Inside this month’s Tewkesbury Direct you’ll find details of lots of events happening in and around the town this August. If music’s your thing, then Lakefest at Eastnor Castle (Thurs 10th-Sun 13th August) brings the best of British music to the area. Headliners include Feeder, Imelda May, The Charlatans, Seth Lakeman, Badly Drawn Boy, Wilko Johnson, Turin Brakes and local favourites Roving Crows. Vintage and veteran cars and bikes roll into Tewkesbury School on Sunday 20th August for the annual Classic Vehicle Show. Over 700 cars and 200 motorbikes are expected to roll up and there will be over 100 market stalls too. An added attraction this year is an American -style Drive-In Movie on the Saturday night before the event (19th).

At the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway there is plenty for the family to enjoy. Youngsters will love the ‘Teddy Bear Tuesday’ train rides, and tipplers will raise a glass to the ‘Steam and Real Ale Weekend’ (19th-20th August). Also on the weekend of 18th-19th August is a Beer, Cider & Music festival at the Boat Inn, Ashleworth, with a barbecue and activities for children. For a different view of the area, take a trip to the top of Tewkesbury

Abbey. Tower tours are taking place every day in August (weather permitting). If you have a head for heights then the Panorama Tower near Croome Landscape Park is also open to the public on Friday 18th August. Over at Northway Playing Fields on Saturday 5th August there will be a fete in Northway(1-5pm), and four legged friends (and their owners) will love the Companion Dog Show at Tewkesbury Rugby Club. The John Moore

Museum will be holding another Birds of Prey Day (Saturday 26th August) and on Bank Holiday Monday (28th) Northern Soul fans can enjoy an anniversary event at the Watson Hall. Also on Bank Holiday Monday there is a Summer Fun Day at Priors Park Chapel. Details of more events inside this magazine.

The author of this book has used his grandfather's notebooks to compile this fictitious account of his ancestor's experiences in WW1. Translated from Flemish we experience a Belgian soldier's eye view of life in an overpowered, out gunned Army as the Kaiser's troops stormed through the Belgian countryside. Yet this book is so much more than an account of the war, as Stefan's grandfather, Urbain Martien, was also an artist, as was Urbain's own father, hence the book's title. It also illuminates a tender love story, his parents, set against his background of a childhood in Ghent, where as a young man he was sent out to work in an iron foundry at the tender age of 14. In graphic detail his teenage memories are portrayed. Urbain is devoted to his parents, and the love he holds for each of them is recounted with true devotion. Hours spent with his father a repairer of church murals until he leaves to undertake a restoration in Liverpool. During his absence Urbain teaches himself to paint, but his interest is only ever as a hobby; yet he matures to become a talented copier of the Masters. The novel starts slowly uncovering Urbain's early life, until

10% off with this advert in the middle the brutality of war is recounted. He becomes a wounded hero, convalescing one time in Liverpool, where he can trace his father's stay. The clarity of the author's grandfather's war diaries provides, in such stark detail, a foot soldier's existence. Long marches which if you do not know Belgium too well, are worth looking up on a map to understand the distances covered. There is also the touching love story of Urbain as a man, about relationships that resonate through the ages, and why the author's mother is christened Maria Emelia. The text of the book is decorated with photographs and pictures which add an intimacy to the story. Beautifully written with an excellent translation - a read with a difference. Selected by: Ian B. Daffodil moves to Severn Vale office in Tewkesbury Daffodil Support Services Ltd, which provides assistance to people in their own homes, has moved into spare office space at Severn Vale Housing in Tewkesbury. Daffodil, which helps the elderly and disabled in Tewkesbury Borough, had been looking for suitable office space locally for some considerable time. The company employs fifteen support workers and currently looks after over eighty people. The business was launched in 2014 and has grown considerably in the last three years. Company Director Vicki Hawker said: “We weren’t having much luck in finding suitable premises in Tewkesbury when one of my team posted on Facebook that we were looking for office space. “Severn Vale Housing immediately responded saying they had space available in their building. We came to look around and the rest is history.” Severn Vale Housing Asset and Commercial Director Michael Craggs said: “We hadn’t actively marketed our spare space, but we were plan-

When we saw Daffodil’s appeal on social media we realised it would be a good fit for us. “We run a number of retirement schemes across the Tewkesbury Borough area and have experience of working with older people so the two businesses had a certain synergy. “We have welcomed them into Severn Vale and hope they can continue to grow their business in Tewkesbury Borough.” Daffodil Support Services staff don’t wear

uniforms and staff drive their own cars so people who use their services are not singled out in the community as vulnerable. They do not currently provide personal care but they do carry out various duties from basic housework, meal assistance and shopping to welfare check, accompanying people to appointments and problem solving. I am sad to announce the death of a former GI Bride, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Born Joan Mary Smith (but called herself Mary) in Birmingham in 1926, she was raised in Priors Park at number 22 Abbots Road, then a shop. The house, along with 24-30, had been built by her grandfather, James Attwood who was also landlord of the Wheatsheaf Inn (now Cornell’s Bookshop) in the High Street. He was a very jolly man who was also a breeder of Fox Terriers, his champion being named "Wheatsheaf Major". Her father was Henry Albert Smith who had married Hilda Attwood in 1924.

MRS JOAN MARY BURKETT Mary later worked at the Post Office and was a friend of the late Nora Day – it was Nora who introduced me to Mary who then was living in the USA. I was advised that Mary had contributed her memories to the authors of this book about GI Brides. I communicated with Mary who then taught me so much about the history of Tewkesbury (her aunt Mary Attwood was a well-known, local shop owner) and her US visitation from 1942. She fell in love with a GI, Howard L Strombeck, and they were allowed to marry in the summer of 1945. As with most GI

Brides she travelled later and separately to the USA in 1946 on SS Argentina. Living there, they had two children, Wendy and Nicholas. By 1952, however, the family had returned to live in the UK and from 1952-1958 she was herself a shop owner at 10 Barton Street. Sadly the marriage failed and Mary and her children returned to the USA where she married Leo Burkett in 1960. He also corresponded with me as he was a graduate of the Roosevelt’s New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps which trained the unemployed in agricul-

tural skills. Leo was very proud of his experience. He died in 2003 and eventually Mary decided to move back to Tewkesbury to live with her daughter and sonin-law, David Hartell, who had converted a garage in their garden in Walton Cardiff. Unfortunately, her return coincided with the inundation of 2007 and, aged 81, she was flooded out of her home. Undaunted by this terrible experience, she bounded back and it was always a joy to meet Mary in the High Street – she had a wonderful American accent and she really knew how to dress most elegantly. She died aged 91 at Knightsbridge Lodge and will be buried in Osceola, Indiana, USA with her husband, Leo.

FOODBANK THANKS TESCO STORE Jack Lowe, Project Manager for Tewkesbury Foodbank, has thanked the town’s Tesco store for allowing volunteers to make a collection there in June. “We are once again thankful to our local Tesco store for allowing us to make a two day collection and for their help by filling bags with food from our list, making it easier for people to donate,” said Jim. “For this collection, we specifically targeted food needed for our School Holiday Meals project which is slightly different from our usual food list.” During June, Tewkesbury Foodbank processed 38 vouchers, which represented 48 Adults and 21 Children supplying food for 801 meals. STEPHENS’ ALLEY Stephens’ Alley is opposite the Black Bear, and the last alley along the High Street. Mr Stephens was a hosier, and the alley contained his business. There were six occupied cottages in 1905, but had been more. Some had been converted to other uses, and in the middle of the alley is a building which was a workshop used to maintain stocking frames, and as a store and factory. The stocking business was weighted towards the ‘master, who rented out both cottages and frames to the stocking makers, who worked on piece-work, being paid on Saturday, after their rents had been deducted. Mr Stephens was described as a ‘Respectable man’, but his fortune didn’t stay with his family. The last Stephens was Tewkesbury’s lamplighter. John, known as ‘Lampy’ seemed to have been mistreated by his employers. After thirty years’ service, the number of lamps had risen considerably. His job consisted of carrying a

ladder to each lamp to light the gas at dusk, extinguishing half of them at 11pm and the rest at dawn. He asked for a rise, but he was sacked instead! When a replacement couldn’t be found, he was re-instated, with the promise of a light on a stick to make life easier. When he retired, after 58 years, in 1886, he applied for a pension, to be told that he was officially employed by the gas company, not the Council! He didn’t have an entirely unblemished record. In 1869, he had the misfortune to be the first defendant before a new recorder (judge) at the Borough quarter sessions, accused of stealing a meerschaum tobacco pipe from Henry Treasure, a deaf and dumb man, in the Brewer’s Arms. He was sentenced to a month’s hard labour. In 1905, there were six cottages in the alley. In 1913, four were occupied. This alley didn’t go through the clearances

of other alleys and though altered the buildings are still there. It’s still possible to identify the workshop and all the cottages. In 1898, the Medical Officer reported that the well water in the alley was unfit to drink, but 15 years later, the alley pump remained the only water available: Municipal wheels turned slowly. The cottages were as basic as elsewhere. In 1913, No 3 was described as “Very Old Brick & Tile Cottage in Good Order. Ground floor: Living Room & Wash House. 1st Floor: 1 Bedroom. Pump Water. WC. Shared.” No. 71, the front house, was in the distant past a pub, the Crown, and in 1812 possibly a fish shop. It became a residence, and in the twentieth century was converted to offices. The opposite side of the alley was occupied by 72 High Street, Enderby House, and its garden, which extended to Oldbury Road. Mrs Jesse Preece lived here. It

Stephens’ Alley has had an unremarkable history, and retains a lot of its charm.

Gloucester Road Nurseries When driving towards Tewkesbury past the Gupshill Manor Restaurant, have you given much thought to the bungalows nestling next to Queen Margaret’s Camp on the right? writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. The development is known as Beaufort Place (after the Duke who was High Steward of the Borough of Tewkesbury in 1970). The area was once part of the Rudgeway and was known as Barbers Gardens, harbouring two cottages in 1841. By 1913 much of the land in that area was owned by the wealthy widow of The Vicar of Tewkesbury, Arch-Deacon Hemming Robeson. After World War I, however, the Borough Council focused on this area for the building of council houses - ‘Homes fit for Heroes’. Barbers Cottage survived until it was demolished in 1948. It was then that the Borough converted the land into a nursery - to produce flowers for the whole borough. In 1957 the Tewkesbury Register visited, took this photograph of one of the two glass houses with Fred Bishop (and Ernest Fletcher) and produced a headline, boasting of producing 22,000 plants annually but a “shoe string budget hits parks”. Neighbour Malcolm Nunn arrived in 1975 and thinks that the nursery lingered on until the 1980s, when houses were the only produce of this land. WILDLIFE TREASURES AT NATURE IN ART The Society of Animal Artists is holding a special exhibition at the Nature in Art Gallery and Museum this summer. Exhibits by 58 artists, including sculptures, were selected by an international panel of judges. Members of the Society were invited to submit works on the scale of small ‘cabinet paintings’ which were popular with country house collectors centuries ago. The Georgian mansion Wallsworth Hall, where the show is being held, was built in the mid 1700s and provides the perfect setting for such an exhibition of intricate and finely detailed work. There’s a rare opportunity to scale an iconic landmark this month, when the Panorama Tower at Croome opens its doors to the public. The building was designed as an ‘eyecatcher’ by Lancelot Capability Brown for the 6th Earl of Coventry in the 1750s, when he created the famous landscaped parkland at Croome. Croome Park has been under the stewardship of the National Trust since 2009, and attracts huge numbers of visitors each year. The Panorama Tower offers 360 degree views back towards Croome and over the surrounding countryside. It is not normally open to the public, but there is free admission between 11am and 5pm on Friday 18th August. The Panorama Tower can also be reached from Croome Park, but admission charges will apply to those wishing to walk through the parkland or visit the house. The National Trust is also running ‘Flower Explorer’ Days at Croome Park during August. The parkland and house are situated off the A38 (Via Earls Croome) to the north of Tewkesbury. LITTER PROBLEM At Vale Wildlife Hospital we regularly see the direct injuries that litter causes to animals. Fishing litter in particular is something we see dozens of times over the course of a year. We have treated three incidents of this in the past week alone with a hook embedded in the beak of one of George and Zelda’s cygnets (Pittville Park, Cheltenham), and a swan and a duckling both having swallowed hook and line.

It doesn’t take much to make sure that all fishing litter is taken away and disposed of responsibly rather than leaving it on the river bank or the lakeside. Seabirds and other marine wildlife are bearing the brunt of the impact of litter pollution worldwide. A recent article on MailOnline highlights some startling facts: • About 99 per cent of native seabirds will have plastic in their stomachs by 2050 • Plastic and rubbish have become a deadly part of everyday life for British wildlife • Greenpeace found rubbish on every one of the 30 beaches it studied in Scotland • Waste has made its way into the habitats of seabirds, sharks, seals and whales

Plastics are one of the main problems. Greenpeace states 'With a truckload of plastic entering the ocean every minute, we need urgent action from governments and from major soft drinks companies which produce billions of single-use plastic bottles every year, to stop the flow of plastic into the sea.' Another campaign which we have long supported is the banning of mass balloon releases. Latex balloons can be fatal to animals if ingested and their use is a totally unnecessary risk and a contributor to the amount of litter polluting the countryside and the seas. “What goes up must come down and even if the balloons are degradable they may take a number of weeks to ‘degrade’ whereas it could take only seconds for an animal to swallow a balloon or balloon fragment. “For example, dolphins, whales and turtles have all been found with balloons in their stomachs, probably after mistaking them for jellyfish or squid. “Farm animals too can be spooked by balloons falling to the ground and they can be mistaken for food.” (RSPCA). According to the Marine Conservation Society: “Latex may last for up to four years in the marine environment. “The latest research also shows that only around 13% of balloons burst into small pieces whilst more than 80%

come down intact. “This could explain the rise in balloon litter levels we have seen on beaches, which will have a great impact on wildlife.” It really is time for

something to be done to stop this. There has been a lot of talking about the issue, but nowhere near enough actual action. Our planet deserves better!

TELLINGTON TTOUCH COMES TO TEWKESBURY Gemma Hodson has established a new dog walking and therapy service in Tewkesbury, using Tellington TTouch training. “I offer a solo dog walking service for all dogs but specialise in those needing a little extra support, for example, reactive or sensitive dogs,” said Gemma. “I am trained in Tellington TTouch 䡵 Gemma Hodson and friend therapy, which is a kind and respectful way of working animals. It looks at how posture relates to behaviour, then using a gentle form of body work and ground work activities, tension patterns can be released which - in most cases - can lessen problem behaviour, helping to rehabilitate the dog. “I use a combination of TTouch and reward-based, force-free handling on every walk.” Gemma’s business, All About The Dog, provides the service throughout Tewkesbury and the surrounding area. “I also run workshops where people can come to learn how to help their dogs themselves using this technique, and 1-2-1s for those whose dogs require a more private environment,” Gemma added. She is also studying canine sports massage and hopes to be able to offer this as an additional service during the new year. Staff at the facility have undertaken an awareness session and have become ‘Dementia Friends’ which equips them to help people living with the condition. Some of our members had a great time taking part in the Medieval Parade mainly because they were following the Italian Flag wavers! At our July meeting Ruth Lowe told us that she started collecting Mary Quant memorabilia in the year 2000 and now has 2,300 items! Her display included clothes, boots, homewares, knitting and sewing patterns, makeup etc. all designed by Mary. She designed the interior for a Mini in 1988. Ruth even owns one of these which she takes to Classic Car Shows winning many awards. After our August break the next meeting on September 13th will be a Social with Wine and Cheese. 2017 Bredon Annual Boat Races Why not join us on the riverbank in Bredon on Saturday 2nd September for an afternoon of sporting action, adrenalin and fun. DOWN TO THE ISBOURNE Tucked away off the well-beaten tourist track on the edge of the Cotswolds, the villages of Dumbleton and Wormington offer some very pleasant walks for those of all fitness levels, writes Jack B. Walker. Park with care in the centre of Dumbleton, near the church and entrance to Dumbleton Hall (now an hotel). Cross the stile in the hedge next to Nutmeadow House. Do not join the Winchcombe Way, but take the path on the left which follows the boundary fence of the house, and keep walking along the same line across the field to a gap in a hedge, where you

meet a track coming down from Leyfield Farm (1). Go through the gap and bear left. Do not take the path across the field, but walk down its edge keeping the hedge on your left. Ignore other paths and keep walking until you reach the busy B4078 (2). Go through the gate and cross over to Mill Cottages, which are opposite. Bear slightly left and look for the

drive next to the cottages. Go through the gate and walk down the long drive until you reach Mill Farm (3). Mill House was once the residence of Viscount Monsell, whose family lived at Dumbleton Hall until the 1950s when it was sold to the Post Office. The family retained the estate lands and many cottages in and around Dumbleton. When Lord Monsell died in the 1990s, Mill

House passed to his sister Joan Eyres-Monsell, who made it her English home. She lived here with her husband, the travel writer and war hero Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor - who led a colourful life and was a well-respected ‘character’ about these parts. Carry on ahead with Mill House on your right and bear down the slope towards farm buildings. Bear right and walk past the old mill on the

Idyllic, until you notice the dog frantically nibbling at its paw, or shaking its head. Don’t ignore it, it may be a grass seed, not the nice little seeds you find in the bird food, but 5cm of barbed grass awn lodged in one’s paws! Long haired breeds, like Spaniels are more prone to them as the fur traps the seed next to the skin and then with continuous movement (does a Spaniel ever sit still?!) works its way into the skin. Often a trip to the Vets will involve a sedation or anaesthetic to allow a good furtle to find the elusive seed, and it is surprising how something so big can hide itself so well under the skin. Well we can’t stop dogs being dogs and running through grass, but we can help by trimming out all that long fur between their toes and around armpits. Looking towards Dumbleton Hill river Isbourne (to your right) to join the Isbourne Way (4). The mill was built from Dumbleton Brick: a brickworks was established near the village during the 1850s to provide building materials for Dumbleton Estate. Turn left and follow the path across the fields until you meet a lane (5). Go right and walk along the road, over the Isbourne and up the slope into Wormington Village. The Isbourne is often tagged as the only river in England which flows due north from its source. It rises on Cleeve Hill and joins the River Avon at Evesham. In Wormington, look for the tiny church on the left (6). Take the drive into the farmyard to the left of the church, and follow the yellow arrows. At the last barn,

turn left behind it (leaving the Isbourne Way)(7). Walk down the field and over a stile, carry on down, cross over a bridge, walk up the field on the other side, until you meet the track leading to College Farm (8). Turn left and walk back to the lane. Cross over and go through the gate, following the public footpath sign, down a track which leads back to Mill House. (Note: on some maps this track is not marked as a public right of way). Retrace your steps back to Dumbleton. The churches at Wormington and Dumbleton are both well-worth a visit. Idyllically situated in truly lovely parkland, Dumbleton Hall Hotel is open to non-residents but check opening times before visiting.

Dog owners and their four legged friends are invited to Tewkesbury's Companion Dog Show on Saturday 5th August for a fun family event in aid of charity, writes Shelby Powell. The venue is the Rugby Club (off Gander Lane) which offers ample free parking plus a licensed bar. There are over twenty classes available from Pedigree to Novelty which includes all the popular ones including 'dog with the waggiest tail', 'dog most like its owner' and 'most appealing eyes'. For the youngest members of the family there are two children's classes for best handler aged 5 to 11 and 12 to 16 years. There are rosettes for each class from 1st to 5th place, plus rosettes

FLAG WAVERS HOPE TO RETURN A troupe of flag-waving entertainers who wowed the crowd’s at this year’s Medieval Festival are hoping to return to the Tewkesbury event next year. Sbandieratori Di Arezzo, who performed in synchronised formation throwing colourful flags high into the air over the crowds to the beat of their accompanying band. They took part in displays on the battlefield, at the Abbey and in the parade. This rare visit to the UK was organised by festival organiser, Geraldine Liddy supported by generous donations by local businesses including a grant from Bookworm Bookshop and the provision of supplies such as meals and refreshments to showers and bedding to ensure the groups comfort during their stay in Tewkesbury. MEET SLIGHTLY FOXED As part of our ongoing series of events to mark 50 years since the death of Gloucestershire writer, John Moore, as well as 110 years since his birth in Tewkesbury, we are delighted to welcome publishers Slightly Foxed. As well as publishing a magazine for booklovers who don’t feel entirely at home in the here-todayand-gone-tomorrow world of overnight publishing sensations and over-hyped new books, Slightly Foxed also publish a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. Recent titles include John Moore’s Portrait of Elmbury and Brensham Village and will be followed in 2018 by The Blue Field. Visit the museum to meet the Slightly Foxed team and discover a world of interesting and often forgotten books.

You will also be able to buy their handsomely produced John Moore editions. Subscribing to Slightly Foxed is like spending time with a well-read friend – an unpretentious one with a sense of humour. Gloucestershire writer, John Moore (1907-1967), fictionalised his beloved Tewkesbury as the town of Elmbury and this setting is fundamental to some of his best loved books. His 1945 novel, Portrait of Elmbury, a heartfelt and vivid picture of the town in the interwar years was a huge success. The book’s appeal lay in a fund of nostalgic stories about an era to which a population

Entrance will be only via prepaid tickets purchased online at £10 a head, via www.tewkesburycvf.org. The festival opens at 11:00 on Sunday August 20th, following a parade through the town. The event will be opened by local dignitaries, famous racing drivers and celebrities Classic cars and bikes, trade stands, live music, bar, bbq, teas and cakes. The Midlands Air Ambulance Helicopter will be based on site for the day, and may have to take off to attend an incident. There will be upwards of 150 trade stands sell-

ing anything from jam to gaskets. We expect more than 800 classic vehicles of interest and rarity including cars and bikes, and the event usually attracts more than 3000 visitors. Bar, bbq, teas and

cakes. LIVE MUSIC from the Haywood Sisters, The Gloucester Strings, and we are hoping that Barry our favourite accordionist will also be able to do a few numbers. The 2016 event was a great success, and we

are building on that success with more exhibits and stalls, better organisation, and more fun and interest for the whole family. Subject to not being called to an incident, some visitors will be able to look at the MAAC helicopter close up and speak to the crew, and there will be other entertainment for the youngsters. All this for £5 a head, under 12’s free, free parking for spectators, free entry for classic vehicles and their drivers (just turn up on the day). By Ted Elwes.

TEWKESBURY ART STUDIOS We had some very interesting guests at Tewkesbury art studios last week. A giant bare lady and a giant lady bear. The bear was made by resident artist Jane Clatworthy, with children from Mitton Manor primary school, for Tewkesbury Medieval Parade. The bare lady was a sculpture created by guest artist Matthew West. Based on a figure head from a ship, Mathew created the sculpture from paper and glue. This was for an exhibition at the gardens gallery in Montpellier, Cheltenham where it was on view with a selection of paintings by Jane, some ceramic sculptures by Sam Lucas, photography by Ollie Davis and Lucy Wood and figurative sculptures by Jane Baker.

All the best activities took place, The Grand Bake off, which set very high standards, Dog Show, Archery, Pony Rides, Hit the Rat, and other Old English favourites. A new local writer has just published his first book. ‘A Theocsbury Storyteller’ is the work of M J David. The author has created a debut collection of 17 short stories that will capture the imagination and hearts of many short story lovers. Each story has been written with a natural sense of human emotion and reaction. The author says, “It’s a collection inspired from observations of life in general and, personal experience.” Although born and raised in Cheltenham, M J David, now lives in our beautiful market town of Tewkesbury, which, inspired the books title; Theocsbury being the medieval name for the town. “It was never my intention to become a writer but I’ve always liked reading and am constantly fascinated how great storytellers can conjure a reader’s imagination simply by stringing words together.” MJD says. Writing has developed over many years for MJD and he says that it was not until early 2016 that he really got his act together. Having served in the RAF as a Police NCO throughout the eighties; a variety of other jobs followed which, helped in his life

as a single parent family. He’d written a few ‘bits and pieces,’ and was encouraged by a good friend, Pat Stevens, to seriously consider writing for publication. Melrose, the publish-

er, shown an early draft copy, reviewed his collection and an Editor later wrote, “I enjoyed this collection and it is clear, much thought, feeling and craft has gone into their writing. Put together and you will have a nice, neat volume to present to the reader.” So, some months later

MJD is happy to announce he will be signing copies of his book at alison’s bookshop and musicroom in Tewkesbury High Street on 12 August between 10:00 and 12:00. I am nervous but also looking forward to meeting regular and new customers on the day.”

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

REMEMBER THE GOOD It feels as if we are being fed bad news constantly by the national papers and the radio and TV channels, writes local therapist and counsellor David Slater. We hear about the youths that have gone off the rails - seldom do we hear of the many who make a great contribution to society through their hard work and natural concern. We hear about those who fail and seldom know of those who succeed. We are given so much to worry about should we be sensitive types and what we should celebrate is kept under wraps. And BREXIT? Well, I rest my case ! If we are not careful we can allow ourselves to follow the trend and only see the bad, only feel the bad, only state the bad. And if there is no bad we must have got it wrong so we will feel bad about that ! There ARE people facing difficulties at work, in family relationships, people who are ill or caring for those they love. There are those who have financial troubles. I do not underestimate any of these. What I say is let us try and maintain a healthy balance so that we don’t all get bogged down and sink without trace. For the vast majority of us life is pretty good and we need to see that goodness and acknowledge it. For example, I wake in a morning to the sound of almost silence ( well, where I am I can hear the M5) BUT I hear no bombs or AK47s being fired. I do not hear the drones surveying the sky above me. I wake in the morning to a kitchen which provides me with all that I need for a healthy breakfast to start my day. I live in a comparatively free country.

Can YOU think of things in YOUR life? I would like you to do something for me . I want you to buy a new notebook. One with a fancy cover would be good although you could always stick a favourite photo on the cover. This is going to be a personal BOOK OF THE GOOD. I will do it too! When anything good happens, or a good thought comes into your mind or you see, eat, smell, touch, hear and say something good WRITE IT DOWN! Include the good things that happen to you and the good things you do for yourself and for others. It doesn’t need to make sense to anyone but you. Mine for today may start • Woke to a lovely sunrise. • Heard all about a wedding my brother went to yesterday • Chicken was great at lunchtime • Back ache much less today. • Chatted to a friend over the phone and helped her sort out things she had been worrying about. • Enjoyed listening to Classic FM. • Laughed, yet again, to Steptoe and Son on the radio. Never tire of it. We so easily tend to forget the good and remember only the bad. It is almost as if we have been programmed to behave like that. Time we fed in another new programme which will retrain us to focus on the positive and work with this new found positivity in every area of our life. If you have a moment Continued on Page 55

DRIVE FOR VOLUNTEER DRIVERS Tewkesbury Community Transport scheme, which provides local residents with a door to door service enabling them to get to medical appointments, is looking for extra drivers to cope with demand. Volunteers need access to a car and will be paid travelling expenses for any journey they undertake which are generally local trips. Its such a reassurance for individuals to access this service. This month a resident in an outlying village has required daily trips for radiotherapy treatment, and having a volunteer driver available has made life that much easier.
