Phew! What a summer it’s been so far, and if you are sticking around the tropic of Tewkesbury for August there’s plenty to see and do in the town. ‘Out of the Hat’ has wacky workshops for kids, there are bank holiday weekend fetes at Tewkesbury Hospital and in Twyning - and a great classic vehicle festival on Sunday 18th at Tewkesbury School. The John Moore Museum invites you to step back to Tudor times on 17th & 24th August, and there are beer and cider festivals at Bredon’s Hardwick and at Tewkesbury’s Anchor Inn. All featured in this issue!

Initial problems and concerns about the future of the lights are being addressed and the Chamber of Commerce, supported by the Tewkesbury Rotary Club, is working hard to

make sure that the lights appear on time at the end of November. Funding for the project continues to be a major hurdle, but it is hoped that support from local companies, busi-
nesses and individuals will help to reach the £10,000 required to pay for the erection of the lights, along with insurance and safety testing. Tewkesbury School’s Production of Bugsy Malone was ‘swell, real swell!’

Following on from a very successful performance of Oliver in October 2011, the students were again excited to be able to perform in the professional setting of the Roses Theatre. Auditions for casting started at Easter with students and staff spending hours rehearsing during and after school up until the opening night. Gary Watson, Headteacher said, "This year's production, Bugsy Malone, enabled students across the age range to showcase their immense talents in a wonderful local venue. “Performances in the production highlighted much young talent throughout from budding actors, singers and dancers. Compliments have been flooding into the school about the polished nature of the show." The school hopes to do another school production at the Roses Theatre in the future. 2 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

RACE THE MAYORS DOWN THE RIVER Tewkesbury’s two Mayors are organising a joint charity event to raise awareness of the benefits of taking regular exercise, and to fundraise to support the town’s young people, writes Shelby Powell. To show the community exercise can be fun, the Borough Mayor Claire Wright and Christine Danter, Town Mayor, are challenging local residents to join them. The event is a sponsored rowing race challenge taking place at Outlaw Mixed Martial Arts Gym on Northway Trading estate on Friday 16th August from 6.30 pm. The duo were inspired to organise the charity fundraiser when they were invited last month to the official opening of the gym by owner, Mark Woodard. Chair of Tewkesbury Britain in Bloom, John Badham, said: “For the last four years we have secured a Gold award and hope we will do at least as well this year. “We are incredibly grateful to all our sponsors whose generosity has made all this possible. The Town Council has also made an invaluable contribution. “We have been assisted too by other public authorities. However, it is largely the efforts our small group of dedicated volunteers who have ensured so often that Tewkesbury has done so well. “The judges arrived at Marina Court and were given a superb video demonstration organised by Brian Reeve. “We were able to show what the town had achieved, focusing especially on the Priors Park Edible Garden which for reasons of time the judges were unable to see for themselves. Our tour was organised and led by Pete Aldridge. “The gardens at Marina Court are an absolute delight and the judges were able to see this for themselves, before moving on to the

past the Abbey to see the 1471 gardens, so lovingly tended by a small group of volunteers. “The judges visited the Victoria Pleasure Gardens, where they met some of the volunteers and were given a short presentation by the Chair Dawn Hunt, and we welcomed Town Crier Mike Keen-Price and Mayor Christine Danter. “We passed on through Newtown to end our brief tour at the Knight's Alderman School, where we were warmly welcomed by pupils and staff alike. “Peter Badham then took the judges to the Royal Hop Pole in a 1967 Wolsey, where we were well looked after. “We should know the results in a few weeks.”

Ladies Recreate Historic First Excursion As part of their 90th anniversary celebrations, the ladies of Kemerton WI decided to re-create their first ever outing to Sudeley Castle. Appropriately dressed in 1920s attire, twenty WI members and three brave husbands boarded a vintage bus in glorious sunshine last month, bound for Winchcombe. This July’s weather was very different to that of 1923, when it poured with rain, but failed to dampen the ladies enthusiasm for their day trip. The 2013
ladies said they felt like celebrities when they arrived at Sudeley - with many visitors to the popular Cotswold attraction wanting their photos taken with the Kemerton group. A picnic lunch was enjoyed in Sudeley’s grounds, with a cream tea later in the day. The 1951 coach which took them there is
the oldest currently available for hire in the area - and added authenticity to the journey, with every bump in the road being felt! The first president of Kemerton WI was Mrs Florence Till, who lived at Kemerton Court. Mary Yerburgh, a current WI member, is married to Mrs Till’s great grandson Philip.

Manor ladies want more men Tewkesbury's local dramatic amateur group, the Manor Players were delighted to hand over a cheque for £1,050 to Louise Adkins of the LINC Charity, raised from the of performances Calendar Girls by the group earlier this year. SUMMER CRUISE BY RAILCAR For something different this August, how about a leisurely evening travelling on a 24 mile round trip through the glorious Cotswold countryside? Every Friday evening during August, the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is organising special trips by 1960s diesel railcar. Travelling from ToddStation to ington Cheltenham Race Course, passengers can enjoy the sights while watching the sun slowly set over the distant Black Mountains of Wales. The GWR’s diesel railcar offers 360 degree views: a wonderful panorama spanning the Vale of Malverns, Evesham and the Cotswold Hills on one of the most scenic heritage railways in Britain. Nature Reserve Secures Heritage Lottery Fund Investment Tewkesbury Nature Reserve Ltd has received a grant of £18,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), for an exciting new project that will enable volunteers to evaluate the biodiversity of the area and develop a data base of species and habitat The work will require the recruitment and training of additional volunteers drawn from the larger community of Tewkesbury, to augment the ongoing activities of the Tewkesbury existing Nature Reserve Volunteer Group. The grant will be used to employ a part-time provide co-ordinator, training and equipment for volunteers and cover the costs of keeping the community informed.
Following the huge impact of the floods in 2007 it became apparent to residents and the local authority that the flood plain surrounding the town would never be suitable for building development. Surrounded, as it is, by several residential areas adversely affected by flooding, it was recognised as providing an opportunity to create a natural resource into which could be channelled the new energy and confidence of the local community. To help plan the best way to improve the reserve the Environment Agency have also provided funds to prepare a river and floodplain restoration map which is being drawn up by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Consultancy. Brian Calway a Director of the Tewkesbury Nature Reserve said: “We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has recognised the benefit of the work we are doing to create this reserve for the community while greatly improving the natural habitat. “It is a wonderful opportunity for the residents of Tewkesbury to take part in the creation of their own wildlife haven that will be enjoyed by people and animals alike for many years to come.” Commenting on the award, Nerys Watts,

Tewkesbury Gets Ready for Heritage Open Days Tewkesbury is revving up ready to celebrate four days of history and heritage as part of a national event, Heritage Open Days, which take place between 12th and 15th September, writes Shelby Powell.

Special events were organised last year by Tewkesbury Abbey all three and of town's museums welcomed visitors from far and wide eager to brush up on their knowledge of the town's history. Members of the public also had chance to join Steve Goodchild from the Battlefield Society on a battlefield tour, and John Dixon led a tour of the town centre uncovering some of the town's gems. Meanwhile the Royal Hop Pole opened its doors offering an opportunity for the public to learn about its rich history including viewing a medieval fireplace and banqueting hall; the later being discovered by builders when the building was renovated after the floods in 2007. While John Badham led tours of the Town Hall which was the venue for a picture gallery of old photographs depicting shops
and buildings in the town centre dating back to the turn of the last century. TEWKESBURY BRICKS by John Dixon, President, Tewkesbury Historical Society Tewkesbury possessed the ideal conditions for brick production when it proved more economical than stone to provide fashionable facades in the 18th century, writes John Dixon. It is no surprise that brickmaking became established where the River Severn met an outcrop of clay beneath the cliff at the Mythe. It is down Paget’s Lane (by the nursery) where today’s fishing ponds were clay pits from the 16th century. They are reminder of this formerly thriving industry. Everything was done by hand, except ‘puddling’ the clay (mixing it with water to form the shapes), which was done by feet. The Museum possesses a lease for which excluded the Wakeman family from some of the meadow at King John's Castle which "is now used for the making of bricks". A major boost came in 1747 when four arches of the Long Bridge (now King John’s Bridge) were rebuilt with brick instead of wood by Joseph Fryzer, “mason”. The Fryzer Family was pre-eminent until the late 19th century. Even though, Samuel Fryzer was declared bankrupt tin 1828, there was still Fryzer’s brickworks at the Mythe in 1841. In 1856 Mr. Fryzer, ‘who supplied the bricks for the building (of the locks at Upper Lode) … gave a supper for the men employed on the building’. The family was wealthy enough to own property in today’s Fryzers Court in Barton Street. The Jeynes family of brick-makers diversified into property developing. William Jeynes, who died in 1899, ‘worked on railway contracts in France …but in 1863-4 worked on the Mythe Tunnel. Then, [he] developed homes for working classes in Oldbury Road so that they could escape "unwholesome alleys"’. Tewkesbury is, however, notable for the distinctive blue engineering bricks, which denote which of our famous alleys are public rights of way. These were introduced from 1888 but could not be made in Tewkesbury because they required a superior manufacturing ability: “the clay used for [blue] brick-making must have high iron content and be capable of being fired at 1,150C”. The purchase of blue bricks emphasized that the Mythe was no longer an economic place for brickmaking in the Industrial Revolution when machine replaced puddling by feet.

There’s something wonderfully wacky going on in Tewkesbury this summer – and children are invited to join in with the fun. Tewkesbury Heritage Centre, which is run by Tewkesbury Borough Council, is inviting children under 16 to drop into its Wacky Wednesday Workshops, which will run throughout the summer. The drop-in workshops will run on three Wednesdays in August, and each one offers a different fun activity. On 7th August, the sessions will focus on kite-making. Using a range of colours and materials, children can create a kite that’s as wacky or as beautiful as they see fit. For Wednesday 14th August, there will be sparkle aplenty at the Swords and Crowns workshop where children will be able to decorate their swords and crowns with glitter, paint and more. It’s Bugs and Beautiful Butterflies at the final workshop on 28 August. Whether it’s sunbathing lizards or beautiful butterflies, children can let their imagination run wild during this fun hands-on craft session. It thrives in temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees Centigrade, which we have seen almost every day for the past three weeks. It only causes problems when aerosolised and inhaled (such as using your shower). Before using your shower for the first time upon return from your

Any bridging of this damp proof course, such as decking, or overgrown bushes can cause damp to form on the internal surfaces of your house. Take the time to cut back bushes in order that air can circulate properly, and plan alterations so that the damp proof course is not compromised. Drain down the central heating system by locating the drain cock (lowest point in the system, usually fitted under one of the radiators). Refill the system with water and ensure that you add anti corrosion solution to the correct dosage for your system. Bleed through the radiators to the correct pressure to remove air from the system, and check the pressure gauge on your boiler.

64 Barton Street reveals, superficially, little difference between its ‘Then’ and ‘Now’. However, historic buildings are very expensive to maintain and, without a viable use, there will be no ‘Now’. The building is probably a 17th century restoration of an older building, the windows suggesting its use by a textile merchant. In 1838, it was owned by Quakers and inhabited by a Non-Conformist minister - and his family of nine plus one servant. After his widow died, the buildings deteriorated; it 1881 it was a store for the Midland Railway and then divided into two separate establishments - in 1891 it was both a butcher’s shop and home to a tragic widow Elizabeth Graham with seven children – and no servants. In the 1930s it was converted into apartments but its most difficult time came in the post-war housing crisis when it was divided into separate flats. A T.H.S. member remembers that “I was married in 1950 and we went to live in what is now the Museum. We rented one front room at £1 a week …. We had to wait three years until we were allocated a ‘prefab’ in Prior’s Park”. The decaying building of 1958 was rescued by the then Town Council in 1961 and it has thrived as the Museum. Long may it be maintained and improved by the Council. This summer entrance will be free and a warm welcome will be extended to children, parents and grandparents seeking to enjoy its box of delights.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater School holidays are here and much of your parents, attention, turns to your children. I hope that they had a good year last year and that the coming year will be a good and successful one for them, writes local therapist David Slater. You have ambitions for them? How can you best foster those ambitions?Here are a few ideas: Let ENCOURAGE be your key word. If your child has a real desire to do something remarkable then have the courage and the heart
not to rubbish the idea – even if they do fancy being an astronaut! It is your task to encourage them to work out how they could make it happen. –set CHALLENGE them challenges which you know will stretch them. The challenges need to be attainable but it will be great to celebrate successes with them. Try and avoid the natural instinct to wrap your children in cotton wool. They need to see the world as it is. TRAVEL – if you can try and see new places and things and meet
new people. Nobody ever changed the world by staying at home. BOOKS – this is a sure way to broaden the mind and can inspire and inform ambitions. I say " broaden the mind". Encourage your children to read as widely as possible so that they can experience what is available and begin to develop their own personal taste. ROLE MODELS – It’s good for children to have people to look up to. Helps them focus ambition. their Encourage children to explore their role mod-
els – how they started, what they did, why they chose, etc. One BUT here, though. Be careful when you talk about heroes. This has become an abused word and its value has been undermined. To me the soldier in Afghanistan is a hero the footballer with his millions is not. He may be a role model through his dedication and skill, etc, but i feel the word hero is not appropriate PLAY – constructive and role play can help focus the mind and help the children to explore in safety. MIX – being with oth-
ers helps understanding of how one can influence or be influenced by others. MONEY – Isn’t the only thing in life. There is more to life than money. Your children may well have ambiwhich don’t tions involve high earnings! Remember it is THEIR ambition and their happiness that is important. Far more important than cash outlay is that you SPEND TIME with your children. This may be argued to be the most precious gift that you have to share with them next to Love !
R E M E M B E R – Anything is possible. Children are our for the investment future and deserve our nurturing. We need celebrate our children more. All we hear about are those who cause the problems, those who don’t tow the line, and those who rebel. These are in the MINORITY. The vast MAJORITY deserve our praise and encouragement. The year of 1831 is remembered in this unusual novel and recounted in four seasonal sections by Mary the youngest of four daughters of a farmer struggling to survive on their small-holding. Mary is an illiterate teenager, and it is only after her father sends her to work at the local vicarage, where as the year progresses, that she learns to read and write. The relationships and changes in that household are recounted, in her her own haunting language. Mary starts her story at the home farm but then in the summer she is reluctantly sent to work for the vicar and to help care for his sick wife with whom she develops a good relationship. As the seasons change, so do Mary's fortunes and whilst the vicar takes her under his care, so his demands on Mary increase. Without a capital letter throughout, this unusual form of text and the vernacular language work well within the context of this novel. There is a memorable conclusion to this compelling rural tale. KIDS IN THE SWIM Children can swim for just 50p a day this summer thanks to Cascades Leisure Centre’s special holiday membership. Swimming, slides and seadoos are on offer at the fun-filled leisure centre, which is offering an unlimited swimming membership for six weeks. The membership, available for children under 16, will run from Monday, 22 July to Sunday, 1 September and cost just £20.13. The centre’s seadoos will also be available to hire during the summer holidays. The motorised scooters propel swimmers through the water at 5mph, and have so far helped to increase pool participation and encourage fun. The seadoos can also be booked for private parties between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday afternoons. This requires a minimum of 12 people at a cost of £120, with any additional participants at £1 per head. Finds of the month Local metal detectorist, Stuart Borley, brings two great finds to this months issue. The first found near Tewkesbury is this brass bell with the clanger still in situ, bearing the initials GS. Stuart has researched the find with the British Museum who believe it was probably cast by bell maker, George Stockham, in London in around 1850.
The second item is a large Roman coin, shown here, again found near Tewkesbury and we await more detailed information.

NEW BOAT RACE FOR BREDON Building upon the success of previous races on the Avon at church fetes, Bredon is to have an annual boat race. The inaugural event will take place on Saturday 14th September. The race will be a fund raiser for the church, and is intended to be a fun event for the whole community. Northway football club, raising their game Northway Football Club has recently been going through changes. A brand new dedicated committee hopes to breathe a new lease of life into the club, building upon the success brought by existing players and recruiting new ones. The revitalised side plans to take this season by storm. Following the very sad loss of Alan Allsop, who dedicated all his time to the team, the club was deflated last season.

Snot cool to sniff Special classes are being laid-on to teach people in young Tewkesbury the dangers of substance abuse. Teenagers in year eight at Tewkesbury School will be warned that as many as one in three could die first time if they experiment. The project, named “Snot cool” by pupils, will be held on 15 July and is being organised by Tewkesbury Borough’s Community Safety Partnership and funded by Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl. “We know there’s a problem with young people sniffing aerosols including lighter fuel, deodorants and the like in the Tewkesbury town area”, said Mr.Surl. “We need to get the message across that these substances, when misused, have a high mortality rate. For example, one in three youngsters die the very first time they try it - that's a shocking statistic. “Our young people, who think it’s cool, need to know the risk they’re running”. A grant of £900 from the Commissioner’s Fund has been awarded to the “Snot cool” project to educate young people aged 13-14yrs old (Yrs 8 and 9) of the dangers of Volatile Substance Abuse. The money will pay for specialist advice sessions to be held at Tewkesbury School. The aim is to reach vulnerable age groups before the start of summer and lighter evenings. TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 35

Sunshine, blue skies and soaring temperatures were the keynotes of this year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival - the 30th. Ice cream and cold drinks sellers did a roaring trade, with hats also proving very popular. Mist areas set up to cool people down were very
popular, especially with children and every shaded area was soon full. People were asking how the knights managed to carry on with the battle re-enactment in such conditions, wearing full shiny steel armour. The answer, as usual is preparation.
Extra water carriers were on hand with plentiful supplies of liquid, and flannels soaked in iced water were also available to cool them off. Cooling areas were set up for them as soon as they left the field, or for any who really needed time out. Medics were on hand dealing with those who were badly affected, but reported that the hardest task was persuading them that going back into the battle was not a good idea. Overall 30 out of over 1000 participants had to drop out. Away from the battlefield a twelve foot tall knight, and Sir with his Bouncalot spring heels proved a
great hit with the youngsters, as did the dragons and their handlers, and the Bright Knight arts and crafts tent, whilst the story teller in the magic garden was a haven of peace. Organisers say that without an entry charge it is impossible to give visitor numbers, but there seemed to be the usual number of people, but many did not stay as long as possible because of the heat. Spokeswoman Peggy Clatworthy said, " Last year it was mud up to our knees, this year it was a heatwave, what next? Whatever it is it will not stop us putting on the festival for the 31st time.

Policing in response to the badger cull in Gloucestershire Many people will be aware that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is allowing a pilot cull of badgers to go ahead in parts of west Gloucestershire at any point from 1 June 2013. We understand this is a sensitive issue and we want to make sure that you are clear about the responsibilities of the police. The proposed pilot cull is a Defra-managed issue under licence from Natural England and it will be up to them and the operating company carrying out the cull to decide where and when it takes place. Our role is to provide a police response to the cull and any incidents around it. This is called Operation Themis. It will be neutral and independent of the cull itself. We will be impartial, even-handed and fair to everyone, whatever their views, interest or involvement in the pilot scheme. We will: •

Karen Brennan, the shops manager first appeared as a regular face in the high street when she managed the former Oxfam Bookshop but when that was closed by the charity Karen decided to set up Bookworm near The Cross. Karen said "Since the shop opened in 2010 we have gone from strength to strength and now support a number of local charities with each one now beginning to see financial gain from the shop’s efforts.” A team of volunteer staff man the shop seven days a week and also run the Abbey Tea Rooms on Fridays during school holidays as an extra way to promote and support the charities. WHILE THE SUN SHINES
Well summer has arrived at last and I hope that you have been able to enjoy the good weather, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. Unfortunately there have been some opportunist burglars in our local communities taking advantage of open doors and windows. If you are enjoying the sun in your rear garden please ensure that your front door and windows are front locked it only takes seconds for a burglar to enter the hallway steal valuables and make off in your car if you have left the keys on a shelf or hook by the front door. I mentioned this only last month but we are still having crimes reported which could be avoided by taking some simple crime prevention measures. I have been looking over the reported crimes during the last month and again we have had several thefts of purses from shopping bags in local supermarket shops. Please ensure that your purse or wallet is not visible and your bag is closed securely or zipped up. More unusually there have been several reports of a lady selling raffle tickets in Tewkesbury High Street. These tickets are of the ‘cloak room’ variety and I'm convinced that none of the money she collects is received by the various charities she is allegedly collecting for. If you are approached by this person don't part with any of your hard earned cash please contact your local police on 101. Over the last few weeks I have tried to get out into the local community as much as possible and on one such occasion I attended a very serious road traffic collision on the A46 in Ashchurch Road where a motorcycle and a car were involved. The motorcyclist received very serious injuries and the car driver was in a state of severe shock but otherwise unharmed. The road was closed for almost four hours
on a very busy and hot Saturday afternoon. I was asked by many motorists why the road was closed for so long.
The reason for this is that the road has to remain closed for collision investigation officers to complete their detailed examination of the scene. I wish to thank the many drivers and members of the local community for their patience and understanding whilst this vital work was completed. On a lighter note many of you will have seen or heard the police
helicopter which is a valuable resource in locating suspects or indeed missing persons using thermal imaging camera equipment. We deal with a very large number of gulls each year at Vale Wildlife Hospital, mostly Lesser Black-backed gulls, but also a few Herring and Black-headed gulls, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. To mid-July, 156 gulls have been admitted in 2013. These large birds are often considered to be pests by many people and each year there are complaints about the mess and noise they make, reports of gulls dive-bombing members of the public and calls for their numbers to be controlled. Some organisations and councils do make attempts to reduce the numbers by carrying out measures such as egg oiling (which stops the eggs from hatching) but these attempts have very little impact on the huge populations which now inhabit our inland towns and cities. If the gulls do manage to hatch their eggs, their offspring can live for up to 30 years and the youngsters will return to where they were hatched each year to breed. Every breeding pair of gulls can produce around 40 chicks in their lifetime, so the gull situation in our towns and cities is set to get worse, not better. Gulls are very good parents, protecting the young of other gulls as well as their own. Each year when we have gull chicks at Vale in outside enclosures, a large number of adult gulls are attracted to our site and they spend the summer months patrolling the skies above the centre, calling and occasionally divebombing our staff when food is taken in for the chicks. Some of the adults will also come down and regurgitate food outside the enclosures in an attempt to feed the youngsters. Let’s face it, ultimately the gulls are here because of us, they cannot be blamed for taking advantage of our way of living. Perhaps if we lead a more responsible, cleaner, tidier, environmentally-friendly life, recycle more efficiently and stop relying on our evergrowing landfill sites, our towns and cities wouldn’t be quite as attractive to gulls as they are at the moment.

The show’s primary aim is in raising funds to support local and needy charities, which we attend to throughout the year. Young Tewkesbury cricketer Harry Low (pictured) ended up with the astonishing figures of 6-0 in a Cheltenham and recent Gloucester Cricket Association (CGCA) U15 league game against Winchcombe. The U15 skipper bowled single, double and triple wicket maidens in consecutive overs. Tewkesbury U15s won the game by seven wickets to stay just ahead of Winchcombe at the top of the CGCA B league.
