising and planning for the renovations have finally come to fruition; in a matter of a couple of months, Tewkesbury will have a brand new arts centre, standing tall and proud on Sun Street. Building work began at the beginning of July – a week earlier than expected – and after the initial hustle and bustle of staff clearing out all of their possessions, dismantling desks, and setting themselves up backstage in the dressing rooms, the contractors got to work and have made staggering progress so far. Staff are currently enjoying being in close proximity in their make shift offices as the excitement from the daily progress photos is contagious and it has finally dawned that these improvements are really happening. Visitors can look forward to an array of improvements including a wow factor atrium, a light and airy coffee bar,

a brand new kitchen serving locally sourced food throughout the day, a brand new lift, and increased comfort as the heating system improves and the toilets are completely overhauled. Areas of the theatre that used to be very familiar are now completely unrecognisable as walls are knocked down and new ones are built, equipment and tools are everywhere, and smaller areas of the building are beginning to feel more spacious. Thanks to many generous contributions, the theatre are exceedingly close to their £820,000 target and they feel that it is almost certain they can surpass it and begin to turn the second phase of the redevelopment

into a reality. The continued support has been a constant affirmation that the plans to modernise the building will massively improve the customer experience and turn the building into something the community can be even more proud to call their own. There is now an opportunity to leave a special, personalised mark on the new building thanks to The Buy A Brick Appeal. For a £75 donation, a brass plaque will be engraved with a message chosen by the contributor, whether it is their own name, recognition of their business, a friend, or a family member. The new build-

ing was only made possible because of dedicated contributors in the community who care about its success as much as the staff and volunteers, so it is only fitting that these plaques are mounted onto the bricks that make up the foundation of the renovated arts centre. The works will run into September, with The Roses reopening its doors on Thursday 24 September with The Manfreds. Over the summer, The Roses will be offering a programme of events at The Watson Hall and Victoria Gardens – see advert on page 16 for full details.

A few gentle reminders We have unfortunately suffered two burglaries where as well as property being taken from the home the thieves also stole three cars, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. This worrying trend could have been averted by some basic security measures. In one case the premises was entered by an unlocked rear door and in the second the point of entry was an open ground floor window. Thankfully two of the cars were found abandoned within hours. I suggested in this column very recently that leaving vehicle keys where they can be easily accessed in the hall or kitchen table gives burglars an easy method of escape after helping themselves to items from your home. I know during periods of good weather it is necessary to open windows but please check the ground floor of your home before retiring to bed. This list should help: 䡵 Make sure all doors are locked. 䡵 Check all ground floor windows are closed, better still lock them if possible.

䡵 Take door and vehicle keys upstairs when going to bed. 䡵 Leave a lamp or radio on a time switch to give the impression someone is still awake downstairs. A station with a phone-in is the best choice.

I will finish off with a couple of reminders , firstly during this spell of fine weather please do not leave dogs unattended in your vehicle even for a short period of time and always remember to take a bottle of water and a bowl when going on a long journey. What’s most important to you? I suppose we all have different ideas as to what is important in our lives and what is not, writes local clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor David Slater. People may challenge our choices and decisions. What do YOU put as most important? Perhaps the following tale can help you sort out your ideas. I have seen this story in many different publications but its original author is unknown so cannot be acknowledged. A shame. It is so simple yet so true! A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up

the remaining open areas of the jar. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.” “Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he

continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. GOING VINTAGE ON THE PARK Tewkesbury’s award winning Vintage Fair is set to return on Saturday 12th September. As well as the regular attractions, a new venue reached via vintage bus plus a classic car show will be new features. Organisers of ‘Vintage on the Park’, Shelby Powell and Karen Brennan say “We wish to thank all of the local businesses who are supporting our newest venture which is in aid of charity. “With our new partners and sponsors working with us we can offer these new attractions. “We hope to keep Tewkesbury firmly on the map for first-rate vintage events and encourage visitors to discover our vintage, and second hand antique shops.” Tewkesbury Park Hotel are opening up their stunning grounds and hotel to host the vintage attractions in September while solicitors practice, Thomson & Bancks are the event’s main sponsors. Stephanie Jepson and the Courtney World travel team are supporting the free vintage shuttle bus service which will operate a 20 minute circular service between the town centre and the venue. The vintage ‘bus stop’ will be based at The Crescent (next to The Abbey) and will operate between 11am and 4.30 pm picking up vintage fans along the way. BUILDERS JOIN THE BIG WEED A team of workers from Willmott Dixon (above) - the contractors building the town's new swimming pool and leisure facilities - joined Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers and members of the public to sweep, weed and tidy up the town centre ahead of the Britain in Bloom regional judging day. Willmott Dixon have supported the town's efforts over the last couple of months by providing new town signage, supplying equipment and tools as well as offering manpower for the Big Community Weeding session which has been organised by Paul Rice the company's senior building manager. Around 30 individuals spent two hours at various grot spots in the town including sweeping at The Crescent, cleaning road signage near to Morrisons, weeding at the entrance of Nelson Street as well as the immediate town centre.
