Nearly a year after building work began, Tewkesbury’s stylish new Porsche Centre has opened for business next to Junction 9 of the M5. The site boasts a massive showroom filled with new and used examples of the famous Stuttgart marque. Centre Principal Leon Vitti told us that the new flagship business currently employs 22 people - a number that may increase in time. Tewkesbury’s Porsche centre is part of the continuing development plans of the Dick Lovett group, which has been in business for nearly fifty years. Leon said “We are delighted to have chosen Tewkesbury for our new base, and we invite everyone to drop by and see us and our spectacular range of cars.”

New Rotary chairman looks forward to classic vehicle day Tewkesbury Rotary Club welcomed Gareth Hill as president of the club in July, succeeding Roy Evans. The first main event in Gareth’s year in office will be the Classic Vehicle Festival on Sunday 17th August at Tewkesbury School. This is the club’s main fund raising event during the year and has always been very popular and successful and 2014 will be no exception with over 400 classic vehicles expected. Tewkesbury Rotary Club support many local initiatives and recent events have provided funds for both Foodbank and SARA. The club works closely with schools and encourages young students to take part in various competitions covering music, photography, cooking plus also a Young Leaders development course that is held in the Forest of Dean each year. The club has also supported a student from Tewkesbury School who has attended a Rotary world conference in Chicago.

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK Have you noticed how well kept and tidy Tewkesbury town centre is looking this summer? writes Shelby Powell. This is all down to a small army of volunteers from Tewkesbury in Bloom who arm themselves with garden tools, brushes and garden sacks to tackle weed hot spots. These volunteers were joined by a number of town councillors at a community weeding morning last month. The Crescent was brushed and cleaned for visitors, tidying up took place in St Mary's Lane and tall weeds growing along the raised footpath in Swilgate Road were cleared for easier access.

CORONATION FANCY DRESS Reader Derek Round has sent us this interesting photograph from his archive of old Tewkesbury photographs. The photo, taken in 1953 at Ashchurch Army Camp sports field, is of children participating in a fancy dress competition. The theme represents the Queen’s Coronation, celebrated in 1953. “Some of the participants of the fancy dress are residents of Northway Estate, Tewkesbury, Derek told us. “The girl in the far left of the photo dressed as Miss Woodbine (with cigarette packets), is Marion Tandy. “To her left (I know the girls face but can’t remember her name.) I believe she was dressed as a bridegroom.” The girl in the middle of the photo, Betty Tandy, is dressed as a bride. On her left is Derek Round who went as Monica (complete with gym slip and plaits) Monica, with the catch-phrase, "jolly hockey-sticks" was a naughty school girl, a character portrayed by Beryl Reid who was a comedienne and actress. Her first big success came in the BBC radio show educating Archie, which was later made into a TV series. Later she became Marlene affectionately known as Brummie whose catch phrase was "Evening each, moy noyme's Mar-leen". In 1954 Beryl Reid also starred as Miss Wilson in The Belles of St Trinian’s. The front of the photo on the left is Jennifer Round; on the right is the late Jane Round - both sisters of Derek. Their mother made the dresses from red, white and blue crepe paper.

The replica ‘Time And Relative Dimension In Space’ machine is the latest acquisition of landlord Darren Matthews, who is an avid collector of TV and film memorabilia. “I had a replica Dr Who scarf knitted after a random comment in the pub one night, Darren told us. “This led to me searching the net for the rest of the fourth doctor’s costume. “I finished the outfit and people started talking about the Tardis, so I spoke to one of my regular customers, Clive Ball, who is a local carpenter. “One thing led to another and last month the Tardis landed at the

bottom of the garden. “In reality it is a folly for me, but the buzz it has created is incredible. “It’s only a stylized replica, but everyone knows what it is. “Customers regularly ask if the can use it to travel back a few years for some cheap beer. “I have also had a number of new customers and families popping in to see my blue shed!” The White Bear is one of Tewkesbury’s last old -style freehouses, and Darren feels his Tardis fits in well with the pub’s retro feel. DRAMA SOCIETY TO STAGE QUARTET AT THE ROSES Tewkesbury Arts & Drama Society, which has been running for over thirty years, is staging Ronald Harwood’s play Quartet at The Roses Theatre next month. Ronald Harwood is wellknown for his play The Dresser and his screenplays for The Pianist and The Diving Bell And The Butterfly. In Quartet, which he adapted for a film in 2012, he produces laugh-out-loud comedy mixed with insightful, poignant moments. It is centred around a quarter who were once world-famous opera singers, but now they are in a home for retired musicians. The arrival of one member’s wife means that perhaps they can perform their renowned quartet once more for the annual concert. But

will they be able to sing together? Will they be able to sing at all? This performance by an award-winning cast and director from Tewkesbury Arts And Drama Society will appeal to anyone who is growing older - or who will grow older one day! There will be two performances, on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September. TOWNSFOLK RALLY ROUND TO HELP FOODBANK A two day food collection at Tewkesbury’s Tesco store in Bishops Walk last month has re-stocked the Foodbank’s shelves ready to help those in food crisis. Generous locals contributed 691.10 kg of food and £59 during the weekend collection which is a 25% increase in donated food on last year’s total. Foodbank volunteers were joined by staff from the Halifax Bank in Tewkesbury as well as military personnel from Innsworth ARRC base who helped hand out shopping lists, and pack the donated food into collection crates ready for transportation to the Foodbank store where it is sorted and weighed. Meanwhile Twyning Scouts held their own Foodbank collection raising £69 and netting 20 kg of non-perishable food supplies. “Experience has shown us school holidays can put financial strain on families, so we are really pleased to have been able to build up our stocks in case of increased demand”, commented volunteer co-ordinator Gordon Sanford. Around 60 adults and children are issued with a three day supply of emergency food each month by Tewkesbury Foodbank.

FONTS, FETES AND FUNDRAISING! The parish church of St Nicholas, Kemerton, has served the village community for almost 1,000 years. As with many such ancient churches, the building was heavily restored in the Victorian era and work has recently been completed to make the church even more attractive for today's congregations and visitors of all kinds, from wedding guests to tourists. In a ÂŁ20,000 project, specialist craftsmen have created a new meeting area, with a built-in disabled-friendly toilet, new seating area, noticeboards and carpeting. A special feature of this work was the recycling of redundant pews to make all the visible woodwork, giving a feeling that the area has existed for many years. Another key, but challenging part of the project, involved moving the heavy stone font away from the meeting area to a new position in the body of the church. The move has resulted in more space around the font, making it easier to use and appreciate, and emphasising its central role in the Christian faith. All of this work has involved a massive

amount of fundraising by the people of Kemerton who, in the true spirit of community enterprise, often link with other village organisations to arrange events and share the proceeds. Kemerton village fete, to be held on Saturday 30th August 12.30 â€“ 5.30pm, is a joint effort by The Friends of St Nicholas Church and Kemerton Village Hall. Why not go along and enjoy all the fun of a traditional village fete featuring Tewkesbury Town Band, a pig roast, bar, tea tent, bouncy castle, games and a whole host of interesting stalls.

TEWKESBURY IN BLOOM JUDGING DAY July 9th was the big day when two judges from the Heart of England Bloom visited our town. We had been blessed this year with a lot of volunteer and local authority help which meant Tewkesbury looked especially inviting. Our tour started at the allotments, Jeff Morgan showed us around which was, as one would expect, incredibly impressive. The primary schools had planted wheelbarrows and some children from Tirlebrook School where there to talk about their horticultural display on the theme of the Great War. I think the judges were impressed as they should have been! We then moved on to Marina Court where we had an opportunity to view their spectacular gardens. Then on to see the lovely beds created by North Tewkesbury residents, followed by a walk down the High Street via to Town Hall and on to the cross through the Abbey ending in Victoria Gardens. Finally our lovely driver Jo, Pete and Chris

Junior Cricket reaches new peak Tewkesbury Cricket Club has reached its highest ever level of junior members with 110 young players joining the club this season. "The momentum has built over the last few years" said Junior Cricket Coordinator Gwyn Williams. "We are lucky to have the support of a number of players and ex-players who help out in coaching the youngsters and running teams" Gwyn added. Five of the club's Under 10 players (pictured below) were selected to represent the District in a tournament at King's School Gloucester at the end of July.

The market will take place in Tewkesbury High Street from 9am to 5pm with lots of mouthwatering treats on offer to try and buy. Organised by Cotswolds Market Ltd in partnership with both the Tewkesbury Town Team and Tewkesbury Borough Council, the event will feature produce from award-winning cheese, beer and cider makers, bakers and farmers. 3rd Tewkesbury Rainbows have been taking part in The Big Brownie Birthday celebrations over the past seven months. Each age group in Guiding have been able to complete a special badge to mark the centenary of Brownies. For the girls to gain this badge they have had to complete nine challenges/tasks. The girls and their Leaders chose many tasks varying from taking part in a ‘join Thinking Day’ event with 1st Ashchurch Brownies and Guides; to going on a Penny Hike. They also learnt about Rainbows in Mexico, they are called Girasoles (Sunflowers) and making Chinese Dragon Puppets. The girls decided that to finish the badge they wanted to go swimming

at the end of term, to mark the completion of ‘The Big Brownie Birthday Challenge’ badge. Tewkesbury Park Hotel, Golf and Country Park kindly offered the free use of the swimming pool to help the girls achieve the

MAKE BELIEVE ART Stella Ashmeade is a teacher and artist living in Tewkesbury who runs an established mural and canvas painting business called Make Believe Stuff. Her connections with Tewkesbury go back a long way as she began her teaching career here. This, she says was the perfect grounding for much of the work she has done with children. However, Stella has begun to turn her attention to adult’s crafting needs! She told us. “ I found that the fabulous light and airy space in my conservatory lent itself perfectly to art and craft workshops and I was getting more and more comments from adults about needing time for their creative ideas or just wanting a new experience. So I am thrilled to be offering craft workshops that combine technique with fun and total escapism. I feel passionately that art and crafting is for everyone” says Stella “and that the benefits that we perceive for kids run true for adults as well. We all lead busy overfull lives, and craft time can be relaxing: a mind detox if you like” Stella is offering the following dates for workshops where all abilities are welcome. ‘Last in the office wins’ culture needs changing claims legal expert A culture of long hours and weary workforces, needs addressing to make the UK’s work places more productive, claims one of the region’s leading employment lawyers. Daljit Bhogal of DF Legal said a new survey showing nearly half of managers’ work at least an extra day of unpaid overtime each week shows an unhealthy attitude in the workplace to hours. The survey issued by the Institute for Leadership and management came only days after Britain’s workforce were given the right to ask for flexible working hours, rather than just parents and carers.

“There is a last in the office wins culture glorifying long hours where those at their desk longest get the plaudits, yet in the UK we are consistently shown to be less productive than many of our European counterparts,” said Mr Bhogal. “The recent flexible working hours changes has been highlighted in broadsheets as a positive move, but in all likelihood it will change things little as the needs

of the employer is what will dictate this,” said Mr Bhogal, whose firm have offices in Tewkesbury, Stroud, Cheltenham and Ledbury. “Whilst the flexible hours change is of interest, more needs to be done to promote moves where employees can be highly productive and motivated rather than being burnt out and having their home lives suffer,” he added. The survey of 1,056 Institute of Leadership

and Management members found that 76% said they work late in the office or at home, 48% work through their lunch break, and more than a third find themselves working at weekends. “Healthy, focussed and motivated employ-

ees leads to less disputes and more productivity and surveys like this one demonstrates that in 2014 here in the UK we still have work to do to address the yearning for more of a work life balance,” he added.

Tewkesbury Royal British Legion branch are inviting members of the public to join them on of the evening of Monday 4th August to commemorate the centenary of WW1 in a national initiative. 'Lights Out' is a UK wide invitation to everyone to turn off their lights from 10 to 11 pm, leaving just a single light or candle for this shared moment of reflection. At 11 pm on 4 August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany, ushering in some of the darkest periods in our history and as the moment approached the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey made the famous remark "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life time". The club in Church Street will be open from 8 until 10 pm. The event is being held in conjunction with the Candle Light Vigil at Tewkesbury Abbey, and all are welcome in the club prior to the event. "The lights will be turned off in the club from 9 pm and it will be lit solely by candlelight, this will be in conjunction with the candlelight vigil being held in Tewkesbury Abbey from 10 pm. Non members are welcome to us at the club from 8 pm to enjoy a drink by candlelight before moving on to the Abbey for the candlelit vigil", says club secretary, Peter Godwin.

POP BOTTLE GREENHOUSE BUILT BY 1ST ASHCHURCH BROWNIES Over the past year 1st Ashchurch Brownies have been working with the staff and residents of Ashchurch View Care Home. The girls have put on Christmas shows for the residents and have helped with the gardening of the grounds. Ashchurch View Care Home asked the Brownies to help them with another project – to build a Pop Bottle greenhouse for the residents to use. The Care Home came up with the idea, instructions and wood, screws etc. The Brownies collected 2 Litre pop bottles for nearly a year and former Guider, Brenda Price kindly agreed to store all of the pop bottles, totalling 1,500. During the first day of the build, Brownies cleaned,

removed the labels and cut the bottles ready to be assembled, they then helped with the rest of the build. Brown Owl, Sue Haines said ‘It was great for the girls to get involved with the local community, and build the greenhouse for the residents to enjoy’. If you would like to volunteer and join in with the fun, Tewkesbury Division Girl Guides are currently looking for more leaders for all Guiding sections, in Tewkesbury,

TEWKESBURY STALLHOLDER CROWNED AS THE VERY BEST IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE A stall holder at Tewkesbury's monthly farmers' market has been announced as Gloucestershire's very best in the Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards. Severn Cider's stall at the Tewkesbury Farmers' Market was presented with the Best Farmers' Market Stallholder award at the annual award event, which took place on 7 July. More than 500 guests gathered to celebrate the winners from 18 different categories, which ranged from best independent retailer and drink product of the year to best farmers' market stall holder and restaurant of the year. SIGN UNVEILING Late in 2012 Network Rail approached the Ashchurch, Tewkesbury & District Rail Promotion Group with an offer of access to the land between the northbound platform at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station and the adjacent children's nursery, with a view to converting this to a community garden. Over the ensuing 18 months a small band of volunteers have worked on clearing the site of brambles, some buddlejas, countless weeds and many bags of stones and ballast. Initially on an ad hoc basis, regular monthly work parties were introduced early in 2013. To celebrate the progress of covering around 70 metres of the land with light suppressing matting, in, preparation for the next stage of development, the group have erected a sign at the station announcing the project and its details. This was erected on

24 July, witnessed by representatives of sponsors Network Rail, ACoRP, SevernVale Housing and NARHA, together with volunteers and other supporters.

It was a bumper crop for strawberries this year and we had plenty to share at the Edible Garden. We hosted a Strawberry Afternoon Tea on 17th of June. About 30 adults and 15 children enjoyed pick your own strawberries, jam making demo and homemade scones. Earlier this spring we added a poly tunnel to the Edible Garden to increase our growing season and to ensure a good crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and melons. Jo has been in charge of the watering, weeding and upkeep. The results of her patience and care

are really starting to show. The first couple of cucumbers and cherry tomatoes have been enjoyed and there are many more to come. We are well on our way to creating new allotment plots for local residents. The land has been cleared and soon we will divide the space up into plots. TEWKESBURY SNATCH E-SURV SURVEYORS CHALLENGE CUP Tewkesbury CC were the winners of the e.surv Surveyors Challenge Cup for 2014 - the premier Twenty 20 competition in the Cheltenham and Gloucester area. The final between Tewkesbury and Gloucester City Winget (GCW) was played over two nights at Cheltenham Cricket Club on 15/16 July. After the first evening’s play Tewkesbury were facing a huge deficit of 52 runs, with GCW’s lead being largely due to a destructive knock of 103 not out from Will Steadman. On the second evening GCW batted first

and scored a respectable 150 runs, leaving Tewkesbury 203 runs to win. In response to such a mammoth target, Tewkesbury’s skipper James Allcoat decided to open with big hitters Simon Holmes and Nick Hill. Holmes and Hill gave the Tewkesbury innings a fast start, then Warren Deeming (57 not out) and Matt Cox (58) maintained the momentum. When the rain came

DRIVING IN GERMANY: SUCH A PLEASURE! Just before I disappeared off the radar, (due to illness), we drove to Germany for the Stuttgart Classic Motor Show – and a terrific show it was, but that’s not what this is about, writes Anthony Stockman. It’s about the driving standards and traffic management in that country, which are frankly – second to none! Intelligent traffic lights, good Autobahn lane discipline, no lane hogging, everyone obeying the rules – we’ve got a lot to learn! Let’s start with my pet hate – traffic lights! Everyone has experienced being stationary for what seems like an age, waiting for no-one to come out of anywhere, for over use of time delays, or simply sitting at a red light in the small hours when there’s no-one about; in Germany, that doesn’t happen, (and in most of Europe). In Europe, nearly all crossroads are being replaced by roundabouts; why? – Because roundabouts control traffic flow, they don’t stop it dead. To my dismay, in this country the powers that be seem hell bent on proliferating these mindless flashing anomalies that bring us, often so unnecessarily to a grinding halt. And if there are several sets close together, during

rush hour, there is traffic chaos as one set turn green, but no-one can move, because the set down the road are at red! So what happened in Germany that made me smile at the lights, instead of cursing them? Well, I watched intrigued, from a car park, near a large light controlled junction. Cars approached from various directions, but as they did so, the lights reacted to the largest number, or the nearest and fastest, but no sooner had they passed, then the next mass of cars went on their way, swiftly followed by the ones and twos. There were no delays; no sets of cars all looking at one another without moving. These lights were traffic ‘Super Sensitive’, ‘with knobs on’! Walking through Stuttgart suburbs, it became very apparent that this wasn’t an experiment, or a ‘one off’, it was the norm – and although very busy, there were virtually no hold-ups. Pretty good eh? Then there were the Autobahns; no speed limit made it a lot of fun, especially zooming along – flat out at 140, but it was the speed and reaction of the drivers that deserved a standing ovation. Everyone – and I do mean EVERYONE, got over to the inside lane unless they were actual-

Rain lubricates the blades, which makes clearing the screen an efficient process. When the screen is dry, the blades don’t want to glide, they want to stick, increasing drag and wear on motor and linkage. Don’t leave your tailgate wiper to its own devices; at speed, even when it is raining, there is seldom enough water on the rear window to be able to leave them on, Two simple thing that’ll make driving better.

Now, I’m not advocating no limits on our motorways, but I would like to see what is now law, and that is – the end of the centre lane procession, where drivers sit there overtaking nothing! If we all obeyed the motorway rules, traffic would flow much more freely!
